How will i be charged for travelpass.

You're only charged on days you use your device in a TravelPass country :

• $5/day in Mexico and Canada. Remember, texting and data use in Mexico and Canada are included at no extra cost in our Unlimited mobile plans.
• $10/day in other TravelPass countries.
• If you travel to 2 countries within a single 24-hour session or have a layover in a different country on your way to your final destination, you're still only charged for the first session.
• There's no charge when you're in the US.

Which countries can I call with TravelPass?

With TravelPass, you can call within the country you're visiting and you can call back to the US. If you want to call a different country, add an International Long Distance Plan to your line in My Verizon website or the My Verizon app. If you don't add an international long distance plan you'll be charged international long distance pay per minute rates for these calls.

How does TravelPass work?

After you add TravelPass to your line:

• A 24-hour TravelPass session starts automatically when you use your device in a TravelPass country (e.g., make or answer a phone call, send a text or use data).
• You must turn on cellular data or data roaming when you go to the TravelPass country to use Travel Pass.
• App content refreshing (e.g., Weather apps, Fitness Tracker, etc.)
• Syncing (e.g., with email)
• Device or app software updates
• 2 hours after the session starts we send you a text letting you know when your 24-hour TravelPass session ends. Using your device after that time will start a new session.

Can I use Wi-Fi calling with TravelPass?

Wi-Fi calling isn't included with TravelPass. Wi-Fi calling to a country other than the US is charged international long distance rates regardless of whether or not you have an international travel plan.

Being at the forefront of the move to 5G connectivity, Verizon is often referred to as one of the best carriers in the U.S. But how does the carrier compare to competitors like AT&T , T-Mobile , and newcomer Google Fi when traveling abroad?

That’s a good question, and it’s an important one to ask if you find yourself out of the country often. So in this article, we’re going to dive deep and take a look at how Verizon’s U.S. phone plans work abroad. We’ll start out by looking at the company’s international plans and their respective pricing. Then, we’ll look at the supported countries and compare the pros and cons of using Verizon abroad.

Spoiler alert: like AT&T, the international options are pretty limited on Verizon. You’ll want to study this article if you’re a current Verizon customer who’s about to travel abroad, or if you’re a traveler that’s considering a switch to Verizon.

Breaking Down Verizon’s International Data Plans

As teased in the intro, Verizon has a limited (and expensive) set of international plans. There are 3 different plans available, ranging from a monthly international data allowance to a plan that lets you use your U.S. data plan while traveling abroad.

Here’s a look at all of the available options:

All Verizon customers are automatically enrolled in pay as you go international data, texting, and calling. If you don’t enroll in another plan on this list and take your phone out of airplane mode when abroad, you’ll automatically be charged at the following rates:

• Talk: $0.99-$2.99 per minute, depending on the country
• Text: $0.50 to send, $0.05 to receive
• MMS: $0.25 to send or receive
• Data: $2.05 per megabyte

There’s no doubt that these prices are absolutely astronomical, hence why we don’t recommend relying on pay as you go international data — it can get very expensive very quickly.

For example, sending a 3 MB picture message on Facebook Messenger would cost a whopping $6.15! And since modern smartphones use data in the background to fetch email, notifications, and more, you may end up being charged just for taking your phone out of airplane mode.

Hot Tip: Thankfully, you can call Verizon to have pay as you go international data disabled on your account. We highly recommend doing this so that you can protect yourself from an astronomical bill on your next trip.

Verizon’s TravelPass plan is nearly identical to AT&T’s International Day Pass plan. This plan lets you use your U.S. data, talk, and text plan abroad for a daily fee.

This plan costs $10 per day per line, and — once enrolled — you’ll only be charged for the days you actually use your phone abroad. This means you can set the plan and forget it. Then, instead of worrying about pay as you go data, you’ll be charged a flat-rate fee for your international phone usage.

Note that you’re billed in 24-hour increments, so if you fly to Brazil and connect to data at 5 p.m. on a Monday, your single $10 fee will be valid until 5 p.m. on Tuesday. You’ll be billed for another 24-hour increment if you continue using your phone after this initial period.

Further, this plan still pulls from your U.S. data, text, and calling allowance, so make sure to keep an eye on how much you use your phone. Otherwise, you might come back home with overage fees.

