Very responsive

We realized the morning of our trip that we did not have transportation from Liberia airport to our hotel near Tamarindo arranged. They were VERY quick to respond and confirm via email. Were waiting with name on sign outside the doors, assisted with luggage and stopped at a grocery on the way to the airport and escorted us. Price wise was cheaper than a taxi or private transportation.

Provider will not accommodate people with any disability. Service was not provided due to a registered service dog with proof of necessity. I was denied service and told to charter a private shuttle or taxi due to my service dog being to large and because of other people being uncomfortable or having allergies. I provided documentation that my dog is hypoallergenic breed and is accustomed to travel on airplanes busses and all public services due to the nature of my need. The service was denied. I was discriminated against with no consideration.

We booked private shuttles to take us from the San Jose airport to Nosara and back. They were on time and the drivers were friendly. The return trip from Nosara back to the airport was a little frightening. The driver passed other vehicles on double lines and drove very fast on curvy mountain roads. We had to ask him to slow down, which he did. Overall service was great.

I gave Tropical Tours 5 stars, but they so deserve more! Honestly, they are awesome! First, they took us from Punta Islita to Cabuya, which is an unusual 2.5 hour drive. An amazing local driver did such an awesome job! Then, our group of 18 had booked them to take us on several excursions and again, awesome, personal drivers! Then, we booked them to take us from Cabuya to the Liberia airport, and again, we had the nicest and most personal driver! Please booked Tropical tours every chance you get!!

Drivers did not communicate well with passengers. No explanation of how to switch from Montezuma shuttle to the ferry then to the next shuttle except handing us tickets and pointing to ferry. The second driver allowed a passenger to smoke right next to the open shuttle door with the wind blowing the smoke inside.

This was a really good shuttle service. We did the ~5hr trip to Santa Teresa from Nosara and it was well-organised. I booked and paid in advance. The driver arrived just a few minutes after the scheduled pickup time, but that’s very normal here as they are picking up other passengers, so don’t worry! The ride was comfortable and the driver was really helpful. I’d recommend! My only point of note is that sometimes you have to change buses on your journey (don’t worry, it’s very common and they wait until the other bus has arrived), but it would be good if they told you that in advance of your trip so that you are aware. Not knowing this can leave you a bit blindsided but there’s no need to worry.

11 Things You NEED To Know About Shuttles in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an amazing country full of once-in-a-lifetime tours , spectacular waterfalls , and wildlife galore, but it’s not the easiest to get around. Planning your transport can be pretty stressful, especially if you don’t know much about the country and its road conditions. 

Not everyone wants to rent a car in Costa Rica , and using public transport can be difficult and time-consuming, especially for longer journeys. For that reason, many travelers planning a Costa Rican holiday turn to shuttles to get around.

We’ve traveled to Costa Rica countless times and we even lived there for a while! We’ve booked shuttles often and always had good experiences with them. So if you’re wondering whether or not using shuttles to get around Costa Rica is the right option for you, this blog is here to help you decide.

We’ve compiled all of the need-to-know info about shuttles in Costa Rica to help you plan your trip!

1. About shuttles in Costa Rica 

Shuttles are small, white buses you’ll see all over Costa Rica. If you’ve ever done a group tour in Costa Rica or elsewhere in the world, chances are you’ve traveled in this type of vehicle!

The Costa Rican tourism industry really knows what it’s doing and so they’ve established a very strong shuttle network to make it easy for tourists to travel all over the country. 

The shuttle services in Costa Rica are very reliable and can take you pretty much anywhere. You can book shuttles online , and private or group options are available. We use them all the time when we travel in Costa Rica, and they’re one of the best ways to get around if you don’t want to drive here.

2. When is the best time to use shuttles in Costa Rica?

There are several reasons to take a shuttle in Costa Rica . Overall, it really comes down to your preferences and what works well for your trip. To be honest, they’re very safe and reliable so taking a shuttle is rarely a bad idea. 

You don’t want to drive 

Overall, driving in Costa Rica is safe, but the roads can be bumpy and unpredictable. The potholes are huge! You also sometimes come across river crossings with no bridge, which can be risky without a 4×4. 

