California hospital told woman's family she had checked out when she was actually dead, lawsuit says

Northern California hospital officials told a 31-year-old woman's family that she had checked out — when the patient had actually died and her body was kept in cold storage for a year, loved ones said in a civil lawsuit.

Jessie Marie Peterson had been suffering from Type 1 diabetes when she was admitted to Mercy San Juan Medical Center on April 6 last year, according to allegations in a lawsuit Peterson’s family filed this month in Sacramento County Superior Court.

Days after Peterson was admitted, her mother, Ginger Congi, called Mercy San Juan to check on her daughter and was told she had been discharged, according to the complaint.

The family filed a missing person's report with the county sheriff's department, posted notices around town and even interviewed local homeless people in hope someone had seen Peterson.

"The family searched and searched for Jessie. It was not until April 12, 2024, that the Sacramento County Detective’s Office notified Jessie’s family that she was found deceased at Mercy San Juan hospital," according to the lawsuit filed by the plaintiffs' attorney Marc Greenberg.

"At this point, Jessie’s body was so decomposed that an open casket funeral was not feasible, and Jessie’s fingerprints were not even obtainable for any keepsake," it says.

The decomposition also made it impossible for an autopsy to determine "whether medical malpractice played any role" in Peterson's death, the lawsuit says.

The family eventually found out Peterson died on April 8 last year, but it took until April 4 of this year for Dr. Nadeem Mukhtar to sign a death certificate.

For almost all that time, Peterson's body had been kept on shelf No. Red 22A in an off-site cold storage unit, according to hospital records obtained by the family.

The family is asking for $25 million, alleging negligence.

A representative for Dignity Health, the corporate umbrella for the hospital, could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

"Mercy San Juan hospital advertises that 'at our care facilities, we take pride in treating all people with dignity and respect.' In this case, there was no dignity and no respect," Greenberg said.

"Mercy San Juan hospital failed in its most fundamental duty to notify Jessie’s family of her death," he said. "Mercy San Juan stored Jessie in an off-site warehouse and she was left to decompose for nearly a year while her family relentlessly inquired about her whereabouts."

A new, potentially more deadly strain of the virus is rapidly spreading within Africa and has been discovered in Asia and Europe.

The mpox virus is spreading internationally, and more countries, some very far from the initial location of the outbreak in East Africa, have confirmed cases of a new and potentially deadlier strain in the past week.

Where has mpox spread?

So far, four countries – Sweden, Thailand, Philippines and Pakistan – have reported mpox cases outside the African continent. Fourteen countries in Africa have reported cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated last week that the virus has become a “public health emergency of international concern”. While the WHO has been at pains to emphasise that mpox is “ not the new COVID “, this is the second emergency alert relating to mpox from the global health agency in two years.

The current outbreak has been triggered by Clade 1, believed to be a more serious variant of the mpox virus than has appeared before and which can spread through skin-to-skin contact.

Mpox has been spreading in African countries since 2022 and was originally traced to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In 2023, a new strain of the Clade 1 variant was discovered in the country – known as Clade 1b. African countries are reporting both Clade 1 and Clade 1b strains.

Simultaneously, a different outbreak of the virus’s earlier Clade 2 variant is also spreading although at much lower levels.

The Clade 2 strain caused a multicountry mpox outbreak in 2022, which spread mainly via sexual contact. Cases of that strain had been reported in more than 100 countries by last month.

Clade 2 is believed to cause milder infections. The fatality rate is 0.2 percent compared with 3.9 percent for Clade 1. The WHO officially declared the outbreak over in May 2023, but cases are still being recorded.

Here’s where mpox disease has spread from January to August this year:

According to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the governments of Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda and the Ivory Coast, the Clade 1 variant of mpox has been detected in the following countries this year:

• Burundi (eight cases, zero deaths)
• Cameroon (35, two)
• Central African Republic (213, zero)
• Ivory Coast (28, one)
• Republic of Congo (146, one)
• DRC (13,791, 450)
• Ghana (four, zero)
• Liberia (five, zero)
• Nigeria (24, zero)
• Rwanda (two, zero)
• South Africa (22, three)
• Uganda (two, zero)
• Kenya (one, zero)
• Mozambique (one, zero)

The DRC is experiencing the biggest outbreak of the disease ever recorded with thousands of people infected as of August 21. The government declared an epidemic in December 2022 .

