Tour description

Spend the perfect day on the amalfi coast on a carefully curated tour from rome..

Most Amalfi Coast tours from Rome stick to the roads, seeing the crystal-clear waters of the coastline from above but hardly glimpsing its cliffside towns at all. This tour is different. You’ll take in the breathtaking coast from both land and sea for the most complete experience possible! Touring the Amalfi Coast on the water, you’ll have perfect views of the coastline’s most famous asset: its colorful towns. Along the way, you'll step onto dry land for an authentic limoncello tasting in a pretty orchard with stunning views. You’ll also explore the idyllic streets of both Amalfi Town and Positano with plenty of opportunities to go sightseeing, do a bit of shopping, and maybe even splash in the sea if the mood takes you.

Carefully balancing the value and expertise of a guided tour with free time to explore and shop at your own pace, our full-day Amalfi Coast tour from Rome offers you the perfect day in paradise without the hassle of organizing your own trains, cars, and ferry rides.

Head from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by train with a guide by your side.

Your Amalfi Coast tour from Rome meets early in the morning at Termini train station. Meet your friendly English-speaking guide and set off on a comfortable 90-minute journey by high-speed train. After arriving in Salerno, you’ll board a small ferry and relax as you watch the stunning Amalfi coastline stretch out before you, giving you a panoramic snapshot of the sights to come.

Go boat-hopping and taste homemade limoncello for an authentic Amalfi experience.

Now it’s time for a little touring on foot. Climbing ashore at Amalfi town, you’ll slip away from the crowds as you follow your guide uphill to a beautiful cliffside lemon orchard run by the same family for six generations. You'll walk through groves of fragrant lemon trees on this nature excursion just for your tour group as you learn what makes lemons from the Amalfi coast unique. With the coast and sea spread out below you, you’ll enjoy a demonstration and tasting of one of the region's most beloved products: sweet, tangy limoncello. Made right on the farm, there's nothing better. From there, you'll head back down to the streets of Amalfi with plenty of time to do a little strolling, shopping and snacking.

Putter around the picturesque town of Positano.

After more time spent cruising the water, the next port of call on your Amalfi Coast tour is Positano!

Following an orientation walk with your guide, you’ll have approximately two and a half hours of free time to explore the charming fishing village, a popular haunt among Hollywood’s biggest and brightest. Sample fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, shop the stylish boutiques, or simply slip into the sea for a quick splash!

As the afternoon draws to a close, you’ll meet your guide and board the boat one last time for a scenic cruise back to Salerno. Hop on a train for your return to Rome—you'll be back in the Eternal City just in time for dinner!

Please note: In the rare event of rough seas where it is impossible to travel by ferry, we will provide a private bus to take you up and down the coast so you won't miss a thing!

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

Una vera e propria esperienza! Miglior tour fatto fuori Roma: la nostra guida Enrica è stata simpaticissima e molto disponibile, sempre pronta a rispondere a qualsiasi domanda avessimo.

Beautiful trip! A day out of the city, sun, blue sea and the extraordinary beauty, colors and views of Positano and Amalfi! I've wanted to visit these famous places for a long time, and even though I live in Rome I've never had the chance to do so. This perfectly organized tour (Enrica, our guide, was very friendly and kept everything in perfect control so we didn't have to worry about a thing !) full of pleasant and unique moments was the best opportunity!I loved the visit to the lemon farm on the hill, where we sipped fresh Limoncello while enjoying a beautiful view of Amalfi. Then Positano, what can I say, alleys full of shops selling typical ceramics and characteristic colorful clothes, colorful houses one on top of the other along the hill overlooking the sea forming a unique spectacle. And finally swimming in the blue and transparent sea! Great for getting away from everyday life and living a day-long dream!

