8 reasons Belize should be on your travel bucket list

Ben Smithson

Editor's note: The team at The Points Guy loves to travel, but now is not the time for unnecessary trips. Health officials note that the fastest way to return to normalcy is to stop coming in contact with others. That includes ceasing travel. We are publishing travel deals and destination content because we should all use this time to think about and plan our next adventures. TPG doesn't advise booking trips for travel until the late spring or early summer — and even then be mindful of cancellation policies.

You may be familiar with popular destinations like Mexico and Costa Rica when dreaming about a Central American vacation. I recently traveled through the region and fell in love with the lesser-known country of Belize .

While you may not be able to travel right now, if you're stuck at home, now is a great time to research new adventures for when you can travel again. Here's why you should consider adding Belize to your bucket list.

1. No Spanish required

Belize is the only country in Central America with English as its official language. Why? The country was declared a colony of the British Empire in 1862, known then as British Honduras. While many locals also speak a native, regional Creole language (and many also speak Spanish given the country's close geographic proximity to Mexico and Guatemala ), most speak fluent English.

You won't have any issues speaking English 100% of the time with locals there, which makes it very easy to travel through the country .

2. There's a fantastic mix of Caribbean and Latino culture

The first thing that struck me about Belize when I arrived in the country was the accents -- locals sounded far more like they were from Barbados rather than Spain . Why is this? Because Belize is known as the bridge between the Caribbean and Central America. While geographically in Central America, the British colonization has added a culture similar to British-colonized Caribbean Islands. This proved to be a great mix -- for example, cuisine-wise you can expect to find the Mexican food you'll know and love but also delicious Caribbean food like jerk chicken and fresh, simply grilled seafood.

To drink, there's tequila sitting right alongside rum punch.

Both the Central American and Caribbean cultures are vibrant and colorful, especially when it comes to music and scenery, and they go wonderfully well side by side in Belize.

3. Caye Caulker is possibly the most relaxing place in the world

My favorite place in Belize was the tiny island of Caye Caulker, which is an easy boat ride from Belize City, the largest city in the country. It is un-Belize-ably relaxing. The island's motto is "go slow," which means slow down, relax and take it easy. A local actually politely reminded me of this as I was walking down the street -- I needed to relax and slow down.

And it was wonderful.

If you have a picture of a beautiful remote tropical island with hammocks and palm trees gently swaying in the breeze, Caye Caulker is all that and more . Brightly painted little beach huts, no cars, freshly cooked seafood and endless sunshine was a perfect mix to bliss out in. The caye is so narrow you can easily walk from one side to the other in five minutes. This means there are no worries about transport around the island -- you easily (and slowly!) walk everywhere.

4. World-class snorkeling

You may not know this, but Belize has the second largest barrier reef in the world. The largest is the famous Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland, Australia . I'm Australian and have snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef several times. I would rate the snorkeling in Belize as good, if not better, than Australia. In a single snorkeling trip , I saw:

  • Hundreds of fish
  • Huge stingrays
  • Turtles (this was the highlight!)
  • Dozens of nurse sharks

I've snorkeled all over the world and can't remember anywhere else where I have seen so many different aquatic animals all in one place. You don't need a scuba diving qualification to see all these -- just a snorkel.

5. From the beach to the rainforest

Most visitors to Belize split their time between a beachy destination like Caye Caulker or Ambergis Caye, and a rainforest stop farther inland -- San Ignacio is a popular forest base to explore nearby attractions. Given the small size of the country, you can easily get from one to the other in half a day.

For me, this was the best of both worlds -- waking up at the beach in Caye Caulker, having one last walk down the peaceful, relaxing island and then heading into the lush, green, beautiful rainforest farther inland to continue the journey. San Ignacio is famous for eco-lodges where you can truly get back to nature.

6. Caving adventures

There's plenty to do and see around San Ignacio, but the main reason people come is to visit the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves , more commonly known as the ATM caves. The National Geographic Society has declared the ATM caves to be the most sacred caves in the world. Visiting them was a unique experience, combining the adventure of caving with unique Mayan history. With our expert guide, we walked through the rainforest and then into the caves where the terrain ranged from dry rocks through to deep water.

It was a fun and exciting way to learn about how the ancient civilizations used the cave system and also a great way to get some proper exercise while traveling.

7. It was not as expensive as I was expecting

In my research before visiting Belize I had consistently heard the same thing -- for Central America, it was expensive. Not Maldives or St Lucia expensive, but noticeably more expensive than its neighboring countries that are very cheap to visit.

While it was slightly more expensive than Mexico and Guatemala it was not an overly costly destination. Especially in Caye Caulker, you just need to be sensible about the realities of being on an island. Items that could be sourced locally were very affordable. A liter of (very) freshly squeezed orange juice was only $2.50. Happy Hours could score you two glasses of rum punch for $5 (total). Freshly caught seafood, grilled and served with rice and beans and salad was affordable, too.

A local specialty is "Fry Jacks' -- a delicious mix of breakfast ingredients (like bacon and eggs) inside a fluffy, deep-fried dough that looks a little like a Cornish pasty. These are made fresh to order, will definitely fill you up and cost all of $2.50.

If you are looking for imported ingredients they will be expensive because of the importation process -- there was an Italian restaurant on Caye Caulker serving Italian cheese and wine that was not cheap at roughly about $30 per person for pasta, wine and dessert.

8. Mayan ruins everywhere

While neighboring Guatemala and Mexico are well known for their Mayan ruins , Belize actually has more Mayan ruins per square mile than any other country. There's plenty to choose from and San Ignacio is also very close to the Guatemalan border if you want to pop over to see the nearby famous Tikal ruins.

How to get there on points and miles

There are plenty of flights from major U.S. gateway airports.

You can fly American Airlines from Dallas (DFW), Miami (MIA), and Los Angeles (LAX) to Belize City. Fly Delta from Atlanta (ATL). I would recommend spending as little time in Belize City as possible -- the best the country has to offer is outside of the city.

Bottom line

Belize surprised and delighted me -- again, you'd better Belize-it! It was an easy, affordable, beautiful country to visit that had everything I was looking for to relax, educate and excite me.

While you may not be able to travel right now, you should definitely add Belize to your bucket list.

Money in Belize

It's always advisable to bring money in a variety of forms on a vacation: a mix of cash, credit cards, debit cards, and, occasionally, traveler's checks.

The Belize dollar, abbreviated BZ$, is the official currency of Belize. It is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a ratio of 2 Belize dollars to 1 U.S. dollar. Both currencies are acceptable at almost any business or establishment around the country. As long as you have U.S. dollars or U.S. dollar-based traveler's checks, it is entirely unnecessary to change for Belize dollars in advance of your trip. However, travelers from Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will want to change a sufficient amount of their home currency to U.S. dollars before traveling. To check the very latest exchange rates before you leave home, point your browser to www.xe.com/ucc .

Once you are in Belize, the change you receive will most likely be in Belize dollars, although it is not uncommon for it to be a mix of both currencies. However, do try to have some small-denomination bills for paying taxis, modest meal tabs, and tips.

