Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings

  • VisualEditor

Pro Tour the Lord of the Rings was the final Pro Tour of the 2022–23 season . It took place on July 28-30, 2023 in Barcelona, Spain. It followed the release of the straight-to-Modern set The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth , and the first Modern Pro Tour after the return of the Pro Tour Label. Additionally, it was the final Pro Tour before 2023 World Championship , so it was the final chance to earn AMP and lock up a slot.

Modern [ | ]

With most of Constructed Magic being relegated to MTG Arena from 2020 to 2023, Modern had been upended multiple times as to be basically unrecognizable from Mythic Championship IV Barcelona , especially with the release of Modern Horizons 2 .

The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters , released in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth , were expected to make waves in the now turbulent format, by upgrading Tron and Rakdos decks, respectively. Additionally, the land-cycling spells introduced in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth were additions to the Living End and Crashing Footfalls decks. Delighted Halfling and Samwise Gamgee made appearances in select decks as a mana-dork and combo piece, respectively.

Javier Dominguez and Simon Nielsen make it back-to-back Pro Tour Top 8's, joined by two Italian players in Marco Del Pivo and Stefano Vinci. Additionally, Kai Budde would reach his tenth career top eight. Sadly, on this Sunday, the promise "Kai does not lose" would be broken, as Christian Calcano would beat him in the quarterfinals, en route to the finals, piloting a Mono-Green Tron deck. There he would face Jake Beardsley , who in his first Pro Tour, cheered on by commentators and fans, would win the day with a Rakdos Evoke Deck.

MTG World champions secure top 8 finishes at Pro Tour Lord of the Rings

Barcelona hosted The Lord of the Rings Pro Tour tournament from July 28 to 30, showcasing the Modern format for the first time in years and multiple Magic: The Gathering World Champions securing a top-eight playoff finish.

Over 200 of the best Magic players from around the globe gathered in Barcelona for the final Pro Tour tournament of the 2022-2023 season . Players competed in a total of six rounds of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Draft and up to 10 Swiss rounds of Modern Constructed, seeking a top eight finish and an invite to the 2022-2023 Magic World Championship that is scheduled to take place from Sept. 22 to 24 in Las Vegas .

First to secure a top-eight finish at Pro Tour Lord of the Rings was Javier Dominguez. The MTG 2019 World Champion secured a seat at the top eight playoffs after having made the top eight at the previous Pro Tour March of the Machine tournament in Minneapolis. Dominguez brought the Mono-Green Tron deck to Pro Tour Lord Barcelona, defeating Kazune Kosaka on Rakdos Evoke to earn his thirteenth and final match win at the tournament.

Heading into the Barcelona tournament with seven Pro Tour wins and a World Championship title from 1999 was Kai Budde. Playing Temur Rhinos, Budde secured a top-eight finish at Pro Tour Lord of the Rings by defeating Sean Goddard on Five-Color Creativity. Joining Budde and Dominguez were six other top Magic players, including Nielsen and Calcano.

  • First : Javier Dominguez from Spain playing Mono-Green Tron
  • Second : Christian Calcano from the United States playing Mono-Green Tron
  • Third : Simon Nielsen from Denmark playing Mono-Green Tron
  • Fourth : Jake Beardsley from the United States playing Rakdos Evoke
  • Fifth : Marco Del Pivo from Italy playing Temur Rhinos
  • Sixth : Stefano Vinci from Italy playing Temur Rhinos
  • Seventh : Kai Budde from Germany playing Temur Rhinos
  • Eigth: Dominic Harvey from Canada playing Amulet Titan

Having already secured a World Championship invite to Las Vegas from the top-eight group was Simon Nielsen, who also went undefeated during day one of Pro Tour Barcelona. And standing out from the group was Harvey’s eighth-place finish on the only deck that wasn’t Mono-Green Tron, Rakdos Evoke, or Temur Rhinos.

Fans can watch the top eight playoff action unfold at Pro Tour Lord of the Rings on July 30, starting at 3am CT on Twitch .

