Cruises to the Canary Islands

Canary Islands cruises give you a taste of Spain in a subtropical setting. The combination of country and location off the coast of Africa creates an exotic travel experience that blends the rhythm of island life with the cultural influences of Europe. Add in smoldering volcanoes, otherworldly-looking sand dunes, golden beaches, and colorful architecture, and you have a recipe for travel nirvana.

Our cruises to the Canary Islands will take you to some of the most beautiful destinations in this archipelago. On Tenerife, take a trip to the top of Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, with views across the sapphire ocean and other distant islands. Explore Gran Canaria’s rugged, forested interior and the sand dunes of Maspalomas. In Lanzarote, indulge in sizzling steaks and fish cooked over intense geothermal heat from a volcanic vent—it’s just one of many surprises you’ll uncover on a Europe cruise to the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands Cruise Highlights

National parks.

The Canary Islands are home to exquisite national parks rich in flora and fauna. You’ll find a varied terrain that changes from park to park. Spain’s highest mountain, the often snow-capped Teide, dominates Tenerife’s Teide National Park, with spectacular views and high-altitude hiking. In Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, you can ride a camel past dunes, and enjoy a lunch of steak cooked over the sizzling heat of an active volcano.

The Canary Islands offer a great variety of beaches, from sparkling black sand on Lanzarote to the rippling dunes at Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria. Tenerife’s finest beach is Las Teresitas, with golden sand imported from the Sahara. Las Canteras, located on Gran Canaria, is considered one of the best urban beaches in Spain. Fuerteventura, meanwhile, is known for its long sweeps of golden sand; head to Flag Beach to watch acrobatic kite surfers.

Food & Wine

The Canary Islands have a distinctive cuisine. Try papas arrugadas, which are tiny boiled potatoes served with salt and spicy mojo sauces. Fuerteventura is famous for its majorero cheese. Sample ropa vieja, a meaty stew, and dine on seafood paired with gofio, a paste of roasted grain flour. You’ll find papaya, mango, pineapple, avocado, and Canarian bananas piled high on market stalls. Meanwhile, there are magnificent wines to try on every island, grown in the rich volcanic soil.

Featured Canary Islands Cruise Ports

Tenerife, canary islands.

Popular Tenerife combines historic cities with golden beaches, lush valleys, and otherworldly volcanic scenery. Take the cable car up Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, for lunar landscapes and spectacular views. Explore bustling Santa Cruz with a guide, taking in the sights and stopping for tapas. Relax on the golden sand of Las Teresitas beach, and visit the 15th-century university town of La Laguna to admire the colorful palaces, churches, and convents.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote is starkly beautiful, with active volcanoes and rippling sand dunes that seem to change color as the sun crosses the sky. Try the local Malvasia wine, and admire the work of architect César Manrique, whose bright white buildings with green and blue woodwork are apparent all over the island. The Jameos del Agua, a restaurant in a fern-draped grotto inside a lava tube, is one of his most spectacular structures.

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Las Palmas, the capital of lush, mountainous Gran Canaria, has an enchanting old center, Vegueta, the cobbled alleys lined with whitewashed houses adorned with traditional Canarian wooden balconies. See the house where Columbus stayed in 1492 before setting out for the Americas. Out of town, explore the coastal village of Agaete, where cliffs plunge straight into the sea and mangoes, oranges, and even coffee are grown. Or head to Maspalomas in the south to wander through the rolling sand dunes.

Canary Islands Cruise Itineraries

Explore the Canary Islands on our itineraries of 10 to 13 nights, sailing from Barcelona, Lisbon, Southampton, and Fort Lauderdale. You could combine the Canary Islands with Morocco and Spain, or ports in mainland Spain and Portugal, as well as the Portuguese island of Madeira. Transatlantic voyages call at Tenerife, too, on their way between Europe and the U.S.

Canary Islands Travelling Tip

Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the four main islands that make up the Canary Islands and with a Canary Island cruise, you can choose what island-hopping you would like to do to tailor the holiday of your dreams.

The most common ‘weather problem’ in the Canary Islands is sunburn and sunstroke. Always wear plenty of sunscreen and keep well-hydrated to avoid these issues.

Top Canary Islands

Each island in the Canaries is quite distinct from its neighbour in what it has to offer, giving those enjoying a Canary Island cruise a chance to sample a little bit of everything. Below, we give you a flavour of each island and what you may expect.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest island , but it is fondly referred to as the ‘ Continent in Miniature ’, with scenic diversity across this neatly rounded island making it one of the Canary Islands’ most popular.

Gran Canaria’s interior is rugged with mountains and lush green with subtropical forests. As a popular hiking destination, it has well-marked trails, enabling even the most novice explorer to enjoy its impressive views.

