As one of the first outfitters to take guests paddling on Clear Creek, we have years of experience and have developed a special affection for this waterway’s narrow, technical nature. The Creek shoots out of the Colorado mountains high atop the Continental Divide and rushes toward Denver at a steady clip. It’s rafting in Colorado as you’d expect it…exhilarating and stunning at the same time.

Colorado Adventure Center offers white water rafting adventures for every experience level, from scenic float trips on which you get a chance to view wildlife or sit quietly listening to nature, to heart-stopping white water rapids with crashing waves and vigorous paddling. To enhance your rafting experience, why not get familiar with Clear Creek and the class of rapids you will be navigating. Here is a little history on Clear Creek and its different sections of white water.

Clear Creek is the 2nd most rafted river in Colorado, and for good reason. With more rapids per mile than any other river in Colorado, Clear Creek offers world class rafting conveniently located just 40 minutes from Downtown Denver. Clear Creek is a tributary of the South Platte River, approximately 66 miles long. The creek flows through Clear Creek Canyon in the Rocky Mountains, directly west of Denver, and descends through a long gorge where it emerges on the Colorado Eastern Plains and eventually joins the South Platte River. Clear Creek is unusual because it is actually a stream, but named a “creek” and is fed by stream called a “river” – the Fall River, which empties into Clear Creek along I-70 west of Idaho Springs.

Clear Creek is famous for its location as one of the most intense early gold mining hot spots during the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. Clear Creek also provided the route for the Colorado Central Railroad and later, U.S. Highway 6 and I-70.

The Clear Creek riverbed is composed of blasted river rock as a result of the gold mining industry. This is what creates the rumbling rapids through Clear Creek Canyon as water flows over river rock and makes for challenging raft trips as you navigate through these giant boulders and class II – IV rapids. Appropriately named by French hunters on the Stephen H. Long expedition as early as 1820, Clear Creek was originally called Cannonball Creek – after the oversized river rock. In the 1830s, Clear Creek became known as Vasquez Fork and later, Vasquez River, after fur trader Louis Vasquez who built his fort at the mouth of Clear Creek and trapped along it. Clear Creek officially gained its present name from the gold rushers in 1859.

Kayakers discovered Clear Creek in the 1950s, but were chase away with the construction of I-70. Then, in 1989, commercial rafting kicked off on Clear Creek and has since become one of Colorado’s most popular white water rafting and kayaking destinations.

Clear Creek has an average gradient of 67 feet per mile and over 100 feet per mile on its advanced sections – simply meaning more rapids per mile. Clear Creek is divided into different sections according to class of rapids from perfect beginner rapids to thrilling intermediate and heart-racing advanced sections. Here at Colorado Adventure Center’s Idaho Springs Base Camp, Clear Creek typically runs from Class II to Class IV rapids, providing fast-paced, exciting white water conveniently located along I-70. Colorado Adventure Center runs beginner rafting trips between Idaho Springs and Two Bears Tap and Grill (previously historic Kermits), and intermediate and advanced trips along the neighboring historic mining towns of Dumont and Lawson.

A little further up the the hill from Denver, the Upper Clear Creek runs Class IV and V rapids, offering exhilarating white water that is both fast-paced and challenging. For even more of a challenge, the Lower Clear Creek Canyon, close to Golden, houses Class IV and V rapids. This exciting section of white water provides a great side raft trip just outside the city.. While fun to watch, this section is advanced, steep, technical, and demanding white water, and not for the faint of heart!

The weather in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is very unpredictable and varies from mile to mile and minute to minute. Colorado averages over 300 days of sunshine a year. The odds are, the weather will be good. We run our  Colorado white water rafting trips in all weather conditions, rain or shine, and have gear available to help keep you comfortable, even in the worst conditions. Wetsuits, neoprene booties, and splash tops can really make a big difference and make your trip a pleasurable one. Don’t forget, you’re going to get wet rafting, even on the sunniest of days. Weather is not a cause for cancellation.

