Tour was great. We saw some beautiful places and everybody was very friendly. The only minor problem I had was getting up a little earlier than probably most seniors do. we do understand that to see so much we have to put in the hours. he included meals were great and I would recommend your company and do another tour if I found something I liked. Tour guide was exceptional and very knowledgable with ability to stretch a little here or there to make everything fit in. A bus driver was also great. He had a good sense of humour and was very helpful when we were getting on and off the bus.
A great tour visiting a wide range of locations along the US and Canadian Maritimez

Kiera was amazing! Super knowledgeable about everything and really sweet. She always tried to show us the best views and picture spots.

Our first hotel, Coast Calgary Downtown, was in a very sketchy area. We witnessed a stabbing on the side street that left us feeling very uncomfortable. The Banff Aspen Lodge was wonderful, the Whistler Inn in Jasper was very quaint and welcoming. The burger at the Discovery Center was inedible but the French fries were good. Probably why the tour guide told us to eat the French fries first. Both drivers were very good as were the tour guides though we did prefer one guide over the other. The itinerary was great though more time at some stops would have been welcomed. More diversity in the travelers would have been welcomed also.
Very good route and seen a lot of the beautiful nature

Trafalgar

Very nice tour. Would have liked more time in a place or two but, overall, good.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

This is a long overdue review and I don’t know why I didn’t take the time to write this before. This Ontario and French Canada tour with Susan was amazing. Everything was well organized and enough time were spent at each attraction. Totally have no complaints!
Good tour with a good range of sites to see, our driver Alazar and guide Gem were great. Accommodation was good, always clean, some were a little bit noisy

Too much time taken between travelling
A good chance to learn more about the Canadian way of live and to see a lot - especially by using a guided tour.

The itinerary was well organised visiting interesting spots, our guide Madalena was great, although it was her first time leading a large group she did very well, she was professional, keeping time, smiling and she did not show any preference for people in the group.
Very affordable, excellent guide and Brilliant Driver.

I had such a great time. This was my first time travelling solo and I was a bit nervous - but you get to know your group pretty fast and end up feel like you're spending a week somewhere absurdly beautiful, with a good balance of time among new frien...