The colourful capital of Las Palmas is famed for its vibrant nightlife, but stroll a little further into its neighbourhoods and there is plenty of history to discover.

For the best beaches, head south to Maspalomas . With 17km of glorious coastline, consisting of wide sandy beaches and shallow waters, it is a beach-lovers paradise. --> Gran Canaria cruises

Interesting fact on Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are not named after the yellow bird, but instead ‘Canaria’ is the Latin word for dog. It is thought that when the first Europeans arrived, they found large dogs on the island of Gran Canaria. However, alternative reports suggest the islands could be named after what the Romans called ‘sea dogs’, referring to the seals that inhabited the island.

Tenerife is the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands . It has plenty to offer visitors looking for sun-filled days at the beach, with an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops along its main resorts of Playa Las Americas , Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of La Laguna offers a haven for those seeking culture. It is the oldest example of an unfortified colonial town with architecture dating back to between the 15-17th century. Here, you can spend the day exploring fine cathedrals, churches and historical monuments.

Step a little further inland and you will discover the wild side of Tenerife at the Teide National Park . This jaw-dropping landscape of craters, volcanoes and rivers of petrified lava encircle Tenerife’s highest peak, Mount Teide, also a volcano, which stands 3,718m above sea level. --> Tenerife cruises

Visiting tip for Tenerife

Tenerife is host to the world’s second largest carnival, after Rio de Janeiro. For two weeks in February, the spirit of the fiesta fills the island with spectacular, colourful parades and lively music and dancing.

Lanzarote is famous for its stunning landscape, featuring volcanic caves , lakes of lava and craters, making it quite a unique destination to visit. A trip to Timanfaya National Park is a must, when in Lanzarote, to get a full appreciation of this epic terrain.

The black sands are characteristic of the island, but for those yearning for golden beaches, Lanzarote has plenty of those too. One of the best can be found at Papagayo, where snorkelling in the clear waters is also a big attraction.

Lanzarote is a chic, stylish island and this is mainly due to its local, visionary architect, César Manrique. His artistic influence fought against the appearance of high-rise buildings and instead focused on bringing together art and nature, using a model based on sustainability. Take time to visit one of the Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism to gain an appreciation of Lanzarote’s creative spirit. --> Lanzarote cruises

Interesting fact on Lanzarote

The last volcanic eruption on the island was in 1824, but there is still a significant amount of heat just below the surface; in fact, enough to cook a meal! Visit El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park and you can see how this in action.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of the least developed islands and quieter in its character, however it still has plenty to offer. The pristine coastline of the island has a colossal 150km of white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters . With a cooling sea-breeze, which is claimed to contain beneficial, relaxing negative ions, this the perfect place to escape from it all.

The Atlantic breeze across the island creates waves of up to 2m and has given Fuerteventura a long tradition of windsurfing and kite surfing that attracts water sports enthusiasts from around the world.

Draw yourself away from the beaches and you will find pretty, traditional white-washed villages and towns offering Spanish tapas and local wines. --> Fuerteventura cruises

Fuerteventura fascinating fact

One of the island’s most famous delicacies is its Majorero cheese . Made from goat’s milk, this delicious cheese is widely available, but also has its own dedicated cheese shop.

Best time to visit the Canary Islands

As a year-round sunshine destination, the Canary Islands will provide a glorious holiday at almost any time of year. In mid-summer, it can become particularly warm with average temperatures reaching the high 20 °C .

Temperatures are still warm and reach the low 20 °C between December and February, however many visitors choose to seek out winter sunshine here at this time of year, so it can become busy.

Spring and autumn still have temperatures that allow days at the beach, but without the influx of tourists, these are normally considered the ideal time to visit the island.

Top Packing Tip

If you are considering visiting Teide National Park or one of the other more mountainous areas, pack a few extra layers, as it can get chilly when higher up.

Canary Islands Sights

From active and adventurous, to cultural and chilled, there is a wide variety of great things to see and do when taking a cruise around the Canary Islands. Below are the things that have caught our imagination:

Whale watching in Tenerife

Off the south west coast of Tenerife up to 26 species of whales can be found, offering a potential once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these majestic marine mammals in their own natural habitat. Ethical guided tours are available with marine biologist guides. They will help you identify baleen whales, killer whales, dolphins, pilot whales and even the giant of the sea, the blue whale.

Jameos del Agua – Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua is an innovative and intriguing place, designed by Cesar Manrique from the naturally-occurring large openings in the lava tubes that have created two large caves. One of these caves hides a natural, clear lake that is home to thousands of albino crab species. The second is designed as a concert hall, delivering a magical evening out for its visitors

Las Palmas Cathedral – Gran Canaria

Las Palmas Cathedral is credited for being one of the most striking buildings in Gran Canaria, if not on the whole of the Canary Islands and with its beautiful bell tower and old, colourful stained-glass windows, it is clear to see why. It was the first church to be built on the Canary Islands, with work starting in 1500. However, it took one of the longest times to complete, finishing almost four centuries later. As a result, you can see a mixed influence in its architecture from Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical.

