Cruising along the Amazon River.

Amazon River Cruise: Memorable Journey

The Amazon is a river, and a region, of superlatives. It's the world's largest river when measured by volume. With 209,000 cubic meters (55 million gallons) of water flowing into the Pacific each second, it's five times the size of the Congo, the next largest river. The basin it drains is some 7 million square kilometers (2.7 million square miles), making it the largest drainage basin in the world. (By comparison, the contiguous United States is roughly 8 million square kilometers, or 3.1 million square miles.) What most impresses visitors to the Amazon, however, is rarely these numbers. Instead it's the area's cultural and natural riches and the experience of seeing the rain forest extend in every direction.

As you travel along the length of the Amazon, you'll call at villages that are not just geographically remote, but are far from contemporary culture as well. Some 400 indigenous peoples live in the Amazon, as they have for centuries. On the same journey, you can visit the 19th-century opera house at Manaus and the colonial-era churches in Santarém, Macapá and other cities. Biologically the basin is home to some 10 percent of all the world's known animal and plant species. From jaguars to macaws and pink dolphins to glass frogs, the Amazon is an area of astounding and unique biodiversity.

Amazon River Cruises 2024 & 2025

affiliate disclosure

An Amazon River cruise can be the cruise of a lifetime – and there are a lot of cruise lines sailing to this incredible rainforest and ecosystem.

An opportunity to sail through along the Amazon River, experience Brazil, see pink dolphins in the wild and maybe even hold a sloth. I was lucky enough to sail the Amazon River on a 30 day itinerary complete with an overnight in Manaus back in 2022 as a crew member. I never realized just how many cruise lines offer this incredible opportunity with many of the major luxury ocean cruise lines as well as one premium line offering Amazon River Cruises in 2024 and 2025.

Boca De Valeria, Brazil during a cruise on the Amazon River

Cruises that sail along the Amazon River are not common place among cruise lines. They are not nearly as common as a cruise to the Caribbean, Alaska, or the Mediterranean. Instead cruises to the Amazon River are often part of larger cruises – like a grand voyage or a cruise around the world .

There are a few Amazon river cruises that are specific to the Amazon though – meaning that they are roundtrip from the same port and not a segment of a longer cruise. Amazon River Cruises in 2024 are far more common among the luxury cruise market but every once and awhile there is one from a premium line as well. Whichever way you decide to cruise on the Amazon River you can’t go wrong experiencing this wonder of nature.

What Can You Expect On a Cruise on the Amazon River?

Before sailing on an Amazon river cruise I had images in my mind of a jungle right outside my window. While there were various parts of the river that was true for the most part this river is wide enough that while you can feel the difference between sailing on the ocean and sailing on the Amazon and you can see land on either side of you nearly all of the time, you don’t feel like you are right in the jungle.

The water was considered “white water” – and it had the muddy, silty, mixed up look of white water. In this case I’m not talking about the same kind of white water in white water rafting. No, this white water isn’t due to the choppiness of the water but rather the muddy, cloudy color of the water in much of the Amazon River. The color is made up of the heavy sediment load within the water . It took a little getting used to after spending years cruising in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean and Mediterranean to then sailing over this brownish water. And, that muddy looking water beneath us makes up an astonishing 20% of the freshwater discharged into the ocean comes from the Amazon River.

Meeting of the Waters where the Amazon River meets the River Negro

Sailing along this river you are in the Amazon Rainforest, with so many different creatures, so much lush greenery, and on a river that changes its course throughout the year.

There will be giant bugs and insects along the outside decks of the ship in a variety of shapes and colors. Even as someone that doesn’t like insects I must admit it was interesting to see so many different varieties. I was also surprised to have not been bitten by many bugs (or any bugs) while cruising along the Amazon River. This was likely due to the time of year – late November and early December – as its conventionally always recommended to wear bug repellent. And, in fact, it’s because of the bugs (mosquitos) in the Amazon River basin that everyone onboard was required to have a Yellow Fever vaccine.

What Ports Are There on Cruises to the Amazon River in 2024 & 2025?