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

 • Excellent - 11,764 reviews for Canada tours
Overall: Overall, the Canadian Rockies are spectacular. All of the people in our group were fun to be with, and we made some great friends. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, patient, and flexible given the physical abilities (or inabilities) of the members of the group and tried to tailor the tour to accommodate as many people in the activities as possible. My issue was with Intrepid's misrepresentation of the physical activity level rating, the inaccurate pricing of optional activities, the required travel insurance policy, the sub-par lodging, and the labeling of the trip as a Northern Lights trip when there were only 2 nights out of 10 listed in the itinerary that gave us an opportunity to see them. Lodging: The hotels were sub-par. The Metterra in Edmonton didn’t have a functioning hair dryer and the TV didn’t work (during the SuperBowl) The Holiday Inn Express in Slave Lake didn't have a functioning fireplace in the lobby, where we gathered to eat dinner. It was cold as it was adjacent to the front doors the were constantly opening and closing. The TV in the breakfast room and where we met to eat take out dinner was on a political station and the volume was loud. The person working at the front desk stated that the remote control had been stolen, so we couldn't turn it off or adjust the volume. The Lake Louise Inn had disgusting carpeting that we didn’t even want to walk on with bare feet. The Rundlestone Lodge in Banff did not have any food or drink options in the hotel and we had to walk to another hotel to get our included breakfast. The breakfast at that hotel was also sub-par. The eggs were powdered eggs. The bread, bagels, and pastries were all stale and hard. Everyone had a room where the window looked DIRECTLY into the pool area. It was noisy with kids screaming at the pool. One of the members of our group had to pay to upgrade her room, so she wouldn't have to hear the noise from the pool area until 10:30 PM. Intrepid Activity Level rating: Intrepid listed this physical activity level rating as a 2/5, which is one step above sunbathing. It said that the activities were easy and no prior physical fitness was necessary to do most of the activities. First, many of the activities were done at higher altitudes than most were accustomed to, which makes any activity more challenging. Second, walking on ice, hiking on steep mountain trails, and snowshoeing in deep snow require a much higher level of fitness than casual walking. Itinerary: The itinerary was labeled a Canadian Rockies and Northern Lights tour. There were only 2 nights listed on the itinerary (in Slave Lake) that there was even an opportunity to go out to see them. The northern lights and weather conditions are unpredictable, so it should not be listed as a “northern lights tour” unless there would be an opportunity to see them every night. The tour guide had drive time restrictions and couldn’t take us out every night to remote areas to get the chance to see the northern lights. On an Iceland tour, we had our lodging (with restaurant and bar) in remote areas with minimal light pollution, so I could set my alarm a few times throughout the night to go outside to see if the lights were visible. The quality of northern lights can change on an hourly basis and it is not reasonable to expect to stay outside in a remote area without light pollution all night to see them. All the hotels we stayed at had significant light pollution preventing us from going outside the hotel to check the quality of the northern lights. Don’t label it a northern lights tour. It was a Canadian Rockies tour. Slave Lake activities: The ice fishing listed as a possible alternate activity was never discussed. No one said the lakes were safe or not safe for fishing. It was not discussed as an option at all. Snowshoeing was also listed as an activity at this location, but was not given as an option. Jasper activities: Walking on ice in the Maligne Canyon was challenging and risky for people who aren’t physically fit. There were a few people that had to skip the grotto for fear of injuring themselves by going further. Similarly, on the drive along the Icefields Parkway, none of us were able to hike all the way to the toe of Athabasca Glacier due to the level of fitness required. Lake Louise activites: Difficulties with the level of fitness required also impacted the hike at Johnston Canyon. Some people struggled but managed to make it to the lower bridge, but many could not go further due to the fitness level needed to hike up the steep trails. Snowshoeing was offered as an option and one group member had to insist to go snowshoeing here, since the terrain was flat. Otherwise, it was also not included as an option. Banff activities: This was the snowshoe hike at Sunshine Mountain. Despite it being listed as an option twice before on the itinerary, this was the first day we went as a group. It was challenging to say the least. Half of the group were not able to participate due to the level of fitness required that was misrepresented in the tour description rating. The next day the grotto ice walk was listed, but not offered and instead we went on a hike. Optional Activities: There was a SIGNIFICANT discrepancy of the prices listed for the optional activities on the tour description and the actual prices. It seems the prices listed by Intrepid were pre-COVID prices and had never been updated. I understand if there would be a minor difference in prices, but they were 40-70% higher than Intrepid quoted. Here are examples of the activity and price per person. Dogsledding (an anticipated highlight of the trip, which we ended up not going on due to price): Intrepid price $200 CAD and actual price was $315CAD. Lake Louise Sleigh ride: Intrepid price $37CAD and actual price was $52CAD Lake Louise Ice Skating including hockey stick: Intrepid price $20CAD and actual price was $29CAD Banff Hot Springs: Intrepid price $8CAD and actual price was $17.50CAD Travel Insurance: I have the AmEx Platinum card that has very good travel insurance coverage. Intrepid forced me to buy a separate policy stating that I needed a “policy number” and not just claims made coverage that my credit card supplies. I had to pay an extra $174USD to get travel insurance when my credit card already covers travel insurance. Then I found that one of the guests in our group used her credit card policy and did not require a separate travel insurance policy to go on this trip. That was infuriating! White Mountain Adventures: White Mountain Adventures was coordinating this trip and I felt they were at a disadvantage to plan a trip when the Intrepid itinerary and physical activity level was misrepresented prior to the trip. Scott, our tour guide, was very kind, knowledgeable, patient, accommodating, and flexible to try to meet the expectations and physical abilities of those on the tour.
the trip overall was good but a few things to be aware of: The Edmonton Sky shuttle has not been in service since 2020! You must take a taxi. The guide was surprised that we were told to schedule extras through her and by the time the trip started, much of what we wanted was already booked out. You must book the extras yourself. Neither intrepid nor tour radar does this. this was unclear in all the communications. you can't talk to a tour radar person. on line chat is fine if you are not in a hurry for answers. That aside, the guide was knowledgeable, pleasant, and worked hard to give all tour participants an extraordinary time.

