Suggested College Tour Itineraries
Here are some suggestions for schools to visit, grouped by region, to get you rolling. Each list includes 5-6 schools that offer a range of sizes, settings and selectivity to help imagine the possibilities. We also suggest others worth considering and why.
Cities currently covered include Boston, New York City, Syracuse, Washington DC, Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Click on the Continue Reading link below to see our suggestions, or try our College Tour Planner to build your own custom campus tour itinerary.
Suggested starting point
- Boston College
- Northeastern
- Boston University
These popular Boston area schools represent a good mix of size, setting and admissions selectivity. All are easily accessed via public transportation, and given their relative proximity you can squeeze in two campus visits a day if necessary.
For a taste of smaller schools in more rural locations, consider driving to western Massachusetts to visit Amherst , Williams , Hampshire College , Smith or UMass Amherst . If you're interested in engineering, check out Olin , UMass Lowell and WPI , and if you're interested in entrepreneurship visit Babson .
- Sarah Lawrence
Though we've contained the list to schools in NYC, it's easy to venture out into upstate NY, Connecticut, New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania if you're game. If you're interested in visiting Ivy League schools, both Yale and Princeton are within relatively easy reach by car, bus or train. Cornell is four hours away, but if you head up that way you can also visit Colgate and Hamilton to give you a taste of small, medium and large schools in rural settings.
- Syracuse University
- Ithaca College
- Hobart and William Smith
The schools on this list offer a great mix of size, setting and selectivity. If environmental science and forestry are your thing, check out SUNY ESF , and if you have time to venture to Rochester, check out the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology .
Washington DC
- American University
- George Washington
- Johns Hopkins
- University of Richmond
- University of Virginia
The schools on this list are medium to large schools in suburban and urban settings. Time permitting, consider also checking out William & Mary , Virginia Tech and Washington and Lee .
- University of Chicago
- Northwestern
- University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
- University of Wisconsin
These schools are all classic medium-large universities. For a smaller school experience, check out the Colleges that Change Lives in the area, such as Knox , Beloit , Wheaton , Wabash , Kalamazoo and Cornell College .
- Case Western
- Carnegie Mellon
- University of Michigan
These schools provide a broad mix of sizes and settings. Kenyon and Oberlin exude a small school, small town feel, Ohio state and Michigan a classic Big Ten college town feel, and Case Western and Carnegie Mellon a more urban feel.
San Francisco
- UC Berkeley
- UC Santa Cruz
- University of San Francisco
- Santa Clara University
Most of the San Francisco Bay area schools tend to be larger in size, but offer great variety in terms of locale/setting. Three popular University of California campuses are within two hours: the more rural, bicycle-friendly Davis, the urban, progressive Berkeley, and the earthy-crunchy Santa Cruz.
Los Angeles
- Claremont Colleges
- UC San Diego
These popular Southern California schools offer a good mix of size, setting and selectivity. You'll need a car to see them all, but in certain situations it's still very possible to squeeze in two campus visits a day. The Claremont Colleges— Pomona , Claremont McKenna , Pitzer , Harvey Mudd and Scripps —are particularly interesting to visit because of their setup as a consortium with distinct campuses but shared classes.
If you're interested in STEM fields, be sure to check out Caltech and Harvey Mudd. If film or animation are your thing, check out Chapman University , Cal Arts and Loyola Marymount in addition to USC and UCLA.

We take a red-eye into NYC and our first tour is at 11am at NYU, followed by our walk around of Parsons. Columbia tour is at 4pm. Pratt is the following morning.
Any recommendations on what area to stay in? We will be exhausted on Thursday afternoon. I’ve stayed near Times Square before but the distance from Columbia looks pretty far (if we walk). Is it better to take the subway or bus to the Times Square area? Bus from NYU to Columbia or subway?
We know we’ll take a subway to Pratt. Friday plan is to see Pratt and then sightsee with my husband since he has never been to NYC (we’ll stick to near Times Square then).
Any help is appreciated!
