  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: how to watch, episodes and everything we know

Where are Captain Pike and the Starship Enterprise crew boldly going next?

Anson Mount in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many Paramount Plus entries in the streaming service's expansive Star Trek universe. Other Star Trek shows on the streaming service include Star Trek: Discovery , Picard , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Prodigy .

Following the success of Star Trek: Discovery and the popularity among Trekkies of a certain Captain Pike (though we suspect actor Anson Mount’s jawline has much to do with it), the Star Trek studio finally gave in to fan demand and greenlit this latest spin-off.

Strange New Worlds has now completed its initial mission (season), but here's everything you need to know about the new series? Hit it.

How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

All episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US and UK. The Paramount Plus original series is available to all subscribers to the streaming service, whether they are signed up for the ad-supported or ad-free version.

When is the next Star Trek: Strange New World episode?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode 10, the season 1 finale, debuts on Paramount Plus in the US on July 7.

For UK Paramount Plus subscribers, episode 5 is now available on the streaming service.

Other Star Trek shows like Star Trek: Discovery ’s fourth season , are moving from their original UK home on Netflix to Paramount Plus.

They try to re-route the comet, only to find that an ancient alien relic buried on the comet’s icy surface is somehow stopping them. As the away team try to unlock the relic’s secrets, Pike and Number One deal with a group of zealots who want to prevent the  U.S.S. Enterprise  from interfering."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 3, "Ghosts of Illyria" "The  U.S.S. Enterprise  encounters a contagion that ravages the ship. In this episodes, Star Trek fans were re-introduced to an iconic villain .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 9, "All Those Who Wander" "The  U.S.S. Enterprise  crew comes face-to-face with their demons – and scary monsters too – when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 10, "A Quality of Mercy" "In the season one finale, just as Captain Pike thinks he’s figured out how to escape his fate, he’s visited by his future self, who shows him the consequences of his actions."

Will there be a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?

Affirmative. In January 2022, five months before season 1 had even aired, Paramount confirmed a season 2 was going ahead. Only a few months later they assigned their Captain Kirk ( The Vampire Diaries ’ Paul Wesley) and began shooting.

We don't know yet when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is going to premiere on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds plot

While Strange New Worlds is an all new adventure in the Star Trek universe for the uninitiated (unlike Picard for example), there’s a bit of background it’s good to be aware of. The show’s main man, Captain Pike, was Star Trek ’s very first captain, appearing in a long-unseen pilot episode of The Original Series entitled "The Cage" (the episode finished filming in 1965 but was not seen by audiences until 1986, via home video) set in the year 2254.

William Shatner’s iconic Captain James T. Kirk then took over, with Pike (having suffered a debilitating accident) popping up again mid-way through season 1 for a farewell double-bill appearance. Shenanigans with fan favorite Lieutenant Spock ensue, leaving Pike to live out a pain-free life on the planet Talos IV from the year 2267 onwards.

How is this relevant? Well, Strange New Worlds takes place in the years between Pike’s adventures in Discovery ’s second season, circa 2257, and his final days in The Original Series , so there’s a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of precedent, which we think bodes well for some out-of-the-borg-cube thinking.

Series co-creator Akiva Goldsman confirmed Strange New Worlds will take on a near-fully episodic approach (heads up The Next Generation and Voyager fans), confirming there will be, "room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures." The one thing that will break the episodic structure? Character arcs.

Star Trek

The poster and trailer show Pike’s transition from his idyllic home in the Mojave desert to the bridge of the Enterprise. We know his two trusty subordinates from Discovery — Science Officer Spock and First Officer 'Number One' (real name Una Chin-Riley) — will be by his side.

Some iconic legacy characters return here too, including Nurse Chapel, who assisted Dr. McCoy in The Original Series sickbay and Nyota Uhura (famously played by Nichelle Nichols in The Original Series and Thandi Newton in the alternate timeline movies of 2009, 2013 and 2016).

There’s also a new addition we’re particularly excited about, Chief of Security La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname will trigger Trekkie memories of Ceti eels (think hard-skinned killer leeches) and one of the best space showdowns in Star Trek — perhaps even sci-fi film — history. Whether or not she’s related to Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically-engineered superhuman and the show’s most memorable villain, is yet to be seen, but it’s certainly a thrilling prospect (for the avoidance of doubt, we’re referring to Khan in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan , not the alternate timeline Khan of Star Trek Into Darkness ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

The headline cast here remain those from Discovery , namely Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn as Pike, Spock and Number One. Jess Bush plays Nurse Christine Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding takes on Cadet Nyota Uhura and Christina Chong plays La’an Noonien-Singh. Pilot Lt. Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia and sickbay is manned by Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga. Bruce Horak will feature as a recurring guest star as Andorian officer Hemmer.

Is there a trailer?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2

The adventures of the USS Enterprise didn’t start with James T Kirk. Star Trek : Strange New Worlds is set around a decade before he embarked on the most famous five-year mission in TV history, and puts his predecessor – Christopher Pike – back in the captain’s chair.

Pike first appeared in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’ back in 1966, but it was his comeback in Star Trek: Discovery’s second season (where he was played by Anson Mount) that earned him his own spin-off show. Pike and fellow ‘Cage’ veterans Number One (played by Rebecca Romijn) and Spock (Ethan Peck inheriting the role made famous by Leonard Nimoy) proved so popular with fans that Paramount Plus decided to make Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the latest addition to Trek’s rapidly expanding shared universe .

And when it launches later this year, the show will feature a few more iconic names from the ’60s, including Nurse Chapel, Dr M’Benga and a genuine Trek legend in the form of Uhura. There’s also a mysterious crew member called La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname has a special resonance for fans of the final frontier.

With producers promising less serialized storytelling than Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds looks set to get back to the cosmos-exploring traditions of the Original Series and The Next Generation. Here’s everything we know so far – hit it!

What is it? A Star Trek: Discovery spin-off following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike, science officer Spock and first officer Una Chin-Riley (better known as Number One) on the USS Enterprise, around a decade before James T Kirk takes command.

Release date: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will beam onto Paramount Plus on May 5, 2022 – after Star Trek: Discovery season 4 and Star Trek: Picard season 2 have finished boldly going.

Cast: Alongside its familiar trio of lead characters (still played by Discovery's Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn), six new crew members will be taking their places on the Enterprise bridge. Read more about them below.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release date

Star trek: strange new worlds release date: may 2022.

