The 5 Best Down-Alternative Pillows

For soft and fluffy pillows, down alternatives are one of the best options if you don’t want real down pillows (or don’t want to pay a premium for down). Down-alternative pillows are also ideal for people with allergies, since they are most commonly filled with hypoallergenic synthetics. “Essentially, you get all the good stuff with no flare-ups,” as chiropractor Dr. Ben Carvosso put it to me. They are often also totally machine-washable — another pro for those with allergies. And, best of all, they’re usually way less expensive than other pillow styles.

To put together this list of the best down-alternative pillows, I consulted three physical-health experts about the benefits of down-alternative pillows and to get their recommendations of specific pillows. I also asked the Strategist staff for their recommendations, considered pillows I’ve previously tested, and finally tested five new down-alternative pillows myself to sort out the best of the best. What we’re looking for

Most down-alternative pillows are filled with a synthetic fiber fill — often polyester, also called polyfill. Though some down-alternative pillows are filled with natural materials like cotton, kapok, silk, or bamboo fiber, synthetic fibers are overwhelmingly common in this category. Still, just because two pillows are both made with polyfill doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll feel exactly the same. The thickness of the individual fibers (keep an eye out for the term denier — a lower denier means the fibers are thinner; a higher one means the fibers are thicker) and how densely the filling is stuffed can subtly alter how soft or firm a polyester-filled pillow feels.

Synthetic pillow fills are also usually the cheapest type of down alternative, as well as hypoallergenic (though you’ll still need to clean your pillow regularly). However, they are also less environmentally friendly than some natural materials, since they are basically plastic.

Loft is the height of a pillow, which plays a big role in how well it supports your head and neck. Depending on your main sleeping position ( back , side , or stomach) and your body size, you may need a higher or lower loft. Side sleepers typically need a higher loft, back sleepers typically need a medium loft, and stomach sleepers typically need a low loft to keep their head, neck, and spine in alignment. However, most down-alternative pillows are fairly compressive, meaning they squish down under the weight of your head and neck. So many down-alternative pillows can look quite lofty, but end up feeling lower as they settle when you lie down.

Firmness and support

Down-alternative pillows tend to be softer, since they are mimicking the feel of down — a material sought for pillows because of its softness. There is still some variation available, but if you want something truly firm, I’d recommend a denser fill, such as memory foam or latex . Down-alternative pillows can also vary in their support levels, even if they are soft. If a pillow is stuffed with a greater amount of fill, it can feel more supportive and will be less likely to compress beneath your head and neck. With less filling, your head and neck might sink through the pillow more easily. For each pillow, I’ve listed the firmness as soft, medium-soft, medium, medium-firm, or firm. Like loft, you can use your sleeping position as a starting point to determine what firmness is best for you. As a rule of thumb, side sleepers need a firmer pillow, back sleepers need a medium pillow, and stomach sleepers need a soft one.

Best down-alternative pillow overall

Fill type: Polyester fiber | Loft: Varies slightly by density, roughly medium to high | Firmness: Soft, medium, or firm

The first night I slept on this Boll & Branch Down-Alternative pillow, I double-checked the label to make sure the brand hadn’t accidentally sent me their real down pillow. The pillow felt so plush it was hard to believe it wasn’t the real thing. Boll & Branch offers this pillow in three densities, where the same pillow is stuffed with increasing amounts of fill to get a higher loft and firmer feel. I tried the medium version, which offered a pleasant mix of support and cushioning. I even felt my neck was fairly well-supported while side sleeping , which can be difficult to find in down-alternative pillows, since they are often soft and sink-y. The soft version would likely be a good choice for most stomach sleepers, while the firm would be good for back and side sleepers who like a firmer feel and/or want extra support.

Between feeling so similar to real down and actually being fairly supportive (with three density options), the Boll & Branch won the top spot for this list. And while not extremely cheap, it’s around the $100 mark, depending on which density and size you choose, so it’s less expensive than some of my other favorite pillows that have other (generally more expensive) fill types. It has a cotton shell, which is a nice touch for some added breathability, too.

