Browsec VPN for Windows

Security Status

A free and powerful VPN service

Browsec VPN is a proxy extension for browsers that provides security and privacy while you're online. There is a premium subscription for the service, but the baseline version is completely free  and allows for peace of mind during all your online activity. You can download Browsec VPN for PC or for mobile; the extension is compatible with Opera , Chrome , Firefox , Microsoft Edge , iOS, and Android .

Fast, secure browsing on all your devices

Like other VPN services, Browsec VPN will encrypt your Internet traffic and route it through a secure cloud network , quietly protecting your digital privacy in the background while you focus on browsing. Browsec also won't log any of your vital connection data, local content, bandwidth usage, site cookies, or pages requested. In this way Browsec stands up with other great VPN services such as PureVPN or NordVPN , adding an extra thick layer of online protection.

The protection of your Browsec VPN account can cover up to five devices simultaneously , whether wi-fi or data, desktop or mobile. If you choose to purchase the Premium membership (which offers access to servers from more locations) this subscription also covers all your devices at once. You'll never have to re-purchase a Premium account just to use it on your mobile device, for instance.

As a mobile application, Browsec offers an elegant, intuitive design that makes the most of a simpler interface. Keeping the app free and user-friendly was the priority for Browsec, and as such customizing it is a minimal fuss. The process is as simple as selecting a server and toggling on the secure connection. Any traffic from that point forward is monitored through an IPSec protocol, keeping your online activity anonymous.

How to install Browsec on Opera

Browsec VPN is a popular choice for Opera users , as it works well in tandem with the browser's built-in adblocker . Since Browsec is light on processing power, using wi-fi with Opera's Turbo Mode and Browsec VPN makes for very fast browsing while keeping your data private and secure. Installing Browsec on Opera is simple. Open Settings (or Preferences if you're using Mac), then open Privacy & Security. Toggle on Browsec, choose a location, and you're ready to go.

Opera is also a great pick because users can set the browser to select an optimal server location . It considers factors such as location, server capacity, network speed, and latency, finding the best balance of speed and security. Opera's automatic location mode keeps online activity supported by Browsec at the maximum available speed.

Data privacy with Browsec

While Browsec is safe and has no leaks, is itself virus-free, and offers military-grade encryption (IPsec with AES256), the service does collect personal user information . Browec uses the typical disclaimer of taking no responsibility in the event that your personal content does get leaked, and the fact that the company (based out of Russia) is free, begs the question of how they benefit from the transaction.

There is always some level of data collection when a user subscribes to a VPN service - typically an email address, transaction details (such as the credit card with which you purchased the service), and the location of the user. Browsec is not specific when relaying what personal information it takes from the user , but it could be anything from passwords to Internet activity when the VPN is running in the background. It's an uncomfortable omission.

Browsec offers minimal customer support

Browsec's website offers both customer support and an FAQ, both of which are equally minimal. The FAQ page consists of only three questions , and offers vague information about the product itself. The lack of details may raise eyebrows, and Browsec's customer support is slow . Product descriptions on the App Store and Play Store are similarly irrelevant, to the detriment of those on the fence about installing the VPN.

Browsec vs other VPNs

Compared to paid services like NordVPN or PureVPN, Browsec falls short. NordVPN has far more servers (5,700 compared to Browsec's 41) from more countries (60 compared to Browsec's 40) and that's only if you use Browsec's premium plan. The free Browsec experience offers a meager four servers . NordVPN also allows for 6 connected devices, which is one more than Browsec, and implements a Kill Switch as a last line of defense.

PureVPN is also a preferred alternative to Browsec, offering over 750 VPN servers in over 140 countries globally, including popular regions like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Europe. PureVPN uses AES 256-bit encryption and owns a self-managed global network . PureVPN also has the same level of readable, intuitive UI as Browsec, while still maintaining a more trustworthy relationship with the user.

A free VPN with strings attached

Browsec provides a wide variety of promising features: A solid number of servers, military-grade encryption, access to Netflix , and an easy set-up. For a free VPN, Browsec is an excellent service , but is it worth spending some money in order to keep your data private? This is the crux of the argument for and against Browsec, as at the time of writing this article the user base for Browsec is 3 million strong.

Data logging is the biggest concern with Browsec, as there's little reason to trust them with your passwords or any other information , and the FAQ and customer support do little to assuage skepticism. The terms of service on their website make it clear that Browsec is not responsible for any failures to maintain confidentiality, security, accuracy or quality of your data content - including passwords - and that's enough to scare us away from using the VPN. It feels like asking a wolf to guard your sheep, and that’s not the kind of protection we’re looking for.

