On the fly in Tasmania

Winter winners

With the new season nearly upon us, it’s a good time to remember that even in the winter months there are still some good locations to go to and some good fish to catch.

tasmania fishing trips

Some of our private fisheries put on an outstanding show for the angler. Phil caught four beautiful rainbows recently (and lost a couple more) even though the temperature was down a little and the odd shower came across.

tasmania fishing trips

He had a great day and so did I … I accidentally got in on the action, showing Phil a ‘Steeple’ cast, I presented the fly and as I went to hand over the rod, I was on …  another nice rainbow to the net.  It’s one of the hazards of guiding when you demonstrate something in the water with the trout about.

Workshops are back

tasmania fishing trips

Following on from recent seasons Red Tag Trout Tours, in conjunction with Shannon and Ken Orr from Orrsome Trout Tours, will once again be running a series of Beginner/Novice Fly Fishing Workshops throughout the 2024/2025 Season.

These will again be held at Herne Lodge in the Central Highlands which is a private lake with a beautiful little cabin on the lake’s edge. The lake is full of wild brown trout and generally a day’s fishing there reaps some great rewards. All gear is supplied from rods, reels, waders, flies as well as a BBQ lunch and beverages for the day.

At just $325.00 per person for the day this is great value. So if you are interested, or you know of anyone who may be, please book your spot to make sure you are locked in. Please note on the attached Brochure that there will be one Workshop per month and there are a couple of Sundays in this mix.

As usual there will be lucky door prizes for each Workshop with a grand prize at the end of the season for one lucky angler. Prizes are supplied by our great Sponsors: Hurley’s Fly Fishing, Spot On Fishing Connection, Williams Outdoors, E J Todd, TFO and TONIC Sunglasses.

Hope to see you there.

Prizewinning fishing …

tasmania fishing trips

Recently I had the pleasure of guiding two lucky US anglers who won a prize in one of their Association Auctions for a day’s guiding on our Midlands Rivers.

tasmania fishing trips

Justin and Joshua are members of Trout Unlimited and were finally able to get to Tasmania this March to take up their prize.

Although the weather was again quite nice and things looked good to begin with, the fishing was very sparse.

tasmania fishing trips

Still, both guys loved the countryside and the experience and many a big tale was told that night over dinner.

It was a pleasure to be part of the prize list for Trout Unlimited and Red Tag looks forward to possible future involvement.

Tight fishing

tasmania fishing trips

Another couple from the US is out to enjoy our wild brown trout adventures.

Jim & Kim had a lovely time in Tasmania and although the fishing was at times a bit tight, they did manage to snag a few nice wild browns on their trip.

Elusive wild browns …

tasmania fishing trips

Neil and Katie wanted to try out some river and stream fishing in our Midlands and picked a beautiful couple of days weather-wise, unfortunately, our wild browns were hard to come by.

Still, the experience was well worth the venture.

Busy season

tasmania fishing trips

February and March are certainly busy periods for Red Tag and this season has been no exception.

Several anglers from the US have made the journey to Tasmania and taken time to fish for our beautiful brown trout.

tasmania fishing trips

Jim and Shellie from Colorado spent three days searching on our waterways with some mixed results however they thoroughly loved the scenery and the places they fished.

tasmania fishing trips

The sunny and hot conditions kept a lot of fish down deep but as Jim said, “The experience was well worth it.” I hope to see you both again one day.

Returning for more

tasmania fishing trips

Peter and Elizabeth have been long time clients with Red Tag over the years and 2024 saw them back to do what they love doing … fly fishing.

tasmania fishing trips

Over three days they had varying waters from private lakes to running streams and although the weather made the first day a bit hard they did nonetheless pick up a few but it was the last couple of days when things came together very nicely.

tasmania fishing trips

From a nice trout with a Cormorant strike in its side, to a snake dozing on the path, to eagles soaring above … it’s a tough life but someone has to do it.

tasmania fishing trips

Peter and Elizabeth love their dry fly fishing and the final day saw four beauties caught, easily that many lost and fish appearing everywhere.

tasmania fishing trips

Just fishing the margins with some intelligent casting saw the results begin.

tasmania fishing trips

Another great trip and no doubt they will be back for more.

The best places to fly fish for trout in Tasmania (2024)

Learn more about the best fly fishing spots in tasmania and experience catching brown and rainbow trout in one of the most pristine fishing destinations in the world., what's the best thing about trout fly fishing in tasmania in 2024.

