From Cairo to Luxor: 6 Best Ways to Get There

Home to some of the country's most famous sights including the colorful tombs of the Valley of The Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the colossal Temples of Karnak, Luxor is top of most people's hit list when it comes to Egypt travel itineraries.

It's no surprise then that many visitors head straight to this world-famous historic site, once the power-center of the Middle Kingdom pharaohs, after their time spent exploring Cairo .

Fortunately several options for getting from Cairo to Luxor are available for travelers.

On This Page:

From cairo to luxor by train, from cairo to luxor by sleeper train, from cairo to luxor by nile cruise, from cairo to luxor by airplane, from cairo to luxor by flight day tour, from cairo to luxor by bus.

Medinat Habu Temple on Luxor's west bank

Several trains run daily between Cairo's Ramses Train Station and Luxor Railway Station from 8am to 11pm. If you're staying at a hotel in Giza, you can also board all the same services to Luxor at Giza Railway Station.

There are two train types: The "Special" class trains (five services daily) have newer rolling stock and more comfortable carriages.

The "Spanish" class trains (four services daily) are cheaper and older.

All trains offer a drink and food trolley service that rattles through the carriages intermittently throughout the journey, but it's a good idea to bring along snacks and a picnic meal.

The first class carriages in both come with roomier seats and better bathroom facilities, so are well worth shelling out for. First class tickets range from 151EGP (US$9.60) to 255EGP (US$16.30) depending on the train.

Travel time between Cairo and Luxor is supposed to be around 10.5 hours but is more typically around 12.

You definitely want to try and bag a window seat, as one of the great joys of train travel along this route is watching the lush Nile-side countryside of green fields and date palms passing by. Take one of the two morning trains to make the most of the view.

If you're planning to travel on one of the overnight services, note that both types of trains are seater only. There are no sleeper carriages.

This is the most popular method of public transport to Luxor for Egyptians, as well as foreign visitors, so try to book train tickets at least a few days in advance.

The major downside of train travel along this route is that unfortunately, some staff at both Ramses Train Station and Luxor Railway Station will attempt to refuse foreign travelers tickets on these trains and will tell you that you are only allowed to use the (much more expensive) sleeper service. This dates from a previous official travel restriction, which has since been revoked by the government.

If you are having trouble booking a train ticket, most hotels can send someone to the station to do it for you for a small fee. You can also now book online tickets on the Egyptian National Railways website .

Row of ancient sculptures of criosphinx in Karnak Temple, Luxor

The Watania Sleeper Train is a slice of old-fashioned rail travel .

It departs every evening from Ramses Train Station in Cairo at 7.45pm (and 20 minutes later at Giza Station) and travels overnight to arrive in Luxor at 6.15am.

Tickets can be purchased from the Watania Sleeper Train office at Ramses Train Station, or you can book online .

It's best to book a few days in advance. It costs US$84 for a bed in a two-bed cabin or, if you're a solo traveler and don't want to share a compartment, US$126 for a single cabin. There is also a seater-only carriage with good-sized seats that can recline. A seater-only ticket costs US$42.

All tickets can only be booked using credit cards, US dollars or Euro. The ticket price includes both dinner (with a choice of chicken, beef, fish, or vegetarian) and breakfast.

The sleeper compartments are compact but tidy with a small washbasin and bunks that fold out from the wall. Bedding is provided, and the included meals are brought to you in-room.

Although tickets are rather expensive for the facilities provided, nothing can beat falling asleep on your bunk to the steady sway of the train tracks and waking up in the morning to the green fields of the Nile.

Nile cruisers docked in front of Luxor Temple

The most luxurious way to travel from Cairo to Luxor is by Nile Cruiser.

Harking back to the early days of Egypt tourism, when European travelers first explored the country by boat, this slow cruise up the Nile River usually takes 12 days (including sightseeing days in both Cairo and Luxor while onboard).

