Guide to Adaptive Cruise Control

How this convenience feature works to reduce your stress on long drives

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is like traditional cruise control, but smarter. ACC systems allow you to set a desired speed until your vehicle encounters slower-moving traffic. Then it will brake to maintain a set distance from the car ahead. Once the traffic starts moving again or if there is no longer a car in the lane ahead, ACC will accelerate to resume the previous set speed. Although ACC systems may take some getting used to, our survey respondents told us they appreciated the stress relief the feature brings.

“I use the feature mostly on the freeway and in stop-and-go traffic. I find it reduces tension and fatigue,” wrote a 2020 Subaru Outback owner. A 2018 Audi Q5 driver agreed. “It is so nice to just set it and let the car worry about the traffic,” they told CR.

The systems use lasers, radar, cameras, or a combination of those. If traffic slows to a stop, most ACC systems will bring the car to a complete stop, then bring it back up to speed when traffic gets going again. Others work only within certain speeds and/or might not start to accelerate automatically.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC): Cruise control that also assists with acceleration and/or braking to maintain a driver-selected gap to the vehicle in front. Some systems can come to a stop and continue while others cannot. If the car comes to a full stop, you may have to press the accelerator or a button on the steering wheel to start moving again.

Not all systems work at low speeds, so drivers who plan to use ACC in slow traffic should check the limitations of any system they plan to buy. These particular systems will often have the words “traffic jam” or “stop and go” in their name.

These features are usually activated using a button on the steering wheel with the image of a car next to a speedometer with an arrow pointing at it. A conventional cruise control system does not automatically keep a set distance away from the car in front, and it is indicated by a similar logo without the car next to the speedometer. A tip to know if your car has adaptive cruise control or regular cruise control is to look for the “gap distance” button, which usually shows a symbol of a car with horizontal distance bars in front. This button will determine how much space your car leaves between its front bumper and the rear of the car it is following.

In our most recent survey, we asked CR members to rate their experiences with the advanced safety and driver assistance systems on their model-year 2017 to 2022 cars. Respondents answered questions about their satisfaction with the systems. The survey covered about 47,000 vehicles. Most respondents told us they were “very satisfied” with ACC. Satisfaction was higher for older drivers.

What to Look For in an Adaptive Cruise Control System

Every ACC system works slightly differently, says Kelly Funkhouser, manager for vehicle technology at CR. Some do a better job than others at recognizing merging traffic and automatically apply the brakes, while others wait too long to slow your car, requiring the driver to take control—especially when a vehicle in front of you cuts you off with a close merge.

“Most ACC systems can only be set to speeds above 20 mph but will slow the vehicle to speeds below that in stop-and-go traffic,” she says. “There are a few systems out there that don’t bring the car all the way to a stop but instead just shut off at low speeds. That can be dangerous when you’re traveling behind another slowing vehicle.” She recommends reading the automaker’s website closely and learning about the speed ranges before using ACC while on your test drive.

ACC is meant for convenience, not as a replacement for an alert driver, Funkhouser says. So don’t use adaptive cruise control as an excuse to get distracted. “Just because the car is controlling your speed doesn’t mean that you can check out,” she says. “These systems do not do well at detecting or slowing for vehicles ahead if you approach them at a high rate of speed. The driver should always be monitoring the surrounding traffic and looking ahead for potential hazards.”

In a market where safety is often a central selling point, manufacturers must boost the availability of the best safety features to maintain a competitive edge. As such, buyers on a budget now have a rich selection of affordable cars to choose from that either come standard with or offer ACC as an option.

Adaptive cruise control builds on the basic cruise control technology that has been around for decades, by using sensors and modern computing to modulate your car’s speed while accounting for the speed of the car ahead of you. While you still set a speed as normal, your car can slow down and speed up to maintain distance between you and that car. Some systems can even slow your car to a stop and get you moving again – a feature that’s highly appealing to drivers who spend a lot of time in bumper-to-bumper traffic on congested highways.

The Kia Forte , like many models in Kia's lineup, is feature rich and has a reasonable price. It is the winner of our 2020 Best Compact Car for the Money award. However, to outfit your Forte with Smart Cruise Control (Kia’s name for ACC), you’ll need to step up to the top-tier $22,490 GT trim and add the $2,200 GT2 Package. Among a full suite of safety features, the GT2 package also includes goodies like a premium audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a wireless phone charger.

