Your stay in Kathmandu with Tauck takes you to Pashupatinath Temple on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, one of the holiest of all Hindu temples... a flightseeing adventure above the alpine landscapes of Mount Everest... a tour of Durbar Square, where ancient temples and pagodas are clustered around the old royal palace... a visit to Kasthamandap, the namesake of Kathmandu, said to be built from a single mythical tree... a rickshaw ride through the marketplace of Thamel ... and a visit to Kopan Monastery, where you'll take your shoes off and join the monks before traveling to the colossal stupa of Boudhanath, encircled by images of Buddha and hundreds of prayer wheels.

The Taj Mahal in Agra, India

A timeless monument to love in agra.

You could say that India's Taj Mahal is so famous that it needs no introduction… but it's so compelling a destination that it's hard not to talk about it. Considered the greatest achievement of Indo-Islamic architecture, this exquisite, domed, white marble mausoleum complex in Agra was commissioned in 1632 and completed two decades later as the tomb and memorial of Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Constructed at a cost that would be upwards of USD $825 million today, it ranks among history's most expensive declarations of love. Along with touring it with a local guide, you'll also see it from your hotel room!

The Khajuraho Temples, India

The Indian town of Madya Pradesh is home to what today is known as the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you'll visit with Tauck, comprises a famous group of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Chandela Rajput Dynasty, praised by UNESCO for striking a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture... and famous both for their nagara-style symbolism, and the provocative nature of the statuary decorating many of the temples. Of the 85 or so temples that historians believed once stood in this area, only 25 have survived the ravages of time.

The stunning city of Jaipur, India, is home to such highlights as the City Palace Museum, the Jantar Mantar Observatory, the massive gateways and pillared pavilions inside Amber Fort, and the magnificent domes and massive ramparts of Amber Palace. And there's no more exciting way to see these treasures than from above – aboard a hot air balloon soaring over Jaipur – an experience that's included in our "A Portrait of India" journey.

This sprawling city has a deep history and is filled with cultural and architectural treasures. The city is made up of many sections including New Delhi, which is the governmental capital of India and known as the cultural center of the country.

The Taj Mahal:

In 1631, Emperor Shah Jahan, during a time of great wealth in India, lost his wife and was overwhelmed by grief. He ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal the following year. It took over 20 years and thousands of craftsmen to complete. Named one of the Seven Wonders of the World, you’ll discover an exquisite marble building of immeasurable beauty and intricate gardens that frame its immense reflecting pool.

Find a city with a mosaic of lovely marble buildings that rise up alongside the tranquil Lake Pichola. It is a magical place with its own unique charms. Home to magnificent monuments and gorgeous palaces with a matchless setting, this remarkable city, founded in 1568, will take you back in time with its narrow winding streets and historic architecture.

Discover a royal city known for its enchanting Rajasthan architecture and magnificent palaces. It is nicknamed the “Pink City” for the hue of the stones used in its buildings, giving it a character all its own. Cruise on Lake Pichola:

There is no better way to take in the city of Udaipur than on a beautiful sunset cruise on Lake Pichola. Glide along the calm waters of one of the largest lakes in the region. Take in the picturesque skyline dotted with mansions and palaces, surrounded by tranquility.

Rickshaw Ride:

Get to know the true India by hopping aboard this truly unique Old Delhi mode of transportation! Wind your way through the narrow streets and alleyways with an array of traditional architecture, colorful shops, and small cafes. Make stops along the way to see the historic treasures of the city.

See another side of India when boarding a canter (open-air vehicle) in Ranthambore National Park to discover the country’s wildlife. Have the opportunity to see crocodiles, hyenas, sloth bears, and of course, the park’s famous residents – the diurnal tigers.

Ganga Aarti Ceremony:

Get a glimpse into Hindu tradition by joining the locals to witness a Ganga Aarti Ceremony on the banks of the country’s most sacred river – the River Ganges. These ceremonies offer fire to the Goddess Ganga usually through a lit lamp that is floated down the river.

The best way to get around is by auto rickshaws and taxis. They may not be shiny and new like much of the western world, but it is an experience in itself and inexpensive.

