Listen to Tom Cruise Sing Def Leppard Classic ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’

" Step inside, walk this way. You and me babe, Hey, hey !" For many rock fans, Def Leppard ’s classic hit ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ instantly transports them to a place in time where the hair was big, the jeans were ripped, and Aqua Net was a prerequisite to any night out, regardless of your gender.

Decades later, the tune is being reinvented for the film adaptation of the successful Broadway musical ‘Rock of Ages.’ The film, with an all star cast including Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta Jones, tells the story of a “small town girl” who meets her “city boy” on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their dreams.

The sticky sweet rendition of the song is served up courtesy of 'Jerry Maguire' himself – Tom Cruise, and is likely to raise a few eyebrows from the purists out there. Even though Joe Elliott and Def Leppard refute that they were ever really a hair band, it’s hard to imagine the genre without their generous contributions and they will always go down in history as one of the best at crafting addictive, over-the-top rock choruses.

While it’s commendable that Cruise opted to sing the vocals as the role of Stacee Jaxx, lead singer of the faux rock band Arsenal, he’s probably going to take a little heat for this one. He may look the part with his fake tattoos and hair extensions but the actual vocals are a bit too Broadway and sound more like he's singing a show tune than a rock anthem. Realizing that the root of ‘Rock of Ages’ is Broadway makes the line a little blurred but if you’re firmly planted on the rock side of things, this song is going to sound more like an elevator soundtrack than a rock classic usually delivered with imperfections and reckless abandon.

On the plus side of things, one of the charms of Def Leppard’s ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ was never knowing quite exactly what Joe Elliott was crooning through the chorus, allowing the listen to easily make up their own lyrics and sing along. With Cruise’s slick delivery and polished production, the lyrics are crystal clear which will likely leave a few of you saying, “Oh so those are the words?” as you follow along with the bouncing ball some twenty years later.

Take a listen to the song below and let us know what you think.

Tom Cruise, ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ (From ‘Rock of Ages’) – Song Review

The idea of turning an '80s anthem like Def Leppard 's 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' into a show tune isn't going to sit well with many formerly Aquanetted, double-socked, Jordache-jean wearing rock fans.

Tom Cruise is challenged with turning Joe Elliott's vocal performance into something unique and memorable. He gives up early, opting for a karaoke performance that's too good to laugh at, but not quite good enough to want more.

'Rock of Ages' is a musical, so some amount of Broadway production is expected. The " Hey, huh 's" that fall just beneath the opening guitar riff are certainly forgivable. In fact, more cheese would be a good thing. An extra set of jazz hands would really tick some people off, but for others with a better sense of humor it'd make this song a kitschy standout.

With Cruise on the stick, one finds himself focusing too much on the lyrics. Raise your hand if you've listened to the original 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' a million times but never paid attention to the pre-chorus. " Take a bottle / Shake it up / Break the bubble / Break it up ." No, the original 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' swept one away in a wash of emotional excess.

When you begin paying attention to the details, a 25-year-old song begins to show a few bald spots. The same effect is repeated in the bridge. " You got the peaches, I got the cream / Sweet to taste, saccharine ." Really? That's what he says? Is there a more unrockstarlike word than "saccharine?"

For the most part Cruise's vocals remain buried beneath the production. While the guitar work is simplified, and the rhythm section not nearly as explosive, the production is a highlight of this remake. The bright backing vocals add texture to an otherwise flat performance.

This version of 'Sugar' is like what 'The New Class' was to 'Saved By the Bell.' It brings a classic to a new audience, but it fails to separate itself from the original in any remarkable way. Instead of risking one audience to please another, the arrangement shoots to please both. At best it leaves one shrugging his shoulders in ambivalence.

Def Leppard and Journey Launch 2024 Tour: Set Lists and Video

Rock of Ages first listen: Can Tom Cruise actually sing?

