Fort Collins is a city of about 170,000 in north central region of the western U.S. state of Colorado . The seat of Larimer County, the city lies 59 miles (95 km) north of Denver on the Cache La Poudre River at the eastern edge of the Front Range foothills. fort collins tourist information

Old Town is the downtown area of the city, centered on the cross-streets of College Avenue and Mountain Avenue. It is the historical beginnings of the town, with a vast variety of older buildings and historical monuments. Those seeking to visit architecture from the early 20th century should come to Fort Collins for its prime examples.

The Colorado State University campus is right in the middle of the city, extending from Prospect Road on the South to Laurel Street on the north, and from Shields street on the west to College Avenue on the East. The university also has several other smaller campuses throughout the city. The big white "A" on the mountain west of town stands for Aggies, a relic from when CSU was Colorado Agricultural College.

Map

By public transit [ edit ]

Public transit is provided by Transfort . Most routes run M-Sa 5AM to 8PM hourly, although some of the more popular routes have a frequency of every 30 minutes. The MAX route runs every 20 minutes. Buses do not operate on Sundays. All Transfort services free as of June 2023.

There are four main transit hubs in Fort Collins: the Downtown Transit Center, the CSU Transit Center, the South Transit Center, and the Harmony Transfer Center. The Downtown Transit Center and the South Transit Center are connected by the MAX BRT system. The CSU Transit Center is just a short walk from a MAX stop. The Harmony Transfer Center can be reached via Route 16 from the South Transit Center. The Poudre Express is available from both the CSU Transit Center and the Harmony Transfer Center. Flex services are offered from the Downtown Transit Center and the South Transit Center. Most intercity bus services, including Bustang, make stops at the Downtown Transit Center and the Harmony Transfer Center.

There is also a free, on-demand taxi service provided by the city on routes that have been suspended. Do not count on it if you need to be anywhere quickly. Taxis are often very late.

The "FoxTrot" service between Fort Collins and Loveland has been replaced by Flex.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Fort Collins is renowned for being incredibly bicycle-friendly according to US standards, boasting numerous paved trails and designated bike routes. Remarkably, bike lanes are found everywhere, including on the most uncomfortable arterial roads. In fact, biking can often be faster than driving, particularly during rush hour, as bike trails often take more direct routes and are typically given priority at street crossings. To aid navigation, a bicycle map is available here .

There are many bike rental options in Fort Collins:

  • Recycled Cycles rents bikes for $30/day.
  • Guests at the Armstrong Hotel are provided free bikes to ride during their stay.
  • Spin ride share e-bikes and scooters can be found all over the city.
  • Many other bike shops such as The Gearage may also rent bikes.

The Fort Collins Bike Coop is likely the most affordable choice for both parts and repairs. This nonprofit charity is operated by volunteers, enabling them to offer significantly lower prices compared to other places. The mechanics are highly experienced and provide you with the opportunity to return to the shop and learn how to fix your bike while they work on it. Additionally, they have a vast selection of used parts.

  • Cache La Poudre River , ☏ +1 970-232-3840 , toll-free: +1-800-274-3678 , [email protected] . The Cache La Poudre river flows from the canyon proper, several miles north, through town and offers excellent fly fishing for wild rainbow and brown trout. In town, quick fishing access is available starting from the crossing at North Shields and continuing through town. You can tube and swim at various locations in the river in town, though take great care. The river is MUCH more powerful than you might think. The current can easily trap you if you aren't careful. Every year there are stories of naïve people on the local news who drown in tubing accidents. There are even signs posted at many parts of the river that are particularly dangerous. Tubing and swimming can be done safely, but make sure you check with somebody experienced first. There is a paved trail called the Poudre trail that runs parallel to the river through much of town. The canyon itself can be reached by taking College Ave./Hwy 287 north out of town and turning onto Poudre Canyon/Hwy 14. Pressed between narrow canyon walls and fed by snow-melt, the water here is wilder and colder and swimming should be done with caution. Several companies offer whitewater rafting in the canyon and kayaks are a common sight. There are several hiking trails in the canyon, including Greyrock Trail, which takes you across the river via bridge into open pine forest and meadow. Wildlife are common, including deer, fox, rabbit and black bear, as well as the occasional mountain lion and many kinds of birds. Camping and summer cabins are available throughout the canyon. The Columbine Lodge , in the small community of Poudre Park, offers both as well as beach access (for campers and residents), a good supply of snacks, drinks and good company. Seasonally, a shuttle is available between the Lodge and nearby Mishawaka Amphitheatre , a lively local bar on the river that opened as a dance hall in 1916 and continues to attract various famous acts and music-lovers every year. ( updated Sep 2023 )
  • Bike Parks and Trails . There is an extensive set of biking/walking trails throughout town. The Poudre Trail follows the Poudre River from Bellvue, through Fort Collins, to CSU's Environmental Learning Center. It is fully paved and extends all the way to Greeley, although there is a significant gap in the trail between Fort Collins and Windsor. However, from Windsor, the trail becomes paved again and continues to Greeley.