I'm seeing several locations for Pratt. Which one?
Upper West Side isn't close to the first two places you're seeing, and depending where it might not be that close to Columbia.
Take the subway
You're likely here during the UN General Assembly which impacts hotel prices
No reason to stay near Times Square - especially if the prospective student wants a feel of living here
Which airport? Being able to conveniently drop off your luggage at your hotel is a factor
If you give us the exact dates and budget we can provide better help. Also, are you okay with one room, two beds?
You're going to be pressed for time to get up to Columbia before 4 pm -- after first having a formal tour of NYU (which I'm assuming includes a Q&A session you won't want to skip) at NYU, followed by lunch and a walk around Parsons. So the subway is definitely the way to get up there.

Here's a Google map showing the distances between the hotel, NYU's main entrance (don't know where your tour leaves from) & Parsons:

Another GoogleMap showing the subway route from Parsons to Columbia:

Here's what GoogleMaps came up with for getting from the Washington Square Hotel to Pratt's main campus in Brooklyn (if that's where you will be headed.).
https://goo.gl/maps/skfconxAS3ysA62a8
I think I’d push off Parsons till the next day, if you’re taking the red eye you might want to take a nap before going up to Columbia. Columbia’s an easy ride on the 1 train, just be sure you take the 1 and not the 2 or 3.

‘A Different World’ Hits the Road to Help Historically Black Colleges
The beloved series was set at a fictional historically Black university. Now, cast members have reunited to visit and support real-life schools.
- Share full article
By Leigh-Ann Jackson
Picture a pampered socialite ostentatiously putting her generational wealth on display. Or an outspoken teenage activist leading a climate change protest. Or a charismatic opportunist luring people into his latest scam.
These descriptions apply equally to characters from “A Different World” — a sitcom that ran from 1987 to 1993 — and to today’s social media influencers. So it’s little wonder that the show, which streams on Amazon and Max, resonates with Gen Z.
The series began as a spinoff of “The Cosby Show” centered on Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), and it became a hit in its own right .
“A Different World” broke ground by giving high visibility to an ensemble of aspirational Black young adults, following an eclectic cross-section of coeds attending Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university. There they dealt with typical collegiate growing pains — studying, partying, falling in love and stumbling into adulthood — and also with more serious subject matter, including racism, domestic abuse, gun violence, homelessness and mental health struggles.
“These things mattered, and these are issues which are still relevant today,” said Darryl M. Bell, who played the Hillman huckster Ron Johnson.
Now, more than three decades after the series finale, Bell and other core cast members, including Charnele Brown, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer and Glynn Turman, have reunited for a campus tour of historically Black colleges and universities . Their mission is to raise awareness and enrollment for such institutions, to establish a “Different World” scholarship fund and, of course, to give newer, younger fans a chance to see their parents’ hand-me-down TV idols in person.
“The kids can watch it on their phones,” said Hardison, who played Dwayne Wayne, a gawky math whiz turned professor. “They can really tap in anywhere — that has given us a whole different life with it.” The show premiered 37 years ago, he noted, “so to think that it’s still doing good work is a bit of a dream.”
Bell said, “There’s nothing new under the sun: Everything has its cycle, and it comes back and you find it’s new again.” (That sentiment certainly holds true for many of the show’s wardrobe staples, like oversize blazers, baggy denim overalls and bomber jackets, all of which are back in style.)
The spark for the tour came in 2016, when several cast members made an appearance at Norfolk State University in Virginia. In the years that followed, Bell courted potential backers to fund a full-fledged college tour. (Guy, who played Whitley Gilbert, the show’s resident diva, playfully calls Bell the “office manager” of the group.)
Getting the stars on board was relatively easy. “This is family,” Summer said. “The majority of us hang out on purpose .” Teaming up with Cisco and Wells Fargo, and the nonprofits Student Freedom Initiative and Minds Matter , Bell lined up six tour stops this year at schools like Spelman College in Atlanta, Howard University in Washington, D.C., and, later this fall in Alabama, Tuskegee University and Alabama State University; he hopes to schedule 10 more visits in 2025. The events are free for students, faculty and alumni, and Bell said the group is considering opening some events to the public because of demand.