This is a no-hassle and stylish sightseeing and transport all-in-one , stopping at all the important historic sites, such as Tell El Amarna and Abydos , along the way.

Only a few of the bigger Nile cruise operators, such as Mövenpick, operate this route, with sailings departing from Cairo once a month from February to June and September to November.

Prices, which include all meals and sightseeing tours as well as a range of on-board evening events, start from around US$700.

Hot air ballooning over Luxor's west bank

Egypt Air flies four times daily direct to Luxor International Airport from Cairo International Airport.

Flights take one hour, and ticket prices start at around US$145 in the high season from December to February. If you're traveling in low season, flight prices usually drop to around US$75.

Luxor flights depart from Cairo Airport's Terminal Three.

In minimal traffic conditions (before 7am and late at night) a taxi to Cairo Airport from the central city only takes around 30 minutes. At any other time of day, make sure to add in an hour for taxi transport time.

Luxor Airport is seven kilometers from central Luxor. There is no public transport into the center, so you need to either use one of the airport taxis or book a private transfer with your Luxor hotel.

Tomb interior in the Valley of the Kings

If you really have very little time up your sleeve, it is possible to take a day tour to Luxor from Cairo by flying there and back in one day.

If you want to do this, prepare for a very long day of between 12 and 15 hours door to door, and an early start. Most tours pick up from your Cairo hotel between 4am and 5am, and the return time to Cairo is around 7pm.

Also realize there is only so much you will be able to see of Luxor with just one day, so your sightseeing will be limited to the big-hitter sites: usually the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and maybe Medinat Habu Temple on Luxor's west bank and Karnak Temple and/or Luxor Temple on the east bank.

These tours normally include a private driver, who transfers you to and from the airport in Cairo, and a professional Egyptologist guide and driver in Luxor, who accompanies you from Luxor Airport for the day.

The Private Day Tour of Luxor by Air offers a solid itinerary for this style of tour. The tour includes pickup and drop-off from your Cairo hotel to Cairo Airport, return flight costs to Luxor, the services of an Egyptologist guide and driver for the entire time you're in Luxor, and lunch. The tour visits the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut Temple for guided tours and includes a stop at the Statues of Memnon on the west bank, and guided tours of both Karnak and Luxor Temples on the east bank.

Hatshepsut Temple on Luxor's west bank

Several bus companies run bus services between Cairo and Luxor.

The vast amount of services are overnight. Go Bus, Super Jet, and Upper Egypt Travel are the main companies operating this route.

Go Bus departs Cairo from their conveniently located office, just off Tahrir Square in the central city. Super Jet and Upper Egypt Travel buses leave from Cairo Gateway Bus Station, also in the central city.

All the bus companies arrive in Luxor at their individual offices, which are handily located in Luxor center, near the train station. Travel time is around 11 hours, and tickets cost between 195 EGP (US$12.45) and 430 EGP (US$27.45).

Buses stop every three hours or so for breaks at rather ramshackle highway service stations with bathrooms and restaurants. It's a good idea to bring plenty of snacks, though.

Note that even if you take a day service, you won't get many views on this route, as buses take the desert highway rather than following the Nile.

Actually, every day of a Nile cruise includes a major site, or two (or three!).

In fact, one travel expert in the region said this of the Nile cruises from Cairo, “The sites of the reopened section are smaller, quieter and more personalized and would be otherwise almost impossible to reach.

They include Tuna el-Gebel (the necropolis of the city of Hermopolis, sacred to Hermes), the former capital Tel el Amarna (built by pharaoh Akhenaten), Beni Hassan, Abydos and Denderah…As well as being chock-full of factual detail [cruise] tours thankfully allowed for time to absorb the sites and scenes.”

And because most Nile cruises from Cairo include at least one onboard expert (whether an Egyptologist, archaeologist, historian, and so on) offering lectures and guided tours, your experience is much richer. Additionally, even larger vessels contain relatively small groups, ensuring flexibility and far more attention from the crew and the staff.