The Spring Creek Trail runs alongside the Spring Creek, from where it meets the Poudre River westward to Spring Canyon Park. Spring Canyon Park also includes a bike park. Another paved trail is the Fossil Creek Trail, which starts at the edge of Loveland's trail network and connects to the Power Trail in the east. Additionally, the Power Trail and the Mason Trail are paved routes that run north/south along Timberline and College, respectively. These trails provide low-stress cycling options. Heading north from Spring Canyon Park towards Bellvue, there is an extensive collection of mountain bike trails on the hogback, which forms the eastern side of Horsetooth Reservoir. Lory State Park, located on the northwest side of Horsetooth Reservoir, features a small bike park with various challenging elements such as jumps, a pump track, jump runs, and a wooden trials track. For adventurous mountain bikers, it is possible to ride from Bellvue through Lory State Park, along the western side of the reservoir, and onto the challenging Blue Sky Trail, leading to Loveland. However, it is worth noting that the Blue Sky Trail is highly technical. If you lack confidence in riding a bike up staircases, it is recommended to tackle the trail from north to south. Be prepared to allocate twice the amount of time you anticipate needing and be ready to walk your bike if necessary. ( updated Sep 2023 )

This Colorado City Was the Inspiration for Disney's Main Street, U.S.A. — and It's Still As Enchanting As Ever

What to eat, do, and see in Fort Collins.

When Harper Goff, an illustrator and production designer for Walt Disney, was asked in 1951 to draw up plans for a section of the company's new California theme park, he thought back to his childhood home: Fort Collins, Colorado . Established as a military outpost in 1864, the town became a stopover for the stagecoaches and wagons headed west on the Overland Trail. By Goff's day, Fort Collins had grown into a quintessential American town — and its attractive Romanesque and Classical Revival buildings provided the perfect inspiration for Disneyland .

But FoCo, as the locals call it, isn't stuck in the past. The median age of its residents is 29, thanks in part to the campus of Colorado State University; new businesses, meanwhile, have introduced a youthful spirit. Here's how to explore the best of Fort Collins.

A Grown-up Grande Dame

The 1923 Armstrong Hotel was revamped in 2019, and its 54 rooms are now outfitted with burnished-brass beds and plush Persian rugs. Don't miss the vinyl-record library at Ace Gillett's , the subterranean supper club and lounge — and save time for a whirl around town on one of the hotel's cruiser bikes. Doubles from $239.

A Sophisticated Sweet Shop

The world's largest selection of single-origin chocolate is made at Nuance Chocolate , which roasts ethically sourced cacao beans in-house. Specialties include the wildflower honey and lavender truffle — made in collaboration with Colorado beekeepers — and the fiery Snake Bite, featuring añejo tequila from nearby distillery Leopold Bros.

An Epicurean HQ

A resuscitated 1905 feed store and grain elevator is now Ginger & Baker , a market-café-restaurant where you can get bison carpaccio, scratch-made pies (the quadruple coconut cream is exceptional), and a locally blended spiced chai that can be transformed into a "cheeky chai" with a shot of Baileys. Entrées $18–$48.

A Bakery With Pep in Its Step

Inside a former mechanic's garage on an old farm you'll find Bindle Coffee : a roastery with a bar made from rail-car floorboards and tables hewn from 1870s barnwood. Power up for the day with a lemon poppy cruffin (a buttery croissant-muffin hybrid) and a spot-on cortado.

A Hyper-local Beer Bar

Taste Colorado in a glass: 11 of the 13 beers at Stodgy Brewing Co. , including a caramelly Belgian Quad and a Mexican Lager, are made entirely from regional malts and hops. When renovating the former fireplace- and stove-repair business, the owners repurposed soapstone stove parts for the tile floors. The bar is made from the remains of black walnut trees that were found on the property.

An Urban Oasis

More than 300 butterfly species — including black malachites, bright orange Julias, and zebra longwings — flit through the new 1,700-square-foot greenhouse at the Gardens on Spring Creek . Keep an eye out for birds-of-paradise, angel's-trumpets, and the voodoo lilies that bloom once a year.

Why Go To Fort Collins

Fort Collins is possibly best-known as the home of Colorado State University , but it caters to visitors of all ages, not just the college set. Here, travelers can engage in the outdoor pursuits Colorado is famous for, including hiking and whitewater rafting. Biking is also big here, but it's not just for the trails. Locals usually hop on two wheels to get around the city, which has plenty of bike racks and designated bike lanes. Fort Collins' city-based offerings are just as diverse as its recreation. The city hosts events year-round ranging from foodie-focused festivals to family-friendly concert series. And those who want a taste of Colorado's brews need not worry. Fort Collins' craft beer scene outdoes the one of neighboring Denver , which sits about 65 miles south.