The branch of the Atlantic Bank at the international airport is only open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 2:30pm. If you are flying out on a Sunday, or outside of these hours, be sure to spend or exchange any Belize dollars beforehand.

Tip: Be careful to note whether or not the price you are being quoted is in Belize or U.S. dollars. Many hotels, restaurants, and tour operators actually quote in U.S. dollars. If in doubt, ask. At a two-to-one ratio, the difference can be substantial.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are another safe way to carry money. They also provide a convenient record of all your expenses, and they generally offer relatively good exchange rates. You can withdraw cash advances from your credit cards at banks or ATMs, but high fees make credit card cash advances a pricey way to get cash. Keep in mind that you'll pay interest from the moment of your withdrawal, even if you pay your monthly bills on time. Also, note that many banks now assess a 1% to 3% "transaction fee" on all charges you incur abroad (whether you're using the local currency or your native currency).

Most major credit cards are accepted in Belize, although MasterCard and Visa are much more widely accepted than American Express, especially by smaller hotels, restaurants, and tour operators. While there are some exceptions, Diners Club and Discover are rarely accepted around Belize.

Some credit card companies recommend that you notify them of any impending trip abroad so that they don't become suspicious when the card is used numerous times in a foreign destination and block your charges. Even if you don't call your credit card company in advance, you can always call the card's toll-free emergency number if a charge is refused -- a good reason to carry the phone number with you. But perhaps the most important lesson here is to carry more than one card with you on your trip; a card might not work for any number of reasons, so having a backup is the smart way to go.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Money in Belize

The Belize currency is the Belize dollar (BZ$), which typically equals about BZ$2 per each US$1. Travelers can use both currencies at most businesses in Belize, although smaller establishments may only take Belize dollars. Prices may be listed in American dollars, and you can receive change in either American or Belize dollars.

Belize

Before you board your plane for the tranquil beaches of Belize, here is some assurance that there is little cause for concern when visiting the country: The nation of Belize has a stable democratic government . Specifically it is a parliamentary constitutional democracy. The Belizean economy did suffer some setbacks during 'The Great Recession' (as most countries did), but is now enjoying a growing economy. There are no issues with the government, economy, or currency which might negatively impact your trip or cause you difficulty during your holiday in Belize.

Belize isn’t cheap — it’s on par with Costa Rica , which is probably the most expensive country in Central America. If you’re traveling to Belize from Guatemala , Mexico, or Honduras, you’re going to have to get used to traveling in a more costly country. This is partially because Belize’s economy relies upon imports and has fairly high taxes. Even so, costs here are still cheaper than most places in the United States or Europe.

Midrange travelers will likely spend BZ$200 to BZ$300 a day for comfortable hotels and good food. Midrange hotels run around BZ$150 to BZ$200 a night, while more luxurious accommodations begin at around BZ$300. Hotels are more expensive during the dry season (December through May) and around holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Semana Santa. A tasty meal with a couple of drinks will cost you anywhere from BZ$20 to BZ$50.

Banks and ATMs

ATMS are available in most major towns , and will typically accept Visa, MasterCard, Plus and Cirrus cards. ATMs only dispense Belize dollars. Some ATMs may charge a fee for each use and enforce a withdrawal limit per day (usually around BZ$500). Banks that are part of the Global ATM Alliance do not charge a fee for cash withdrawals at the ATMs of other Allegiance members — this includes Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, BNP Paribas, and Scotiabank.

Major banks in Belize include Bank of Nova Scotia, Atlantic Bank, and Belize Bank. Most banks are open from Monday–Thursday until 2 P.M., but are open slightly later on Fridays. They are usually closed for lunch, and are always closed on Sundays.

Changing Money

You can exchange money at most banks in Belize to obtain Belizean currency . Many banks that exchange currencies – including Barclays Bank, Atlantic Bank Ltd., Belize Bank, and the Bank of Nova Scotia – are often set near the main plaza in cities . Money can also be exchanged at a casa de cambio (exchange house). After exchanging currency, keep your receipt of sale.

Credit Cards

Though you won't be able to use your debit card in Belize, most major credit cards are accepted .

Larger hotels, restaurants, and shops typically accept Visa and MasterCard. Certain places accept American Express (AmEx), but few establishments will take Diners Club or Discover. Some establishments will include a 2–5 percent surcharge for travelers using a credit card. Credit cards can be used to obtain cash advances from major banks in Belize; you will, however, incur additional charges when doing this.

It’s a good idea to notify your credit card company (and bank) before traveling abroad. That way, they won’t get suspicious when foreign charges start showing up.

Traveler's Checks

Traveler’s checks can be exchanged at most banks. Having a reputable brand – like Visa or AmEx – will make this easier, as will having checks made out in American dollars. You may have to pay per-check fees when cashing each traveler’s check. Traveler’s checks are accepted at many hotels in Belize, but it’s uncommon for restaurants to accept them.

Taxes and Tipping

Many hotels and restaurants include a 10–15 percent service charge on the bill. Even if this isn’t included, it’s good form to tip this amount. Taxi drivers don’t need to be tipped, but feel free to tip them if they provide solid service. Tip tour guides 10–15 percent if they’ve done a good job.

A general sales tax of 10 percent is applied to all purchases, and hotels will add a 9 percent tax to the price of a room. Furthermore, there’s a US$20 departure tax when leaving the airport, but this is usually included in the price of a flight. Using a credit card will also incur a tax; most businesses tack on an extra 2–5 percent to the bill.

Does Belize Accept Credit Cards? Credit Cards and Alternatives in Belize in 2023

Are you planning a trip to Belize and wondering if your credit card will be accepted there? Indeed, whether or not your credit card will be accepted overseas can be a central concern for many travellers about to embark on an international trip. After all, not all countries have the same level of credit card acceptance, so it's very helpful to understand credit card acceptance policies and trends before you travel.

But what about Belize? Can you use your credit card there? The short answer is yes , you can use your credit card in Belize. However, although credit cards can sometimes be used in Belize (especially in more touristy areas), cash is still by far the more popular option there, so keep in mind that outside of tourist areas, you might not have much luck paying with your card.

Wise is a great alternative to credit cards when travelling to Belize, offering competitive exchange rates, low fees, and real-time spending notifications.

Whether you're planning a trip to Belize or simply curious about credit card acceptance policies in different parts of the world, this article is for you. We'll look at credit card acceptance in Belize and cover the payment methods that are commonly accepted, as well as any fees that you may incur for each.

Yes, many (although not all) shops, businesses, hotels, restaurants, and other commercial establishments in Belize will readily accept credit card payments — making it a great way to spend your money in Belize.

Although cash is king in Belize, credit and debit cards issued by major global providers like VISA and Mastercard are commonly accepted in touristy areas (although this is less the case in non-touristy regions). If your card is issued by American Express, Diner's Club, Discovery, or another card company, there's a good chance they'll also be accepted in Belize, but we recommend checking with your bank or card provider directly to make sure that Belize dollar currency conversion is indeed supported, and that card machines and ATMs in Belize commonly support cards of this type.