The remote island of El Hierro

If time allows and you are searching for true escapism, take a ferry from Tenerife to the remote island of El Hierro. This small, volcanic island only receives around 20,000 visitors per year. Here you can enjoy pure tranquillity, as you dive into its surrounding waters, discovering underwater cliffs that shelter colourful species of marine life, or hike through the enchanting, ancient forests where trees grow up to 8 metres tall.

Did you know…?

Several areas on the Canary Islands have been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve , including Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. These are internationally recognised as protected areas that demonstrate a balanced relationship between humans and nature and that encourage sustainable development.

Regional Dishes

A Spanish archipelago with African and American influences and having access to some of the freshest seafood in the world, the cuisine found on the Canary Islands is unique, fresh and full of flavour. These are some of the local favourites:

More of an accompaniment than a dish, this spicy sauce is served with nearly every traditional dish on the islands. Made of garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper and cumin, this hot sauce can be made as hot as the weather!

Sancocho Canario

This traditional dish takes the freshest fish from the Canary Islands’ own local resource and serves it whole, with sweet potato, gofio (a Canarian roasted grain flour) and papas arrugadas (Spanish wrinkled potatoes). A simple, healthy dish that also enjoys a side of Mojo picón for that extra boost of flavour.

Rancho Canario

To satisfy your hunger after a day’s exploring, try Rancho Canario; a thick noodle soup made with chicken, pork, chickpeas and a selection of vegetables, including potatoes.

A foodie tip

One of Tenerife’s local delights is its honey, however, don’t get confused if asking for ‘Miel de Palma’, which translates literally as ‘honey of Palma’. This is actually a sauce made from the sap of palm tree and is used as a cooking ingredient.

To add to your pub quiz knowledge!

Tenerife has the largest waterpark in Europe : Siam Park. With 185 square kilometres of grounds, visitors can enjoy an impressively long network of slides and the highest artificial waves in the world!

The waters around the Canary Islands are home to one of the largest hard-shelled turtles in the world. The endangered Loggerhead Turtle can reach up to three feet in length and live for up to 67 years.

The Canary Island of La Gomera is where the whistling language originated. Called ‘Silbo Gomero’, it was developed to communicate across wide valleys.

The Canary Islands were one of Christopher Columbus’ stopovers on his way to the Americas. Lots of parallels can therefore identified between the Canaries and Latin America, both in terms of architecture and accent.

Top Travelling Tip

As a year-round destination, even in the winter, the waters at most beach resorts are warm enough for a swim, so bring your swimsuit! However, if you are a hiker, it is best not to plan your trip during the summer, as the heat can be a little too much!

Cruising The Canary Islands: Day-To-Day On Azamara's 7-Night Voyage

There is so much adventure and excitement to be enjoyed in this spectacular destination..

Azamara boat

Unless you have European friends or relatives, the Canary Islands might fly beneath your radar travel-wise. But they shouldn't. These volcanic islands off the coast of Morocco belong to Spain and lure several million travelers annually from Europe, many of them Brits and Germans seeking sun and relaxation. Most Americans can get their share of both closer to home, but the Canary Islands—you may be familiar with Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma—are worth visiting for other reasons, namely their dramatic landscapes, historic architecture and scenic beaches.

I recently explored four of the Canary Islands during one convenient trip: a seven-night sailing with Azamara , the boutique cruise line with three ships (four as of May 2022), each accommodating fewer than 700 guests. Azamara's Canary Islands Intensive Voyages range from seven to 11 nights and sail now through the end of February 2022 (on Azamara Journey ) and then in March 2023 (on Azamara Onward ) and March 2024 (on Azamara Pursuit ).

Here's what the seven-night itinerary was like, along with tips for making the most of time ashore.

Day 1: Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria

Azamara ships sailing Canary Islands itineraries embark and disembark in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . This allows for an easy flight connection via Madrid (or several other European airports, such as Frankfort, London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle). Plan to arrive a day early since parts of La Palmas are definitely worth exploring, namely the convivial beach boardwalk along Playa de Las Canteras and the Old Town neighborhood known as La Vegueta.

Playa de Las Canteras isn't far from the port and its outdoor cafes are a great place to sip a local Lanzarote rosé and enjoy tapas as you people watch at sunset, while La Vegueta is the place to wander amid pretty 16 th - and 17 th -century architecture. Have your taxi driver drop you in Plaza Santa Ana with its bronze canine statues (the Canary Islands aren't named for birds, but rather for dogs, "canum" in Latin) and twin-towered Cathedral of Santa Ana. And don't miss Casa de Colon, a colonial mansion with an elaborate bronze doorway.