Nope! Except for advanced,  you can go white water rafting even if you can’t swim . Each person will be fitted with a Type-V Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (life jacket) to be worn while on the river at all times. This life jacket is designed to float the wearer on their back with their head out of the water. Guests are instructed on the proper use of this life jacket in a safety orientation talk before departure. It does help to have some knowledge of swimming, especially in some of the more aggressive sections.

We have a beautiful new basecamp facility and boathouse in Idaho Springs/Dumont right off of I-70 where we’ll meet, get you checked in, geared up, and introduce you to your guide. We provide location and directions in our reservation confirmation letter to you when you reserve your trip. Then, we take care of everything else, including transportation between the river and the basecamp. We are located at 2697 Stanley Road, Idaho Springs, CO 80452. You may call our office at 720-807-3250 for more specific directions to our basecamp.

All our guides go through extensive river training, basic first aid, CPR, and are certified by the state of Colorado. While anyone can fall out of the boat at any time, keep in mind that your chances of falling out of the raft do increase when rafting in a paddle boat and on more challenging sections of river. Rafting is an adventure sport and involves a degree of risk on the part of the participant. Although we take precautions to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip, we cannot be responsible for lost or damaged articles and/or personal injury. We require you to acknowledge these risks by reading and signing a liability release prior to departure. All children under the age of 18 must have signed release form from a parent or guardian. It is important for the group to choose a trip within their entire group’s limits. Read our Customer Responsibility Policy for more information.

Altitude sickness can be a problem, especially for people coming to the mountains from sea level. To prevent altitude sickness, stay hydrated by drinking extra amounts of water, and stay away from alcohol and caffeine. Altitude sickness can be serious. You may experience an upset stomach, headaches, dizziness, or shortness of breath — please inform your guide so they are aware of your symptoms and can begin treatment as soon as possible.

Our guides make a base wage similar to a bartender or wait person. General guidelines for tipping would be the same as for a bartender or a waitperson (~20%). Please do not feel obligated to tip, but if you do believe in tipping, and the guide has proven to do a great job, it is a nice way to express your appreciation, but only if you feel you had a safe, fun, and informative experience. If you did not have a pleasurable and adequate experience, we would appreciate it if you would please bring it to the attention of our management. Feedback and letters from our guests are greatly appreciated and helps us maintain the highest standard of customer service and appreciation.

You are going to get wet, so it’s a good idea to be prepared. Avoid cotton clothing, as it tends to get wet and stay wet – not to mention taking valuable warmth from your body’s surface. Bathing suits and shorts are recommended. Your best bet is loose, woven materials such as wool, polypro, fleece, micro fleece, polyester, waterproof jackets, and any other outdoor material that dries fast. Staying dry, or at least drying off fast, is the key to staying warm. Towels don’t do you much good because there is no way to keep them dry. There is limited space on the rafts, so you should limit what you bring to what you can wear. We provide wetsuits and have booties and splash tops available for rent. This equipment is designed to keep you warm and comfortable. Personal flotation devices (PFDs) and helmets are included with all rafting adventures. On some Colorado white water rafting trips, wetsuits are recommended and on others, wetsuits are required. This is to help keep you warm, comfortable and protected on your white water rafting trip.

Bring a few towels to leave in your car; you’ll be happy to have something to dry off with after white water rafting. Bring a change of dry clothes to leave in your car; our basecamps offer changing rooms so you can be comfortable after your Colorado raft adventure. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, sunglass straps and hats that protect from the sun. If you forget, our basecamps offer these items in the retail areas where our white water rafting trips meet. Bring water for pre-rafting and post-rafting hydration. Remember, you’re in the Colorado Rockies, and it’s important to stay hydrated! We also suggest bringing cash to tip your guide. Check out our “ 10 Tips for White Water Rafting Beginners ” for more information!

This depends on what you’re interested in. If big, exciting water is what your group is looking for, then high-water season is the best time.  June is traditionally high-water season . When rivers run at their peak, it can make for a big ride. Keep in mind some sections may close due to high water conditions. Most people enjoy normal run off-season, which is mid-June to early August. The water stays consistent and the days tend to be sunny and warm with the occasional afternoon rain shower. Water levels and weather are very unpredictable, so book a date that best suits the group and be prepared for the unexpected.

