Make your own Ultimate Travel Bag

Have you made the Ultimate Travel Bag yet?  I have always loved the look of this bag and was initially intimated by this pattern when my local Quilt Shop asked me to teach this class.  This bag pattern (from byannie.com) has a lot of bells and whistles!  I love the detachable adjustable strap, the exterior pockets and compartments and I especially love the interior!  The inside is full of all the good things!  Who doesn’t love an interior that is lined with mesh pockets and zippered compartments?  This interior provides easy visibility of contents, extra stretchiness and, best of all, adds absolutely no bulk to the seams.  Let me tell you all about it how to make your own Ultimate Travel Bag!

This bag is the perfect travel companion.  It is very functional and  is carry-on compliant and sure to turn heads wherever you go.  I already mentioned the carrying strap and the inside pockets with mesh. I forgot to mention that it has a handy strap across the back that helps secure the bag to rolling luggage.  Yay!

The Ultimate Travel Bag measures 18½” long x 13¾”H x 8″D.

The Ultimate Travel Bag is the perfect size to carry a small sewing machine.  I can fit my little Kenmore or my Featherweight!   If you intend to carry something heavy such as a sewing machine in your bag, I used a foam core board for the base.  It worked perfect!

T he Ultimate Travel Bag – construction

I recommend you read the entire pattern before you start making this bag.  This will help you understand where and how all the pieces fit together.  After review of all the materials, you should quilt your fabric sandwich and cut all your pieces.  This pattern comes with some awesome pattern piece markers – so nice to keep organized!

I took the first day to cut and prep all my fabric and materials.  The next day, I started with assembly.  This bag has lots of parts and pieces.  You don’t want to skip ahead or assume too much!

I think the interior binding was the trickiest part.  I will admit that having a stiletto was completely necessary.  I would recommend taking your time and going slow.  The video even has a place where folks have asked questions and received answers.  That’s very handy!  Here is a sneak peek of what you can expect in the Pattern/Video .

I’ve made 4 of these bags, so far. I love this pattern and I think Annie Unrein has the best teaching style out there. That wonderful teaching video is a few years old and surprisingly, I can still post a question or statement in the comments section and Annie will respond within days. I was amazed at her dedication.

Would love to make this bag for a living

I would like to get the material for the travel bag, Could you please give me the price for the kit And the the CD. Many thanks Margaret

Hello Margaret, You can purchase the supply kit at Craftsy. You will need to supply your own fabric. The instructional video is helpful as well. All the info is listed in the post above. Please let me know if I can assist you further. Thanks! ~Nicole

Hi Annie, I really want to purchase your pattern but I would like to know if it includes the online steps like on craftsy I cannot purchase that one because I travel and it won’t allow me to purchase it out of the states.

Thank you and kind regards NATALIA Ramos

Hi Natalia! This pattern is from byAnnie.com and is also available on her website. Happy Sewing!

How do I get a copy of the pattern for this adorable bag

The pattern (with video instructions) is linked above. If you don’t have a Blueprint subscription, I believe they have a free trial you can take advantage of! Happy Sewing!

How long did it take you to construct this bag? Including cutting?

That is a great question! I spent one day cutting and prepping all of the various pieces. The next day was spent on assembly. The videos and make it especially easier to assemble. Happy sewing!

Thank you….but I have a feeling you must work more efficiently than I do! : ) : )

I would like to know how long the prep of the components? I know that quilting the fabric, prepping the strap, covering it, etc cutting out all the pieces, binding the mesh . An entire day? Sounds like it.

I usually set aside 2 days to make a bag of this size. The first day to prep all the pieces and the second day to sew it together. Once you make one, you will be so glad you invested the time!

Would it be easy to substitute fabric for the mesh for the inside pockets?

Lauren, I am making this bag right now. The directions say you can use fabric for the inside pockets. That is what I am going to do using contrasting fabric.

Does this bag typically fit under an airline seat? I typically travel with carry-on only luggage and use a carry-on size suitcase plus one additional bag. Thanks!

This bag is bulky and better suited for the overhead cabinets. Besides – you probably don’t want to put it where people’s shoes have been.

Diy sewing travel kit: free pattern, sewing travel kit.

