The biggest thing about the 6.0s that will help you in reliability is become familiar with the newer diesels. The 6.0 has the least amount of "new" tech and it's only going to get worse with later engines. I still maintain the belief that the worst enemy with the 6.0 is ignorance. Either owner or tech. 6.0 vs 7.3 in an Excursion
Generally, the 7.3 is considered a better hauler and the 6.0 a better motor for around town driving. The 6.0 feels more like a gasser. Later 6.0s are usually fine once you've done the required 'fixes' but I'd stay away from early models. The 7.3 responds very well to mods but the 6.0 is better if left fairly stock.

EGR Cooler Failure. Oil Cooler Failure. Clogged EGR Valves. FICM Issues. Fuel Injectors. VGT Turbo Problems. Blown Head Gaskets. The main problem with the 6.0 Powerstroke is that a lot of the problems on this list are major, or expensive problems to repair. Overall, the engine falls pretty low down on the list of reliable diesels.
Necessary upgrades for 6.0 Excursion
Here are my upgrades. 1- longer wiper blades 2- EGR delete & new oil cooler x2 (1st cooler was Ebay junk) & coolant filter 3- Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks on all four corners 4- SCT Live wire tuner with a EGT probe 5- new exhaust from down pipe back with new muffler but no cat.
6.0 in an Excursion
I had a 7.3 and 6.0 excursion, and I would reccomend the 6.0, as long as you do the maintence. the 6.0 has more power. The 6.0 gets better fuel mileage than the 7.3. My 7.3 never got above 15 mpg on the hwy, and the 6.0 gets on the avg of 17.5. The 7.3 was in the excursion from 2000-2002 and the 6.0 was 2003-2005.
DTC P0403 On 6.0 Powerstroke: Diagnosis and Fixing Process
The P0403 is usually associated with issues with the control circuit, the EGR valve, and the solenoid. An issue with these components will lead to the DTC P0403 code being returned. 6.0 stalls out while driving
2005 6.0 295,000 miles. Driving home the other day my truck started to stall out on the highway, it turned back on after letting it sit for a few minutes and after driving it would continue to stall out every mile or so. I got it to a mechanic the next day and he hooked it up to a code reader and said I had a bad glow plug module.
FICM issues and U0105 Code
While Cranking. FICM logic Voltage = 12.5. FICM Voltage = 47.5V. FICM Sync = 1. Codes: U-0105 Lost Communication with FICM. P-1378 FICM System Voltage Low (only got this on once, it cleared and hasnt come back) Also, I swapped my FICM out with a known good one and the truck ran fine around the block.