There are a somewhat standard set of ports for Amazon River cruises on an ocean cruise ship. It is a mix of cities like Manaus, and villages like Boca da Valeria. Some ports are stopped at because of the excursions they offer to see alligators or pink dolphins (Macapa and Santarem respectively). Some ports, such as Paritins, are known for something very specific. In the case of Paritins it is known for a local show called “Boi Bumba”, showcasing some of the acts similar to those seen in Carnivale. Or places like Alter do Chao have lovely beaches.

amazon river cruise ships

The ports that seem to come up again and again for most major cruises on the Amazon River are: – Manaus (often an overnight port) – Paritins – Boca da Valeria – Macapa – Santarem – Alter do Chao

Most of the Amazon river cruises in Brazil will include stops similar to the map below. The exact route that the ship will take to get to each port is likely to change on different voyages though depending on the time of year, the depth of the river, and the advice of the local pilot.

amazon river cruise ships

You can see how far inland a cruise on an ocean cruise ship along the Amazon River goes and it gives you an idea of how big this river is – the largest river by volume in the world and is either the longest or second longest river (behind the Nile) depending on where you define the “source” or start of the river to be. The river is believed to be about 4,000 miles whereas the Nile is 4,132. Britannica.com has a lot of great articles on the Amazon River for those interested.

Sounds pretty cool, right? Check Current Pricing and Availability for All Amazon River Cruises

Plan On Lots of Tender Ports

The majority – if not all of the ports – that you will visit while on the Amazon River will be tender ports. In the case of the voyage I just completed that included our overnight in Manaus. A tender is a small boat – usually one of the life boats from the cruise ship – that is used to bring guests from the ship to the shore. These are used for a number of reasons such as it being too shallow by the pier, lack of pier, or that there is no pier space available.

Guests with mobility challenges may not be able to get off of the ship on tender ports depending on the design of the tendering operation of the cruise ship and the tender boats themselves. If you have mobility challenges it is best to talk with the cruise line about the specific tendering procedure for the cruise ship you are sailing on.

Want to know more about tendering? Check out this post: What is a Cruise Ship Tender?

Holland America Line offers a cruise to the Amazon river in 2024 & 2025

How Long Are Cruises on the Amazon?

Another reason is the length of the voyage. To be able to go in and out of the Amazon river at minimum is 2 weeks. To go along the river as far in as Manaus and then come back out – while making stops at other ports – will take about 10 days within the River itself.

Longer cruises tend to be more attractive to those guests looking at the more upscale cruise market. So, while some mainstream cruise lines might have some loyal cruisers that would enjoy a cruise like this, it’s very off-brand of what they typically offer their guests and the bulk of their cruising demographic wouldn’t be interested.

Kindly note the below is a sampling of cruises to the Amazon River and is not meant to be a definitive list. Cruise lines may also add cruises to what’s available for cruises to the Amazon. This list is meant to be a starting point for those interested in looking at itineraries, pricing, and excursions on some of the best Amazon cruises.

Cruises on the Amazon River range from 12 nights up to full world cruises of over 100 nights long. If your focus is cruising on the Amazon though, the average range is around 18-30 days.

How Much Does a Cruise on the Amazon River Cost?

Amazon River cruises have a big range in price corresponding somewhat to the varying lengths of cruises to the Amazon but also which type of cruise. The least expensive of these options is a 12 night journey on Oceania . Arguably though the best deal is on Holland America Line with it’s 27 night roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale option starting at $4,399 .

As there are many options to sail on the Amazon River that are part of longer voyages, you can imagine that the price for those full voyages goes well into the 10’s of thousands, for instance Holland America Line’s 2025 Pole to Pole Grand Voyage with the full 133 night voyage starting at $26,399.

Which Cruise Lines Go to the Amazon River

For this list we will only be looking at ocean based cruise lines offering Amazon River cruises and not those that specialize in river cruises.

You’ll notice this list is comprised almost exclusively of luxury brands with only one premium cruise line offering cruises along the Amazon River. This is likely for a few reasons.

The first of which is the size of the ships. Very large cruise ships would likely not be able to make it up the Amazon River or would only be able to go very specific times of year depending on rainfall. This is because while this river is massive it’s not always that deep. Many of the large ships would run aground.