This is a FREE pattern + tutorial to make a pouch that you can use to store some basic sewing tools when you are away from home.

travel kit

The tools and notions that you can find in premade travel sewing kits are often of very poor quality. As a sewer you have the tools and notions you need, but you might not have a practical little pouch. This case neatly organizes everything that you might need during your travels to repair your clothes or to sew on buttons. Let’s get to work!

This travel pouch has:

  • a zippered pocket for spare buttons, and spools or bobbins with sewing thread
  • 3 slide-in pockets for scissors, seam ripper, a fabric marker, a seam gauge or tape ruler
  • a felt base to hold needles, pins and safety pins.

This project is doable for everyone with basic sewing machine skills. You’ll learn how to insert a little zipper and attach bias tape.

The finished project dimensions are: overall 5 ½ х 9 ½ inch, folded 5 ½ х 4 inch

THE SUPPLIES

  • a piece of fabric 27 x 6 inch (canvas or twill recommended),
  • 32 inch bias tape (min. ¾ inch wide)
  • 5 ½ x 3 inch piece of felt
  • A regular zipper, minimum of 5 inch (you can easily trim a bigger zipper)
  • 2 inch of corded elastic
  • a small button
  • 9 ½ x 5 ½ inch firm stabilizer

Your basic sewing tools: fabric scissors, a fabric marker, a sewing machine, sewing thread

THE PATTERN PIECES

Print the 3 PDF pages . Cut the 6 pattern pieces. Copy them on your fabric.

  • Cut pattern pieces A-E out of your main fabrics, with the right side of your fabric facing up. Cut pattern piece D 2 times. I used a different fabric for pattern piece E, the pocket.
  • Cut out pattern piece A also out of firm stabilizer or fusible wadding if you want to add a little volume.
  • Cut pattern piece F out of felt.

pattern piece

1. Take piece E (pocket) and press down the top edge ⅜ inch. Then turn over another ⅜ inch, press and pin down. Next, stitch ¼ inch from your top folded edge.

sewing machine travel case pattern

2. Take piece E, pin and baste stitch it to piece D along the sides and the bottom at ¼ inch.

Baste stitching is a temporary stitching to hold 2 pieces together. Use a big stitch length. You don’t need to backstitch.

3. Take your temporary fabric marker and mark a line 2 inch in from the left side of your pocket piece. Then, mark another line 1 inch from that. Topstitch on these 2 lines.

sewing machine travel case pattern

4. Take piece F, pin and sew it right sides together to pieces D and E, as shown in the picture, use ¼ inch seam allowance.

5. Press the seam from Step 4 towards your main fabric.

sewing machine travel case pattern

6. Topstitch your seam from Step 4– topstitching should be ⅛ inch from the edge on the main fabric. You can use an edge joining foot for this, in order to keep a perfect ⅛ inch seam.

7. Take piece B and sew it right sides together to the left side of your zipper. Use a zipper foot to sew close to the zipper teeth.

Use a zipper foot to sew close

8. Press the seam from Step 7 towards your fabric and topstitch it down, ⅛ inch from the zipper teeth, using a zipper foot.

9. Take piece C, pin and sew it right sides together to the right side of your zipper.

pin and sew

10. Press the seam from Step 9 towards your fabric and topstitch it down ⅛ inch from the edge.

11. Take the zipper piece, pin and baste stitch them all the way around to the right side of the second D piece, using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Make sure the top and bottom edges of your zipper are closed shut as much as possible.

take zipper piece, pin and baste

12. Take the fabric pieces B+C (Step 11) and pieces D+E (Step 6). Put them right sides together. Align the left edge and pin together (as shown in the 2nd picture). Sew together using a ¼ inch seam allowance.

sewing machine travel case pattern

13. Press your seam from Step 12 towards your zipper pocket.

sewing machine travel case pattern

14. Topstitch this seam ⅛ inch from the edge on the pocket.

15. Fuse the interfacing or wadding to piece A using a hot iron.

If you want to add quilting lines on piece A, do so now using your heat erasable marker . Quilt piece A to your stabilizer. Afterwards, iron out your quilting lines.

sewing machine travel case pattern

16. Depending on how close you stitched to the zipper teeth, and how wide and precisely you stitched your seams, the piece with the zipper might be longer than fabric piece A. Trim both pieces to the same size by cutting off a strip from the felt piece.

