Scandinavia Explorer Tour

Scandinavia Explorer

Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.

6 Day - Around Iceland Adventure Tour

6 Day - Around Iceland Adventure

The overall journey was amazing. A lot was packed into those 6 days. The cabins were small for the most part, but they were clean and the beds were comfortable. I especially enjoyed the wilderness center. There was a lot to offer there. The hotel in Akureyrie was luxurious. It might have been nice to do a cultural event there. Whale watch and the baths were exceptional. But most of all, the guide made everything fantastic. His knowledge of Iceland, history, poets and authors, geological history, and all done with good humour. I enjoyed our tour with Siggy very much.

8 Days Guided Iceland Circle

It was an excellent trip for the value. Our guide was a wealth of information and friendly. our driver was very smooth and amazing on her ability to know exactly where the buses body was in some tight parking lots as well as handling everyone's bags and by second day recognized whose bag was whose. Would recommend better communication between front desk of hotel about pick-up for first day. The main office may have known time and location but front desk persons did not have that information.

A simply outstanding 18 day tour arranged by Marina Tours team. Completely and quickly responsive, flexible, excellent itinerary. Only complaint: Hella Hotel needs to be removed from your network. Not clean, a very old rundown building - we stayed elsewhere at our own expense. All other hotels were wonderful, and also offered really good food & decent wine lists.

12 day Guided tour | Across the Wilderness - Iceland‘s interior mysteries and more

We saw lots of waterfalls and volcanoes coupled with commentary by our enthusiastic guide, who seemed to know every tale that an Icelandic native has learned throughout their life. Our guide, Peter, was exceptional, very accommodating and quite funny. The country is beautiful and the meals showcased the cuisine of Iceland. Having a small group experience gave one a more in depth knowledge of what Iceland is about.

We had a super great trip through Iceland. We saw a lot, even more than the tour included. You can always get in touch with the tour operator, ask questions and rebook booked activities, for example. Everything went smoothly. As we were unable to redeem an activity due to organizational reasons, we were informed immediately and got our money back. So it was worth it.

Upon arrival, make your way to the hotel in Bergen Norway, on your own.

Before meeting up with your group, take some time to explore Bergen’s numerous attractions and landmarks. Several interesting places are located within a short walking distance. Recommended points of interest include the historic Hanseatic wharf Bryggen, the Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower Market, Bergen Aquarium, and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum).

Later in the evening, come together with your group and tour guide for a welcome dinner.

Bergen’s city center is compact and can easily be explored on foot. Take a stroll through Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll learn about the area’s fascinating history, including the lives of Hanseatic merchants, dried codfish, fires, Norwegian resistance fighters, and modern-day life at the wharf. Make your way past the lively Fish Market, and explore the Bergen Fortress area. Here you’ll find Håkons Hall, built in 1261, and the Rosenkranz Tower, dating back to the 1560s. Alternatively, wander through the quaint cobblestone alleyways in the heart of Bergen. Your first stop is the remote and picturesque Aurlandsfjellet mountain region. Here you can admire the scenery and take a break at Stegastein. On the way back from Geiranger, the mini-coach may stop at the renowned Lom Stave Church. The church was constructed in the Norman style in 1170 and still serves as the local church today.

Please note that the Geirangerfjord visit is weather and snow conditions dependent. The mountain road from Lom to Geiranger usually opens at the end of May. Alternatively, spend the day exploring Lom on your own. Check out Brimi Bue, a well-known local hot spot for fresh produce and traditional Nordic flavors, owned by renowned chef Arne Brimi. Try some good value lunch options. Experience the old farmer culture and the historic atmosphere of the Lom open-air museum. It includes houses dating back to the early 1600s. Toompea Hill provides stunning panoramic views over the Lower Town and the rest of Tallinn.

In the afternoon, you will board a ferry to Helsinki and transfer to your centrally located hotel.

nordic group tours

Day 15 Helsinki

This morning, your local guide will lead you on a 3-hour walking tour of Helsinki, a compact city that is easily explored on foot. You will begin in Senate Square, surrounded by historic neighborhoods and the iconic Lutheran Cathedral. Here you will learn about Finland’s unique position between Sweden and Russia.

From there, you will stroll through the colorful Kauppatori market. Here you can sample local delicacies such as reindeer meat and rye bread at the Old Market Hall. Scenic circle of scandinavia, june 2019, our experience with nv has been a joy.

Our experience with NV has been a joy. Alda has been terrific and very accommodating to our needs and we could not have asked for more from you or her.

Mary Jane, United States

Nordic odyssey, august 2018, i have already recommended nordic visitor to others..