Best Amazon Cruises

The best of anything is subjective and it’s hard to compare these cruises apples to apples when each cruise line in itself offers a different experience. So, we’re going to look at this based on the itinerary these Amazon River cruises offer to create our list of Best Amazon Cruises 2023-2025:

People buy food from street vendors in Manaus while on a cruise to the Amazon River.

What Currency Is Used on an Amazon River Cruise in Brazil?

While the Amazon River flows through a variety of South American countries, a cruise along the Amazon River through one of the ocean going cruise lines will stop at ports in Brazil. Many places in Brazil will accept the US dollar; however, the local currency is Brazilian Real. As of this writing (January 2023) it is about 5 Real to 1 USD.

woman holding sloth in Brazil while on a cruise on the Amazon River

The larger ports, like Manaus, have places to do currency exchange in the port terminal. When exchanging directly at the port you will not get the best rate. What you see on Google is not going to be the same as what you get. The difference won’t be that much but it will be noticeable. You may have better luck with an ATM depending on what fees are charged to you. Places in the busier cities will take credit card and you may luck into a better conversion rate using your card. However, you should not rely on being able to use your credit card ashore throughout the stops on the Amazon River in Brazil! Many stores and nearly all small vendors will not take credit cards. Cash, whether it be US dollars or Brazilian Real, is king in this jungle.

Kindly note that onboard most cruise lines operate in US dollars – there are exceptions to this depending on where the cruise line you sail on is based out of though.

What Vaccines Do You Need for Cruises to the Amazon River?

Vaccine requirements may vary between cruise lines for your cruise on the Amazon River in 2024 & 2025; however, most Amazon river cruises will require all guests to have a Yellow Fever vaccine and most guests to have a COVID vaccine.

The Yellow Fever vaccine needs to be administered at least 10 days before traveling into the Amazon River although some cruise lines will require it to be at least 14 days in advance. This vaccine is only required once and you will be given a booklet or other form of proof of vaccination for Yellow Fever. Make sure to keep that book safe.

In the United States many pharmacies offer the Yellow Fever vaccine. However, as there are sometimes shortages of it if you are thinking of doing an a cruise along the Amazon River or going to any of the places where a Yellow Fever vaccine is recommended it makes sense to get the shot as soon as possible. This will help prevent disappointment when that amazing cruise deal pops up and you realize you can’t go because you can’t get a vaccine appointment soon enough.

Tender platforms in Paritins Brazil during a cruise on the Amazon River

What Should I Pack for a Cruise On the Amazon River in 2024 & 2025?

Cruising along the Amazon is similar to cruising in the Caribbean for temperature – maybe even a little warmer still as you’ll be right along the equator for a fair bit of your journey. Plan on it being hot and humid. With that there are the standard things you should pack, like sunscreen, a hat, and some loose fitting long sleeve and long pant clothing to help both prevent bug bites but also sunburn. As you are cruising on the Amazon, insect repellent is definitely recommended.

Other top items would be binoculars and a good camera. The river is close, but as there are sections that are miles wide you will see so much more if you bring binoculars. And, if you want a picture of what you see so far away bring a camera with a decent zoom lens on it.

I would also recommend having a tote bag or bag pack of some sort for going ashore. Most everywhere in Brazil still will hand you a plastic bag with pretty much every purchase so a bag to put your purchases in will help reduce the number of plastic bags you use. However, you’ll want to be careful with your valuables ashore as pickpockets and people that will just steal your backpack are not uncommon.

Top Items for an Amazon Cruise Packing List 2024 & 2025:

  • Bug repellent
  • Secure tote bag
  • A sun hat (personal preference)

What Did I Think About Cruising on the Amazon River?

Have you ever been somewhere and thought “Wow. It’s so cool that I’m here!” and then after the cool factor of being there wore off you were like, “Oh, I thought it’d be more exciting”? That’s a little bit how I felt while cruising on the Amazon River. I need to quickly add though that because my life takes me all around the world all of the time (in the past 12 months I’ve been to 20 or so countries) it sometimes takes away the awe of different places. I need to stop and remind myself to smell the roses, so to speak. I get all of these incredible experiences that for most people might actually be a “once in a lifetime” experience, but I am experiencing so many of these “once in a lifetime” experiences that it doesn’t feel so rare anymore. So, with that big caveat in mind, what did I think about an Amazon River cruise?