22) 2020 Subaru Forester

Price W/ Adaptive Cruise Control: $24,495 | USN Overall Score: 7.8/10

Redesigned last year, the current generation Forester benefits from Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety tech as standard across all trim levels, including the $24,495 base trim. Alongside adaptive cruise control, EyeSight also includes other popular features like automatic pre-collision braking and lane departure prevention. The availability of these features, as well as good crash test ratings, earned this compact SUV a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

21) 2020 Ford Fusion

Price W/ Adaptive Cruise Control: $24,460 | USN Overall Score: 8.1/10

Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of active safety features comes standard in the full range of Fusion trims, including the base S model. However, it does not include adaptive cruise control. To get ACC, you need to equip your Fusion with the confusingly named Co-Pilot 360 Assist Package which costs an additional $1,290. The Fusion's ACC system includes stop-and-go functionality so drivers can turn the system on and let the car manage the throttle and braking even in severe congestion on the highway. Along with a range of other safety features that come standard on all trims, the Fusion boasts a four out of five reliability rating, which is well above average for the auto industry.

As a stalwart of the midsize car class , one of the many ways the Toyota Camry has remained competitive is by offering a rich list of standard safety features. Adaptive cruise control, along with much more of the latest tech, is equipped on all trims, ranging from the base L to the top-tier XSE. An extensive suite of driver assistance aids is one of the reasons the Camry earned our 2020 Best Midsize Car for Families award. Subaru’s EyeSight safety package (which includes adaptive cruise control) comes standard on all Impreza models, so long as the car is outfitted with a CVT automatic transmission. So while you’ll have to pay a little extra, you’re getting a range of safety features in addition to the automatic transmission. Other EyeSight features include automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist.

The EX trim carries a $2,000 premium over a base LX model. Nonetheless, since the Fit is budget-friendly across its entire trim range, a top-tier Fit EX is still our second most affordable car that you can get with adaptive cruise control. Topping our list is the Nissan Versa , which was just given a full redesign for the 2020 model year. Adaptive cruise control is available as an option on a top Trim SR model, as part of the Convenience Package. The SR trim costs $18,240, and the Convenience Package costs an additional $300. If you choose the add on, you’ll be getting heated seats along with ACC. At the end of the day, the Versa is one of the most affordable new cars you can buy. Even though it’s locked away in the top trim, if you want adaptive cruise control, you’ll spend less to get it in the Nissan Versa than you will with any other model.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is similar to standard cruise control in that it maintains a driver's preset speed once engaged. But unlike basic cruise control, ACC also automatically adjusts a car's speed based on traffic conditions.

For example, if the car in front of you slows, the system will automatically engage the car’s brakes to slow your speed and maintain a safe distance between you and the car ahead. Once the car in front of you speeds up, the system will resume the set speed.

While not federally mandated, most new cars come with ACC technology.

ACC is an advanced-driver assistance system, or ADAS. ADAS use in-vehicle technological features to help increase safety while driving. Other ADAS technologies include antilock brakes, lane departure warning and forward collision warning, among others. Some ADAS technologies are paired together in some newer vehicles, but this isn't always the case.

How does adaptive cruise control work?

ACC systems use cameras, sensors and radar technology — or a combination of the three — to monitor the distance between your car and the car in front of you. This technology also automatically accelerates or slows your car, based on your settings and the speed limit.

You can set your speed and following distance, or how much space you want between the car in front of you and your car, with controls typically located on the steering wheel. ACC systems automatically keep your car at the preset speed and distance unless traffic ahead slows or you brake. You can reset your speed and distance at any time while driving.

What to know about adaptive cruise control

Adaptive cruise control systems are also often referred to as active cruise control, dynamic cruise control, radar cruise control and intelligent cruise control, among other names. And like its names, the specifics of how the system functions can also vary between vehicle makes and models.

For example, most ACC systems can bring your car to a complete stop if traffic around you stops, then accelerate once traffic picks up again. Other systems, however, don't have this capability or may not work below certain speeds.

Some ACC systems can anticipate curves and adjust a car’s speed when it's approaching a curve. However, some ACC systems may not be able to anticipate traffic on curving roads as well as they would on straight ones, and therefore may not be able to adjust a car’s speed accordingly.

Like similar advanced safety features that use cameras and sensors, ACC functionality can be affected by weather conditions like rain or snow, which means that drivers should remain vigilant even when the system is activated.

Once a feature exclusive to high-end luxury models, adaptive cruise control has trickled down into a wide assortment of vehicles and has become a must-have feature for many car shoppers. Like regular cruise control, it will keep the vehicle at a set speed; unlike regular cruise control, adaptive cruise control will tell the vehicle to brake as it comes up behind another and will correspondingly follow at a safe distance. Moreover, should you find yourself facing an open lane again, the system will tell the car to accelerate back up to the desired speed without your involvement.

All adaptive cruise control systems work at highway speeds, but many examples are capable of low-speed operation, with some even able to manage acceleration and braking through stop-and-go traffic. The best of the lot provide steering assistance as well.

