Zoom Focus X Laser Rangefinder Review

50 Words or Less

The Zoom Focus X rangefinder is a quick, compact laser rangefinder.  A rechargeable battery eliminates the need to carry a backup.

Introduction

We seem to have reached a point with laser rangefinders where there are no more major breakthroughs.  From slope to improved optics to speed, we’ve seen it all before.  The Zoom Focus X doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it offers many top of the line features – plus something unusual – at a very affordable price.

zoom focus tour laser rangefinder

Set Up & Ease of Use

The Zoom Focus X rangefinder is a s easy to use as any that I’ve tested .  Pushing the red button powers it up, another press gives you a yardage.  There is another button just in front of the red one that toggles the slope feature and also switches between yards and meters.  The Focus X displays thoughtful design – the slope button is set lower than the power button making button errors very rare.

zoom focus tour laser rangefinder

One unusual thing about the Focus X is that it’s powered by a rechargeable battery .  It charges through a micro USB port near the eyepiece.  My Focus X was ready to go right out the box, and I rang up over 200 yardages during my testing.  After all that, the low battery indicator did not appear, so it seems that one charge should be good for multiple rounds.

Zoom’s website does not indicate how long one charge should last or how long it takes to fully charge the battery.  I like the idea of a rechargeable battery, but I do wish that there was a battery life indicator on the Focus X rather than just a low battery indicator.

*UPDATE: Per Zoom, the battery should last 30 hours on a single charge.

Accuracy & Performance

As always, we’ll start with the most important piece: accuracy .  I tested the Zoom Focus X against several other top shelf rangefinders, and it performed very well .  Readings between the different units was always within one yard.

zoom focus tour laser rangefinder

The Focus X is also very quick .  With or without the slope adjustment turned on, yardages displayed the moment that my finger was off the power button.  I’ve tested units that are slightly quicker, but the difference between them is completely meaningless.

Another notable thing about the Focus X is its size.  While the size differences between rangefinders isn’t immense, the Focus X is one of the most compact units .  It’s also lighter – 178 grams vs the 256 grams of the Bushnell Pro X2 [review HERE ].

zoom focus tour laser rangefinder

The Zoom Focus X rangefinder retails for $200.  At that price, you get the laser, the charging cable, and the carrying case shown above.  This a very strong value, particularly given that you won’t have to buy expensive batteries.

zoom focus tour laser rangefinder

If you’re in the market for a compact rangefinder with speed and accuracy, the Zoom Focus X will fit the bill.  While I hope to see a battery life indicator in future versions, the fact that you’ll never have to track down a CR2 battery is an attractive feature.

Biggest failure is micro USB, come on, why not just use USB-C instead of something that is dated.

' src=

This is pretty much the exact range finder I’ve been waiting for.

' src=

I totally agree that we seem to have reached a point with laser rangefinders where there are no more major breakthroughs.

What I’d like to see is improvement on some of the existing features. Bushnell putting the magnet on the side so it sticks to the cart is a great feature. Why isn’t everyone else copying that? I have a Nikon and I bought a $10 rubber skin case and stuffed some magnets inside it to add that feature, but I’d love for that to be built in considering the price I paid.

I use a Nikon because of their stabilization feature and they use larger font which is easier for my aging eyes to read. Why does Bushnell insist on being so small on the font?

Just some examples of how a perfect rangefinder still doesn’t exist, even though it should by now…

Big Max Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder  Gunmetal

The Zoom Focus Tour is the new gold standard for premium Laser Rangefinder technology. The latest design from Zoom combines all the essential information a golfer could need with simple, intuitive operation in a very compact, elegant package. With market leading optics, the Focus Tour benefits from a crisp, bright display, vivid contrasts and a very wide field of view at 7.5 °. These features make target acquisition the most simple process, with even the longest distances picked up in less than half a second.

FLAG SCAN MODE

With the flag scan mode the Focus Tour picks up the flag with a simple horizontal movement. A vibration then provides immediate feedback upon target acquisition

SLOPE SWITCH

The slope mode takes into account any change in elevation to the flag. The unit will register the straight line distance to the flag, but also the Slope adjusted distance (how much to add on or take off for the slope), giving the ‘real’ length of the shot and informing the best club selection. For tournaments, the slope mode can be quickly turned off with the switch on the side.