The affordable and well-located AC Hotel Gran Canaria , a Marriott property, has comfortable rooms with balconies. It is a five-minute drive from the port and an easy walk from Playa de Las Canteras, but its antiquated 1970s design (a round tower with a main entry staircase and a freight-like street-to-lobby elevator) may present challenges for the less mobile.

Day 2: Funchal, Madeira

Madeira

While Madeira is a territory of Portugal and not part of the Canary Islands, Azamara itineraries include an overnight here—so consider it a welcome bonus! You'll arrive in the afternoon and not depart until mid-afternoon the next day, allowing time for a variety of shore experiences in colorful Funchal and around this extraordinary island.

For a mix of exploration and adventure, opt for Azamara's Off Road Into the Sunset excursion, a 4x4 tour that ventures onto off-the-beaten-path roads (both unpaved and paved) high in the Campanário Hills and offers a chance to walk for 30 minutes along a portion of Levada do Norte, one of the famously scenic irrigation canals that funnel water from the mountains to cities.

Next, you'll enjoy a glass of Poncha (a sweet local cocktail) in the charming village of Ponta do Sol, where the nightly sunsets are spectacular. One last treat is the view of Funchal's twinkling patchwork of lights and your Azamara ship in the harbor awaiting your return.

Day 3: Funchal, Madeira

cable cars

Azamara offers several shore excursions in Funchal, but if you love to walk (and have good stamina) the city is easily explored on your own. Here's what I recommend (note: all-aboard time is mid-afternoon). Set out mid-morning from the port for the 30-minute walk along Avenida Sa Carneiro (or grab a taxi) to the Teleferico do Funchal , a sightseeing cable car that will take you on a 15-minute/two-mile scenic ride above Funchal's rooftops and hillsides to the Monte, which sits at an elevation of 1,837 feet.

There's an option to take (and pay for) another cable car to the Botanical Gardens , but the garden itself is terraced with extremely steep walkways that make it challenging to navigate, so I don't recommend it. Instead, walk left from the cable car and explore the Monte Palace Tropical Garden , an oasis of blooming flora, Oriental gardens, ceramic tiles and an impressive collection of artwork from around the world.

Then, admire the Church of Our Lady of the Monte, before heading back on the cable car—or taking another more traditional ride: the Monte Toboggans . These wicker sleds have been careening two kilometers down asphalt streets for more than 100 years, guided by two "carreiros" in straw hats and thick-soled boots. If you choose this option, you'll have to take a taxi to town when the toboggan journey ends.

Once back, you'll have plenty of time to wander through Funchal's atmospheric Old Town and even try a tasting of Madeira wines. By 2:30 p.m. you'll be back onboard enjoying a late lunch on deck as you sail off to your next port.

Day 4: Santa Cruz de La Palma

La Palma

If you heard about the volcanic eruption in September 2021 in the Canary Islands, La Palma is the place where it happened. The volcano, Cumbre Vieja, finally calmed down by late December 2021 after 85 days, but its disruptive flow of lava and ash offered testament to the power of nature recreate this island's dramatic landscape.

A convenient way to appreciate La Palma's beauty is on Azamara's La Palma Secret Wonders excursion, a 4.5-hour bus journey into spectacular La Caldera de Taburiente National Park . This UNESCO World Heritage Site is scented by forests of towering pine trees and reminded me of one of my favorite places in the United States: Yosemite Valley. Afterwards, you'll visit a charming estate and gardens for wine and tapas and be back aboard your ship in time for lunch.

Then I suggest setting out on foot to explore Santa Cruz's Old Town on your own. Don't miss the centuries-old houses with traditional wooden balconies, located along the waterfront Avenida Maritima and painted in vibrant colors. Azamara also offers La Palma on Foot with Traditional Tapas, an excursion for those prefer a guided tour with local culinary treats.

Day 5: San Sebastian de La Gomera

La Gomera

Just when you thought nothing could top La Palma's visual beauty, along comes La Gomera . While this island of 20,000 inhabitants is famous for being one of the islands that Christopher Columbus visited on his 1492 transatlantic crossing (and tales of a romance with Beatriz de Bobadilla, wife of the island's ruler at the time, linger to this day), La Gomera is also renowned for its incredible landscapes, which are designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and can be appreciated on Azamara's seven-hour Gran Rey Valley excursion.

