vung tau has become a familiar tourist

As one of the most prominent seas in the South Central region, only about 100km from Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau is drawing strong attention to world-class golf courses and numerous luxury resorts. However, the city’s originally natural attractions are no less wealthy, with a collection of family-friendly long sandy beaches like Bai Truoc, Bai Sau, Ho Tram – Ho Coc, and Suoi O, or even the lately-renowned deserted archipelago, Con Dao islands. Also, Vung Tau is a food paradise where visitors could quickly stuff their stomachs with abundant delicious street food to full plates of satisfying fresh seafood.

I. About Vung Tau

Easily accessible from the center of Ho Chi Minh City with just a 3-hour drive, Vung Tau is one of the favorite short-term destinations of southern tourists. Located completely protruding from the mainland like a strip of land, from here, one can see the East Sea both at sunrise and at sunset on the 20km long coastline.

Vung Tau has two mountain ranges, Big Mountain (Tuong Ky) and Small Mountain (Tao Phung), both of which have mixed forests. On Small Mountain is an 18-meter-high lighthouse shining up to 30 nautical miles and over 100 years old, considered the oldest lighthouse in Vietnam. Meanwhile, On Big Mountain is Ho May, a large freshwater lake among the primeval forest.

Surrounded by the sea, primeval forests, high mountains, rivers, and large lakes, the climate here is cool all year round with the average annual temperature is 27 ° C. The dry season from November to April next year is the best time for Vung Tau tourism, while the period from May to October is the rainy season when you need to check the weather forecast carefully to avoid the storms before the trip. On weekends and public holidays, Vung Tau attracts countless tourists, so the service prices are also rising.

Some of the Vung Tau beaches that you can find right in the city center are Bai Sau, Bai Truoc, Dau Beach, Dua Beach; A little further away are Long Hai Beach, Ho Tram – Ho Coc, and Suoi O.

Bai Sau is famous for its nice stretching, gentle waves, and is less crowded. This is also where many hotels and dining areas are located. In contrast, Bai Truoc seems busier as it faces the shopping areas as well as high-rise buildings. Still, this is an ideal place to watch the sunset.

12km from the center of Vung Tau city, Long Hai Beach has crystal clear water nearby stretching golden sand. The tranquility makes this area a perfect spot for sea-front resorts. Plus, it’s also a good place to enjoy fresh seafood at quite low costs. 2. Con Dao Islands

Con Son Islands are an archipelago as well as a district of Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province. In 1861, the French conquest and turned the islands into a notorious prison with “Tiger Cages” to hold and torture Vietnamese political prisoners. The islands with all favorable conditions – magmatic rock cliffs bordering turquoise water with abundant sea creatures, tropical forests, pristine islets, have gradually become a fascinating resort for anyone who wants to escape from the hustle and bustle in big cities.

Among 16 islands in this archipelago, Con Son is the largest one, where the district’s airport is located. Con Son is also renowned for its pristine condition; even more than half of its area is currently still forests. 3. Small Mountain (Nui Nho)

Small Mountain, or Tao Phung Mountain, is located in the south of Vung Tau city with an area of about 120ha and an altitude of about 170m. The mountain consists of 2 peaks combined with coastal roads leading to innumerable hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc.

At the foot of the Lighthouse are four ancient French cannons over 10 meters long and weighing tons. During the war, this area was used to prevent enemy attacks from afar.

The lower peak of Small Mountain is where the 32-meter-high statue of Jesus the King is situated – the tallest statue of Jesus in the world. To get here, you need to pass more than 800 steps, then climb up narrow stairs inside the statue to reach Jesus’s shoulder where you will have various stunning views making up for the hard work of climbing. Coastal City in Bà Ria-Vūng Tàu Province

Surrounded by the South China Sea on three sides, Vūng Tàu sits on a peninsula on Vietnam’s Southeastern Coast. In size, the city measures 54 sq mi, and it consists of 13 wards and one commune. An economic stronghold for Vietnam and the Bà Ria- Vūng Tàu Province , the city is the country’s center for crude oil.

With a healthy trade and flowing tourism, Vūng Tàu is flourishing in the spotlight.

City View of Vung Tau Southern Vietnam

Travelers from Ho Chi Minh City can journey to Vūng Tàu by boat, ferry, hydrofoil, or road. Traveling by private boat will take about 1 and ½ hours, meanwhile, ferries and hydrofoils can make the journey in 2.5-3 hours. The trip by car can be completed in about 3 hours.

There are no railroads or direct flights from HCMC to Vūng Tàu so travelers who need assistance making the trip from Ho Chi Minh should consider hiring a private driver.

For centuries, Vūng Tàu has been a prominent port city for international trading. European ships relied heavily on Vūng Tàu during the 14 th and 15 th centuries to trade and transport goods. In the 18 th and 19 th centuries, Malay pirates used the city as a base before being defeated by the King of Gia Long.

When the French came to the area in the mid-1800s, Vūng Tàu became a point of tension as natives clashed with the foreign invaders. The French called Vūng Tàu, Cap Saint-Jacques and the city’s beauty caught the colonizer’s eye. Soon, mansions and villas were constructed which began the process of turning Vūng Tàu into a resort destination .

Image of a people at the beach in Vung Tau in 1968

The influence of the French has been preserved and to this day, colonial architecture is featured heavily throughout the city. As the saying goes, “beauty never dies” and for Vūng Tàu this has been true. After the French, American military personnel fighting during the war were drawn to the area and they favored Vūng Tàu as a place where troops could get a little bit of rest and relaxation.

Australians and New Zealanders joined the Americans making Vūng Tàu a military stronghold during the war. For the Vietnamese, Vūng Tàu’s coastal location allowed some of them to flee Communism by boat. After the war, Vūng Tàu became the capital of the province and was declared to be a city.

Image of Vung Tau in the 1970s

No longer the province capital, Vūng Tàu is now a prominent place for commercial, industrial, and tourist industries. Many sites and buildings have been preserved in Vūng Tàu and historical tours are a popular way to learn more about the city’s past.

  • Vūng Tàu is a sister city to Newport Beach, California
  • When translated, Vūng Tàu means “anchorage”
  • Vūng Tàu was originally called Tam Thang during Vietnam’s Nguyen Dynasty

Signage can be confusing in the palace and it is best to hire a local guide if you’d like to learn more about the history.

Hit the Beaches

The four main beaches in Vūng Tàu are called Bai Truoc (Front), Bai Sau (Back), Pineapple, and Paradise. Bai Truoc or Front Beach is the most visited sandy spot in Vūng Tàu because of the abundance of restaurants and food stalls that line the promenade.

Bai Sau or Back Beach is less food-focused and more in tune with outdoor activities. Big swells amongst gentle waves make Back Beach the best spot for surfers and kiteboarders. On the street, there are a few hotels and restaurants to cater to the beachgoers. However, Back Beach tends to be much less crowded than Front Beach.