Nearly all reported cases – 96 percent – across Africa are in the DRC, where children younger than 15 account for 60 percent of the cases, Africa CDC said.

The new Clade 1b strain is also rapidly spreading. It has been detected in least three countries neighbouring the DRC this year: Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. These countries had not previously reported any cases since the outbreak began in 2022.

So far, 541 deaths have been recorded in total from mpox, with 535 in the DRC (97 percent). The Africa CDC does not classify deaths according to strain. Most deaths have been children.

In the Ivory Coast, authorities said, the outbreak is linked to the 2022 Clade 2 variant.

The Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan have all reported new mpox cases this month.

In Thailand, authorities confirmed a new case of Clade 1b on Thursday, in Asia’s first case of the new strain.

The individual, identified as a 66-year-old European male, reportedly returned from an unnamed African country currently experiencing a “large” outbreak of the Clade 1 variant before reporting to health authorities. He reportedly does not have serious symptoms and was believed to have transited through a Middle Eastern country before arriving in Thailand.

In the Philippines, authorities said the milder Clade 2 variant has been confirmed as the cause of the most recent case there and it has likely been spreading quietly for a while. The patient is a 33-year-old Filipino male with no travel history. It is the country’s 10th confirmed case since 2022.

Pakistani authorities said the first patient reported there this year is a male and he was infected with the Clade 2 variant. However, authorities said last week that they could not locate the infected patient. He is believed to have travelled to another province before the test results were released. Authorities said they are trying to trace him.

•  Sweden (one case, zero deaths)

Only one country in Europe – Sweden – has reported an mpox case. The infection was reported on August 15 and has been confirmed to be the more serious Clade 1 variant.

It is “highly likely” that the European region will record more cases of the Clade 1 variant because of frequent air travel between Europe and Africa, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

However, sustained transmission might be low in Europe if cases are quickly diagnosed and if testing, surveillance and contact tracing are used, the agency said. The European Union has ruled out closing its borders to hard-hit countries.

Americas, Middle East, Oceania and Antarctica

No countries in North or South America have new cases of Clade 1 mpox so far.

However, countries in the Americas should be “alert” to possible Clade 1 and Clade 2 cases, the Pan American Health Organization said in a statement on August 9.

The region reported more than 62,000 cases of the Clade 2 virus from 2022 to July 2024, including 141 deaths.

There are no confirmed cases of the Clade 1 mpox virus in Oceania or the Middle East.

Group drives hours to visit abandoned GA hospital they saw on TikTok. Now they’re facing charges

A group of four north Georgians saw an abandoned hospital in Newnan while scrolling TikTok and decided to pay it a visit.

The old Newnan Hospital was shut down in 2012 and has sat empty since then, according to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

Earlier this week, Newnan police were called to the hospital after a security guard spotted four people inside and saw one of them with a gun.

They were later identified as Brandon Baird, 19, Atlanta McCure, 18, Madison Perez, 18, and Gavin Shoilekov, 21. McCure is from Jasper and the others have addresses listed in Ellijay.

After they were spotted, all four ran out of the building. Newnan officers found a shirtless Baird and chased him down the street until he was arrested.

The other three were seen walking towards the Coweta County Jail and taken into custody.

They said that Shoilekov had a gun, but threw it when they were leaving the hospital.

Officers found a window that had been smashed from the inside, which security officers confirmed was not already there.

Perez’s car was found near the hospital and towed off.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in the Czech Republic, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

Foreigners who fear Czech doctor visits have a new option in Prague

The newly opened my clinic wants to ease some of the culture shocks associated with the czech healthcare system..