Highlights include a visit to the Los Roques viewpoint adjacent to Garajonay National Park to see several stunning rock formations, the most impressive of which is 3,526-foot Roque Agando. Garajonay is distinguished by its verdant landscape, 70 percent of which is covered with ancient Laurel Forest and crisscrossed by meandering streams. A stroll through part of the forest to a small restaurant for lunch (warning: most dishes are heavy on the garlic), several other scenic stops and a visit to the bohemian beach resort of Valle Gran Rey round out the day's activities.

Another, more active excursion, Hiking Through the Forest of Fables, immerses trekkers in the fairytale-like Laurel Forest and also makes stops for photos at Los Roques.

Day 6: Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Tenerife

Azamara's ships spend two days in Tenerife , calling on a pair of ports. If you prefer to explore on your own, today is the best day to do so since Santa Cruz de Tenerife has several top sights, both historic and modern, that are walkable from the port while Los Cristianos is mainly a resort area. Follow a signed path from the ship that offers access to Santa Cruz's historic center across Avenida de Anaga.

To the left, you'll find Plaza de España (and a friendly Tourist information center) and a short distance away stately Plaza del Principe Square, the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts with its classicist façade and the Baroque-style Church of St. Francis. The Old Town of Santa Cruz is just another 5-to-10-minute walk away and is home to 15 th -century La Concepcion Church in Plaza de la Iglesias as well as colorful La Noria Street.

A few blocks further is the Market of Nuestra Senora de Africa (aka La Recova ), where produce, meat, seafood and handicrafts are sold daily in this salmon-hued colonial-style market. From there, two top sights remain, Garcia Sanabria Park, known for its landscaped walking paths and botanical garden, and the Adan Martin Auditorium of Tenerife, an iconic white Santiago Calatrava-designed landmark that, like the Sydney Opera House, deserves to be viewed from every angle.

To spend a few hours at the beach, take a taxi to Playa de Las Teresitas, a wide arc of white sand (imported from the Sahara) located about six miles away.

Day 7: Los Cristianos, Tenerife

Masca

Sunny weather is Los Cristianos calling card, hence its popularity as a beach resort destination. And if you want to relax on the sand for the day, you can certainly do that on Playa de Los Cristianos. But you'll miss a chance to experience Tenerife's compelling visual wonders, which include a village perched on a slender ridge, a massive slumbering volcano and a distinctive 1,000-year-old tree.

They're all on the itinerary of Azamara's eight-hour Lost Village of Masca excursion, which begins with a stop to admire Los Gigantes, 2,600-foot cliffs rising from the wild Atlantic, and continues with more heart-stopping views as your bus navigates dozens of steep hair pin turns on the way to Masca village, built along a knife-edge ridge. At almost every turn, you can spot 12,188-foot-tall Mt. Teide, the tallest peak in Spain.

Back down at sea level, you'll explore Garachico, a pretty, coastal town, and then head to nearby Icod de Los Vinos to snap selfies with two distinctive dragon trees; one is 500 years old and the other 1,000 years old. You'll refuel along the way with an excellent tapas lunch at Mirador Garachico, which offers panoramic views of Mt. Teide and the sea. They call Tenerife "the island of 1,000 experiences" and this excursion only scratches the surface.

Day 8: Disembark in Gran Canaria

Many passengers will disembark and go straight to the airport, but those who are able to book flights after 3 p.m., can book a four-hour Old Quarter, Bandama Crater with Airport Transfer excursion to see the Las Palmas sights you missed if you didn't fly in a day early, along with Bandama Crater, located at 1,000 feet in elevation.

Onboard Azamara

Azamara onboard

Each of Azamara's four ships is almost identical, carrying about 680 passengers and offering elevated international cuisine in six dining venues and eight bars/lounges, including outdoor options. Geared to couples—most guests are in their fifties, sixties and seventies and Canary Islands sailings generally attract more Brits and Europeans than Americans—the ships feature an elegant, club-like ambience. There is music and entertainment nightly, ranging from production shows in the Cabaret Lounge to live band and DJ music in the Living Room, which has a dancefloor.

All Azamara ships have a pool and two hot tubs, a library, a Sanctum Spa and a fitness center, but no casino. Accommodations range from economical 158-square-foot Club Interior Staterooms to spacious 603-square-foot Club World Owner's suites, but most are 175-square-foot Club Veranda Staterooms. Cruise fares for seven-night Canary Islands itineraries run from $1,469 to $4,409 per person and include gratuities; select standard wines, beers and spirits; and special onboard destination-themed celebrations.

Before booking, be sure to read Azamara's recently updated health and safety protocols .

Luxury Cruises to the Canary Islands

Canary Island Highlights

Gran canaria.

It may take third place in terms of size, but almost half the population of the Canary Islands call Gran Canaria their home. It’s also a hugely popular port, seeing more than its fair share of holidaymakers flocking to the place (see what we did there?).