Critics get a taste of the actor's take on Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" in the upcoming rock musical — and they aren't so sweet on it

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Tom Cruise certainly pulls off the look of the '80s rockers he's fashioned after, but his vocals aren't as on point.

The audio: Tom Cruise is, apparently, "hot sticky sweet." But can he sing? Ever since the Mission: Impossible star was cast in the upcoming musical Rock of Ages , based on the jukebox Broadway show of the same name, critics wondered whether he had the vocal chops to pull off the role. In the film, out June 15, Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx, a bare-chested, chaps-wearing rocker in the mold of Poison's Bret Michaels, who is tasked with belting out rock and roll classics like "Paradise City" and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The first audio clip of the actor singing the Def Leppard track "Pour Some Sugar On Me" was released Tuesday. (Listen to it below.) Cruise claims that the hair band already gave his performance its stamp of approval .

The reaction: Cruise may look the part of the long-haired, tatted-up rocker in the preview images we've seen, says Mary Ouellette at Loudwire , but his vocals are too Broadway. He lacks Def Leppard's "imperfections and reckless abandon," and sounds "more like he's singing a showtune than a rock anthem." What vocals? says Billy Dukes at Ultimate Classic Rock . He's drowned out by the ramped-up background production. While Cruise's version will bring the classic track to a new audience, "it fails to separate itself form the original in any remarkable way." He sounds fine, says Katey Rich at Cinema Blend . Cruise "always seemed like one of those people who can do just about everything well." The true test, though, will be whether he can pull off those crazy '80s dance moves. Listen to Cruise's "Sugar" rendition:

TOM CRUISE On Meeting DEF LEPPARD: 'It Was Important They Knew I Was Honoring Their Music'

The soundtrack to the upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical "Rock Of Ages" , which showcases popular rock songs from the '70s and '80s, features the cast — Tom Cruise , Catherine Zeta-Jones , Russell Brand and Julianne Hough — singing some of the greatest hits of the "hair-band" era.

Due to be released June 5 — ten days before the film hits theatres — "Rock Of Ages: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" includes Cruise 's renditions of DEF LEPPARD 's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and GUNS N' ROSES ' "Paradise City" .

In a brand new interview with Playboy.com , Cruise stated about his first attempt at singing, "I knew I could hold a note. I sang in a glee club when I was 14 years old and in a high school musical. But I never had a singing lesson. No one ever taught me how to use my voice.

It was previously reported that Cruise was preparing for his role by training with Axl Rose 's vocal coach. "He was an opera singer who taught me how to control my voice," Cruise said. "It's like learning a new sport or a skill for a character. I had to find out how to move air through the vocal cords and where to place it in my head, in the chest. It's something you have to do every day to strengthen your voice."

The first song Cruise sang in front of a crowd was "Pour Some Sugar On Me" , with members of DEF LEPPARD watching him.

"I was down in Miami, recording different songs, and Adam [ Shankman , director] called and said, ' DEF LEPPARD 's coming by the set,'" Cruise told Playboy.com . "I said, 'Man, that's cool.' Then I paused. 'Wait, I'm rehearsing their song tomorrow.' And he's like, 'Yeah!' [laughs] So we started right in the deep end, and that was the first scene I shot in the movie. It's a great song, and I grew up listening to them. They went to the back of the Bourbon Room, and I looked at my band and was like, 'Hit it.' All the crew was watching them watching me. . . [After the song was done] the lead singer, Joe Elliott , points at me and goes, 'Fuck you! Fuck you!' Then I saw big smiles on their faces, and I realized I'd gotten their stamp. It was a very cool moment. It was important they knew I was honoring their music and not making fun of them."

DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen recently told VH1 Classic Rock Nights that Cruise "was a super-lovely guy" when they met. Collen added, "I was so impressed because he hadn't sung before and he had vocal lessons. He was literally doing five hours a day, five days a week, like truly real, getting in there and doing it. And we saw him and he was amazing, it was like Iggy Pop meets someone else and he's in great shape and it was like, 'What!?!' It was surreal, but he really pulls it off and it was like he's a total rock star."