It's so long ago that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds got its greenlight (May 2020) that Paramount Plus was still known as CBS All Access at the time.

Unfortunately, coronavirus significantly delayed its departure from Spacedock, and the show didn't make it in front of the cameras until March 2021. Production on Strange New Worlds' 10-episode first season eventually wrapped in October 2021, as confirmed in a video announcement from star Anson Mount:

Now the wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is almost over. StarTrek.com confirmed on January 18, 2022 that the new voyages of the USS Enterprise will boldly go onto Paramount Plus in the US on Thursday May 5, 2022 – coinciding with the conclusion of Starfleet stablemate Picard's second season.

Jess Bush, who'll play Nurse Christine Chapel in the show, celebrated the announcement by posing in one of the Enterprise's Jefferies Tubes with co-star Christina Chong (La'an Noonien-Singh).

While we know Strange New Worlds will stream on Paramount Plus in the US, it may vary depending on where you are. The streamer is set to launch in the UK in 2022, and we'd expect to see Strange New Worlds debuting on there – especially after the recent controversial announcement that Discovery's fourth season has been shifted from its traditional international home on Netflix, to help launch Paramount Plus around the world.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer

Is there a star trek: strange new worlds trailer.

There's no sign as yet, but with less than three months until the series' launch, it can't be long until we get to see a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer. Indeed, with Star Trek: Discovery returning from its mid-season break and Picard's second season kicking off in early March, Paramount have a pair of tentpoles they can hang a promo off.

That said, journalists at the show's Television Critics Association panel on February 1, 2022 were treated to first-look footage focussing on Cadet Nyota Uhura (played by Celia Rose Gooding), the character made famous by Nichelle Nichols in the Original Series. Den of Geek reported that most of the bridge crew were also accounted for in the clip.

Back in September 2021, the Star Trek Day event also unveiled a brief teaser introducing the cast. It contains a few stills from the new series, including a glimpse at the new-look USS Enterprise uniforms – a modern riff on the classic gold, blue and uniforms we saw in ’The Cage’ and the original series.

Going back even further in time, leads Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn beamed in an announcement video in May 2020:

As you’d expect, the party line was very much that the show exists because of fan demand. “Without you this wouldn’t be happening,” says Peck, while Mount explains a bit about the tone of the series. “[It’s] a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster: the frontier is waiting

While Paramount are keeping us waiting for a trailer, the tantalizing new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster is doing more than enough to get us excited about the show. It features Captain Pike on horseback in what looks like his home in the Mojave desert – but the real excitement comes from what's in the sky above him. The iconic USS Enterprise is hovering in front of a pair of alien worlds – and, no doubt, several new life forms and new civilizations.

If the "The frontier is waiting" tagline isn't enough to get Trek fans firing up their warp drives, chances are nothing will.

A post shared by Star Trek (@startrek) A photo posted by on

“We wanted [the poster] to reflect that the [concept] of the final frontier is at just the beginning,” executive producer (and Star Trek's de facto commander-in-chief) Alex Kurtzman told the show's TCA panel (via Syfy ) . “We think it brings the sense of nostalgia hope, optimism, exploration and sense of adventure."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

Star trek: strange new worlds cast: who’s beaming onto the enterprise bridge.

The principal Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast looks like this:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Mr Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Melissa Navia as Lt Erica Ortegas
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr M'Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Hemmer

Ever since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was confirmed in 2020, we've known that three actors would be reprising their roles from Discovery.

Anson Mount is back in the captain’s chair as Captain Christopher Pike. Meanwhile, after proving himself worthy of donning the pointy ears that once belonged to Leonard Nimoy, Ethan Peck returns as Spock. Rebecca Romijn continues as first officer/helmsperson Number One.

A ‘start of production’ video released in March 2021 introduced five other members of the cast:

The five new additions to the USS Enterprise bridge crew are Melissa Navia (from Dietland), Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill), Christina Chong (Doctor Who, Line of Duty), Babs Olusanmokun (Black Mirror), and Jess Bush (Skinford).

At the Star Trek Day panel in September 2021, it was finally confirmed who each of them would be playing.  We also learned that the full name of Number One is Una Chin-Riley – the first time this has been confirmed in the character’s 56-year history.

Intriguingly, three of the new cast members are playing characters who – like, Pike, Number One and Spock – were first established in the 1960s.

The most famous of these roles goes to Celia Rose Gooding, who plays a younger version of Nyota Uhura, the Enterprise communications officer famously portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in the original series and first six Star Trek movies. (Guardians of the Galaxy's Zoe Saldana took on the role in JJ Abrams' rebooted Trek.)

Gooding explained to the assembled journalists at the TCA event in February 2021 that this will be a much less experienced version of the communications officer we saw serving alongside Captain Kirk in the Original series.

“Nichelle had a level of understanding and clarity [in her portrayal], but we're showing different parts of her humanity, which isn't as sure and asks questions as we go along,” the actress explained. “Getting to represent an iconic character in a multi-faceted way is an honor and now we're getting to see other sides of Uhura that go outside of the limitations set for Black women in the '60s."

Babs Olusanmokun plays Dr M'Benga (originally played by Booker Bradshaw), a character who filled in as the Enterprise's chief medical officer when Dr McCoy was absent in the original series. Jess Bush, meanwhile, inherits the role of Nurse Christine Chapel, who worked alongside McCoy in the Enterprise Sick Bay.

Chapel is one of two Strange New Worlds characters who were originally played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry back in the 1960s – the other is Number One, who made her one-and-only vintage Trek appearance in 'The Cage'. (Barrett-Roddenberry also went on to play Lwaxana Troi and voice the Enterprise computers in The Next Generation.)

Of the Starfleet newbies, Bruce Horak's Hemmer is a member of the Andorian species. The fact he's wearing a red shirt – aka Star Trek's sartorial kiss of death – doesn't bode well for his life expectancy. The same could be said for Melissa Navia's Lt Erica Ortegas.

The most mysterious addition to the cast, however, is Christina Chong's La'an Noonien-Singh. The fact she shares a surname with The Wrath of Khan's Big Bad can't be a coincidence, but seeing as Trek canon tells us the cryogenically frozen 20th century villain won't be thawed out until after Kirk has taken command of the Enterprise, it's unclear how they're linked – but there definitely is a connection.