You can use this plan in any of Verizon’s 185+ supported countries and if needed, you can roam in multiple countries on the same day without paying extra. Don’t worry — we’ll discuss supported countries later in the article.

Finally, you can enroll in a Verizon Monthly Travel Plan. This gives you a set amount of data, calls, and texts to use when you travel abroad. However, the amount of data, calls, and texts included with each plan is limited at best.

Here’s a look at what’s included with Verizon’s 2 Monthly Travel Plans:

If you exceed your data, talk, or text allowance, you’ll be charged at the following rates:

• $0.35 per minute of talk
• $0.05 per text message sent
• $25 per 0.5 GB of data used

Like the TravelPass, this plan works in 185+ countries and can be used across multiple countries if needed. Note that — also like TravelPass — this plan is billed per line, so multiple lines can’t share the same Monthly Travel Plan.

A handful of Verizon plans come with free data, call, and text roaming within North America. This means that when traveling within Canada or Mexico you can continue to use your phone as you would as if you were in the U.S. The plans that include this type of roaming are:

• All Unlimited plans

If you’re subscribed to one of Verizon’s other plans, you can add North American roaming for $5 per day. This works the same as the TravelPass plan we mentioned earlier — you’re charged per day, but only when you actually use your phone in Canada or Mexico.

So, there are 3 different options for international mobile data on Verizon, but which is the best for you? Here’s why you might pick 1 plan over another.

Stick With Pay as You Go Data If You

• Don’t plan on using your smartphone or will purchase a local SIM card upon arrival. In our opinion, this option is just too risky to be justified.

Subscribe to TravelPass If You

• Are only traveling for a few days at a time — $10 per day can add up quickly!
• Need access to your full data plan and U.S. phone number when traveling abroad.
• Have a data plan with a high (or unlimited) data limit.

Buy a Monthly Travel Plan If You

• Plan to travel for an extended period of time.
• Don’t need to use your phone constantly — unfortunately, the data, text, and call limits are low.

Bottom Line:  Think about how much you need to use your phone when traveling and pick a plan based on that info. Note that you may be better off buying a local SIM card if you need to use your phone extensively for multiple days — this will save you money in the long-run.

Thankfully, enrolling in both the TravelPass and Monthly Travel Plan is simple.

You can enroll in TravelPass by texting “Travel” to 4004 from the phone whose line you’d like to enroll in TravelPass. Then, a new TravelPass will be added every time you use your phone abroad. We recommend doing this before your trip to avoid possible pay as you go charges. Alternatively, you can enroll using this page on the Verizon website.

Further, you can enroll in a Monthly Data Plan by going here . After you log in, you’ll be prompted to choose between the 0.5 GB or 2 GB plan. You can cancel this plan at any time by navigating to the same web page.

Like many carriers, Verizon has international coverage in most parts of Europe, Asia, and South America. However, it’s always wise to check that the country you’re visiting is covered by your carrier before you depart — otherwise, you could have a hard time finding a ride out of the airport once you land.

Verizon posts its full list of supported countries on its website. The carrier boasts that it supports “185+ countries” and while this is less than T-Mobile’s “210+ countries,” we’re unable to find any notable exclusions on the Verizon website. Every tourist destination we could think of was listed on the Verizon website, so you likely won’t have any issue connecting during your travels.

However, this could cause pose problems for those who partake in adventure travel by visiting off-the-beaten-path locations.

Pros and Cons of Verizon’s International Data Plans

There’s no doubting that Verizon isn’t the best plan for most travelers. For the most part, it offers a very limited set of expensive international plans, and none of its plans offer free international roaming like T-Mobile or Google Fi.

However, it’s still important that we run through the carrier’s international data pros and cons so that you can make an informed decision on if Verizon is right for your travel needs.

• Free international roaming within North America on most plans
• Monthly international plans include calling
• TravelPass is automatically enabled once you enroll
• Expensive monthly international plans with small data allowances
• TravelPass can get expensive on long trips
• Likewise, TravelPass pulls data from your domestic data, call, and text allowance
• Less supported countries than T-Mobile, Google Fi, and others

Being frank, we recommend that people who travel often steer clear of Verizon.