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Fort Collins is from March to October. That being said, for a city that sees about 300 days of sunshine annually, there's not really a bad time to go. Temperatures in the spring and fall range from the mid-50s to the low 70s, making the weather perfect for exploring the great outdoors. Summer temperatures climb to the upper 80s, but Fort Collins' humidity stays pretty comfortable year-round, which means you won't have a problem splashing in the river or Horsetooth Reservoir after a nice hike. From November through February, highs rest in the low to mid-40s. If you travel during this time, you may be treated to some snow, so pack accordingly.

What You Need to Know

Grab a bike Bicycling is a popular way to get around town. The city has special parking zones for bikes as well as bike lanes to help you get around.

Sample the food Fort Collins boasts more than 70 different food trucks selling everything from waffles to cookies to barbecue to hot dogs. The summertime Food Truck Rally is also a great place to try all your favorites.

Use Fort Collins as a home base Rocky Mountain National Park , Denver , and Cheyenne, Wyoming, are all within driving distance of Fort Collins. Any of these locations would make a great daytrip.

It's a college town Colorado State University's campus is about 2 miles southwest of downtown Fort Collins. On-site, there are several museums to explore as well as the school's trial garden , not to mention you can always attend a game during football, volleyball or basketball season.

How to Save Money in Fort Collins

Attend weekly events Both the Fort Collins Foodie Walk and the First Friday Art Walk are free events. If you happen to be in town during one of them, you'll have access to a full evening of activities without spending a dime.

Pitch a tent Horsetooth Reservoir , along with several other parks, have campsites and camper cabins available. If you're willing to rough it, you'll spend a fraction of what you'd pay for a hotel.

Take public transportation While a car will be useful to get you to surrounding natural areas, rental fees and parking fees downtown can add up. If you'll be sticking around town, try biking or taking the bus. A day pass for riding the bus costs $3 while a seven-day pass costs $10.

Horsetooth Reservoir is one of many places nearby Fort Collins where travelers can experience the great outdoors.

18 Best Things to do in Fort Collins

1. explore horsetooth reservoir by boat.

Horsetooth Reservoir

Okay, let's get stuck in with what was a humungous highlight from our stay in Fort Collins!

First on our list of things to do in Fort Collins is to head over to Horsetooth Reservoir , which is just 8.5 miles from Fort Collins city.

It runs for approx 6.5 miles, is two-thirds of a mile wide and is the third busiest reservoir in Colorado state, attracting around a million visitors every year!

So what do you do here?

You hire a boat of course! And it is SOOOO much fun!

inlet bay marina

We have never driven a boat before, and the rush is incredible. I really wasn't sure what to expect before doing it, and was a little nervous.

But it is actually surprisingly easy to do, and you can build up a lot of speed out on the open water!

Just be sure to book well in advance as the reservoir can get busy (unsurprisingly) in the warmer months.

Inlet Bay Marina is found on the shore of Horsetooth Reservoir and is a great place for boat rental.

You can rent different types of motorised boats from here including pontoons, jet skis, group boats, fishing boats and runabouts.

Or if you want all the hard work done for you, you can book a boat tour.

Just be sure to check the conditions of the trails before you visit.

2. Explore the Historic Old Town

historic old town

Okay, time to head back into the town itself ...

More specifically, the well preserved and vibrant Downtown , or Old Town, Fort Collins is full of nature, food, shops and tourism.

There’s over 84 restaurants here offering a variety of different cuisines!

And a great way to experience some of the best tastes of Fort Collins old town by taking part in a food tour of the area .

But what I really loved, is that the atmosphere in Old Town Square is unbeatable with live music here most days.

During the summer Old Town Fort Collins is home to many events and festivals.

There’s often weekly free concerts, and beer, food and music festivals during the nicer weather.

Some of the most popular Fort Collins festivals hosted in the Old Town include Colorado Brewers Festival , Tour de Fat , and FoCoMX .

You can also find the only original trolley car west of Mississippi in Old Town Fort Collins, but more on that later…

3. Enjoy a unique cocktail at the CopperMuse Distillery

coppermuse distillery

CopperMuse pride themselves in producing high-quality craft spirits.

All their spirits are made with completely natural ingredients and CopperMuse started with their Vertueux and Vicieux Vodkas and now have a whole host of spirits including rums, whiskeys and gins.

This quirky and indie distillery offer over 60 craft cocktails for you to sample on your visit (which we did of course!).

There’s also on-site tours and tastings at CopperMuse. Opening hours vary from Tuesday to Sunday.

But better still, check their website to see what other events they have on, you might just find they host our next best thing to do ...

4. Check out a comedy show

comedy show fort collins

If you’re looking for a fun thing to do in Fort Collins, look no further than a side-splitting night at a comedy show!

Fort Collins is home to numerous comedy clubs, promising an entertaining night out. And we went to one at the above mentioned CopperMuse Distillery.

Other popular comedy clubs include Comedy Brewers and Comedy Fort and you will spot them wandering through town.

Both host a variety of comedians, as well as trivia, open mic and improv nights. You can easily buy tickets for comedy shows in Fort Collins on EventBrite .

