My Chemical Romance Reveal Opening Acts for Rescheduled 2022 Reunion Tour Dates

They'll finally get a chance to "carry on" as My Chemical Romance 's pandemic-delayed reunion tour is finally happening stateside. The band just revealed the full rescheduled itinerary for North America after having to continually push back the shows due to COVID-19's impact on the touring industry.

The tour will now officially get underway Aug. 20 in Oklahoma City, with dates running through Oct. 29 which is the final scheduled night of the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas. The group has also added 14 new shows in 10 cities to the itinerary. See all cities, dates and venues listed below. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale this Friday (March 11) at 12N local time.

In addition, My Chemical Romance have filled the run with a variety of opening acts, including the reunited Midtown, Badflower, Turnstile, Taking Back Sunday, The Bouncing Souls, Thursday, Kimya Dawson, Meg Myers, Devil Master, Dilly Dally, Ghosh, Nothing, Shannon and the Clams, Soul Glo, Surfbort, The Homeless Gospel Choir, The Lemon Twigs, Waterparks and Youth Code all playing select dates.

My Chemical Romance announced their plans to reunite in the fall of 2019, though the seeds of a potential reunion were planted as far back as 2017.  "In 2017, we got in a room together to see what would happen," MCR wrote on Twitter in December of 2019 . "A couple more jam sessions and 39 days of rehearsals later, we’re ready to show you what we’ve learned. See you soon."

The band played their first reunion show at the Shrine Expo Concert Hall in Los Angeles on Dec. 20, 2019, reportedly grossing nearly $1.5 million for the band. The group then started announcing more and more tour dates for 2020, but the pandemic wiped out those plans.

The group will play in the U.K. and Europe this May and June, before focusing on the U.S. this fall. See all of their scheduled dates and get ticketing info here .

My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance finally kicked off their reunion tour on Saturday night (August 20) at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma after nearly 3 years of COVID-related postponements and from the sounds of it the show was well worth the wait. With singer Gerard Way rocking Heath Ledger-style Joker facepaint, the band launched into their second phase with their comeback single, “The Foundations of Decay,” before playing the 2004 Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge b-side “Bury Me in Black” for the first time since 2003.

According to Consequence of Sound , the super high-energy show included impressive drumming from new touring member Jarrod Alexander, whose kit was emblazoned with the appropriately grim MCR slogan message “BIG DEATH ENERGY.” The set also included another rarely played song, “This Is the Best Day Ever,” which appeared on their 2002 album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love , a track they haven’t played in more than 15 years.

The band’s first full tour since breaking up in 2013 was otherwise packed with plenty of crowd-pleasing emo ragers and fan favorites, including “Give ‘Em Hell, Kid,” “Teenagers,” “Bulletproof Heart,” “DESTROYA,” “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” and “The Ghost of You,” which Way dedicated to a recently deceased friend and producer Doug McKean as the crowd lit up their cell phone flashlights.

Operatic screamer Way also reportedly discussed some recent vocal issues that required a visit to a vocal coach and said he was anxious about how he would sound on the road. “My point us, thank you so f—ing much,” he said. “Let’s f—ing shut this place down!” And thus the band dove into a set-closing rush that included “Welcome to the Black Parade,” “Mama,” “Boy Division,” “Our Lady of Sorrows,” “Famous Last Words” and “Sleep” before returning for an encore of “Vampire Money” and their titanic 2004 single “I’m Not Kay (I Promise).”

After a one-off reunion show in Los Angeles in Dec. 2019, MCR announced a tour that was slated to kick off in 2020, but which was postponed repeatedly due to the pandemic. They finally hit the road in May with shows in Europe with their next show slated to hit Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Tuesday (August 23).

After years of anticipation and delay, My Chemical Romance finally kicked off their North American tour on August 20, 2022 in Oklahoma City, OK.

The long-waited North American return of the band was announced in January 2020 in elaborate fashion. A 13 plus minute video titled “A Summoning” took fans on a journey through every era of MCR, ending with the reveal of the tour cities and dates for later that year. Tickets sold out in less than six hours.

However, due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the dates would be pushed back to 2021. They were later pushed back once again for the same reason, which finally brings us to 2022 and the kick off show.

With frontman Gerard Way in a Joker tribute costume, complete with make-up, and a drum kit reading "BIG DEATH ENERGY," the band took the stage and opened with their latest single “The Foundations of Decay.” Then they shocked the crowd by going into “Bury Me in Black,” a song recorded as a demo and only ever released as a B-side. This was the first time the band had played this deep cut since 2003.