One of the first major shocks for foreigners living in the Czech Republic is the country’s healthcare system. Though affordable, efficient, and effective there are some boxes it just doesn’t tick when it comes to patient care.

But while the uninitiated may assume their doctor’s brusque bedside manner has to do with the straight-shooting Czech mentality, there’s actually another reason your first encounter with the country’s healthcare system may feel a little rushed.

Martin Šimonek is the CEO of MY CLINIC , a newly opened Prague medical center on a mission to change the narrative when it comes to patient care in the Czech Republic. He said that what many foreigners perceive as a cold bedside manner is something different entirely.

“It's a structural thing. When you have a private doctor’s office that takes all of its patients from public healthcare, the doctors get a fee for the service, and the more services or individual treatments they do the more they get paid. As a result, you don't have time to engage in a deeper conversation.”

Šimonek, who spent several years in London studying social science as it relates to healthcare financing says that it's this lack of engagement and conversation that can lead to patients feeling a bit victimized upon leaving a Czech doctor’s office.

“The major difference between doctors in the US and UK and here in the Czech Republic is the way the doctors approach the patient. In those countries, they explain options and let patients decide what they want to do. Here the doctor knows best and tells you what to do often without explaining. In many cases, it’s like ‘here you are, here is the referral or prescription, move along to the next doctor.’ There’s no money to be made by explaining it to you.”

Open for just two months in the new TELEHOUSE building in Prague’s Dejvice district, MY CLINIC takes a more comprehensive approach to the patient while giving doctors the space to do their job.

“Our philosophy is based on devoting more time to the individual patient. We want to give doctors more time to concentrate, to use their knowledge and experience to give patients the level of comfort and empathy they're used to getting from top healthcare facilities from abroad.”

MY CLINIC looks for doctors with the experience and language abilities to deliver such a service. They recruit medical professionals with certificates of excellence from embassies but also reach out to doctors who may be disheartened by the Czech system and want to work in a facility that offers a higher level of service and care.

“I think people come to the Czech Republic and they experience other services like banking, telecommunications, or entertainment on the European level. But then you come to a state hospital and it looks like it's falling apart. There’s a legacy of underinvestment. We want to provide the level of service and modern facilities people are used to from other countries,” said Šimonek.

Šimonek hopes the clinic will also lessen some of the confusion foreigners can feel when being treated in the Czech Republic.

“It’s not easy for the typical patient to know what he or she is entitled to. The system is not really clear and generally, foreigners are not able to find out because there is really no one single point of contact. There is also a language barrier and most doctors are at an advanced age and don't speak English.”

As a subscription-based service (the clinic accepts self-payers, foreign health insurance, and some Czech health insurance companies) MY CLINIC does all the management for its patients to allow for greater ease in setting appointments, paying for care, and dealing with paperwork. It also wants to lessen the ultimate fear associated with a visit to the Czech doctor’s office: the waiting room.

“This is such a common issue for people because they just feel completely on display,” said Šimonek adding that because MY CLINIC schedules appointments there are no long waits or crowds and contact with other clients is limited in its comfortable waiting area.

The medical center's common areas were also designed with social distancing in mind. The coronavirus pandemic hit halfway through the construction of the new clinic leading to the implementation of building changes to ensure spacing and privacy between patients in the waiting room and technologies such as thermal cameras that can immediately detect symptoms at the entryway.

Šimonek said that Covid will have a far-reaching impact on how people, Czechs and foreigners alike, prefer to receive medical care in the future -- he also believes they’ll be willing to spend money to get it.

“Covid has made everyone aware of the value of their health. Private facilities that can guarantee service, modern equipment, and the highest standards of professionalism will become very popular,” he predicts. 

As for the Covid-era rise of telemedicine and diagnostics at a distance, Šimonek remains a firm believer in the healing power of touch.

“Personal contact with a human touch is something we advocate. People need to be physically in contact, the doctors need to be able to physically examine you and reassure you.”

During the first stage of the clinic's operation, MY CLINIC is offering medical care in fifteen areas of specialization, however, it will soon open a pediatrics unit providing physiotherapy and dermatology as well as offering services like ENT for children in a single facility.