ULTRA BRIGHT DISPLAY

The Focus Tour has a particularly bright display with vivid contrasts. Combined with an exceptionally wide field of view at 7.5 °, you always have a perfect view of the target.

  • Distance Range 800M
  • 7.5 Degree Field of View
  • 6x Magnification

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder Review

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder Review – Over the last few years we have seen a number of different brands, from Volvik to Callaway to Shot Scope, all attempting to break into the laser rangefinder market and knock Bushnell off their perch.

aac-table__image

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder

If you’re big on your golf equipment you’ll know that this is easier said than done, because there are a number of big players in this field who tend to dominate usage both with the professionals and amateurs.

One of the brands seeking to buck this trend is Zoom , from the same owners as Big Max (known for their trolleys and bags) who are back with their second golf laser – the Focus Tour.

What’s It All About?

The Focus Tour is Zoom’s premium model which features a simple, intuitive setup in a compact, classic design which looks to replicate the look and feel of an old-school camera.

The laser’s flag scan mode allows you to get a better idea of all of the obstacles that lie ahead of you, by scanning through the field of view to pick up the flag whilst providing measurements to other targets along the way without you needing to click the button every time.

When you lock onto the flag you should receive a reassuring vibration, letting you know that you have successfully acquired your target.

As with all good lasers these days, the slope switch technology accounts for any changes in elevation between you and the flag, and can be turned on and off depending on whether you are playing in a competition.

Zoom says that the display is particularly bright, with vivid contrasts. This combines with a 7.5° field of view to ensure that you always have a great view of the target ahead.

The hybrid metal finish features an ergonomic design which has been built to fit into the hand much more easily to make carrying and using the laser as enjoyable as possible.

Zoom are promising ‘Instant Target’ technology with the clear display and latest chip technology providing yardages in less than half a second, meaning that you can build the laser into your pre-shot routine without adding any more time.

The laser is said to be accurate up to distance of 800m, thanks to a 6x magnification on the clear display which should have you covered on even the longest of holes out on the course, regardless of how far offline you hit it!

Looks and Feel

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder – In my opinion, the Focus Tour provides a much more premium look than the Focus X that I reviewed last summer, which felt a little more of an ‘entry-level’ laser for golfers who are new to the game or on a tighter budget. In comparison, I thought the Focus Tour laser looked great.

The laser weighs in at 210g and this gives it a nice solid feel in your hands, and it couples well with Zoom’s ergonomic handle which means that you can use this one-handed if you’d like to. One thing that I don’t like about some newer lasers to the market is how lightweight they are, this wasn’t the case here.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder – As you’d expect you also get the usual premium carry case and clip which means that you can attach the laser to your golf bag, trolley or even your belt if you want to make the process as fast as possible.

In addition there’s a handy battery life indicator displayed on the screen too, which should let you know when you’re close to running out of juice. There’s nothing worse than taking out your rangefinder on the first approach shot of the day, only to find that it has died and you’re going to have to guess the yardages to the pin for the rest of the round… not fun!

Performance

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder – The laser was very simple to use, with the slope switch button on one side and just two main buttons on top – one to turn the device on and find the target, and the other to change mode and switch between yards and metres.

The laser’s display gives you a clear sight target in the centre of the screen, whilst icons on the side indicate which mode you are currently in.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder – With the slope mode on, I like the fact that the true yardage and slope-adjusted yardage are displayed in the optics along with the elevation percentage this shows.

I think that this is a great idea for improving your knowledge on how severe certain slopes will be and is also useful during competitions when you’ll have slope mode turned off as you can start to learn some of the key elevation changes at your home course.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder Review- The slope mode was in full effect during my testing at JCB Golf and Country Club on the 17th tee, the signature hole which plays severely downhill.