"She's related to Khan for sure, and, uh, the deal will unfold...” co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman confirmed at a Television Critics Association panel in February 2022 (via the Hollywood Reporter ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds already has its first great mystery...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds story

What can we expect to see in the star trek: strange new worlds story.

Star Trek: Discovery spoilers ahead – proceed with caution if you haven't seen season 2.

Pike, Spock and Number One have been part of the Star Trek story even longer than James T Kirk – they were on board the Enterprise in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’, unaired in the ’60s and set more than a decade before Kirk’s famous five-year mission. Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett originated the three roles.

While we know that the trio have been together at least three years by the time Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off and that a tragic fate awaits Pike – more on that later – most of their voyages remain undocumented. That means it’s prime storytelling territory and – after the more serialized Discovery and Picard – a chance for Trek to get back to the standalone stories of its earlier years.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” executive producer Akiva Goldsman (and director of the Strange New Worlds pilot episode) told Variety in May 2020. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.”

The ability to visit a huge galaxy of, well, strange new worlds, should allow the show to feel different from week to week – after all, this versatile formula is a big reason for the franchise’s longevity.

“We want to do Star Trek in the classic mode; Star Trek in the way Star Trek stories were always told,” fellow EP Henry Alonso Myers said at a Star Trek Day panel (via TrekMovie ). “It's a ship and it's traveling to strange new worlds and we are going to tell big ideas science fiction adventures in an episodic mode. So we have room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures..."

Strange New Worlds won't be entirely devoid of serialization, however, as writer Akela Cooper explained: “While we'll have individual one-off plots, the character arcs are what's going to carry us through in a more serialized fashion. There's probably one point that we will be sprinkling through this series until we actually get to the episode. And that's all I can say about that.”

Goldsman explained a bit more about the structure of the show in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in April: “If you think back to the original [Star Trek] series, it was tonally more liberal – I don‘t mean in terms of politics but it could sort of be more fluid. Like sometimes Robert Bloch would write a horror episode. Or Harlan Ellison would have ‘City on the Edge of Forever’, which is hard sci-fi. Then there would be comedic episodes like 'Shore Leave’ or ‘The Trouble with Tribbles’. So [co-showrunner] Henry Alonso Myers and myself are trying to serve that. We’ve all become very enamored, myself included, with serialized storytelling. Picard is deeply serialized but Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week, but with serialized character arcs.”

Strange New Worlds

Going on Mount’s performance in Discovery, Pike is the ideal captain for an optimistic mission of exploration.

“The writers have done a magnificent job of establishing this captain as his own iteration of what a Starfleet captain should be, independent of other captains in canon,” the actor said at the TCA panel (as reported by Syfy ). “Humility is a big part of his character. And his father was a science teacher and scholar of comparative religion, so exploration is a big part of Pike. He’s looking at the things that made us see what’s next over the horizon? Are we searchers or conquerors?”

We can also expect to see a Spock more prone to displays of emotion than his Original Series counterpart, as the younger version of the character struggles to balance his logical Vulcan side with his human urges.

Indeed, in ‘The Cage’, Number One was the more buttoned-up, logical member of the crew – her personality traits passing to the Vulcan when Star Trek went to series. “She's way more complex than y'all know,” actor Rebecca Romijn teased in the cast introduction video released on Star Trek Day, and she expanded on the theme in the panel.

“'The Cage' being such an old pilot, the writers have this very unique opportunity where they've had this character that's existed since the beginning of the canon, but she's never been written,” Romijn pointed out. “I can't wait to find out how vast her skill set is. What are the arrows in her quiver? My number one question is, 'What's her backstory?’ [The writer's room] floated an idea for Number One's backstory that I'm not going to share right now because it blew my mind when they said it.”

Despite being made more than half a century after the Original Series, the look of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will echo those early ’60s designs – from the Enterprise starship interiors to the Starfleet uniforms.

“It’s a fine line because, obviously, we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show,” Goldsman told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not Discovery. There are a few more reach-backs [to the Original Series] and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember, the Enterprise existed as a little piece [of Star Trek: Discovery], but now it’s its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of the Original Series, that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Intriguingly, at this point in the Star Trek timeline , Kirk and other members of the original crew must be out there somewhere in the universe, so the smart money would be on a few headline-grabbing (recast) guest appearances – as the older members of the Original Series line-up, McCoy and Scotty would seem prime candidates.

If a few familiar faces do turn up, however, we may have to wait a while to see them, with Goldsman telling the TCA panel that bringing classic characters back into the fray isn't a priority.

“We’re starting wth this crew and don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy,” he said. “We want to dig deeply into the characters in this ensemble. We’re open to widening our arms, but right now, and this is said in the best possible way, what you see is what you get."

Perhaps the biggest elephant on the Enterprise bridge, however, is Pike’s tragic story…

When we meet him in Original Series two-parter ‘The Menagerie’, it’s revealed that he’s been left severely disabled by a radiation leak. In Discovery, he’s forced to endure a vision of that future, so it'll be intriguing to see how that knowledge preys on his mind, and how much it plays into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ story.

“The most honest thing I can say is, I'm still figuring out,” Mount explained at Star Trek Day. “Pike didn't just learn how he dies, he learns in what circumstances. So we do know that at some point he's going to be presented with a promotion opportunity to Fleet Captain. And he has to accept that in order for the fate to come into existence. So what is it that's going to allow him, both in terms of circumstance and emotion, to accept that promotion? It's a tough question but I think we'll figure it out together.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is already confirmed

The show hasn't even aired yet and Strange New Worlds: season 2 has already been confirmed by Paramount Plus via StarTrek.com . In fact, the streaming service is so engaged by the prospect of a follow-up season that it's already shooting – one journalist at Strange New Worlds' TCA panel on February 1, 2022 noted that Ethan Peck was wearing his Vulcan ears and costume because he was already working on the new season.

Strange New Worlds release date, trailer, cast, plot and timeline for the Star Trek spinoff

The classic voyages of the original Enterprise begin anew.

new star trek uk

Boldly go! Of all the new Star Trek projects, Strange New Worlds probably has fans the most excited, if only because it seems poised to be the one series that feels the most like “regular Star Trek.” Just a few short years ago, it would be hard to imagine yet another Star Trek prequel whipping the fandom into a lather. And yet, Strange New Worlds is poised to really, truly, take the Trek franchise back to boldly going basics. Here’s everything we know so far.