We require full payment at the time of reservation and our cancellation policy differs, depending on whether or not you have purchased Worry-Free Cancellation plan . We highly recommend purchasing Worry-Free Cancellation plan , as it allows you the flexibility you many need. Please click here  to review our cancellation policy.

River and rapid classifications are another great way to determine the suitable age for a river trip  for your group. Remember that classification can change with weather and water conditions.

  • Beginner = first timers, young children
  • Intermediate = aggressive first timers, teens
  • Advanced = experienced paddlers looking for an adventure

This River Rapids Class Rating System is strictly a subjective scale. You can characterize a rapid by class or give a general class to a whole river even though it has several different classes of rapids within it. The class of a rapid or river can change at different water levels. The temperature of the water, the air temperature, the remoteness of the river, and the difficulty of a rescue can all influence the rapid’s class.

  • Class I – Easy. Small riffles. No significant waves or obstacles.
  • Class II – Novice. Moderate rapids with regular waves, small drops, clear passages and wide channels. Occasional maneuvering may be required.
  • Class III – Intermediate. Moderately difficult rapids with larger irregular waves, often narrow channels. Complex maneuvering to avoid obstacles required.
  • Class IV – Advanced. Intense, powerful rapids requiring precise maneuvering in fast, turbulent water. Complex channels with many significant obstacles to be avoided.
  • Class V – Expert. Extremely long violent or obstructed rapids, often following each other almost without interruption. Drops may have large, unavoidable waves and holes or steep, congested chutes with difficult routes. Steep gradient.
  • Class VI – Unrunnable.

Classifications of river sections may change due to water levels. For information to help you choose a trip, or for any questions you might have please, call  1-720-807-3250  and our office personnel will be happy to assist you in putting together a river experience. Or,  send us a message .

Cold weather gear is recommended and may be mandatory for some river adventures. Cold weather gear is not only for your comfort but also for your safety. Because of cold water and rocky river bottoms, wetsuits, footwear, and splash tops make a big difference. If you don’t have your own equipment, don’t worry; cold weather gear is available at all basecamp locations for a small rental fee.

We do not charge taxes on our services because we are not required to by law. We are, however, required to pay numerous fees to many local, regional and state organizations, including but not limited to the City of Idaho Springs, Clear Creek County, Division of Oil and Public Safety (OPS), Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado Department of Revenue and our property owner.

In addition to those fees, our booking software and credit card fees charge a large percentage of each transaction. When weather cancels events, we eat this cost. If weather is not the cancellation reason, however, we must charge the customer to recoup that cost.

In addition, we are a voluntary member of numerous local, state and national organizations that offer regulatory and strategic support to us as an outfitter. These membership costs are not included in our fees but they do provide additional layers of safety and professionalism that not all outfitters adhere to but we are committed to following. These include: Colorado River Outfitter’s Association (CROA), America Outdoors (AO), Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and more.

Why Go Rafting in Denver?

Denver is ideally located just 30 minutes away from your picture-perfect outdoor weekend adventure. Visitors can spend a day splashing through roaring rapids and still have time to return to Denver and relax, go brewery hopping, hit the spa, experience famous food halls, and soak up other aspects of city life — all in the same day.

Some of the most popular stretches of river are located a mere 30 miles from Denver. As you drive, you’ll love watching the cityscape of the metropolis transition into towering trees and majestic meadows. Rafting in Denver will take you through idyllic and picturesque canyons, past fascinating abandoned gold mines, and awesome wildlife in its natural habitat.

The Season for Rafting in Denver

Whitewater enthusiasts can bust out their paddles as soon as late April. American Adventure Expeditions starts guiding tours around that time. The season extends into late August. However, rafting season could start or end later depending on the snowmelt from winter. You can give us a call to quickly find out the approximate beginning and end of the season this year.

Fortunately, 2019 is looking like a fantastic season for adventurous rafting. We’re experiencing some of the best winter runoff water we’ve had in years, so you can count on this year’s rapids to give you the most excitement for your money!