In Udaipur, shop for colorful embroidered textiles, miniature paintings and papier mache puppets. If jewels are on your list, the "pink city" of Jaipur is the place.

India’s residents are still very conscious of social hierarchy (age, academic degree and profession). It is best to greet the oldest individual in a group first, use titles and avoid using first names unless invited to do so, especially when addressing the older generation.

Every traveller is different and therefore spending money requirements will vary. Some travellers may drink more than others while other travellers like to purchase more souvenirs than most. Please consider your own spending habits when it comes to allowing for drinks, shopping and tipping. Please also remember the following specific recommendations when planning your trip. There are many ATM machines that accept both Visa and Mastercard but these are limited to major cities. We also recommend the use of cash and travellers cheques in USD currency. Major credit cards are accepted in most shops but they may charge a 2-4% transaction fee.

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected - though not compulsory - and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people who have assisted you on your tour.

Drivers/Local Guides

$ 1-2 usd/day.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD1-2 per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture.

G Adventures CEO

$ 20- $ 30 usd.

At the end of each trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however as a guideline USD20-30 per person, per week can be used.

Packing for India

We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as you are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bag which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like ipods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in home stays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in India

In India the power plugs and sockets are of type C, D and M. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. You can use your electric appliances in India, if the standard voltage in your country is in between 220 - 240 V (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa). Manufacturers take these small deviations into account. If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100 V - 127 V (as is in the US, Canada and most South American countries), you need a voltage converter in India. You can also consider a combined power plug adapter/voltage converter.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to India?

Yes, all foreigners entering India will need a visa. Whether you can apply for an e-visa is dependent on your nationality, the duration of your India tour and how you plan on entering the country.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travelers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travelers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now ­– let your inner child rejoice!

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Amazing Jungle Safari Experience at Ranthambore National Park

We used Tour My India to visit Ranthambore National Park. Our contact person was Mr Naveen who was very thorough in answering my questions and providing information before and during our tour. Our driver to and from Jaipur was Mr Vikas. Driving in India can be a little wild, so we appreciated his safe driving. Our train out of Jaipur was later in the evening, so Mr Naveen arranged with Mr Vikas to take us to a restaurant for lunch and then be available to take us to the station. We appreciated this extra care attention to what we needed! Although we did not get to see any tigers, we did enjoy our visit to Ranthambore National Park!

The official language is Hindi which is spoken by about 30% of the population, but English is often used for official or commercial purposes. Additionally, there are more than 100 other regional languages and dialects, including Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Oriya, which are widely used in the north, and Tamil and Telugu, which are common in the south. India’s currency is the rupee (Rs). You can’t buy rupees outside of India — tell our representative at the airport and they’ll direct you to an ATM.

What people love about Luxury Tours in India

We did a Delhi - Jaipur - Ranthambore tour and the trip was so well co-ordinated and curated by Sonia. The car and driver we had deserves a 5 star rating - he knew the restaurant spots to stop by on the way, drove safely and provided an effortless journey. Sonia was available on-hand for communication all the throughout the trip via WhatsApp so we didn't need it! Our tour guide in Jaipur knew everything! From the history of the forts and monuments we visited to hidden gems for shopping - we bought block-printed fabrics and juttis that Jaipur is famous for. Both hotels in Jaipur and Ranthambore were great. Comfortable stays.. good food.. extremely friendly staff! We will definitely be using this service again and recommending it to all our friends who want to visit India!

Good overview of India.

The hotels, which were actually mostly palaces, and the tour guides and driver -all were beyond our highest expectations! We were treated like royalty everywhere we went, people were kind and humble with us. The main tour sites, such as the Taj, the Amber Fort, and Ranthambore Safari attractions were all exquisite -we even had a close encounter with a Bengal tiger! They only disappointment was the condition of the roads in India and all of the plastic trash along the routes, which was being consumed by all sorts of animals, but this is sadly beyond Touradar's control.

The Men’s Selection Committee has picked a 15-member squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. India will visit Harare in the first week of July to participate in a 5-match T20I series against the hosts.