The comedy show at the CopperMuse Distillery was excellent! And a nice bonus was the ability to enjoy their amazing range of cocktails whilst watching the show.

They don't run regularly, so you'll need to check their website about when they comedy shows are running and book tickets.

5. Grab a bite to eat at the Crown Pub

crown pub fort collins

Found in the Old Town Square, Crown Pub takes inspiration from an English-style pub ( so Bradley felt right at home! ).

They even claim to serve the best Fish and Chips in Fort Collins (we’ll let the Brits be the judge of that one!)

The menu consists of pub classics including burgers, sandwiches and pub chips. We also enjoyed the vegetarian offers, and there was a lot of food.

Brad being English, thought this pub had a very English vibe to it!

fort collins tourist information

They also offer a range of inventive and hand crafted cocktails. Happy Hour runs from Monday to Thursday, from 3pm until 6pm.

Crown Pub hosts live jazz every Sunday 7pm-10pm, with different artists every week . Just be warned ... this place gets busy!

6. Wander around City Park

city park fort collins

One of the great places to go in Fort Collins is City Park.

This large park is home to a lake, lots of walking trails and even a water park.

Sheldon Lake is great for fishing, paddle boating, and you can also go skating here in the winter!

The park boasts over 220 varieties of trees, so you can take yourself on a self-guided tree tour to experience all the nature City Park has to offer.

City Park Pool not only cools you off on a hot day, but guarantees a fun day out in Fort Collins. The pool is open during the spring and summer months at varying times .

7. Grab a bite at The Exchange

fort collins tourist information

The vibrancy and character of Fort Collins is fully showcased at the Exchange . This is an open-air plaza in the northern corner of Old Town Fort Collins.

The space is surrounded by vendors all serving craft beer and cocktails, and all types of food.

Food and drinks are served from repurposed shipping containers, which is very hipster! Vendors include Vatos Tacos and Tequila, Chick’n Cone and, our old friends, the CopperMuse Distillery.

It’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, and support small local businesses at the same time. There’s also loads of different events, all day everyday at the Exchange.

fun at the exchange district

Whether that’s Happy Hours, food deals or entertainment such as Bingo or Swing Dancing - there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

The Exchange caters well to Fort Collins' love of biking and the outdoors. It is connected with the Poudre Trail, and you can find plenty of bike parking.

There’s even a bike service station!

8. Relax at Riverbend Ponds

Riverbend Ponds

Riverbend Ponds is a natural area made up of a stretch of the Poudre River, several ponds and wetlands.

This is a popular fishing area , as there are several fishing ponds made up of former gravel mine ponds.

The ponds are filled with warm-water fish including catfish and largemouth bass. These are provided by the Colorado Division Wildlife.

Around the ponds you will also find three miles of trails which are ideal for hiking and biking.

There’s a boardwalk that crosses over the water, as well as longer trails connecting the area to Cottonwood Hollow and Running Deer Natural Areas .

If you’re into a bit of ‘twitching’ Riverbend Ponds is the place for you.

Over 200 species of birds migrate through the area, and make their nests here.

Depending on the time of year you might be able to spot pelicans, herons, gulls and ducks, just to name a few!

9. Go hiking at Lory State Park

lory state park fort collins

About 10 miles west of Fort Collins city you find yourself in a real outdoor paradise, the Lory State Park .

Spanning just under 2500 acres, it’s a very popular area for horse riding, rock climbing, hiking and biking.

Lory State Park has its own bike park including dirt jumping and a pump track. There’s around 26 miles of trails at Lory State Park, ideal for running, biking or hiking.

Visitors can choose from longer or shorter hikes, but the trails rarely exceed a 12% gradient. Some park’s trails on the east side provide access to some bays on Horsetooth Reservoir.

Which is where we caught our first glimpses of this water playground.

If you are interested in a longer hike, some of the best trails include Arthur's Rock Trail , Well Gulch Nature Trail and Howard Trail .

10. Ride the Birney Car 21 Trolley

fort collins tourist information

This is certainly the most charming way to get around the city and a truly unique thing to do in Fort Collins.

The Fort Collins trolley has been restored to its original 1919 state by volunteers.

Restoration was completed in 1984.

You can now have a ride on the Birney Car 21 on weekends and public holidays from April through to September (weather permitting).

The trolley travels between City Park and Old Town.

Fares are only $2 for adults.

11. Enjoy Jazz and cocktails at Ace Gillett's

ace gillets

Ace Gillet’s is a lounge and supper club serving cocktails and comfort foods - what more could you want?!

Since 1923 they’ve aimed to create community and connection through food, drink, and music.

The joint is named after Ace Gillet, a prominent figure in Fort Collins history. He was a passionate businessman, responsible for lots of hospitality ventures in the city.

So without him the hospitality scene in Fort Collins would unlikely be what it is today.

Ace Gillet’s underground lounge offers a relaxed place to enjoy food, drink and music.