When it comes to fly fishing locations around the world, it's not hard to see why Tasmania is a popular destination with anglers visiting the state.

Trout fishing in Tasmania presents anglers with an abundance of settings - from endless lakes to flowing rivers and streams, all of which present plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in picturesque locations and stunning backdrops that make for a unique fly fishing experience.

Many of the top trout fishing spots are easily accessible from the capital city of Hobart or only a short drive if you're flying into other main destination points such as Launceston or Devonport.

While a lot of Tasmania's trout fishing is lake based, a key feature of fishing in the state is the diversity of fly fishing locations and options within close reach each location.

The Tasmanian trout fishing season , as well as weather, are two important considerations when choosing where to fish - not to mention the type of fly fishing you're seeking such as sight fishing in clear streams or searching for large brown and rainbow trout in expansive lakes; either way, Tasmania has it all.

Whether you’re a beginner to fly fishing or an experienced angler visiting Tasmania for a trout fishing experience, it can be difficult to know how or where to begin.

In this post, we provide an overview of the best places to fly fish in Tasmania as well map locations to help you find your way and as some quick tips on how to prepare for your fishing trip to the state...

The best trout fishing locations in Tasmania

#1 great lake / yingina (central highlands).

Great Lake / yingina is one of Tasmania's most well known and popular fly fishing destinations.

This is with good reason as it isone of Australia's largest natural freshwater lakes and with its location close to Miena - the popular accommodation base to fish the entire Tasmania's Central Highlands region.

Early in the Tasmanian trout fishing season provides excellent for wet fly fishing and blind casting at Great Lake, with woolly buggers and small fur flies popular choices.

Other highlights include midge fishing when mornings are warmer and calm and the infamous 'shark fishing' to trout rising in wind lanes; all providing good chances of catching well sized wild brown trout as well as rainbow trout.

#2 Penstock Lagoon (Central Highlands)

Another well known fly fishing spot in the Central Highlands area is Penstock Lagoon.

A key feature of Penstock is its easy access and consistent fishing for trout, offering a diverse range of entry points to the water from around most of the lagoon.

The shallow and weedy fly fishing conditions offer a range of habitat for trout, where early in the trout fishing season water levels are higher and trout fishing with wet flies from both boat or shore are productive. As the weather warms, the lagoon sees prolific hatches of mayfly, providing some of the most exciting dry fly fishing in Tasmania .

Penstock Lagoon is also reserved as a fly fishing only lake, making it one of the most consistent and best fly fishing locations in Tasmania.

View Google Maps Location:   Penstock Lagoon

#3 Little Pine Lagoon (Central Highlands)

Much like Penstock, Little Pine Lagoon is a fantastic fly fishing only option in the Central Highlands.

Providing consistent wet and dry fly fishing opportunities - Little Pine also has easy access and sustains a large population of wild brown trout; with fish of all sizes.

Little Pine is a well known area to find tailing fish early in the Tasmanian fishing season , while also providing prolific mayfly hatches during the warmer months which is a highlight.

Loch style fly fishing is popular here, with a variety of fly patterns to suit what conditions the day presents. Wet fly fishing is productive through out the season with dry fly fishing more successful after November.

#4 The Tyenna River (Hobart)

Located close to the capital of Tasmania in Hobart, the Tyenna River offers some of the best river trout fishing in Tasmania surrounded by impressive backdrops.

Located approximately one hour from Hobart, the entire valley contains rolling green farmland as well as tall forested areas - with fly fishing conditions particularly good during late summer and autumn as water levels get lower.

Nymphing is extremely effective when water levels are high, whilst dry fly fishing can prove successful during the warmer months as water levels drop and fish rise more willingly. If you're after a fishing day trip from Hobart , the Tyenna River is a popular stop for your travels.

View Google Maps Location:   Tyenna River

#5 Meander River (Northern Tasmania)

Located in the north of Tasmania, the Meander River is a smaller river surrounded by lush vegetation, picturesque state forest and farm land.

For those based in the Central Highlands regions, such as Miena, travel to the Meander River usually only takes around an hour and provides a nice change from the bigger lakes in central Tasmania.

The river is usually broken up into areas above and below the dam at Lake Huntsman, with sections above usually fast and clear while areas below show predominantly longer and shallower runs which is slightly more appealing from a fly fishing perspective.

The Meander River is known for producing excellent fishing throughout the season, with regular hatches of mayfly, damselfly, caddis and grasshoppers. With a good population of both brown trout and rainbow trout, finding fish willing to take dry flies and nymphs will provide good numbers of fish.