An audio sample of Cruise singing the DEF LEPPARD classic "Pour Some Sugar On Me" can be streamed below (courtesy of RyanSeacrest.com ).

Tom Cruise stars in "Rock Of Ages" as Stacee Jaxx , an aging musician whose glory days are long past.

"Rock Of Ages: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" features the following track listing:

01. Paradise City (Tom Cruise) 02. Sister Christian / Just Like Paradise/Nothin' But a Good Time (Diego Boneta) 03. Juke Box Hero / I Love Rock 'N' Roll (Diego Boneta) 04. Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Catherine Zeta-Jones) 05. Waiting For A Girl Like You Diego Boneta 06. More Than Words / Heaven (Diego Boneta) 07. Wanted Dead Or Alive (Julianne Hough) 08. I Want To Know What Love Is (Malin Akerman) 09. I Wanna Rock (Diego Boneta) 10. Pour Some Sugar On Me (Tom Cruise) 11. Harden My Heart (Julianne Hough) 12. Shadows Of The Night / Harden My Heart (Julianne Hough) 13. Here I Go Again (Diego Boneta) 14. Can't Fight This Feeling (Russell Brand) 15. Any Way You Want It (Julianne Hough) 16. Undercover Love (Diego Boneta) 17. Every Rose Has Its Thorn (Diego Boneta) 18. Rock You Like A Hurricane (Julianne Hough) 19. We Built This City / We're Not Gonna Take It (Russell Brand) 20. Don't Stop Believin' (Diego Boneta)

Adam Anders , executive music producer for the film and album, recently told The Hollywood Reporter about Cruise 's vocal skills, "He had never sung in his life. He was like, 'I need to know that I can do this before I sign on.' So I went to his house to hear him sing and even though he was completely green as a singer, his vocal cords were amazing. He had this voice that blew me away. It was the most powerful voice I had ever heard. So loud. He could do anything and go as high as we wanted. It was like a kid discovering he had a new toy. I left there super-pumped knowing that not only could we make him pass as a singer in the movie, but we would blow people away with what he could do."

He added, "[ Tom 's] confidence kept growing as we worked together. I think he started off a little nervous, as anybody would who has never done this, but he just bought it 110%. He works harder than anybody I've ever met in my life. By the end of this movie, the guy was just phenomenal. I remember telling him, 'You're a singer!'"

"Rock Of Ages" also stars Alec Baldwin , Russell Brand , Catherine Zeta-Jones , Paul Giamatti , Malin Akerman and many others. It scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 15.

Listen to Tom Cruise Sing “Pour Some Sugar on Me”

In the upcoming musical film ' Rock of Ages ,' Tom Cruise plays an aging rock star and the actor actually sings his songs in the film...and now you can hear his cover of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me."

Let's see... Long hair? Check. Sleazy, suggestive tattoos? Check. Tight pants, no shirt? Got it. Eyeliner? Enough to make you question your own commitment to eye definition. Yes, Tom Cruise definitely looks the part, but does he sound like a rock star?

Vulture picked up this little nugget of gold from Tom Cruise's recent interview in Playboy, about performing a cover of a Def Leppard song for the band themselves:

"We started right in the deep end, and that was the first scene I shot in the movie. [Def Leppard] went to the back of the Bourbon Room, and I looked at my band and was like, 'Hit it.' All the crew was watching them watching me. The lead singer, Joe Elliott, points at me and goes, 'F--- you! F--- you!' Then I saw big smiles on their faces, and I realized I’d gotten their stamp."

Rest easy, guys. Tom Cruise has gotten a stamp of approval from an aging hair-metal band. But more importantly, Tom Cruise saying, "and I looked at my band" may be the funniest thing he's ever said. Who knew he was such a comedian?

And now you too can listen to Cruise's entire cover of "Pour Some Sugar on Me" below. It's... something . (If you need to cleanse yourself, you can listen to the original here .)