The atmosphere is created by a well thought out set of vinyl and live music. And we absolutely loved the overall feel of this place.

ace gillets fort collins

Their unique handcrafted cocktails and food menus showcase the seasons and offer an alternative dining experience in Fort Collins.

Ace Gillet’s menus also aim to promote connection and interaction with their sharing plates.

Even the cocktail menus are something of a spectacle to look at!

Each drink has a hand drawn diagram with a detailed list of ingredients, methods of crafting and people who made the drink famous.

There’s even recommendations for the ideal food and music to pair the cocktail, in order to enjoy the optimal cocktail and jazz experience.

12. Take a famous Fort Collins Ghost Tour

Fort Collins old town’s century old buildings make the ideal backdrop for a spooky tour of the city.

On a list of the 20 most haunted cities in America, Fort Collins came in at number 3!

So it’s definitely one of the best places to jump on a ghoulish tour.

The tour provides you with the eerie history of the buildings, as well as taking you to some of the city’s most haunted spots.

A Fort Collins Ghost Tour shows you a spooky side to the city. You even get to go underground for some terrifying ghost hunting.

You can book your place on the tour in advance.

13. Play some retro pinball at the underground Arcade in the Old Town

arcade games

If you’re looking for some old school entertainment with a twist, look no further than Pinball Jones .

We had a LOT of fun in here!

Found in old town Fort Collins this is a quirky spot you don’t want to miss.

PBJs have provided Fort Collins with an elite display of pinball and arcade machines since 2011.

And as if it couldn’t get any cooler, it’s underground!!

The last 11 years have seen the place expand both in terms of size, number of games and of course popularity throughout Fort Collins.

There’s so much entertainment to choose from here. Air hockey, Pac-Man, bowlers … take your pick.

You can keep yourself fueled up with drinks and snacks, available on site.

The friendly and welcoming atmosphere means it’s a ‘ fun for all the family ’ destination.

They even allow you to hire the whole place - now that would be a cool event venue!

If you’re elsewhere around Fort Collins and fancy a play on a retro game, PBJs have their games at other locations around the city.

PinBall Jones is open 7 days a week at varying times .

14. Play one of the Pianos about town

Fort Collins’ Art in Public Places (APP) is a program dating back to 1995. The intention is to promote and enhance art and appreciation of art in the area.

APP also aims to add value to Fort Collins through the exhibition and maintenance of public art.

Piano’s About Town is part of the APP program, which started in 2010.

It combines art and music for the community’s enjoyment. For example, in 2018 the 100th piano of Piano’s About Town was painted.

The pianos are painted in the Old Town during the summer (May - October). During this period visitors can come and watch the artists work, and interact with them too!

Throughout the winter months, pianos are painted in some public indoor locations.

Once completed, the pianos are rotated around different locations throughout Fort Collins.

Not only can visitors check out the artwork, but they can also have a play on the pianos.

15. Try out tasty treats at the Food Truck Rally

food truck rally fort collins

The Fort Collins Food Truck Rally takes place every Tuesday from 5:30pm until dusk, from May to September.

It’s held on Sheldon Drive, City Park.

There’s a huge array of food vendors here every week! Their website gives a great overview of the food that’s on offer at the Food Truck Rally.

But the vendors rotate every week, so check their social media on Sunday evenings to see what’s on offer for the week ahead.

And it doesn’t just stop at food.

Each week there’s an array of live music performances.

There is a master music list for the whole season, but they update their social media every week with more details about the week’s upcoming acts.

16. Dine in one of the oldest restaurants in Northern Colorado

silver grill cafe

We absolutely LOVED dining at the Silver Grill Café.

It's full of that American charm I wanted from a café. It just so happens to be one of the oldest cafes in all of Northern Colorado and they have been serving breakfast and lunch since 1933.

But their roots actually date back to 1912!

They're also pretty famous now for their giant cinnamon buns, and they have an excellent range of vegetarian options, which suited us perfectly.

Just a heads up, this place is crazy popular , so you will need to wait for a table.

We took that opportunity to wander around some of the shops in the old town.

17. Try outdoor activities in Cache la Poudre River

Over the years the Cache la Poudre River has carved a canyon. This hidden treasure is the perfect place to take part in some adventurous outdoor activities.

However it is more than just a playground for adrenaline junkies. The river forms the heart of the Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area .

And in fact, it is essential to the lives of more than half a million people in the northern Colorado Front Range.

The class III and class IV rapids make it the ideal spot for some white water rafting .

Alternatively, Cache la Poudre is also popular for hiking, biking, camping, tubing , kayaking and fishing.

Winter spots like snowshoeing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are also popular here. So, there’s something for all outdoor enthusiasts all year round!

18. Visit the Gardens on Spring Creek

The Gardens on Spring Creek are a community garden, and Fort Collins’ botanical oasis.

There’s 12 acres of botanic gardens to explore here, as well as a butterfly house with over 300 North American butterflies.

Events and activities are run at the gardens including session on beekeeping, wellness and even yoga and Tai chi.

The gardens are open 10-5 daily. You can book tickets in advance .