I enjoyed the tour and guide was knowledgeable.
I took a guided tour from New York City to Quebec City with the Europomundo tour group. I knew it would be mostly in Spanish and although I know that I didn't get a full translation in English and/or facts and figures were made up along the way, it did not diminish from the enjoyment I had undertaking the tour. I was not the only Spanish speaker in the group, which was good. I thought the local tours were good, although the local guide in Montreal was a far-left, climate-change disciple, which I did not appreciate. Tour guides are employed to provide information not opinions. The guides we had in Boston and Quebec City were excellent and their bi-lingual content was well-delivered. The main guide, Jeanette was friendly, had a happy disposition, and was available to everyone, and our bus driver, Anna, was also excellent, ensuring we got to our destinations safely. Overall, the tour was very good and I am glad I was able to have the opportunity to travel overland with a group from New York City to Quebec City on a group tour.

Jude was an awesome tour guide, she was really accommodating and has so much knowledge about the places we visited. She’s also super passionate about what she does, and she always shared the best stories. Couldn’t recommend her more!
The tour was so fun! A decent amount of time spent in Whistler and Banff, and the accommodation for both locations were central, making it easy to go out and explore and we didn't have to worry about how to get into town. Definitely recommend this trip! This tour is a must!

Enjoyed all the hiking. Beautiful area! The guide was exuberant and fun. Lots of energy.
I had a fantasy time with Timberwolf. Our guides Eren and Valentin were super enthusiastic, really accommodating and very helpful. If an obstacle arose they made sure that the group and had some great alternative hikes or activities and they came up with some great ones. The only reason it isn’t a 5 star review is that the tent equipment wasn’t really fit for purpose. They were showing a lot of wear and tare with not much ability to keep things dry if the heavens opened. The ground sheet/inner was soaking up all the moisture from the very unprotected corners. A little bit of investment in camp equipment would make this a top notch tour company.

Very good tour. Excellent guide (Karen). So knowledgeable and entertaining too. Itinerary had to be tweaked unfortunately, as there was no theatre production in Charlottetown. But a fair substitute was found. All in all a great, stress free way to see this beautiful part of the country.
The wonders of the Bay of Fundy tour was the best tour I’ve ever been on. We were a small group who enjoyed each other’s company and shared many varied and interesting experiences. As a solo traveler I was welcomed by everyone in the group and never felt on my own. Our tour director, Eunice, was welcoming, knowledgeable and went the extra mile to ensure we really experienced the local culture and delicacies. Our coach driver, Hank, who was also welcoming and knowledgeable, had a quietly confident manner which made you feel extremely safe when on the road. He also went the extra mile to ensure we got the most out of every experience. I would highly recommend this tour.

travel agency to canada

From navigating interisland flights to recommendations for resorts and hotels, our travel advisor’s experience was invaluable. When we decide to extend our stay, she handled all communications with the resort, including getting us an upgrade to an overwater bungalow at a preferred rate.

We planned to honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. As the pandemic progressed and we couldn’t go, our advisor jumped right on it to get refunds and gave us new options that suited our interests, were safe, and that were within our budget.

My travel advisor got me the details about the protocols and precautions in advance, so there were no surprises along the way. She also mapped our drive ties, options for routes to Cape Cod, and even stops along the way.

My advisor made planning so much fun. I approached him with the states we wanted to visit; he came back with adventures in each one. If it weren’t for him, we would’ve missed one of the trip’s more meaningful moments at Memphis’ Civil Rights Museum.

Why book with an agent

With their training — and being well-traveled themselves — good travel advisers can offer you options you might not have considered . Some travel advisers are generalists; others specialize in niches, such as cruises, or in multigenerational group travel or in particular geographic destinations. If you book a cruise through an agent, he or she is likely to be familiar with various lines, sailings, cabins and excursions. Some agents even have subspecialties, such as riverboat cruising.