Best (less expensive) down-alternative pillow overall

Fill type: Polyester fiber | Loft: Medium | Firmness: Medium

This two-pack of pillows holds a pretty close candle to the Boll & Branch pillow above with a price per pillow that’s less than half the cost. They are surprisingly supportive, while still feeling plush and down-y. Each is covered with a cotton shell and filled with polyester fiber fill, just like the Boll & Branch. When I tested them, I slept on my back and side and found both positions pretty comfortable — my neck felt well-supported without being cranked into any awkward position in either. Senior editor Jen Trolio is also a back and side sleeper and liked the fluffy feel of the Beckham pillows enough to buy additional pillows for her kids. They’re also a good choice for stomach sleepers, according to Strategist writer Arielle Avila, who rotates between her side and stomach easily on these pillows.

Despite all these pros, the Boll & Branch pillow still won out for me because of the three density options (the Beckham pillows come in just one density) and because the fill of the Boll & Branch has a slightly airier feel that I felt was more akin to actual down. Comparing them side by side, I think the Beckham pillow has a slightly faster response time after I press into it — which may be preferable to some people!) — but the slower response in the Boll & Branch feels more downlike to me.

Best adjustable-fill down-alternative pillow

Fill type: “Ultra-soft” microfiber | Loft: Adjustable | Firmness: Adjustable, arrives medium-soft

Adjustable pillows are a great option for people who want to get their pillow “just right” for their taste. But they tend not to be made with down-alternative fills — the Chinchilla pillow is one of the few that I’ve found. It’s filled with an ultrafluffy microfiber fill that looks a bit like cotton balls. To adjust the pillow, you simply unzip it and remove some of the fill, which will lower the loft and reduce the firmness of the pillow. It arrives fairly soft and with a low loft, however, so I doubt most people will need to make major adjustments — I didn’t need to change much to get comfortable on this pillow. Still, having the option to adjust makes this pillow customizable in a way that most other down-alternative pillows just aren’t. The ability to customize could be helpful for people who are simply extremely picky about their pillow, or who aren’t quite sure what they want from their pillow yet and want to experiment — just keep in mind you are paying a little extra with this pillow for that adjustability, compared to other down-alternative pillows. Beyond the fill, this pillow also has a bamboo-polyester blend cover. You can remove the cover to wash separately, but like most down alternatives, the entire pillow is machine-washable too.

Best down-alternative pillow for neck support

Fill type: Polyester microfiber fill | Loft: Mid-loft or low-loft | Firmness: Medium-firm

Down-alternative pillows often aren’t as supportive as other styles (like memory-foam or latex pillows ). To maximize neck support, chiropractor Dr. Sapna Sriram recommends a down-alternative pillow with a supportive inner core. One such pillow is the Casper Original pillow. It’s filled with polyester microfiber fill, like many other down-alternative pillows, but it uses a pillow-in-a-pillow design to provide more support. The inner pillow is more densely filled to provide the neck support; it sits inside the zippered outer pillow, which has microfiber fill lightly stuffed on each side to add additional plushness. Together, this makes for a cushy yet supportive pillow.

Strategist writer Brenley Goertzen is a longtime fan of this pillow and loves it so much she evangelizes about it to her family members, who have been convinced to buy their own. A stomach and side sleeper, Goertzen says the pillow gives her enough support on her side while still feeling comfortable when she’s on her stomach.

Best natural-filling down-alternative pillow

Fill type: Mulberry silk | Loft: Low | Firmness: Soft

Most down-alternatives are filled with a synthetic fiber, but this silk-filled pillow from Cozy Earth makes for a great natural-fill option. This pillow is covered with a bamboo cover and filled with mulberry silk, giving it an ultrasoft feel and excellent temperature regulation (it’s one of my favorite cooling pillows , too). Though this pillow is very soft and compressed a fair amount underneath my head, I felt comfortable laying on my back with this pillow. I think it could also work well for many stomach sleepers, as they’ll be able to sink in without their necks being pushed upwards. And while I didn’t find it quite supportive enough for side sleeping, Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens, a side and back sleeper, stacks her Cozy Earth Silk pillow on top of a firmer pillow for the perfect balance of plushness and support. This pillow is significantly more expensive than the others on this list, but seeing as silk is an all-natural material (that tends to be costly anyway), it’s no surprise that it costs more than pillows filled with polyester.