I’ve been wanting to explore more of the U.S. for years, and what better time to travel domestically than during a global pandemic! After months of being quarantined in my hometown, I was thrilled for the chance to take a mini vacation to beautiful Colorado for a much-needed change of scenery. And although we only spent two days in Fort Collins, our meticulous planning paid off and we were able to take two hikes, visit eight restaurants and enjoy many of Fort Collins’ local attractions. Save this post for my ultimate Fort Collins travel itinerary!

General Advice for Visiting Fort Collins

The easiest way to get to Fort Collins is by flying into the Denver Airport and renting a car. If you’re too young or opposed to renting a car you can book a shuttle from DEN to Fort Collins through Groome Transportation . And, if you’re traveling during the pandemic, make sure to wear your mask in the Denver Airport (we actually wore two masks the entire time). There were WAY too many people at the airport deciding that proper PPE was optional and not enough employees enforcing the mask rules.

Story time! Since we knew we wanted a car during our trip, we rented a “Toyota Corolla or similar” through Enterprise Rent-a-Car. However, when we went to get on the shuttle to the rental agency, we found it at 100% capacity with only about 20% of the riders wearing proper masks. (Because of this, I would definitely recommend booking with a smaller agency).

After seeing the shuttle situation, we decided to skip the Enterprise shuttle and instead take the shuttle to Hertz, incorrectly assuming that the rental agencies would be easy to walk between. BOY WERE WE WRONG. After a 17 minute walk, dragging our suitcases through dirt on the side of a highway, we finally made it to Enterprise.

At this point, you can assume we were not in the best mood. Covered in dirt and sweat, we lugged our suitcases into a shady spot on the concrete outside of Enterprise while our friend went to check in and get our car. Minutes later, an employee calls our name and brings us to a white, Mustang convertible. Needles to say, our mood instantly approved and we rode around in “the ‘stang” with the top down for the rest of our vacation.

Where to Stay in Fort Collins

The elizabeth hotel.

When it comes to accommodation, there’s nowhere better than Fort Collins’ Elizabeth Hotel. Located in the center of town, The Elizabeth is a stone’s throw from all the best restaurants and shops in Fort Collins and offers everything you could possibly want during your Colorado vacation!

fort collins tourist information

The Best Fort Collins Itinerary

Hike to emerald lake.

The first item on our Fort Collins itinerary was hiking through Rocky Mountain National Park. After much research on the app All Trails , we settled on a scenic and moderately difficult hike to Emerald Lake.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been more difficult to purchase entrance tickets into the national park. Thankfully, we were able to snag passes for Friday (the only entrance time available was 3:00-5:00PM). Sadly, our luck ran out and we were unable to purchase entrance for our second hike on Saturday. We were online and ready to book the exact moment that tickets went on sale! Unfortunately they were sold out in seconds and we were unsuccessful.

If you plan on doing any hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park while in Fort Collins, I would suggest planning ahead and attempting to purchase tickets on your first available day. That way, you’ll have more time to purchase tickets for other days if you were unsuccessful on your first try (instead of waiting till your last day in town and being completely out of luck).

The passes cost $27/day and are sold in 2-hour entrance time slots. This means you can enter the park any time between those two hours,  not  that you can only be in the park during this time slot. You can purchase tickets here .

The park has COVID safety measures in place, but I would definitely suggest bringing a mask and hand sanitizer. This is especially true if you miss out on trailhead parking and are forced to take the packed shuttle bus.

Fort Collins Itinerary

Running down the trail, racing the sunset isn’t the best way to end a hike. But we did find ourselves greeted with gorgeous cotton candy skies like these!

ultimate guide to Fort Collins

Hike Through Horsetooth Reservoir

It has become very difficult to get your hands on admission passes into Rocky Mountain National Park. Because of this, you might find yourself moving onto Plan B. Thankfully, the Rocky Mountains are not the only hiking option Colorado has to offer.

When purchasing passes for a second day in Rocky Mountain National Park proved unsuccessful, we turned our sights to some of Fort Collins’ more local hiking options. Horsetooth Reservoir was the first on every list we came across so, come Saturday morning, we brushed the dirt off our hiking boots, powered up “the ‘stang” and drove the 15 minutes to the trailhead.

Hiking in Horsetooth Reservoir was every bit as easy as hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park was difficult. Where parking was a nightmare in RMNP, it couldn’t have been easier at this trailhead. RMNP had hundreds of people (usually not wearing masks). We were pleased to find Horsetooth Reservoir was the complete opposite! We crossed paths with a total of four other hikers during the whole hike.

And while the views are clearly not as impressive, it’s definitely the more economical option. Park passes here only set us back $9, instead of the $27 we paid for our hike to Emerald Lake. Horsetooth Reservoir also offers a wide variety of hikes for hikers of all skill levels. Since we were running short on time, we decided on an easy, 40 minute hike called “Shoreline Trail.”