Beach Sunset in Vung Tau Vietnam

For sunset walks without the crowds, visitors should head to Pineapple Beach. More laid back than Front or Back Beach, surfers can still catch a wave at Pineapple. With fewer hotels and restaurants, Pineapple tends to feel more local.

Vūng Tàu Oddities

Perhaps some of the strangest places in the city, the Upside Down House and Selfie House have become the places where tourists go to take memorable photos of their time in Vūng Tàu. Just like the name, the Upside Down House has been made to appear upside down.

The Top 13 Things to Do in Vung Tau, Vietnam

vung tau has become a familiar tourist

Vietnam’s south-central coast used to fly under the tourism radar, and was known only to locals and Russian visitors. But Vung Tau’s terrific seafood, activity-filled beaches, and great views couldn’t be kept hidden from the world for long.

Easy access from Ho Chi Minh City has made Vung Tau an easy weekend escape for Saigon city slickers, but there’s no reason they should have this city and its sights all to themselves. The next time you can spare the two hour-hydrofoil ride from Ho Chi Minh City, visit Vung Tau and see what’s driving the hype.

Surf on Back Beach

The 2-mile-long Bai Sau (Back Beach) is ground zero for water sports in Vung Tau. Thanks to its sandy bottom, steady swells, and forgiving waves, the beach provides a perfect environment for surfing newbies, longboarders, windsurfers, and stand-up paddling enthusiasts.

Swells from three to six feet in size are par for the course on Back Beach, with the best surfing conditions available between July and November (close to Vietnam’s typhoon season ). With warm waters all year round, you can dispense with the wetsuit when surfing here. The hydrofoil from Ho Chi Minh City allows you to transport surfboards from the southern capital; otherwise, you can rent boards at nearby Vung Tau Beach Club .

Feast on Vung Tau’s Seafood

Vung Tau’s seafood scene combines low prices and great taste. You’ll enjoy only the day’s fresh catch when you sit down at one of the city’s classic dining stops. The city’s must-eat treat is banh khot: bite-size savory pancakes garnished with shrimp or squid. It’s available everywhere, but every local swears by Banh Khot Goc Vu Sua.

There’s more to the local food scene than tiny pancakes, though. A few other options for foodies can be found in Vung Tau: Lau Ca Duoi Hoang Minh for Vung Tau’s other specialty, the fragrant stingray hotpot called lau ca duoi; Ganh Hao for a wider selection of cooked-to-order fresh seafood; and Ginger for a five-star Vietnamese feast.

Tee Off at the Bluffs Ho Tram Strip

Golf enthusiasts can practice their game in earnest on a world-beating course that leverages Vung Tau’s hilly seaside topography to the fullest. Widely recognized as one of Asia's top golf courses, the Bluffs Ho Tram Strip was designed by Greg Norman, who used the lay of the land to create a natural-looking links-style course . The scenery is as integral to the game as the terrain: golfers play through a course flanked by the South China Sea and the Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve. Players enjoy the best views at the long par-3 15th green at the Bluffs’ highest point, some 165 feet above sea level.

Cross the Sea to Hon Ba Island

Off the southern tip of Back Beach, Hon Ba Island looks completely inaccessible except by boat. But in the middle of the lunar month, a miracle occurs: the sea recedes enough during low tide for devotees to walk to Hon Ba on foot!

On the island you'll find a small temple, built in 1881 to worship Thuy Long Than Nu, the “water dragon goddess” who influences fishermen’s fortunes. Locals often visit to pray for a good catch.

Go People-Watching at Front Beach Park

Vung Tau’s Bai Truoc (Front Beach) benefits from a three-hectare park; located between the sand and Quang Trung Street, it's where locals go to relax and socialize. A set of 41 sculptures in the park evokes the connection between Vung Tau and the sea, while bicycles can be rented around the park premises. Wait 'til sunset and watch the sun paint the sky red from your Front Beach Park vantage point.

Visit a Colonial-Era “White Palace”

This mansion’s name and purpose has shifted over time. Built at the cusp of the 20th century for French Governor-General Paul Doumer, “Villa Blanche” was intended as a summer vacation house, but later served as a temporary jail for Vietnamese freedom fighter Thanh Thai.

Now called Bach Dinh (“White Palace” in Vietnamese), today it houses a museum of Chinese ceramics and other artifacts rescued from nearby shipwrecks. Linger afterwards for the view; the mansion stands on the side of a hill, some 88 feet above sea level. Walk around Bach Dinh’s lush gardens to enjoy scenic panoramas of the sea and Front Beach below.

Hike Up to the Christ of Vung Tau

French missionary efforts helped Catholicism retain a solid foothold in Vung Tau. To advertise their faith, local Catholics built a massive statue of Jesus Christ, the second-largest in Asia (exceeded only by the Jesus icon on Buntu Burake, Toraja, Indonesia ). The statue towers 105 feet over Nui Nho (Small Mountain). Inside, a 129-step staircase ascends to a viewing deck at neck-level, with balconies on either shoulder for up to six people.

The hike from Ha Long Street to the statue involves climbing an 847-step ascent, which can be completed in 30 minutes. A strictly modest dress code is enforced for entry, and shoes must be removed before climbing the statue.

Admire the View From the Vung Tau Lighthouse

With a base that's 500-plus feet above sea level, the Vung Tau Lighthouse is another Small Mountain climb that’s worth the effort. The lighthouse was built to its present height of 60 feet in 1911, making it one of Vietnam’s oldest lighthouses.

A well-paved road gently ascends to the lighthouse; in cooler months, the walk to the top can be pleasant, with crisp winds complementing the unfolding views of the sea and cityscape. Admire the vistas from the platform, or ascend 55 steps up to the tower’s top for the ultimate view.

Pro tip: Many tourists pair a lighthouse visit with a snack stop at Yaourt Co Tien , renowned for its runny eggs and fresh yogurt.

Cosplay Ancient Battles at the Worldwide Arms Museum

Courtesy of Robert Taylor Museum of Worldwide Arms

After his retirement, British expat Robert Taylor turned his considerable weapons collection into a museum for worldwide arms. Housed in a colonial-era villa in Vung Tau’s Ward 1, the Museum of Ancient Weapons contains about 2,500 authentic artifacts from numerous wars across the globe, across time. Altogether, the collection forms the basis of the largest private weapons museum in Asia. (This museum makes little reference to the Vietnam War; visit the museums in Ho Chi Minh City to fill in the blanks.)

If the detailed signage next to each display doesn’t cut it for you, Mr. Taylor himself is often present to talk about his collection. Guests can even have their pictures taken dressed in military uniforms.

Explore Vung Tau’s Lesser-Known Beaches

Some of Vietnam’s best beaches are located around Vung Tau, but not usually where you’d expect them to be. Back Beach and Front Beach may be extremely accessible from the city center, but these beaches might be too unkempt for tourists’ comfort. Drive north to see some really pristine stretches of sand, like Ho Tram and Ho Coc. While five-star resorts are sprouting up along both beaches, you’ll also find beachside campgrounds for that roughing-it vibe.