It was wonderful to cruise on the Amazon River. I found how wide the river is surprising. It can also be very shallow. At one point there was only about 4 feet between the bottom of the ship and the muddy bottom of the river below us. There are also places that you can’t pass through at night because there’s too much risk of running aground – that ended up changing our itinerary as we weren’t allowed to leave Manaus because we would cross one particularly shallow section overnight.

amazon river cruise ships

It was really beautiful to be able to look out at the lushness of the jungle around you all day long and I really loved the ports where you could wander and be in nature. While I love looking out at the open ocean there was something incredible about having the Amazon rainforest on either side of the ship. Along the river you’re at the bottom of the Amazon River basin and this area is quite flat. When I had thought of the Amazon rainforest my mind had it being more mountainous.

The ports were largely what I expected. The smaller ports were similar to other small ports around the world – I think it most closely reminded me of visiting some of the islands and lesser visited islands of the South Pacific region. There is poverty but there is also beautiful architecture and nice people. There were a few stops when you would walk by the shops people would be “encouraging” you to go in. The people asking us to go in the shops never felt unsafe, it’s just a more in-your-face version of advertising than I personally like. For those that have travelled a lot I would say that it is less intrusive than in Kusadasi, Turkey or in Jamaica, but some of the ports were at least on par with the kind of hassling that you’d find in the Caribbean or Mexico. I would likely think twice about going ashore by myself at night.

Nearly every voyage in this region cruises to Manaus. When our cruise stopped in Manaus we were there for an overnight. The first evening when we got off the ship it felt a bit dodgy. We decided to walk one block more. Then after we walked that block we could see some Christmas lights, so we decided to walk one more block still. After that we found this beautiful area right in front of the opera house full of Christmas lights and Christmas decorations. I’m glad that we didn’t let the initial feelings of unease stop us from exploring this city a bit more. There is a lot of beauty to be found in Manaus. We then found a lovely restaurant for dinner and had a fabulous evening.

The next day I went ashore with some coworkers and took a tour of the Opera House. The Opera House was built during the rubber boom in the late 1800’s.

Note: If you are a crew member, there was a crew discount for the tour of the Opera House. Haven’t heard for crew discounts? Here are 10 Things To Know Before Working on a Cruise Ship

Nearly every cruise on the Amazon River in 2024 & 2025 will visit the opera house in Manaus

Most everyone’s favorite port when visiting the Amazon is Boca De Valeria. I am not sure I would say it was my favorite stop, but it was great to be able to get off the ship and nearly immediately be in nature. It’s a very small village where guests can take boats (for about $5) up some of the small tributaries of the river with a local guide. These boats are an adventure and it’s best to keep an adventurous mind about it. Stories of boats breaking down and having to borrow engines from other boats are not uncommon. They’ll get you back to the tender and they don’t go that far up the river so don’t be worried about taking them. It’s important to keep an adventurous mind about it.

This is also the port where I met my new sloth friend. There are quite a few kids walking around with sloths that you can give them a little bit of money to hold. I paid one dollar (USD) to hold Slothy for a few minutes. There are also lots of kids that will try to hold your hands and walk you around the island. This isn’t just to be cute – if you hold their hand and they guide you around at all they are expecting some amount of money.

There are some local crafts for sale on this island and there is even a “bar”. The bar is a small open air building with beer in a cooler or beer from a cooler in a little field with some chairs. Don’t expect a Senor Frogs here. Nope, everything is pretty small but it gets you into the jungle and right into this small village.

Most cruises to the Amazon River in 2024 & 2025 stop in Boca de Valeria

I enjoyed being on a cruise on the Amazon. If I was to go again I would want to go on a tour to see pink dolphins and go piranha fishing – not because I have any interest in catching piranha’s, but because I think it would be interesting to explore the area more. There’s a lot to discover within the Amazon and I’m incredibly lucky to have been able to experience and do a bit of exploring in this region.