17. Take pieces B-F and stitch them wrong sides together with piece A. Sew all the way around with your stabilizer sandwiched in between at ¼ inch. Trim the edges, if necessary.

sew all the way around with stabilizer

18. Take your corded elastic and stitch it down as shown in the photo. It should be placed in the center of the short side of piece A with the felt behind it.

sewing machine travel case pattern

19. Take your 32 inch long strip of bias tape. Pin your bias binding all around the edges of your pouch with the right sides together.

Make sure to fold over the first edge and then overlap a little extra from the opposite end on top of it so that there are no raw edges showing.

sewing machine travel case pattern

20. Fold the bias strip over the edge. Press down, pin and topstitch close to the edge of the bias tape, on the outside of the pouch. This will catch in the underneath of the bias tape. You can use your edge joining foot again for this. Be careful going around the curved edges at the corners as they will be a little tricky to get around.

sewing machine travel case pattern

21. Mark your button placement using your heat erasable marker. Sew on your button with a hand needle.

sewing machine travel case pattern

22. Something extra I added to this pattern: I noticed that my little stork scissors fell out easily, so I added a little elastic with a snap button to attach them.

23. Finally! Time to load up your travelling sewing kit with your supplies. What tools or notions do you think are indispensable when travelling?

sewing machine travel case pattern

I hope you will enjoy making this pouch and use it a lot! It’s also a lovely handmade gift for a friend. Who doesn’t need a sewing travel kit, right? You don’t need to go far to be in need of a little repair from time to time :-)

7 DIY Travel Bag Patterns So You Can Travel In Style

Have you ever noticed that when you are shopping for various travel bags, there are two options? You can get cheaply made nylon bags or extremely overpriced “bland” looking bags.

But how do we get around these two options? The answer is simple: DIY travel bags.

Today, I want to go over the different types of travel bags and supplies and how to create them, and then show you some beautiful travel bag patterns that you can use to create your traveling accessories.

Page Contents

Types of Travel Bags

Before we jump into the how-to or the patterns list, I want to go over the different kinds of bags categorized as “travel bags.” Remember that this post focuses on travel bags you can create, not factory-made luggage.

  • Jewelry bag
  • Toiletry bag
  • Garment bag
  • Travel tote
  • Backpack

Supplies You Will Need to Make Your Own Travel Bag

The supplies you will need will vary depending on the specific item you are making. The following list will include various notions and supplies you will need to make different travel bags.

  • Travel bag sewing pattern
  • Interfacing for structure
  • Trimming (optional for decoration)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Sewing machine

How Do You Make a Travel Bag?

Now that we know the different types of travel bags and the supplies we may need to create them let’s go over the steps of making a travel bag.

I recommend using a pattern when doing a project like this since it will have detailed instructions for the different steps. These are essential steps to give you an idea of what’s involved when making a large bag.

  • Step 1: Choose a pattern

When looking for the perfect pattern, you want to make sure you are looking for one that is within your skill level and will meet your traveling needs. There are thousands of travel bag patterns available on the market, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something that will work for you.

  • Step 2: Cut all fabric and interfacing pieces

The pattern you choose either has specific cutting instructions or may even come with templates you can use to cut the fabric pieces you will need. Remember the age-old tip: “measure twice, cut once.”

  • Step 3: Attach notions to the fabric pieces

Where you add the notions will vary depending on which ones you are using and when the pattern tells you to add them. I wanted to include this so you can think about when you need to add them. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing you forgot to add a D-ring or other notions and have to take apart part of your project and add it. *Speaking from personal experience*

  • Step 4: Sew the exterior pieces together

The pattern writer will do a great job of explaining how to do this step. Ensure you keep your raw edges lined up at all times to ensure an even seam allowance.

  • Step 5: Create and attach the straps

This is a fun step; you can make straps from various materials like canvas, leather, quilting cotton, denim, nylon strapping, etc. Some patterns will have you attach the straps before you sew the lining and exterior parts together. Others will have you connect them to the exterior first.

  • Step 6: Sew the lining pieces together

This step will be where you add pockets for the bag’s interior and create the lining. I like to use a fun, funky fabric inside my bags. It gives it a little more personality and pizazz.