There’s a lot to do and see around these parts, too. High-rollers can gamble at the Grand Ho Tram Strip , while budget tourists can rest their tired joints at the Binh Chau Hot Springs near Ho Coc.

Visit “Mr. Whale” at the Thang Tam Temple

Vietnamese fishermen honor the whale (called “Ca Ong,” or “Mr. Whale”) thanks to the belief that whales often rescue men whose boats have capsized. The folk belief lives on at the Thang Tam Temple, where whales are worshiped by devotees.

The Thang Tam temple complex holds an altar to three co-founders of Vung Tau in its central building. But the main focus of Ca Ong worship—a set of century-old whale bones in a place of honor—can be found in a side building.

Ca Ong devotion reaches its peak during the Nghinh Ong Festival and immediately after the Mid-Autumn Festival; the latter is centered around Thang Tam Temple.

Ride a Cable Car to Ho May Park

Courtesy of Ho May Culture & Ecotourism Park

The Ho May Culture & Ecotourism Park was built around the Ho May Lake at an elevation of approximately 700 feet above sea level. The slightly cooler climate and natural vibe make Ho May an excellent setting for a kitschy yet fun-filled day out. If you’re not into bumper cars and roller coasters, check out the largest statue of Buddha in the province, explore remnants of military structures left over by foreign invaders, walk through artificial forests planted around the lake, or watch the spectacular Ho May Grand Show from a 5,000-seat auditorium.

Ho May is accessible by a cable car from sea level—the scenic view alone is worth the price of admission!

Unwind at the Binh Chau Hot Springs

Bùi Thụy Đào Nguyên (CC BY-SA 3.0)

If you have a full day to spare, spend it relaxing in the toasty waters of the Binh Chau Hot Springs, 40-odd miles from Vung Tau and a short drive from Ho Coc Beach. The complex is 35 hectares in size, offering plenty to see and do.

A geothermal spring heats Binh Chau’s large outdoor pool to about 98.6 F (37 C); locals believe its hot, mineral-rich water improves internal health. Later, boil eggs in Binh Chau’s hottest spring, which reaches temperatures of up to 180 F (82 C). Play tennis at the courts, or practice your golf swing at the driving range. You can even feed crocodiles if you so desire.

Plan to stay overnight at one of the local homestays or resorts; there are some surprisingly cushy choices available. Avoid visiting during the weekend rush.

Home to the nearest beaches to Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau has become a popular weekend getaway for locals and expats alike. It’s the perfect place to reset from city life, with a calmer pace of life and lots of outdoors things to do, from hiking and surfing to enjoying viewpoints and sunbathing, there is something to suit all here. This travel guide to Vung Tau will help you plan your own beach escape.

Vung Tau at a glance

Vung Tau is the capital city of Ba Ria Provence, only 95km south-east of Saigon which makes it a great side trip to take after spending a few days in the big city. During the colonial era, the city offered a seaside oasis for wealthy French and Vietnamese diplomats, and as such it still retains some colonial mansions and European influences. Nowadays it is a working beach city with business in fishing and oil and of course tourism thanks to the beaches that flank both sides of the peninsula.

How long to stay – 1-2 days is the perfect length of time to stay, as the sites can be squeezed into one day, leaving another day to relax by the beach.

Best time of year – Dec to May has the most reliable weather, with blue skies and high temps (~35°C). The summer months are the wettest time of year with the potential for storms.

Things to see in Vung Tau

Most people come to Vung Tau to be near the ocean and spend time on the beaches. There are two main beaches, one on each side of the peninsula. Front beach is the best for sunbathing and swimming (you can rent deck chairs or loungers for ~50k a day), and the back beach is perfect for watching the sunset. Here are some other things to see and do during your trip.

Hike the Christ of Vung Tau

Situated atop Small Mountain (Nui Nho), the Christ of Vung Tau is the largest Christ statue in Vietnam sitting 36 meters high. It’s a stair climb (~800 steps) to the top, and you are rewarded with a great view over the city. You can climb up to the top of the statue via a 133-step staircase inside for a small fee.

Views from the Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is one of the oldest buildings in the city, built during the French colonial period in 1862. 156 years later and it’s still operational. Though you can’t go inside, you get stunning 360° views of the city from the small hill it’s situated atop.

Surf at Back Beach

Though not as popular as Mui Ne for surfers, Vung Tau does have some good winter swells. The waves at back beach aren’t huge, making it a great place for beginners to learn and practice surfing. Check out the surf report here , and you can rent boards and book lessons at Beach Club Surf Station.

Hike Nui Dinh Mountain

While the south of Vietnam certainly isn’t known for its mountains, Ba Ria province does boast one peak called Nui Dinh which has many trails and a couple of small waterfalls to explore. Nui Dinh is a popular place for trail runners, with monthly trips for runners from Saigon ( La Holista sometimes run trips, as do Run Club Vietnam ), but it’s also easy to go by yourself.

How to get to Vung Tau

The most efficient way to travel from Saigon to Vung Tau is by ferry however, the bus is marginally cheaper. I’ve always opted to drive myself as it’s only a few hours from the city.

By Motorbike

The fastest way to get to Vung Tau is the express speed boat which takes 1.5hr. The boats are modern and well equipped, with AC toilets and even wifi/entertainment. The ferry is operated by Greenlines through which you can book directly .

⏰ 2 hours 💰 200-250k

Vung Tau is well serviced with buses to and from Saigon. I’ve found the easiest way to book transport in advance is through  Baolau* , a search engine that compares all travel options to find the best one for you. The Futa bus is another popular option and you can book directly through their website.

⏰ 2-3 hours 💰 ~150k

There doesn’t seem to be any way to book direct buses to Vung Tau from Mui Ne or Dalat online, but you can book these routes in person through local travel agents.

Public Bus from Saigon

The public bus is the cheapest way to travel between Saigon and Vung Tau. To get the public bus head to the Mien Dong bus station in Binh Tan district of Ho Chi Minh City. The bus terminates at the Vung Tau bus station on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street.

⏰ every 20 mins between 6am-8pm 💰 80k

A route for driving to Vung Tau

There are two different routes you can take when motorbiking to Vung Tau. Originally, you could only take the highway, but now there is a marginally faster route that takes you on smaller roads through Dong Nai Province. I drove this new route last time I went to Vung Tau and found it faster and less exhausting than the highway route. It includes the Cat Lai ferry which cuts down the time substantially.

When putting the route into google maps you should select the motorbike option, or click “avoid highways and tolls” as motorbikes cannot drive all routes.

⏰ ~3 hours

✍️ For more information on motorbiking in Vietnam, check out my Complete Guide to Motorbiking in Vietnam .

Getting around Vung Tau

Vung Tau is a medium-sized city, so you will likely need to use taxis, like Vinasun, or Grab to explore fully. If you can drive then you could rent a motorbike with assistance from your accommodation *

What to eat in Vung Tau

As a beach and fishing town, most restaurants sell fresh seafood which I highly recommend trying while you’re here. I also recommend trying one of the regional dishes, banh khot.