How to Use Credit Cards in Belize

Using your credit card in Belize works just like it does in your home country. In general, you'll simply need to do the following to use your card to make a payment:

  • Confirm your transaction amount,
  • Tap (or insert or swipe) your credit card,
  • Enter your PIN if prompted,
  • Wait for the payment to be authorised and for the receipt to print.

In general, we recommend keeping your receipt for your records and reconciling your credit card statement. It can sometimes be interesting to see how much you paid in a foreign currency versus the amount that was debited in your home currency. As we'll see in the next section, the percentage difference can sometimes be very high!

Cost of Using Credit Cards in Belize

Every time you pay with your credit card in a foreign currency like the Belize dollar, you'll be charged several fees before the final amount is reflected on your card statement. These fees are charged by the following parties:

  • Your credit card company (VISA, Mastercard, etc.),
  • Your bank or credit card provider,
  • The ATM network (if you're withdrawing cash).

Here are the average ranges of these various fees when making dollar credit card payments in Belize:

Overall, unless your credit card is specially geared towards international spending and doesn't charge foreign currency exchange fees, using credit cards to pay in Belize is normally rather pricey due to the multiple fees and charges racked up along the way. As always, though, we recommend checking with your individual card provider or bank to see for yourself which fees you'll be charged for spending in Belize.

Alternatives to Credit Cards in Belize

A cheaper alternative to using a credit card for travelling to Belize is a prepaid travel debit card.

Just like credit cards, prepaid debit cards (which are also normally issued by VISA or Mastercard) provide an excellent way to pay while visiting Belize, the main difference being that you normally pay lower fees and exchange rates . Depending on where you live, you'll probably have options from your bank or a third-party provider to use a commission-free debit card or a multi-currency card which can help you dodge high Belize dollar conversion costs, including DCCs .

According to our analysis of dozens of providers, the top two options for travelling to Belize, in general, are the following:

FAQ About Credit Cards in Belize

Yes, many (although not all) shops, restaurants, businesses, and commercial establishments in Belize do accept credit cards. However, we recommend checking with the vendor beforehand to ensure that they accept your specific type of credit card.

Credit cards from major card companies like VISA, Mastercard, and American Express are generally always accepted in Belize. However, it's important to remember that acceptance may vary depending on the individual business, so checking in advance is a good idea.

Unless your credit card is designed for international spending, it's likely that you'll incur exchange rate margins and currency conversion fees when using your credit card in Belize. In general, these fees range from 2.5% to 5% per transaction, so it's not negligible! To save money, we recommend using a travel debit card like Wise to avoid hidden fees altogether.

Both are commonly-accepted forms of payment in Belize, so it depends on your preference and the specific circumstances. Credit cards can be a convenient and safe way to make purchases, but having cash on hand is always a good idea, especially if you plan to visit less touristy areas. Moreover, some businesses prefer that customers pay with cash to avoid the processing fees of card transactions.

You must report your lost or stolen credit card to your bank or credit card provider immediately. They can help you cancel the card and issue a replacement. Additionally, having a backup credit card or cash in emergencies is also a good idea for moments like these.

It may be the second-smallest country in Central America but Belize delivers across the board .

Eco-adventures by the score, cultural heritage as diverse as the landscape, Maya temples that tower over modern human-made structures, hundreds of islands with talcum-white sands , the world’s second-largest barrier reef, made for diving ... you get the idea .

On the mainland, overgrown rainforests reveal hiking trails to double waterfalls. Complex cave systems run underground, while winding rivers are best enjoyed by inner tube. Then there’s the food: aromatic, franchise-free bites can be found on every other street corner, as is the inviting Belizean spirit.

But where to start? Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Belize before you even set off.

Belize can feel like both the Caribbean and Central America all at once – and you can experience it all in a single vacation, as it’s easy to cross the entire country in a one-day road trip . Still, it’s better to do things the Belizean way: unhurried.

Aim to spend at least a week here. Split your itinerary between Northern, Central and Southern Belize , and plan to stay at least three nights in each area. This will allow you enough time to enjoy your accommodation, visit the top-rated sights and recover in between.

2. You probably won’t need a visa

A select few countries do, however. Verify whether you need an entry visa to Belize on the Immigration Department’s website . But note that all visitors — even visa-free entrants — will need to apply for an extension to stay in the country for more than 30 days, depending on your citizenship.

3. Drive during the day

With rental cars costing as little as US$50 per day, it’s a doddle navigating the five major highways of Belize.

However, they’re dimly lit and the single-lane roads are often lined with “sleeping policemen,” a colloquial nickname for speed bumps. They’re often unpainted too, so it’s best to stick to driving in the daylight hours.

4. Watch out for wildlife on the roads

Green signs are directional, while yellow signs warn that wildlife could be crossing. Look out for tapir on the John Smith Airport Link Rd and coatimundis on the scenic Hummingbird Highway.

Streetside barbecues on Caye Caulker where you can enjoy grilled chicken, lobster (in season), shrimp kebabs an other BBQ treats cooked on the spot

5. Try the street food

Scooped from deep pots of fragrant stews, coconut milk-infused rice and beans are often served with caramelized fried plantain. A quasi-religious meal, everything is homemade and some may take offense if you don’t attempt to finish your plate.

Street food is relatively cheap here . Don't miss the gravy-filled meat pies that fog clear-plastic containers balancing on the bicycle handlebars of mobile vendors, or the “johnny cakes,” coconut-based baked biscuits sliced and stuffed for long journeys.

Other staples include masa (a dough of ground corn) that is transformed into deep-fried favorites like panades (crispy crescents of beans, cheese, or hashed fish) and salbutes (open-faced rounds piled with shredded chicken and cabbage).

Late-night grub is often meat-heavy street tacos, pupusas (a cornmeal cake stuffed with beans, cheese and fried pork), burritos, or a not-so-humble hotdog with bacon and caramelized onions. Any griddle on wheels will fill your stomach for BZ$10.

6. It’s OK to drink tap water in Belize but filtered water is the norm

While it’s OK to drink tap water in Belize, filtered water is the norm. It usually comes in small bottles or from a five-gallon water dispenser.

Since Belize’s single-use plastic ban took effect in April 2019 (albeit excluding disposable water bottles), carrying a reusable water bottle is applauded. Hotels and resorts will often have large dispensers available near the front desk and most restaurants will refill your bottle for free.

7. Time feels more like a suggestion in Belize

Belize offers a very slow, laid-back pace of life. That goes for everything from government offices (including immigration) to public transportation. Be flexible with your plans and be patient, even on the mainland.

Public transportation overland and on water is less than a third of the cost of domestic airlines such as  Maya Island Air and Tropic Air  but, unsurprisingly, it will take you much longer to go the scenic route. Both the water taxis and bus routes are unlikely to leave on time, so account for 15 minutes of wiggle room.

To avoid stopping for every roadside hitchhiker along the way when using the bus system , always choose the “Express” option if your final destination is advertised on the windshield.

8. Be polite if you want to impress the locals

Locals will greet one another and reciprocity is expected. Bidding a general “good morning” as you enter a room goes a long way, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is returned with a smile. Belizeans like to chat, so expect to make small talk while waiting in a queue.

