British Tourism & Travel Show 2021: Keynotes announced

  • Press Releases
  • British Tourism & Travel Show…

british travel trade fair

The British Tourism & Travel Show has revealed an impressive programme of live seminars. Taking place from 22 – 23 September 2021 at the NEC, Birmingham, UK, the leading group travel trade show will bring together experts from prominent authorities including VisitEngland, The Tourism Alliance, the Association of Group Travel Organisers, the Confederation of Passenger Transport and more.

Free to attend for all visitors, the carefully curated programme will host some of the UK’s leading experts and figure heads to present the latest tourism trends, support resources, recovery strategies, innovations and compliance measures to optimise tour planners’ restarts, itineraries and operational prowess.

Says Event Manager Lloyd Jones: “This year’s event comes at an opportune time for the tourism industry, as it emerges from an immensely challenging 18 months and looks ahead to regrowth and recovery. In addition to providing valuable networking opportunities and inspiration for tours and excursions from 250 exhibiting organisations, we have put together this year’s keynote programme with a focus on delivering actionable insights for visitors.”

Lloyd continues: “Visitors will leave armed with knowledge about the support available to them and strategies to power through the year ahead and beyond”.

“The British Travel & Tourism Show is vital to the group travel market,” explains Wendy Hartley-Scarff, CEO of the Association of Group Travel Organisers (AGTO), who will be speaking on the second day.

“It enables tour planners to source products and develop itineraries in a great environment of friendly and knowledgeable people, and it provides interesting, entertaining, and thought-provoking seminars.  A visit to BTTS is invaluable,” she says.

Business Support

Opening the programme, Vicky Parr, business support manager at VisitEngland, will provide useful insights on the recovery of the tourism industry, and will discuss support resources available from the national tourist board to help drive business growth and productivity. To find out more, head to the Keynote Theatre on opening day (Wednesday 22 September) at 11.00am.

Market insights and strategies for success

Holidaying behaviour changed significantly following the coronavirus pandemic – but will these new trends be here for the long haul? Kurt Janson, director at Tourism Alliance, will share insights about recent changes in consumer behaviour, and will discuss what customers are now looking for in a holiday, and how to respond moving forwards.

To recover fully, the industry needs to look further than just summer, our usual domestic hotspots, and our regular strategies. Digital Visitor’s CEO, Anthony Rawlins discusses his thoughts on the opportunity for UK tourism, and strategies that will help the whole tourism ecosystem thrive. Visitors will learn how to secure off-peak bookings, strategies for long-term growth and how to maintain domestic audiences once international travel returns.

International tours

For those poised for restarting overseas visits, Mark Purchase, operations manager at the Confederation of Passenger Transport will kick off day two’s sessions with a talk on post-Brexit coach operations into Europe, following the new Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the UK and EU. Visitors will learn how to stay compliant, how to make the most of opportunities, and how to understand potential pitfalls.

Innovation in tourism

Wendy Hartley-Scarff, CEO of AGTO, will deliver a presentation on innovation in group travel. The session will look at the way the industry has adapted to the COVID crisis, and how destinations and attractions have changed their behaviour – or not, as the case may be. Visitors will learn about new innovations and how to work with them, how not to conduct business, and about continuing developments.

More speaker highlights

Fed Pereira, Alice Aubrey and Georgia Aubrey, founders of Lovetovisit, who have over 30 years combined experience in the tourism and culture industry, will share insights with visitors about reaching new audiences, engaging with core audiences, and how to be more proactive towards diversity and inclusivity.

Krystene Bousfield, senior associate solicitor at Travlaw LLP, will deliver a whistlestop tour of the key provisions of the travel sector’s most important piece of legislation – The Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018.

Further sessions will be announced soon.

British Tourism & Travel Show – free trade registration

The show will take place at the NEC Birmingham on 22-23 September. For the visitors that attend each year, it offers a compelling line up of exhibiting attractions and destinations, group friendly accommodation providers, suppliers, and networking opportunities. BCTF returns to Harrogate this April

british travel trade fair

  • February 14, 2022

The owner of British Craft Trade Fair (BCTF), Kerrison Exhibitions, is thrilled to confirm a return to the physical exhibition this April following a two-year hiatus. The much-loved show will take place from April 10–12 at its usual venue of the Yorkshire Event Centre (YEC) in beautiful Harrogate.

Having run for more than 45 years, BCTF is a very special event in the trade exhibition calendar and unique in its focus on purely handmade British goods. From exquisite hand-wrought jewellery and spectacular works of fine art; to the best of British-made ceramics, woodwork, metalwork, paper products, textiles and more, BCTF is proud to fly the flag for British artisans.

With the appetite for locally made, impeccably sourced products at an all-time high amongst the British public and overseas consumers, the 2022 event promises to be a real treasure trove for discerning retailers who are keen to champion British handmade.

british travel trade fair

Visit the BCTF website to register as a visitor

The BCTF Awards will once again take place on the Monday evening (11th April) at the YEC after the show closes, with the following categories to be recognised:

• Award for Excellence, sponsored by The Giftware Association • Award for Excellence in Jewellery sponsored by The National Association of Jewellers • Best Newcomer Award sponsored by Heart Gallery, Hebden Bridge • Form & Function Award sponsored by The Platform Gallery, Ribble Valley • BCTF Award for Excellence sponsored by The Pyramid Gallery, York • Best Post-Newcomer Award sponsored by Home & Giftware magazine in partnership with Denre.com

Show Director, Kane Thomas, said. “We’re delighted to be bringing BCTF back to Harrogate this April. We’re investing in far-reaching promotion to ensure we deliver the highest possible quality and volume of audience to the fair. This is in addition to direct mail, email and social activity to our existing database of qualified and registered buyers, which exceeds 10,000 names. Our lineup of over 250 carefully vetted exhibitors is excellent with many well-known faces and

established brands participating in the show; and this year they’ll be joined by a huge intake of talented newcomers.