Jaden Jackson, a senior at Tuskegee, has seen every episode of “A Different World” and recently started rewatching them, inspired by the tour announcement. “It’s a classic,” she said. “It’s a show I’ll never get tired of.”
“When people think of H.B.C.U.s, they already have a picture of the type of people who go there,” she said. “But it’s such a diverse group of people, and the show does a good job of encapsulating that.” She has a particular affinity for Summer’s free-spirited character, Freddie: “To see someone like me onscreen — who acted like me, who I would often be compared to — that really appealed to me and made me excited to go to my H.B.C.U.”
The tour kicked off in Atlanta on Feb. 29, with cast members giving talks at Spelman, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College. Instagram posts from the events show crowds giving standing ovations, snapping cellphone photos and, at Clark Atlanta, greeting the cast with a marching band performance.
“The Spelman panel that we did at Sisters Chapel was off the chain,” Guy said. “I was shocked at their excitement, their verve and their vigor. I kept looking at everybody like, ‘Yo! They are treating us like rock stars or something. What is going on here?’”
Hardison likened the reception to an experience he had while accompanying his friend Lenny Kravitz on a concert tour of Japan in the late 1990s. “It took me back to when he went out onstage and the Japanese kids were screaming,” he said.
The Spelman chapel, which holds 1,000, was at capacity during the event, according to a spokeswoman. Helene D. Gayle, the president of Spelman, moderated a talk with the actors and a Q. and A. session afterward.
“When I first took on the role of president of Spelman, people would ask me, ‘What’s it like? How do you feel?’” Gayle said in an interview. “And I’d say, ‘Well, I feel like I am on the set of “A Different World” every day.’”
She said many of the students had heard of the show from older relatives and had watched it on streaming platforms. Adrian Crick, a Spelman freshman, said audience members were well versed in Hillman lore. One student serenaded the cast with her own version of the theme song.
“I hadn’t watched the show, but my mom said it’s an important cultural touchstone for Black people,” Crick said. “The level of production that Spelman, Morehouse and Clark put on for them indicated to me this is something to pay attention to, this is kind of historic .”
When the tour visited Howard last week, the campus was abuzz with “Hillman at Howard Day” activities, including step performances by fraternities and sororities and a fashion show in which students dressed as their favorite characters. (There were, of course, multiple pairs of flip-top sunglasses, Dwayne Wayne’s signature accessory.)
An estimated 1,400 attendees were at the main event at the school’s Cramton Auditorium, with many screaming and waving cardboard cutouts of the characters as the actors took the stage. Kim Coles, a star of “Living Single,” moderated a panel that included appearances by Karen Malina White, who appeared in the final season of “A Different World” (and was Miss Howard 1985), and by the “Cosby Show” actress Tempestt Bledsoe, who is Bell’s partner.
Sinbad chimed in via video and so did Debbie Allen, a Howard alumna who overhauled the series in its second season. Allen told the audience that “A Different World” mirrored her own college experiences and described the show as a vital voice for young Black America.
While the cast members were in Washington, they visited the White House to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and appear in a video promoting the Biden administration’s student loan debt relief efforts .
Summer, who grew up in Canada, was unfamiliar with predominantly Black campuses before joining the cast at 18. She said getting the Hillman experience was the next best thing and now considers herself a champion of the schools.
“There’s a reason we’re on tour right now,” she said, noting that it was imperative to remind people that an H.B.C.U. “is an incredible place to get an education and an incredible place to secure and dive deeper into our culture.”
Gayle, the Spelman president, said that the Supreme Court’s 2023 affirmative action decision , which barred race-conscious college admissions policies, had made H.B.C.U.s even more indispensable.