I have already recommended Nordic visitor to others. The price was very reasonable, and accommodations top notch. As we did the self guided tour the side tours available that we took were top rate. We enjoyed being able to spend time exploring on our own and not being bound by a full schedule. The transportation was wonderful. Our guide, Alda, was very helpful.

Lisa, United States

A tale of four cities, may 2018, wonderful experience with nordic visitor..

Overall a wonderful trip and wonderful experience with Nordic Visitor.

Highlights of scandinavia, august 2017, the information packet provided at the beginning was very helpful.

The information packet provided at the beginning was very helpful particularly the maps being marked up

Jenna, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, august 2016, completely lived up to our expectations.

Irja was wonderful! She put our trip together perfectly and our entire visit from one country to the next was seamless. It could not have been any easier or well coordinated. My emails were responded to promptly and all my questions were answered thoroughly and with patience. I usually plan all my trips myself but it was so nice to let Irja know what I wanted and let her do all the tedious planning and booking. It was really amazing and our trip completely lived up to our expectations! I feel like a spoiled traveler now because Irja took a lot of the travel planning headache away from me and she did a really great job. We really appreciated the complimentary upgrades too!

Alan, United States

The golden triangle of scandinavia, april 2016, high degree of professionalism.

Probably the most important service I received was Cecilia's prompt answers to all my questions. My requests were handled expeditiously. As for the accommodations, they ranged from very good to excellent. Of particular note is the fact that Cecilia had to react quickly to hotel employees' strike at one of the hotels. She quickly found arranged for me to stay at another hotel, which was most impressive (both her ability to improvise and the quality of the hotel). She was also quite helpful in recommending certain places of interest to visit and the advisability of purchasing city passes for transportation and sightseeing.

Golden Route of the Nordic Countries, May 2019

Superb customer service.

Mikael provided superb customer service. Very pleased with his attention to detail. He was very courteous and quite helpful.

Anosha, United States

Nordic odyssey, july 2018, we will definitely use your services when we travel again.

We were very happy with everything. We did four countries during our tour and we enjoyed it very much. We were also able to customize many options which was great. I have to say a huge "thank you" to Alda. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She also helped us customize our tour the way we wanted. We will definitely use your services when we travel again.

Graham, Singapore

The classic scandinavian roundtrip, april 2018, it was so user friendly.

It was so user friendly and Cicci was very good in answering any queries promptly

Highlights of Scandinavia & Baltic Cruise, June 2017

Your professional attitude in handling the minutest details is something i admire the most.

I have done two once circle tour of Iceland and now Scandinavian east to west. Your professional attitude in handling the minutest details is something I admire the most. It helps everyone to be prepared. Thanks

Highlights of Scandinavia & Baltic Cruise, July 2016

We´d like to return.

The tour was highly enjoyable. We visited some wonderful places. Whilst we like to be independent, the organisation of our transport and accommodation was very good and allowed us to really relax and unwind. There are many places we'd like to return to. More time in Norway is certainly on our agenda!

Classic Scandinavia, June 2019

The location of the hotels could not have been better.

The location of the hotels could not have been better - all centrally located with access to points of interest and public transport. Transportation between cities was also well-planned.

Jasper, United States

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, may 2018, allowed us to truly relax.

We were just thrilled with how wonderful the trip was, and are very grateful to Alda for all of her hard work and flexibility with our changing needs and many requests. Having all of the trip details planned by you allowed us to truly relax and enjoy an unparalleled vacation.

Roger, South Africa

The golden triangle of scandinavia, september 2017, nordic visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Nordic Visitor handled everything very professionaly.

Marlene, New Zealand

Scandinavian highlights by car, september 2016, highly recommended.

My only question is: Why is there not an "Excellent" option? Our holiday was most excellent in every way...! From my first email enquiry regarding the tour to the last minute of our holiday every aspect was excellent. Cecilia made the whole planning experience smooth and seamless, and the tour itself was most excellent. Wow! What an incredible job Nordic Visitor does! We felt so spoilt because everything had been done for us... all we needed to do was drive and have fun. This was an incredible tour and I can't speak highly enough about the slick operation Nordic Visitor runs. Highly, highly recommended!

Laurie, United States

Highlights of scandinavia & finland cruise, july 2016.

The support that Cicci and her colleagues provided was outstanding. We had a few minor things that needed to be adjusted during our trip and we received immediate and prompt service. All questions were addressed quickly and when changes were required, all our requests were met with a willing attitude. The trip was wonderful and it was nice to know that we had someone to contact should we have encountered any problems.

The Classic Scandinavian Roundtrip, May 2019

Greatly appreciated.

The fact that the travel documents clearly laid out the necessary transfers for trains, boats, planes, etc. was greatly appreciated. When the transfers involved a tricky change, the documents made sure to describe the signs as well as possible to assist. It was also nice to have all of the documents given to us in a single email so access was simple and easy.