2023 Hyundai Sonata

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata is a versatile model, offering several powertrain options to suit different needs, including a 290-hp turbo four in the $36,000 N-Line trim and a 192-hp hybrid setup for as little as $29,000. Hyundai is generous with its safety tech on this midsize sedan, providing every trim level with not only stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but also blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, driver-attention warning, lane keeping and centering, and collision-avoidance assistance.

2024 Audi A4

Buyers of the 2024 Audi A4 get adaptive cruise control as standard equipment on the automaker's compact sedan. The entry-level 2024 Audi A4 costs about $42,000 with 201 horsepower in 40 TFSI spec and $44,000 with the 261-hp 45 TFSI. Alternatively, you could choose a mid-level Premium Plus model — with an impressive Bang & Olufsen sound system and 360-degree camera as standard — and remain just under budget.

2023 Acura Integra

The 2023 Acura Integra is a reboot of the brand's classic sports car, but now with a 200-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and, on the $38,000 A-Spec with Technology model, an available six-speed manual transmission. All trim levels come with an impressive array of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, but as you might imagine, the manual transmission car can't manage the stop-and-go operation of the CVT-equipped Integras. Instead, its adaptive cruise control system disengages when the speed drops below 22 mph.

2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The 2023 Toyota Corolla hatchback, starting at $24,000, offers all the value, reliability, and quality of its venerable compact sedan sibling plus a bit more cargo space. The entire Corolla lineup — even the performance-oriented, manual-transmission-equipped, 300-hp GR model — comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. That comprehensive tech suite includes adaptive cruise, lane keeping, collision-prevention tech, lane-departure alert with steering assistance, road-sign detection, and automatic high-beams. Unfortunately, Toyota's base adaptive cruise control system doesn't work at low speed.

2023 Subaru Forester

The 2023 Subaru Forester provides everything drivers expect from the brand: all-wheel drive (AWD), trail-friendly ground clearance, and ample cargo space. It also includes Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance suite with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. It's reasonably priced, too, with 2023 Subaru Forester models starting around $28,000 and topping out around $38,000.

2023 Mazda CX-30

Mazda provides stop-and-go adaptive cruise control as standard equipment on its subcompact crossover. The cost of entry is about $24,000, but if you want your 2023 Mazda CX-30 to provide lane-centering assistance while adaptive cruise control is active, you'll need to choose the range-topping $37,000 CX-30 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus model, as it's the only one with traffic-jam assist.

2024 Kia Carnival

Is it an SUV? A minivan? A multipurpose vehicle, as Kia likes to call it? Categorize it however you want; the 2024 Kia Carnival is an attractive option for families. The entry-level trims come with a litany of driver-assistance tech, but adaptive cruise is included as standard equipment starting at the mid-level $40,000 EX trim and up. Kia's adaptive cruise control system works in stop-and-go traffic as well as at highway speed.

2023 Honda Ridgeline

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline may not have the towing capacity or off-road credentials of some midsize pickup trucks, but its unibody construction, spacious cabin, and dual-action tailgate make it a great option for those who want to split the difference between an SUV and a truck. All Ridgeline trims include adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow as part of the Honda Sensing driver-assistance suite. 2024 BMW 2 Series

BMW's smallest car is available in sporty two-door Coupe or four-door Gran Coupe form. No matter how many doors your 2024 BMW 2 Series has, adaptive cruise control is available for about $500 as a standalone option. Though not as capable as the system available on the more expensive 3 Series — that system supports stop-and-go with partial steering — the 2 Series' Active Cruise Control supports what BMW calls limited-force automated braking.

The adaptive cruise control available on the BMW 2 Series is designed to handle the more gradual changes in traffic flow found on many highways, but not the stop-and-go slog found on some commutes. No matter the form, either 2 Series with adaptive cruise control comes in well below the price cap, with Coupes starting around $40,000 and four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe models starting around $42,000.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

The IQ.Drive suite of driver-assistance technologies is included as standard equipment on every 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 . That means the electric crossover gets not only adaptive cruise control, but also blind-spot monitoring and forward- as well as rear-collision prevention with automatic emergency braking. The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro, which includes AWD and the longer-range battery, starts around $49,000.

Alongside the excellent crash safety, all Mazda CX-30 SUVs have adaptive cruise control to help the driver maintain a constant distance between them and the car ahead.

#4 Nissan Kicks

The Kicks is the most affordable way to own a Nissan SUV, but it still comes with many standard driver aids and tech features.

Nissan Kicks subcompacts have had cruise control among its standard features since it appeared in 2018.

However, they didn’t get the more-advanced adaptive cruise control until 2021, even if the system was only available in the upper trim levels.