As Discovery and Picard continue to chart a course into Trek’s future, one part of the Trek franchise is keeping a nostalgic boot firmly planted in its colorful past. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the next new series in this expanding universe, and it's swimming in nostalgia even though not a single legacy actor is involved with the project. Unlike Star Wars, Star Trek continues to boldly recast legacy characters. Here’s what that looks like for Strange New Worlds .

When is the Strange New Worlds release date?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will hit Paramount+ May 5, 2022. Season 2 is already in production. It looks like each season will be 10 episodes long.

Is there a Strange New Worlds trailer?

There are several videos that are basically different kinds of Strange New Worlds trailers. The first proper video was released in 2021 and was called “Meet the Characters.” More recently, there’s been a teaser trailer that focused on Captain Pike riding a horse, and boundless outer space optimism, in a decidedly pointed pivot away from darker, grittier, Star Trek.

What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a new ongoing TV series set in the 23rd century probably about 5 years before the classic show. It was announced on May 15, 2020, in a video message from Ethan Peck, Anson Mount, and Rebecca Romijn. The cast repeatedly suggested this project came into being because fans wanted it . The show will take place in established Star Trek continuity (Prime Timeline), but during a period that has not been extensively depicted.

Why is it called Strange New Worlds ?

The title "Strange New Worlds," is taken from Captain Kirk's opening narration from the classic Star Trek.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

In subsequent versions of Star Trek , this narration was changed: in TNG the "five-year mission" became "continuing mission" and "where no man" became "where no one." It's a good bet that if there's an opening narration from Captain Pike in Strange New Worlds , that he will say "five-year-mission" and "where no one has gone before." In canon, this speech is considered to be the motto of Starfleet, and in the J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek Into Darkness (which featured a different Captain Pike) it was called "the captain's oath."

Where is Strange New Worlds in the Star Trek timeline?

Strange New Worlds is a sequel to Discovery Season 2, a sequel to Star Trek: Enterprise , and a prequel to The Original Series . Presumably, the show will chronicle a five-year mission commanded by Captain Pike from roughly 2258-ish to 2263-ish. For context, this is how it shakes out.

  • 2150s-2160s Star Trek: Enterprise
  • Early 2254: Short Treks episode "Q&A"; Spock's first day on the Enterprise
  • 2254: "The Cage"; first (initially) unaired 1965 Star Trek pilot. Also, the first (filmed) appearance of Spock, Pike, and Number One
  • 2256-2258: Star Trek: Discovery Seasons 1 and 2
  • 2258-2263(?) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • 2265-2270 Star Trek: The Original Series .
  • 2270s-2290s Star Trek classic movies
  • 2360s-2401: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, TNG movies , Lower Decks, and Picard.
  • 3189-?: Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and Season 4.

Trek canon has established that Pike commanded two consecutive five-year missions on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 prior to Kirk taking command in 2265. (Though in some old canon this was 2264.) The events of "The Cage" on Talos IV happen before Discovery and Strange New Worlds , and the Short Treks episode "Q&A" happens before all of that. Pike’s temporary command of the USS Discovery in Discovery Season 2 was seemingly a blip in between back-to-back five-year missions on the Enterprise .

In theory, Strange New Worlds might have taken place between 2254 and 2257, which would then make it a prequel to Discovery and a weird midquel to "The Cage." However, Akiva Goldsman said the showrunners are not "hitting the reset button," on the characters, which confirms the series will take place after Discovery Season 2. So, 2258 or 2259 is a good bet. Goldsman also told the Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 , that various aspects of the Strange New Worlds' aesthetic will be made to look like it matches up closer to The Original Series . This means that yes, the uniforms and the design of the Enterprise have changed again, slightly .

“It's a fine line because obviously we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show. It's not Discovery . There are a few more reach-backs (to The Original Series ) and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery ] but now its its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of The Original Series , that's what we're looking to do.”

Because Strange New Worlds is literally taking place so close to The Original Series , it will be an interesting dance to see how exactly Pike, Spock, and everybody else is dressed. Will Spock switch back to a gold shirt at some point? (He wears gold in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the second TOS pilot episode.)

Who is in the cast of Strange New Worlds ?

Here’s the full regular cast of Strange New Worlds, all crew members of on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley AKA “Number One”
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Chief Engineer Hemmer (an off-shoot of the Andorian species called an Aenar.)
  • Christina Chong as Security Chief La’an Noonein-Singh
  • Melissa Navia as Flight Controller Lt. Erica Ortegas

As of March 2022, Paramount+ started rolling out 30-second videos that highlight different members of the crew. These videos have included insights into Uhura, La’an, Erica Ortegas, M’Benga, Chapel, and Hemmer. Each video (embedded above) feels like a miniature trailer!

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds will also feature Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk. (But we don’t know if he’s a Captain, yet.)

How does Strange New Worlds connect to Discovery and Short Treks ?

The 2018 Season 1 finale of Discovery ended with the arrival of the USS Enterprise, though we didn't see anyone inside. 2019’s Season 2 re-introduced Pike, Spock, and Number One. Captain Pike was in every single episode of Discovery Season 2, the adult Spock started appearing from episode 7 onward, and Number One appeared in three episodes.

After that, Pike appeared in three Short Treks , "Q&A," "The Trouble With Edward," and "Ask Not." Number One and Spock only appeared in "Q&A" and at the very end of "Ask Not."

These versions of Pike, Spock, and Number One are the in-canon versions of the characters previously portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter (Pike), Leonard Nimoy (Spock), and Majel Barrett (Number One) in the TOS episodes "The Cage" and "The Menagerie." However, from a contemporary point of view, you could view Strange New Worlds as a direct spin-off of Discovery Season 2.

Who are the showrunners of Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman . At least one episode, probably the premiere episode, will be written by Jenny Lumet. As of 2021, Akiva Goldsman is the co-showrunner of Strange New Worlds along with Henry Alonso Myers. Kirsten Beyer also has revealed that she will be part of the writers’ room in Season 2.