Keeping up with the competition

If you're willing to overlook the privacy concerns pertaining to Browsec, the product does have much to offer. The new IPsec encryption is a strong line of defense, and browsing speeds (particularly on mobile) are to be commended. Browsec regularly achieves speeds of around 95% the original speed of the geographically closest server. If you choose to download Browsec, however, take the time to look through the various permissions that the app requests. If there are risks involved in using this VPN, you should be aware of them before installing.

  • No registration needed
  • Fast speed on mobile
  • Supports multiple devices
  • Collects unspecified user data
  • Fewer servers and countries than the competition
  • Bad customer support

best vpn for safari - cover

Top 6 VPNs That Work Best with Safari

When it comes to using a VPN with Safari on a Mac, finding the best VPN with the right balance between speed, security and compatibility is easier said than done.

While many VPNs cater for multiple platforms and browsers, not all of them optimize their performance for Safari, which is still the most popular browser for Mac users.

This is no surprise as it’s made by Apple with seamless macOS integration and the best privacy protections for Mac users of any browser out there.

However, it still doesn’t protect your IP address and your ISP can still see your browsing activity – which is where a VPN can help and why there are good reasons to use a VPN with a Mac .

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the VPNs that work best with Safari, offering both excellent speed and security while still providing a hassle-free browsing experience.

Quick Navigation

Is There A Dedicated VPN for Safari?

Does apple provide a vpn for safari, what makes a good vpn for safari, 2. private internet access (pia), 3. expressvpn, 4. surfshark, 5. cyberghost, comparison table.

Before we begin, it’s important to be aware that you can’t just get a VPN for Safari on its own .

The reason for this is that Apple has locked-down Safari so that VPN plugins can’t potentially compromise its security.

Instead, to use a VPN with the Safari browser, you’ll need to set up a VPN for your entire Mac.

This can be done either through a Mac compatible VPN or macOS’s built-in VPN settings if the VPN provider supports manual setup.

Using a system-wide VPN on your Mac ensures that all internet traffic, including Safari, is encrypted and routed through the VPN server.

There are some VPNs however that support “split-tunneling” which means you can configure them just to work with Safari although this feature isn’t as common on Mac VPNs as it is on Windows.

At the moment, only the Private Internet Access (PIA) VPN offers this on a Mac (more on this below).

Pros of Using a System-wide VPN on a Mac:

  • Applies to all apps on your Mac, not just Safari.
  • Offers a higher level of privacy for your Mac.
  • More reliable than browser-specific plugins.
  • Some VPNs like PIA support split tunneling so you can isolate them just to work with Safari.
  • Requires a subscription to a VPN service.
  • Split tunneling requires some configuration.
  • May impact the overall speed of internet connection across all apps, not just the browser.

Apple’s Private Relay , available with iCloud+, enhances privacy by hiding your IP address and encrypting your Safari browsing activity.

While it offers good protection for basic web browsing, it is not a replacement for a VPN .

You can read our analysis of Apple Private Relay vs VPNs for more on this.

When choosing the best VPN for Safari, there are a few factors to consider:

  • Speed : A VPN can slow down your browsing experience, so you’ll want one that offers consistently fast speeds, especially if you are using it for streaming, downloading or gaming.
  • Security : Look for VPNs with strong encryption (AES-256) and privacy features like kill switches, no-logs policies, and DNS leak protection.
  • Compatibility : Make sure the VPN is fully compatible with macOS (including a native Apple Silicon app) and works smoothly with Safari, either through a browser extension or native app.
  • Dedicated IP: A dedicated IP means that only you are using the IP address assigned to you. You’re not sharing it with multiple users including potentially cyber-criminals. This also means you’ll see less “captchas” and give you access to sites that may block dynamic IPs.

With these things in mind, here then are the VPNs that we found work best with Safari.

best vpn for mac - nordvpn

NordVPN is a great choice for Safari users who prioritize security and privacy.

Its “double VPN” feature ensures an extra layer of encryption and its strict “no-logs” policy is one of the most stringent of any VPN.

It also provides fast connection speeds which makes it especially good for streaming and gaming.

  • 5,400+ servers in 60+ countries.
  • CyberSec feature that blocks ads and malicious websites.
  • Strong AES-256 encryption with a strict no-logs policy.
  • Double VPN feature for additional security.
  • Obfuscated servers help bypass VPN blocks, perfect for regions with strict censorship.
  • Offers dedicated IP address.

You can read our full NordVPN for Mac review for more.