Fort Collins Itinerary

Buy Legal Marijuana

Although I prefer my vices to be in the form of a generously poured Aperol Spritz, there’s no hiding the fact that, for many, buying legal marijuana is #1 on their Fort Collins itinerary. After a quick google search it seems, in Fort Collins at least, that the process is very simple. Simply order online from Organic Alternatives  and set your pickup time. The pickup process is moved completely outside and you’ll be required to show your ID to two different employees before receiving your order.

Prost at Prost!

After checking into our hotel, the first thing we noticed was our view of a local beer garden. Since the last trip we had taken together was Oktoberfest in Munich (clearly before the COVID-19 pandemic), we knew we needed steins immediately .

Prost is an appropriately named brewery/outdoor biergarten with affordable and tasty German beers on tap. We only paid $9/stein and the outdoor atmosphere is lively and fun.

ultimate guide to Fort Collins

Shop Around the Golden Poppy Herbal Apothecary

While attempting to nurse the hangover headache brought on by said stein, I headed to the cutest apothecary in town in search of some peppermint oil. Entering the Golden Poppy Herbal Apothecary, we found much  much  more than peppermint oil.

Since I know next to nothing about herbal remedies, we immediately turned to the staff for advice. They were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about all the products. I ended up leaving with a headache relief roller, skin ease cream and “beautiful” tea with calendula and gotu kola in addition to the peppermint oil.

Bonus? The entire haul only cost me $12!

Enjoy the Views from the Sunset Lounge Rooftop Bar

It’s extremely convenient when one of only two rooftop bars in town is directly in your hotel. Unfortunately, our timing was off and the bar wasn’t set to open for another two weeks due to the pandemic. However, the hotel staff was kind enough to let us up to enjoy the view and snap some Insta-worthy shots!

By now the Sunset Lounge should be open to the public. It’s the perfect addition to an amazing Fort Collins itinerary!

Wander Around Downtown Fort Collins

Fort Collins has an adorable downtown area filled with boutique shops, street art, flowers and tons of yummy restaurants! No visit is complete without taking a few hours to wander the artsy streets (and maybe stop for a local brew or a chocolate chip cookie from Mary’s Mountain Cookies ).

Fort Collins Itinerary

Fort Collins is covered in murals and cool street art! Make sure to check it out while in town.

best restaurants in Fort Collins

The Best Restaurants in Fort Collins

Although we were only in Fort Collins for two days, we definitely ate our fair share of delicious food. Add all of these restaurants to your list of what to eat, climb and experience in Fort Collins, CO!

The Emporium

The Emporium is The Elizabeth Hotel’s on-site restaurant and is filled with some of the cutest decor I’ve ever seen (not to mention the yummiest eats). Immediately after arriving to the hotel and showering off the dirt from our unfortunate highway walk, we made our way downstairs to The Emporium for a round of happy hour drinks and appetizers.

We ordered the braised beef short rib nachos and the garlic parmesan fries with aioli. It was the perfect snack after a long day of travel and the bartender makes a  mean  Aperol Spritz. Even if you booked your accommodation somewhere other than The Elizabeth, I would definitely suggest adding The Emporium to your Fort Collins food bucket list.

The Cache Rooftop at Ginger & Baker

Since my craving for drinks and views is never satisfied, we made reservations at The Cache Rooftop bar for dinner on our first night. Although the prices are not for the traveler on a budget, sometimes a little splurge is understandable and we feasted that night. The drinks were delicious and my friends were on cloud 9 after ordering the New York Strip Steak.

best restaurants in Fort Collins

Lucile’s Creole

For a picture-perfect brunch in Fort Collins, there’s nowhere better than Lucile’s. Growing up in the midwest, I haven’t had the chance to sample much creole cuisine and I was impressed . We sat down and immediately opened the [contactless] drink menu because, let’s be honest…brunch without booze is just sad breakfast. I then proceeded to order the best Bloody Mary of my life, made with pickle infused vodka and a generous amount  of spice!

The menu was every bit as mind blowing! The biscuits were enormous and served with delicious homemade jam or apple butter. We regrettably opted out of the beignets, since we were already bordering on food coma territory.

Fort Collins Itinerary

Beaujo’s Colorado Pizza

I had never heard of “Colorado-style” pizza before visiting Fort Collins. Where normal pizza uses a bit of sugar in the pizza dough, Colorado-style substitutes honey instead. They also included some honey on the side to dip your pizza in and it 👏🏻 was 👏🏻 delicious. Don’t plan on visiting without including Beaujo’s in your Fort Collins itinerary!

weekend guide to Fort Collins

Nuance Chocolate

If you’re a chocolate connoisseur or just love to snack on fancy chocolate in the middle of the day, Nuance Chocolate is the place for you. Nuance sells rows and rows of delicious chocolate from all over the world! I went for this “Habanero Chili” infused dark chocolate as well as a peanut butter truffle! To be honest, it was all a bit expensive, but insanely delicious.