9. Petty crime is your main safety concern in Belize

Like any destination, it’s best not to make yourself a target for crimes of opportunity. Avoid isolated areas, don’t be flashy with money or jewelry, and don’t take public transport alone at night.

Taxis are pricier but safer and easily recognizable with green license plates. Hotels will also usually have their own list of trusted drivers.

In tourist zones, some vendors may be persistent, but a polite “no, thank you” should do the trick. Crime in Belize is largely drug- or gang-related, more notably in select pockets of Belize City.

Unless actively seeking them out, the average traveler naturally bypasses infamous hotspots entirely by sticking to designated tourism zones. Beyond signage, Tourism Police are omnipresent on foot, bicycle and ground patrols, but there’s still no better indicator of safety than your own gut.

Guide Jose Magaña, a practicing Maya healer who’s well-versed in the native flora of Elijio Panti National Park, teaching Alex Schechter.

10. Don’t forget to tip

Tourism has helped to instill a tipping culture in Belize, but it’s not an outright requirement. Some restaurants auto-charge up to a 20% sit-down service charge, so double-check receipts before (unnecessarily) adding more.

A gratuity is expected in cash for servers, appreciated for tours and goes a long way for housekeeping, but it’s totally discretionary based on the service you experience. You can skip tipping elsewhere but taxis sometimes round up a fare as Belize has no fixed tariffs.

If you’ve received great service, you can match the 12.5% General Sales Tax on the receipt. For an exceptional tour, a 20% tip is recommended.

11. Pack some US dollars

You won’t need to carry loads of cash, as there are plenty of point-of-sale machines and ATMs in the more popular destinations.

US dollars are accepted across the country at a rate of two-to-one, though try to carry US$10 and US$20 notes as they are easier to make change. You’ll likely get smaller bills in Belize dollars back.

12. Don’t fear the rainy season

Belize’s rainy season (June to November) coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season. This means cheaper hotel rates, lower room occupancy, and better deals.

Major attractions – like Maya sites, archaeological reserves, hiking trails and waterfalls – will all stay open during this period unless nature decides otherwise. All in all, it can be a good time to visit.

Flooding risks tend to subside within 48 hours and the high winds are more of a risk to your driving than the downpours. Some hotels and restaurants will close during their slowest months, such as October, so check ahead.

13. Buy travel insurance

This is always recommended but especially so if you decide to visit during the rainy season. Buy travel insurance to protect your trip should a hurricane cut it short.

14. Belize has decriminalized weed, but that does not mean it’s legal

In November 2017, Belize amended its Misuse of Drugs Act to decriminalize marijuana use on private property for adults in possession of up to 10g.

However, be warned: selling, growing, or smoking weed on public property remains a federal offense. Despite the impression given by some, it’s best not to buy or sell marijuana.

15. The LGBTIQ+ community is generally accepted

Although homosexuality wasn’t formally legalized in Belize until 2016, it was the first former British colony in the Caribbean to overturn its anti-sodomy laws. Still, public displays of affection between same-sex couples may solicit stares here. The main tourism zones, such as Ambergris Caye , are the most gay friendly.

16. Solo women travelers are welcomed

No stranger to solo travelers or backpackers on a budget, Belize is also fairly safe for women traveling alone. Harassment will often come in the form of cat-calling, but nuisances tend to back off once if you stand your ground or ignore them outright. “No” is largely respected here, but sometimes you may have to say it loudly.

Money in Belize and Belize Currency Conversions

I get lots of q uestions from first-time visitors about money in Belize — does everyone accept credit cards, do I need to bring cash to Belize, do shops accept US dollars, do ATMs take US or foreign cards? It’s just smart travel planning. So here is a breakdown of the basics of money and Belize Currency.

american express travel belize

Belize Currency, the Belize Dollar or BZD

$2 Belize Dollars = $1US D

The Belize dollar is the official currency of Belize – and it is pegged (or set) to the US Dollar.

Bills come in $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 – coins, 1 cent, 5, 10, 25 (or a “shilling”), 50 cents and my favorite the $1 coin.

Yes, that is the Queen of England on the front.  While Belize has been her own country since 1981, we are still part of the British Commonwealth along with 55 other countries .  Interestingly… Barbados just left the commonwealth last year .

And there has been talk of it in Belize, especially since the recent visit of Kate and William (4/2022) and the Queen’s death (9/22).

Belize Currency - the 20bzd bill

Can I use US dollars in Belize?

Yes. Always. The two are interchangeable – just make sure the bills are in good condition!

Can I use US coins? No.

You’ll find prices quoted in both US and BZD across the country. In general, the higher prices are quoted in US dollars – like real estate, hotel, and tour prices. All prices at supermarkets, most restaurants (some resort quote in USD), and shops are quoted in local prices.

Always double-check on menus how your price is being quoted. Ask if you are unsure or if it isn’t specified.

Belize Currency - Ice Cream prices

“Is that price Belize or US?”

TIP: I’d recommend bringing smaller bills – $1, $5, $10 and $20US in your wallet. $50US or $100US bills will be hard to cash in smaller villages or small shops and restaurants. People don’t have the change and/or these large bills are somewhat rare and can be counterfeit – no one wants to take that risk.

Make sure that your bills are in good condition! A few years ago, the Belize banks decided they can no longer accept US bills with ANY marks or tears. So take a close look – at things you wouldn’t even notice at home. For a pen mark or a tiny tear.

Nothing more annoying than being down to your last $20US bill and finding that no one will accept it.

(If you do get into that position, you will find that some of the larger supermarkets or bars — ones that deal with many tourists — will accept the bill – or help you out. Just ask them at the counter before you order.)

ATM Machines in Belize

Cash machines in Belize dispense money in Belize dollars. Never USD.  There is often a $500bzd-$800bzd limit depending on the bank.

You will find ATM machines in all major tourist towns and more urban centers – San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, San Ignacio, Punta Gorda, Dangriga, Belize City, Belmopan, etc. But they are not EVERYWHERE in every resort and store like they can be in big cities in the US. They are generally in town…and there are handful.

Remember, you will often be hit with two fees – one from your bank for international use (find it out before you leave) and one for the local Belize bank.

Belize dollars are not accepted outside of Belize — except at some border towns like Melchor, Guatemala, and Chetumal, Mexico — so be careful of the amount you withdraw – especially at the end of your trip.

If you are staying in a more remote area – one of the smaller cayes or a less touristy village, please ask your hotel/resort for information before you arrive.

Belize Bank and Atlantic Bank accept foreign ATM cards.

Exchanging Money in Belize

There are no official money exchanges in Belize and banks (for some reason) give a less-than-ideal rate for exchanging money (like $1.96BZD to $1US).

There is no reason to exchange cash in a bank — you can use your US dollars everywhere –  at bars, restaurants, shops and get BZD in return.

Can I use Canadian dollars or Euros in Belize?

If I were you, I would exchange Canadian dollars or any other currency into US dollars before arriving in Belize or any Central American country. You are not going to get the most advantageous rates for exchange here — so do it before you arrive.