Eat banh khot

Banh khot are mini fried pancakes, similar to banh xeo, made with pork, shrimp or squid. To eat you wrap the mini pancakes in salad leaves and dip into nuoc mam (fish sauce with chilli and garlic). Apparently, the best place to try authentic banh khot is at Co Ba Vung Tau, though I tried many restaurants and they were all really good.

  • 5 ways to enjoy Vung Tau as a family

All photography by Christian Berg

The laid-back beach town of Vũng Tàu does little to advertise itself. Yet local families from Ho Chi Minh City have been coming here for a quick beach break since the 1980s. A smooth two-hour drive will take you out of the city buzz and into the serenity of a sun-drenched stay by the ocean. Here are five ideas for a family holiday in Vũng Tàu.

Visit an amazing museum.

vung tau family activities

Vietnam’s only private weapons museum, the Robert Taylor Worldwide Arms Museum, has fascinated both adults and kids since 2016. An extensive collection of military uniforms and weapons that date back centuries will keep everyone entertained for hours. For an overview of Vũng Tàu, head to the town’s newly renovated provincial museum nearby.

TIP: Vũng Tàu experiences its best weather during the dry season from November to April. Plan your trip from December to January when the beaches are breezy and most pleasant.

Dine on local delicacies

things to do vung tau families

Vũng Tàu is the birthplace of one, much-loved Vietnamese dish: bánh khọt . Crispy cakes with a plump shrimp in the centre, rolled with lettuce and herbs and dunked in fish sauce are a fantastic seaside snack. For dinner, gather the family around a stingray hot pot with forest bamboo shoots, or slurp up a bowl of bánh canh (tapioca noodles) topped with flower crab.

Stay on the beach in Ho Tram

vung tau family activities

High-end resorts further along the coastline have claimed some of Vũng Tàu’s best sandy beaches, where families can enjoy extra privacy and five-star service. Glide down the waterslides at the Grand Ho Tram Strip, or spend an enjoyable weekend in one of the Melia Ho Tram ’s gorgeous beachfront villas.

TIP: The Melia Ho Tram Kids’ Club offers workshops, playground activities, cooking classes, pool games and cultural endeavours to keep children happily occupied.

Have a real-life history lesson

things to do Vung Tau families

Take the teenagers on a field trip and learn about Vietnam’s colonial history. Untended military outposts, set up to protect the mouth of the Saigon River from invaders, remain outfitted with cannons and other military equipment. On another hillside, Villa Blanche is a mansion originally built for the French governor, and an interesting look into the domestic life of the colonialists.

Take an adventure around town

Vung Tau holiday ideas

For a soft adventure, traverse the nearby Phước Bửu Nature Reserve or dip your feet in the mineral streams at Bình Châu hot spring. Families can ride bicycles to Small Mountain and hike up to see the view from Vung Tau’s famous Jesus Christ statue. End your route on Front Beach at sunset to watch the skies turn scarlet and purple.

vung tau has become a familiar tourist

Vung Tau (Vũng Tàu) is a city in Southern Vietnam , about 125 km from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Its nearness to Saigon and its beauty and fresh air makes it a very popular destination for weekends.

Understand [ edit ]

Vung Tau is the economic centre of Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu , a province in southeastern Vietnam. The city centre, located on the southern tip of the peninsula, has been long known as a tourist haven for businesspeople from Ho Chi Minh City.

Geography and climate [ edit ]

Vung Tau sits on a peninsula separated from the mainland by a river. Much of the city is flat and easy to commute by bicycles/motorcycles or on foot.

The city features long coastlines and a savanna climate pattern with two seasons:

  • Dry season (Nov-Apr): consistently hot and dry, though cooler during the year-end months and the Tết Holiday (Jan-Mar). Ideal for hiking
  • Rainy season (May-Oct): lots of rain, usually in the afternoon. Gets very hot and humid during daytime. Ideal for seaside frolics.

Vung Tau has two main beaches for tourists. The first, Front Beach, is a compact beach with calm waters located in a small bay in the southern tip of the peninsula. The second, Back Beach, has long stretches of sand and relatively violent – but safe for swimming – waters, located on the city's eastern side. The city is scattered with several smaller beaches, though they are dangerous for swimming and drowning is frequent.

Vung Tau features two mountains in the backdrop: Mount Tương Kỳ and Mount Tao Phùng, both popular for hiking. The two mountains are colloquially known as núi Lớn ("Big Mountain") and núi Nhỏ ("Small Mountain"), because of their visible sizes . On the hiking trail to the top of the Big Mountain are numerous Buddhist pagodas and a Vietnamese Zen ( thiền ) Monastery. On top of the Small Mountain is a 32-metre (105 ft) statue of Christ the King, built from 1974 to 1994.

History [ edit ]

During the 14th and 15th centuries, European trading ships regularly visited the waters of this area for shelter because of its calm waters, which inspired the name "Vũng Tàu" (literally "anchorage"). During the Nguyễn Dynasty, Vũng Tàu was officially Tam Thắng (literally "Three Boats"). The Portuguese named the then-small fishing town after the Catholic Saint Jacques.

vung tau has become a familiar tourist

With the onset of French colonisation, Vung Tau was a battleground where the Nguyễn Dynasty fired at French battleships with cannons from mountaintop fortresses; the cannons still exist on the hiking trails today. After the French invaded Vietnam in the 19th century, Vung Tau was known as Cape Saint-Jacques, shortened to Cape. The Vietnamese then colloquially called the city "Ô Cấp", based on the French pronunciation of "au Cape" (literally "to the Cape", used by French people in Saigon referring to their weekend getaways in Vung Tau).

Under French rule, Vung Tau became a popular seaside getaway for officials and the elites. The last Emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty, Bảo Đại, often retreated to the hillside French colonial mansion Bạch Dinh ( Villa Blanche , literally "White Palace", now a popular tourist destination) while on holiday. The French built many public buildings, a Catholic church, and tree-lined avenues; all are well preserved and still intact to this day.

During the American War (called the Vietnam War outside the country), Vung Tau was home to the Australian Army and American support units. Its popularity as a seaside resort continued. After the war, Vung Tau was a common launching place for boat people fleeing the communists. In the 1980s, the joint Vietnamese-Soviet enterprise for oil and gas exploration Vietsovpetro established, leading to an influx of Soviet (mainly Russian) migrants. In 1991, Vung Tau officially became a city.

Waves of immigration have turned the northern part into an industrial zone with many ports and oil industry services, and the southern tip remains an attractive weekend getaway. Because of Russian immigration, an ethnic Russian cluster was established, with Soviet-era architecture apartments and many Russian shops and eateries.