A future partnership with Podolí maternity hospital will see MY CLINIC doctors offering prenatal care and assistance with birth.

Šimonek believes developing relationships with patients and families is a basic attribute of world-class healthcare. “We do not just treat patients,” he said. “We help people.”

13 things to know before going to Prague, Czech Republic

Prague  is a city that knows how to surprise. 

Wander its beautiful medieval core, and you’ll soon be bumping into both fairy-tale vistas and provocative street art. At night , small, dimly lit doorways can lead to vast convivial beer halls, whereas riotous music clubs hide behind grand art deco facades. Whatever brings you to the eclectic Czech capital, though, it’s best not to be thrown completely off guard.

Come prepared with these insider tips and make the most of a trip to Prague.

1. You might not want to stay in Wenceslas Square

With its abundance of soaring spires and must-see attractions, Staré Město (Old Town) is a good-looking and convenient base – but don’t overlook Prague’s other neighborhoods . The center is compact, and the neighboring districts of Malá Strana and Nové Město are also handy for the sights and have their own gauntlet of pubs, bars and clubs. Just be aware that Wenceslas Square transforms from a respectable shopping destination into party central after dark, and its glut of strip joints can attract roaming stag parties. 

For those keen to see where locals kick back or those traveling with children , head to the outlying districts. Both cosmopolitan Vinohrady and hip Holešovice have good-value stays, fun nightlife and top-notch transport links. 

2. Pack comfy shoes and layers

Central Prague’s timeworn streets and alleyways are best explored on foot . Pack comfortable shoes that are cobblestone ready; high heels can lead to unfortunate pratfalls.

Besides dressing for upscale restaurants or a night at the theater, Czechs are a casual lot. Comfy layers – which can be peeled back in a subterranean pub and then restored during a blustery walk home – will help you blend in. Whatever the season , never discount the chance of a rain shower, so bring some kind of waterproof too.

3. The metro doesn't go all the way to the airport

Prague has an excellent affordable public transport system . Its main pitfall is that the metro doesn’t quite stretch to the airport. The cheapest route to Prague’s Old Town is to catch the often busy 119 bus to Nádraží Veleslavín station and then change to metro Line A. Tickets can be bought either in the visitor center or from machines in the terminals, which mostly accept contactless debit/credit card payments. If you’re staying close to Prague’s central train station, consider taking the slightly more expensive but direct Airport Express bus .

4. Pre-book your airport taxi for the best price

Opportunistic taxi drivers can be a problem. If you want to avoid hulking suitcases on and off buses, it’s best to arrange a transfer in advance rather than stepping into a cab outside the airport (or the main train station, for that matter). At the very least, ask about the price before you set off, and let the driver know you’ll want a receipt. Uber , Bolt  and local company Liftago are popular ride-hailing apps.

5. Validate your public transport ticket

Public transport tickets lasting from 30 minutes to three days can be bought at most newspaper stands, corner shops, and in all metro stations. Trams also have orange contactless debit/credit ticket machines onboard. Alternatively, you can use the PID Lítačka app . Just make sure to validate your ticket when starting your journey. This involves popping it into the yellow machine inside buses and trams or at the top of the metro escalators (or clicking the button on the app); forgetting can leave you with a hefty fine.

6. Prague is good value, but not quite as cheap as it once was

Although prices have increased in recent years, Prague is still a good destination for budget-conscious travelers compared to many European capitals. The currency you’ll be spending is known as both Czech koruna and Czech crown. Beer remains refreshingly cheap, and a 500ml tanker will only set you back about 55Kč. A cappuccino is approximately 70Kč, and a decent traditional Czech meal costs around 200Kč. It’s usual to tip around 10% for table service.

Buying the Prague City Pass or Prague CoolPass means free and discounted admission to some key attractions and sightseeing tours, although you’ll need to work hard to make either worth the investment. If you’re on a budget, paying for a few key attractions and making the most of Prague’s free diversions makes more sense.