Fly fishing on the Meander River can provide some challenging conditions given the fast-flowing nature and surrounding boulders and rocks which can make for some tricky casting and wading, however the fishing is well worth it with plenty of good sized trout residing in the river.

If you're planning to fly fish on the Meander River, it's a good idea to book a guide to learn about the best fishing spots and techniques as with the right knowledge and equipment, you can have a successful and enjoyable fishing trip.

Extra spot: Wood's Lake (Central Highlands)

Trout Tales owner Matt also wanted to give a mention to Woods Lake, another popular fishing location in the Central Highlands of Tasmania .

"To be honest, my favourite location for fishing in Tasmania is actually wherever the fly fishing is best at the time," Matt said, "however the drive down into Woods Lake is pretty spectacular."

Woods Lake is located south of Arthurs Lake and one of it's primary features is that it accommodates all style of trout fishing.

There's a few fishing spots around the lake which make for more sheltered trout fishing while you take in the sights and sounds of one of Tasmania's more picturesque fly fishing areas.

2024 – 2025 Season Notes:

Honesty is our favorite policy and it would be fair to say (at this stage) that the coming season looks likely to be our most challenging so far. During the last half of last season (2023 – 2024), Tasmania was inundated with a predator bird known as the Great Cormorant . This is a cyclical event occurring approximately every 7 years, however this most recent one seems to be the worst I have observed. I would estimate that several million trout were consumed in Tasmania by these birds in the last 9 months. Trout that are easy to catch will likely be uncommon this season but will ease as the effects of their spawning runs come into fruition. Our job as guides is to accept we can’t control the uncontrollably and to focus our energies where the effects of cormorant numbers are least felt. When fish numbers are low, we (as always) put considerable effort into an enjoyable tour nonetheless by visiting great locations, providing excellent tuition and doing our best to find fish on any given day in any given circumstances. We will continue to bring a positive energy to all of our valued clients and do our best to provide a memorable experience. And on the bright side, with reduced trout numbers, those trout that survive, tend to grow big without so much competition, and when fish are caught, it is considerably more rewarding. We hope to see you soon!

Why you’ll love it

With all this coastline, who wouldn’t want to go fishing on Tasmania’s East Coast? Pack your gear (or hire some), seek out a beach, jetty, river or estuary and try your luck. You’ll find boat ramps and gear hire in most coastal towns, and the inland streams offer tranquil locations to test your skills against local river trout.

All along the Great Eastern Drive , from Orford to St Helens and the Bay of Fires, you’ll find opportunities to throw in a line and try for local catches of Australian salmon, flathead, bream, even shark and skate. More adventurous fisher folk can also try for a catch of abalone or southern rock lobster (licences required) or join a deep sea or game fishing charter.

Where you’ll find it

On a fishing charter.

St Helens is a prime place to join a professional fishing charter and give offshore and big game fishing a try.

Local operators include Rocky Carosi’s Game Fish and Michael Haley’s Gone Fishing . Charters are also available in Coles Bay with Freycinet Charters and in Orford with South East Charters .

You can try for a river trout in the inland streams and rivers on the east coast, including the Georges River, which flows from the mountains west of St Helens to Georges Bay on the coast. Inland fishing licences and information are available through the Inland Fisheries Service.

At the fishing spot of your choosing

Apart from the east coast’s two marine reserves at Maria Island and Governor Island , you can try for a bite almost anywhere between Orford and St Helens. As you meander along the highway and explore coastal towns, keep watch for a place to stop and spend a some time catching your dinner.

Marine reserves and licences

Marine reserves have been established for the protection of habitat and marine life along the western side of Maria Island and at Governor Island, near Bicheno. Fishing is not permitted in these areas.

Licences are not required for rod and line saltwater or marine fishing in Tasmania, however recreational sea fishing licences are required for some species, including rock lobster and abalone. Check the Department of Primary Industries, Parks Water and Environment  website for current information on licence requirements.

You can also pick up your free copy of the Recreational Sea Fishing Guide From Visitor Information Centres and fishing shops along the coast, or download the Sea Fish Guide phone app .

How long will you need?

Professional fishing charters offer half or full day trips ranging from relaxing reef fishing to the excitement of deep sea game fishing. Or you can just throw in a line at your leisure and spend as long or as little time as you like, fishing from jetties, beaches and rivers along the coast.

To help plan your visit, you can check our travel times and driving distances .