We don't know all the directors of Strange New Worlds episodes, but Will Riker himself , Jonathan Frakes, has already said he can't wait to work with the cast:

"I’ve had great experiences with all three of them. Anson and I worked through finding Captain Pike. And Ethan and I worked through finding who Spock was. And the mantle of Spock, in particular, was so complicated and so emotionally taxing and was such huge shoes to fill, and Ethan felt it. Rebecca and I have a long relationship from back on The Librarians , and we have a fabulous working shorthand, so it will be great getting back to the floor with three old friends."

In addition to directing two Trek films in the '90s ( First Contact and Insurrection ) Frakes directed episodes of The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Discovery, and Picard . He has also directed at least two episodes of Discovery Season 3.

Akiva Goldsman also confirmed he has directed the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds . Previously, he directed the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Picard .

How many episodes will be in Strange New Worlds Season 1?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will run for 10 episodes.

How is Strange New World s different from other new Star Trek shows?

One of the biggest departures for Strange New Worlds will actually be a return of sorts. Since 2017, the various new Trek series have focused on heavily serialized seasons in which each episode must be watched in order to avoid being totally confused. Strange New Worlds is poised to return to stand-alone, episodic stories, a type of sci-fi storytelling that defined The Original Series and The Next Generation .

"We're going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic," Akiva Goldsman told Variety in May 2020. "Our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard . I imagine it to be closer to the original series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece."

Something Goldsman pointed out while on the official Star Trek aftershow, The Ready Room , was that the subgenres of Discovery and Picard were somewhat fixed, while TOS and TNG could hop genres week-to-week. Goldsman labeled Discovery as "science fiction/action-adventure" and Picard as "science fiction/drama." Some episodes of TOS and TNG are outright comedies("Trouble With Tribbles," or "Q-Pid"), while others are murder mysteries with barely any science fiction elements at all ("The Conscience of the King," or "Suspicions").

This is all to say that modern Trek seasons scan more like 10-15 hour long single episodes, whereas Strange New Worlds will focus more on self-contained episodes.

In April 2021, Goldsman doubled down on the episodic, stand-alone aspect of Strange New Worlds telling the Hollywood Reporter : “It's unlike the other [new] shows in that it's really episodic... Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs.”

Where can I watch Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will stream on Parmount+ in the United States, on Crave in Canada, with a global rollout to be announced.

Great job again by your graphics person — that is cool and funny!

Count me in and I can’t wait to catch-up with SNW and the remastered STTMP.

I was thinking I wouldn’t be able to see TMP director edition until September, so I’m pretty hyped I can watch it next month then. I ain’t waiting a month and a half before I can see SNW but I will subscribe to P+ for a month or two anyway.

I am assuming TMP director’s edition be included

Half life 3?

Be intetested to see if i can access the online option or if i HAVE to wath on the sky box if im getting it free with sky cinema

It will maybe work similar to how Netflix works through Sky. You create your account with the streaming service and then you can have the payment for the account go through your Sky bill instead of paying by card to Netflix.

Will SNW stream in 4K HDR, or be limited to last decade’s 1080p like Picard and Disco? I know P+ is capable of 4K HDR now (CBS All Access wasn’t, bizarrely), it just baffles me why they’ve chosen not to use it for their flagship Trek shows. Even just for future proofing.

Launching in the UK six weeks after STSNW premieres, nine months after Disco was pulled from Netflix and we will still have to wait to the day after it is released in America until it is available.

They need to wake TF up. Until there is parity and global scheduled releases I’ll keep watching new Trek from my current sources.

Wow Paramount+ has come a really long way from the early days of pretty subpar All Access (which I have never cancelled since 2017). It’s now at 60 million subscribers. Crazy how many they gotten in such a few years time. I remember reading when AA only had like 2-3 million subscribers when Discovery first season was done lol. No one really wanted it and for GOOD reason.

And I have to say I really like P+ now. It’s still not as great as Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and HBOmax (still my favorite) but it’s definitely a site worth having now, even if you don’t subscribe all year. The movie section has become MUCH improved (again, AA had like 20 movies the first year DIS showed up lol).

And its great to see it expanding worldwide. Of course it really created a mess with Star Trek internationally but in the end this will probably be the best thing and people will only need one site to view the new shows instead of the 2-3 they are doing now. It’ll probably be a few years before it really gets there, but will be a positive IMO.

So, is Ireland only included with Sky subscriptions, or will we have full access without having to fork out for that as well?

As usual, we seem to be bundled in with the UK, which is annoying enough, but usually without full access to the services people there enjoy (for example, we can’t buy TV episodes from iTunes or Amazon like people in the UK could with Disco). It makes very little sense, since it doesn’t seem to happen with other countries, let alone ones that use a different currency, or where one is an EU member state and the other is not.

Either way, this has been handled with supreme stupidity by Paramount, and a total lack of respect for the fans who would’ve been happy to hand over their cash if we’d have got our shows when they were initially believed to be made available and not had the rug pulled from under them with a week’s notice. I don’t know if I’ll bother signing up.

Titles that will become available through 2022 in the UK, Ireland, Italy and GSA include a collection of scripted, exclusive Paramount+ Originals and exciting new takes on iconic franchises, including  HALO ,  The Offer  and the new  iCarly  series. As the international home of SHOWTIME, the service will offer  The Man Who Fell to Earth, Ripley, Super Pumped,  and  American Gigolo,  in addition to popular titles from ViacomCBS, such as  Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Star Trek: Prodigy,  and MTV Unplugged.  The service will also feature a collection of new movie premieres and fan favorites from Paramount Pictures such as films from the  Mission Impossible  and  Transformer  franchises.

Star Trek 4 potential release date, cast and everything you need to know

A new writer has boarded the USS Enterprise.

preview for Chris Pine's Red Carpet Evolution

Star Trek 4 potential release date: When can we expect Star Trek 4?

Star trek 4 cast: who's going to be in star trek 4, star trek 4 plot: what's going to happen in star trek 4, star trek 4 trailer: any star trek 4 footage yet.

Star Trek 4 still isn't close to being released, but we do at least know that development continues on the long-awaited movie .

In March 2024, it was reported that Steve Yockey – who developed The Flight Attendant – had become the latest writer to tackle a new draft for the movie, which is intended to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña.

This is separate from the other two Star Trek movies in the works: a prequel movie directed by Toby Haynes and Star Trek: Discovery spin-off Section 31 , which finished filming in March 2024.

We'll likely see both of those movies before we see Star Trek 4 , but at least it should be released one day. But while we wait, here's everything you need to know about the (potential) return of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek 4 .