THE SENSORY APPEAL OF NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

nile cruises from cairo to luxor

Yet, there is also much to be said about the experience of sailing up the famed river and experiencing the landscape in such a direct way. It is really only Nile cruises from Cairo that allow you to hear the sounds of farmers singing to their cattle, kids splashing around at the shore, and the magical tunes of songbirds all along the journey. Wake before sunrise to see the whole world change or dazzle at the twinkling stars overhead as you dine or lounge on the upper deck of your ship.

Naturally, it is the sites you visit that make the cruise such a must for those who want to get the very most out of a visit to Egypt. Most of the cruises are meant to take you from or to Cairo and will be at least ten days or more. Some head downriver from Aswan and all of the way to Cairo, while some take a reverse route and head upriver from Cairo and to Luxor and Aswan. For those who wish to see Abu Simbel and the many Nubian sites preserved along the shores of Lake Nasser, a cruise can be added to the journey before or after the Nile cruise ends.

The long cruise to or from Cairo does include those lesser-known but essential sites that are such significant areas from the Ancient Egyptian past. If you begin at Cairo, your journey is likely to include a day or two of guided touring around the city. This will mean a visit to the Giza Plateau and such appealing spots in Cairo as the Egyptian Museum, the Khan el Khalili marketplace, and more. Once on board and sailing, a visit is likely to feature stops at:

  • Beni Suef  – The base from which you can pay a visit to the stunning pyramids at Maydoum and Dahshur. This includes the Red and Black pyramids, the oldest structures using the pyramid form.
  • Minya  – Close to Tuna el-Gebel, the boundary of Akhenaten’s famed city and the border area between Upper and Lower Egypt at Ashmunein. The tombs of the pharaoh and other royals are in this area, as well.
  • Tell el Amarna  – The actual capital during Akhenaten’s rule. He removed it from Luxor and established his unique period of worshipping a single god – the Aten – from here. Upon his death, it was abandoned and even partially destroyed. Yet tombs and some outlining structures of the great city remain.
  • Abydos  – The oldest city of Ancient Egypt is here and some of the art is still stunning to behold. Sites such as Sohag and El Balyana are also nearby and often featured in a day trip to the area.
  • Quena  – This is a not-to-be missed stop on Nile cruises from Cairo as it is home to the amazing Dendara Temple. Completed late in the Pharaonic era, it is thought to be one of the finest and most well-preserved temples remaining. It is also home to the much-debated relief known as the Dendara Light.

After that, you reach Luxor and spend days exploring sites such as the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and Deir el Bahri. There are also the East and West Banks of the river with its own array of famous temples (including the Karnak and Luxor temple complexes) and so much more. This area is also home to sites like the temples at Edfu and the dual temple of Kom Ombo. If heading to Aswan, sites such as Philae, the High Dam and so much more await.

Ranging in length from ten days to two weeks (or more), Nile cruises from Cairo encapsulate the magic that most envision the moment the words “Nile cruise” are spoken.

THE OPTIONS FOR NILE CRUISES FROM CAIRO

Unlike cruises from Luxor and southward towards Aswan, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are on the more modern, luxury cruisers. Felucca and dahabiyah journeys don’t usually appear among the options, yet this does not mean a five-star journey is unavailable. In fact, most of the Nile cruises from Cairo are like premium hotels with fine food, beautiful accommodations, attentive service, and even options for spa or salon services, evening parties and events, entertainment and more.

Additionally, many Nile cruises from Cairo are all-inclusive, meaning that ground transport, entrance fees, and all but your pre-arrival and post-departure costs are included in your booking.

Setting sail to or from Cairo is a treat as it is one of the few ways to reach, enjoy and explore some of the most astonishing sites in Egyptian history. The first pyramids, the oldest cities and the most dazzling sights await you, making it an ideal time to book your Nile cruise from Cairo right away.