We went on this tour with my girlfriend for her birthday. It was a very hot day, as it was the end of July, but it was definitely worth it. Amalfi and Positano are postcard-perfect places, and seeing them from the perspective of a boat is a unique experience that touches your soul. John and Eileneen were our amazing guides, who enriched the experience with both historical and fun anecdotes we weren’t aware of. The best part of this fantastic tour was drinking an excellent homemade limoncello on a private terrace in the middle of a lemon grove above Amalfi, open only for us, where we witnessed one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen in my life. 100% recommended!!

This tour has been one of the best experiences we’ve ever had! The views from the boat were simply breathtaking, giving us a whole new appreciation for these iconic towns. Our guides, John and Eileneen, were exceptional. They were not only well-prepared guides, but also incredibly engaging, sharing fascinating historical facts and funny stories that added so much to the tour. The highlight of the day had to be the private stop at a lemon grove. Sipping an homemade limoncello while enjoying the best panoramic view, was a magical experience. It felt like a once in a lifetime moment that we will remember forever. I can’t recommend this tour enough, it’s an absolute must do if you’re visiting the Amalfi Coast!

Your adventure kicks off bright and early in Piazza di Porta San Paolo 1, near to Piramide Metro Stop, where you’ll join your guide and fellow explorers and board a comfortable, air-conditioned bus for a scenic hour’s drive to the Port of Anzio. Along the way, watch as Rome’s urban sprawl transforms into rolling hills and lush farmlands, and keep an eye out for ancient ruins peeking through olive groves and quaint villages. Before you know it, you’ll arrive at the charming Port of Anzio and switch to a speedy boat for a thrilling hour-and-a-half ride across the stunning blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to Ponza Island Port.

Welcome to Ponza Island

Upon docking in Ponza, it’ll be impossible to hide your delight. Brightly colored houses perched on rocky hillsides greet your arrival, along with a cheerful fleet of boats bobbing on gentle waves. According to Greek mythology, the island was known as Eea and was famously mentioned in Homer's Odyssey. It was here that the enchantress Circe lived, casting spells to transform sailors into animals and enchanting women into sirens. This mystical past adds an intriguing layer to the island's allure.

But don’t get too swept away by the island’s laid-back vibe. Your adventure is just beginning, and there’s another boat waiting!

Five-Hour Ponza Boat Tour

Get ready for the highlight of your day—a five-hour boat tour that takes you through Ponza’s hidden coves, around jaw-dropping rock formations, and into stunning blue grottoes. Your guide will sprinkle in fascinating tales about the island’s landmarks, rich history, and present-day charm.

The Romans recognized Ponza for its strategic location and built aqueducts, villas, and even a necropolis. Over the centuries, the island, part of the Pontine Islands, has seen a tapestry of civilizations, including the Byzantines, Saracens, and the Bourbon kingdom, each leaving their mark on the island's cultural and architectural landscape.

Enjoy the Unique Landscapes of Ponza

But this tour isn’t just about soaking in the sights. With four to five stops along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to dive into crystal-clear waters and snorkel with vibrant tropical fish.

First up are the Natural Pools, where crystal-clear waters make for a perfect dip. Then, we’ll head to Frontone, a gorgeous beach that’s great for relaxing and soaking up the sun. An unmissable stop will be Chiaia di Luna, with its stunning cliffs and unique lunar landscape.

And just when you think the day can’t get any better, the mouthwatering aroma of a freshly prepared pasta lunch will beckon you back to the boat. Enjoy a delightful picnic-style meal as you soak up the sun and sea—this is island living at its absolute best.

Free Time at Ponza’s Port & Return to Rome

Back on solid ground, the next hour’s yours to unwind and explore Ponza’s Port independently. Savor a creamy gelato, sip a refreshing spritz while enjoying the unhurried pace of the island, and tuck into boutique shops to find your perfect keepsake. Just remember to keep an eye on the time—at 5:30 pm, it’s all aboard for a boat journey back to Anzio. From there, hop onto the comfy, air-conditioned bus for your return to Rome, with an expected arrival around 9 pm. It might be late, but with Ponza’s magic still fresh in your mind, you'll find it hard to wipe that smile off your face!