Duncan, Australia

Golden route of the nordic countries, may 2018, went very smoothly.

I was very impressed with the efficiency of your staff and how processes that were meant to work actually went very smoothly. We have been traveling for many years and your organization is the least stress creating travel group we have experienced.

Scandinavian Highlights by Car, September 2017

Definitely recommend your company.

I would definitely recommend your company. Very helpful on the phone when booking and arranging extra items such as GPS. Very good English spoken.

A Tale of Four Cities, July 2017

Amazing tour.

This was an amazing tour for us to take as a family holiday (with teenagers) giving us a little insight into each country. Clearly planned to make the most of each city.

Matt, United States

Scandinavian highlights by car, june 2016, went incredibly smoothly.

We had a great experience from the very beginning. Cicci was always quick to respond to emails and answered all our questions prior to us making our final booking. Once we booked all the details (hotels, etc) started coming in and it was really helpful to have the "highlights" booklet to help us plan what we wanted to see and where we should stop each day on our drive. Really everything went incredibly smoothly through out the entire trip! We have no complaints!!

Getting to Scandinavia

Many of Nordic Visitor’s tours of Scandinavia begin in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital and largest city. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the main gateway for international air travel in Sweden and is served by dozens of airlines. Furthermore, it serves as a major hub for SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and Norwegian Air.

Here are examples of other airlines that fly to Stockholm Arlanda: United Airlines, British Airways, Air France, EasyJet, Lufthansa, KLM, Icelandair, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways

We recommend checking airline websites directly for flight availability and timetables. You can also use an airfare search engine, such as Skyscanner, Dohop or Kayak, for example.

Flights are not included in Nordic Visitor packages, but all of our itineraries can be customised with extra nights in Stockholm, or another arrival city in Scandinavia, if you’d like to rest up after your air journey.

Different ways you can experience Scandinavia

We have tours for all varieties of travel styles and interests. See our options for exploring Scandinavia below.

Guided Small Groups

Independent cruise, independent train, scandinavian triangle, what to see and what to do on a tour of scandinavia.

The best way to enjoy a trip to Scandinavia is to visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same tour. Why? Because these countries share a similar cultural heritage and are well-connected via modern motorways, railways and waterways.

As such, we highly recommend a guided tour of the Highlights of Scandinavia or an independent tour of the Scandinavian Triangle . Both incorporate the capitals of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Travel between Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo via train and ferry and you’ll discover a land brimming with gorgeous scenery. Spend your days enjoying walking tours, savouring delicious Scandinavian meals, or cycling along the pedestrianised streets and bike lanes.

Come in the summer to enjoy long daylight hours, wild swimming and al fresco dining. In the winter, expect a festive wonderland and smaller crowds at top attractions. You may even get a chance to spot the northern lights!

It’s also good to know that our small group tours are close to all-inclusive Scandinavian holidays. We include all in-country transportation, hotel stays and breakfast. You’ll also receive personal travel documents, extra activities and tours to fill your days as well as around half of the evening meals.

As a specialised tour operator in Scandinavian countries, Nordic Visitor organises trips to this beautiful corner of the world. We have many more ideas and travel tips to help you explore Scandinavia your way!

Discover gems like the breathtaking Norwegian fjords, or travel further up the west coast towards the Lofoten Islands. Tours in Norway with services included

Enjoy a stress-free trip to Norway that includes well-reviewed hotels, activities, transportation, 24/7 helpline and more — all arranged by Norwegian travel experts. From independent train, cruise or self-drive holidays with plenty of perks, to more inclusive guided small group tours, you’re in good hands with Nordic Visitor.

Trips to Norway with almost everything included

When visiting a foreign country, isn’t it nice to have all the local travel arrangements made for you by someone who speaks the local language and has personally visited the cities and attractions you want to see? For stress-free trips to Norway, Nordic Visitor has you covered.

At Nordic Visitor, we use our extensive local knowledge of Norway to design custom Norwegian tour packages that are nearly all-inclusive, with rooms at top-rated accommodations , car rental bookings, train and cruise reservations, guided excursions and more - all of which we try out ourselves to ensure the highest quality for our guests. As one of Scandinavia’s leading travel agencies - and as certified agents for Havila and Hurtigruten cruises , our trustworthy supplier network allows us to offer a variety of included services in our Norway holidays. Furthermore, we specialise in tailoring itineraries to travellers’ interests.