While all of their major albums were represented, the band also paid attention to their more experimental releases with two songs from Conventional Weapons and “Mastas of Ravenskroft” from the Mad Gear and Missile Kid EP. Black Parade and Danger Days dominated the setlist, with songs from the obvious singles (including “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” and “Welcome to the Black Parade”) to others like “Mama” and “DESTROYA.” “Ghost of You” from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was dedicated to the band’s longtime friend and producer Doug McKean who passed away suddenly in late July.

Oh, and at one point Gerard put Pop Rocks in his mouth and asked the crowd if they could hear it.

Embedded content is no longer available.

The setlist did feature another surprising return, too. “This is the Best Day Ever” was played live for the first time since 2005.

The main set ended with “Sleep.” But the band returned to the stage for a two song encore: “Vampire Money” and of course “I’m Not Okay.” “Helena” was listed on the printed setlist but was cut for time, unfortunately.

The tour is scheduled to keep going through October with stops all over the US. Keep watching Setlist to see if any other big surprises pop up along the way!

will my chemical romance go on tour again

My Chemical Romance announced today (March 9) that they will be adding new dates to their long-awaited reunion tour.

The announcement came with an eerie video of a statue smashing in slow motion. "New Dates. Smashing." reads the caption .

A whopping 14 new shows were added to their itinerary in 10 new cities, including Raleigh, NC, and Oklahoma City, OK. The band has also added extra shows for several cities including Brooklyn, Toronto, Boston, and Los Angeles.

Tickets for the new shows will go on sale this Friday, March 11, at 12 p.m. local time on the  My Chemical Romance website .

The band's reunion tour was originally scheduled to begin September 2020 but was pushed back for 2 years due to Covid-19 concerns. The following statement was released after the second postponement of the tour in 2021:

“We are deeply sad, but those emotions are only a fraction of the depth of feeling we have all experienced watching the suffering and loss of the past year. We just want to be as sure as we can be that everyone is safe. Refunds will be offered to anyone who wants them. We are sorry if this is disappointing, and we  really  can’t wait to see you in 2022.”

The rockers have a big year ahead of them. Alongside their highly anticipated tour, they will also serve as headliners for many of the biggest festivals of the year , including Riot Fest, Firefly, and When We Were Young.

My Chemical Romance play final show on their world tour

My Chemical Romance’s incredible global reunion tour came to an end last night (March 26) in Osaka – so what comes next?!

My Chemical Romance play final show on their world tour

From some incredible outfits to brilliant throwback performances and even a recent a cappella rendition of Cemetery Drive , My Chemical Romance ’s reunion tour has given us some absolutely amazing moments over the past year.

But now it’s officially come to an end, with the New Jersey emo heroes wrapping up their run at Punkspring Osaka on Sunday, March 26. And as is their lovably cryptic way, they didn’t make a massive fuss over the occasion, leaving many fans wondering what’s coming next.

Guitarist Frank Iero posted before the show “Tonight’s our (final) night Osaka” along with the words “the end.” and a picture of a cockroach – a famously resilient creature, so that could certainly mean something. Interestingly, too, by the end of the Osaka show their drum kit had “Endless night” written on it, whereas at the start of the gig it was just a black mirror.

Frank will be back on tour with L.S. Dunes soon, with the post-hardcore gang playing several shows including a stint on Sad Summer Fest. The good news is that the guitarist told Kerrang! in January that they do have more new stuff in their “back pockets”, while bassist Tim Payne added: “We never really stopped writing music. We recorded and then we got ready for shows, but it’s always just been, ‘Oh hey, I’ve got this idea!’ We’re always working on things and talking about music and art. Once we can really dedicate our time and focus to that and get in the studio, we’ll do it.”

But what else is going to happen in the world of My Chem? Let’s watch this space…

Read this: L.S. Dunes: “We didn’t realise how much we needed this band until we started writing for it”

Call them pop-punk, post-hardcore, or alternative rock, but lead singer and founder Gerard Way would rather you never call them “emo.”

My Chemical Romance is arguably one of the most influential bands of the early 2000s, garnering a gigantic loyal fanbase over the years who do everything from following their tours to supporting their causes in public demonstrations.

When the native New Jersey band disbanded back in 2013, followers believed it was the end of an era, but that proved untrue with a powerhouse reunion in 2019. And now, the long wait for more dates is over as Way, along with his brother Mikey and bandmates Ray Toro and Frank Iero are back with a vengeance.

My Chemical Romance started as the brainchild of lead singer Gerard Way. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attack, the vocalist was inspired to write about the event and start a band with guitarist Toro, his brother Mikey on bass, Iero on rhythm guitar, and original drummer Matt Pelissier.

My Chemical Romance released its first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. While it wasn’t a major hit, it used the music to cultivate a fan base following via MySpace. These efforts plus solid touring performances led the band to sign with Reprise Records in 2003.