If for some reason, you have other currencies (Canadian dollars, Mexican pesos, UK pounds, or Euros), most banks will exchange it for Belize dollars but again, BAD RATES. I’d do my best to avoid.

Travelers Checks

Wait…do they make travelers checks anymore? Would it be rude to suggest a time machine?  Yes…rude.  But these are a major pain in the butt.  I’d exchange in the US and bring the US cash.  That kinda defeats the whole purpose.

When can I use credit cards in Belize?

Unlike the US market, cash is still the standard form of payment in Belize.

These days all hotels, many larger restaurants, supermarkets and bars accept credits cards for payment – generally for amounts over $20bzd. Your hotel expects credit card payment, as do the larger and more expensive restaurants. It is no problem at all.

Belize Currency - Local Menu Prices

VISA and Mastercard are generally preferred and at many places, the only cards taken. American Express charges high fees to the merchant and won’t be accepted at many spots.

Banks generally assess a 3-6% fee (lower end, VISA/MC and higher end, AmEx) for use of credit cards to the merchant, so cash is ALWAYS preferred.

You might even find that for larger purchases – like art or more expensive souvenirs, the vendor will give you a small “cash discount” – often 5% but it can be higher.

At smaller merchants and often in smaller villages, cash is your only option.

Belize Currency - Coconut Piggy Bank

SO…How much cash should I Bring To Belize?

No matter how experienced you are, or the careful planning you do, don’t you always find you underestimate this?

I’d certainly bring enough cash with me (in US dollars) to make my first few days easy – again, stick with the smaller bills. No one wants to be running around the evening they arrive looking for an ATM machine.

I can’t estimate the amount for you – but budget enough for smaller meals like breakfast and lunch and shopping you might do. Check if your lodging has a safe (most do) where you can keep your cash.

If you plan to tick EVERYTHING off your bucket list , you’ll need more money.

There is a legal limit: up to $10,000USD – any amount over that must legally be declared at Customs on arrival.

And again, bring smaller bills — it’s nice to have $1s and $5s for tipping and smaller things like beverages or snacks as soon as you get off the plane.

Hopefully that helps. And if you’ve visited and have suggestions, additions or questions, please let me know!

Eat local food (AND street food), go on tours, talk to people – especially those who live here – for suggestions and local color, take the precautions that you would take visiting any new place and you’ll enjoy your time in Belize.

Tips for Handling Money when You Visit Belize- from ATM Machines to the Exchange Rate

I understand handling the money thing just fine, but I don’t understand why there’s more of an interest to leave the commonwealth after Bill & Kate’s big adventure. Did they create a faux pax I didn’t hear about? BTW: I don’t give a whit about the monarchy but I do wish the best for Kate (and William)

There were protests from the Maya in Belize – and I believe in other parts of the Caribbean. I don’t think it was the two of them…more the show they put on and the…colonialism of it all. They seem to bring controvery everywhere these days.

american express travel belize

Hadn’t been down in 4 years and was pleasantly surprised when we were there in January. Brought way more cash than we needed. Only business we went to that didn’t take VISA was The Baker.

Thanks for that…looks like cards are becoming WAY more used. And mmmm…the baker.

american express travel belize

If u plan on going . DONT PUT OFF. I wish I had went years ago. Been all over the world and wish I would have gone earlier. It will b my first place to visit yearly. Everyone so friendly.

Great advice.

american express travel belize

Great Country, Great people! However , as everywhere there are con artist. On a few occasions and very few when you hand a $20 U.S bill to a vendor for a souvenir that cost $10 Belize dollars he may hand you back 5 1dollar U.S Bill’s and 10 dollars Belize. You should have a total with both currencies combined $15 U.S. But the above is only $10 U.S. Again buyer beware!!!

That’s sneaky but very clever. I bet they get away with that a lot. I guess you should request all BZD.

  • The American Express Travel Portal works much like an online travel agency for Amex cardholders.
  • Use Membership Rewards points, cash, or combine both to book flights, hotels, cars, and more.
  • Some cardholders get exclusive deals including luxury hotel benefits and premium flight discounts.
  • Read Business Insider's guide to the best American Express cards .

This guide explains what you need to know about booking airfare, hotels, and more through the Amex Travel Portal — and how to make the most of your Amex points.

Introduction to American Express Travel

The American Express Travel Portal is a one-stop website for booking flights, hotel stays, rental cars, cruises, and vacation packages. This third-party travel booking platform is primarily designed for people who have an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards points , like The Platinum Card® from American Express, American Express® Gold Card, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, or American Express® Business Gold Card.

American Express Membership Rewards Overview

The American Express Membership Rewards program is one of the most popular and valuable credit card "currencies" because rewards can be used in a variety of ways . You can use Membership Rewards points to pay down your credit card balance.

You can also purchase gift cards, merchandise, food delivery, and more, in addition to booking travel through the Amex Travel Portal. You can also transfer Membership Rewards points over 20 Amex airline and hotel partners  including Delta , British Airways, and Hilton .

How Amex Travel benefits American Express cardholders

Amex Travel functions much the same way as online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Expedia or Booking.com, allowing you to search for and book flights, hotels, rental cars, vacation packages, and cruises.

Anyone can use Amex Travel, but the best deals and benefits are reserved for American Express cardholders. When you have a credit card that earns Amex Membership Rewards points, you'll have to option to pay for your booking with points (if it's prepaid), your Amex card, or a combination of both. Additionally, you'll earn bonus points when you pay for travel with a Membership Rewards credit card.

The Amex Travel portal is also where Amex Platinum Card, Amex Business Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, and Amex Business Gold Card members can access The Hotel Collection to receive room upgrades and an onsite credit to use at participating hotels.

And if you have a Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card, you'll have access to the International Airline Program , which offers lower fares for international premium-class travel on over 20 airlines, and the Fine Hotels & Resorts collection for hotel stays.

Always compare the cash price of an airline ticket or hotel room before you transfer any type of flexible points to a travel partner. In some cases, you'll pay fewer points by redeeming points for a paid booking instead of an award flight or stay.

Benefits of American Express Travel

As with any OTA, there are pros and cons to using Amex Travel. Here are some of the main considerations for you to understand.

Use your Amex points at any time

One of the biggest benefits is being able to redeem your points for travel without having to worry about award charts, blackout dates, or transfer partners. Amex Travel makes it simple to use your points, even with independent hotels and smaller airlines without a popular loyalty program.

You'll still earn airline miles and elite-qualifying miles

You won't earn points or elite night credits when you book a hotel with Amex Travel, but you can earn airline and work toward elite qualification on flights, as long as your frequent flyer number is on the reservation.

Earn bonus points when paying with certain Amex cards

Some American Express cards earn bonus points for travel booked through the Amex travel portal. For example, Amex Platinum Card earns 5 points per dollar spent on airfare booked with Amex Travel or directly with airlines on up to $500,000 in spending per year, and the Amex Gold Card earns 3x points in the same categories with no limit.

Platinum cardholders get discounts on premium airfare

Amex Platinum Card and Amex Business Platinum Card members can access discounts on international premium-class flights through the International Airline Program, and sometimes save hundreds of dollars per ticket.