'Rock of Ages': Def Leppard likes Tom Cruise's cover of 'Pour Some Sugar on Me'

  • Published: Jun. 14, 2012, 6:34 p.m.
  • The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Def Leppard has no shame.

When it comes to riding the fur-covered, animal print-lined coattails of "Rock of Ages," the big-screen musical opening Friday about love and hair bands in the 1980s, the group isn't shying away from commandeering some of the film's spotlight to remind everyone they're still around, and they're still rockin'. "Rock of Ages" was, after all, the title of a Def Leppard hit long before it was a Broadway musical.

The British band — lead singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, drummer Rick Allen and guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell — re-recorded two of their songs that appear in the film, and they're teaming up with Poison and Lita Ford for a summer tour kicking off June 20 in Salt Lake City.

"The movie helps a lot without the momentum of something like a new album," said Elliott during a break from rehearsing for the tour, which they're not-so-subtly calling the "Rock of Ages" tour.

In the movie, Syracuse native Tom Cruise's out-there rocker Stacee Jaxx performs a splashy version of Def Leppard's 1987 "Pour Some Sugar on Me." The band was unavailable to film a cameo alongside the likes of Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson, who appear in the movie, but Elliott and Savage are fully supportive of the homage to the 1980s rock scene and believe it will lure new fans to their shows.

AP: You weren't associated with the "Rock of Ages" stage show but you are with the film. Why's that?

Joe Elliott: You could say with hindsight that we didn't make a wrong decision, we just made a decision. We revisited that decision when they threw out the idea of the film to us because they mentioned people like Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones and the director who did "Hairspray."

AP: Did you ever in a million years think Tom Cruise would be singing one of your songs in a musical?

Rick Savage: It's not one of those things you think about, really.

Joe Elliott: Could you imagine if it was though? You get in the shower one day and go, "I wonder if Tom Cruise will ever sing 'Pour Some Sugar on Me?'"

Rick Savage: We were fortune enough to check his filming out of that particular performance because we were both in Florida at the same time. We were about half an hour's drive away. We just had to get there as he was shooting some of the scenes. That was special in itself, just getting to meet the man.

Joe Elliott: It was pretty surreal, actually. We just walked into this little seedy club in Ft. Lauderdale, and there up on stage is Stacee Jaxx doing "Sugar." It's like, "What is this?" It's nuts.

AP: What did you think of his interpretation of the song?

Rick Savage: His voice was good.

Joe Elliott: Yeah, we were talking to him between takes, and he was a little put out that we were there at first, you know, "Uh oh. The queen's in town!" He said, "What do you think?" I said, "Can you sing?" He said, "No, I started like four or five months ago, just a couple of hours a day." He had other movies he was shooting, so it was like a part-time thing. I'm thinking, "Wow. If he's got that good in four or five months, that's much better than half the people on some of these talent shows."

AP: Why did you decide to release re-recorded versions of "Rock of Ages" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" this summer?

Joe Elliott: Our work is not available on any digital domain, except for the last album, the "Mirrorball" album, because it's a catalog issue with the record label, so we just wanted studio versions of those songs available for this summer because of the film coming out.

AP: What was it like re-recording those classics?

Joe Elliott: We had to be really careful that we actually studied them, literally like forgeries. It's like Donald Pleasence in "The Great Escape" doing passports. It's got to be exactly the same to fool the old German guard. That's the same thing with these songs. We wanted them to have the same energy, that youthful exuberance we had in '83 and '87, so people that are sympathetic to our cause listen to them and say, "Wow, they've still got it. They can perform the songs the way they did back then."

Def Leppard's 2012 Rock of Ages Tour with Lita Ford and Poison includes two upstate New York concerts this summer. The band will perform at Darien Lake on Friday, August 17 and Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on Monday, August 20. Lita Ford and Poison open both shows.

"Rock of Ages," the big screen adaptation of the hit musical, opens in theaters this Friday with Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige and Paul Giamatti.