If you're travelling internationally and returning to Canada with your dog, there are some essential steps you'll need to take.

Many countries, including Canada, have stringent requirements for dogs entering from abroad, to prevent the spread of diseases.

Some dog import requirements must be completed at specific times. It is your responsibility to make sure that your dog meets all the requirements and you have all the relevant documents prepared before travelling to or from Canada. If you fail to do so, your dog may be refused entry.

Long journeys can also have a serious impact on your dog's health and well-being.

On August 1, 2024, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is changing their requirements for dogs entering the U.S.

1. Meet Canada's dog import requirements

If you're travelling to or returning to Canada with your dog, you will need to meet specific import requirements. These requirements depend on various factors, such as

• the country of origin
• the age of the dog
• the purpose of the import, and
• whether or not the dog will be accompanied by the owner to Canada

Before you plan any travel arrangements, find the requirements for your specific situation .

It is your responsibility to make sure that all the requirements are met before travelling to Canada.

If you're travelling to another country from Canada, you will also need to meet the other country's import requirements .

2. Consult a veterinarian

Talk to your veterinarian to consider the risks of travelling and confirm that your dog is healthy and has all the required tests, vaccinations and treatments to enter Canada and the country you are travelling to. Ensure that all of your dog's records are ready and up-to-date, and that the required documentation is completed.

3. Prepare for travel by air

Airlines may require additional documentation or have additional requirements when travelling with an animal by air. Check with your airline to determine what requirements are needed for your situation.

You'll also want to do some preparations in advance, such as finding the appropriately sized crate and training your dog to its new surroundings. See more detailed information on travelling by air from the International Air Transport Association.

4. Copies of the required documentation

Print out hard copies and retain digital versions of all the documents that support the necessary import requirements.

It is your responsibility to make sure that all the information in your documents is correct before travelling to or from Canada.

Dogs that don't meet the CFIA's requirements

If a dog arrives at the border and does not meet Canada's import requirements, the situation will be reviewed and a decision made regarding the animal's eligibility to enter Canada. Depending on the facts of the case and the non-compliance(s) with CFIA requirements, the animal may be ordered to be removed from Canada, fines may be applied or legal actions may be pursued.

Adopting or buying a dog from abroad

Dogs acquired from outside of Canada will also need to meet import requirements. It is your responsibility as the dog owner to make sure the dog is eligible to be brought into Canada.

From August 1, 2024, Onward: Entry Requirements for U.S.-Vaccinated Dogs from High-Risk Countries

There are 2 documents required if your dog was vaccinated against rabies in the U.S. and has been in a high-risk country for dog rabies in the 6 months before entering or returning to the U.S.

Requirements include:

• The CDC Dog Import Form receipt: You complete this form online. It will only take a few minutes if you have the required information available.
• A Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination form or a USDA-endorsed export health certificate: These forms are filled out by your veterinarian and endorsed by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)-accredited veterinarian .

These dogs can enter the U.S. at any airport, seaport, or land border crossing, as long as the port matches your CDC Dog Import Form receipt.

What else is required for dogs from high-risk countries?

In addition to the forms above:

• Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.
• Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry or return to the U.S.
• Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them. The microchip must be implanted before getting the rabies vaccine, or else the vaccine will be invalid. The microchip number must be included on all required forms and supporting documents.

Each dog must have its own form. If you are bringing more than one dog to the United States, you must complete a separate form for each dog.

You can fill out the form on the day of travel. We recommend completing it a few days before travel. If anything changes, like date of travel or port of entry, you must submit a new form.

What information will I need to complete the form?