Pricing: Starting from $3.59/month + 3 months free for a standard 2 year subscription

split tunneling on mac in PIA

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a great choice for those that just want a VPN to work with Safari and nothing else thanks to its split tunneling feature.

PIA is the only VPN available for Macs that supports this. Although most VPNs support it on Windows, due to the security architecture in macOS, VPNs can’t usually offer it.

However, PIA has managed to find a way to do this meaning you can configure it for use with Safari.

Key Features:

  • Split tunneling allows you to use it just with Safari
  • Advanced privacy settings, including a kill switch and DNS leak protection
  • Open-source software for full transparency
  • Customizable encryption settings
  • Thousands of servers in over 80 countries
  • Built-in ad blocker (MACE) to block malware, trackers, and ads

The only thing we don’t like is that PIA requests your Mac admin username and password to install a “helper” for the client. This is probably in order to offer services like split tunneling but most VPNs don’t require this.

Check out our full review of PIA for Mac for more.

Pricing: $2.03/month for 3 year subscription (inc. 3 months free) or $3.33/month for 1 year

Are there any free VPNs for Safari? There are free VPNs that will work with Safari although we’d recommend using one of the selections in our best free VPNs for Mac reviews. However, be aware that free VPNs don’t offer the same security, surfing speed or protections as paid services. Free VPNs, like hide.me, typically come with limitations such as reduced speeds, limited server locations, and monthly data caps. They may also sell your user data. If you use Safari regularly for streaming, gaming, or sensitive tasks, a paid VPN is usually the better choice.

Do I need a browser extension to use a VPN with Safari? No, unlike some browsers such as Chrome, Safari does not support VPN extensions or add-ons. You must use a VPN that’s compatible with macOS app that protects all of your internet traffic, including Safari. Only Private Internet access supports “split tunneling” which allows you to configure it so that the VPN connection only works with Safari and no other apps on your Mac.

Will a VPN slow down my Safari browsing experience? VPNs can slow down your connection due to encryption and rerouting your traffic through servers, but premium VPNs like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark are optimized for speed. These VPNs offer high-speed servers and in our experience, there’s no noticeable slow-down in surfing speeds.

Can I access geo-restricted content with a VPN on Safari? Yes, using a VPN allows you to bypass geo-restrictions by connecting to servers in different countries. This means you can access streaming services, websites, and content that may not be available in your region.

Is it legal to use a VPN with Safari? In most countries, using a VPN is legal, including for browsing on Safari. However, certain countries may restrict or block VPN usage, so it’s important to check local regulations before using one. VPNs listed here offer obfuscation features (like NordVPN’s obfuscated servers) that help in regions with strict VPN bans. Of course, using a VPN with Safari for criminal activity is not legal.

How do I set up a VPN on Safari? Setting up a VPN on Safari is straightforward. Download the VPN app (or browser extension if available) from the provider’s website, install it on your Mac, log in, and choose the server in the country you want to connect to. Once connected, your Safari browsing will be encrypted and routed through the VPN in that country.

Can a VPN block ads on Safari? Yes, some VPNs, like Surfshark and NordVPN, offer built-in ad-blocking features. These features block trackers, ads, and malicious websites, making your Safari browsing experience faster and more secure. We’d also recommend checking-out our guide the the best ad-blockers for Safari if this is a concern.

How do I know if my VPN is working on Safari? To check if your VPN is working, visit a site that shows your IP address (such as “whatismyip.com”) and see if it matches the location of the server you’re connected to. If the IP address displayed is different from your actual location, your VPN is functioning correctly.

“Windscribe” also offers “split tunneling” for Macs. It has a very user friendly app and allows a “reasonable” amount of personal computers and phones on an account; there isn’t a set number you can have set up on one account. It also has iPhone and Android apps that look and function the same way as the computer one does, included in the price. If you want to try it out they also offer the service with 10Gb per month and only 10 countries, but the paid service offers unlimited data, no throttling or strings attached and servers in 69 countries and 134 cities. The built in ad-blocker works wonders. “Windscribe” has been a really great choice for me on both my Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Thanks for the tip. Windscribe was our pick as one of the best free VPNs for Macs although the split tunneling feature is limited to IP addresses and hostnames only.

In 2016 I paid $59 for a life time subscription for “PureVPN” which worked ok, but in 2021 they cancelled it so I contacted the merchant who sold it to me and they gave me a lifetime subscription to “VPN Unlimited” and it works great. I used it on a Macbook Pro 2015 and now have been using it on a Macbook Air M1 with Sonoma 14.1.

Thanks for sharing – sounds like you got a great deal there! We’ve not tried VPN Unlimited yet but will take a look.