Both sites will amaze you, but one will both amaze you and astonish you. Rather than just being one ancient temple, the Karnak complex is essentially the ruins of a sprawling ancient temple city. Construction was ongoing for more than 2,000 years, and the site covers thousands of square meters. It really is a sight to behold.

After your sightseeing tour, you will return to your cruise liner for lunch, and then it will be time for you to disembark. One of our tour managers will be standing by to meet and greet you, and they will then escort you to Luxor Airport where you will be boarding a flight back to Cairo.

Today, your cruise arrives in Sohag, historically a vital center for Coptic Christianity. Here, you’ll venture to the sacred Abydos Temple, renowned for its intricate inscriptions and significant spiritual history. Explore this ancient sanctuary and uncover the mysteries that have captivated scholars for centuries. Spend the night in Sohag, enveloped by the echoes of ancient worship.

Set sail southward to Qena, a city famed for its proximity to the enchanting Dendara ruins. As you absorb the historical significance of this area, celebrate the evening with lively contests and parties on board, adding a modern twist to the ancient landscapes. Overnight in Qena, under the stars that have watched over Egypt for millennia.

This morning, visit the beautifully preserved Dandara Temple, dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and joy. Marvel at its well-preserved architecture and vibrant ceiling. Continue your journey to Luxor, where the evening sparkles with a cultural showcase—a belly dance show offering a glimpse into traditional Egyptian dance. Overnight in Luxor, preparing for another day of discovery.

Explore the iconic West Bank of Luxor, starting with the Valley of Kings, where pharaohs of the New Kingdom were buried beneath the desert in elaborate tombs. Visit the imposing Hatshepsut Temple, carved directly out of the rock face. The stories of these ancient rulers’ power and ingenuity will captivate your imagination as you spend another night in this historic city.

Begin your day on the East Bank of Luxor at the awe-inspiring Karnak Temple Complex, where you’ll wander among a vast network of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. Marvel at the sheer size and intricate artistry of the constructions that testify to the ambitions of Pharaohs over several dynasties. Next, visit the majestic Luxor Temple, known for its grand statues and towering columns that light up beautifully in the evening sky. After a day steeped in ancient history, drive to Luxor Airport for your flight back to Cairo. Upon arrival, enjoy the evening at your leisure, perhaps exploring more of Cairo’s vibrant nightlife or simply relaxing at your hotel.

Spend your final day in Egypt exploring the historic area known as Old Cairo, a place that encapsulates the confluence of civilizations that have influenced this great city. Begin with a visit to the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of Cairo’s oldest Jewish synagogues, followed by the serene and architecturally fascinating Hanging Church. Continue to the Coptic Museum, which offers a deep dive into the history and culture of Christian Egyptians through its vast collection of Coptic artifacts. Also, explore Abu Serga Church, one of Cairo’s oldest Coptic churches, and the legendary Saladin Citadel, a medieval Islamic fortification that stands as a testament to the historical military might of Cairo. Conclude your journey with a delicious Chinese lunch, a perfect ending to your exploration of Cairo’s diverse cultural heritage before preparing for your departure home.

How to Get from Cairo to Luxor

There are a number of ways of getting to Luxor from Cairo including flights, buses, taxis, and even a Nile River cruise. The distance between these two cities is nearly 660 kilometers (410 miles) and the duration of your journey will depend on which mode of transportation you opt for. Though road-tripping or boarding a train are common options, they are time-consuming, so flying is the quickest route. However, if there are cities along Central Egypt you’d like to see, read on to find out which option effectively works for you.

Best Way to Get from Cairo to Luxor: Join a Tour

Luxor aswan nile river

Joining one of our organized tours not only cuts your planning and prep time, but also saves you the hassle of booking several separate excursions. On our 7 Day Cairo, Aswan and Luxor Package , you will take a luxurious train ride to Luxor from Cairo and stop at unforgettable attractions along the way. See Giza’s pyramids and Aswan’s incredible sites before reaching Luxor. Alternatively, our Luxor and Cairo 2 Day Tour will first show you Luxor’s many attractions and then transport you to Cairo. Adding this tour to the end of your Egypt vacation works best if your homebound flights depart from Cairo.