#5 Subaru Crosstrek

SUV buyers after an affordable extra-small SUV with AWD and above-average ground clearance for enhanced off-road capability should opt for Subaru Crosstrek – a plug-in-hybrid variant is available for some all-electric range and lower fuel consumption.

Those intending to drive long distances with the Subaru Crosstrek will find the available adaptive cruise control (ACC) handy, although it’s only available in the pricier trims – ACC became standard for 2023 and beyond.

But worry not, as all used Crosstrek base models have at least the conventional cruise control system.

#6 Hyundai Kona

This little crossover is a compelling and exciting choice, with sharp handling and plenty of features for the money.

Although adaptive cruise control is only available if you spend more for a higher trim, Hyundai Kona standard models have cruise control, regardless of the production year.

The higher-performing Kona N variant is an excellent choice for enthusiasts wanting more thrills from their little SUV.

#7 Kia Soul

For such beginner-friendly pricing, the Kia Soul comes loaded with many technology features and a boxy form that offers a roomy interior.

Since its 2010 debut, Kia Soul subcompacts have had cruise control as standard.

Still, you can spend slightly more to get the optional adaptive cruise control, so driving your Kia Soul in heavy traffic doesn’t have to be tiring.

#8 Kia Seltos

Slightly larger than the Soul but still a subcompact, Kia Seltos appeals with its distinctive styling, upscale interior, and roomy cargo area.

The Kia Seltos SUVs have had adaptive cruise control in the upper trims since 2021, a handy addition as the SUV is a comfortable cruiser.

#9 Chevrolet Trailblazer

The Trailblazer is slightly larger than the Trax in Chevrolet’s SUV lineup, with all-around good performances for a subcompact crossover.

It doesn’t quite match rivals’ offerings, however; the Chevy Trailblazer only has cruise control in selected trim levels of most model years.

No Chevy Trailblazer has the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

As one of the best-selling small SUVs, Toyota RAV4 has had adaptive cruise control as part of its standard-feature list since 2017.

And if you opt for a pre-2017 used RAV4, you still get the cruise control system as standard equipment – as long as it isn’t older than 2004.

#12 Honda CR-V

The super-popular Honda CR-V, a long-time rival to the Toyota RAV4 in the small SUV class, has had adaptive cruise control since 2019.

Opting for an older model with a smaller budget will still net you the conventional cruise control, so long as you choose one manufactured between 2001 and 2018.

#13 Mazda CX-5

Like all Mazdas, you can count on the CX-5 compact SUV to handle and steer like a sporty vehicle.

Besides a fun-to-drive nature, it is a quiet highway cruiser with an upscale cabin that rivals pricier SUVs.

Adaptive cruise control became available in the Mazda CX-5 in 2016, although the Japanese marque made it standard from 2019 onwards.

Shoppers on modest budgets targeting a 2013 to 2015 CX-5 will still find a cruise control system to help in the highway drives.

The similar-size newer Mazda CX-50 brings similar strong suits to the table, including adaptive cruise control.

#14 Nissan Rogue

If the budget permits, opting for a 2021 or newer Rogue SUV is wise, as it offers significant improvements over its predecessors in ride comfort and interior quality.

Crucially, Nissan Rogue’s available-feature list includes adaptive cruise control (2018 or newer), a version that can slow down the vehicle for the road curves ahead.

Otherwise, the more-basic cruise control will suffice for most buyers buying older Rogue models.

#15 Kia Sorento

Kia Sorento is a small crossover with three rows of seats.

2017 and newer Kia Sorento SUVs have adaptive cruise control in the more expensive trims and basic cruise control in the rest; pre-2017 models still get cruise control.

If a long warranty appeals, besides having many features at an attractive price, the small Hyundai Tucson , Kia Sportage , and Kia Niro deliver similar value – all three have cruise control or a more-advanced adaptive system (depending on the model year).

Midsize SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

Available with a gasoline-only or hybrid powertrain, the three-row midsize Toyota Highlander has had adaptive cruise control since 2017, a useful addition considering the SUV’s comfortable and quiet ride.

2016 and older ones had the conventional cruise control system, helping to reduce the stress of driving long journeys.

Toyota’s other midsize SUVs with cruise control include the two-row Venza and 4Runner.

#17 Honda Passport

The Honda Passport is a desirable two-row midsize SUV with a powerful engine and spacious interior to haul the family comfortably on long drives.

Besides, its athleticism is commendable for a midsize, with nicely weighted steering that lends responsiveness around turns.

Opt for a 2019 or newer Honda Passport and get adaptive cruise control as standard equipment.

The second-generation Passport made before 2003 only had the cruise control system.

Cruise control is a great extra to have if you do regular motorway journeys, while adaptive cruise control arguably makes even more sense.