Is Star Trek 4 confirmed?

As far as we know, Star Trek 4 is definitely going to happen despite the fact we're nearing eight years since the last movie, Star Trek Beyond , was released.

The long-gestating movie finally looked to be on track in February 2022 when it was announced that JJ Abrams was returning to produce with Matt Shakman directing, to the surprise of the cast as much as the fans.

Unfortunately, Shakman left the movie in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel instead . And then in September 2022, Paramount took the movie off the release calendar entirely.

In March 2023, JJ Abrams – who has produced all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directed two of them – said that a search for a director is ongoing.

"I will say it's the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one," he told Esquire . Of course, Pine also called the franchise "cursed" so it depends how hopeful you feel like being.

We've heard nothing since about a potential director for the movie, but at least we know is that Star Trek 4 is in active development at Paramount, given that there is now a new writer on board.

director jj abrams and the cast from star trek

Once upon a time, Star Trek 4 was scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 22, 2023.

Of course, that never happened, and Star Trek 4 hasn't got a confirmed release date as of May 2024. There's no rumours either about when it could reappear on the schedule.

In June 2022, prior to Shakman leaving the project, Paramount boss Brian Robbins did confirm development was under way on the fourth Star Trek . "We're deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we're getting close to the starting line and excited about where we're going creatively," he said .

zoe saldana as uhura and john cho as sulu in a still from star trek beyond

However, in November 2022, star Zachary Quinto told The Independent : "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it.

"All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I’ve learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth Star Trek movie that feels real right now."

Other people involved seem to have faith in the project moving forward, though, and hopefully a new writer joining is a positive step.

All we can do is watch this space.

star trek

Even when Star Trek 4 was originally being released in December 2023, it hadn't been 100% confirmed that the reboot cast would be back.

That being said, during his June 2022 announcement, Robbins did say he knew audience "wants that cast in this movie" – referring to the reboot cast.

So, if it ever does come to fruition, we'd be surprised if it was with a brand-new cast. You can likely then expect the returns of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Urban certainly seems keen for a return, although he also revealed in March 2022 that, like Pine, he hadn't read a script yet . "I would love to work with those guys again; so much fun, the best hang. We'll see," he enthused.

It all feels very up in the air, as per Quinto's quotes, but that doesn't mean we can't hope.

The initial plan for the fourth movie was to have a timey-wimey adventure that featured Chris Pine's James T Kirk somehow joining forces with his long-dead dad, played by Chris Hemsworth .

Hemsworth opened up in May 2019 about why he stepped away from the movie , saying: "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

chris hemsworth as george kirk in star trek

It's unclear if this new version of Star Trek 4 plans to bring Hemsworth back or if it's gone in a totally new direction, but Hemsworth seems open to a return for the fourth movie.

In October 2022, Rings of Power bosses JD Payne and Patrick McKay teased more about what their original idea for the fourth movie was going to be. "The conceit was that through a cosmic quirk in the Star Trek world, they were the same age," McKay explained.

We also don't know yet whether the new movie will recast Pavel Chekov following Anton Yelchin's tragic death in 2016. "It's bittersweet because we are coming together for a fourth time, and one of us is no longer with us," Saldaña said in March 2022 .

"But we honestly feel that going back and keeping the Star Trek family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts."

Star Trek Beyond Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Right now, we don't have any confirmed plot details for the fourth movie, and it's not clear how closely it'll follow on from the ending of Star Trek Beyond .

The third movie ended with Kirk declining the promotion to vice admiral and staying as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Spock also chose to remain in Starfleet and reignited his romance with Uhura.

As the movie ends, they're all set to continue their mission on a brand-new USS Enterprise after the previous one was destroyed during the movie's events.

star trek beyond trailer grab

It means that the fourth movie can go anywhere. But, for Pine, he believes that whatever the plot is, it shouldn't try to compete with Marvel .

"I've always thought that Star Trek should operate in the zone that is smaller. You know, it's not a Marvel appeal. It's like, let's make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek ," he said.

"Let's make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great. But make it for a price and make it, so that if it makes a half-billion dollars, that's really good."

star trek beyond chris pine as kirk

You're kidding, right? We'd love to get all timey-wimey ourselves and show you a trailer for Star Trek 4 from the future, but we're stuck in the Mirror Universe.

Star Trek is currently in a bit of a purple patch for content as Paramount Plus , which is the home of all things Star Trek, is responsible for several new shows in recent years. But, it's not just new content, you'll also find where to stream the classics both movies and TV series below.

Before, Star Trek content was scattered all around different streaming services and searching for what you wanted to watch could feel like hunting for a cloaked Bird of Prey. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. However, we do have round-ups of the best sci-fi movies and TV shows on Netflix , Disney Plus and Amazon if you want to check them out.

You can also check out our take on the Star Trek movies, ranked so you know which movies to beam up onto your device. While Paramount Plus has everything Star Trek out there, you can find the odd bit of content on other platforms. So, below you'll find where you can watch what, regardless of where you're based, in our Star Trek streaming guide.

Strange New Worlds Season 2 Cast Guide — Every New & Returning Star Trek Character

I want strange new worlds to break star trek canon & save captain pike, this star trek: voyager episode subtly confirmed captain kirk broke a tos promise.

  • Paul Wesley played three versions of James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • Unexpected twists include an alternate future Kirk, a different reality Kirk, and Lt. Kirk's debut.
  • The Kirk family legacy on the Enterprise is further explored with the addition of Lt. Sam Kirk.

Paul Wesley portrays three versions of James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Wesley is the third actor to play Kirk in live-action as an adult, following in the footsteps of William Shatner, who originated the legendary Captain in Star Trek: The Original Series , and Chris Pine, who plays the alternate Kelvin Timeline's Captain Kirk in the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movie trilogy. Meanwhile, there is yet another Kirk serving on the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

It was a surprise when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds announced Paul Wesley was cast as James T. Kirk before season 1 premiered in 2022. Strange New Worlds is a prequel set about 7 years before Star Trek: The Original Series , but the series was expected to exclusively focus on Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck). That USS Enterprise trio who debuted to great acclaim in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 before receiving their own spinoff. Not only was Strange New Worlds adding a young Kirk initially a curveball, but so is Paul Wesley also playing alternate reality versions of Captain Kirk.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' cast of USS Enterprise legends grows in season 2, including the additions of Scotty and Lt. James T. Kirk.