Dubbed the “continent in miniature”, things change quick in Gran Canaria, whether it’s the weather, the landscape, or the people. And that means there’s never a dull moment here. You might find lush foliage in the north, but do a 180, and you’ll see that the south is full of sandy, otherworldly dunes. And for the fun lovers, its lively resort towns keep the party going and going. Plus with plenty of activities, including watersports, diving, biking and sand- boarding, the adrenaline rarely lets up – until you head to Playa de las Canteras, the 3km beach that many a sunbather has called one of the world’s best city beaches.

A long-time favourite of the package-holiday crowd, there’s a lot more to Lanzarote than sunburns and crowded beaches. In fact, it’s had a bit of a glow up lately, with plenty of trendy bars and eco-villages popping up, along with a dose of culture that just might surprise you.

Known as the Island of Volcanoes, Lanzarote actually has 200 of the formations, but thankfully, only one of them is active. And we’d recommend checking it out. Found at the Timanfaya National Park, its Timanfaya volcano is a massive tourist attraction, letting the brave weave through tiny craters and lava tubes – you can even explore its terrain atop a camel! And if you’ve ever fancied volcano-roasted food, now’s your chance!

For a more traditional look at the island, be sure to swing by one of the many small fishing villages that still dot the shoreline - and don't leave without trying some of the deliciously, freshly caught seafood either.

Another Brit favourite, Tenerife shows no sign of slowing down as a region for revellers of all stripes to let their hair down: six million visitors make way for the Canaries’ largest island every year! If it’s sun, sea, sand and 24/7 entertainment you’ve come for, Tenerife will treat you right.

But for those looking for an escape from the crowds, the island still has plenty of off-the-tourist-trail spots and quieter resorts instore. Nestled amongst ancient towns and charming villages, you’ll find museums and modern art galleries stashed away, while Pico del Teide – a cable car ride away – offers up some truly peak views.

Dreaming of lying on a pristine white beach? Tenerife also boasts some beautiful stretches of sand, with La Tejita being one of the most unspoilt on the island.

Fuerteventura

Boasting 3000 hours of sunshine a year and a more relaxed, tranquil vibe compared to the company it keeps, Fuerteventura dials things down a notch or two. And for cruise-goers who love to keep it laid-back, that won’t be a problem at all – especially since the island has some of the Canaries’ biggest and best beaches.

And once you’re done being one with the waves, try making time for Fuerteventura’s incredible landscapes. Untouched by developers, here you’ll find white sand beaches and volcanic peaks galore. Scale the latter and you’ll see sweeping views of the calderas, an almighty hike that’s worth rewarding yourself with a taste of Majorero, the region’s famous local cheese, afterwards.

Canary Islands Cruises FAQs

The Islands’ subtropical climate means you’ll be in for a pleasant winter here. It’s mild and sunny, though you’ll still get a little rainfall here and there. If you’re looking to escape the drab British weather from November to February, you might want to go at another time, though its wintry walks and hikes still make for some incredible highlights.

There’s a reason for the Islands’ “eternal spring” nickname, it’s the season where the Islands really start to shine. As March shakes off the last of the winter, April and May bring the start of the peak weather with them. Expect rising temperatures, plenty of sun and what many call the Island’s best climate.

Unsurprisingly, the Canary Islands’ summers are sun-kissed and sweltering. June dries up the islands with practically zero rainfall, while August heats them up to their hottest. So if you can stand the heat, by all means make this the time to break the beach towel out.

The sun doesn’t go into hiding during the autumn in the Canaries, so you’ll still be experiencing peak weather. In fact, September and October are generally considered the best months of the year to travel here, so sunbathing will still very much be on the agenda.

AIDAprima review: 7 day fun Canary Islands & Madeira cruise

Would we recommend German cruise company AIDA? Here is what we think of our 7 day trip with the AIDAprima.

Big cruise ships.

We have never really been attracted to them.

The only cruise we have been on in the past was the transatlantic crossing from Brazil to Europe on the Club Med 2 , a staysail schooner that has a capacity of 380 passengers. However there were only about 100 of us on board.

The AIDAprima has a maximum capacity of 3.400 passengers.

Do we really want to go on a trip on a ship of that size?

We are hesitant.

Until last year.

We got a cruise newsletter in our mailbox with a very interesting looking trip. The Canary Islands and Madeira, a 7 day trip on the AIDAprima for less than €1.000 in total for 2 people.

From Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria , Funchal (Madeira) and back to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. With 2 full days at see.

We are in Tenerife at the moment of that trip.

So we book our first cruise trip on the AIDAprima .

Would we recommend German cruise company AIDA? Here is what we think of our 7 day trip with the AIDAprima.

7 days has to be doable, right. If we really dislike it, at least it is over in a couple of days.