Testimonials

September 2022

We wanted to reach out to extend our thanks….thank you for a trip of a lifetime! Our family recently went on a two week private tour to Israel with Peerless, and the experience was fantastic. Planning a multi-generational, international trip, at the height of COVID, was intimidating, however, Eliana ensured that the entire process was easy. Eliana provided invaluable guidance for planning all aspects of our trip – airfare, hotel accommodations, sightseeing, guides, insurance, and food to name but a few. She provided creative and unique ideas to ensure that our trip was seamless, exciting, safe, educational, emotional, and meaningful. Eliana always went above and beyond and had endless patience for our ever-changing needs. The client service and care we received was incredible and we are thrilled with the end result. Since returning from our trip, we have sent several of our friends to Eliana and to Peerless because we are so confident they will be ask happy with their experience as we were.

Thank you!!

How to Apply for an Umrah Visa from Canada: A Complete Guide

Makkah Saudi Arabia

About this trip

Planning your Umrah journey from Canada? Learn how to apply for an Umrah visa hassle-free with this comprehensive guide

Available Packages

How to apply for an umrah visa from canada: a complete guide .

Once you decide to perform Umrah, you might be curious about the Umrah visa. As a Canadian citizen, you might wonder how to apply for an Umrah visa from Canada and what options are available. The visa options and requirements vary from region to region. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the process in your area and take guidance from a local authorized travel agency.

You have two visa options as a Canadian citizen who wants to travel to the Kingdom for a voluntary pilgrimage. We will tell you all about the options and everything else you need to do to ensure a smooth Umrah visa application process. So, let’s not waste more time and get to this comprehensive guide.

What is an Umrah Visa?

Muslims who want to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah must have an Umrah visa. This is a single-entry visa that Muslims get solely for pilgrimage purposes. You can perform Umrah with this visa any time of the year, excluding the mandatory pilgrimage days.

This visa is issued for a limited time and even restricts you to specific areas within the Kingdom. It is explicitly issued to Muslims who want to fulfil their religious obligations only.

Therefore, this visa comes with certain perks. For instance, you can take Zamzam water with you back home.

Application Process of Umrah Visa

Here are step-by-step instructions on how to apply for an Umrah visa from Canada.

Contact the Saudi Embassy or an Umrah Travel Agency

Once you decide to get an Umrah visa, you must contact the Saudi embassy in Canada or an authorized Umrah travel agency . Make sure you choose a reliable travel agency with an excellent reputation to get authentic services without inconveniences or extra costs.

Submit All the Required Documents

After choosing a reliable Umrah travel agency, you must collect all your required documents. Some of the documents that you will need include;

 • A valid passport
 • A return ticket
 • Passport-sized photographs
 • Booking proof of accommodation
 • Proof of necessary vaccinations

You can ask your agents to provide you with the necessary travel documents. This will enable you to collect everything and submit it in one go without paying multiple visits to the agents.

Fill out the Umrah Visa Application Form

Your travel agents can fill out your Umrah visa application form for you. But you must help them and provide authentic information to avoid inconvenience. After this, you can relax as your agents will handle everything.

What is the Saudi Tourist eVisa?

The other visa option you will have as a Canadian citizen is the Saudi tourist eVisa. Saudi Arabia offers this visa to citizens of 49 countries only, and luckily, Canada is one of them. This electronic visa is issued for various purposes, including business and tourism. Muslims can also participate in religious activities like voluntary pilgrimage with this visa.

You can either get a single-entry or a multiple-entry tourist visa. It enables you to explore the tourist attractions of the Kingdom, too, in addition to performing your spiritual pilgrimage. Another unique feature of this visa is that it is valid for a year. If you have a multiple-entry visa, you can visit the Kingdom multiple times a year for 90 days every visit.

The Saudi Tourist eVisa application process is quite simple. You will not have to contact the embassy or consulate. You can easily apply online, upload all the necessary documents, pay the fees, and be ready.

Application Process for Saudi Tourist eVisa

Do you want to get a Saudi tourist eVisa? Follow the below-mentioned step-by-step instructions.

Fill out the eVisa Form

Unlike applying for an Umrah visa, a tourist eVisa doesn’t require you to apply through an embassy or travel agent. You can do it all by yourself online. You can fill out the eVisa application form without even leaving your home.

Upload all Your Documents

As mentioned earlier, the eVisa application process is entirely virtual. You will not have to leave your place or visit your agents multiple times. After completing the application form, you must also upload all required documents.