Things to Bring on Your Rafting Trip

While whitewater rafting, you will get wet. Dress accordingly in quick-drying clothes or wear a swimming suit and bring a change of clothes and a towel for afterward. Avoid cotton clothing, as it’s the slowest to dry, and never wear flip flops (they’re too easy to lose in the river). Wear sunscreen and bring a hat and water bottle to avoid heat exhaustion while on the water; it will get hot! Sunglasses are also a good idea — just make sure they have a strap so you don’t lose them. If you bring loose items or valuables that you don’t want to bring on the raft, we provide lockers for your wallets, car keys, cell phones, and other such items.

Whitewater Rafting Near Denver

8 of the Best Rafting Trips Near Denver

Yampa River rafting in northeastern Colorado | Photo: Taylor Miller

The Top Colorado Rafting Trips from the Front Range

With 158 named rivers, over 100,000 river miles, and ecosystems ranging from high alpine to pine forest to sandy desert, Colorado has a lot to offer rafters. Whether you’re looking for a mellow, family-friendly float or an adrenaline-filled whitewater adventure, you don’t have to go far to access the fun—some of Colorado’s best rafting trips are within just a few hours of Denver. Whatever kind of rafting floats your boat, the Centennial State offers access to a stretch of river to match it.

Multi-Day Rafting Trips in Colorado

1) Yampa River through Dinosaur National Monument

Nearest Town: Elk Springs, CO

Best For: Famous rapids, spectacular campsites

The Yampa River has the distinction of being the largest free-flowing (undammed) tributary of the Colorado, making it perhaps the closest one can get to time-traveling to the era when dinosaurs roamed the earth. This trip combines stretches of relaxing flatwater with splashy wave trains and rapids—all of which can be easily scouted—and one trickster, the deceptively cozy-sounding Warm Springs, which is among the biggest whitewater drops in the U.S. The rapid didn’t exist until heavy flooding in 1965 distributed giant boulders across the river, so nature’s power is on full display here. The area’s human history leaves a lasting impression, too: OARS founder George Wendt witnessed (and managed to survive) the formation of the Warm Springs rapid, making for one epic adventure. There’s also older history in the canyon, from outlaws’ cabins to evidence of indigenous inhabitants to fossilized remains from millions of years ago. Below its confluence with the Green River, this trip shares the 26-mile stretch from Echo Park to Split Mountain with the Gates of Lodore run.

Green River through Gates of Lodore rafting.

2) Gates of Lodore | Green River

Nearest Town: Vernal, UT*

Best For: Extended wilderness experience; phenomenal scenery & side hikes

There’s nothing quite like waking up to the songs of canyon wren and sipping coffee as the sun begins to warm the soaring canyon walls. And on the Gates of Lodore stretch of the Green River through Dinosaur National Monument, that’s pretty much what’s on your docket—well, that and a few exciting rapids made famous by Major John Wesley Powell’s disastrous experience on his 1869 expedition. You’ll want to stretch the run out over as many days as possible to take full advantage of the ridiculously scenic campsites (often with access to side-canyon hikes), cattle-rustler camps, and even the occasional petroglyph or fossil. To minimize impact (and keep the canyons feeling like a wilderness experience), just 300 permits are issued for both the Green and Yampa runs through Dinosaur for launch dates between May 8 and September 8—so make friends with someone who’s feeling lucky, or sign on for a commercial trip and leave the permitting to the pros.

*While Vernal is the nearest actual town, this trip starts across the border in a remote area of western Colorado.

Rafting in Westwater Canyon under blue skies and white clouds

3) Ruby Horsethief & Westwater Canyon | Colorado River

Nearest Town: Fruita, CO

Ruby Horsethief and Westwater are often run together as part of a longer trip , but make no mistake—these runs each have their own distinct flavor.