Tip: If you use a weekender bag pattern and want a sizeable wide-open bag, you can skip creating a lining. To conceal the raw edges of the exterior parts, take bias tape and sew it along all the raw edges. This will give the bag a more finished look; plus, when you wash it, the edges won’t unravel.

  • Step 7: Sew the lining and exterior parts together

This final step is always exciting since you see the entire bag come together. Follow the instructions in the pattern you’ve used to complete the bag. Once you’ve finished the bag, take a moment to admire your work and show it off to your friends and family!

7 Travel Bag Patterns For You To Peruse

For this compilation, I tried to find a good selection of travel bag patterns to give you a glimpse into what is possible with a bit of fabric, thread, and imagination. Without further ado, let’s dive into this fun collection!

This study illustrates the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth and land use changes in Samara city, Russia from 1975 to 2015. Landsat satellite imageries of five different time periods from 1975 to 2015 were acquired and quantify the changes with the help of ArcGIS 10.1 Software. By applying classification methods to the satellite images four main types of land use were extracted: water, built-up, forest and grassland. Then, the area coverage for all the land use types at different points in time were measured and coupled with population data. The results demonstrate that, over the entire study period, population was increased from 1146 thousand people to 1244 thousand from 1975 to 1990 but later on first reduce and then increase again, now 1173 thousand population. Builtup area is also change according to population. The present study revealed an increase in built-up by 37.01% from 1975 to 1995, than reduce -88.83% till 2005 and an increase by 39.16% from 2005 to 2015, along w...

Land use/Cover Change in Russia within the context of global challenges. The paper presents the results of a research project on Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) in Russia in relations with global problems (climate change, environment and biodiversity degradation). The research was carried out at the Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University on the basis of the combination of remote sensing and in-field data of different spatial and temporal resolution. The original methodology of present-day landscape interpretation for land cover change study has been used. In Russia the major driver of land use/land cover change is agriculture. About twenty years ago the reforms of Russian agriculture were started. Agricultural lands in many regions were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulted in accelerated erosion and reduced biodiversity. Between the natural factors that shape agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. The study of long-term and short-ter...

Annals of The Association of American Geographers

Land use and land cover change is a complex process, driven by both natural and anthropogenic transformations (Fig. 1). In Russia, the major driver of land use / land cover change is agriculture. It has taken centuries of farming to create the existing spatial distribution of agricultural lands. Modernization of Russian agriculture started fifteen years ago. It has brought little change in land cover, except in the regions with marginal agriculture, where many fields were abandoned. However, in some regions, agricultural lands were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulting in accelerating erosion and reduced biodiversity. In other regions, federal support and private investments in the agricultural sector, especially those made by major oil and financial companies, has resulted in a certain land recovery. Between the natural factors that shape the agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. In the North European and most of the Asian part of the ...

In recent decades, Russia has experienced substantial transformations in agricultural land tenure. Post-Soviet reforms have shaped land distribution patterns but the impacts of these on agricultural use of land remain under-investigated. On a regional scale, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of knowing to what extent the variations in the compositions of agricultural land funds may be explained by changes in the acreage of other land categories. Using a case analysis of 82 of Russia’s territories from 2010 to 2018, the authors attempted to study the structural variations by picturing the compositions of regional land funds and mapping agricultural land distributions based on ranking “land activity”. Correlation analysis of centered log-ratio transformed compositional data revealed that in agriculture-oriented regions, the proportion of cropland was depressed by agriculture-to-urban and agriculture-to-industry land loss. In urbanized territories, the compositions of agricultura...

Despite harsh climate, agriculture on the northern margins of Russia still remains the backbone of food security. Historically, in both regions studied in this article – the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) – agricultural activities as dairy farming and even cropping were well adapted to local conditions including traditional activities such as horse breeding typical for Yakutia. Using three different sources of information – official statistics, expert interviews, and field observations – allowed us to draw a conclusion that there are both similarities and differences in agricultural development and land use of these two studied regions. The differences arise from agro-climate conditions, settlement history, specialization, and spatial pattern of economy. In both regions, farming is concentrated within the areas with most suitable natural conditions. Yet, even there, agricultural land use is shrinking, especially in Karelia. Both regions are prone to being af...