Worth the risk.

Departure day, we can board from 3pm onwards.

The AIDAprima is the biggest ship in the harbor, it looks quite impressive.

Boarding is a breeze.

Our ocean view cabin is located on deck 4, cabin 4170. The same level as the reception area.

We are surprised by the size of the room. It is quite spacious because it can be transformed into a 4 bed cabin. The room, bathroom and furniture is simple but nice and well maintained. Not worn down or tired after being in service for 20 months. We didn’t have any expectations really, fair to say that we are actually quite excited now.

The AIDAprima has 18 decks.

That will keep us busy.

After walking around here and there, we both agree that the AIDAprima is massive. However there are not that many people on board. Perhaps a bunch still has to fly in, or people are taking the opportunity to visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The decor of the AIDAprima is quite modern, lovely colors, tastefully decorated. And everything is spotlessly clean. Lots of bars, restaurants and entertainment options for everyone.

Would we recommend German cruise company AIDA? Here is what we think of our 7 day trip with the AIDAprima.

But let’s be honest. We are here for the trip and for the food of course. Especially the food.

That is mainly what this travel review is about.

What is the quality of food like if you need to cater for over 3 000 people several times a day? We are very curious to see how the AIDAprima manages that.

We didn’t go to each and every single restaurant.

There are 12 restaurants, 3 snackbars and 14 cafés and bars on the AIDAprima. And only 7 days on board? That’s quite a challenge.

We quickly decided which were our favorites. And the ones that we would skip. Like the steak house and sushi bar.

So for our first dinner on the AIDAprima we book at Casa Nova. It is an a la carte restaurant, you can order whatever you like from the menu. Only drinks come at a surcharge.

Why not go to one of the buffet restaurants where food and drinks are all included? We asked one of the staff members at the AIDAprima reception what restaurant she would recommend. She told us that the buffet restaurants can be quite hectic the first night when there are lots of new passengers on board. Most passengers are there at 6pm right when the buffet restaurants open because they all want to sit at the best tables and can’t wait to raid the buffet. The à la carte restaurants are much quieter.

Makes sense, so on our walk we stop at the Casa Nova restaurant to make a dinner reservation.

As we make our way there for dinner, we see that the receptionist was right. Casa Nova is on deck 6, just like 3 other buffet restaurants. The entrances and hallways are quite packed with people waiting to go in. We want to add that this happened only on the first night.

After that people were more relaxed.

This à la carte restaurant on deck 6 serves Venetian specialties.

The Italian decor is elegant and cozy.

On the à la carte menu: antipasti, soups, salads, pasta, risotto, main dishes and desserts. You can order whatever you like, as much as you like. Alcohol and drinks are at a surcharge but the prices are very decent. Luc chooses an excellent €25 bottle of bardolino.

The food is delicious. The portion size is more than OK. We go for beef carpaccio, fish soup, pasta carbonara, ravioli marinara, Venetian style veal liver with polenta and slow cooked veal with artichokes and fondant potatoes. No dessert, we are stuffed.

Great dinner, excellent quality, very attentive service. Quiet atmosphere. The perfect place for a quiet romantic dinner for two if you want to avoid the crowd. Reservation required.

This one is definitely our favorite.

We will come here a few times for breakfast and dinner during our trip. The Brauhaus is located on deck 7 of the AIDAprima. What we like the most? The onboard brewery! Their AIDA Zwickel draft beer is delicious.

The food à la carte is complementary, drinks are not included.

No worries, a beer costs between €2,50 and €5 depending how large it is. On the menu are German classic dishes such as ham hock, schnitzel, roast duck, pretzels, cold cut platter, goulash soup, potato salad, Bratwurst, dumpling soup, bologna sausage salad.

The food here is perfectly cooked, it makes you feel like you are in Munich at a local Brauhaus. Highly recommendable. Reservation required although it was never full when we were there and walk ins were more than welcome.

Also on deck 7 is buffet restaurant Weite Welt, German for wide world.

This restaurant serves all types of cuisines. Every night has a special theme, such as Asian, French or mediterranean. Besides dinner specials you can always go for classics like pasta, salads, meat and veg. And a bunch of desserts.

Drinks here are also included and plentiful.

There is also an outdoor seating section for when the weather is great.

The food here is again very well cooked, lots of choice every night and the staff behind the buffets is super friendly. We especially remember the confit duck, grilled sea bream, anchovies, Italian cold antipasto station and the roast suckling pig. Absolutely delicious.

Our favorite buffet restaurant for dinner. No reservation needed.

Most buffet restaurants are open for breakfast.

The selection of food is more or less the same in every restaurant. And the choice is amazing: classic English breakfast items, yogurts, juices, fruits, cheese, charcuterie, salads, lots of different breads, Danish pastries, pancakes. All of excellent quality, well presented and organised. You won’t go hungry.