What is cruise control? Cruise control is an electronic system that automatically regulates a car's speed without the driver having to keep their foot on the accelerator. That's the simple answer, but today car manufacturers are adding ever-more advanced cruise control systems to their models, all designed to make driving easier and safer, while many of the newer technologies are on the first tentative steps towards autonomous vehicles .

Once upon a time, cruise control was the preserve of high-end luxury cars, but as the technology has become more affordable, car makers have rolled it out on more mainstream models. Today, you can get it on even the smallest city cars , while other models get a proprietary speed limited system that requires a bit more input from the driver.

Elsewhere, the progress of technology means that car makers have been able to develop adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems that can vary a car's speed according to traffic, while the most advanced systems are on the steps towards fully autonomous driving.

Here we explain how cruise control works and break down the different kinds of system on offer, highlighting their advantages and limitations, so you can decide if it's an option that's worth ticking on your next new car purchase.

Cruise control history

Cruise control can trace its origins back to the 17th and 18th century, when engineers developed 'speed control' systems for steam engines. These mechanical systems were adapted by some early automobile makers at the start of the 20th century, although the predecessor to modern cruise control didn't appear until the 1950s.

The first car to feature cruise control was a 1958 Imperial, which was Chrysler's luxury division. Called 'Auto-pilot', the system was mechanical and was connected to the engine propshaft. It had a dial on the dashboard to preselect a speed and an electric motor that adjusted throttle position to maintain it.

US firm American Motors produced a budget version of cruise control for its automatic cars in 1965, but cruise control really took off in the US during the oil crisis of 1973. Manufacturers had developed electronic cruise control systems by this time, and these makers promoted the benefits of the system as it delivered constant throttle inputs, rather than the erratic flexing of the driver's right foot for improved fuel economy.

Cruise control found popularity in the US first because of that nation's fondness of automatic gearboxes, long travelling distances and the relatively straight and wide highway network. In Europe, cruise control took a little longer to gain a foothold, but like the US, it first appeared on high-end luxury cars before filtering its way down to more mainstream models.

The first adaptive cruise control (ACC) system appeared in Japan in the early 1990s, although the first systems simply warned the driver of slower traffic ahead, and didn't control the car's throttle or brakes.

The first proper ACC system was Mercedes ' Distronic system, which appeared on the S-Class limousine in 1999. This system not only controlled the throttle, but also the brakes to maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front.

Since then, car makers have embraced ACC, and it can be found on superminis , hatchbacks and sports cars , while the rising level of traffic on our roads means it's arguably a more useful feature than standard cruise control on its own, as it can adjust speed according to traffic flow.

How does cruise control work?

Modern cruise control systems are integrated into a car's electronics, and are often combined with additional tech, such as lane departure warning and blind spot sensors. With standard cruise control, you need to select cruise mode via a switch, then accelerate to your desired speed, and press a button – either on the steering wheel or on a lever on the steering column - to set that speed.

The car's electronics then maintain your selected speed, so you can take your foot of the accelerator. On some cars you can adjust your speed via a button, and the car will automatically change its speed accordingly.

On a car with adaptive cruise control (ACC), you switch on the system, then you can raise or lower your speed as desired, and the car will accelerate to that set speed. These systems use either radar or laser sensors to maintain a set distance to the car in front, and they also have the ability to increase or decrease that distance as required.

To deactivate cruise control, you simply press a button to regain control of the throttle. However, one important safety feature that all of these systems are required to have is that the system will immediately deactivate if the car's brakes are applied. On cars with a manual gearbox, pressing the clutch pedal will sometimes have the same effect, although not all cars behave in the same way. Most cars will have a memory function, so that you can resume the same speed after the brakes have been applied.

Earlier cruise control systems would have a lower speed threshold of around 20-30mph where cruise control couldn't be activated, and some manufacturers still maintain this set-up. However, some of the latest ACC systems also incorporate a traffic function, so they can operate in stop-start conditions.

Cruise control types

Essentially there are four types of cruise control on offer, ranging from the most basic speed limiter to systems that can negotiate stop-start traffic and even change lanes. We look at the benefits and disadvantages of each below.

Speed limiter

What is it? The most basic form of cruise control. There are systems that can be hard-wired into a vehicle to limit its top speed (a 70mph limit in vans, for example), or there are driver-activated systems. You can set a maximum speed for your vehicle, but you maintain control of the car's accelerator at all times. When you approach your set maximum, the car will simply stop accelerating. This will usually happen softly, so you'll barely notice.

Found on: Citroen, Ford, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, vans, can be added aftermarket, too. Advantages: Helps you stick to speed limits, saves fuel. Disadvantages: Driver has to continue using the throttle to maintain speed.

Cruise control

What is it? Standard cruise control is a fairly common feature on new cars. You turn the system on (usually indicated by a graphic on the dashboard), then once you're up to your desired speed, you press a button to set it, and the car maintains that speed.