Services included in Norway tour packages by Nordic Visitor

No matter whether you’re travelling on a self-drive tour, guided tour, cruise package, train holiday or a short break with day tours , all of our travel packages in Norway include services to make your trip as easy as possible, including:

  • Accommodations handpicked by our staff
  • Breakfast at each overnight location
  • A personalised itinerary with all your day-to-day details about included services and optional highlights
  • Our own Highlights of Norway guide listing popular attractions and practical travel information
  • Copies of all your travel documents sent to you before your trip
  • A 24/7 helpline for urgent assistance
  • All taxes and service fees - no hidden charges
  • For self-drive tours : rental car reservations with your choice of vehicle type and a road map marked with your route and overnights

With exception of our guided tours and selected self-drive holidays, most of our tours do not include lunches or dinners, so you can take your pick of Norway’s varied dining options. Furthermore, we don’t include international flights to Norway as part of our packages, as you can save money by booking directly with airlines and taking advantage of your own air miles or credit card points programmes.

Guided tours - the most inclusive way to travel in Norway

For an even more inclusive Norway travel package, we recommend Nordic Visitor’s guided small group tours . Each tour is designed and operated by our own local travel experts – thereby cutting out middleman costs – and includes more services and authenticity than you’d find from one of the “big bus” tour operators. All departures are 100% guaranteed, group sizes are limited to 16 travellers, and each tour includes travel to the fjords region of western Norway.

In addition to the basics we offer in all packages, our guided small group tours in Norway include:

  • A professional, English-speaking tour leader who oversees each day's activities
  • Entrance fees to attractions that are included in the itinerary
  • City sightseeing tours just for your group, led by expert local guides
  • Half board — some group dinners provided
  • Transportation by train, ferry and/or cruise ship, per the itinerary
  • Group transfers between hotels and train stations and/or cruise terminals

Many of our guided small group tours in Norway extend to neighbouring Scandinavian countries , giving you even more value for your money in a nearly all-inclusive trip.

Tailor your holiday to Norway with more included services

Nordic Visitor’s itineraries are designed to be comprehensive yet personalised, and you’ll have your own dedicated travel consultant to advise you about possible add-ons or upgrades to your vacation and make all arrangements for you.

Christin, United States

Best of northern norway classic - 71° north cape, december 2023.

The tour was perfect and went smoothly the entire time. Communication from Nordic Visitor was timely and detailed. Would book with this tour company again.

Ian, United Kingdom

Norway road trip - complete, july 2023, memories we'll cherish forever.

We found Norway to be a fabulous country and enjoyed every minute of our trip. The scenery was fantastic, the places visited were brilliant and the people were incredibly friendly and helpful. The information pack provided by Nordic Visitor was invaluable, the route chosen for us was superb and the places we stayed in were great. Likewise, the excursions offered, especially the Rib Safari were fantastic and gave us memories we'll cherish forever. Lastly, but by no means least, Irja, our travel consultant, couldn't have been more helpful and I would like to extend a huge thank you to her for all that she did.

Anne-Mari, Finland

Best of northern norway classic - 71° north cape, february 2023, unforgettable in so many ways.

It was unforgettable in so many ways, highlights after highlights. We knew to expect a lot after our trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, also organised by Nordic Visitor. Our expectations were exceeded and more. We saw northern lights three times, the food everywhere was excellent, experienced dog sledding in the moonlight and sleeping in the SnowHotel, and we saw a white reindeer! How lucky we are to have experienced all that. We have now returned home, happy and full of awe.

James, Australia

Northern lights by train and cruise, october 2023, a great experience.

Very well-organised tour and a great experience. Nordic Visitor were very professional and their experience was evident in choosing the well-located and comfortable accommodation they selected for us. Best of all we got to see the northern lights!

Jonathan, United States

Norway fjord route by car - classic, june 2023, incredibly happy.

Our travel agent, Małgorzata, was amazing to work with! She was able to add a few extra days in Oslo and arranged transportation via train to Bergen. Overall, I thought booking this vacation online and making payments was seamless. All the hotels we stayed in were nice, clean and safe! We loved the breakfast buffets, they were top notch! Also, collecting our rental car and navigating in a foreign country was seamless. We are incredibly happy that our tour package that we received at our first hotel included a physical map that had our tour highlighted.

Costel, Romania

Northern lights norway classic, february 2023, i'll be recommending nordic visitor to my friends.

The trip was really amazing. We had an absolutely superb time in Tromsø; hotel and excursions were spot on. The guide and whole the staff was really professional. Professional photos taken by the guide were really fantastic. They gave us excellent care, more than what we have experienced on any trip. Our favourite experience was the snowmobile, but catamaran trip was great too. Certainly I will be recommending it to my friends. I was very pleased that those who delivered the services showed a lot of professionalism.

Violetta, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, august 2023, very satisfied customer.

This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Dian, United States

Classic norway, may 2023, extraordinary.

Extraordinary! Everything went off as planned without a hitch. Our travel guide, Juliana, was exceptional, very responsive in answering our questions and providing updates.