Please upload a recent picture (jpg, png, gif files only) of your dog, showing its face and body. Dogs under one year old should have their photograph taken within 15 days before travel to the U.S.

Microchip number

Make sure to enter your dog’s microchip number accurately into this form. You can typically find this number on a dog’s veterinary records.

How long is the form's receipt valid?

The receipt is valid for a single entry into the U.S. and is valid for entry only on the date of arrival listed on the receipt. The form can be submitted any time before travel, except for dogs less than one year of age whose photo should be taken within 15 days before travel to the U.S.

How do I show the form's receipt to officials?

Make sure all the information on the form, including the arrival port for your dog, is accurate before your dog arrives. If any information changes before departure, you must submit a new form and indicate that you are changing an existing form.

A USDA-accredited veterinarian must complete these government-endorsed documents before the dog departs the U.S. Veterinarians, please refer to the instructions for completing the documents.

A USDA-accredited veterinarian completes the form. This can be the veterinarian who gave the dog their vaccine or another veterinarian at the same practice where the dog was vaccinated. Check with your veterinary clinic whether there is a USDA-accredited veterinarian in the practice. Costs are determined by the veterinarian and the USDA. Visit USDA’s website for a list of USDA costs. Contact the veterinarian to request the costs for their services.

The veterinarian can visit From August 1 Onward: Documents for Veterinarians to Complete for Importing a Dog into the U.S. , where they will find the form and instructions. The veterinarian will complete the form in USDA’s online system and submit it to USDA for endorsement. You can get a copy of the  Certification of U.S.-Issued Rabies Vaccination  form from the veterinarian once it has been officially endorsed by the USDA.

Your dog must meet specific requirements, like being microchipped and having a valid rabies vaccination, before the veterinarian can complete the form. If your dog is receiving its first rabies vaccine, the form must be completed at least 28 days after the vaccine was administered.

How long is the form valid?

You can use this form multiple times to enter the U.S. as long as your dog’s rabies vaccine is still valid. Usually, the vaccine lasts for 1 or 3 years.

Military families overseas scrambling as U.S. dog travel rules change

A number of military families stationed overseas are scrambling to find other arrangements for transporting their dogs back to the United States because of new regulations taking effect Aug. 1 — in the middle of the military’s heavy moving season.

Families are posting on Facebook about departure dates happening as soon as the first weeks of August — but now transportation is uncertain for their dogs due to new U.S. regulations and some airlines refusing to allow dogs to travel back to the states.

“Why do things always have to be so complicated for military families to bring our pet family members with us when we move?” one military wife asked on the platform. “As if moving far from home and family every few years isn’t stressful enough.”

The issue stems from new requirements from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that take effect Aug. 1, aimed at preventing the introduction of dog rabies into the United States. While dog rabies was eliminated in the United States in 2007, there are over 100 countries where dog rabies isn’t controlled, according to the CDC.

The new regulations will be cumbersome for some military families, and there’s some confusion. But the more immediate problem is that eight airlines will stop allowing dogs to travel back to the states with their families either in the cabin or as excess baggage in the cargo hold.

German airline Lufthansa is the most recent airline to make the announcement. “Due to new restrictions imposed by the U.S. authorities it is no longer possible to import dogs into the USA after 1 August 2024 until further notice,” the Lufthansa website states.

The abrupt policy changes have some military advocates baffled by it all.

“I 100% agree we have to protect the population from rabies,” said Liz Hensel, CEO of Leave No Paws Behind USA. “But there must be a better way than to leave hundreds of military families stranded in a situation where they have no idea what to do with their dogs,” she said.

There are more than 100,000 service members stationed in Europe alone, she noted. It remains to be seen how this will play out around the world.

“Our household pets really help with mental health not only for the men and women serving, but for the family dynamic as a whole,” said Hensel, a veteran who is also the 2024 Armed Forces Insurance Marine Corps Spouse of the Year.

The decision by Lufthansa is “heartbreaking,” as the airline has been one of the most pet friendly airlines for military families, Hensel said.