Economy and society [ edit ]

vung tau has become a familiar tourist

Historically a port city, Vung Tau is a major centre of Vietnam's modern offshore oil industry. State-controlled oil and gas enterprises attract many high-skilled engineers and technicians. After privatisation in 1986, Vung Tau has welcomed many private corporations in ship building, oil services, and logistics. As a result, Vung Tau's middle-class population is generally well-educated and well-mannered, though the lower-class population consisting of immigrants from rural areas does exist. Contrary to North American cities, the suburban area is home to the lower-middle class immigrants and working population. The middle- and upper-middle class population mostly settle in the city centre located at the southern edge of the peninsula, close to the beaches and tourist spots.

As of 2021, Vung Tau is home to 420,000 people. As a result of Russian immigration, there is a sizeable Russian minority living in a designated area colloquially called Khu Năm Tầng ("Five-Storied Area"), because of the area's array of five-storied apartment buildings in Soviet architecture. There is also a significant Australian community, mainly elderly, drawn to the area after serving in the Battle of Long Tan 35 km to the north of Vung Tau. In vibrant downtown, foreign cultural influences are visible through Japanese, Korean, and Russian shops and eateries. An expat community has contributed to the city's hippie-ish neighbourhoods with Italian, Mexican, American, and Indian influences.

Although the population is generally irreligious, Vung Tau is religiously tolerant and there are many religious buildings catering mostly to Buddhist and Catholics along with other religious minorities such as Protestants and Cao Đài. Two of the city's iconic spots are the Statue of Christ the King and Thích Ca Phật Đài, highlighting the religious diversity of the population.

By road [ edit ].

Vũng Tàu is connected to the mainland by Hwy 51 (Quốc lộ 51), which runs from Biên Hòa City. The shortest route from Ho Chi Minh city is through HCMC–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Highway, exit at Long Thành and join Highway 51.

  • 10.35065 107.08671 1 Vũng Tàu Bus Station . Bus times HCMC see picture. ( updated Dec 2023 )

At least hourly buses run between Vung Tau and HCMC throughout the day 04:00–19:30; 110–200,000 dong, ca. 2 hr.

Otherwise, Vung Tau is well connected to Southern Vietnam and the Mekong Delta by bus, with 60-80 bus connections daily in addition to HCMC. There exist 4 daily connection with Phan Thiet (for Mui Ne ) in each direction.

The full list of bus schedules and prices can be found next to the bus station administration desk.

By car [ edit ]

From HCMC, the best route is similar to coach/bus mentioned above. Use HCMC–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Highway, turn right at Long Thành exit and go straight on Highway 51 to reach Vũng Tàu. It takes roughly 2 hours from District 1, HCMC, to Vũng Tàu, depends on drivers and/or traffic. On public holidays or weekends, the roads usually become busier.

Drivers need to remember to follow speed limit as traffic police may present anytime, check speed and give fine. 120 km/h is limit on HCMC–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Highway. On Highway 51, drivers can reach 90 km/h on most of the way outside crowded area. In some crowded towns, it is limited to 60 km/h and prompted by big blue information signs on roadside. There are several other certain limits described by other signs infrequently.

There are 3 toll booths on the way from HCMC to Vũng Tàu. One is on HCMC–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Highway and another two are on Highway 51. At the first booth, fare for up-to-9-seat car is 40,000 dong. At the second and third booths, you pay 20,000 dong for the one you reach first and give receipt to the rest, no more charge.

By motorbike or bicycle [ edit ]

As motorbikes and bicycles are forbidden from HCMC–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Highway, the best way for drivers/riders is using Cát Lái ferry.

After crossing the river, follow the main road to get through Nhơn Trạch district, then join Highway 51, turn right and go straight.

The road quality is acceptable for driving/riding. Just make sure you are on proper lane and watch out for pedestrians especially at busy intersections, where people cross the road irregularly at times. Except HCMC–Long Thành–Dầu Giây Highway, there are many coffee shops, restaurants, gas stations for drivers/riders to take a break. Make sure you know the price before settle down.

By plane [ edit ]

By boat [ edit ].

"Tàu cánh ngầm" aka "Hydrofoil fast ferry" in Vietnam is a quick way to get to and from Vũng Tàu. Taking the hydrofoil is a good way to see the commercial maritime areas as the boat runs through the Saigon River to the sea. After 1¼ hr Vũng Tàu peninsula appears with its two mountains (conveniently called "Big Mountain" and "Little Mountain") at the waterfront. This is a little more comfortable way to get to Vung Tau rather than taking the bus. Booking at least one day in advance in recommended, especially at the weekend.

The ferry departs at Bach Dang Pier in Saigon, District 1. Not far from the Majestic Hotel (100 m). Lands in Cầu Đá Port, Ben Cau Da, Ha Long St, Vung Tau.

At least the following company serves Vung Tau (but verify!):

  • Greenlines , Hàm Nghi Road, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City . 2 hr 620,000 dong return . ( updated Dec 2023 )

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By taxi [ edit ]

As an ordinary Vietnam urban area, Vũng Tàu has plenty of taxis and xe ôm (taxi motorbike) drivers who are professional. The taxis fare is similar to Hồ Chí Minh city. Remember to always agree on a price before setting off. Also your accommodation can help you organise a ride.

But for foreigners, the best option is to use Grab due to the language barrier and to avoid "misunderstandings" about price, etc.

By motorbike [ edit ]

Motorbike rental service can be found in most of hotels or hostels, especially at back beach. Expect arund 120,000 dong for manual and 200,000 dong for automatic. Make sure you have valid driving license and helmets.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Vũng Tàu should be one of the best places in Việt Nam where you can enjoy riding a bike, thanks to low traffic density and picturesque coastal roads. Bicycle rental service is not too abundant but can be found in some hostel at Back Beach.

The best cycling route is along the coast, through Thùy Vân st, Hạ Long st, Quang Trung st and Trần Phú st. With this way, slow pace to breath sea breeze or speedy race are up to you, as road quality is quite nice. If you prefer off-road, some paths up to Small/Big Mountains are good way of practising.

Wearing helmet is not mandatory yet recommended. And do not forget to watch out at any intersection as other drivers tend to not give way to biker.

On foot [ edit ]

Vũng Tàu is rather small, so you can walk most places. Recommended ways are: Ba Cu street (the city's centre), Đồ Chiểu street (food centre), Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị Square, Công viên Bãi trước (Front Beach park) and pavements along the coastline. Pedestrians should watch out before crossing roads as drivers usually do not give way, like in most of Vietnamese cities.