Due to patchy cell service, navigation can also be tricky outside of major cities. If you’re the kind of person who struggles with paper maps and gets stressed out if you get lost, it’s probably best to take a shuttle. 

Driving at night can also be difficult due to a lack of street lights, uneven roads, drunk drivers, and poor signage. Short trips in cities are okay, but overnight drives are a bad idea. 

We’re not saying that you shouldn’t drive in Costa Rica, but it’s definitely understandable if you don’t want to. 

You are limited on time 

Shuttles are great if you’ve only got a short amount of time to explore Costa Rica . Taking a private shuttle is usually faster than driving yourself because the drivers know exactly how to handle the Costa Rican roads, and they can find the fastest routes without getting lost.

And shuttles are DEFINITELY faster than public transport in Costa Rica. Public transport is okay for short journeys around one area, but not for getting around the whole country. The buses tend to be unreliable, which can be frustrating and time-consuming. 

More remote areas also don’t tend to have good public transport networks, so it can be very difficult to get around. It can be hard to plan your route and there’s often a lot of waiting and changing buses involved, which takes a lot of time away from your trip. 

You arrive or leave late at night 

We really don’t recommend driving far at night in Costa Rica. If you arrive or leave late, it’s definitely better to take a shuttle for a couple of reasons. 

The roads in Costa Rica tend to be poorly lit and given all of the potholes, this can create big problems if you’re driving a rental car. You also need to be careful about wildlife in the middle of the road when driving near mountains or forests. 

Drunk driving is also unfortunately a big issue in Costa Rica. Naturally, there are more drunk drivers out late at night and this, combined with the difficult road conditions, can be a recipe for disaster.

Finally, nighttime is when most thieves and carjackers operate, so it’s just safer to take a shuttle. If you want to rent a car in Costa Rica but your flight gets in early or late, we recommend taking a shuttle from the airport and picking your vehicle up the next day.

You’re traveling in a large group

Most rental cars have a maximum capacity of five people, so if you’re traveling in a large group, you’re probably better off using private shuttles than renting two cars. Private shuttles are usually more spacious and comfortable than shared shuttles because it’s just your group inside. 

It’s likely to work out cheaper, especially if you’re staying in one or two places rather than heading somewhere new every few days. It also takes all of the stress out of getting from A to B, so we think it’s a win-win situation. 

Low-stress travel and convenient 

Using shuttles really does take the hassle out of getting around Costa Rica. As we mentioned, navigation can be tricky here and the road conditions can sometimes be challenging, especially if you’re not confident driving in a foreign country. 

You can also book your shuttles before you arrive so that you really don’t have to stress about transport during your trip.

Costa Rica is also full of incredibly beautiful places , so it’s nice to be able to sit back, relax, and take in the views as you travel around, rather than worrying about driving and swerving potholes. I mean, you’re on holiday, after all!

3. Where is the best place to book shuttles in Costa Rica?

Bookaway is the best because they’ve got the most choice. You can find shuttles from all companies in Costa Rica, and they have the broadest selection of routes. We’ve also found that we get the best prices by reserving shuttles online with Bookaway . 

We also like booking with Viator because they have a generous cancellation policy and a buy now, pay later option, so it gives you a lot of flexibility. However, their selection isn’t as wide as Bookaway’s, but it’s still worth checking. 

4. What is better, private shuttles or group shuttles in Costa Rica?

It depends on how many people you’re traveling with, and how much luggage you have. 

If you’re traveling alone, as a couple for a honeymoon , or in a small group, then the shared group shuttles are fine. However, they can be cramped, so you should think about a private shuttle if you’re in a group with more than five or six people. It should end up costing the same, or even less than a shared one!

A private shuttle can also be better if you have lots of luggage, as there may not be room for all of it on a shared shuttle. 

5. Do you need to book shuttles in Costa Rica in advance? 

Yes, you should book them in advance, especially from December to April. This is the busiest season in Costa Rica and so they can book up weeks in advance. You should book your shuttles before you arrive, otherwise, you might struggle to find one! 