The new CDC requirements standardize the process for importing dogs, including standard requirements for the minimum age of imported dogs, microchips, the CDC Dog Import Form, and other documentation. This will “streamline the importation process and allow for safer and more efficient entry of dogs into the United States,” according to the CDC.

The rules require some documentation that generally only commercial pet shippers were required to do, and which could require extra steps such as translating the CDC form into the local language for host-nation veterinarians and their supervisors, Hensel said.

Hensel is advocating for urgent policy adjustments by the CDC, including exemptions for military families in recognition of their unique circumstances; increased quarantine and vaccination facilities; airline partnerships; and streamlined import processes with clear and consistent guidelines.

Lawmakers have stepped in to urge the CDC director to allow an 18-month delay in implementation of the blanket requirements, because the rules affect low-risk dogs personally owned by various types of individuals.

A July 8 letter from Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., has been signed by six additional members of Congress. Among other things, the dog import form has caused concern because of its delayed public availability and potential concern among dog owners, Langworthy wrote.

Information was not immediately available from the CDC about whether any solutions are being considered for military families.

Hensel speculates that the airlines are backing away from transporting the pets with their families on the same flight because they don’t want to be held liable.

According to the CDC website, if their rules aren’t followed, the dog won’t be allowed to enter the U.S. “If denied entry, your dog will be sent back to the last country of departure at your expense. Country of departure is where the last trip originated—not where the dog was born or where it lives,” officials state.

Many military families will now be forced to use pet shippers, which can continue to ship on the airlines, Hensel said.

But the cost will be a great hardship for many families.

“What has been costing around $400 will now be over $2,000,” she said, noting that the cost to ship a dog overseas through a pet shipper could be anywhere from $2,500 to over $4,000, depending on the dog, location and other factors.

Hensel worked for four years to advocate for a law to allow service members to be reimbursed for up to $2,000 of pet transportation expenses to or from overseas during a PCS move, and up to $550 for pet transportation in a move within the continental U.S. DOD implemented that benefit Jan. 1.

“And now this?” she said.

Military issues new details on reimbursing pet travel costs

Troops can receive up to $2,000 for transporting one pet to or from overseas during a permanent change of station..

Limited spaces are available to transport dogs on military-contracted Patriot Express flights on PCS moves, although U.S. Transportation Command increased the cabin flight spaces from 10 to 20, in 2021.

TRANSCOM officials are aware of the issue, said spokesman Nate Allen.

“This is where the conversations between passengers and their local transportation management offices are crucial,” he said. “While there is no immediate plan to increase pet spaces, if presented with a significant increase in requirements, we have and will engage with commercial partners to increase capacity where possible.”

Passengers traveling on the Patriot Express flights will also be required to comply with the CDC’s new import requirements, Allen said.

One family posted that they are being relocated stateside for a humanitarian reassignment, which is already stressful.

“I literally don’t know how I’m going to get our dog home with us,” the military wife posted. “This is to the point I’m in tears. This is just another stressor military families don’t need.”

CDC simplifies rules for crossing the border with a dog after public outcry

In response to public outcry from dog owners, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is simplifying regulations for entering the United States with your dog starting Aug. 1.

The updated rules require all dogs entering from a no or low-risk rabies country, which includes Canada, to be ISO-microchipped, at least 6 months old, and have receipt of a completed Dog Import Form (a free, 5-minute, online form). The update also allows for waiver requests for the airline industry.

Previously, the CDC had said it would require American dog owners to have a U.S. Department of Agriculture-endorsed rabies vaccine certificate. Meeting these requirements could have taken weeks and cost hundreds of dollars.

"These updates incorporate the feedback received from the public, industry partners, and various countries on the dog importation rule, and clarify and simplify the processes for those bringing dogs from dog rabies-free or low-risk countries," the CDC said in a statement.

Dog owners are celebrating, but problems around the 6 month age requirement for dogs and the overall confusion of so many changes remains.

“We mostly won!” said Deborah Williams of Colden, New York, who said the updated regulations will allow her to continue frequently crossing the border to Canada with her golden lab, Sam. 