7 BEST Amalfi Coast Tours from Rome [2024]

By: Author Stefania Guglielmi

Posted on Last updated: July 11, 2024

Categories Europe , Italy

Renowned for its staggering coastline and colorful villages, the Amalfi Coast is considered one of the gems of Southern Italy. And it’s also one of the most coveted holiday destinations for both locals and tourists.

I was born and raised in Bologna , a city a few hours north of the Amalfi Coast, yet somehow I only visited this region for the first time a few years ago. And now I can see why everyone’s obsessed with it!

Picture of the Amalfi Coast, with the blue waters of the Gulf of Naples on the right

I always recommend spending at least 2-3 nights on the Amalfi Coast to explore it properly. It truly has a lot in store to offer its visitors.

However, I know that many people just can’t add extra days to their vacation – yet, they don’t want to leave Italy without visiting the famous coastline. Understandable!

If you’re planning a trip to Rome, have limited time, and want to explore this breathtaking region, a day tour is a perfect way to do it. In fact, I do NOT recommend going on a day trip from Rome on your own .

You can theoretically do it, but it will be a logistical nightmare and you’ll end up spending the vast majority of your time in trains, buses or ferries.

Our list of Amalfi Coast day tours is super comprehensive, offering excursions that include visits to Pompeii and Capri as well. This way, you can make the most of your time in the area!

Whether you’re interested in history, culture, or simply soaking up the beauty of the coastline, there’s a tour on this list that’s perfect for you . So sit back, relax, and let us guide you through the best Amalfi Coast tours from Rome.

Why should you trust my suggestions? I was born and raised in Bologna, Italy, and have explored the Amalfi Coast on several occasions. Not only I’m familiar with the region, but I have a decade of experience helping people plan their trips to Italy (and around the world!)

I know exactly what a tour needs to offer to be worthy of your time and money, and have a knack for identifying the highest-quality, top-notch excursions out there. You can expect to find here only the best!

I use Viator and Get Your Guide to book tours around the world, and I especially recommend them because of their cancellation policy. Both platforms allow you to cancel most activities up to 24 hours in advance and receive a full refund.

Limited time? These are the best tours :

OUR PICK: The BEST Amalfi Coast Day Trip from Rome

The Boat-Hopping On The Amalfi Coast: Day Trip from Rome is a full-day excursion for small groups. You’ll leave the Eternal City on a fast-speed train, accompanied by a professional guide.

Upon reaching Salerno, you’ll board a ferry and cruise past the pastel-colored towns perched on the cliffs. It’s a sight to behold!

Stop for a visit in Amalfi Town, and head to a lemon orchard for a demonstration and tastings of limoncello. Then, make the most of your free time to wander around the enchanting town.

Your trip continues with another ferry ride to Positano, the quintessential village of the Amalfi Coast. Learn all the best spots from your guide, and then go explore on your own. Be sure to check out the viewpoints, and the cute shops!

At the end of the day, catch a boat to return to Salerno, where you’ll take the high-speed train back to Rome.

Why is this the best tour? It’s the perfect introduction to the Amalfi Coast, offering plenty of time to explore its major towns: Amalfi and Positano. You’ll enjoy not one, but three scenic ferry rides along the coastline, and you’ll even sample the famous limoncello liquor.

Rome River Cruise

If Rome’s traffic puts you off taking sightseeing by bus, how about a peaceful cruise down the river?

The Tiber River, or Tevere in Italian, is the third longest river in Italy and is famous for being one of the defining characteristics of Rome. Because of its historical importance and worldwide fame, a Rome river cruise could be a fantastic idea for those who want a break from touring this stunning ancient city on foot.

The Tiber River

The river Tiber divides the ancient city of Rome, with all its historic monuments , from the Vatican and Trastevere neighborhoods .

The river has been part of some of Rome’s dramatic moments of history. Romulus and Remus were found by the She-Wolf by the Tiber, and at least one emperor and pope were disposed of in her waters.