Oi, Singapore

Norway in a nutshell® - classic, september 2022, very satisfied with nordic visitor.

We were very satisfied with the tour and overall experience with Nordic Visitor. The hotels were strategically chosen and the quality of hotels was satisfactory. The optional tours were also highly recommended. Timings of the schedules throughout the tour were ideal and not rushed.

Julie, United States

Wonders of the norwegian fjords, august 2023, best vacation we ever had.

Our family of 5 (3 adult children) loved our Norway fjord tour. We saw the most beautiful scenery and loved each hotel. The food was delicious. Something for everyone. Our guide Al and driver Chris kept things running smoothly. We will have memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Nordic Visitor. Best vacation we ever had!

Alan, United Kingdom

Norway in a nutshell® express - winter, march 2023, an excellent decision to book with nordic visitor.

Following research, we decided to book with Nordic Visitor. This was an excellent decision. The booking process was easy and informative and Hanna was always available for guidance. The accommodation provided was top class and, importantly, convenient to the train stations from which we travelled. Our tour was amazing throughout with stunning scenery and sights.

Gailmarie, United States

Highlights of norway, july 2022, the tour gives you a fabulous overview of norway.

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway. We did a lot of travel in between sights but this enabled us to have a real breadth of experience, from fjords to mountain passes, railway adventures and small boats. Our tour guide was excellent and the sights and experiences outlined for us were top-notch. The materials provided about our tour were excellent and well thought out.

Continuing to Hrafnseyri, you can visit a museum dedicated to another Icelandic hero, Jón Sigurðsson, who was influential in Iceland’s battle for independence.  Then you’ll make a stop at the impressive veiled Dynjandi waterfall before heading to your accommodation. Next, the group will hop aboard the Baldur ferry to journey across Breiðafjörður Bay to the village of Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, passing the island of Flatey along the way. The rest of the day will be spent on Snæfellsnes, a truly spectacular peninsula. You’ll get to snap photos of the Kirkjufell, one of Iceland’s most famous mountains thanks to its unusual shape. Essential information

Everything you need to know about this tour before you book

We recommend that you read carefully through the following information before booking this small guided group tour in Iceland. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here so you know what to expect. You’ll also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our online Iceland Travel Guide .

On a guided group tour, a local guide will lead you and fellow travellers on an adventure in Iceland. You’ll follow a set itinerary, going on walks, excursions and dining together as a group.

Your guide will act as a driver and you’ll benefit from their in-depth knowledge of Iceland along the way. We carefully select local guides with years of experience that come highly recommended. They’ll share with you their love of their country, stories and historical knowledge as well as recommendations.

Our guides always have a trick up their sleeves to surprise you and make your experience in Iceland extra special.

You’ll travel by minibus, which is equipped with Wi-Fi. The groups are capped at 16 people so you can enjoy a more personal experience.

The driver-guide will also be there for you if you need anything during the tour. Plus, you’ll have access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip should you need to contact us.

All your services will be pre-booked by your personal travel consultant at Nordic Visitor. This includes your airport transfers, accommodation in Iceland, minibus and activities, as specified in the itinerary.

Yes, when you book your Iceland tour with Nordic Visitor, you always get airport transfers to and from Keflavík Airport included. This will be a private, shared or bus transfer, depending on your itinerary. Please check the details of your tour to confirm.

If you add extra nights to your stay before or after the scheduled trip, we’ll rearrange your transfers to fit your new itinerary.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with your travel consultant if you have any specific requests about optional activities or services.

Due to the nature of this tour and activities included, it’s not recommended for families with young children. That said, it is suitable for well-travelled, active children of 12 years or older. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

To make sure you and your fellow travellers have a comfortable journey, we need to limit the size and amount of luggage in the bus.

Each guest can bring one suitcase or large bag that can be stored in the back of the minibus and one smaller item (e.g., a backpack or daypack) to keep inside the van for daily essentials like camera, wallet, medications and so forth. Unfortunately carry-on suitcases (cabin bags) are too large to store in the van’s overhead racks.

If you have any questions about luggage your Nordic Visitor travel consultant will be able to assist you.

On your guided group tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our local Iceland travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

You can view the detailed list of hotels for this trip under the accommodation tab.

During the booking steps, you can choose a single or double room. Please note that in Iceland room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double room often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms are not available for this tour. If your group contains 3 or more people, please contact us for booking assistance.

This itinerary includes a few walks in nature. This means you must be prepared and able to walk between 3–5 kilometres (1.8–3 miles) daily. You also need to be able to carry your own luggage when boarding the minibus and at each hotel.

You’ll board an amphibian boat tour and sail between the massive icebergs bobbing on the picturesque Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The excursion takes roughly 40 minutes and includes an English-speaking guide. They will tell you about the geology of the region and share interesting facts about the lagoon.