But Williams is upset at how the CDC has handled the new rules overall. "It was a mess. So many people changed their travel plans, which was unnecessary," she said. "This should not be how a preeminent public health organization conducts their business."

According to a recent survey of 1,000 U.S. pet owners by Rover, a pet care marketplace, 35% of dog owners weren't confident they understood the new travel regulations for dogs entering the United States.

About 400,000 people cross the U.S.-Canadian border every day, while 45% of U.S. households own a dog, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

"The guidelines have been revamped several times in the past month alone, the situation remains extremely fluid. Pet parents should be sure to check both the CDC website and their family veterinarian to keep apprised of the latest developments," said Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, a veterinary medical advisor for Rover.

The CDC's 6-month minimum age requirement for dogs is also problematic for some. “That still doesn’t make sense to me since most puppies can get rabies vaccinated at 3 or 4 months," Williams said. "Breeders who sell puppies under 6 months across the border will lose business."

Wilma Herrera, 55, who runs US Dog Coalition and Rescue in North Carolina, agrees: “The CDC update is a step in the right direction, but the 6-month rule needs to be reconsidered.” Herrera said the original rules would have caused her to stop her dog rescue but the update allows her to continue, with a bit more hassle.

"The 6 month age requirement is not new for dogs from high risk countries and the updated regulation effective Aug. 1st makes this requirement consistent for all dogs entering the United States," Dave Daigle, spokesperson for the CDC, said in an email. "Additionally, the new age standard more closely aligns U.S. regulations with the World Organization of Animal Health's standards."

The simplified rules come after months of negative feedback to the CDC. In May, the agency announced new regulations for entering the United States with a dog starting Aug. 1 out of an increased concern for dog rabies. The Aug. 1 regulations caused mass outcry, with dog owners saying the regulations were unfair and extreme and 14 senators signing a bipartisan letter asking the CDC to reconsider its policy.

The American Veterinary Medical Association was one of the few organizations that supported the CDC's original regulations and continues to support the simplified rules. “The AVMA supports the CDC’s efforts to improve dog importation standards with the intent of protecting animal health, animal welfare, and public health," said Dr. Sandra Faeh, association president.

When Angie and Gary Engelgau relocated from Hawaii to Oregon earlier this month, they never anticipated the tragic loss of their French Bulldog, Frank. 

Frank died from overheating at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu as the family waited to board the plane.

“My first call was supposed to be to my brother to see if we could stop by the next day on our way to southern Oregon, but it was to pet cremation places,” Angie Engelgau told USA TODAY. 

The family arrived at the Honolulu airport, which is indoor-outdoor, around 10 a.m. for their Alaska Airlines flight to Portland. The couple and their 18-year-old son had their three dogs – Frank, Charlie and Fawn – in tow.

According to Honolulu Airport policy , all dogs except service animals, detection dogs, or those confined for shipment or in a carrier are not allowed to be in the terminals. For potty breaks, there are several outdoor pet relief areas. 

The family said they’ve flown with their pets on Alaska Airlines before – and the crew typically turned up the air conditioning on the plane. Alaska Airlines charges $100 per pet, and cats and dogs that can fit in a carrier under the seat in front of you can fly in the cabin, according to its website . Since four-year-old Frank was a brachycephalic, or short-nosed breed, and is more susceptible to overheating or respiratory distress, he was not allowed to fly in the cargo, and had to be in the cabin.

“Hawaii is not a dog-friendly state, and the airport is especially not dog-friendly,” Angie Engelgau said. When the family flew from Portland International Airport and San Francisco International Airport previously, the indoor air-conditioned terminals kept the dogs cooled down. 

The morning of June 30 in Hawaii was hot, and it was difficult to give the dogs some relief, Angie Engelgau said. “We broke the rules,” she said. “We kept them out of the carrier for about 45 minutes, gave them cold water and shade.”