Get bonus perks at luxury hotels through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts and The Hotel Collection

Platinum cardholders can book through the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program within the travel portal, which gets you upgrades, free breakfast, and elite-like benefits at participating properties. Gold and Platinum cardholders can also book through The Hotel Collection, another program also found within Amex Travel, to get extras including onsite credits and other perks.

Downsides of American Express Travel

Now that we've listed a number of Amex Travel benefits, there are some drawbacks that may significantly impact your booking strategy.

You won't earn hotel credit or elite status when booking through Amex Travel

Most hotels will not let you earn loyalty program points or elite credits on stays booked through Amex Travel, and you may not be able to use your hotel elite status benefits during your stay. This is because most properties consider the Amex travel portal to be a third-party booking site, and elite benefits usually apply only when you book directly with the hotel.

This drawback won't matter as much at smaller chains or boutique hotels, but you'll need to weigh the benefits of booking through Amex if you're chasing elite status with a major chain such as Marriott or Hilton.

Trip changes, interruptions, and cancellations can be harder to change through Amex Travel

Many airlines allow you to change your flights these days, especially if you booked a refundable fare or are willing to pay some additional fees. But when you book through a third-party website like Amex Travel, you may get mixed messages regarding which company you should contact if you need to change your travel plans.

During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, many travelers ping-ponged back and forth between customer service representatives at the airline that canceled their flight home, as well as those from the third-party OTA that sold them their ticket.

To get the most from the Amex Travel Portal, you'll need a card that earns American Express Membership Rewards points . There are a number of options including premium cards, small business credit cards, and cards with a low or no annual fee.

Personal cards that earn Amex Membership Rewards points include:

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express (read our Amex Platinum card review )
  • American Express® Gold Card (read our Amex Gold card review )
  • American Express® Green Card (read our Amex Green card review )
  • Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card (read our Amex EveryDay Preferred card review )
  • Amex EveryDay® Credit Card (read our Amex EveryDay card review )

Small business Amex Membership Rewards cards include:

  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (read our Amex Business Platinum card review )
  • American Express® Business Gold Card (read our Amex Business Gold card review )
  • The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (read our Amex Blue Business Plus card review )

Now let's take a look at each part of the Amex Travel portal.

Book flights through Amex Travel

To get started, navigate to American Express Travel and click the "Flights" tab on the homepage, then enter your departure airport, destination, travel dates, and the number of passengers. You'll also select whether you want a round-trip or one-way flight, class of service, and if you prefer non-stop flights.

On the next page, you'll see a list of flight options with a set of filters on the left side of the screen. You can filter based on the number of stops, departure and arrival time, airline, fare type, and any available benefits from your cards.

American Express has a preferred relationship with Delta, so you'll see Delta flights listed first when they're available. Further down the list, flights are arranged by price, starting with the lowest. Next to each option, you'll see how many bonus points you'll earn and any other perks you'll receive.

For example, I have Amex Platinum Card and see a note that says I can enter the Delta Sky Club or Centurion Lounge when I fly out of LaGuardia in New York. The search results also remind me that Delta is a featured airline and I'll earn 5x points on my booking.

The fares you'll see are often the same as what you'll find on other websites, including booking directly with the airline. Sometimes they're an extra few dollars so it's worth double-checking, but for the most part, they're similar.

Note that Amex normally charges a fee of $6.99 per domestic ticket and $10.99 per international ticket you book through the website. This fee is waived if you have a Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card. You can purchase a maximum of nine tickets per transaction.

Remember that you'll still earn miles and have your airline elite status recognized when you fly as long as your frequent flyer number is attached to your reservation when you book through a third-party OTA. If you forget, you can always add it through the airline later on.

Note that you will not see budget airlines listed on AmexTravel.com. That includes popular options like Norwegian, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country, and others. Because of this, there may be cheaper options available that aren't displayed, so it's worth double-checking directly if you have a low-cost airline you like to fly.

Book with cash, points, or a combination of both — or set up a Buy Now, Pay Later plan

If you have a Membership Rewards-earning card, you can use your points to partially or completely pay for travel on the Amex Travel portal, including flights, hotels, cruises, and car rentals.

You can also choose to pay entirely with your Amex card, and there's a new payment option. Amex personal cardholders now have the choice, at checkout, to pay for their flight over time with Plan It — Amex's buy now, pay later feature.

Plan It is an existing program, but the ability to set up a payment plan directly at checkout with Amex Travel is brand new. Cardholders can create up to three plans to pay for flight purchases of $100 or more in monthly installments with a fixed monthly fee and no interest.

You'll see each option on the final payment screen: select to use all points, all cash, a combination of both, or set up monthly installments with Plan It.

Note that when you use points and cash, you must redeem a minimum of 5,000 points. Each point is worth 1 cent toward airfare, so this comes to at least $50 toward your trip.

No matter how you pay, you'll be able to earn miles and credit toward elite status when you fly because they're all treated as cash bookings by the airlines.

If you have Amex Business Platinum Card and choose to use points to pay for your flights, you'll receive 35% of your points back as a rebate for economy fares on your selected airline , up to 500,000 points per calendar year. You'll get this same rebate on business or first-class flights on any airline as well.

Insider Fares displayed on the Amex Travel Portal

Flights with Insider Fares are an exception to the rules above, which are directly discounted exclusively for Amex customers.

Your points are worth a little more than 1 cent each on Insider Fares, and the exact value varies based on the flight. These fares are only available with points bookings, and you must use your Membership Rewards points to cover the entire fare cost. As a result, you won't see these fares in the Amex Travel portal if you don't have enough points to cover the flight.

Don't forget the International Airline Program if you have a Platinum Card

If you have Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card, you also have access to the International Airline Program , which offers lower fares on premium-class international travel. More than 25 airlines participate in the program, and savings can be substantial compared to published fares.

You can buy discounted fares in premium economy, business, or first-class through this program. The exact savings you'll get varies based on the airline and route, but can often be several hundreds of dollars. That's a great deal if you're someone who books paid travel to fly internationally.

Read more: You can transfer Amex points to 22 loyalty programs to book travel, from first class to Japan on ANA to hotel stays with Hilton

You can cover much of the card's annual fee with the savings from just one well-priced booking. There's also no limit to how much you can save, or how often you can take advantage of the lower fares offered here.

Book hotels through Amex Travel

Booking a hotel stay functions much the same as the flight booking process. Make sure the "Hotels" tab is selected, then enter your trip details.

Again, you have the opportunity to use cash, points, or a combination of both to pay for your stay (the Plan It feature isn't available through Amex Travel for hotel bookings). Prices are usually similar to booking directly, but some of the big-chain hotels cost a few dollars more, presumably because Amex is adding their commission to the cost.

An important reminder: There is one major caveat to booking hotels through American Express Travel, or any third-party booking site for that matter. You will not earn hotel points or elite status credit and likely will not have your elite status recognized when you book through the portal. If you care about earning points and elite status, you should avoid booking through third-party sites like this one.