Club selection is vital here and the laser worked well as I managed to successfully hit the green. Unfortunately, it wasn’t able to help me avoid 3-putting though…

I found the scan mode to be a little temperamental at times, as it seemed to work really well on some holes and then struggled to pick targets up on others, on the whole I didn’t find it to work that well.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder – In the end though, I didn’t find this to be too much of an issue as the device is easy enough to use quickly and accurately so I didn’t often find that I was actually requiring the scan mode in favour of just the standard way of measuring. In all honesty i found it to be a bit of a pointless feature.

The only true complaint I could really have with the laser was that the optics could’ve been clearer – I found that the size of the numbers and symbols was just a little small and the black text was quite hard to pick up at times depending on lighting, particularly if there were obstacles in the background when trying to get your yardages.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder Review – I like to think that my eyesight is pretty good but for those who wear glasses or may struggle with reading small text, this could end up being a real issue some at times. You could give a rangefinder all the best features in the world, but if the optics aren’t spot on, it’s going to struggle to outperform the big boys.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder Verdict

Overall I found Zoom’s Focus Tour to be a good, solid rangefinder which looks really smart and is simple and fast to use. It is the brand’s flagship model and I’d definitely agree that it is a improvement from their initial Focus X model in terms of overall quality, but maybe not in value for money.

Zoom Focus Tour Rangefinder Review – Bushnell are regarded as the benchmark when it comes to lasers, and the Tour V5 Shift is around £100 more than the Focus Tour, so you will have to decide how much you are willing to spend to get the most quality for your game.

In my opinion, due to the optics and view through the rangefinder itself, I found the performance of this to not be on the same level as a Bushnell in terms of speed and accuracy. Having said that, if you’re on a budget and are looking for a laser which looks and feels premium and has all the features a golfer could wish for, then the Zoom Focus Tour could be a very viable option and worth adding to your short-list.

  • Premium looks and feel
  • Very easy to use
  • Decent value for a flagship model
  • Better quality than the Focus X rangefinder
  • Optics could’ve been clearer
  • May still struggle to compete with the bigger brands

Zoom Focus S Golf Rangefinder Review: pin-point accurate, quick and easy to use

GolfMagic Equipment Editor Alex Lodge assessed the performance of the Zoom Focus S Golf Rangefinder, one of the more affordable products in this market.

zoom focus tour laser rangefinder

Zoom has released a brand new golf rangefinder in the Focus S and it is without doubt the brand's most impressive product yet.

Following in the footsteps of its elder brother, the equally impressive Focus X , the main difference with the Focus S for 2022 is a much sleeker design.

It's also a little cheaper than before at £199 as opposed to £220, which instantly adds more appeal. Of the standout features of this premium golf rangefinder, the ergonomic design fits perfectly and comfortably in the palm of the hand.

Also Read: Best golf rangefinder

As much as the older Zoom Focus Tour is a better and larger design, the Focus S model is a very impressive and affordable option which gives accurate yardages that compete with the Bushnell Tour V5.

GolfMagic Equipment Editor Alex Lodge assessed the performance of the Zoom Focus S golf rangefinder over a number of rounds to discover how it benefitted his performance.

WATCH OUR ZOOM FOCUS S GOLF RANGEFINDER REVIEW BELOW

What is the Zoom Focus S Golf Rangefinder all about?

Crystal-clear optics lead the way in this stylish new design, with a super wide 7° field of vision, 6x magnification, ultra-bright LCD display and an adjustable eyepiece to cater for golfers with different levels of vision.

The premium optics combine with a host of practical features to make a golfer's life on the course easier such as vibration feedback, slope mode, flag scan mode and continuous measurement for scanning the course.

Flag scan mode is the feature which utilises vibration feedback. When you successfully pick up your target, the golf rangefinder will buzz and you are ready to go.

Zoom Focus S Golf Rangefinder Review: pin-point accurate, quick and easy to use

This product is approved for tournament play when the slope function is switched off. It is available in black/silver and black colourways, as you can check out online.

Zoom has also brought back one of its most popular features from the Focus X with a micro USB rechargeable battery that lasts over 50 rounds on one full charge.

At just 170g and with an ergonomic design that fits perfectly in the hand, the Focus S is a dream to use on the course. Each unit comes with a protective carry case that includes a carabiner so that it can hang from a golf bag, and a bungee attachment for quick, easy access.