In 2004, MCR’s second studio album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, climbed to a respectable position on the Billboard charts, peaking at #28, and went platinum within the year. Pelissier departed soon after the record’s release, so Bob Bryar took over behind the drum kit.

Over the next two years, My Chemical Romance opened for bands like Green Day on the American Idiot Tour and Fall Out Boy on the Warped Tour. With a robust following, the band was ready to amp things up.

In 2007, the band released its magnum opus concept album, The Black Parade. This rock opera centers around a central character dying of cancer. The band staged powerful events like a hosting live gig using a pseudonym that almost resulted in the audience revolting and a releasing faux parade of black-robed marchers.

Not only did The Black Parade solidify My Chemical Romance’s burgeoning cult following, it was a huge commercial success. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and went on to go triple platinum in both the US and UK.

Mistreated and misunderstood by some media outlets, Gerard Way and his band had to overcome controversies generated by misinterpretation of MCR’s lyrics. After releasing their fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, in 2010, the band would release a series of singles over the next two years compiled as the Conventional Weapons album.

Then, almost without warning, My Chemical Romance amicably broke up. But by 2019, a surprise show in LA signaled a reunion tour. COVID-19 postponed it in 2020, but now the boys are back and ready to take the world by storm.

Live reviews

My Chemical Romance, may their music never stop you! After their glorious years of being a band, they never have put on a bad show. With others envious of their success, their rocky vibe still manages to say everything in their lyrics.

As only a start-out band in the early 00's, they have blasted their way through all the others, just by their unique and heartfelt music. They are not just a talented, creative and inspiring foursome, but they all put their all into their spectacular performances on stage, whether it be small cramped venues, or huge overpacked arenas. My Chemical Romance are definitely the band everyone's heard of and alot of upcoming bands look up to. They jam pack their performances with energy, emotion and true passion. As popular songs such as the heart aching 'Helena' to the powerful 'Famous Last Words', there is always an element of surprise that this band will put into their set. Frontman 'Gerard Way' sure can get the crowd on their feet and having the best night of their life. However, as they are no longer a group they will certainly be an inspiration to many. My Chemical Romance is done, but it can never die.

Concerts are usually full of talent and fun. From my experience they have been amazing and a night you'll always remember. But after seeing My Chemical Romance, I finally realised how mind-blowing and inspiring festivals can really be. From the music to the laser show, the big screens to the loud speakers, everything was perfect.

MCR have always been true performers they either perform epically or not at all. And trust me they really knew how to entertain. I have always turned to music as a way out of reality, a tool used to set me free and it felt like they knew how to make me forget about the struggles and just have an amazing time. I was in complete awe, just watching my idols perform and seeing how powerful their words and music could be. They owned the stage. They owned the crowd.

I won't ever forget Gerad Way's hilarious dance moves to 'I Don't Love You' or when 'Frank Iero' guitar string came off mid song. I have some great memories due to that concert and I'm sure no matter how many other performers I see or concerts I attend, nothing will compare to the perfection of MCR.

My Chemical Romance is a classic punk band. My obsession started when I was 11. I loved the Black Parade and everything the band stood for. Their music never fails to amaze me. The lyrics helped me through some tough years and it breaks my heart that they broke up. I'm pretty sure that no matter your walk of life, MCR knew how to touch you.

Wow.. yeah. MCR was my favorite in early high school, seeing them after the craze was a great experience. Gerard still holds up with his great stage proformances and boy oh boy is Frank hot. Got to hear some of my favorite ever songs live and will forever remember this concert.

My Chemical Romance Extend 2022 Reunion Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

UPDATE (3/9/22) : My Chemical Romance have added a 14 new shows to their long-awaited reunion tour , and released additional tickets to previously announced gigs. The group’s expanded itinerary — which is available below, new dates in bold — will find them hitting 10 new cities and adding more shows in Brooklyn, Toronto, Boston, and Los Angeles. Tickets for the new gigs will go on sale this Friday, March 11, at 12 p.m. local time via the My Chemical Romance website .

My Chemical Romance’s reunion tour — originally scheduled to begin September 2020 — has been pushed to 2022 as the impact of Covid-19 continues to linger in the U.S. and other nations around the world.

Why is everybody talking about the hawk tuah girl, late-night hosts react to presidential debate: 'this cannot be real life', hawk tuah girl has already sold at least $65,000 worth of merch.

“We are deeply sad, but those emotions are only a fraction of the depth of feeling we have all experienced watching the suffering and loss of the past year,” My Chemical Romance said in a statement Friday. “We just want to be as sure as we can be that everyone is safe. Refunds will be offered to anyone who wants them.  We are sorry if this is disappointing, and we really can’t wait to see you in 2022.”

In January 2020, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, My Chemical Romance announced their first U.S. tour in nine years with a September 2020 start date. However, five months later amid the pandemic, the band rescheduled those shows to begin September 2021. Those dates, following Friday’s postponement, are now scheduled for 2022.