When it was time to board, the family made their way to the gate, hoping to get on the aircraft early with the three dogs — where there was hopefully strong air conditioning. Frank was in his air carrier as the family waited at the gate, which they said was also hot. 

“People were hot, imagine how hot a dog is,” Angie Engelgau said. She said she kept asking the gate agents if Frank could be taken out of the carrier, but the request was denied.

“The thing that baffles me is that it is illegal to leave your dog in a hot car, but it’s mandatory to leave them in a hot carrier,” Angie Engelgau said. “That doesn’t make sense to me.”

The family waited approximately 30 minutes to board the plane, and when they finally got on, they said it felt warm inside. At that time, Frank was panting loudly. “Everyone was wondering what that noise was,” Gary Engelgau said. 

The family opened the carrier to fan Frank down and repeatedly asked the flight attendants for ice. By the time the ice came, it was too late. Frank had passed. 

“This was 100% completely avoidable if Alaska had acted quicker to try to get us ice,” Gary Engelgau said. “We understand things are crazy but when you can hear an animal is in distress, you can hear him outside the plane.” 

In a statement to USA TODAY, Alaska Airlines said: “We take the care of pets flying with us seriously and we’re saddened by the reported loss of this guest’s pet. Our crew members followed their processes as it relates to pets on board aircraft and took extra care of the guests for the duration of the flight.”

Frank died before the plane took off, leaving his family heartbroken, traumatized, and frustrated over the treatment that led to his death. The Engelgaus were moved to the back of the plane, where they grieved for the six-hour-long flight. “Our son was sitting a few rows behind us, he thought Frank threw up, but we’re holding our lifeless dog,” Angie Engelgau said. Two of the flight attendants also cried, she said. The Engelgau's other dogs, including Frank's sister Charlie, are dealing with the loss of their brother.

“He was so sweet and loving,” Angie Engelgau said. “We don’t want Frank to die for nothing, we want the rules changed for animals.”

Angie Engelgau said she wishes Honolulu Airport loosened their rules on pets, like allowing pets on a leash with a muzzle, or if passengers could purchase seats for their dogs. “I do understand some people don’t like dogs,” she said. “That shouldn’t mean this person doesn’t like dogs, so your dogs should risk death trying to fly.”

Is it safe to fly with your dogs?

Air travel with pets is tricky – whether the pet is in the cabin or cargo – and airlines and airports each have different pet policies. “It’s logistically challenging, and the vast majority of times animals travel very safely, and the airlines do a great job, but … the system’s not perfect,” Dr. Kenyon Conklin, a veterinarian who helps military families relocate with their pets, told USA TODAY. 

The Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report revealed seven animal deaths out of the 188,223 animals transported by U.S. airlines in 2022.  

For breeds like Frank’s, air travel is even trickier. “What makes them very cute and very attractive also means they have a very, very difficult time with regulating their body temperature and heat,” she said. These breeds, in particular, find it challenging to tolerate hot weather and humidity.

Since people are limited in what they can bring onboard, it can be difficult to provide their pets with relief. “Getting some paws in some cool water, you can’t do because if you take your pet out or if you’re potentially unzipping a crate and reaching in for your pet, they do have the right to have you not travel in the future or even if I assume to ask you off the plane,” Dr. Conklin said. “There are just not a lot of great alternatives for those situations.”

Flying with your pet in the cargo can also be nervewracking for passengers. Airlines will often put limits on how many animals can go in the cargo or, depending on the season, if it’s too hot or cold, according to Dr. Conklin. The cargo area is also pressurized to about 8,000 feet, which can cause blood pressure changes that may not be a big deal for a young, healthy animal but could pose serious health risks for one with an undiagnosed heart issue. Pets typically need a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian to fly in the cargo.

“Just by the nature of air transport, no matter how well the airlines try to do it, there are always going to be stretches of time where these animals are unsupervised,” she said. Sometimes, owners won’t even be on the same flight with their pets due to certain limitations. 

“Pets are in a compromised position, and they’re not as resilient as we are,” Dr. Conklin said. “They can’t say, “Hey, I’m having a problem.’”