Flumph

This week will probably go down as the greatest week in the history of MTG finance, with one of the biggest winners of the week being Flumph (prerelease) ! Everyone's favorite Jellyfish was bought out, spiking from bulk rare prices to $2 or $3! It turns out that the D&D meme card combos with Orcish Bowmasters . If you make Flumph (prerelease) indestructible, you can use Orcish Bowmasters to ping it which will make both players draw a card, which then triggers Bowmasters to ping Flumph (prerelease) again, and so on and so forth. Basically, the combo makes both players draw their entire deck, so to win the game you simply play more cards than your opponent so they mill out first! If you want to see why Flumph (prerelease) is shooting to the moon, make sure to check out this week's Against the Odds  where we Jellyfish Combo in Modern. Memes aside, I'd be selling my Flumph (prerelease) s into the hype. While Flumph (prerelease) is probably the funniest way to win with Orcish Bowmasters , it's probably not the most competitive.

Meanwhile if you listened to the Commander Clash Podcast this week , you'll know that the crew was super high on Lorien Revealed in Commander, naming it one of the best blue cards under $1. Well sadly it's not under $1 anymore after increasing 437% to $2.64, although I don't think this one is our fault. This weekend was Pro Tour Lord of the Rings featuring the Modern format and Lorien Revealed was one of the most-played cards in the format, showing up in everything from Control to Murktide to Rhinos. If you opened some Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth, makes sure to pull the island-cycler from your bulk. The card is very strong both in Commander and in 60-card formats, although as an uncommon the price shouldn't get too out of control.

Last but not least, keep an eye on the old Alliances Reserved List rare Soldevi Digger . The artifact's ability to put a card from your graveyard on the bottom of your library is generating some hype thanks to a new Doctor Who legend River Song , which lets you draw cards from the bottom of your deck rather than the top. In just the past couple of days since River Song was revealed, the price has been trending up sharply, with near mint copies on TCGPlayer jumping from around $1.50 to nearly $5. If you really want a copy for your River Song deck, snagging one soon makes sense. If you look at the price chart for Soldevi Digger , you'll see that it has spiked multiple times in the past, and the normal pattern is that it shoots up from bulk to $6 or $8, and then slowly trends back down over the course of the next year. My guess is the same thing will happen this time, so if you need copies, try to snag one soon if you can find one at pre-spike prices, or plan on waiting quite a while for prices to come down.

The Winners and Losers From Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings

One ring to rule them all.

By Corbin Hosler | @Chosler | Published 8/4/2023 | 7 min read

Another Modern Pro Tour finals, another Tron vs. Blood Moon matchup. Who could've guessed?

Well, no one guessed how exciting it was getting there. Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings is in the books, and with it, the new Modern metagame has arrived. And while it may look a lot like Modern metagames of that past – Tron at the top, Thoughtseize right below, and Merfolk always a great choice (it was the high-win rate deck at the Pro Tour, posting an 80% record in 10 matches) – there's a ton going on beneath the hood here and today I want to do a final look-in at Tales of Middle-earth before moving on.

It starts with the top two decks and what may become the new dividing line in Modern: are you a The One Ring deck or an Orcish Bowmasters deck? That is what the finals of Tron versus Rakdos Evoke (Scam) gave us, and maybe a blueprint for Modern moving forward. The rest of the field got a sneaky upgrade in Lorien Revealed ( Living End is down to playing just 15 lands), and things shook out from there.

pro tour the lord of the rings

Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer move over. Karn, the Great Creator ? Well, still busted, but no longer the only viable four-mana play. And my favorite Silvergill Adept ? In a slowed-down Modern, it's better than it's been in a while (except against Bowmasters).

So with all that said, where do things stand from the latest direct-to-Modern set? What was hype and what was real? Let's look at the winners and losers from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.

Most-Played Pro Tour: The Lord of the Rings Cards

pro tour the lord of the rings

Look at the Pro Tour metagame breakdown and most-played cards. The top 10 most-played nonland Modern cards:

The One Ring

Orcish bowmasters.

  • Chalice of the Void
  • Thoughtseize
  • Force of Negation
  • Boseiju, Who Endures
  • Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer

A mix of some very old and some very new cards — with a big slant toward the latter — make up the current Modern metagame. I don't know if Wizard of the Coast expected to see the two new chase cards from Tales of Middle-earth go 1-2 in copies played, but here we are: the winners from The Lord of the Rings are real winners – and Modern accounts for a big part of that.