7. Don't expect much small talk

If you come from a culture where having a chat about the weather is the obligatory warm-up to every interaction, you may find the Czech approach more, well… abrupt. Czechs (like everyone) can be very warm and funny, but being reserved with strangers is common. Be polite, but it’s fine to get straight to the point.

8. English is widely spoken, but a little Czech is welcome

It’s common for people who live or work in Prague’s tourist hot spots to speak English. Menus and museum information boards will usually be translated into English, too. For the odd occasion where you’re struggling to be understood, it’s worth having the Google Translate app ready on your phone.

Despite the ubiquity of English in central Prague, some basic Czech is appreciated. Greet people by saying, " Dobrý den"  (good day) or "Dobrý večer" (good evening). The more informal "Ahoj!" (hi/bye!) is best saved for close friends and relatives.

9. Try traditional Czech baked goods

Chimney-shaped cakes called trdelník are hawked at stalls by most tourist attractions, and they’re an Instagram favorite. The thing is: they aren’t Czech, but rather Slovakian or possibly Hungarian. So, sure, devour one of these sugar-encrusted towers (they’re delicious), but it’s also worth scouring local bakeries for some more traditional Czech treats. Keep a hungry eye out for kolaches – palm-sized, sweet-bread disks filled with poppy seeds or fruit jam.

10. Be wary of exchange rates that look too good to be true

Some unscrupulous currency exchanges promise brilliant deals and then charge hidden fees. When changing money, ask for the final amount in writing before handing over your cash, and make sure you get a receipt. If you believe you’ve been given a bad deal and have changed less than €1000, you have three hours to cancel the transaction. A more scam-proof alternative is to have a bank account that offers reasonable rates and low fees for international withdrawals and use an ATM (cashpoint).

11. There are ways to sidestep the crowds

Prague can get hectic, especially in the late spring and summer. To escape the hubbub, venture beyond the tourist triad of Charles Bridge , Old Town Square , and Prague Castle . For example, instead of jostling through selfie sticks, admire Charles Bridge from the river islands of Kampa or Střelecký ostrov. Also, consider swapping the carnival atmosphere of Golden Lane for a romantic stroll around the tranquil castle district of Nový Svět . And if it all gets too much, bag yourself a shady spot in one of Prague’s handsome parks (some come with beer gardens and sweeping city views) – or consider a day trip from the city.

12. Take standard safety precautions and use common sense

Prague is generally a safe city: violent crime rates are low, traffic rules are followed, and the tap water is clean. Take the same precautions you would in your home country and be especially vigilant about your belongings: pickpockets have been known to target crowded tourist areas, trains, and trams. Should you need emergency help, calling 112 guarantees an English-speaking operator.

13. Get travel insurance 

The Czech Republic has high-quality health care. If you need a Schengen visa for entry, having medical insurance is mandatory. Visitors from the EU can get free emergency treatment in Prague by showing their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or, for travelers from the UK, the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). It’s still advisable to take out travel insurance, as the cards do not cover all costs, such as medical repatriation.

Before you travel to Prague, it is a good idea to download and print a map of Prague. Prague Airport Transfers offers a map of Prague city centre as a free download . You can also obtain this map with a pocket guide from your driver if you book an airport transfer from the airport. This Prague map shows you some of the main areas of interest, such as Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, Wenceslas Square and Prague Castle. This map also includes a map of the Prague Public Transport system, which will get you anywhere in the city you want to go. It is a very up-to-date and easy-to-use map, but if you need a larger-scale map with Prague suburbs, you can download a free map from Czech Tourism. Their map is considerably larger and is devoted to sport and relaxation activities.

For those who do not need extra planning in advance, you might be just fine getting simple maps from hotel reception desks or tourist information centres. The quality of those maps might vary and will sometimes include quite significant amounts of advertising rather than useful information you are looking for. But they are free, which is good.

Lastly, there are some good maps for sale or included in guidebooks, but they are not really necessary for short-term visitors. Most visitors do not venture outside the city centre areas, and free maps will do just the same job as paid maps.