Everyone on board will receive a life vest which they must wear during the cruise.

Please note that the glacier lagoon boat tour is not available in April. Instead, the group will enjoy a free lunch together in the area.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can ask your guide or call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

The Reykjavík-based travel expert on call will handle any unforeseen situations for you, such as unusual weather or events.

Nordic Visitor continues to follow the rules of local authorities in each destination.

If you become unwell and test positive with Covid-19, you may be asked to leave the tour. This is to ensure all visitors on your group are kept safe, especially if there are people with underlying health conditions.

We highly recommend you purchase travel insurance as this may impact your travels in destination and incur extra costs.

If you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Iceland.

Visiting from another country? You can find the complete list of countries whose nationals require a visa to enter Iceland on the website of Iceland’s  Directorate of Immigration . If you do require a visa, they maintain a list of local embassies that can assist you with the process.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Iceland. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Read more about visas, airports and airlines in the  getting to Iceland  section of our travel guide.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Iceland for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore, what you want to see in Iceland and any events you might like to attend.

In summer, June to August , you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours, compared to the winter. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book your summer trip in May or September . These shoulder season months have more tour and attraction availability.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter, apart from the Christmas holiday season. This is the ideal time to try to spot the northern lights.

Find out what  annual Icelandic events and festivals  are on in our travel guide. Or read more about the  best time to visit Iceland  on our blog.

Because of its northerly location close to the Arctic Circle, Iceland enjoys long days throughout the summer.

Around the summer solstice, from early June until mid-July, you’ll experience almost 24 hours of daylight. This phenomenon, known as the midnight sun, occurs within the Arctic Circle and is when the sun doesn’t fully set below the horizon.

These long daylight hours give you plenty of time to drive around and explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to  time and daylight in Iceland .

Summer in Iceland is mild and boasts the best weather and longest days of the year. You can expect temperatures of around 10–15°C (50–59°F), with potential lows of 5°C (41°F) and highs of 25°C (77°F).

It’s good to know that weather conditions are changeable in Iceland, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page  Iceland weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Even in summertime Iceland’s climate can feel cool. As you’ll probably spend a lot of time outdoors, you should be ready for a variety of weather conditions.

Here is a recommended summer packing list for your trip to Iceland:

  • Durable insulated jacket
  • Rain gear, including sturdy wind and waterproof layers, like a jacket and trousers
  • Robust walking shoes with a good grip
  • Mid-layers such as a fleece or woollen jumper
  • A few pairs of warm hiking socks
  • Hat, gloves and scarf
  • Swimwear for visiting geothermal pools or spas
  • Electronic equipment such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and eye mask for the summer sun
  • And don’t forget your camera!

As you won’t be able to access your suitcase while sitting on the bus, we recommend packing a backpack for your daily essentials. For more information, check out this Iceland packing list .

There are limited laundry facilities along the Ring Road and in Iceland’s countryside. Some hotels do offer dry cleaning or laundry services for an additional cost.

With Nordic Visitor, breakfast is always included at your accommodations in Iceland. You’ll also have some dinners included throughout the guided portion of this tour, as stated in your itinerary.

These will either be a set dinner menu or a buffet with a variety of fresh, local ingredients. You’ll be able to choose from meat, fish or vegetarian options by notifying your travel consultant in advance of any dietary restrictions.

Please note that drinks are not included with your dinners.

As for the other meals, your guide will stop along the way for you to pick up snacks, drinks and lunch.

The amount of spending money you’ll need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 2,000–3,000 ISK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 3,000–6,000 ISK. Meanwhile at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 7,000 ISK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

As you’ll be travelling as part of a guided group tour, your itinerary for this portion of your trip is set. But you can still customise other parts of your package.

For instance, you could add extra nights in Reykjavík before or after the guided portion of your trip. This will give you more time to explore the Icelandic capital city at your own pace. You can add these additional days while booking your package online.

You might also like to add optional excursions and day trips to your itinerary. On each tour page, you’ll see recommended optional activities such as whale watching, spas and food tours.

Please get in touch with us if you have something specific in mind or have any questions about customising your guided group tour.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the guaranteed departure calendar to see the availability. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

Nordic Visitor offers 10–20% deposits to reserve your tour. The remaining balance is due 30 days before you travel.

Many tours are also open for the following year if you like to plan well in advance. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

At that time, they’ll confirm the availability of your tour. Then the booking process starts, which may take a few weeks. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip. You will also receive more information about what to expect during your trip.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

You can get in touch with our Iceland travel experts ahead of your trip if you have any questions. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Iceland Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Icelanders speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying souvenirs, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything. Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll email you copies of your travel documents.