Best For: Family-friendly float

Ruby Horsethief is largely flatwater, except at very high water, when big hydraulics form in the Black Rocks area. The float encompasses two canyons; Ruby is named for its red walls, while Horsethief earned its name on account of a former resident who reportedly purchased stolen horses in the safety of the remote canyon. When water levels are chugging along, the run can be done in a day, but it’s more fun to take the scenic route and make a long weekend of it. Camping is by permit at designated campsites only; there are 33 spacious sites between the put-in at Loma and the take-out at Westwater. This trip is ideal for families—it’s mellow enough that it’s often run on stand-up paddleboards, and many campsites offer extra perks like hiking from the Mee Canyon sites or rock-hopping at Black Rocks. The Utah-Colorado border is marked on a cliff on river right near the end of the run; it’s way more fun to enter a new state on the river than in a car.

Best For: Challenging whitewater in a remote setting

Westwater , which begins at the take-out for the Ruby Horsethief run, is a whole different beast. Its 11 named rapids vary from Class II to IV. The stretch offers unique challenges at any water level, and while it’s best run during the warmest time of the year (April to June, typically), the ancient Vishnu schist—only seen above ground here, in the Black Rocks section of Ruby Horsethief, and many miles downstream in the Grand Canyon—provides a shady respite from the heat.

Colorado Rafting Day Trips

A group of paddlers navigate rapids on a Browns Canyon rafting trip in Colorado.

4) Browns Canyon | Arkansas River

Nearest Town: Buena Vista, CO

Best For: Quintessential Colorado rafting experience; shortest drive from Denver area

Designated a national monument in 2015, breathtaking Browns Canyon stretches between Buena Vista (pronounce it BYOO-na VIST-a to sound like a local) and Salida—and it’s widely considered the best Class III run in the state. Rapid names like Pinball and Zoom Flume sum it up nicely: this is an exceptionally fun, family-friendly run. Its relatively high altitude (ranging from 7,300 to about 10,000 feet above sea level) and towering granite walls mean it’s home to wildlife unique to the mountain ecosystem; keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, bobcats, and pine marten. Browns itself makes for a perfect half-day trip, and the national monument designation means the stretch of Arkansas River through the canyon is quiet and roadless; the only sign of modern times is the railroad running along river left.

5) Royal Gorge | Arkansas River

Nearest Town: Cañon City, CO

Best For: Big water in a classic setting

For a thrilling introduction to Arkansas River paddling, look no further than the Royal Gorge, considered one of the finest whitewater runs in North America. It’s hard to believe something this close to the bustling city of Colorado Springs could feel so remote, but Class IV and V rapids have a way of taking center stage—and the plunging 1,200-foot walls, which occasionally narrow to less than 30 feet apart, don’t hurt, either. Elk and bighorn sheep are often spotted from the river; bald eagles occasionally soar overhead, along with the iconic Royal Gorge Bridge, which spans the canyon a dizzying 956 feet above the riverbed. For those who want to skip the biggest water, a half-day run through Bighorn Sheep Canyon (just upstream) means splashy Class III rapids and plenty of gorgeous scenery.

Colorado rafting day trip on the Arkansas River.

6) Pumphouse to State Bridge | Upper Colorado River

Nearest Town: Kremmling, CO

Best For: Easy logistics; a little something for everyone in your group

With abundant wildlife, soaring Rocky Mountain views, an easy-to-access hot spring, and a smattering of Class II and III rapids, “the Upper C,” as it’s affectionately known, has a lot to offer. Access the put-in for the run at Pumphouse, where there’s a developed campground. This also happens to be the take-out for Gore Canyon, one of the rowdiest continuous stretches of Class IV and V whitewater in the west—but from here to State Bridge, it’s smooth sailing. Shortly after getting on the water, you’ll enter a deep canyon, followed by one of just two significant rapids on this run, Eye of the Needle (at most water levels, it’s much more forgiving than its name implies). Stretches of flatwater make for great swimming on a hot day, and don’t miss Radium Hot Springs, an unmaintained pool about three miles downstream from Pumphouse on river left, which gives a perfect view of a popular cliff-jumping spot across the river.