Final Thoughts on Amazon River Cruises

This is a fantastic journey to go on! If an Amazon River cruise has been on your list, you can’t go wrong seeing it while experiencing the leisure and comfort of a cruise ship. Go explore the streets of Brazil and head back onboard in the evening for a delicious dinner. Or get a delicious (potentially adventurous) dinner ashore! If this cruise is something you are interested in I would recommend working with a travel advisor to find the best cruise and cruise line for you.

Some Caribbean islands see almost 'total destruction' after Hurricane Beryl

amazon river cruise ships

A more complete picture emerged Wednesday of the extensive damage wrought by Hurricane Beryl's trek across the Windward Islands, revealing destruction and at least seven deaths.

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday . All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With 19 participating states across the Caribbean , the agency was helping coordinate disaster response on Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Belize. The eye of Beryl, still a Category 4 storm, raked Jamaica's coast Wednesday afternoon and was expected to pass near the Cayman Islands Thursday morning, before making landfall in the Yucatan on Friday morning.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

The impacts to the Grenadine Islands are "quite significant," Riley said, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable. Even as recovery efforts began, a tropical wave brought rain and gusty winds Wednesday to the suffering residents.

Grenada prime minister discusses damage on Carriacou

In a briefing late Tuesday after spending more than two hours in a helicopter provided by the government of St. Lucia, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell described "total destruction" on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

"There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction," Mitchell said. "It is almost Armageddon-like, almost total damage and destruction of all buildings. Complete devastation and destruction of agriculture. Complete and total destruction of the natural environment."

"There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou; the mangroves are totally destroyed, the boats and the marinas significantly damaged," he said. "There is almost complete destruction of the electrical grid system in Carriacou. The entire communication system is completely destroyed."

However, Mitchell added, he'd been heartened by the volunteers "showing true Grenadian spirit" by arriving from other less damaged areas in boats and fishing vessels to begin delivering relief supplies to those affected.

Hurricane Beryl's fearsome seas As Beryl tears through Caribbean, a drone sends back stunning footage

Beryl damage updates

The following are the preliminary assessments Riley listed:

Carriacou, Grenada

  • The total population of 6,081 has been affected, so shelter is "a significant consideration."
  • Majority of homes and buildings have been extensively damaged
  • Communications have been significantly compromised

Petite Martinique, Grenada

  • Estimated 80% of the houses and buildings extensively damaged or destroyed
  • 900 people affected
  • Majority of the island is sheltering in place

Canouan, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • 100% of the island's population (12,600) has been affected
  • An estimated 90% of the houses were damaged, either extensively or destroyed
  • Police station in Charlestown lost its roof

Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Full population of 3,000 was affected by extensive damage
  • Estimated 98% of buildings, including houses badly damaged or destroyed
  • Airport control tower destroyed, hospital roof destroyed
  • Power plant received significant damage
  • Government assisting people who wish to evacuate

Mayreau, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Total population of 300 people affected
  • 90% of the housing stock and buildings have been damaged or destroyed

Palm Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Resort and desalination plant significantly damaged
  • More than 40 homes with damage, a number expected to rise
  • Confirmed significant damage to the fishing sector
  • More than 200 boats damaged
  • Significant damage to the coastal infrastructure, particularly along the south coast
  • Partial road obstruction
  • Significant damage on southern end

Trinidad and Tobago

  • Power outages
  • Water disruption on Tobago
  • Roadway blockages on both islands

Bequia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • An estimated 10% of the homes and buildings suffered roof damage
  • Airport and runway are usable
  • Minimal damages reported

Mitchell, Grenada's prime minister, said the island's northernmost parish, Saint Patrick suffered significant damage. The parishes of Saint Andrew, Saint Mark and Saint John also suffered much more damage than the parishes of Saint George and Saint David.

"It is clear that agriculture has taken quite a battering. It is clear that many persons have lost their roofs," Mitchell said. "It is clear, in some instances, many people have lost their entire homes."

Amazon Prime Day is fast approaching, and beyond viral beauty products or hot new kitchenware, the e-commerce giant is introducing savings on travel just in time for any last-minute summer vacations.

Amazon partnered with various travel companies, including Southwest Airlines, Viator, Turo, Carnival, and others, to give Prime members early access to price cuts on travel packages, car rentals, and cruises.