The Winners and Losers of Middle-earth

pro tour the lord of the rings

Prices on most of the cards in this section have been generally up, but I'm going to take a small reprieve from the "weekly" part of my "weekly winners" column and not hold myself to the last seven days. The One Ring , for instance, is undoubtedly one of the winners coming out of the Pro Tour after living up to the hype, though the price has been mostly flat in the past week.

But The One Ring is all over Modern. It made the finals in Tron, and while it didn't win the entire event don't be fooled: Modern quickly has become about playing or answering the Ring. With tools like Haywire Mite and Urza's Saga , things actually have adjusted to playing through the Ring – even Questing Beast was getting play in Rhinos to push damage through protection – but the new question a deck must answer is if it can handle a turn-four Ring. At $55, the price tag certainly reflects its place in the format.

pro tour the lord of the rings

The Tales of Middle-earth card that actually won the Pro Tour. Orcish Bowmasters is also the second-most expensive card in the set at $50, and its performance in the winning Rakdos Evoke list cemented its place in Modern and as a winner from Middle-earth.

Bowmasters is going to be a stock piece of Black decks moving forward and with good reason. It does pretty much everything the Thoughtseize decks want in Modern and serves as removal and finisher all in one. Pinging down one-toughness creatures is another in a line of Birds of Paradise -killing machines introduced into the format.

In case it wasn't good enough, Bowmasters is also a combo piece. Enter Flumph , which goes infinite with Bowmasters if you can give the 0/4 indestructible. The discovery of the combo and the 5-0 Magic Online finish that went with it has spiked Flumph to $5, and shows yet another angle to Bowmasters.

Lórien Revealed

pro tour the lord of the rings

This is the one that no one saw coming. Yes, we've seen Oliphant and Generous Ent pop up in Living End, but we all know that's a special case. As someone who first sleeved up Living End back in Extended before Modern existed, I've cycled quite a few dorky creatures, then moved on to even sillier cycling creatures. Then things came full circle and now we're cycling Architects of Will again.

That maybe was supposed to happen. Lórien Revealed taking over the Pro Tour? That was a shock to me, the players, and the designers themselves.

But Lórien Revealed gets any color of mana you want in a world of Triomes, and it does it at the cost of one mana. You can use it to grab a basic to get around Blood Moon , and the one-mana cycling cost is key because it means you can cycle and play a land and stay mana-neutral. That makes it essentially "free" in the context of a game, and the fact it occasionally happens to draw three doesn't suck, either.

Lórien Revealed is a $3 Common as of this writing. While I doubt it will stay that high, it's clearly going to be a Breaking Bulk for years to come.

Palantír of Orthanc

pro tour the lord of the rings

This isn't necessarily a Modern development, but Palantír of Orthanc has been making huge waves anyway. It's emerged as a finisher in Legacy, and as anyone who has faced down the seeing stone in Limited knows, it's nearly impossible to keep up with the advantage the artifact offers its owner. It did take a little bit to get noticed, though, which meant that this mythic was actually just $5-7 a month ago. But it's climbed to $15 and doesn't appear to be stopping.

I've played against this card maybe 10 times in Limited, and it holds a key place in both The Lord of the Rings lore and my personal lore: after losing to it so many times, I finally beat a turn-three Palantir by dragging the game out long enough that my opponent eventually milled out thanks to the grindiness of the game and their ringbearer loots. I decided to go out on a high note and retire from drafting the format after that.

Delighted Halfling

pro tour the lord of the rings

Unlike the previous two Tales of Middle-earth cards, those who played the Halfling might have finished less than delighted. Samwise Gamgee formed a combo with Cauldron Familiar and a sacrifice outlet, but even with the 1/2 Halfling leading the way the deck failed to convert.

Delighted Hafling was one of the early winners from the set and its price peaked at $20, but with a less-than-impressive showing the card has crept down to $13 and falling.

Sauron's Ransom

pro tour the lord of the rings

This Fact or Fiction variant has been all the rage over the past few weeks as people experiment with it in control shells. Honestly, it's been really cool to see an old-school effect like this see play, and it helped to (re)spawn a classic archetype: Dimir Control.

But Sauron's Ransom and its associated decks had a merely okay weekend at the Pro Tour. That said, the deck itself is quite powerful and could easily swing more into favor if things shift again or if bans shake up the format at some point.