4 Captain Kirk In Strange New Worlds Season 1, Episode 10 - "A Quality Of Mercy"

This james t. kirk is captain of the uss farragut.

Paul Wesley's debut as Captain James T. Kirk is in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, "A Quality of Mercy." In an alternate future where Captain Pike never gave up command of the USS Enterprise, Kirk is Captain of the USS Farragut. Pike and Kirk's starships team up against a Romulan incursion in a reworked version of the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Balance of Terror," which ended up having a very different and tragic result for the United Federation of Planets.

Captain Pike's tendency toward diplomacy ended up being the spark of an endless war with the Romulans, whereas Captain Kirk's decisive aggression in Star Trek: The Original Series prevented that same war.

However, this Star Trek alternate future timeline, and this version of Captain Kirk, were deleted by Captain Pike choosing to accept his tragic fate so that this future never comes to pass. Partially driving Pike's decision was learning that avoiding the tragic accident that disfigured him would force a similar fate upon Spock. Meanwhile, Pike was so intrigued by Kirk that Strange New Worlds season 1's finale ends with Chris looking up Lt. James T. Kirk's personnel file to learn more about the young Starfleet Officer.

3 Captain Kirk In Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 3 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

A different captain kirk falls for la'an noonien-singh.

Paul Wesley plays a second Captain James T. Kirk from another alternate reality in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3 , "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow." This Captain Kirk grew up in space aboard the USS Iowa and is the Captain of the United Earth Fleet's USS Enterprise, which is also mired in a losing war with the Romulans. Kirk ended up in 21st-century Toronto with Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) , where the duo sought to prevent a terrorist attack that would alter Star Trek 's timeline.

Heartbreakingly, Captain Kirk was murdered by a Romulan operative named Sera.

La'an fell in love with Captain Kirk during their mutual ordeal in the past. La'an's time with James, who was relaxed and outgoing, sparked her desire to break out of her shell which kept La'an from connecting with others. Kirk and La'an also encountered Pelia (Carol Kane), the extremely long-lived Lanthanite, centuries before she became a Starfleet engineer. Heartbreakingly, Captain Kirk was murdered by a Romulan operative named Sera (Adelaide Kane). When La'an foiled Sera's attempt to assassinate a young Khan Noonien Singh (Desmond Sivan), Kirk and his timeline were wiped from existence when Star Trek' s proper timeline was restored.

2 Lt. James T. Kirk In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Lt. kirk is the younger version of william shatner's captain kirk.

Paul Wesley's primary version of Kirk, Lt. James T. Kirk, officially debuted at the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," but Kirk finally beamed aboard the USS Enterprise in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6 , "Lost in Translation." The newly-appointed First Officer of the USS Farragut, Kirk soon helped Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), who introduced him to Lt. Spock, forging Star Trek: The Original Series ' iconic friendships.

Lt. Kirk also joined the crew of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode.

While Lt. Kirk was educated in the finer points of being a First Officer from Number One (Rebecca Romijn), he also learned from Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh about the alternate reality Kirk she met and fell for. Although Kirk is attracted to La'an , James admitted he has a pregnant girlfriend named Carol. Lt. Kirk also joined the crew of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical episode, and Paul Wesley will return as Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

1 Lt. Sam Kirk In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

There's already a kirk serving on the starship enterprise.

Another surprise from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is that another Kirk serves on the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk is assigned to the Federation flagship. Dan Jeannotte plays Lieutenant George Samuel "Sam" Kirk , the older brother of James T. Kirk. The mustachioed Sam is a xenobiologist and a friend of Captain Christopher Pike. Sam takes great pride in serving on the Enterprise. Still, sibling rivalry flares up whenever his brother Jim beams aboard.

It''s ironic that Sam Kirk begins the Kirk family's legacy aboard the Starship Enterprise.

Lt. Sam Kirk is destined to die in Star Trek: The Original Series , but in Strange New Worlds, Sam is a popular member of the Enterprise crew. Unfortunately, and amusingly, Lt. Spock is no fan of Sam's . Still, it's ironic that Sam begins the Kirk family's legacy aboard the Starship Enterprise, setting the stage for James T. Kirk's legendary Captaincy. And it's amazing that in just 2 seasons thus far, four versions of Kirk have appeared in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Who Is Nurse Ogawa?

Halo tv series canceled by paramount+, but there is hope for a season 3, another classic sega game is heading for a big-screen adaptation, quick links, the kelvin timeline gave fresh faces to familiar characters, potential to see tng characters in their early days, is an alternate timeline necessary.

Space. The final frontier. Since Star Trek: The Original Series premiered on September 8, 1966, audiences have been captivated by the idea of a bright future where traveling to strange new worlds with advanced technology was possible. For some fans, Star Trek isn't just a franchise; it's an entire universe of possibility. Part of that is the cool tech, including some of the starships . Another part is the vast array of alien cultures and intergalatic politics. However, one of the greatest elements of the Star Trek franchise is its characters. Even casual viewers have at least a cursory knowledge of Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, and Uhura. Those classic characters became even more prominent with the introduction of the Star Trek Kelvin Timeline films .

It may be hard to believe now, with various Star Trek projects popping up every few months. But back in 2005, when Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled, there was a dearth of Star Trek material for years. This changed when the characters from The Original Series were rebooted into the Kelvin Timeline films. At the time of writing , the Kelvin Timeline films include Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016).

Nurse Alyssa Ogawa is one of the most beloved supporting characters in the franchise, but what is it about her that makes her so popular?

These films exist separately from the "prime" timeline. That way, the stories that fans have come to love from TOS and beyond are still canon, while at the same time, different versions of these iconic characters could go on new adventures as different versions of themselves. The boost that the Kelvin films gave the characters of TOS could also be implemented in a new film featuring the characters of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

One of the great things about the Kelvin Timeline films is that it gave the opportunity for the classic TOS crew to be re-imagined by younger actors. For decades, those characters have been synonymous with their actors, and for good reason. There's no denying that TOS was an influential and groundbreaking series.