Pay the Visa Fees

The last step is paying your eVisa fees. You can also do it virtually. This process is convenient and will save you a lot of time and effort.

Wait for the Visa Approval

Once you have paid your fee, the only thing that you will have to do is wait for the visa approval. It usually takes 3 to 6 days to get the eVisa approval. If you are in a hurry, you can also avail of the rush processing to get your visa approved in 1 to 3 days.

Final Words

If you are curious about how to apply for an Umrah visa from Canada, you might have a clear idea after reading this guide. We have mentioned the two visa options that you might have along with the application process. So, it is time to choose which visa will suit you the best and hire a reliable travel agency to help you through the process.

Ask questions before you buy or adopt a dog

Changes to the list of countries at high-risk for dog rabies starting august 1, 2024.

Effective August 1, 2024, Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip; and Timor-Leste will be added to the list of countries at high-risk for dog rabies and all commercial dogs arriving to Canada from these countries will no longer be permitted entry. Ensure you do not load or export commercial dogs to Canada from these countries if they will arrive on or after August 1, 2024.

All commercial dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies remain prohibited from entering Canada. This list is reviewed regularly and subject to change.

On this page

Questions to ask, 5 red flags, find out where your dog is really coming from, roles and responsibilities, more tips and tools to help with your dog ownership decision, information for dog breeders importing commercial dogs, information for animal welfare or rescue organizations and sellers importing commercial dogs, additional information.

If you and your family are interested in buying or adopting a dog from Canada or abroad, there are important questions you should ask .

Whether you are working with a breeder, animal welfare or rescue organization, a local shelter run by your municipality or local humane society, there are things to consider .

travel agency to canada

Before you get a dog online, ask the individual or organization you are working with some key questions. If you are getting vague or unclear answers to these questions, that's a red flag.

Cute puppy looking to the left

Where are the dogs from?

Can they provide additional information about where the dog was located before being offered for sale?

Can they provide breeder credentials or certifications and references from previous buyers?

Can they provide credentials or certifications and references from previous owners?

Can they confirm how long the dog has been in which shelter (immediately from the streets or did they complete a quarantine first)?

What paperwork can they provide?

Can they provide the dog's vaccination records and other veterinary medical history?

 • How old is the dog? Requirements are different based on age
 • How old was the dog when it was vaccinated? Dogs cannot be effectively vaccinated against rabies before 12 weeks of age. If they're vaccinated before this improper vaccination guidelines are used and the animal won't be protected
 • Has the dog been vaccinated against DA2PPv? All dogs over 8 weeks of age should be vaccinated against this disease.
 • Has the dog been tested and treated for parasites such as heartworm, intestinal parasites (for example, roundworm and hookworm), etc.
 • Has the dog been inspected by a veterinarian and when?

How will they be transported?

Can they prove that the dogs will be transported safely? Anyone involved in transporting animals into, within, and leaving Canada must meet Canada's Health of Animals Regulations Part XII – Transport of Animals , which defines the conditions for humanely transporting all animals in Canada by all modes of transport.

Can I see or visit where the dogs are being housed?

Do they provide the option to visit the dog? When possible, an in-person visit is recommended to verify the source.

What happens if health issues come up after bringing the dog home?

Do they offer a policy on returns or assistance with medical bills?

 • They offer to meet you someplace neutral or ship the dog instead of letting you pick up and see the premises
 • You can't visit the dog prior to purchase and are not permitted to visit or obtain information about the parents
 • You're asked to send money to another country
 • They don't ask about your experience with dogs or your lifestyle to help match the dog to you
 • They don't provide any documents or veterinary records and offer no health guarantee or return policy in the event that health issues arise

A woman, kneeling down outside, is surrounded by black puppies

Did you see a post of the dog you've been looking for and now you can't stop thinking about it?

We get it, those puppy eyes are hard to resist. But it's important to resist the urge to impulsively purchase a dog online just because it's cute and available now, no questions asked. Too good to be true? Probably. In fact, that could actually be a sign of a puppy mill or of an irresponsible individual or organization.