“We’re at this moment where I think what we provide young people is perhaps more important than ever,” she said. “I hope that the tour can be part of that, as well — showing young Black people and their communities how important it is to be grounded in institutions that value them, that reflect who they are and reflect the excellence that is resonant within the African American community.”

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says it is 'determining next steps'
From CNN's Jillian Sykes

"MIT officials are aware of the tents, and are determining next steps with a focus on ensuring campus is physically safe and fully functioning. MIT Police were on scene throughout the night and will continue to be present."
Robert Kraft says he is willing to support The Kraft Center at the university
From CNN's Chandelis Duster
Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots and backer of Columbia University, on Monday said he is still willing to support The Kraft Center at the school that supports Jewish students, calling it “a haven of safety.”
Kraft, an alumnus of the university, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” that he loves the school and “we have to have accountability.”
“There are both professors and students within the university who say things that I think cross the line and there should be accountability. I believe in free speech. Say whatever you want but pay the consequences. And don't have your face covered. I don't think that should be allowed,” he said.
“I can’t believe in New York City at Columbia University Jewish students are afraid to go to classes in the United States of America in 2024. It’s amazing to me and horrible,” Kraft also said.
Asked where he drew the line at Columbia University regarding both pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protests and what he finds objectionable, he said “there is a lack of education on the situation” happening in the Middle East.
“I’m concerned about America and what’s going on in this country. And to keep it open and free for all people of all backgrounds to do as they wish,” he said.
Asked if he has confidence in Columbia University’s president, Minouche Shafik, he said he thinks she is “very well intentioned” and said “we have to look at what goes on with faculty.”
Columbia faculty stage walk-out in solidarity with students
From CNN's John Towfighi
Hundreds of people gathered on Low Plaza Monday afternoon as Columbia University faculty delivered speeches in support of the student protesters who were suspended and arrested Thursday.
Faculty who spoke denounced university president Minouche Shafik’s decision to authorize the New York Police Department to remove protesters from campus and demanded all legal and disciplinary charges be dismissed and expunged from students' records.
Faculty held signs that read, “Hands off our students,” and “End student suspensions now.” Some faculty donned their academic regalia and wore sashes that read, “We support students.”
Speeches were met with cheers and claps from the crowd, as well as chants for Shafik to resign.
Christopher Brown, a professor of history, said, “I’m here because I am so concerned about what is happening at this university, with where we are now and with where we are going. Thursday April 18, 2024, will be remembered as a shameful day in Columbia history.”
“The president’s decision to send riot police to pick up peaceful protesters on our campus was unprecedented, unjustified, disproportionate, divisive and dangerous,” Brown said.
US Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose daughter Isra Hirsi was among the protesters arrested Thursday , posted on X that while she’s glad to see faculty demonstrate in solidarity with students, she wants the protests to focus on Gaza.
"On Thursday, Columbia arrested and suspended its students who were peacefully protesting and have now ignited a nationwide Gaza Solidarity movement. This is more than the students hoped for and I am glad to see this type of solidarity. But to be clear, this about the genocide in Gaza and the attention has to remain on that," Omar wrote.
NYC Mayor condemns "vile" and "disgusting" rhetoric at college campuses
From CNN's Alicia Wallace
New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday condemned “vile” and “disgusting” rhetoric being used at campuses such as Columbia University, where students are holding protests over the Israel-Hamas War.
Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he supports First Amendment rights but said law enforcement officials are on the ready if any of that speech goes too far or if there’s an imminent threat to people or property.
"That is one of the fundamental rights we hold dear as Americans: The right to protest," Adams said on CNN's "The Lead." "What we have seen playing out on many of our college campuses, and particularly Columbia University, is hate. We’re seeing vile language being used."
Adams noted that he can feel the "duality of this moment" and how the events of the past six months are weighing heavily on Jewish and Palestinian New Yorkers. He added that the police escorts of Jewish students through campus were reminiscent of the Army soldiers who escorted nine Black students into a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, nearly 67 years ago.
"There is no place for hate in this city," he said.