Found on: Most mainstream new cars, except for the most basic trims. Advantages: Takes strain out of long drives, more fuel efficient than using the accelerator manually, helps you stick to speed limits. Disadvantages: Driver has to take over when traffic slows, only worth using on clear motorways.

Adaptive cruise control

What is it? Either a radar or laser-based system that can maintain speed, but reduces speed if the gap to the car in front falls below a preset distance. This constitutes Level One automation on the automated vehicle classification chart, as they driver is required to take control at any time.

Found on: Assorted BMW, Fiat group, Ford, JLR, Lexus, Mercedes, VW Group models, and increasing in use by other makers. Advantages: Adjusts speed according to traffic, takes strain out of long drives, helps fuel efficiency. Disadvantages: Sensors can be 'blinded' in bad weather, electronics can be slow to react to sudden traffic slowing, distance to the car in front can be big enough to tempt other drivers to cut in front of you, sometime systems are jerky when changing speed.

Semi-autonomous cruise control

The latest hi-tech cruise control systems are one step closer to the fully autonomous self-driving car, and are classed as Level 2 automation. This means the automation can control the throttle, brakes and steering, but the driver still needs to intervene if the systems fail to detect objects. Semi-autonomous systems can vary in sophistication, and can help with steering inputs, move in stop-start traffic, or even change lanes on the motorway with the flick of an indicator, or adjust the car's speed according to GPS data and road sign recognition cameras.

Found on: Audi A3 /A8/Q7, BMW 7 Series , Mercedes S-Class , Volvo XC90 Advantages: Takes strain out of driving and traffic jams, helps fuel consumption. Disadvantages: Sensors need to be kept clear for it to work, too easy for driver to 'switch off' and lose concentration.

Cruise control has become a common feature in modern cars, allowing drivers to maintain a steady speed without using the accelerator pedal. Ideal for long motorway drives, traditional cruise control allows you to set a specific speed, giving your right foot a much-needed break. While this tech has been around since the 1960s, the system has evolved in recent decades. The latest adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems use sensors to monitor the traffic ahead, automatically adjusting your car’s speed to maintain a safe following distance.

Different carmakers have their own versions of these systems – Audi’s ‘Adaptive Cruise’, BMW’s ‘Active Cruise Control’, and Volvo’s ‘Pilot Assist’ are just a few examples – and some are more intelligent than others, even changing lanes and steering autonomously. Some cars are also equipped with ‘Traffic Jam Assist’, which can handle stop-and-start traffic, easing the stress of daily commutes.

From straightforward speed control to sophisticated, traffic-responsive systems, cruise control technology can help to take some of the stress out of long journeys. Read on to explore how these features work and how to use them.

What is cruise control?

Cruise control is a system that maintains the speed of a car automatically. Using controls found on or behind the steering wheel, the driver can set a desired speed that the car will continue to follow without any use of the accelerator pedal. It’s found in cars with an automatic or manual gearbox, although its functions are usually more limited in the latter. Most electric cars also come with cruise control.

It’s designed to be used on long A-road or motorway journeys, when prolonged use of the accelerator pedal could cause cramp or soreness in the driver’s right foot. Once a speed has been set, the driver can relax their foot and focus on controlling the car’s steering. The first cruise control systems held the throttle open mechanically, but modern systems are computer-controlled. Many cruise control systems will only activate above a certain minimum speed, usually around 25 to 30mph.

What is adaptive cruise control?

Adaptive cruise control (often abbreviated to ACC) is a more advanced cruise control system that uses lasers, cameras or radar mounted in the front bumper to track the speed and position of the vehicle in front. Cars fitted with the system can automatically match the speed of the vehicle in front and maintain a safe distance. Many systems allow the driver to set their preferred distance to the vehicle in front.

If the vehicle ahead slows down, the driver’s car will also slow down without the need to use the brake pedal. If the vehicle ahead speeds up, the driver’s car will only speed up until it reaches the limit set by the driver. However, only systems paired with an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system will automatically perform an emergency stop if the car ahead comes to a sudden halt. In 2024 AEB was made a legal requirement for all new cars sold in the UK and the EU.

Adaptive cruise control is sometimes referred to as ‘dynamic’ cruise control, while other automakers use their own names; Mercedes calls it ‘Distronic Plus’ and Porsche, ‘Porsche Active Safe’.

Some vehicles even have ‘Traffic Jam Assist’, an extension of adaptive cruise control that can automatically slow the car to a halt as well as accelerate and brake at low speeds in congestion, reducing driver fatigue. It’s worth noting that after coming to a halt for more than a few seconds, safety requirements mean driver intervention is usually required; squeezing the accelerator should allow Traffic Jam Assist to resume.