See [ edit ]

  • 10.35079 107.06858 1 Bạch Dinh ( Villa Blanche ) ( Trần Phú St on the slopes of Big Mountain, along Tran Phu St, 50 m above sea level ). Built by the French (1898-1916) as a summer holiday house for French Governor-General Paul Doumer. Also formerly known as Dinh Toàn Quyền ( Villa du Gouverneur ). Under French rule, the mansion was a holiday getaway for French governors and Bảo Đại, the last Emperor of Vietnam. During the American War, the mansion was used for R&R. Since the end of the American War, the mansion has been for public use. A mix of French colonial and Vietnamese architecture, Bạch Dinh boasts lavish decorations and a collection of antiques, including fine porcelain and African elephants' tusks. ( updated Dec 2023 )

  • 10.351134 107.0748 6 Robert Taylor Museum of Worldwide Arms , 98 Tran Hung Dao Street, Ward 1 ( right in the centre of town, catch a cab or walk from Front Beach ). Daily 08:00–18:00 . A fascinating collection of arms and uniforms from around the world. Most major wars and battles are covered. The emphasis is in British and Australian regimental uniforms but there are also Samurai, Mongols, Saracens, Turks and Bulgarians as well as most European and North American armies. There is a wide range of guns, swords and other weapons of war. Quite why Bob Taylor chose to open his museum in the relative obscurity of Vung Tau is not clear from the collection but if you have even a passing interest in military history it is well worth a couple of hours of your time if you find yourself in the city. 100,000 dong for foreigners . Fun day out if you have kids (quite fun even if you don't!). Dodgems, Go-Karts, various fairground rides, a large water park, a games centre, the 'Alpine Luge' and other attractions are all included in the cost! 400,000 dong incl. cable car (return) . Beaches [ edit ]

The seaside makes Vung Tau a nearby paradise for Saigon visitors. Well-travelled foreigners may be underwhelmed. The beach is not too attractive with litter lining the coast, although as of July 2018 the local authority have had a clean up and the beaches are much cleaner and most of the sandy eastern beach has signage about dangerous swimming. There are four beaches near the city center:

  • 10.36874 107.0616 3 Bãi Dâu ( Mulberry Beach ). Small beach on the west side of Big Mount.
  • 10.32764 107.08015 4 Bãi Dứa ( Pineapple Beach ). Small beach along Hạ Long St, by Small Mount.
  • 10.3427 107.0959 5 Bãi Sau ( Back Beach ). Also known as Thùy Vân Beach. The only standard beach for tourism in Vung Tau. It is 3 km long and stretches from the Small Mount to Paradise Park. All beaches here are free. You must pass through some "water parks" to get to the beach in some places, in most places there is a pleasant promenade that leads directly to the beach. The beach is clean, the water is shallow quite a way out, there are very few jet-skis and hardly any beach hawkers. Sea parachuting and canoeing available all day. Locker 15,000 dong, beach umbrella 30,000 dong, chaise longue 25,000 dong, deck chair and umbrella 50,000 dong, fresh water showers 8,000 dong . ( updated Jul 2018 )

Eat [ edit ]

What [ edit ]

  • Bánh Khọt – Vung Tau's signature meal. It is a breakfast meal with rice cakes filled with seafood (squid, shrimp) or egg and lots of greens into which you roll the rice cakes and then dip them into a sweet and salty sauce. Bánh Khọt starts at 45,000 dong, but often goes for 60,000 dong — a little steep when you compare it to the 5 pieces of Bánh Căn for 25–40,000 in Nha Trang, which is pretty much the same.
  • Hủ Tiếu Mực – Squid noodles, around 50,000 dong.
  • Bánh Cánh Ghe – Grab noodles, around 50,000 dong.
  • Lẩu – Meaning hot pot , is very popular in Vung Tau, but often only makes sense in a larger group due to the price and amount. Hot pot is a must at every Vietnamese party.

You will also be able to find Bò Kho , Bánh Xèo , or just Phở .

Meals in Vung Tau are generally more expensive than in the rest of the country — you won't find many meals below 40,000 dong (as of 2023). This is also due to the city being a petroleum center and due to focus on seafood dishes.

Where [ edit ]

Inexpensive, local and authentic eateries can be found along 10.34033 107.08147 1 Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm going north for not more than a kilometer, along 10.34377 107.08262 2 Trần Đồng going west, and along 10.34527 107.07984 3 Lê Lai going north.

Sand flies on beach can be a problem and cause allergic reaction on your legs. If you experience this, just use anti-mosquito spray all over your legs before you enter the beach, it will minimise amount of bites you will have. Note that you might not immediately notice the sand flies at the beach, but you will definitely wonder where you got all those "mosquito" bites from the next day — so be prepared.

Vung Tau Travel Guide

Vung Tau Travel Guide

Vung Tau is a beach city about 1.45 hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City (depending on how crazy your driver is). I was warned in advance to not expect much of the beach, so my expectations were suitably met. The city itself is much nicer than I thought it would be, and it’s a place I would come back to if I felt the need to get out of the big city for a couple of days.

Dien Bien Cinema

The city is more suitable as a weekend getaway for Saigonese. If you’re doing the coastal backpacker trail there is no need to detour here. There is a small retired foreigner community here (think Pattaya without as many girlie bars), as well as a base for expats working in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Offshore Bar

On the back beach, there are beach chairs and umbrellas with and vendors selling food and beach toys, alongside working fishing boats.

Back beach

Off the beach is the island of Hon Ba, which during low tide you can walk to. The back beach also has a long promenade which is ideal for long walks.

Morning on the back beach

The front beach is near the city centre and is much smaller.

Front Beach

There are some beautiful little parks by the beach which make the city a pleasant place to stay.

Where to stay in Vung Tau

Most of the hotels are on the back beach, which is the reason most people come to Vung Tau. I’ve stayed at the Hoang Chau Motel and the Laska Hotel , which are typical cheap guesthouses near the Vung Tau backbeach.

How to get to Vung Tau

Ferry at Vung Tau

Most travellers arrive in Vung Tau via Saigon by minivan or ferry. The ferry is a great way to go as you will get a view of the Saigon river and majestic waterways surrounding Saigon. Here is how to get from Saigon to Vung Tau by ferry .

There are also minivans that leave throughout the day. From the Pham Ngu Lau backpacker area there are direct buses.

Book tickets to Vung Tau

I used Hoa Mai at 44 Nguyen Thai Binh in District 1, not far from Ben Thanh Market. I just turned up and got a seat, though you should make a booking if you know your dates. They also have a Limousine van which has bigger seats.

Banh Khot

When in Vung Tau you will soon notice Banh Khot Vung Tau – the famous rice pancake. There are a few well-known ones, and I liked Quan Banh khot Goc Vu Sua at 14 Nguyen Truong To. It’s always busy and you can watch how it is made in front of the restaurant.

Being by the sea means Vung Tau is a popular seafood destination. There are many seafood markets on the back beach, though I find going out for seafood is best enjoyed in groups where you can share different dishes.

Vung Tau Tourism

Vung Tau translates into 'The bay of boats'. Sitting on a hilly strip of land that juts into the Ocean, Vung tau is one of the best beach towns located around 100 Km from Ho Chi Minh City. It primarily serves as a weekend getaway from Saigon and other cities in the nearby region. The two main beaches are Back Beach and Front beach. The wide boulevards and colonial buildings in this town are major highlights.