Until the 19 th century, the river was a major feature of the city, flooding annually and filling the city with water. You can still see signs around the city showing the level the water reached in different years – there’s a beautiful Medieval one from 1277 on Via Arco dei Banchi, close to Castel Sant’Angelo .

Then high embankments were built, and the river today is mostly seen from the bridges above.

But at each bridge , there are stairs down to the river. The Vatican side is popular with joggers and cyclists, and in the summer, bars and food stalls line the riverbanks as part of the Estate Romana. The other side is less well-kept, and few people use it.

Rome by Boat

Taking a cruise down the river is a great way to escape the crowds for a while. In summer, the cooler air can be a welcome relief from the heat and traffic of the city streets. The boat is also a quick way to get from Piazza del Popolo to Trastevere .

Types Of Cruises

Hop-on, hop-off.

If you don’t want to be on your feet all day, the boat is a great transport option. While there are lots of buses in the center, there’s also a lot of traffic, and moving can be a slow, sweaty process. With the boat, you can get from Piazza del Popolo to Trastevere in about 20 minutes.

There are audio guides available in different languages, but my booking confirmation didn’t explain that you have to bring your own headphones (none of the other passengers had been told this either).

There’s also a single trip option which will save you a few euros and take you once in each direction.

Daily from 10.00 to 17.00

Boats pass every 30 minutes.

Aperitivo Cruise

When in Rome, you will quickly learn to love the Italian habit of an aperitivo before dinner. Instead of having dinner at the usual time, book a cruise down the river with a glass of wine and traditional snacks. You’ll appreciate the cool air and quieter atmosphere away from the city traffic while you float down the Tiber.

The ticket for this cruise includes a 24hr ticket for the boat, so you can spend the next day hopping on and off to visit riverside monuments like the Ara Pacis , Campo dè Fiori or do some shopping on the exclusive Via Giulia.

18.00 Thursday – Sunday

From Castel Sant’Angelo pier

Sushi Cruise

For a more international drinks experience, the Sushi Cruise comes with fresh sushi and the cocktail of your choice. The leisurely trip down the river takes 75 minutes and also includes a 24hr ticket so you can come back the next day.

18.00 Monday – Wednesday

From Castel Sant’Angelo Pier

Practical Information

Reaching the river.

The Tiber has a very high embankment. There are steps down to the river close to each of the bridges. Most of them are very steep, though the ones in Trastevere are easier to walk down.

The steps to the Trastevere boat stop

If you aren’t able to walk down the steps, there is a ramp on Lungotevere Ripa, near Porta Sublicio, about a 10-minute walk from Tiber Island.

The main stop is at Trastevere. Here you’ll find a ticket office in case you haven’t bought your ticket online. This is the only stop on the Trastevere/Vatican side of the river.

boat trip from rome

To reach the stop, you can cross the river at Ponte Garibaldi or Ponte Cestio (the island bridge). There are steps to the river next to both bridges. Take either of them, and you’ll find the departure point is almost in front of you when you get to the bottom.

If you are coming by public transport , take the no.8 tram or H bus and get off at Piazza Belli, then cross the road to the river.

The Trastevere stop

There are 3 other stops, though 2 of them are request stops. If anyone is waiting or asks to get off at Ponte Sisto or Castel Sant’Angelo, the boat will dock. Otherwise, it continues until it reaches Ponte Cavour.

After picking up any passengers, the boat turns around and heads back to Trastevere, this time without stopping. The direct journey takes about 20 minutes.

If you want to get on at any of the other stops, be warned that the signposting to find them is almost non-existent. There are no signs at street level, and the signs are so small you can’t see them from the other side of the river.

Signs at the stops are minimal

What To See

You don’t actually see much from the river because of the high embankment and the many trees that line the roads on either side. There are no real sights until the river bends close to the Vatican, then you’ll see St. Peter’s at a distance (it’s not next to the river), Castel Sant’Angelo , and the angels on the bridge outside.