In a similar move last summer fellow retail competitor Walmart partnered with Expedia to give Walmart+ members the ability to earn Walmart Cash by booking vacations.

Costco travel discounts and deals

The warehouse retailer's travel arm offers everyday savings on top-quality, brand-name vacations, hotels, cruises, and rental cars, exclusively for Costco members.

Teresita Nino has used Costco to book vacation packages and told ABC News how she saved on international deals.

"My last trip that we booked was to Saint Lucia and we ended up booking the airfare and the hotel -- I ended up saving about $700," Nino said of her experience using Costco. "Nine out of ten times is Costco Travel is always giving me a better deal overall than other travel companies."

Access to Costco's travel deals require a paid membership as an extra perk for customers.

"The travel savings are the cherry on top -- but it's not necessarily the most lucrative benefit," McGrath said. "In these membership programs, you have to take the value of membership as a whole rather than just joining to save on travel."

A Bonding experience: 45 years ago, James Bond movie boat chase was on St. Lucie River

amazon river cruise ships

This news is likely to leave some of Port St. Lucie's critics both shaken and stirred: James Bond was here.

Not only was he here, the debonair superspy did battle with one of his greatest cinematic foes, a metal-toothed giant named Jaws, in a waterway better known for fish camps than firebombs.

The scene played out on the St. Lucie River's North Fork. In screen time, it lasted only about four minutes.

During that brief period, the movie's producers were able to cram in most of the elements essential to a Bond movie. There was a boat chase, with Bond pursued by several baddies, including the aforementioned Jaws. There were explosions. Spectacular jumps and crashes. Gunfire. An abundance of gadgets that Bond, then played by Roger Moore, used to even the odds.

About the only Bond movie trademark that's missing from the scene is a scantily-clad woman, plotting to betray the hero or profess her undying love to him.

James Bond was in Port St. Lucie, believe it or not

That's right ― all of this happened in Port St. Lucie, the supposedly sedate center of the Treasure Coast. You know, that place where nothing interesting ever happens?

Well, it did happen. Port St. Lucie is inextricably linked to one of the American film industry's best-known and longest-enduring franchises.

'Moonraker' filming made a big splash in PSL

The movie in question was " Moonraker," the 12th adaptation of author Ian Fleming's unflappable and indestructible British secret agent. The movie, released in theaters June 29, 1979, turns 45 this year.

The plot centers around Bond's investigation of the mid-air theft of a space shuttle, which eventually leads him to the Amazon River.

Only it's not really the Amazon. It's the St. Lucie. The Treasure Coast river's mangrove-lined banks provide a rough approximation of the Brazilian jungle, with an assist from some movie-making magic.

No spoilers here, for those who might want to watch or re-watch the movie. However, the scene's ending definitely required Hollywood help. Local viewers will be saying: "Well, that part definitely wasn't filmed on the St. Lucie River."

According to accounts from the St. Lucie News Tribune, about 65 to 75 people worked on the production crew for the scenes filmed locally. Crew members stayed at the Jupiter Hilton while on location.

Movie was escapist fun, not high art

Most of the filming was done near the North Fork Marina, not far from Prima Vista Boulevard. According to the News Tribune, production costs ran about $185,000 per day, with the shoot taking several weeks to complete.

General Development Corp. was paid an unspecified amount of money for providing access to the filming sites.

Strelsa Schreiber, who wrote a column called "Port St. Lucie Potporri" for the News Tribune, considered the filming work a momentous occasion in the city's history.

"Now that the company filming 'The Moonraker' has departed our shores, I am convinced that at least a part of Port St. Lucie and its residents will never be quite the same again," Schreiber wrote in a column published Feb. 7, 1979. "And if the wildlife along the banks of the St. Lucie River could but speak, I am equally sure there would be repeated mutterings of 'What fools these mortals be!' "

So was "Moonraker" a great movie? Probably not by most standards.

Some Bond followers consider the movies Moore made to be too silly or campy in comparison to the more-serious ones before and after them in the series.

Following its release, the News Tribune published a short review blurb about "Moonraker" Aug. 12, 1979:

"This is is the most illogical, ridiculous, senseless Bond film of all ― but it's still great fun, stylish, witty and full of extraordinary gimmicks and special effects. Ignore the plot, just sit back and have a good time."