Back Beach is a three-kilometre stretch of sand and sea catering to all the tourists – sun loungers, umbrellas, jet skis, tube rentals, seafood, beach toys and beer, you name it you get it! The Front beach is more low-key and is a harbour to many riverboats. The French style promenade connects the two beaches and makes for a relaxing sunset stroll. The city gets painfully crowded during the weekends owing to its reputation as a great place for singles to mingle. Prices often triple and if you want to avoid crowds and/or are on a budget visiting during the week is a good idea. You can choose to visit the Jesus Christ statue or the Lighthouse and catch some spectacular views of the city or choose to visit one of the numerous pagodas scattered across the city. A must visit is the Worldwide Arms Museum that showcases ancient weaponry. Vung tau is thin on substantial things to do, but it has this festive, cheerful yet calming vibe to it and that is precisely why you should visit Vung Tau.

How to get to Vung Tau

Geenlines Ferry - Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau

Vung Tau is just 60 miles (~95 km) from Ho Chi Minh City and the drive typically takes ~2-2.5 hours. While there is a small airport in Vung Tau, helicopters primarily use it bound for the oil rigs stationed just offshore.

The three most common ways of reaching Vung Tao from Ho Chi Minh City are by minibusses, private cars, and high-speed ferries.

Minibus Numerous luxury minibus companies leave for Vung Tau every day of the week. Most of them depart from Nguyễn Thái Bình Street in District 1. Anh Quoc and Hoa Mai are two reliable companies with well-maintained and comfortable vans. A one-way ticket should cost you ~$8-10 USD (180,000-230,000 VND). You can compare all of your different minibus options on Bookaway.com .

Check Minibus Prices & Schedules on Bookaway

Private Car If you’re traveling as a group or don’t mind spending a bit extra for comfort and privacy, you can just hire your own car and driver to take you to Vung Tau. It should cost you ~$40-60 USD for a one-way trip. It depends on the size of the vehicle and your negotiation skills. You can also find private transfer services on Bookaway , but we recommend Vikado Transportation Services. We have used their services quite a bit for trips around Southern Vietnam. It’s run by Tuyen (aka “Dennis”). You can reach him at +84 98 558 34 89 (Line, Viber, WhatsApp, etc.).

High-Speed Ferry The GreenlinesDP ferry service between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau is surprisingly reliable, comfortable, and affordable. The trip takes ~2 hours and there are four daily departures on weekdays and six on weekends. A one-way ticket costs 240,000 VND (~$10.50 USD) on weekdays and 280,000 VND (~$12 USD) on weekends.

The ferry leaves from the Bach Dang Pier in District 1 – right across the street from the Majestic Hotel. And in Vung Tau, it docks right behind the Dopple Mayer Cable Car.

The ferry often sells out on weekends and holidays. It’s best to book your tickets in advance on the GreenlinesDP website . It’s also worth noting that the ferry tends to run a bit behind schedule. Make sure to build some extra time into your travel schedule.

The 15 Best Things to do in Vung Tau

1. climb to the top of the christ the king statue.

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Christ the King Statue

The Christ the King Statue stands on top of Mount Nhỏ overlooking the ocean in Vung Tau. It is reminiscent of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. Both have inviting outstretched arms that look like they are ready to give you a big bear hug.

The two statues are even similar in size – Vung Tau’s Christ the King is 118 feet tall in total (including the base platform) and his arms span 60 feet. Christ the Redeemer is a similar height but with a slightly longer arm span at 92 feet.

Vun Tau, Vietnam - Panorama View from Christ the King Statue

You’ll be rewarded with the best views of Vung Tau from the tiny, cramped viewing platforms on Christ the King’s shoulders. But to get there, you’ll need to climb over 800 stairs to the base of the statue and then another 133 steps once inside. The spiral staircase inside of the statue is small and often crowded. You’ll likely need to wait your turn to get out to the viewing platform.

What to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Spiral Staircase Inside of Christ the King Statue

It’s best to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds. Be sure to bring plenty of water. There are a couple of small shops on the walk-up and at the base of the statue if you need some refreshments.

You’ll also notice signs indicating that visitors wearing shorts or tank tops will not be allowed inside the statue. This policy doesn’t seem to be enforced, but it’s still best to dress conservatively and respect the fact that it’s a religious site.

The staircase up to the Christ the King statue is open from 6:30 am – 5 pm daily with the last entrance at 4:20 pm. The interior of the statue is open from 7:15 am – 11:30 am and from 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm. The last entrance is 15 minutes before closing time. On Thursday, it is closed in the afternoon for cleaning.

2. Hike to the Vung Tau Lighthouse

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: View from Christ the King Statue

A long and windy road leads up the Nui Nho (“small mountain”) to the whitewashed Vung Tau Lighthouse. Built by the French in 1862, this particular lighthouse is well known as it is the oldest of almost 80 lighthouses in Vietnam.

Once you reach the lighthouse, you’ll be rewarded with 360° views of Vung Tau and it’s a great place to catch the sunset. Note that there isn’t really anything else here aside from a few overpriced coffee shops but if you’re visiting in the heat of the day you’ll appreciate taking a rest with an ice-cold beverage.

3. Ride the Doppel Mayer Cable Car

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Cable Car to Ho May Park

This fun activity in Vung Tau isn’t just a ride in a cable car, but it also includes a trip to an amusement park that kids will love! The Ho May Culture and Ecotourism Park sits at the top of a hill and you can reach it by a scenic ride in the cable car.

The entrance fee for the Dobbel Mayer Cable Car covers unlimited rides in Ho May park so kids (and adults) can go wild! The rides offered include bumper cars, rollercoasters, go-karts, and more. Adults will love the views over Vung Tau on the cable car ride to the top, and kids will love spending the afternoon playing games in the amusement park. It’s fun for the entire family!

Entrance Fees

400,000 VND per adult to ride the cable car and have unlimited use of the games in the Ho May amusement park.

4. Indulge in High Tea at the Imperial Garden Bar

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: High Tea at the Imperial Hotel

The Imperial Hotel is a beautiful, old-fashioned hotel located right on the beach in the heart of the city. It’s one of the best places to stay in Vung Tau but even if you don’t spend the night there, it’s worth a visit to their stunning beautiful outdoor garden bar.

The front lawn of the Imperial Hotel has been transformed into a swanky little bar and teashop with classy but comfortable cushions for seating and large tent seats that are perfectly Instagrammable. It’s impossible to resist walking around snapping photos here.

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Imperial Garden Bar

And while they have a variety of alcoholic beverages on the menu, we would suggest opting for their High Tea. It’s a surprisingly good deal at under $20 USD for two people and includes tea or coffee and a selection of sweet and savory treats. And the treats arrive on a darling little dessert tray which will complete your garden bar selfie.

There are no fans in the Garden Bar so we would recommend waiting until 3:30 pm or 4 pm to enjoy your high tea to avoid the midday heat. And if it’s too warm, you can always head inside to the lounge that oozes with old Hollywood glamour.

5. Tour the White Palace

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: White Palace

Built in 1898, the White Palace (Bach Dinh) is a mansion that has a French architectural style. It sits far above the city of Vung Tau on Big Mountain. It was originally built as the summer retreat for General Paul Doumer, a French Governor.