“I warmly invite all retailers and gallery owners with an interest in British craft to come along this April in support of these fantastic makers, who are eager to showcase their inspiring new products and collections to the trade.”

british travel trade fair

2022 is THE year for British Artisans

All the signs are there that conditions are ripe for further growth in the booming British craft market. Rather than settling for throwaway fashions, mass produced gifts and cheap homewares, consumers – many of whom contributed to a total of £billions of savings during lockdown – are willing to spend that bit more on thoughtful investment pieces that will stand the test of time.

The once in a decade Crafts Council Market for Craft report found that craft sales in this country increased from £883 million in 2006 to £3 billion in 201 9, a figure that is likely to rise still higher as the British public strengthens its determination to support home grown talent and pursue more sustainable product offerings.

Almost three-quarters of British adults bought craft in 2019, amounting to 25 million handmade items , whilst 10.3 million Brits were reported to be buying their crafts online, a number which has trebled over the past decade*.

Eight out of ten UK adults wants to buy British-made goods and will happily pay more for items made in this country, which puts British crafters in an incredibly strong position as we go forward into 2022.

BCTF is ideally placed to help makers and retailers alike to capitalise on this huge potential for authentically hand-crafted products, which are also free from the supply chain problems currently affecting much of the consumer goods market.

These important findings from the Crafts Council are also backed up by the Made in Britain Buying British Report, which confirmed beyond doubt that consumers want to support local businesses and to buy more sustainable products – all they need is the reassurance from retailers and suppliers that the products they’re buying have the necessary credentials.

british travel trade fair

Venue and Facilities

By the time BCTF in April comes around – and with the last Covid-related restrictions being scrapped by the end of February – the pandemic may well be truly behind us. That said, the organiser will naturally follow all government and local authority guidelines at the time.

Yorkshire Event Centre is a state-of-the-art venue offering a pleasant and relaxing buying environment, with excellent ventilation and acres of easily accessible green outdoor space where people can get a breath of fresh Yorkshire air between meetings. There is also plenty of free on-site parking and a complimentary shuttle bus from Harrogate train station for those who’ll be arriving by public transport.

The town of Harrogate is a gorgeous location with plenty of hotels and many great shops and restaurants to enjoy – the perfect place to combine business with pleasure and even to enjoy a short mini-break for those with a bit more time to spare.

*The meteoric rise of online sourcing and shopping which accelerated during the pandemic will be reflected by a follow-up digital edition of BCTF on May 15-17. Watch this space for more details.

Humiliated Argentina issues furious dig as Brazil 'helps UK' get tourists to Falklands

A rgentina has issued a furious complaint to Brazil over what it described as "provocative" actions by the UK government to promote its "illegitimate occupation" of the Falkland Islands.

The diplomatic row erupted after the UK was allowed to host a stand promoting tourism to the Falklands at the WTM Latin America trade fair in São Paulo.

In a letter addressed to the Brazilian ambassador in Buenos Aires, Argentina's Secretary for the Malvinas accused the British government of trying to garner support for its sovereignty over the disputed islands in the South Atlantic.

Andres Dachary said Argentina repudiated "this new provocation" which he described as an attempt to "consolidate the illegal British presence in our Islands" through economic initiatives.

Travel to the Falklands is promoted via the island's tourism board, which tries to use its unique wildlife as a key selling point.

The tourist board says it aims to give the Falkland Islands "a worldwide reputation for its unrivalled wildlife and natural environment."

So as to meet that goal, it has been taking part in tourism trade fairs in South America and around the world.

In 2022, the Falkland Islands had a stand at the prestigious International Tourism Fair that also was held in Brazil and provoked an outcry from Argentina.

Before the pandemic, tourism was one of the key industries alongside fishing for the islanders.

Up to seven-and-a-half visitors would come to the Falklands every year. Like everywhere else in the world, tourism to the islands was severely hit by the Covid pandemic but has been picking up in recent years.

Figures for 2022 show that 3,519 people came to the Falklands again, of which some 787 were travelling for leisure.

Argentinians have been frequent visitors in the past, but they now have to get their passports stamped with the word "Falkland Islands", which is deterring many from making the trip.

Javier Milei, Argentina's recently elected President, pledged during his campaign to regain sovereignty over the islands.

He told Sky News during the Davos economic forum in January that talks had started with the UK over the islands and that he expected more discussions to take place in the near future.

However, Britain insists the sovereignty of the islands is not up for discussion.

Commenting on Mr Milei's remarks, a British government official said: "The UK position and ongoing support for the Falkland Islanders' right to self-determination remains unchanged."

In a referendum on the islands' sovereignty in 2013, 99.8 percent voted to remain a British territory - with only three voting against.