When you arrive in Iceland, you’ll receive a welcome bag with hard copies of your itinerary, attraction and tour vouchers, the Nordic Visitor Iceland Travel Guide and more.

So when do you check in? And what can you expect upon landing in Keflavík?

After picking up your luggage, you will be greeted by a driver holding a sign with your name in the arrivals hall. The driver will hand over your welcome package with hard copies of your travel documents. You’ll then be driven to your hotel in Reykjavík.

Check-in times vary between hotels and guesthouses, but it normally starts between 2 PM and 4 PM.

You are welcome to request an early check-in for an additional fee. Although this isn’t always available, you’ll be able to store your luggage at the hotel so you can start exploring before check-in. Please contact your travel consultant well in advance of your arrival if you’d like an early check-in.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will need to check out from your room, but will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before catching your transfer to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Icelandic Króna (ISK), the official currency of Iceland.

Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate as issued by the Central Bank of Iceland. This means conversions from ISK to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

These should tide you over until you’re in Iceland to take your own pictures.

It couldn't have gone smoother

We found Nordic Visitor's Complete Iceland to be both fun and informative. We liked the pace of the tour. All the stops were so interesting and beautiful. It was fun to learn about the life in Iceland. We appreciated Reynir's professionalism and kindness in handling our Covid situation. Our second tour guide, Jon Paul, was also very hospitable, sociable and engaging. Our days with both tour guides were delightful. The trip went very well and it couldn't have gone smoother.

Complete iceland, august 2023, great service.

You were responsive, competent, always on the ball, able to walk me through any concerns, notwithstanding being 16,000km away. You were without doubt the easiest tour folk I have ever dealt with. Your documentation was most useful and appropriate

Linda, Australia

Excellent tour.

I am so glad I went to Iceland with Nordic Visitor. The Complete Iceland tour was the only tour out of 47 I researched to include the Westfjords. I've been to New Zealand twice for a month, but my three weeks in Iceland was even better! I'm a geology enthusiast and you can't do better than Iceland. The enumerable mountains, cones, waterfalls, and lava flows were enchanting. And then add in the incredible itinerary, comfortable tour bus with Wi-Fi, and guide (Reynir), and it made for a magical trip for my four friends and me. I say this even though I fell into the glacier lagoon outflow and ruined my phone for the rest of the trip. So glad we stayed before and after in Reykjavík as it is a lovely, walkable city. Keep up the excellent work!

Karen, United States

This was a good tour of a fabulous country. The beauty and majesty of Iceland is incredible, don't miss it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORDIC CRUISES

Just in case you want to learn more about cruise packages or Nordic Visitor destinations, we’ve collected the most requested queries and answered them here. If you want details on our company and booking processes, then check out our general FAQs or booking information page .

1. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE POPULAR?

Northern Europe is a popular holiday destination for so many reasons! It is a region brimming with gorgeous scenery and vibrant cultures, with the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of tours and activities.

From the fjords of Norway to the ice fields of Greenland, and from the world-class museums of Scandinavia to the Celtic heritage of Scotland, there is simply so much to uncover in Northern Europe. Best of all, you can visit the region year-round, with each season offering its own appeal.

Northern Europe is so diverse yet it is very easy to travel around, so you can see more than one country in the same trip. Flight times between destinations are short, although you can also journey by road, rail or cruise for scenic views along the way.

What’s more, the Nordic countries – that’s Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – regularly rank in the top 10 safest places in the world to visit. This is partly because they generally have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety, among other reasons.

Another plus is that most people in the Nordics speak English, which means you can easily interact with the locals if you are an English speaker yourself. In Scotland and Ireland, English is the main language.

2. WHY IS NORTHERN EUROPE GREAT TO VISIT ON A CRUISE?

You can easily travel around Northern Europe by cruise as there are fast, reliable and efficient links within the region. For example, Scandinavian cruise tours are very popular as they offer you the chance to visit a number of destinations across the Baltic and North Seas.

Cruising in Norway is a great option as you can visit various fjords and explore the country’s coastal landscapes. It’s also a fantastic way to discover the Arctic region, travelling aboard the reputable Hurtigruten cruise vessel.

In Greenland, cruising is the best way to reach remote corners of the country as they cannot be accessed by road. For a real adventure, spend a few days aboard a cruise to marvel at the Ilulissat Icefjord, whale watch in Sisimiut, and see mountains towering above the sea at Maniitsoq.

3. WHAT ARE THE TOP SIGHTS IN NORTHERN EUROPE?

Some of the top sights in Northern Europe include glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland, and fjords, mountains and valleys in Norway. Sweden flaunts lushly forested islands and countryside, while Scotland and Ireland are blessed with dramatic national parks and coastlines.