Fort Collins Itinerary

The Welsh Rabbit

The second I heard the words “build-your-own-cheese-board,” I was already booking it to The Welsh Rabbit. This adorable little cheese shop, offers cheese from all over the world as well as jams, honeys, meats and freshly baked breads. They have another location right around the corner that functions as a full-service restaurant!

The goat cheese was to-die-for  and we were all devastated that our Wildflower Honey was 4 oz and too big to bring back in our carry-ons. The Welsh Rabbit was the perfect experience to add to our Fort Collins itinerary!

weekend guide to Fort Collins

Mad City Hot Chicken

Don’t let its location in a strip mall fool you, Mad City Hot Chicken serves some seriously delicious eats. And in addition to serving crispy, hot chicken in between buttery buns with a variety of sauces and delicious sides, the restaurant is very safety conscious. All dine-in options have been closed for the present. They’ve also opened their front-facing windows to serve as an order-up window!

I decided on the classic chicken sandwich with Nashville hot sauce. Although my mouth was on fire, it was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time!

Fort Collins Itinerary

The Butterfly Cafe

The Butterfly Cafe is an adorable, walk-up breakfast and coffee shop just around the corner from The Elizabeth. Since we knew fried chicken sandwiches were in our future, we wanted something light and healthy for breakfast. The Butterfly Cafe serves a variety of tasty smoothies, perfect for a light breakfast on-the-go!

things to do in Fort Collins

There’s nothing like eating yourself into a food coma before a hike to remind you of the joys of traveling. But hey, if you’re going to make your jeans uncomfortable you might as well have a great time doing it!

To be completely honest with you, I was not expecting to enjoy Fort Collins as much as I did. The town was charming and there was much more to do and see than I expected! All these things, coupled with the fact that we were staying at the most beautiful hotel in town  and cruising around in a Mustang convertible, made our time in Fort Collins truly fantastic.

About Fort Collins

Situated at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, 60 miles north of Denver International airport, Fort Collins is home to fabulous recreational opportunities, diverse cultural attractions, a vibrant nightlife scene and  family fun . Taste award-winning beers at one of 20 (and counting) local  breweries . Or, explore the fanciful creatures at the Swetsville Zoo with your family. Fort Collins prides itself on the plethora of  restaurants  and  outdoor activities , a picturesque downtown and of course, our beer. Fort Collins is always full of things to do, no matter the season. Explore the links above to find what you need, or take a look at our suggestions for things to see and do!

Fort Collins: Colorado’s Craft Beer Capital!

Beer mug

Visit  Anheuser-Busch  to learn how Budweiser is made, see the Clydesdales, and dive into the history of one of the longest-running brewing companies in the country.  Odell Brewing Company  was the first craft brewery established in Fort Collins and is going strong today with award-winners like 90 Shilling Ale and 5 Barrel Pale Ale. Visit their tasting room for some great beers, including a few experimental brews, and while you’re there pick up a t-shirt or two for your friends back home.

If you’re in the mood for some classic American food with your beer, head over to  CB & Potts  or  CooperSmith’s Pub & Brewing  for delicious homemade dishes and even better beers. CooperSmith’s even makes their own root beer!

Lastly, “Follow your folly” over to  New Belgium Brewing Company , makers of regional favorite Fat Tire Amber Ale, and experience one of the most unique breweries in the industry. Known as much for their commitment to the environment as their great beers, New Belgium has won awards for both! One step into their tasting room and you will know that fun is the name of the game; if you’re lucky, you might get to take a ride on the twisty slide at the end of your tour.  Equinox Brewing  will give you the opportunity to not only taste the beer but also take the recipe home to make your own. Equinox sits adjacent to Hops & Berries, a Fort Collins home brew store. Find everything you need to create your own specialty brew! If you can’t decide which brewery to visit, try following our Foam on the Range Tour to get a taste of them all. Remember always to designate a driver and drink responsibly!

An Adventure in Arts & Culture

Piano-public-art

Old Town is full of shops and galleries featuring the work of local artists, craftsmen and photographers. Stroll around and meet them during a First Friday Art Walk (check the  calendar  for information). For the widest array of classical music and dance options, your vacation to Fort Collins should be planned between September and May. That’s when Canyon Concert Ballet, the  Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra , and the  CSU Department of Music, Theatre and Dance  all present their seasons.

Other choral and instrumental groups perform year-round, and summer brings a variety of performers out to street festivals, under the stars or over the lunch hour. All the world’s a stage – at least it seems like it in Fort Collins. A little light musical? A meal with your  entertainment ? Cutting-edge drama with nationally known visiting artists? Or an original drama performed by talented members of the  community ? The curtain goes up on it all, at venues ranging from  Bas Bleu Theatre , located in a reclaimed historic machine shop by the river, to the  Lincoln Center , Fort Collins’ premier arts venue. On any given Friday night, the center could be hosting a touring Broadway show, an original drama by a local playwright, two or three exhibits by local artists, and a fundraising event for a local non-profit. So you see, Fort Collins is the place to be when you want to add arts & culture to your vacation experience. Check it out today!