How to Get from Cairo to Luxor by Bus

Busing to Luxor from Cairo is a nice option for those wanting to save money, but be aware that the ride will take you about 9-10 hours. While buses run daily – both inter-city and direct shuttles – and are relatively cheap, (starting at $15), Egypt’s busy and unpredictable roads should be taken into account.

How to Get from Cairo to Luxor by Train

Another budget-friendly – and more comfortable – option is taking the train to Luxor. Though the journey is roughly 9 hours from Cairo, you’re guaranteed a more efficient route as you won’t be stuck on the busy roads. You’ll also admire great landscape views and the Nile River along the way. Trains function under the Egyptian National Railways and depart from Cairo’s Ramses Station, arriving in Luxor Railway Station in less than 10 hours. Overnight sleeper cars are available for a more comfortable transfer.

How to Get from Cairo to Luxor by Car

Taxis and car rentals are definitely available in Cairo, but the trip can present many unforeseen complications. Be wary of hectic traffic and congested roads. Also note that road rules and driving culture in general will be very different than what you’re used to. Take precautions, expect lots of delays, as well as bumper-to-bumper traffic. Familiarizing yourself with local road laws – both written and unwritten – are a safe bet. Check out our full guide to keeping safe in Egypt for more tips.

How to Get from Cairo to Luxor by Air

Flights are the fastest way to reach Luxor and can save you loads of time, however might be pricey. You can directly fly from Cairo International Airport with many airlines, including the country’s most popular, EgyptAir. Your flight will take just about an hour, but can cost you several hundred dollars. Some tourists opt for flying to Aswan from Cairo and sailing down the Nile to Luxor after.

How to Get from Cairo to Luxor by Cruise

A unique way to get to Luxor is via Nile River cruise, which offers you a relaxing, slow-paced, and scenic mode of travel. Most people fly to Aswan from Cairo, do some sightseeing, and catch a cruise to Luxor shortly after. The total amount of time averages to 3 days, depending on the cruise’s schedule. Sailing down the Nile directly from Cairo is available as well, but only if you book privately, which is costly and can take up to a week or longer to reach your destination.

So What’s the Best Way to Get from Cairo to Luxor?

From the many choices offered – buses, trains, planes, and Nile River cruise – the best option from Cairo to Luxor is via organized tour . This ends up saving you time and money in the long-run as all the planning and hassle is done by our team of experts. Flights are costly, buses take an exceptional amount of time, and while the cruise is enjoyable, the transfer in Aswan can be exhausting. You’ll want to see all there is to see in Luxor and enjoy a day tour of its ancient wonders. With us, you’ll experience the best service, explore brilliant destinations, and leave with unforgettable memories.

How to Travel from Cairo to Luxor: Flight, Train, Boat...

After Cairo, Luxor will likely top your list to visit during your time in Egypt, as it is home to some of the most impressive temples in the entire country (the world-famous Karnak complex as well as the Luxor Temple), but it is also where you likely will start your exploration into the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens.

From Cairo, Luxor is approximately 671 km (419 miles) away, and is also on the Nile river making it possible to do the trip either by train, by boat, or by airplane.

  • 2. Cairo to Luxor by Train
  • 3. Cairo to Luxor by Boat

Traveling from Cairo to Luxor by Airplane (the recommended and easiest way)

  • Price: 75–100 US dollars
  • Duration: 1 hour flight, but 4–5 hours total (with transfer to airport, waiting at airport, etc)

Your easiest way to get from Cairo to Luxor would be a domestic flight . These cost around 70 to 100 US dollars for one way, depending on the time of year that you are booking for and how long in advance you book. The flight takes a total of about an hour, with most flights run by Egypt's national carrier, Egyptair.