When buying or adopting a dog online, make sure to do a bit of research about the seller first, and ask questions about the dog's situation.

It's possible for some dogs intended for sale or adoption in Canada to have been imported from abroad and exposed to diseases or parasites before coming to Canada. While Canada has animal health requirements in place to help prevent the introduction of diseases through the importation of commercial dogs, some infected dogs may not appear sick at the time of import or while they are kept in Canada before being sold.

That's why it's important to work with a reputable supplier that you have verified and trust.

Be cautious about importing a dog you have never met or when buying from an online broker or retail site so that you don't unintentionally support puppy mills, find yourself with a sick dog, or worse, face the heartbreak of having to euthanize your new pet.

Dog rabies in other countries

Dog rabies kills 59,000 people every year globally in over 100 countries that are at high-risk for dog rabies . Importing commercial dogs from these countries poses a serious public health risk to Canadians. The importation of even 1 rabid dog could result in transmission to humans, pets, and wildlife. Dog rabies is a fatal disease of the central nervous system and is 99% fatal to animals and humans once they start to show signs or symptoms. That's one of the reasons why it's important to know what country the dogs are coming from before planning to bring them into Canada to prevent the introduction and spread of serious diseases like dog rabies.

Measure prohibiting the entry of commercial dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies

As of September 28, 2022, the entry of commercial dogs into Canada from countries at high-risk for dog rabies is prohibited until further notice. Commercial dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies will not be permitted to enter Canada and import permits will no longer be issued. Commercial dogs include dogs intended for purposes such as being given/transferred to another person, resale, adoption, fostering, breeding, show or exhibition and research.

Notice to industry : New measure prohibiting the entry of commercial dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for regulating the importation of animals, including dogs, into Canada in order to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases that could negatively impact the health of both animals and humans. CFIA veterinarians administer and enforce the humane transport and import requirements at the border, including inspecting import shipments that require a permit. They are available to provide inspection services when requested by the Canadian Border Services Agency.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is responsible for inspecting certain commodities at the border on behalf of the CFIA. If an animal is found to be non-compliant with the CFIA's humane transport and/or import requirements, CBSA may refuse the animal entry or refer it to the CFIA for further inspection.

Provinces and territories are responsible for the protection and humane treatment of animals once imported, including the regulation of certain animals diseases and animal welfare.

Cities and municipalities are responsible for business licensing and by-laws related to animals, including sales of animals and limits on numbers and types of animals that can be kept.

Importers are responsible for ensuring the health of the animals in their care. They must also verify and follow all relevant import requirements before entering or re-entering the country. This includes complying with all federal, provincial/territorial or municipal requirements prior to travelling. Check in advance to avoid surprises and delays.

Whether by land, sea or air, travel to and through the United States and Canada has been enabled by a familiar selection of large stations, ports and airports for quite some time. But how have these famous thoroughfares moved with the times? We’ve compiled a collection of fascinating then-and-now images to reveal their decades-long transformations.

Click through this gallery to see how some of North America’s most important transport hubs have changed over the years…

Originally opened as New York International Airport, JFK was built on the grounds of the former Idlewild Beach Golf Course in Queens, which inspired its local nickname, Idlewild. It was hoped that it would relieve congestion at nearby LaGuardia Airport, and construction began in 1943. Within two years of its 1948 opening, Idlewild was operating around 70 flights per day and by 1957 it was facilitating more than 1,200 departures per week. It’s pictured here in 1957 after the completion of the International Arrivals Building.

Opened just after midnight on 2 February 1913, Grand Central Terminal quickly became the busiest train station in the US. The station as we know it today was almost lost forever in the 1950s and the 1960s, when it was threatened by proposals to build a tower block either in its place or on top of it. Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was instrumental in campaigning to preserve the building and the station was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
Inaugurated in 1916, Quebec City’s main train station was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway at the height of the First World War.
LAX’s humble beginnings belie its modern mega-airport status. From as early as 1925, aviators were leasing the land (then fields of barley, beans and wheat) around where the airport now stands in order to fly their planes. One of these fields, Mines Field, was chosen as the site for Los Angeles’ municipal airport in 1928. The soon-to-be airport hosted the National Air Races later that year, and again in 1933 (pictured). Los Angeles Municipal Airport was officially dedicated in 1930 and within a few years was regarded as a major aircraft center.