They had me at Commandeer . And even a Snapcaster Mage sighting! What a time to be alive.

Sailing West

pro tour the lord of the rings

Something tells me we haven't heard the last of The Lord of the Rings in Modern play, and it seems like the set has been a success overall. Next up is Commander Masters, and Wilds of Eldraine is coming up fast. Let me know if you enjoyed this dive into how Tales of Middle-earth's standouts performed at the Pro Tour!

Jake Beardsley Wins Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings

pro tour the lord of the rings

Jake Beardsley, piloting Rakdos Evoke, defeated Christian Calcano and his Mono-Green Tron deck three games to two in the finals to win Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings .

It was quite the weekend for Beardsley—not only did he become a Pro Tour champion at his very first Pro Tour, but it was also his birthday weekend.

He played the most popular deck at the tournament, Rakdos Evoke, which made up nearly 20% of the field. The deck sometimes play out like a midrange deck but its best starts are those of a combo deck, combining “pitch” evoke creatures like Fury and Grief with either Undying Malice or Feign Death to get two enters the battlefield triggers from his evoke creatures and a giant threat…all on Turn 1.

Beardsley faced Calcano in the finals, who is a long time veteran of the Pro Tour circuit and made his first Top 8 at Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings with Mono-Green Tron. Tron is focused on assembly the three Urza lands— Urza’s Mine, Urza’s Power Plant, and Urza’s Tower —as early as possible to make a ton of mana to play expensive, game-ending threats like Karn Liberated and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger .

pro tour the lord of the rings

The finals was a back and forth affair. In Game 1, Calcano was able to assemble Tron plus Karn, the Great Creator to take over the game. Beardsley roared back in Game 2 by playing Dauthi Voidwalker on Turn 2, then using Thoughtseize on Turn 3 to force Calcano to discard Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger , which was exiled by Beardsley’s Dauthi Voidwalker , allowing Beardsley to sacrifice the Voidwalker and cast Ulamog for the Turn 3 win.

Game 3 saw Calcano mulligan to five cards, while Beardsley started with a Turn 1 Fury plus Feign Death to begin attacking for eight damage a turn…which quickly overwhelmed Calcano’s much slower start.

That set up a decisive Game 4 in which Beardsley managed to play a Turn 2 Blood Moon thanks to a Treasure token off of a Turn 1 Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, , shutting off Calcano’s Tron lands. But Calcano fought his way back and stabilized at five life behind an Ensnaring Bridge. Beardsley had a potential six damage in his hand between Kroxa, Titan of Death’s Hunger and Lightning Bolt —but he needed Calcano to either play out his last card to ensure Kroxa would deal three damage or for that card to be a land. On Calcano’s turn, he agonized as to weather to play out his last card—a Chromatic Star —and eventually chose to keep it in hand. Beardsley then played the Kroxa, Calcano discarded the Chromatic Star to take no damage, and then Calcano proceeded to win the game a force Game 5.

After such an intense Game 4, Game 5 turned out to be much shorter and far less stressful. Beardsley had a Turn 1 Grief plus Undying Malice to strip Calcano of any relevant plays, then proceeded to beat Calcano down to win the game, match, and Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings .

New Lord Of The Rings Movie: 1 Returning Character Can Explain A Missing Return Of The King Scene

Peter jackson's lord of the rings movie return is a killer blow for amazon's the rings of power, george r.r. martin's lotr criticism misses the point of gandalf's death.

  • The Lord of the Rings trilogy's back-to-back filming was a bold and ambitious plan that paid off with critical acclaim and box office success.
  • This unique approach helped create a cohesive narrative and ensure timely releases, setting a trend for other franchises to follow.
  • While studios may be hesitant to take similar risks now, The Lord of the Rings remains a standout example of successful filmmaking.

The cultural phenomenon of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy continues to stand the test of time, more than two decades since its theatrical releases, including the franchise's journey behind-the-scenes. While J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novels existed long before the live-action films and are considered among the greatest fantasy novels of all time, they had yet to receive a cinematic adaptation that did them justice. That changed with Peter Jackson's trilogy that earned critical acclaim, Academy Awards, and became box office hits.