New York Police Department officers have a “large presence” surrounding Columbia but have remained off the campus grounds at the request of the school’s administration, NYPD deputy commissioners said earlier on Monday.
Adams told Tapper that the NYPD’s commissioner of legal matter is monitoring the protests for any speech that violates law. Additionally, police officers will take "appropriate action" and go on private property if there’s an "imminent threat."
Protesters gather at The New School in New York City
From CNN's Elisabeth Buchwald
Protesters have gathered at The New School, located near the Chelsea area of the New York City borough of Manhattan.
An encampment of four tents was set up in the lobby of the building that houses auditoriums, a cafeteria and a library. Roughly 75 students, and other people who have The New School IDs, gathered inside the building.
"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not stop, we will not rest," was repeatedly chanted.
Outside the building, protesters from the school, as well as outsiders, joined in chants from the sidewalk.
There is a stark difference between the inside and outside of Columbia University's campus
From CNN's Ramishah Maruf
There’s a stark difference between the inside of Columbia University's campus and the outside, where there are protesters gathered on the street.
The encampment is only open to those affiliated with campus. Only those with a Columbia ID can enter the campus gates. Inside the encampment, programs include teach-ins, poetry readings and film screenings. Some students are quietly finishing assignments, while others are painting posters.
Elsewhere around campus, students are eating and completing assignments. Many students take graduation pictures at this time, and some are in graduation gowns walking down Broadway. Risers are set up for an upcoming commencement ceremony.
Other students are holding large American flags underneath Butler Library.
But the students can still hear the tension that is taking place yards away at the university gates. There is a gathering of pro-Palestinian protesters, who in the early afternoon were chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long Live the Intifada.” There was a smaller group of pro-Israeli protesters, who chanted back “Down with Hamas” and “Victory to Israel.” A line of New York Police officers were monitoring the street.
What it's like inside the Columbia University encampment
The inside of the encampment is quiet – most of the noise comes from protestors outside the gates of Columbia University's campus, who are chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long live the Intifada."
It was a sunny day on campus, and in one corner, students were painting posters. One person strummed a stringed instrument, and other students are reading books or on their laptops finishing assignments. Others have donated provisions, ranging from a table of snacks to hygiene products. There was also a pile of blankets.
“We’ve just been trying to keep students mobilized and keep pushing for divestment,” Dalia, a first-year student at Columbia College, told CNN. “We are a very mobilized student body and a very unified student body. Hundreds of people have been in and out of the encampment.”
CNN agreed not to publish her surname due to safety concerns.
She said the students at the campus “refuse to be complicit in the genocide, the apartheid, and the occupation of Palestine.”
There are strict community guidelines for the encampment. One rule says not to share names or details of anyone met in camp, and asking for permission before photographing or taking video.
The encampment is filled with dozens and dozens of tents, from students to neighboring Barnard College staff. Today’s encampment program included an Earth Day performance, poetry reading and a Dabka lesson, a traditional dance from the Arab region. Prior program events included dance performances from different cultures.
Democratic House members tour Columbia campus
Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Dan Goldman of New York and Kathy Manning of North Carolina, who are all Jewish, spoke at a news conference Monday after touring Columbia University’s campus.
"We saw it firsthand as we walked past the encampments on the university's main lawn full of protesters spewing incendiary antisemitic hate and vitriol. Many aren't even Columbia students I've been told. Their campaign of intimidation is sickening and shocking and as the White House said yesterday, ‘echoes the rhetoric of Hamas terrorists,'" Gottheimer said.
He also criticized Columbia University leadership, saying, “toothless combinations from administrators aren't going to stop the anarchy we’re seeing.”
“The only way to do it is with deeds, not words,” Gottheimer said. “Colleges have a legal obligation under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide students, including Jews and Muslims, a school environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race color or national origin. Yet just feet from here, Jewish students are being verbally and even physically assaulted.”
Gottheimer continued, “To the administrators of Columbia and beyond, here are our demands: Stop the double talk and start acting now. Discipline harassers, restore civility on this campus, encourage peaceful constructive dialogue.”