Apparently, a lot of people did. "Moonraker" raked in more than $200 million at box offices worldwide.

Movie is gone, but not forgotten

Despite Schreiber's prediction, life did return to normal in Port St. Lucie in due time.

However, nearly a half-century after the movie's release, there are quite a few people in the community who have memories associated with the filming.

When Port St. Lucie city government published a Facebook post about the movie in late May, several residents shared their memories about watching the filming, or encountering remnants of props left behind after the shooting wrapped.

Some reported meeting members of the cast and crew. Others said they were involved in the production in some way.

For example, David Palm said his father's fabrication shop, Big Daddy Welders in Fort Pierce, was asked to make boat ramps needed for the jumps in the scene.

"One of Roger Moore's assistants came into the shop and asked if I could make a floating ramp that would support a boat going about 40 MPH to jump the ramp," Palm wrote in reply to a Facebook comment. "We used the sketch they provided, however the prop manager underestimated the strength in materials and used one sheet of 1-inch thick plywood for the ramp surface. The boat hit the ramp at approximately 35 MPH and broke the one-inch plywood surface. We recommend a using two pieces of one-inch plywood, and the result was very successful."

Some commenters on the city's Facebook post noted a section of the river is still referred to as "Moonraker Bay." Eddie Hamrick, owner of River Lilly Cruises, mentions the filming work as one of the points of interest on his company's river tours. Hamrick said there's a group of Bond enthusiasts that makes an annual trip along the river to visit the site.

The city didn't hold a special event celebrating the anniversary of the movie's release this year. It isn't too early to start planning for the 50th anniversary, though.

A chance for PSL leaders to showcase the river

By then, the city's Port District should be completely built out and ready to serve as a host venue.

Imagine the possibilities: A James Bond lookalike contest. A Jaws lookalike contest. A boat parade along the stretch of river used in the filming.

Moore and Richard Kiel, the actor who played Jaws, are deceased, but maybe one or more of the surviving cast members would be willing to return as guests of honor. Surviving members of the production crew could give talks about how the local work all came together. Maybe someone will build a replica of Bond's ingeniously equipped vessel.

Not every community can lay claim to being part of the James Bond legacy. Port St. Lucie shouldn't let this opportunity slip away, like a certain well-known spy making yet another narrow escape.

High fashion on the water.

French fashion house Dior has always been about style, but now it’s also focusing on luxe experiences, as it brings back the Dior Spa Cruise this summer from July 3 to 14, with sailings through the heart of Paris, departing from Port Henri IV in the fourth arrondissement.

Calling itself “an exceptional wellness retreat cruising on the Seine,” the company is offering two different categories of treatment . The treatment cruises allows guests to choose from seven varieties of two-hour cruises (including one hour of treatment), which are €680 (about $742) per person. Among the choices are the Dior Prestige High Precision experience, which includes “redefining the facial contour, mouth, and eye areas,” while getting rid of tension and stimulating cell growth in a reverse-aging experience. There's also the Constellation treatment, a “multi-sensory journey of holistic massage, slow and enveloping strokes promising to help you completely unwind and relax deeply," per the company's website.

In the fitness category , six two-hour cruises are being offered for €280 (about $305), with each including an hour-long class that’s either a detox flow; yoga flow; Pilates flow; HIIT workout; mobility; or respirology and postural stretching, depending on the sail time.

Those looking for upgraded experiences can opt for the four-hour Croisière Soin & Wellness, for €960 (about $1,048), which combines the two experiences.

The pop-up cruise is timed to the beginning of Paris Couture Week with the sailings all taking place on a yacht named Stunning Excellence , which has been decked out in Dior’s famous blue-and-biege toile de jouy pattern, according to Women’s Wear Daily . On board are four single and one double room, used for treatments, as well as a reception room stocked with Dior products.

When the guests aren’t in their treatments or fitness sessions, they’re welcome to relax on the 1,290-square-foot top deck, which has a juice bar, pool, and lounge chair, as the boat sails past some of Paris’ most iconic sites like the Notre-Dame, Musée d’Orsay, and Grand Palais, the fashion trade publication reported.