Even taking into consideration that you would have to get to the airport, be there about 2 hours in advance, check-in your suitcases, and collect your luggage at the end, a domestic flight is still the most time-effective way to get from Cairo to Luxor, taking around 4–5 hours in total, and on top of that, it is the easiest way to travel, hence our recommendation. Booking a few months in advance can also take the price down to the lower end of the range , matching the price for a train ticket as listed below.

There are multiple flights a day (running as early as 6am and as late as 11pm ), so you can pick a time that works best for you. If you're on a tight schedule, an early or late flight will mean that your flight time avoids eating too much into your sightseeing time.

See our handpicked itineraries including Cairo for various durations: 5 days , 7 days , 10 days , 12 days , 14 days and 21 days ...

Traveling by Overnight Train from Cairo to Luxor (the cheapest way)

  • Price: 80–120 US dollars for a sleeper, 8–10 US dollars for a seat
  • Duration: around 10 hours

The overnight train from Cairo to Luxor from the Wataniya Sleeping Trains company is a good option if you are looking to save money, since it saves you a night in a hotel, making it overall the most cost-effective way to get from Cairo to Luxor. We recommend booking these tickets a few days in advance at least to secure a spot , and you can buy tickets online or at Ramses Train Station in Cairo, where the train departs from.

There are also some extremely cheap tickets for seats on trains between the two cities (8–10 US dollars), but we do not recommend these as the journey is a bit too long to sit . However, the option is there if you're traveling on a tight budget, or if you're unable to get a sleeper train ticket.

Most visitors opt to book in advance and pay around 80–120 US dollars (80 US dollars for a cabin containing two beds, and 120 US dollars for a private cabin) to be more comfortable and get some sleep in a sleeper berth so that they have the energy to explore Luxor the next morning.

There are a couple of sleeper trains depending on the day that you're looking to travel. One usually departs at 7.45pm and arrives at Luxor around 6am the next morning, and the second sleeper train departs at 9.10pm from Cairo and arrives in Luxor at around 8am . If you're happy to have a seat rather than a bed, there are many more departure times for trains leaving Cairo throughout the day.

Traveling from Cairo to Luxor by Boat (the most picturesque way)

  • Price: 2,000–5,000 US dollars
  • Duration: 11–12 days

If you've got the time, you could travel from Cairo to Luxor by boat and see a lot of incredible things along the way. There are a huge variety of trips out there, so the prices do vary a lot depending on how luxurious you would like your boat to be, how many activities you'd like to do on the way, and what your preferences for food are. Do also keep in mind that these prices include accommodation, food, and entrance tickets to sights for the duration of the journey, hence they are a lot higher than other modes of transport.

The cruises generally take approximately 11 to 12 days, which usually includes a few days in Cairo to explore, a trip to Tuna el Gebel, Beni Hassan, Asyut (home to the Tomb of Meryre and Pentu as well as Akhenaten), Abydos Temple, and a tour through Luxor for a few days at the end too.

For more information about the Nile Cruise, read on: How to Plan a Nile Cruise in Egypt?

Not Recommended: Driving from Cairo to Luxor by Car or Taking a Bus

The journey from Cairo to Luxor by car would take approximately 8 hours , so this is also technically an option if you like driving and would prefer to rent a car to do so. We don't recommend this as your best option , because the roads are long, dark, often lacking in signs, and there is little to see on the way, nor much in the way of facilities such as gas stations or other road services should something go wrong with the car.

Driving in Egypt is also not going to be same as driving in Europe or in North America, with little adherence to traffic rules throughout the country but especially on empty highways and at night . Other cars often do not have their headlights on . While this method is not recommended, we did want to list the option in case anybody was thinking about it.

There are also buses driving the route between Cairo and Luxor overnight. While the drivers of these buses are likely more used to the conditions of driving in Egypt than a tourist would be, we still do not recommend taking these buses if it can be avoided . Taking the train is a safer, more comfortable, and quicker option, and is much less prone to traffic jams too! Those on a budget can opt for a seat instead of a bed on the train for an affordable journey.