Find out the best places to visit in Northern Europe with our insider guides:

  • The best places to visit in Scandinavia
  • The best things to see and do in Norway
  • The best places to visit in Iceland
  • The best places to visit in Scotland
  • The best places to visit in Ireland

4. WHAT IS THE BEST NORDIC CRUISE?

There are so many Nordic cruises to choose from, so finding the best one depends on what you want to do and how much time you have.

On Scandinavian cruise tours , you can visit Sweden, Denmark and Norway on the same trip. You could spend a week visiting the three Scandinavian countries, or stay for longer to explore the region at leisure and even incorporate other destinations into your tour.

A Baltic cruise is a great option if you want to experience a mix of Northern European cities and cultures.

Take your pick from various Baltic Sea cruise ports to stop off at. You might like to begin in Helsinki, Finland. You can then hop over to Tallinn, Estonia before sailing to Stockholm, Sweden. You may also wish to consider St Petersburg, Russia, as a port of call.

Alternatively, you could focus on exploring Norway by cruise . The west coast is 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) long, so there is plenty to discover! A Havila or Hurtigruten cruise will take you to glittering fjords and picturesque shorelines, ranging from 2 to 7 days at sea with shore excursions along the way.

How about an adventure to the far north? If you love immersing yourself in wild, remote landscapes, then opt for a Greenland cruise . Greenland is one of the last unexplored frontiers in the world, with its icy tundras, vast glaciers and Arctic wildlife.

Your voyage could whisk you to the hard-to-reach corners of Greenland. Cruise along glacier lagoons to see icebergs calving into the water, spot whales in the sea, and admire mountainous scenery from the water.

5. WHAT IS A SELF-GUIDED TOUR?

On a self-guided tour, you travel independently without a guide or a group. You’re certainly not alone, though, as your dedicated Nordic Visitor travel consultant has arranged everything before your arrival. They provide you with a personalised itinerary complete with tickets, bookings and recommendations.

We have a 24/7 emergency helpline as well, so should anything unexpected arise, we’re only a phone call away.

6. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO CRUISE NORWAY’S FJORDS?

Each travel season offers different reasons to visit the Norwegian fjords, so there is no “bad time” to go! However we can give you a good idea of what it will be like in Norway at different times of the year, so that you can decide when is best for your trip.

Visit Norway’s fjords in the spring and summer (May to August) for long daylight hours and warmer weather. This is the ideal time to see the fjords surrounded with greenery and to join bird watching or kayaking excursions. You could also experience the midnight sun at the height of summer.

Alternatively, chasing the northern lights in Norway might be on your wish list. Many travellers head to Northern Norway hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive “dancing” aurora borealis.

In which case, we recommend visiting in the autumn and winter, between September and March. You’ll need the right conditions to catch sight of them, such as solar activity, dark skies, and low light pollution. Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Norway on our blog.

Whether you see the northern lights or not, cruising the Norwegian fjords in winter is ideal if you want to avoid the crowds. The shoulder season (autumn and early spring) is also a good time to go as top attractions are quieter, with fewer visitors compared to the summer.

Whichever time of year you prefer to travel, we have reliable departure dates and there are cruise tours available year-round. You can find out more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

7. DO I NEED A VISA FOR A BALTIC CRUISE?

Whether you need a visa or not will depend on where you are travelling from. For example, you do not need a visa for a Baltic cruise if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom or USA. For all other nationalities, we recommend getting in touch with your local consulate to check.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can visit St Petersburg without a visa for up to 72 hours if you book a package cruise tour. Usually British and American citizens require a visa for Russia, but booking a Baltic cruise is one of the few exceptions.

8. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

In most cases, yes, you can view and select Nordic Visitor arrival dates online. You can always add extra days to your itinerary before or after the cruise.

9. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, you can extend all Nordic Visitor packages with extra days. Every tour can be customised by adding days to the beginning or end of your trip. You can also add extra days within your itinerary if you are travelling on a self-drive or private tour .

For cruises there are fixed departure dates as the vessel must adhere to an itinerary. But of course you can add days before or after your cruise experience. The same applies to small group tours .

10. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

We recommend you look over flights for timings and prices, but hold off purchasing until your package has been secured. Once your dedicated travel consultant has introduced themselves and sent over the confirmation email, you will have all of the information you need to pick and purchase flights.

11. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

You should always bring sensible layers to add or remove when travelling in Northern Europe. The weather can be unpredictable, so don’t forget to pack:

  • A warm jumper or fleece
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes or boots
  • Warm socks (especially for winter travel)
  • Sunscreen (for summer trips)

An umbrella will also come in handy, and cruise passengers may wish to bring binoculars to get a closer look at the fjords and local wildlife.

For a detailed list of what to bring and how to prepare for your trip, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway , Scotland and Ireland .