7) Canyon Run | Clear Creek

Nearest Town: Idaho Springs, CO

Best For: Rowdy rapids less than an hour from Denver

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Clear Creek is by no means a wilderness experience. The upper runs, starting in Lawson, parallel Interstate 70; the “Canyon Run” or “Kermits,” as the most advanced section is often called, is never more than a stone’s throw from US Highway 6. But if it’s adrenaline-pumping whitewater and a classic “creeking” experience you’re after, this is it—and the roar of the rapids drowns out most of the traffic sounds, anyway. Known for its swift current, hyper-technical rapids, and incredibly narrow channels, this section of the Creek has nonstop action; it’s one Class IV rapid (often with sinister-sounding names, like Double Knife and Hell’s Half-Mile) after another for most of the six-ish-mile run. The upside of the frontcountry setting is that it’s incredibly convenient to get to the put-in or shop in Idaho Springs—just don’t let the proximity to the road trick you into thinking you’re not in for an adventure.

A group of rafters on the Cache La Poudre River near Denver.

8) Cache La Poudre River

Nearest Town: Fort Collins, CO

Best For: Wild, scenic, and super convenient

Colorado’s only nationally designated Wild & Scenic River is just a hop, skip, and a jump from Fort Collins, a quirky college town just north of Denver. The Cache La Poudre (locals pronounce it “CASH-ay la POOD-er”), often just called the Poudre, boasts rapids ranging from mellow class II to thrilling Class IV+, depending on the season. Swift, clear current, narrow channels, and far fewer boaters than many Colorado rivers make this feel like a wilderness experience, and the lush ponderosa forest—a far cry from the desert landscape you’ll find in the western part of the state—feels very classically Colorado. For a rowdy run, sign on for a Mishawaka trip; for a quieter experience, the Lower Canyon is where it’s at.

The Best Places for White Water Rafting Near Denver

Posted on 06/3/19

Whitewater rafting

The Colorado Rockies are a great destination location for Whitewater Rafting for people visiting from all over the world. There are rivers all over the state that have their own unique twist on a Colorado Rafting experience. Though the front range has a lot to offer for hotels, food, and other city conveniences, you should travel into the mountains in order to get on the best whitewater rafting trip. Lets go through a few options close to the front range, talk about their perks, and make sure that you pick the best whitewater rafting trip for you and your group!

Here is our list of the best places for whitewater rafting near Denver:

1.) Clear Creek – Idaho Springs, CO

Clear Creek is an icon of whitewater rafting in Colorado and where most people will raft when staying in Denver, CO. What makes this river so incredible is its diversity of difficulty levels, rich history, and accessibility.

Distance from Denver : Only about 30 minutes west of Denver, Clear Creek is a great option because of its proximity and flowing river that offers all levels of whitewater.

The Gold Rush: The mildest section of Clear Creek to run is between Chicago Creek and Kermit’s. Though a milder and shorter section this whitewater ride takes you through some of the most historic sections of Idaho Springs. Chicago creek is said to have held the first gold nugget found in the gold rush of Idaho Springs. This trip also takes you past the Argo gold mine – once the most profitable mine in the world. Finally, the take out at Kermit’s is near the dive bar, Kermit’s, which has one of the oldest pork green chili recipes in Colorado.

  • Kids: This is a great section to raft if you are going to have kids in your group. You need to be 6 years old or older to raft this section of the river.

Upper Clear Creek: If you are looking for a more intense whitewater experience, don’t worry, Clear Creek holds this as well. Travel a bit farther up river and run Upper Dumont to Satellite for a more thrilling class IV experience.

  • Thrill Seekers: This is a great section for those looking for a thrilling experience. You need to be 15 years old or older to raft this section.

The Lower Canyon: Not enough for you? Take on the treacherous lower canyon. This will put in at Kermits and take out just above Miles Gulch Park. This will involve intense class V whitewater.

  • Experienced Rafters: This is a great section for experienced rafters. You need to be 15 years old or older to raft this section of the river.

Clear Creek Canyon is our top place for whitewater rafting near Denver hands down.

Clear Creek is nestled in a Rocky Mountain valley, so you will have beautiful mountains surrounding you. Also, this trip is incredible convenient as it is right off the high way, but during most of the trip you cannot even tell you are off the highway. Once you’re done rafting, you are in the heart of a historic mining town with awesome shops, restaurants, and breweries.