Its international data plans are too expensive to be deemed practical, so if you have the choice, we recommend checking out T-Mobile or Google Fi instead. Both of these plans offer free international roaming and more supported countries, giving you a smaller bill and more places to bring your connection.

However, we do understand why one would pick Verizon when traveling within the U.S. The carrier has industry-leading coverage at home and has been shown to offer some of the best speeds. It’s unfortunate that these perks don’t carry over to the carrier’s international coverage.

A lot of the American wireless service providers are essentially copying each other when it comes to international coverage rates. There’s not much that you can do when you have service providers like T-Mobile come in and start offering unlimited 2G coverage in Mexico for their unlimited plan users. As far as the opening question, Can I use my Verizon phone in Mexico the quick answer is yes. That being said, there are plenty of things that you need to be aware of. We have kicked things off with a rant about the speed of the coverage. This is basically something that you’re going to have to deal with virtually with any service provider. As we mentioned T- Mobile was the first to introduce this option, at least from what we were able to gather. The Verizon plan is basically identical now.  

With your regular plan without having to add any type of international day pass you’re going to be able to use your Verizon phone in Mexico. The thing is, that doing so essentially means that you’re stepping into, “the roaming zone”. Verizon calls it the Pay as You Go, payment option. What they are charging is roaming. Verizon also has some very nasty overage fees in some of their plans. We may not get to that today. When using your Verizon phone in Mexico know that data could be slow, but at least it’s unlimited. Calling when you’re in Mexico on your regular plan that’s another story. You could end up with a nasty bill at the end of the month if you don’t keep tabs on this. As we mentioned you are going to be able to use your Verizon phone in Mexico. To make sure though that you’re able to get coverage you need to have the roaming option on your phone set to on. On most phones this is an option that will be on by default. Who knows though, you may have changed it at some point. Just before you get to Mexico or once you arrive make sure that this option is on. Sometimes people will panic about their phone not working abroad. This simple thing that you need to do is what’s holding them back.   

Remember though that when you turn data roaming to on, you’re essentially opening the door to roaming rates. The good thing about this, is that on an unlimited plan you’re going to have unlimited data in Mexico as well. If you’re traveling anywhere else, but Mexico and Canada many of these tips that we’re giving may not apply. Be sure to keep that in mind. As the unlimited data coverage while roaming is not the only luxury that Verizon offers to users who are traveling in those two countries. In the rest of the world data usage runs on massive roaming rates.   

Speed Is Going To Be An Issue 

Speed is going to be the issue if you just take your regular Verizon plan, and use it in Mexico . We talked about the fact that now the company is looking to open up the usage of your regular plan in Mexico and Canada. After you use the first 0.5GB on your plan every single day then your data speed is going to be capped at 2G. When you’re accustomed to 5G speeds cutting that in half is something that you’re going to notice quickly. There’s also a problem with these speeds, and that is that you can start having trouble loading web pages and apps. Verizon is providing the coverage, but you won’t be able to really use that coverage for a whole lot. 

The way to essentially bypass that is to go ahead and buy an international pass. You get one free international pass per month on the 5G do more plan. So that can be an interesting 5 dollar discount if you are in Mexico or Canada. At the end of the day though, it’s a bit of a bait. We talked about this in our T-Mobile article . By offering the coverage they feel many people will head over to Mexico without a real plan to get coverage there. You end up having to buy international passes most days that you’re there because the speed of the coverage that you do get is unbearable.     

If you’re just sticking to the roaming rates, making direct calls can actually be a better way to communicate than texting through apps. We know that for the most part, we advise people who travel abroad to look into these apps. When it comes to asking “Can I use my Verizon phone in Mexico”, regular texts may be a better option. You’re essentially entitled to unlimited calls and texts. What we would advise though is that you make sure that you’re not using up exuberant amounts of data when you make these calls. To do this you have to make sure that any apps that you have open on your phone are not using up data. Really the easiest thing to do is to ensure that any inactive app on your phone remains closed.  

The reason why we recommend this is that you can be very mindful of the amount of data that you’re using up. When you do that you have a better chance of at least extending the amount of time during the day when you will have high speed data without having to buy a travel pass. Meanwhile you can make calls and texts without having to worry about going over the limits and things of that nature. Now, this information is relevant at the time of writing. Beware of capps for minutes and texts on these roaming plans at any minute. We recommend that you give this page a look before you travel. Make sure it still says calls and texts within Mexico and Canada are unlimited.   