Zoom Focus S Golf Rangefinder Review: pin-point accurate, quick and easy to use

These neat features mean the new Focus S is a practical addition to a golfer's gear both when it's needed and when it isn't. This impressive unit does everything a golfer needs and nothing less, in a stylish, practical package.

Without question one of the best golf rangefinders on the market right now. While some £20 less than its predecessor, it does everything you could possibly wish for and it's highly accurate. It's light, comfortable in the hand and just so easy to operate out on the golf course.

We also found the yardages were consistently solid during the round with the ability to lock in on the flag a big bonus as it avoided picking out one of the trees beyond the green.

Some players out there consider golf rangefinders to contribute to slow play, but with the Focus S you are wasting little time in locking down your yardage so there is no danger of that happening.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

Dan Box

Affordable rangefinders are becoming more and more prevalent in the golf equipment world. The introduction of top-quality GPS apps and devices, which are reasonably priced, has led to golfers realising they don't have to spend hundreds of pounds on lasers which are very useful in some aspects, whilst also being limited in others.

Over the last twelve months, we at Golfalot have seen the likes of GolfBuddy and Volvik demonstrate exactly that - by producing lasers which perform brilliantly without breaking the bank.

The next brand to come onto our radar is Zoom, who are owned by the same company as Big Max, and have marked their foray into the European golf technology market with their first model - the Focus X.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

We love trying out new or previously unheard of brands, particularly when they enter into a competitive and growing market, such as mid-level lasers, and threaten to try and knock some of the bigger names off their perch.

Let's find out more about the new Focus X....

What's It All About?

The Focus X has 6x magnification, a 600m range and flagpole scanning so that you can pick up your desired target. A flagpole icon then appears and the device vibrates, giving you extra confidence of the yardage you're seeing.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

Distances are available in both metres and yards, are accurate to 0.5m and shown in an easy-to-read format. There's an adjustable eyepiece so that you can properly focus on the target regardless of whether you are wearing glasses, and allows for adjustment to individual preference.

There's also a Slope adjustment feature, a must-have for premium rangefinders these days, which shows compensated yardages depending on the elevation to the target. As with most rangefinders, this feature can be turned on and off, so that it is suitable for tournament use.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

The Focus X features a rechargeable lithium battery that has an automatic cut off after 8 seconds of non-use. There's also a low battery indicator which lets you know when it's time to recharge.

It's very simple stuff but how did it perform out on the golf course?

The Focus X looks and feels like a premium product straight out of the box, with the smart protective carry case, sleek design and simple, intuitive setup.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

When you first use the laser you will notice that the default setting is in metres, so if you play in the UK or USA, for example, you'll have to make sure you switch over to yards to avoid flying the green with every iron approach. This can be done by holding down the Slope button for about a second. It's switches over seamlessly with no fuss.

You will probably need to adjust the lens focus too as it does seem to vary quite a bit between different people, so make sure that you get it set to your preference. It also seemed a little sensitive too so it may just take a little bit of fiddling to find the right setting for you.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

Once that is sorted though, you get a pretty good-looking display through the viewfinder, which features an aiming sight, true yardage and playing yardage. I tested the laser early in the morning when the sun was quite low and so there was a little bit of glare, but on the whole I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to read considering that the font was quite small and narrow.

One feature that I did like was that when Slope mode was on, the laser actually showed you at the bottom of the screen how many degrees uphill or downhill the shot was playing. This could be a useful feature for those of you who are serious about your preparation and pay close attention to detail, as you could start to work out for yourself what kind of gradient levels you are seeing so that when you have slope mode turned off in competitions, your guesswork should be a little more accurate.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

The slope mode is toggled on or off by simply pressing the button on top of the device, which is easy enough to use but isn't exactly visible to your playing partners. The likes of Bushnell and GolfBuddy have switches on the side of the device so that everyone can see you're not bending the rules during your competition rounds, so with the Zoom you'll just have to be honest!