Coffee and tea are self service.

Not all restaurants are open for lunch.

If we are back from our walk in a town we like to go to the East buffet restaurant on deck 4. It serves delicious Asian food such as noodle soups, stir fries, steamed vegetables, dim sum, fruits and desserts. Drinks are complementary.

When the East buffet restaurant is not open or we are back on the boat after it closes, we usually go to the Fuego buffet restaurant on deck 14. It serves good classic burgers, pizza, pasta, salads and such. This restaurant can be packed with families and small(er) children.

Drinks here are complementary as well.

(Afternoon) Snacks

A few buffet restaurants open again for free coffee, tea and freshly baked cakes in the afternoon.

Occasionally we would see free coffee, tea and a small selection of sweet treats at the Lanai Bar on deck 8 of the AIDAprima.

If you want a savory snack, the Scharfe Ecke snack bar on deck 6 serves German Currywurst and fries practically all day long. The food is free, drinks are not. However you can sit down and just eat your snack, you don’t need to order a drink.

We are barely scratching the surface here of the food options on the AIDAprima.

We need an extra 2 weeks to go to each and every one. There is also a champagne bar, a Magnum ice cream parlor, Spanish tapas bar and a coffee bar with fresh patisserie.

OK, but what about your trip?

We can hear you ask.

Well, this 7 day island trip is great. The towns where the AIDAprima stops are lovely. You choose whether you just want to stroll around town and relax. Or book an excursion with the AIDAprima.

You can also rent a car or book with a travel company to drive you around the island for a couple of hours to see places. Do book that in advance, there is no possibility to rent a car on the spot. Some rental companies even have an office and car park in the harbor.

One of the highlights of our trip?

Funchal, its colorful bay, the buildings on the surrounding hillsides and its lovely busy streets. We also enjoyed the madeira wine tasting tour at Blandy’s. By the way, you are allowed to bring one litre of alcohol on board per person per day which is great.

Most fellow passengers on the AIDAprima were German, the second largest group was British.

Even though there are a bunch of people on board, surprisingly we never had the feeling that bars, the theatre or restaurants were overcrowded.

Internet connection is available on the AIDAprima but not included in the price.

However internet packages can be bought on board. Not surprisingly these packages are very expensive and the connection can be quite slow. You can buy internet connection per day for €3,49 to €19,99 or in packages from 150 MB (€19,99) until 6 000 MB (€119,99).

There is usually free internet connection in every cruise terminal or harbor. Perfect for checking emails and social media.

However it is not really suitable for uploading or downloading stuff.

Make sure to download movies and books before you leave on your trip.

Would we cruise again with AIDAprima and AIDA in general?

Yes, and we did already.

We booked exactly the same Canary island trip with the AIDAnova some time after our first trip with the AIDAprima.

The AIDAprima is kept spotlessly clean. The decor is modern, very new and elegant. We liked the choice and quality of the restaurants and food a lot. The staff was overall very polite, attentive and fast. Our room was comfortable, we felt at home for 7 days.

Negative points

Internet cost.

Prices on board are overall very reasonable.

However internet still is overpriced and connection is not great if you travel with certain cruise companies. We get that the satellite technology isn’t cheap, however we have traveled with other companies after this first trip with AIDAprima where internet on board was included in the total price and quite good.

Safety drill

The safety drill was a disaster.

The first night right before leaving the Santa Cruz de Tenerife harbor after dinner time a safety drill was announced on the AIDAprima. As we walked to our muster station with our safety jackets we could see that loads of people were clearly not participating or were perhaps not aware of the drill. We had our room keys scanned by a crew member.

Eventually the people who had showed up left little by little. And so did we after a while as the crew also lost interest.

The next day a new safety drill was announced on a leaflet in our room, clearly pointing out that it was mandatory. Buffets, restaurants and bars closed to force everyone to take part in the safety drill. Our group was made to sit down in the Bella Donna buffet restaurant. Over half an hour after hearing the safety information and measures over the intercom we were still sitting down.

Some passengers asked the AIDAprima crew who was walking around if this was normal. They would just shrug and walk off again.

Luc decided to read a book on his phone, there was nothing else to do. This set off one crew member who started yelling and screaming that he had to turn his phone off. When he asked why the crew member could only say ‘for safety reasons’ and threatened to call security. Putting his phone away wasn’t enough, he had to turn it off. Which Luc refused as other people were visibly on their phones as well.

The attitude of this crew member was outrageous and a disgrace. We reported this incident the day after at the reception where we heard that they would ’take note’ of it.

We didn’t let this affect our trip though.

Yes, we would book again with AIDAprima!