How do I use cruise control?

Check your car’s handbook for the location of the cruise control buttons as they differ from vehicle to vehicle. They are often found in an easy-to-access location, such as on the steering wheel or column stalk, to make them quick and safe to use.

The system can be overridden at any time by pressing on the brake pedal, so you should keep your foot close to the brake in case of emergencies. There may be differences in controls between different manufacturers, so always read your car’s handbook first. Some typical cruise control buttons include:

On/off: This activates the system, but probably won’t hold you at your desired speed. Turning it on will almost always be accompanied by a dashboard light.
Set: Once the system is switched on, pressing the set button should tell the car to hold the current speed. In most cars this will turn the dashboard indicator green.
Cancel: This pauses the cruise control, so you have complete control again, without turning cruise control fully off. The cruise control should still remember the speed you chose to cruise at.
Res or resume: Pressing this will see the car accelerate back up to the speed you chose before hitting the cancel button or pressing the brake pedal. You'll still need to change gears in a manual car if necessary. An automatic gearbox will change gears for you.
Up and down arrows or ‘+’ and ‘-’: With cruise control activated, use these to increase or decrease the car’s speed. Single presses often increase or decrease the speed in small increments, while holding the same button or stalk changes it in increments of 5mph or even 10mph. Of course, this varies from one model to another.

Cruise control is best used on long stretches of motorway and should be used to maintain a safe speed while the driver pays full attention to their surroundings. Drivers should not treat cruise control like an autonomous driving system, and the driver needs to pay as much attention to the road when using cruise control as they do with regular driving.

What is a speed limiter?

Some cars are fitted with a speed limiter, either alongside cruise control or on its own. As with cruise control, you set the maximum speed you’d like to travel at, but unlike cruise control, you're still required to press down the accelerator. This is ideal for busy speed-limit zones, where you may want to maintain complete control of your speed without exceeding the limit. Squeeze the accelerator, and your car will simply reach your chosen speed and stop accelerating. However, pressing the throttle pedal all the way down will override the system –it’s a fail safe designed to let you accelerate out of trouble if needed.

What about Intelligent Speed Assistance?

Like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) is another mandatory safety feature fitted to every new car sold in the UK and the EU from 2024. Unlike a traditional speed limiter above, the ISA system uses your car’s GPS and traffic sign recognition cameras to determine the road’s speed limit. The ISA system then limits your car to this speed, stopping you from breaking the speed limit.

The system can be overridden in certain situations when the driver pushes hard on the accelerator pedal, and it can be turned off entirely. However, the system is automatically reactivated every time you start the car. From July 7th 2024, it is a legal requirement for every new car sold in the UK to come with the technology, including unsold new cars sitting in dealerships that will need to have the system retrofitted.

We tried GM’s Super Cruise handsfree driving tech – here’s what we think

Super cruise is one of the more advanced self driving systems.

While not fully autonomous, Level 2 self driving is becoming more common with many manufacturers having their own systems. GM is one of those manufacturers, and its “Super Cruise” system claims to be the most extensive one available in the United States at the moment.

You can use the system in a lot of places

It won’t do everything, but it will do more than most

You do still need to pay attention

Like other Level 2 systems, Super Cruise allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on designated stretches of road and let the vehicle do its thing. As with other systems, Super Cruise will pop up a notification when you can activate it. When it’s running, the top of your wheel will go green. If you see it flash red, then it’s time to take control of the vehicle.

However, Super Cruise differs from other systems in a number of ways. I recently managed to get hands-on (or hands-off, more specifically) with GM’s system while driving a 2024 GMC Acadia. Here’s what I experienced.

GM claims its self-driving system is the biggest in North America, and that may be due to the fact it works on a good number of single-lane roads. In fact, most of my experience with it was on the kind of backroads many people encounter every day. This is a big bonus, as systems restricted to larger highways and interstates might be a bit of a waste for a good number of drivers.

While the section of South Carolina I was trying it out in may have been curated by GM, it was a press trip after all, I was still surprised at the amount of Super Cruise enabled roads on offer. As for how the system performed, that’s something I’m about to go in-depth on.

It won’t do everything, but it will do more than most

Super Cruise is one of the most hands-off Level 2 systems I’ve encountered. Automatic lane changes are a large part of that. If we’re ranking things by ease of use, then GM is currently top of the pile. Ford’s BlueCruise system will change lanes by itself, but you need to hit an indicator stalk to make that happen. BMW’s system will also change lanes for you and will even suggest when a lane change is a good idea, but you’ll need to look into the relevant side mirror to confirm the action.

With Super Cruise, the vehicle will just change lanes if you’re on a two-or-more lane highway, the vehicle in front of you is moving slower than your set speed, and a lane change is safe. You can just sit back and relax. If you do want to be more involved, you can still demand a lane change by signaling for it. The vehicle will then move over when it is safe to do so.