However, with a franchise as long-running as Star Trek, different actors playing the star characters is par for the course. After all, who doesn't have fun speculating on who would make a great James Bond or arguing over the best Batman portrayal? Showcasing the talents of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldaña, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and many others gave the franchise a boost in the public eye. Classic characters were rebooted for fans and in a way that was accessible for new audiences. Since then, Spock has been played by Ethan Peck on Discovery , Short Treks , and Strange New Worlds . Kirk is now played by Paul Wesley in Strange New Worlds . With this in mind, why not do the same for the beloved characters of The Next Generation ?

Picard and the upcoming (hopefully soon) Legacy are following TNG characters after the end of TNG, propelling their stories forward. Even so, the original run of TNG ended 30 years ago. Younger audiences are not as familiar with the characters. Reintroducing them with younger actors might be the key to jumpstarting interest in TNG, and would provide an opportunity to explore these characters in their younger days.

What's more, existing media has already laid the groundwork for exploring these characters' histories. Picard, for example, often talks about how cocky he was in his younger years. It would be captivating to watch him grow into the celebrated captain (later admiral) he's widely known for being. Worf also has a fascinating background with a lot of lore that could be explored . And what about the early days of Jack R. Crusher and Dr. Beverly Crusher? A film series has the potential to expand on these possibilities, revitalizing the beloved characters.

With all that said, were there to be a reboot TNG film series, would there be a need for an alternative timeline? Would the film series exist in the prime timeline, the Kelvin timeline, or would an entirely new timeline be necessary? This would depend on how much the writers want to play around the different versions of the characters. Like Picard, the film series could be set in the prime timeline if the writers intend to stick to the previously laid out canon. (Although, that's not to say that even in the prime timeline, Picard wasn't affected by the events of the Kelvin timeline .) However, if they want to stray, it would be intriguing to see how the TNG crew are changed by the Kelvin timeline. As for a new timeline, that could be tricky, considering what has already been mapped out. However, if done well, it could work. There is an audience appetite for multiverse stories , after all.

At the end of the day, it doesn't appear like Star Trek is going to stop developing projects anytime soon. That leaves fans with plenty of room to dream. What young actors today would make a great William Riker or Data or Geordi La Forge? Surely, there's young talent out there that could rise to the occasion and bring more TNG stories to the big screen. Until then, fans will just have to imagine.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Wilson Cruz Feels There's More To Hugh Culber’s Story, So We Discussed Whether It Could Continue In Starfleet Academy

There's more potential for the story.

Star Trek: Discovery 's final season celebrated the series and gave an ending that actors like Doug Jones felt gave them closure on their characters. That's not to say everyone felt that way, however, as actor Wilson Cruz recently revealed to CinemaBlend he felt there was more potential for Hugh Culber's story to grow. With several Discovery cast members joining the cast of Starfleet Academy , Culber could return, too, but would the actor show up?

Cruz was gracious enough to speak to CinemaBlend to promote the upcoming digital release of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 on August 26th, and on Blu-ray and DVD on August 27th. We discussed the totality of Culber's story in the series, which fans can rewatch with a Paramount+ subscription , and how Season 5 finally felt like the ship's doctor had conquered his inner turmoil and was ready to move forward. Cruz spoke about his feelings of the final arc and the potential it had:

I was actually really excited about now that we've closed this chapter of questioning, who he was gonna be now, right? Like, he was firing on all cylinders at that point. So, I, I feel like we're gonna probably see him step into more of his counseling and see him more on these away missions. There was a lot of opportunities for that. So I just feel like, by the time we finished the season, this was a character that was completely three-dimensional We've seen him in every conceivable position. I could really take him anywhere, and I felt like as an actor, I could step into any situation, and I could make it work.

Hugh Culber pointing on the set of Star Trek: Discovery

Hugh Culber had a new zest for life he lacked after his resurrection, and it sparked a real change in him that would've been great to explore in another season. Of course, Star Trek: Discovery was canceled , so I feel we were robbed of what this new era of Culber on the show could've been.

Part of that transformation was thanks to the episode "Jinaal," in which Culber volunteered to be a temporary vessel for a Trill, Jinaal Bix, who had information the Discovery crew needed. Though the ritual made the process temporary, Wilson Cruz confirmed to CinemaBlend that there are echoes of Jinaal that remain in Hugh's body:

If you look at the rest of the season, I haven't really talked about this, there was an element of Jinaal still left in him. There was still the awe, you know, the thing about Jinaal was that he was locked in that away for 800 years, and there was a joy of being alive again that [Culber] understood but never allowed himself to live it. And I feel like Jinaal gave him the ability to be like, ‘Yes, this existence is amazing and can be exciting and fun, and I need to embrace that part of it.’

Imagine Culber maintaining some semblance of his boldness while being Jinaal and taking that with him on new away missions! It's killing me that we didn't get another season of Star Trek: Discovery to explore that, though I did think the series' conclusion was solid enough.

There is one upcoming Star Trek series that Hugh Culber could join, and it's already added Discovery characters to its cast . I felt like I knew the answer already, but for posterity's sake, I asked Wilson Cruz if he'd like to reprise Culber on Starfleet Academy for a chance to show off the new side of the character. He answered:

Yeah. They know where I am. They know my email. They know my phone number. They know all of my representatives, and they know that I would come back. So I'll leave it at that, but I haven't been asked.

I have a feeling that once Star Trek: Discovery characters start to appear in Starfleet Academy , we're going to see a number of them pop in and out of the show. I definitely think that Wilson Cruz's character is an obvious choice, and that he could teach cadets a lot of things about medicine and counseling others on a ship.

Doug Jones in Stra Trek: Discovery

Jones explained what was up to CinemaBlend.

Starfleet Academy is its own show, though, and with the massive cast it already has, it could be telling more stories about the 32nd century rather than continuing the story of Star Trek: Discovery . That's not to say there won't be ways for it to be connected, as even shows like The Next Generation found ways to work in The Original Series actors, in addition to its numerous guest stars , despite a 100-year gap in the timeline.

If an appearance in Starfleet Academy isn't in the cards, there are always novels and comic books to continue Hugh Culber's personal journey. After all, the story in Star Trek is never truly over for its characters when the show ends unless they die like Trip Tucker did in Enterprise 's finale. Aside from that, however, I would expect to see Culber in more Trek adventures regardless of their medium.

Star Trek: Discovery is available to stream right now on Paramount+. I'm planning on re-watching Seasons 3-5 ahead of Starfleet Academy 's release to get a refresher on life in the 32nd century, and am hoping a good number of fans get the same idea so we can revisit it together.