Check out the MCR’s site for the new itinerary; all tickets will be honored for the new dates, while fans who can’t attend the rescheduled shows can request a refund by May 16th.

My Chemical Romance were also set to headline both the 2020 postponed and 2021 rescheduled Aftershock Festival as well as the 2021 Riot Fest , but the band’s gigs at those festivals have been canceled as part of Friday’s postponement. Both festivals are still scheduled to take place, with Aftershock tweeting Friday that a new headliner was “to be announced” and Riot Fest revealing that MCR’s headlining gig there will now occur in 2022.

The Disappearance of MTV News’ Online Archive Is a Tragedy: Guest Post by the Website’s Founding Editor

By Michael Alex

Michael Alex

MTV News logo

Michael Alex joined MTV News in 1989, where he produced hundreds of segments of “The Week in Rock,” the Peabody-winning “Choose or Lose” series, documentaries and over a thousand daily news television reports. He founded and led MTV News ’ digital organization from 1994 until 2007. Variety welcomes responsible commentary — contact [email protected] if interested.

After I joined MTV News in 1989 as a producer for “The Week in Rock,” it was not uncommon to find interns and staff digging through the videotape library to watch old news reports and interviews with artists they loved. I stayed late many days doing that myself, and I was rarely alone. In the building where Kurt Loder delivered news with his trademark deadpan authority, “You Hear It First” was the mantra — and when fans saw the iconic spinning globe on the TV screen followed by Loder’s latest, they knew he, and we, had something important to share.

MTV News on the web took off like a shot, powered by a loyal base of young people — the early adopters. The way to “hear it first” quickly moved to the web while the television organization pivoted to topically focused news shows, and of course we integrated the two. Over the following years, when major events involving artists happened, mtvnews.com became the go-to source for up-to-the-minute coverage. From the rise of Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and NSYNC to Sean Combs’ trial in 2000 on charges related to a New York nightclub shooting, from the tragic death of Aaliyah in a 2001 plane crash to joining Blink-182 and My Chemical Romance on the Warped tour, from following 50 Cent on his tour of Africa to enlisting artists to support get-out-the-vote campaigns during election years, we were the place to go for both speed and depth.

As a team of music nerds ourselves, we expected the archive to be popular — and within a year we had as many people reading old news articles as we had reading the news of the day: In our early months, we’d done perhaps three small items on the Backstreet Boys when the usage reports suggested that these relatively unknown guys were as popular as the biggest artists on the channel. By the time Google launched and crawled the archive, we were as much in the music-history business as the music-news business.

MTV News always covered a much broader range of artists than the rest of the channel, and for MTV News Digital this was even more the case. Of the many concerns I’ve heard from people in the days since the archive was taken down, the long-running hip-hop column “Mixtape Monday” has been particularly cited. This weekly series of lengthy, in-depth reports — featuring so many unsigned hip-hop artists who went on to become stars or superstars — contains the evolution of the artists and the genre in a way that is not documented anywhere else. Last week, it vanished. For how long? Whether one liked it or not, MTV was a unique cultural force, and MTV News went far beyond the music world: into Hollywood, on presidential campaign trails, to war zones and disaster areas, to the United Nations, and more. Where are all those stories now?

I’m also mindful of the hundreds of journalists who made MTV News what it was and are cut off from a major portion of their career — countless articles they spent countless hours reporting and writing. Of course, they could have saved their articles via PDF or other methods — and probably would have done so if they’d been notified in advance that the archive was vanishing — but the internet was supposed to make that unnecessary. As a former managing editor from the team commented last week, “We’re conditioned to believe the internet is forever — and this proves it’s so not.”

But if history has taught us one thing, it’s that archives are valuable — for decades, recording studios threw away priceless master tapes left behind by everyone from the Rolling Stones to James Brown… until they started appearing on bootlegs and the artists and labels began spending thousands to get them back. In their way, the archives of MTV News and countless other news and entertainment organizations have a similar value: They’re a living record of entertainment history as it happened. And although they probably still exist somewhere deep in the bowels of Paramount, it’s not hard to imagine some site-wide update deleting them forever.

What will happen with the archive? I would think it will be sold; it’s too valuable to simply not exist. But what would those new owners do with it? Presumably charge for access, as the New York Times and other well-established media outlets do. But even with a paywall, at least the history would be available.

History needs stewards, not owners. Whoever legally owns the archive does not legally own the history, even if they own the creative work of thousands of writers, editors, producers and more. This archive — of MTV News, where you heard it first — needs to be available to the public.

(Full disclosure: Variety ‘s executive music editor, Jem Aswad, was employed by MTV News from 2004-2010.)