The house itself is quite impressive and the expansive views out of the second-story windows are beautiful. But the exhibits are poorly signed and the mansion has no historical information to help you understand what you are looking at.

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: White Palace

The most impressive room in the palace is right inside the front entrance which has clearly been well maintained. The rest of the palace and the furniture could use a good scrub and some TLC. There is no air-conditioning or fans inside the palace so you won’t want to stay here for long.

Entrance Fees & Hours

150,000 VND per person Open 7 am – 5 pm daily

6. Wade out to Hon Ba Temple

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Hon Ba Temple

Hon Ba is a small island off the southeastern tip of the peninsula with a small temple perched on in the middle. During low tide, you can actually walk along a slippery rocky path all the way to the island. Just be careful that you don’t stay too long or you’ll have to swim back to the mainland!

Ask your hotel concierge to check the tide charts before heading out on this adventure in Vung Tau.

7. Walk Around the Boardwalk

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: Fishermen

Vung Tau is on a peninsula so the small city is bordered by the sea on three sides. Running all along the coast you’ll find a fairly well-maintained sidewalk (a rarity in Vietnam) with plenty of coffee shops, bars, restaurants, food trucks, and even a couple of shaded parks.

It’s a great place for a stroll early in the morning before it gets too hot out or in the late afternoon as the sun is setting. In the morning you’ll see locals exercising, visitors heading to the beach, and fishermen bringing in their daily catch.

8. Lounge on the Beach

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: Front Beach

The 4 most popular beaches in Vung Tau are Front Beach, Back Beach, Pineapple Beach, and Paradise Beach.

Front Beach (Bai Truoc) and Back Beach (Bai Sau) are the most popular beaches in the city. The water isn’t the cleanest at Front Beach so you may not want to swim here but it is filled with restaurants so you’ll have plenty of delicious seafood dining options. Back Beach can get pretty windy so it’s popular with windsurfers and surfers. It has a long, wide beach so even though it gets quite crowded, you can find a good spot to lounge.

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Back Beach

Pineapple Beach (Bai Dua) is the smallest of the four beaches but arguably the cleanest. Here you’ll find calm waters, perfect for swimming. And you’ll have to pay a fee to enter Paradise Beach because it’s part of a resort park so it’s much less crowded and has some high-end dining options. You’ll probably appreciate having access to bathrooms and changing rooms but you’ll pay considerably more here for food and drinks.

9. Listen to Live Music at Cafe Art Mio

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: Cafe Art Mio

Cafe Art Mio is a lovely coffee shop with funky music-themed decor that also has live music on the weekends. The seating is comfortable and it has air conditioning which you’ll appreciate after a day of exploring Vung Tau in the hot sun. They offer a wide selection of refreshing drinks at reasonable prices and the service is friendly.

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Cafe Art Mio

You’ll want to spend all afternoon at Cafe Art Mio! It’s a great place to get some work done (the upstairs area is quieter) or catch up with friends over a cup of coffee. It’s definitely one of the best coffee shops in Vung Tau!

10. Enjoy a Cocktail at Sunset at the Marina Club

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: Marina Club

If you want a beautiful place to enjoy views of the ocean at sunset, be sure to head over to the Marina Club Vung Tau about an hour before to nab one of the coveted front-row tables. You can lounge on the expansive sun deck while sipping surprisingly reasonably priced cocktails and enjoying the view of Pineapple Beach and the South China Sea.

11. Stroll Around the Thich Ca Phat Dai Temple

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: Thich Ca Phat Dai Temple

The Thich Ca Phat Dai is a Theravada Buddhist temple located on the Western side of Vung Tau. You’ll follow rambling pathways and staircases up the hillside passing several different buildings and statues representing important stages of the Buddha’s life.

The thick forest surrounding the temple makes you feel like you’re miles away from the city of Vung Tau, and if you come here in the early morning you’ll likely have the place all to yourself except for a few resident monks.

12. Pick your Favorite Pizza Joint

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: David Pizzeria

Spoiler alert : The best pizza joint in Vung Tau is David Pizzeria , hands down.

Even though we just spoiled it for you, you can still have fun sampling the various options and deciding for yourself. And if you are wondering why pizza is such a popular cuisine in Vung Tau, we have no idea. If you search Tripadvisor for the best restaurants in Vung Tau, you’ll find Pizza Leo , David Pizzeria , and Luca Pizza all at the top of the list.

We’d recommend that you sample all of them to find your favorite but if you don’t have the time (or if you’d rather avoid an all-pizza diet), just make sure you don’t miss out on David Pizzeria , it really is the best!

13. Visit the Chon Khong Monastery

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Chon Khong Monastery

The Chon Khong Monastery is a peaceful place to visit during your stay in Vung Tau. It is also located on the slopes of Big Mountain so you’ll be able to enjoy views of the city here. The area is nicely landscaped and has some shade if you need to escape the heat.

There is a large Buddha statue being constructed right next to the monastery which will make this destination even more of a must-see during your trip to Vung Tau!

14. Snap Photos at the Upside Down House

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Upside Down House

The Upside Down House is a fun thing to do in Vung Tau whether you’re 8 or 80 – it’s great for any age! The “house” is several stories of rooms that have been painted to appear upside down. And furniture has been affixed to the walls and the ceiling so when you stand on the floor and take a photo, it appears as though you’re hanging from the ceiling!

Vung Tau, Vietnam - Things to do: Upside Down House

There are friendly staff members around to take photos for your group, and there are photos hung on the wall to show you fun poses to consider. Whether you have kids or are just a kid at heart, you’ll love snapping fun photos at the Upside Down House!

There is also an attached coffee shop if you’d like to have a drink while browsing through your silly photos.

40,000 VND for adults 30,000 VND for children 1.1 meters and above Free for seniors and children under 1.1 meters

15. Take Selfies at Nha Seo Fi

Best Things to do in Vung Tau, Vietnam: Nha SEO Fi (Selfie House)

The Nha Seo Fi (Selfie House) is similar to the Upside Down House in that there are several floors, each with different scenes for photos. A helpful staff member will guide you around and show you how to pose so they can snap a photo of your group. Unfortunately, there are no photos on the wall to show you what the photo is supposed to look like which makes it a bit more challenging.

If you only go to one of these houses, the Upside Down House was by far our favorite. The photo scenes are more unique and the photos come out sillier. But both are extremely entertaining.

Nha Seo Fi also has an attached coffee shop if you need a pick-me-up after your photoshoot.

That’s it! The best things to see and do in Vung Tau. We hope you have an amazing trip!

If you can organize enough people for a hired car or even a mini-bus , head instead for Thuy Dong, a private beach a few kilometers north of Vung Tau. The water is clean, and the owners provide chairs, tables and umbrellas. Pack a picnic for the two hour drive from HCMC, but save room for cold beer and piles of steamed crabs you can order beachside.