However, if you're booking an independent or boutique hotel that isn't part of any rewards programs or like the simplicity of booking this way, this isn't an issue. And sometimes the hotel you choose is based on location or other personal preferences.

Book with Fine Hotels & Resorts: Amex Travel's luxury hotel program

What is amex fine hotels & resorts.

The Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts (FHR) program offers select American Express card members exclusive benefits at over 1,400 hand-picked luxury properties. The list is vetted and periodically reviewed to ensure every hotel and resort meets Amex's exacting standards. American Express isn't the only credit card issuer to curate a luxury hotel booking program , but Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts sets the standard among them.

Properties are added to and (occasionally) removed from the Fine Hotels and Resorts program over time, so the list isn't static. You'll find far-flung tropical beach escapes, stately mountain ski lodges, lavish city digs, and tranquil countryside retreats in dozens of countries worldwide. These properties range from high-end to very high-end, with many charging thousands of dollars per night. In short, Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts isn't a good fit for traveling on a tight budget, but not all prices are stratospheric, and the program benefits can elevate any stay regardless of cost.

Who can book American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts stays?

To book an Amex FHR stay, you must have an The Platinum Card® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card® from American Express , or  Centurion Card (also known as the Black Card). Different versions of the Platinum card are all eligible, including co-branded cards from Charles Schwab and Morgan Stanley. These are all premium cards that carry hefty annual fees in exchange for high-end benefits .

You must use your eligible card to book your stay, and payment must be made in the primary card member's name. That means you generally can't book Fine Hotels and Resorts stays for other people, though you can book additional rooms for your party.

You can book online through the landing page for Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts or by searching for hotels at American Express Travel and limiting the results to Fine Hotels and Resorts properties. You can also book over the phone by calling the number on the back of your card.

Note that Amex also curates a second list of properties called The Hotel Collection, which is available to those with the American Express® Gold Card and American Express® Business Gold Card , as well as to Platinum and Centurion cardholders. The Hotel Collection is a step down from the Fine Hotels and Resorts program, but still offers high quality and valuable benefits.

Maximizing Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts

There are multiple benefits of booking with American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts. People with the Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card have access to the Fine Hotels & Resorts program , which is a collection of over 1,000 hotels worldwide that offer special perks when booking through Amex, including:

  • Noon check-in when available
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout when available

Daily breakfast for two

  • Room upgrade upon arrival when available

Complimentary Wi-Fi

  • Experience credits, like property credits to use at a spa, dining credits, or another unique amenity (often worth $100 or more)

Exact benefits vary by property and can add serious value to your booking.

I've used this benefit a couple of times and was pleased by how seriously the hotels considered their part in the program. Having late checkout at 4 p.m. can essentially add an extra day to your stay, and comes in handy when you have a late flight. And early check-in can help you get settled sooner if you have a morning arrival.

Again, you likely won't earn points and elite status if the hotel has its own rewards program. Some people report earning hotel points despite booking through Amex, but it's not guaranteed and I wouldn't count on it.

That said, the perks you get can be substantial, so it's worth considering on a case-by-case basis whether you want to earn hotel points or use Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts. You can use your benefits to book up to three rooms at a time, and you'll be able to use your perks on all of them.

Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts Benefits

Cardholders who book through American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts get a set of explicit core benefits, some guaranteed and consistent across the whole portfolio, and others that depend on availability and vary from one property to the next.

Room upgrade upon arrival

When you check in for a stay booked through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts, you're eligible for an upgrade to a higher-category room or one with a better view in the same category. Upgrades depend on availability, so you're more likely to be offered one when demand is low — don't expect to get bumped from a standard room to the presidential suite when you show up at a busy resort on a holiday weekend.

Upgrades have the most upside of Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts benefits, but also the greatest variance. The distinctions between hotel room categories are often murky, so an "upgrade" sometimes means getting a room that was recently renovated (for better or worse) or one with an extra amenity you may not care about.

On the other hand, upgrades are not limited to a single category, so you very well could end up in that presidential suite with some good fortune and timing. If you're willing to risk it, you can try to game the upgrade benefit by identifying the room categories at your property and booking one category below the room you really want. Not all room categories are eligible for upgrades, so call ahead if you need clarification.

Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts describes this benefit as a complimentary breakfast for up to two people per room, which is generally accurate. However, the benefit terms clarify that the breakfast is valued at a minimum of $60 per room per day. You may be charged for purchases exceeding that amount, so breakfast isn't strictly "complimentary" depending on menu prices and how much you order.

The daily breakfast benefit is another that varies widely between properties. Some offer a specific complimentary option in one restaurant (like a breakfast buffet). Others offer a range of specific complimentary options in one or more venues, and some simply offer daily statement credits to offset qualifying on-property charges up to the preset amount, even covering multiple transactions.

If this makes the benefit sound unpredictable, don't worry. In my experience, daily breakfast benefit options have always been explained clearly at check-in for Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts stays.

Experience credit

When you book at an Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts property, you're guaranteed an experience credit of at least $100 toward eligible on-property charges. The amount and nature of the experience credit are clearly indicated for each property when you book.

The benefit is most commonly provided as a statement credit to offset food and beverage charges, spa services, or any purchases billed to your room. However, in some cases, it comes in the form of a specific experience (like a complimentary meal or massage) rather than a credit. The baseline value is $100, but you'll often receive more. I've seen on-property credits offered up to $200, and some of the experiential options have sticker prices well beyond that amount.

You're eligible for the experience credit regardless of how long you stay — even a single night qualifies. That makes it an exceptional value for shorter stays.

Early check-in and late check-out

While the benefits above provide fairly well-defined value, these two are harder to quantify. Nonetheless, early check-in and late check-out are useful in the right conditions, like when you have a morning arrival or evening departure.

Early check-in at Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts starts at noon and is subject to availability; if your room is unavailable, then you'll have to wait until it's ready. Regardless of the official early check-in time, some hotels will accommodate you before noon if they can.

Unlike early check-in, the late 4 p.m. checkout is guaranteed. In my experience, Fine Hotels and Resorts properties are proactive about honoring this benefit, so you shouldn't have to worry about your key demagnetizing prematurely or hotel staff entering the room while you're still in it.

The final core benefit of the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program is free Wi-Fi, which is guaranteed even if the property normally charges for it. At properties where Wi-Fi charges are folded into another mandatory fee (like a resort fee), a daily credit will be applied to your bill at checkout to offset the cost.

Other benefits of booking with American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts

Aside from the core benefits listed above, there are other perks of booking with the Fine Hotels and Resorts program, some more tangible than others.

First, Amex maintains a list of special offers available at select properties. These include complimentary nights (like a free fourth night), discounts on nightly room rates, on-property credits, and more, all provided in addition to the core benefits. Special offers show up in standard Fine Hotels and Resorts searches, so you don't have to browse the linked page to find them.

Next, Fine Hotels and Resorts bookings are eligible for the Amex Amex Platinum Card's up to $200 annual hotel credit (minimum two-night stay), so you can stack that discount on top of the other benefits you receive. You'll also earn 5 points per dollar for booking Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts stays with your Amex Platinum Card.