Don’t expect to see a lot of sights from the river

Experience On Board

The experience is very relaxing. The crew collects your ticket or takes a photo of your online booking form and provides you with a receipt, then you are free to sit inside or upstairs.

Inside seating

The boats are not modern. There are benches at the side upstairs and downstairs and additional plastic seating (and tables downstairs).

The seating options upstairs

The multilingual audio guide is built into the benches, but headphones are not provided. If you want to bring your own, you will need headphones with a jack connection.

There is a small restroom on board.

The restroom could be a bit of a squeeze

  • Don’t expect a sightseeing tour. Most monuments aren’t by the river as it used to flood a lot. However, it is a nice way to move across the center quickly and calmly.
  • Bring headphones with a jack connection if you want to use the audio guide.
  • The steps to the river at Trastevere aren’t too difficult, but be warned they are steep and quite narrow at other points. Particularly if you have a pushchair or heavy bags, you might struggle.
  • Stop at the kiosk between the steps and the bridge to Tiber Island to try the best grattachecca in the city. These summer drinks are the Roman version of a Slushy. A massive block of ice is shaved by hand as you wait with a special tool, then the ice is covered in syrup and topped with fruit.

✈ Travel Resources For Your Trip ✈

Here are some of my favorite travel resources I use for my travel adventures.

Perfect Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast: Itinerary

If you want to visit the Amalfi Coast from Rome in a day, follow this itinerary to enjoy it fully.

Take the ‘Italo’ high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale in the morning.

After, catch a train from Napoli Centrale to Salerno . Salerno is at the end of the Amalfi Coast, and you’ll return to Naples, visiting a few places on the Amalfi Coast.

Then, walk or take a taxi from the train station in Salerno to the port of Salerno . The boat leaves from the port called ‘ Molo Concordia ‘.

First, take a boat from Salerno to Amalfi . Take some time (approx. 2 hours) to explore Amalfi. Visit its beautiful cathedral, walk around, and eat delicious gelato.

After, take a boat from Amalfi to Positano . Explore Positano, go to the beach, go shopping, and enjoy the stunning views of the town.

Then, take a boat from Positano to Sorrento . From Sorrento, take the Campania Express to Napoli Centrale (the main train station in Naples). In the evening, take a train from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini .

How to get from rome to amalfi coast.

You can get to Amalfi Coast from Rome by train, bus, car, and a ferry or boat .

The fastest and easiest way to get to Amalfi Coast on a day trip is by train and boat .

Alternatively, you can rent a car in Rome and drive, but I don’t recommend it. The roads at the Amalfi Coast are tiny, and you might often find yourself stuck in a traffic jam.

Below, I’m presenting all the alternatives for getting from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.

Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast By Train

The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast from Rome is to take the Italo train in the morning from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale .

After, change to a train to Sorrento or Salerno . Sorrento is at the beginning of the Amalfi Coast, and Salerno is at the end of the coast. From these places, you can only take boats to the towns on the Amalfi Coast.

So then take a boat from Sorrento or Salerno to the Amalfi Coast , either Positano or Amalfi.

Note that there is no direct train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast . You can only reach the Amalfi Coast by bus, car, or boat.

➡ Book your trains via Trainline with best deals.

Amalfi Coast Tour From Rome By High-Speed Train

You can take the ‘Italo’ high-speed train from Rome to Naples , which only takes 1 hour . Note that there are no trains to the Amalfi Coast.

You can only get to Sorrento and Salerno (the Amalfi Coast’s start and end) by local trains . The only high-speed train that operates from Rome closest to the Amalfi Coast is to Naples.

rome to amalfi coast day trip rome to positano

Day Trip To Amalfi Coast From Rome By Bus

You can get from Rome to Sorrento or Salerno by bus , but it isn’t impossible on a day trip .