2.) Cache la Poudre River – Fort Collins, CO

The Poudre river is a great destination location for people staying near Denver, CO. Fort Collins is just an hour and fifteen-minute drive from downtown Denver and offers an incredible experience for all levels of rafting experience.

Distance from Denver: 1 hour north of Denver, the Cache La Poudre is a great option for those looking for a scenic trip with fun whitewater.

Lower Poudre: The milder section of the river is known as the Lower Poudre. This offers a class II-III experience. This is the perfect half day activity for families looking for great views and great whitewater.

  • Families with kids: The Lower Poudre is a great section to raft if you have children in your group.

Wild and Scenic: The Poudre river is also one of the only “Wild and Scenic” sections of river in Colorado, describing the awesome scenery and wildlife the trip will hold.

  • Thrill seekers: This is perfect for those looking for a heart pumping experience.

Mishawaka Falls : If you are looking for a more thrilling section of whitewater near this area, try Mishawaka falls. This solid class IV will offer all the trills you are looking for, along with the gorgeous lower canyon views. Make sure to check out the Mishawaka amphitheater right off the side of the river. This amazing venue is a bucket list for show-lovers of all ages!

  • Thrill Seekers: Perfect for a group looking to raft class IV whitewater.

As we mentioned above, there will be not shortage of views during these trips. The Poudre is also nestled in between mountains and will take in incredible scenery as your wind through the valley. Once you’re done rafting, downtown Fort Collins is the perfect vacation town with walk-ability, music venues, restaurants and more!

3.) Colorado River – Kremmling, CO

Are you more of the chill type? Are you just looking to see more of Colorful Colorado’s views without unneeded stress? The Upper Colorado river is the river for you! Located about 2 hours from Denver and offering mild class II rapids and spectacular high-desert canon views, the Upper C is a destination for families, groups looking for a milder experience, or groups looking for one of the best overnight trips Colorado has to offer.

Distance from Denver: 2 hours northwest of Denver, the Upper Colorado is the perfect river that offers amazing views and runs all spring, summer and fall.

Trip Options:

Upper C Rafting: A half day experience would typically run between Pumphouse and Radium and gives you the opportunity to relax in the balmy radium hot springs, or maybe pump up your adrenaline with a cliff-jump. Looking for a longer experience? Try running between pumphouse and Rancho del rio. Even better, if you are looking for a three-day trip, you can run all the way down to State Bridge.

  • Families with children & those looking for a relaxing experience: This section is really fun and you will hit a few rapids but it is perfect for kids and those wanting to take in the scenery.

Stand Up Paddle Board: If you are looking for more of a challenge, then stand up paddle board is the perfect adventure for the Colorado river. Smaller rapids will give you a bit of a challenge while the mild river gives you a chance to take in the scenery and focus on your paddling.

  • Thrill Seekers: Stand Up Paddle Boarding down the Upper Colorado is the perfect combination of challenging, exciting, and fun.

Inflatable Kayaks: This is such a fun way to take on the Upper Colorado! Try your hand at kayaking but let the inflatable kayaks make your trip a bit less technical.

  • Thrill Seekers: Put your steering to the test and navigate the water in an inflatable kayak.

Another awesome option for whitewater rafting near Denver, Colorado!

In conclusion, if you are looking for a true Colorado Rafting experience, Idaho Spring’s historic rafting runs, the Poudre’s wild and scenic rapids, and the Colorado river’s relaxing and fun experience are all great options for you and your family. Learn more about rafting options near Denver , and don;t miss out on the adventure you won’t be able to stop talking about!

Next time you are in Denver, make sure you check out one of these whitewater rafting options for the trip of a lifetime.

Fishforadventures | september 2019.