Def Leppard Review Tom Cruise's Performance In "Rock Of Ages"

FUSE TV - Def Leppard Review Tom Cruise's Performance In "Rock Of Ages"

Fuse recently sat down with hard rock legends Def Leppard to talk about their experience with the movie adaptation of the Broadway smash Rock of Ages , an in-theaters-now flick that prominently features Tom Cruise singing "Pour Some Sugar On Me." According to the Sheffield, England rockers, they just happened to drop by the movie set at the exact time Cruise was performing their 1987 hit for the film.

"We walk in and Tom Cruise is tatted up with long hair—in character—and he starts singing 'Pour Some Sugar On Me.' The coincidence was beyond belief," Joe Elliott tells us. "Obviously being a film, they shoot multiple takes from different angles. We were in the pit for an hour or 90 minutes watching him do it maybe six, seven times. Between takes he would jump down and we would interact and talk. He'd be like, 'Am I doing it right? Are you okay with this?' And I'm like, 'Dude, more than okay.' This is the guy from Mission: Impossible !"

Although Elliott says Cruise nailed the vocals, he doesn't think the megastar looked to Def Leppard for stage presence inspiration. "He'd obviously been studying videos from, I'd say, Axl and Iggy. Maybe Scott Weiland. He had that lizard snake walk thing going on, which is not my cup of tea."

Those only familiar with the film version of Rock of Ages might be surprised to learn that Def Leppard resisted giving their songs to the musical for years. Elliott explains why they eventually caved.

"About eight years ago the producers came to us and said, 'We want to use some of your songs' and they gave us the premise of what [ Rock of Ages ] was all about. We said, 'Oh no! Don't think so.' But lo and behold, this particular stage play went through the roof," Elliott says. "It got to the point where David Coverdale [Whitesnake's frontman] did a narration at the beginning of the play and they mention, 'A big-boo hiss to Def Leppard for not giving us their songs.' Which is very comical, vaudeville, almost English humor, which we actually thought was very funny.

"So cut to last year: They approached us again saying, 'We're turning this into a movie now, and oh, by the way, we're looking at Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, etc. Will you rethink your decision? So we discussed it and said, 'Alright, go on then.'"

For Leppard's full take on the Rock of Ages film, watch the video above. And to hear the rockers' crazy tour stories—including the tale of a Polish witch with a white rat in her hand casting a hex on the band—check out the video below. Also in the clip at the bottom: Elliott talks about his fan moment in 1983 when he caught Queen's guitarist riffing on "Photograph" while warming up. "I was thinking, Christ, 10 years ago I was in school buying Sheer Heart Attack , and now he's up on stage playing one of our riffs," Elliott fondly recalls. "It was like god, this is amazing."

10 Movies To Watch if You Love Quentin Tarantino

'jurassic world 4' roars to life with first images, the 10 best sci-fi b-movies, ranked.

You’d be forgiven for forgetting that there’s a Tom Cruise rock musical coming this summer in between all the superhero fare.  While we’ve only gotten brief glimpses of the musical numbers from Rock of Ages in the film’s trailers, a full music video for the stars’ rendition of Journey’s “Any Way You Want It” has gone online.  I actually think the idea for Rock of Ages is solid, but I absolutely cannot stand the production on these songs.  Director Adam Shankman recruited Glee ’s music producer Adam Anders to produce the songs for Rock of Ages , and all the choruses sound way, way, way overproduced.  “Any Way You Want It” doesn’t sound terrible thanks to Mary J. Blige , but any time the chorus comes in I’m immediately taken out of the number.

In addition to the music video, an audio sample of Cruise singing “Pour Some Sugar On Me” has also landed online.  Again, it’s overproduced, but Cruise doesn’t sound terrible on his own.  Hit the jump to take a listen to the songs.  Rock of Ages opens on June 15th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Rock of Ages :

“Rock of Ages” tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.

Here’s Cruise singing “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, followed by the “Any Way You Want It” video.