The bus journey from Rome to these cities takes between 4 and 5 hours , which gives you little time to explore the Amalfi Coast and return to Rome on the same day.

If you decide to spend a couple of nights on the Amalfi Coast and want to take a bus to get there, I recommend Flixbus .

You can take Flixbus from Rome to Sorrento . Then, take a boat from Sorrento to one of the Amalfi Coast towns (Positano or Amalfi).

➡ Check all the bus connections from Rome to Sorrento here.

Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast By Car

Making a day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by car is a good idea . But it’s important to know that the roads alongside the Amalfi Coast are tiny and curvy . There is a high chance you’ll be stuck in a traffic jam for a long time.

So the best way to make a day trip by car is to drive from Rome to Sorrento early in the morning. Then, leave your car in Sorrento and take a boat to Positano or Amalfi . Then take a boat back to Sorrento and drive to Rome in the evening.

It’s one of the most efficient and flexible ways to make a day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.

RENT A CAR FOR YOUR ITINERARY

boat trip from rome

Rent A Car Via Discover Cars – best prices and big selection of car rentals. PRO TIP: Check ratings of the company you choose before booking ( ratings can be off ). Go on Google, see ratings of the car rental company, then book on Discover Cars.

Day Trip From Rome To Amalfi Coast By Boat

You can partially make a day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast by boat . There are no direct ferries from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.

So you’ll first have to take a high-speed train, ‘Italo’, from Rome to Naples. Afterward, you can take another train to Sorrento or Salerno and take a boat to the Amalfi Coast towns (Positano or Amalfi).

➡ Check all the boat connections on the Amalfi Coast & book your tickets here.

Ferry Amalfi Coast

That’s amore.

Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, were photographed sharing a sweet kiss in front of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy, on Tuesday.

The couple — who got engaged last year — stood in front of the architectural landmark, paying no mind to the crowd of tourists around them.

First, they participated in the tradition of tossing coins into the fountain using their right hands, an act which is accompanied by making a wish.

Then, the pair turned to face each other and smooched on the lips, perhaps sealing their wishes with a kiss.

For the outing, the Amazon founder, 60, sported a white fitted golf shirt, which showed off his bulging arm muscles, navy blue pants and light gray boating shoes.

Sánchez, 54, turned up the heat in a red halter minidress, which she paired with tan peep-toe heels. She wore her black hair pulled back into a messy ‘do, which highlighted her diamond stud earrings.

The duo continued their PDA by holding hands and walking along the cobblestone until they reached their dinner destination: Pierluigi.

Photographers then captured Bezos and the former news anchor enjoying a romantic date night featuring white wine, salad, bread and a singular red rose on the table.

The two gazed into each others eyes and conversed as they held hands from across the table. At one point, Sánchez even let out a belly laugh.

Over the weekend, Bezos and his soon-to-be wife hosted a handful of famous friends on the businessman’s $485 million, 417-foot megayacht , which accommodates up to 18 guests.

The lovebirds were snapped soaking up the Sardinia sun with two other couples: Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Vittoria Ceretti.

The A-list group came to shore on one of Bezos’ smaller boats for lunch at a high-end beach resort before heading back to the massive vessel: Koru.

Bezos and Sánchez have spent most of their summer traveling around Europe aboard Koru. They kicked off their overseas adventures in Greece with Kim Kardashian before traveling through the Mediterranean Sea and up to Italy.

While  living on Bezos’ “super big boat,”  a source previously told Page Six that Sánchez — a certified helicopter pilot  — has been “seen flying a helicopter on and off their support boat, where they keep all their toys,” including “helicopters, speed boats and other water toys.”

The mammoth ship — which the billionaire began building in 2018 — has three outdoor decks, two swimming pools, a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .

Stylistically, it’s  complete with a figurehead of the Freyja — the Norse goddess of love, fertility, war and gold — which  bears an uncanny resemblance to Sánchez .

Bezos also owns a “smaller” $75-million yacht named Abeona, which shadows his larger one.