He also gave a message for students: “While the leadership of Columbia may be failing you, we will not. We will do everything in our power to keep you safe and do everything in Washington we can to make sure that you feel welcome at this university or any university across the United States of America. And Columbia University, if they don't follow through, will pay the price.”
Goldman said he was "encouraged" the Columbia University president issued guidelines about additional security, calling it a "very important first step" and criticized what is happening on campus.
"That is unacceptable for a university, that is unacceptable for an academic institution. There is no question that everyone has a First Amendment right to speak out in this country and that must be preserved," Goldman said. "But a university and all universities have an obligation to maintain the safety and security of their students from all backgrounds."
Manning said university leadership should "do more to keep Jewish students safe and to re-establish an atmosphere in which all students can learn, study and participate safely in campus life."
"Columbia must also move forward with its promised efforts to teach its students and its faculty about the nature and history and dangers of antisemitism. It must ensure that Columbia professors are not encouraging and spreading antisemitism," Manning said.
"I call on the US Department of Education and the US Department of Justice to work with the White House to ensure that all universities take steps necessary to keep Jewish students and faculty safe. I also call on Congress to enact legislation to implement the steps outlined in the US national strategy to counter antisemitism, to address the scourge of antisemitism which is a threat to the foundations of our democracy," she said.
President Joe Biden condemns antisemitism on campus
From CNN's Kevin Liptak
President Joe Biden decried antisemitic protests around college campuses Monday and said his administration was working to combat anti-Jewish hatred.
"I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that," Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York.
"I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians," he said, without expanding upon what he meant.
Biden was speaking after an Earth Day event in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, Virginia.
When asked whether Columbia's president should resign, Biden appeared to mishear: "I didn’t know that. I'll have to find out more," he said.

Advancing Diversity in Medicine: TouroCOM Wins 2024 Inclusive Alumni Excellence Award
Nation's largest and oldest diversity and inclusion magazine selects university for prestigious honor.
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) is the recipient of the 2024 Alumni Association Inclusive Excellence Award from Insight into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion magazine in higher education.
The award recognizes TouroCOM’s programs, culture and initiatives that encourage and support diversity, inclusion and a sense of belonging for all alumni regardless of race, ethnic background, sexual or gender identity, religion, and socio-economic status.
“From the time we opened in 2007, the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, based in Harlem, N.Y., has been committed to increasing diversity in the physician workforce,” said Executive Dean Dr. Kenneth Steier. “By reaching out to our community, we have been able to identify promising students and help guide them into careers as physicians. This prestigious award provides a degree of external validation that our efforts are working and we are extremely proud of all of our physician alumni.”
Growth and Expansion
TouroCOM opened a second campus in Middletown, N.Y. in 2017 and a third in Great Falls, Montana in 2021. The alumni department, formed in 2017, represents just over 2,400 alumni working all over the United States, with the largest concentrations of graduates in New York and California. Alumni are employed in every medical specialty but the majority work in primary care.
“TouroCOM is one of the most progressive, inclusive and diverse medical schools, with a stated mission to increase the number of underrepresented minorities (URM) in medicine and to serve the underserved,” said Director of Development and Alumni Relations Beth Portnoy, who launched the department and has since been joined by Mary Dermigny in Middletown.
In keeping with TouroCOM’s mission, diversity is front and center in alumni programming and efforts are made to involve alumni in every possible point of the student lifecycle, said Portnoy. “We want them to feel like they’re part of the life of the school.”
Lectures, Mentoring Events, Graduations
Through an alumni lecture series, diverse alumni who are leaders in their fields share their expertise with fellow alumni, students and faculty. The lectures tackle such topics as physician burnout, unconscious bias, and mentorship.
“Speed Mentoring” events have given students a chance to get candid advice from alumni in a range of medical specialties. Online mentoring programs are co-sponsored with student organizations such as the TouroCOM Diversity Task Force, the Latino Medical Students Association, and the American Medical Women’s Association.