Overall the Focus X is quick and easy to use. You get a nice little buzz when the device finds a target, and the Pin finder function seemed to work on most flags despite the fact that the lighting I was testing in made things a little tricky.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

After your round you can put the Focus X back on charge to save having to replace batteries and avoid that nightmare scenario where you arrive at the first tee only to realise your laser has died.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

There's a handy battery indicator which will display when the charge is beginning to get low, so that you can top it back up before your next round.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Verdict

The overall quality of rangefinders is so good these days that it really becomes evident when you are using one which isn't great. However I was really impressed with the Zoom Focus X as it looked, felt and performed just like any of the other more established names in this market.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

In previous years, golfers would naturally gravitate towards brands such as Bushnell, Nikon and perhaps Garmin because they were market leaders and wanted to make sure that they got a product that they could rely upon. But the Focus X is coming it at around half the price of these top-level models, and it does everything you would really need from a laser.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

If you like to go with the big brands and want a little more premium finish with all the bells and whistles, then you can still go for the likes of a Bushnell and you won't be disappointed.

But if all you after looking for is a simple, easy and strong-performing option that doesn't break the bank then more and more of these are becoming available, and the Zoom Focus X is definitely one is worth considering.

Would I Use It?

Definitely. I think all golfers should use some sort of laser or GPS device on the course as it is proven to save you shots every round, and the Zoom Focus X is an excellent affordable option. There is new kid on the block and I can imagine it sticking around for a little while.

Zoom Focus X Rangefinder Review

Smart-looking - easy to hold and use

Slope mode is a must-have

Pin vibrate a handy tool

Rechargeable which is a great bonus feature

Feels like good quality including carry case

Slope mode could be more obvious (e.g. for competition mode)

Lens focus seemed a little sensitive

  • Description

The ZOOM Focus Tour is the new gold standard for premium Laser Rangefinder technology.

The latest design from ZOOM combines all the essential information a golfer could need with simple, intuitive operation in a very compact, elegant package. With market leading optics, the Focus Tour benefits from a crisp, bright display, vivid contrasts and a very wide field of view at 7.5 °. These features make target acquisition the most simple process, with even the longest distances picked up in less than half a second.

With the flag scan mode the Focus Tour picks up the flag with a simple horizontal movement. A vibration then provides immediate feedback upon target acquisition.

Th e Focus Tour has a particularly bright display with vivid contrasts. Combined with an exceptionally wide field of view at 7.5 °, you always have a perfect view of the target.

The ZOOM Focus Tour wraps the latest technology in a timeless premium package. Thanks to its ergonomic design, Focus Tour sits perfectly in the hand, while the combination of premium materials gives the device a touch of timeless luxury.

Zoom Focus Tour Laser Rangefinder

The Zoom Focus Tour Laser Rangefinder is one of the products featured in our Editor's Choice product list in 2021.

Zoom is a brand that is making big strides in the laser rangefinder category, and in the  Focus Tour , you have one of the most cutting-edge models on the market.

It’s the follow up to the Focus X , and there’s plenty to like about the new flagship device.

Giving The ‘Real’ Distance

There are a number of features that stand out, the first of which is Slope functionality.

Get the Golf Monthly Newsletter

Subscribe to the Golf Monthly newsletter to stay up to date with all the latest tour news, equipment news, reviews, head-to-heads and buyer’s guides from our team of experienced experts.

S electing the right club is not always an easy task when you have to take into account changes in elevation, but this feature, which can be easily switched off during tournament play, can dramatically improve your approach play and proximity to the hole by giving you the ‘real’ length of shot.

This laser can also prove a huge help off the tee, especially given the wide field of view at 7.5 degrees, which assists in picking out hazards, including those you may not otherwise have spotted. In short, it gives you a better chance of staying clear of danger and shooting lower scores.

We were also impressed with how quickly the Focus Tour found the target, which is an area where some lasers haven’t always performed.

In less than half a second, a vibration confirms that the target is acquired – that number is crystal clear in the display, and you’re ready to fire away.

Elegant Design

It’s one thing having the clever technology, it’s another putting it together in a user-friendly and stylish package – but the Zoom Focus Tour also passes this test with flying colours.

The premium look won’t save you shots like its features can, but it does add to its appeal.

Thanks to its ergonomic design, it sits perfectly in the hand, and its weighted nicely so the user can lock in on a target without being affected by any wind.