This was our first time WWR and we’re so glad we went with Downstream Adventures. It was toward the end of the season and we were so thankful to still be able to do this. We still had the time of our lives. Kurt, our guide, was very knowledgeable and experienced at WWR. We felt prepared for what could happen and what we needed to do. I would highly recommend booking your next WWR at whatever level you want!

deansmith75126 | September 2019

The wife and I went on the INTERMEDIATE trip with Downstream Adventures in August. Office staff was great and efficient, our safety lecture was complete, and out guide Curt could not have been better. Since the water was rather low they took us on the ADVANCED portion of the river. It was great, class 3-4 rapids, stopped to eat wild raspberries – a great trip. We highly recommend Downstream Adventures for your Idaho Springs/Black Hawk area rafting trip on Clear Creek.

Steviesbff123 | August 2019

Had an amazing time!!! The tour guide was friendly, helpful, and made the trip full of fun, laughter, and memories! We were college kids trying to make the most of Colorado on a tight budget and this whitewater rafting tour was worth the money! Would recommend 100%!

Amanda A. | August 2019

The employees were all very nice and helpful. Our guide Russel was amazing, he definitely knew the waters and knew what he was doing. we were very inexperienced and we weren’t in sync paddling but he got us through it without anyone falling out. Will definitely go back!

jwp210 | November 2019

This is an extremely well-run outfitter! The office staff was knowledgeable and helpful, the guides were top-notch, and the river was really fun. Highly recommended!

Ohiotraveller43 | August 2019

This was our first time rafting and we had the best time!! Our guide Jonathan was awesome!! I’m not the most adventurous person and was super nervous but this was a perfect introduction, I’m ready to do it again!!!

N6624IQchrisc | May 2018

This was our first time rafting and the staff was really chill and made sure that safety was a top priority. Our guide was excellent and made sure we had a wonderful experience. Some friends and I were looking for whitewater rafting while on vacation in Colorado and decided to go with Downstream Adventures. This was our first time rafting and the staff was really chill and made sure that safety was a top priority. Our guide was excellent and made sure we had a wonderful experience.

rebeccacone | August 2019

I had read the reviews of others who claimed that they chose Downstream because it is smaller and you feel more connected. I couldn’t agree more. As we were getting on the creek, I could see another company getting ready to begin in about 30 minutes. They had a group of 60. I would not have liked that. I liked that Downstream ensures that you feel special and not one of a massive group. Would definitely choose them again.

Trescott H. | July 2017

Rafting with Downstream Adventures was just what the doctor ordered. We were in Denver for a gathering and a three hour float down the creek was perfect. The adventure was fun and close to Denver. Highly recommended for anyone looking to go rafting with a great company.

Cynthia Sue S. | September 2017

A great family adventure. The guide, Rusty, was funny, and well skilled, and safety was always a priority.

BigBearMatt | July 2017

Went with a big group of friends after a wedding, really big water this year. Guides took the time to educate and get a lot of the first timers comfortable. The guides were absolutely top notch. Safty kayaker was there for rescues and made everyone feel safe. Can’t thank the staff enough for such a good trip. Such a good experience with them, I wouldn’t go rafting with any other company. Don’t forget to tip your guides!!! They work hard to keep you safe and make sure you have a great time!! Can’t wait to go back!!!

dharinisn | 2017

We were a big group of 20 ppl with young children. Casey and Jordon were our guides for the intermediate and beginner level rafting and both were great. We had good fun!

Matt L. | July 2018

We wanted a rafting trip not too far from Denver. This venue offered an entertaining time with knowledgeable staff and good safety training. I enjoyed my time there and would go there again.

harrisf606 | 2017

We had a group of 24 kids and Downstream Adventures gave us the lowest price and a great whitewater rafting trip. The guides were great and the kids all had a good time. Highly recommended.

John H. | 2017

We have taken numerous rafting trips over a 25 year period. This was one of if not the best. Its a relatively quick trip, but there’s a lot of whitewater packed into two hours. Our guides, Casey and Jordan, made the trip really fun for our group of 12. The trip felt personalized and very different from some of the larger outfitters. We will be returning to run Clear Creek again with Downstream

Valerie G. | 2017

Our group of 12 – with 5 teenagers – had a great experience with Jordan and Casey. Half of us had never rafted before. They were knowledgeable, personable and great teachers. We definitely recommend Downstream!