Along with these impressive feats, some behind-the-scenes trivia has become as well-known as the films themselves. The most famous example from Lord of the Rings is Viggo Mortensen accidentally breaking his toe when he kicked an orc helmet and cried out in genuine pain when filming a scene where an anguished Aragorn believes Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are dead. As intriguing as this factoid is, the most important element of The Lord of the Rings trilogy's behind-the-scenes journey is how the films were filmed back-to-back.

War of the Rohirrim is bringing back Miranda Otto's Éowyn, which means the perfect opportunity to explore a missing Lord of the Rings movie detail.

The Lord Of The Rings' Back-To-Back Filming Was Incredibly Ambitious

It worked out well, but it was a bold plan.

All three installments of The Lord of the Rings films were shot back-to-back in New Zealand from October 1999 to December 2000. This would have been an ambitious undertaking in any circumstances, made even bolder when considering the massive scale of the blockbuster films. In a 14-month window, Jackson and his creative team shot three films , each with a runtime close to or exceeding three hours, and all of which featured elaborate battle sequences, including the Battle of Helm's Deep and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields .

The Battle of Helm's Deep took 120 days to shoot and mainly had to be filmed at night.

Additional shots were later added between 2001-2003, the years in which Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers , and Return of the King were released in theaters, but all principal photography was completed over 14 months from 1999-2000. This plan only worked because of the strength and clarity of the artistic vision that Jackson and his entire creative team possessed. Such an approach easily could have gone awry, especially if The Fellowship of the Ring did not work as intended, but instead, one of the greatest trilogies in cinematic history was created.

The Lord Of The Rings' Filming Schedule Helped The Films Succeed

The story and box office benefited from it.

The back-to-back filming of The Lord of the Rings trilogy ultimately helped the trilogy narratively and commercially. Filming all three stories this way helped the narrative be more cohesive, allowing each installment to feel distinct while simultaneously feeling like a chapter in a much larger story. This is true to the spirit of Tolkien's vision for his trilogy and helped the trilogy stand out from other film series where the quality between each entry fluctuates dramatically, and to the detriment of the overall series.

In terms of commercial success, the back-to-back filming ensured that the December release dates in 2001, 2002, and 2003 were met without encountering issues that delayed their theatrical debuts. The end-of-the-year holidays proved to be the perfect time for the films to be released and the consistency of these releases helped create expectations of when the sequels would come out. All The Hobbit films followed this proven pattern by releasing in December, and the upcoming War of the Rohirrim will do the same.

Other Franchises Copied The Lord Of The Rings' Template

It became common for part 1 and part 2 movies.

The success of Lord of the Rings ' back-to-back filming prompted other franchises to adopt the same approach, with varying degrees of success. The first franchise to do this was The Matrix , as The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were filmed back-to-back, and both sequels were released in 2003, although neither installment lived up to the heights of the original film. A couple of years later, the two-part story of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and At World's End were filmed back-to-back, and were respectively released in 2006 and 2007.

Harry Potter , Twilight , and The Hunger Games all followed the same template as they filmed parts one and two of The Deathly Hallows , Breaking Dawn , and Mockingjay this way. None of these projects matched the Lord of the Rings ' trilogy's peak of critical and commercial success , even when Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy went back to this method. It proved to be a behind-the-scenes choice that worked extraordinarily well for The Lord of the Rings , but that was difficult to recreate elsewhere with the same outcome.

The Lord Of The Rings Was A Gamble That Won't Be Repeated

Most studios would not take the same risk now.

It is difficult to imagine now, but The Lord of the Rings was an unproven intellectual property at the box office when the trilogy was filmed . Many studios have financed sequels from established franchises to be filmed back-to-back in the years since, but it is highly unlikely that a studio would now do this with an entire trilogy whose success is not guaranteed. What The Lord of the Rings did was a gamble that paid off, but it is the type of gamble that studios will run from now.

This makes it all the more ironic that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has spoken about the need to expand on proven IPs, and specifically emphasized doing so with The Lord of the Rings through the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum and other untitled films in the franchise that are in the works. Studios are now reluctant to take the kind of risk that helped The Lord of the Rings films become an enduring success. The Lord of the Rings was made at the right time and under the right circumstances that will probably never be repeated.

The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is a multimedia franchise consisting of several movies and a TV show released by Amazon titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The franchise is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's book series that began in 1954 with The Fellowship of the Ring. The Lord of the Rings saw mainstream popularity with Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