At a recent “Alumni of Color” event, alumni shared their experiences and success stories with students and discussed everything from work-life balance to challenges facing patients and people of color.
Alumni speakers are also featured at White Coat and graduation ceremonies, annual reunions in New York City and at receptions at national conferences, all of which offer additional opportunities for graduates to engage with the school.
Sowmya Gadey, DO, an internist at a community health center in Norwalk, CT and founding chair of the alumni board, spoke at last year’s DO commencement about the importance of community service and advocates for establishing a student-run clinic in Harlem with the help of the alumni.
“We can lead by example and show others they can do so as well,” said Gadey, who comes from a family of immigrants.
Fundraising and Communications
In 2020 the association expanded into fundraising with scholarships started by female alumni of color. The “URM UWorld Scholarship” provides annual scholarships to URM students to help defray the high cost of medical board preparation. In 2024, an alum used her first paycheck to establish a fund for students who are single mothers.
The school also communicates its commitment to diversity and inclusion by highlighting diverse alumni in the media and in internal publications, where alumni are recognized for their contributions to the school’s mission.
“Our students have a passion for mentorship, and alumni love seeing how their school has grown since they graduated and succeeded,” said Portnoy, noting residency match rates and first-pass rates on medical boards approach 100 percent every year. “The school is rapidly increasing in stature and it’s thrilling for alumni to be a part of that. Their story is our story and their success is our success.”

Former NBA champ Stephen Jackson didn’t sugarcoat his feelings about Gayle King after the co-host of “CBS Mornings” ruffled some feathers over her interview with South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley.
Taking to his Instagram Saturday, Jackson called King “trash” and accused her of “demeaning” Staley in the April 7 interview after the undefeated Gamecocks beat Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes to win the 2024 NCAA women’s title earlier this month.
Jackson explained that he took issue with King telling Staley during the interview that “we were all cheering for Iowa, of course, and Caitlin Clark,” but she and South Carolina won the hearts of so many people.
Warning: Graphic Language

Excuse me Ms. Gayle I am not sure who you are referring to when you say we all were rooting for Iowa. NO we ALL were not! 🤦🏾♂️ #Gayleking pic.twitter.com/dEO3ebas1E — Nick (@officialboss214) April 16, 2024
“So, Gayle King’s supposed to be somebody that’s big in the journalism space, right?” Jackson, 46, began in the video, which was posted to his Instagram feed . “And I don’t consider her Black media. Y’all give her all these passes because she’s Oprah’s friend. I don’t give a f–k whose friend she is.
“… But you cannot demean Dawn Staley like that. You’re talking to her about winning the championship, about going undefeated. And you have the nerve to get on there and say, ‘We was rooting for Caitlin Clark and you broke everybody’s hearts.’
“Who is ‘we’? Who is ‘we’? All the Black people I know was rooting for Dawn Staley. We’re all fans of Caitlin Clark, but the way you put it, that s–t was trash.
“I’m glad it’s a new day in the media space… You don’t even say stuff like that to somebody on an interview. You just demeaned her and made it about Caitlin Clark. That’s trash, super trash.”
Jackson — a former guard, who played for eight teams in his 14-season career — is the co-host of the “All the Smoke” podcast with fellow former NBA champ Matt Barnes as part of All The Smoke Productions.
King, 69, faced some backlash for her interview with Staley.
One person called it a “bulls–t statement” by King.
“She owes Dawn Staley an apology,” another person wrote on X , including Jackson’s video.
King has yet to address Jackson’s comments as of Monday afternoon — nor has Staley.
The Basketball Hall of Famer is on cloud nine after she and the Gamecocks received a personal gift and congratulatory card from Beyonce after coaching the them to their second title in three years.
Staley also praised Clark for playing a major role in helping grow the women’s game at the college level after the championship game.
Separately, King made headlines when CNN canceled her weekly talk show with Charles Barkley, “King Charles” last week.