Finally, you may receive an elevated level of service when you check in as a Fine Hotels and Resorts guest. That has consistently been my experience, especially comparing stays at a single property booked through Amex versus other channels. The differences in service are subtle and hard to define, but palpable.

Important considerations for booking with American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts

The terms and conditions of the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program are mostly benign to cardholders, but there are a few potential pitfalls and other details to keep in mind.

Reservations are mostly prepaid

When you book through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts, you typically pay for room charges and taxes up front, while additional charges (like resort fees and incidentals) are paid at the property. You can sometimes opt to put down a deposit rather than prepay the entire reservation. Either way, bookings are mostly cancelable, but Amex does not impose a universal cancellation policy, so keep yourself out of trouble by reading the hotel's cancellation policy in the listing before you book.

Benefits are non-transferable

All perks and credits must be used during your stay (i.e., prior to checkout). You can't save or bank them for later, so use them or lose them.

Back-to-back stays count as one

If you or your party book separate stays at the same property within a 24-hour period, it will be considered a single stay and only eligible for one set of Fine Hotels and Resorts benefits. In other words, you can't rack up multiple experience credits by making separate reservations on consecutive nights at the same property.

Benefits apply to multiple rooms

You can book up to three rooms for an Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts stay, and all three are eligible for the full slate of benefits. That adds a lot of value to the program for those traveling in a group.

You must present a valid Amex card in your name at check-in

In addition to booking Fine Hotels and Resorts stays with an eligible American Express card, you must present a valid Amex card at check-in to cover incidentals. However, the card you check in with doesn't have to be the one you used to make your reservation. If you canceled your Amex Platinum Card or simply forgot to bring it, for example, you could provide another Amex card. The terms say the card you present must be in the name of the primary guest, but my wife and I had no trouble presenting my Amex card at check-in for a reservation in her name.

Hotel rewards and elite benefits are not guaranteed

Many hotels offer rewards and elite benefits only when you book directly. As a result, booking through a third party like Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts may cause you to miss out on those perks. From my own experience and anecdotal evidence, reward outcomes are unpredictable. I've sometimes earned rewards automatically, sometimes earned them upon request, and sometimes been denied. Case in point: The Bellagio Las Vegas honored my MGM status and waived resort fees for one Fine Hotels and Resorts stay, but flatly refused to do so for another.

You can pay with points, but you shouldn't

Amex lets you redeem Membership Rewards points  for Fine Hotels and Resorts stays, but the redemption rate is only 1 cent per point. That's far below our average valuation of 1.8 cents for Amex points , so save your points for transfers to airline and hotel partners (or other award redemptions that provide a better return).

Leveraging The Hotel Collection for additional value

If you have Amex Platinum Card, Amex Business Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, or Amex Business Gold Card, you can also access the Hotel Collection, which also offers room upgrades and a $100 onsite credit for dining, spa, or resort activities at 600+ hotels.

The Hotel Collection is entirely separate from Fine Hotels and Resorts, and has different hotels that participate with minimal overlap. When you book through Amex, Platinum cardmembers will earn 5x points per dollar on prepaid bookings, and Gold cardmembers will earn 2x points.

You can pay with cash at the time of booking or at hotel checkout after your stay. Or you can pay with points, or a combination of points and cash on prepaid bookings only. And there's the same guidance about earning hotel points here, too. You might decide you'd rather have the $100 hotel credit rather than points, depending on the hotel.

To use this benefit, you must book a minimum stay of two nights, and can't book consecutive stays within 24 hours of each other. This benefit is available for up to three rooms per stay. So if you book three rooms at the same time, you can get a total onsite credit of $300 between three rooms maximum.

Book Flight + Hotel packages through American Express Travel

The point of booking a vacation package is usually to save money, take advantage of a promotion, simplify the booking process, or all of these. You can search for a flight and hotel, then pay one price for everything.

Amex doesn't give you a breakdown of how much the flights and rooms cost, and only shows savings on selected hotels. However, when you search for flights and hotels individually and compare the prices, you'll find the savings are often hundreds of dollars, especially on longer trips.

To book, select the "Flight + Hotel" tab and enter where you want to go, along with the number of travelers and how many rooms you want to reserve.

You'll see a list of hotels, along with the price per person, total price, and cost if you want to pay for the trip with your Membership Rewards points. Select the hotel you want to stay at, then you'll see a list of flight options. The cheapest flights are already included in the price, but you can select alternate flights for an upcharge.

Likewise, the cheapest room options are displayed in the base price, but you can pay more for a different room, like a mountain or beach view, a double or king room, or a suite, depending on what's available at the hotel you select.

I priced out a couple of packages. For the first, I didn't find any notable differences. Booking flights and hotel separately cost nearly the same. But for another, the savings were substantial even though they weren't explicitly stated on the Amex Travel portal. It's worthwhile to compare, especially if you're interested in earning points if the hotel participates in a loyalty program. Otherwise, prices are comparable or better in most cases.

Similar to booking airfare separately, for each airline ticket you purchase as part of a package, you'll pay $6.99 per domestic ticket and $10.99 per international ticket. This fee is waived if you have a Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card. You can purchase a maximum of nine tickets per transaction.

Personal and business Platinum cardholders will earn 5x points on their package, and other Membership Rewards cards earn 2x points.

Book car rentals through the Amex Travel Portal

You can also rent cars through American Express Travel. Just type in the city or airport where you want to pick up a car and the dates and times you'll need it under the "Cars" tab.

You'll see a list of your options starting with the lowest price. At a glance, you can see the price per day, total price, and what's included with the car. On the left side, you can add filters for the car type, price, rental car company, and any special features you're looking for (like an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive).

Prices are usually the same or comparable to other booking sites or booking directly. However, I always check a couple of different places to make sure I'm getting the best deal. It's worth comparing, especially if you're looking to add a second driver to the reservation, or need to drop the car off later in the day. I've found different sites can vary a lot in pricing, so recommend shopping around.

You can use cash, points, or a combination to pay for prepaid rentals, or use cash to pay at the counter.

When you use your Membership Rewards card to pay for your rental, you'll earn 2x points.

Book cruises with American Express Travel

You're able to book a cruise on most of the popular cruise lines around the world through American Express Travel under the "Cruises" tab on the homepage. I found the prices were similar to other booking sites with the main difference being the specific promotions, like onboard credits or prepaid gratuities. Certain websites also run sales, so it's worth shopping around if you're not committed to a particular route or ship.

After you enter where you want to go and how many nights you'd like to spend on the water, you're taken to a list of results, along with a prominent section for special offers, which are mostly onboard credits. This is worth exploring to get some ideas if you're open.

And if you have Amex Platinum Card or Amex Business Platinum Card, you can also take advantage of the Cruise Privileges program, which partners with several big-name cruise lines. When you book through Amex Travel, you'll receive an onboard stateroom credit worth up to $100 to $300, and another exclusive amenity that varies by cruise line like premium wine or extra food options.

If you have the Amex Green Card, you'll earn 3x points per dollar spent booking your cruise through Amex Travel. All other Membership Rewards-earning cards earn 2x points.