Can I Use My Verizon Phone In Mexico – Is The International Travel Pass A Better Option?

Saying that this option is outright “better” is kind of hard. The best scenario though for us, is when you can limit the number of days that you use the Verizon travel pass. It’s a numbers game after all. Every day that you have to use the travel pass it means that you are going to be adding 5 dollars to the total of your phone bill for that month. Those 5 dollars are a per line charge. If you’re traveling with your family of 4, and all of you use the travel pass every single day for 3 days, you can end up really racking up those fees for the end of the month. A lot of people may work their numbers out and feel that maybe paying 60 extra dollars for coverage is no big deal, and more power to you. 

In general though, we feel that most people are going to understand where we are going with this one. It’s a simple concept, the less days that you have to use a travel pass the better. Some folks would argue it’s best to not use the travel pass at all. We would have to actually agree with that assessment. Although, if you want to go without using the travel pass, but also not having headaches over slow speed coverage, just be very mindful of the amount of data that you’re spending on a daily basis!   

There are specific instances where we would certainly say that it would make sense to go out and get a local SIM card. Even though you can now use your Verizon phone in Mexico without at least as much trouble as you’d had before the speed issue is still something to consider. You can get unlimited calls and texts and 3GB of 4G speed for around what it would cost to get the day of the travel pass with Verizon. The credit validity on those 3GB of data is going to be monthly. Once you get your local SIM card you can recharge it for as low as a dollar if you need more data. What we’re trying to get at here, is that you can get more, and faster data for less with a local SIM card. 

Why do we feel that it may not be a great idea for everyone? If you don’t have a dual SIM phone you’d have to remove your existing SIM card to add the local one. That means that the calls, and texts that you get to that phone will never reach you until you put the SIM card back on. If you have a dual SIM phone you can get the best of both worlds. In that sense, getting a local SIM card could be a good idea for everyone. Use your Mexican data when you need to use map apps, or even check your email. Use your Verizon data for texting, outgoing and incoming calls. We could make the argument that it would eliminate the need for a travel pass. Since you can get more, and quicker data for less with a local SIM card.

Wifi Spot Hopping Another Low Cost Option 

Can I use my Verizon phone in Mexico without a dime more for my wireless service? If this is the real question that you have, we’re confident to say that the answer is yes. That being said, it all comes down to having well you’re going to be able to manage your data usage. The main reason why people spend more money on coverage in Mexico when they are Verizon users is the speed issue that we talked about. What you can do is download anything that you need to download when you are connected to a wifi network. Be sure to turn your phone data to off when you’re on the wifi network. Essentially if you need to make calls through apps, or download things you do that when you’re on a wifi network. You can look for spots with wifi with a tool that we recommend here. 

When you take out the bulk of your data usage from your regular plan there’s a better chance of getting to the end of the day with high speed data still available on your regular plan. In essence you’re just being more cautious with your data usage with this strategy. It is though a real way to be able to not have to add extra speed or data to your regular plan. You don’t have to spend an extra dime on Verizon coverage in Mexico.

The short answer is yes. The roaming rates, and maybe more importantly, what is included in your roaming plan certainly seems like a good all around deal. Unlimited calls, and texts for 30 days while you’re abroad. The thing is, when you stay more than 30 days you’re going to have to forcefully look into alternative ways to get coverage. The speed cap on your data usage may be an issue to some, while others are going to be able to breeze through their trip without ever having to worry about the slower speeds. All that you need to do is make sure that you don’t use more than 0.5GB of data per day.  

If you go over the data cap and you still need more speed, paying that extra 5 dollars may not be a major issue for most people. The problems start when those 5 dollars per day begin to pile up. Overall, we would say that if you’re cognizant about the amount of data that you’re spending, and you connect to free wifi when available you’re going to be able to use your Verizon phone in Mexico without too many problems. Global Travel Pass FAQs

Global Travel Pass allows you to pay a flat rate for unlimited calls and text messages while abroad in over 170 covered countries.

Global Travel Pass includes 512 MB of LTE data per pass per day — then data is available at 2G speeds until a new pass is started. The data you use while abroad will count toward your By the Gig or Unlimited data option.