Now: Chicago Union Station, Illinois, USA

Between Amtrak passengers and the commuters that use the city’s Metra rail system, nearly 40 million people pass through Union Station each year, with more than 300 trains operating daily. Various restorations and upgrade works have been carried out in recent years to improve accessibility and drainage, and return the Great Hall and its grand staircases to their original splendour. You can see from this recent image that the hall, still filled with shiny wooden benches, looks almost as pristine as it did when freshly built.

Years after the Liberal government promised to put an end to the cruel industry, horses packed into crates continue to be flown from airports in Winnipeg and Edmonton, all the way to Alaska, then on to Japan, without any relief along the way. And if that wasn’t bad enough, a new investigation — a first of its kind from on the ground in Japan — is now revealing that the gruelling travel conditions these animals are forced to endure are even worse than we thought. Advocates are now calling on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to halt these shipments, as travel times routinely exceed legal limits.

Canadian animal law organization Animal Justice, along with Japanese animal protection group Life Investigation Agency, tracked four shipments of horses leaving Edmonton this past May and June, for Kansai and Kitakyushu airports in Japan. Canadian law prohibits transporting horses for over 28 hours without food, water and rest. “Yet official time records kept by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency generally end when the horses touch down in Japan, failing to account for the rest of the horses’ harrowing journey,” says Animal Justice in a statement.

Footage gathered in Japan shows horses being made to suffer through lengthy waits post-flight before being transported to a nearby quarantine facility. Total times from landing to reaching the feedlot ranged from four hours 20 minutes to an excessive 6.5 hours, delaying essential food, water and rest.

Upon further analysis of government records, Animal Justice, with the help of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition, also determined “that all shipments from Winnipeg to Kitakyushu and Kansai airports over the last seven months appear to have gone over the 28-hour limit.”

When the horses do finally arrive in Japan, some were “visibly shaking with fear,” says Ren Yabuki, director of Life Investigation Agency, in the statement. “Horses were sprayed with disinfectant and workers forcefully unloaded them from trucks, yelling at them and banging metal rods.”

Danae Tonge, an organizer with Manitoba Animal Save, has witnessed first-hand horses being loaded up for export at Winnipeg’s Richardson International Airport.

“It’s horrifying,” she says, now knowing what awaits them when they land.

She says the process of getting horses off trucks, into crates and onto planes in Winnipeg takes a long time, hours, before they even take off.

“I’ve documented times when the horses arrive (at the airport) around 10 o’clock at night, then are unloaded, crated and then the flight doesn’t leave until five o’clock in the morning,” she says. “It’s shocking to now know how much worse it is, how much longer the journey is, and that every Winnipeg shipment is essentially breaking the law,” she says.

“It’s heartbreaking,” echoes Kaitlyn Mitchell, a lawyer with Animal Justice, who has joined Tonge in the past to document horses at the airport. “The vast majority of Winnipeggers and Canadians of all political stripes want to see this horrific practice end now,” she adds. “Any delay on the part of the CFIA will enable this industry to continue violating the law with impunity, and doom even more horses to suffer.”

Ater years of waiting on the Liberal government to fulfil its election promise to end the export of live horses for slaughter, advocates are now turning to the CFIA.

“We are urging the CFIA to look into this troubling situation and halt all horse exports for slaughter until the industry can guarantee that the shipments will comply with Canadian animal transport laws,” says Animal Justice.

While Bill C-355, an act to ban exporting horses by air for slaughter, currently sits before the Senate, it won’t be revisited until the fall as the Senate is now in recess. In the meantime, horses continue to be exported.

In an email to the Manitoba Co-operator , the CFIA reportedly states it is reviewing information provided by Animal Justice “and any followup activities will be in accordance with the agency’s compliance and enforcement policy.”

For advocates, this isn’t enough. More shipments of horses are expected over the summer.

“We need this to end,” says Mitchell.

“Now.”

Jessica Scott-Reid is a Winnipeg journalist and animal advocate. She is also on the board of directors of the Winnipeg Humane Society.