As with other Level 2 systems, there are some limitations. You need to keep your eyes on the road, and the car will shout at you if you fail to do so. It won’t take the exit ramp for you or make turns, so you’ll have to take control when it’s time to change roads. As with other systems, you’ll need to step in and take control once the vehicle leaves a Super Cruise-enabled area or just doesn’t feel confident it can navigate a situation safely.

You’ll also have to take control when approaching a stop light, though once you have stopped at the light, you can re-engage the system and simply tap the accelerator when you want to get going again. Super Cruise will then continue as normal and get itself back up to speed.

As with other Level 2 systems, Super Cruise isn’t perfect, and you are still responsible for the vehicle when it’s engaged. So, you do have to pay attention and be ready to step in at any time. If you want to take control, a tap on the brake will turn off Super Cruise, just like it does with regular cruise control.

You can disable automatic lane changes, but keeping the feature enabled may be another reason to pay attention.

Super Cruise can travel at up to 85 mph, and you set a maximum speed the same way you would if you were using standard cruise control. While 85 is fine on a few roads in Texas, it’s likely to get you a hefty speeding ticket should law enforcement spot you at that speed in most of the United States. You could argue that this isn’t too much of a problem with regular cruise control or other Level 2 systems, as your speed is likely to match the person in front of you should you be behind someone. In moderate traffic, you may not be picked out of the crowd and pulled over.

However, with GM Super Cruise, the vehicle will do everything it reasonably can to travel at its top speed. So, as I’m sure GM would suggest, you should probably set it to the speed limit while Level 2 is engaged. Or at least pay extra attention to the roads.

In terms of price, three years of Super Cruise is provided with every Super Cruise enabled vehicle. The tech that makes Super Cruise work is an optional extra on most vehicles, and its price will vary depending on what it’s being fitted to. GM also says a subscription will be required once those three years are up. Current subscription fees are $25 a month or $250 a year, making Super Cruise one of the cheaper subscription-based systems.

Some ultra-high-end hypercars and luxury vehicles have over-the-top features that you’re unlikely to see on anything a regular human being can afford. But in this day and age, you don’t have to be a multi-billionaire to own a ride packed with high-end tech.

This includes things like keyless entry, systems that basically allow the vehicle to drive itself, and tech that takes the hassle out of what many consider challenging maneuvers.

Traffic Sign Recognition

Using a forward-pointed camera, this feature recognizes important road signs that the driver should know.

Acting as a backup sight for the driver, it recognizes anything from speed limit signs to railroad crossings, displaying them on the driver’s touchscreen or Head-Up Display.

Heads Up Display

The Head-Up Display projects important information just below the driver’s line of sight.

This technology encourages drivers to keep their eyes on the road, potentially preventing accidents and saving lives. HUDs can display speed limits, music tracks, temperature, and incoming calls.

Lane Departure Warning

The Lane Departure Warning is engaged when a vehicle begins to drift out of its designated lanes without a turn signal.

It is usually in the form of a beeping noise and is meant to keep drivers aware of their actions and prevent collisions.

Adaptive Cruise Control

While Standard Cruise Control maintains a preset speed, Adaptive Cruise Control reacts to surrounding traffic.

Once turned on, ACC can slow the vehicle to match the car ahead of it, stop the vehicle if a collision is predicted, or reduce speed to manage curves in the road safely.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

As of 2007, this feature became mandatory in most new cars. This system relies on a simple sensor located inside each tire.

It tracks the air pressure and warns the driver when the pressure is low. It's essential to keep track of this so your tire doesn't blow out.

Blind Spot Monitoring

This feature uses sensors on either side of the car to detect cars, with the hope of preventing collision. Blind Spot Monitoring helps drivers be aware of their surroundings while on the road.

Some cars connect this feature with a camera view of the blindspot that appears on the driver dash display or the HUD.

Forward Collision Warning

Forward Collision Warning uses front-facing cameras and radar to detect cars, pedestrians, and even animals.

Once something is detected, it sends a warning message to the driver. These messages can be tactile, auditory, or visual.

High Beam Assist

Using sensors placed at the front of the vehicle, High Beam Assist senses cars approaching and automatically adjusts the headlights to be either high beams or low beams.

This safety feature is meant to prevent blinding oncoming traffic with high beams, helping to improve safety when driving at night.

Park Assist

With Park Assist, the vehicle can take control of the motor functions to aid the driver in parking situations.

By using a combination of cameras, sensors, and control over the steering wheel and speed, this feature parks the car while avoiding cars and other objects– all without the driver's help. It is most popularly used to aid drivers in parallel parking.