How much does Global Travel Pass cost and how will I be charged? Global Travel Pass is $10 per day per line in over 170 covered countries or $5 per day per line in Mexico and Canada only.

Once you've added Global Travel Pass to a line and international roaming is enabled, you’ll only be charged when the pass is activated. To start an active travel pass session, just make or receive a call, send a text message, or use data while in a covered country .

On our latest price plan, unlimited calls, texts and data from Mexico and Canada to the United States and are included for all customers with the Unlimited or Unlimited Plus data options. For the best experience using data while visiting Mexico and Canada , you may want to switch to the Unlimited Plus option on our latest price plan before traveling.

How do I add Global Travel Pass to a line? To add Global Travel Pass to any phone line on your account online:

• Sign in to your Xfinity Mobile account .
• This will take you to the line details screen.
• Scroll to the Plan Features category, then select Plan your trip in the section labeled International Travel .
• Select Get Global Travel Pass and follow the prompts.
• You’ll see a confirmation screen once you’ve successfully added Global Travel Pass.
• You must do this through your device’s settings.

To add Global Travel Pass to any phone line on your account through the Xfinity app:

• Sign in to the Xfinity app using the Primary user’s Xfinity ID and password.
• Select the Services tab.
• Select the Mobile lines and data usage located within the Mobile services card.
• Scroll to the Plan Features category, select Get Global Travel Pass and follow the prompts.

If you want to add Global Travel Pass to more than one phone line on your account, you can go back and repeat these steps for each line. Remember, your pass won't be activated until you use your phone abroad while in a covered country.

How does Global Travel Pass work?

• Each active session covers a 24-hour period.
• We’ll send you a free text message letting you know that your pass is active.
• About an hour before your active session expires, we’ll send you another free reminder text message.
• A new active session will start automatically if you call, text message, or use data after your current session expires.

What if I didn’t get Global Travel Pass before travel? When your device is enabled on an international network, you’ll get a notification saying whether the country is eligible for Global Travel Pass. If it is, you’ll be prompted to call 1-720-728-5462 toll free to add a pass or get a breakdown of the costs of calls, texts, and data. If the country is not eligible, you’ll just receive a notification breaking down the cost of calls, texts, and data.

Which countries are covered by Global Travel Pass? Global Travel Pass is currently available in over 170 countries . You’ll automatically be charged pay-as-you-go rates in countries where Global Travel Pass isn’t available.

Are cruise ships or airplanes covered by Global Travel Pass? No. Global Travel Pass does not cover usage on cruise ships or airplanes, but you can still pay as you go to talk, text message, and use data while aboard. To view rates, go to our international rate search and type in “Cruise Ships” or "Aircraft Service."

What happens if I travel to multiple countries during an active Global Travel Pass session? You can travel to any other country covered by Global Travel Pass during your 24-hour active session, and you’ll only be charged once. If you travel to a country that isn’t covered by Global Travel Pass during an active session, you’ll be charged the pay-as-you-go rate for that country.

What happens if I remove Global Travel Pass from a line? Removing Global Travel Pass from a line during an active session will prevent a new pass from starting. You can remove Global Travel Pass at any time to pay as you go for calls, text messages, and data while abroad.

Do I need to remove Global Travel Pass when I return home? There’s no need to remove Global Travel Pass once you return home, since you’ll only be charged for a pass during an active session when you call, text message, or use data abroad. Global Travel Pass can stay on your line until you’re ready to use it the next time you travel internationally. You can always remove Global Travel Pass at any time through your account online or through our app.

If I’ve used the maximum LTE data allowance for Global Travel Pass, can I get more? You get 512 MB of LTE data per pass. Once you’ve reached this limit, you’ll have data available for use at 2G speeds until a new pass activates. The data you use while abroad will count toward your By the Gig or Unlimited data option. If you need to use a lot of data while abroad, connecting to WiFi can give you faster speeds.

Can I add Global Travel Pass to my tablet or smartwatch with Xfinity Mobile? No. At this time, Global Travel Pass can only be added to mobile phone lines.

Will I be charged roaming data charges while connected to WiFi? Some Apple and Android devices can enable their WiFi Calling feature to make free international calls from anywhere in the world where WiFi is available.