Even outside of the busy season, we still recommend booking in advance as it will give you more choice. Plenty of companies on Bookaway offer free cancellation, so you can still adjust your plans if necessary.

6. Can you take luggage on shuttles in Costa Rica?

Yes! Just like flying on an airplane, most companies will let you have one large bag and one day bag. Fortunately, unlike airlines, they are flexible and won’t charge you the Earth for extra bags. If you’ve got more luggage you can message them to see if they have room for it onboard the shuttle. 

However, if you have loads of luggage with you, a private shuttle might be a better option. This is especially true if you’re in a group where everyone has multiple suitcases. 

7. Are shuttles safe in Costa Rica?

Yes, they are. Safety in Costa Rica is top of mind for the tourism industry and all drivers must have a special license to drive a tourist vehicle. You don’t need to worry about moonlighters and sketchy drivers, because they’re all professional and know the roads well. 

If you do notice your driver driving erratically, say something to them. Most drivers are friendly and want you to feel comfortable! 

8. Can you take small children on shuttles in Costa Rica?

Yes, you can but you may need a car or a booster seat for kids who are:

• Aged 12 and under
• Are up to 57 inches (145 cm) tall
• Weigh up to 79 pounds (36 kg)

Babies under the age of one have to sit in rear-facing car seats and kids aged 6-12 usually sit in backless booster seats. Fortunately, you don’t need to stress too much about getting the right kind of seat when taking a shuttle because most companies offer them. After all, they’re a legal requirement, so they could get in a lot of trouble for not doing so!

Just make sure that you contact the company ahead of time about needing a car seat. Tell them the age and size of your child so that they can provide you with the right seat for them, and then they’ll handle it all from there. When you go through Viator or Bookaway , you can usually contact the shuttle company right after you book your ride. 

9. Is public transport reliable in Costa Rica? 

No, it’s not. 

Public transport is okay to use on shorter routes in touristy areas, but it’s a lot more difficult for longer routes and in remote places. For example, it’s really hard to travel the Nicoya Peninsula using public buses and it takes SO much time. 

We really don’t think that using public transport is worth the time that it takes away from your holiday, especially if you’re only here for a short trip. There’s so much to see and explore in Costa Rica , and you’re much better off using your time to experience all of the country’s natural wonders rather than waiting for a bus!

10. What is cheaper, taking shuttles or a rental car in Costa Rica?

It depends on your trip. 

A rental car in Costa Rica can cost less than $80 USD per day including full coverage insurance. Meanwhile, shuttles usually cost $45 USD to $60 USD per person, although prices depend on your route and do vary a bit between companies. 

If you’re staying in one place in Costa Rica , then a shuttle will probably be cheaper. You can take a shuttle to and from the airport, and then make short journeys using public transport or taxis. (Just remember, public transport should only be used for short journeys!).

If you’re traveling solo around Costa Rica, a shuttle will still be cheaper. If you’re traveling as a couple, it probably works out about the same once you factor the cost of gasoline into the equation. Plus, we think that the added convenience of shuttles makes it a good option for couples.

However, if you’re traveling around Costa Rica as a group of three or more, renting a car is the more wallet-friendly option. If you’re traveling with a group of three, you’ll be spending $100 to $150 USD per trip, so you’re better off renting a car. And when you’re traveling in a group of four or five, driving becomes even cheaper. 

11. Is taking shuttles in Costa Rica worth it?

Yes, we loved traveling around Costa Rica by shuttle. It’s convenient and very low-stress, so we would definitely recommend it. It’s also very affordable if you book online with places like Bookaway or Viator , particularly for solo travelers and couples, and it’s one of the safest ways to get around.

Highlight tour was incredible.

We just got back from a week in Costa Rica touring with Christian and Sol Tropical Tours. It was one of the most amazing vacations we’ve had – and we’ve traveled a lot! We stayed at an RCI timeshare called Villas Palmas and we signed up for the 5-day tour with Sol Tropical. We also added an extra day on top of that. Every single day was full of laughs, adventure, amazing scenery, and knowledge. Christian, our tour guide, quite literally made our vacation!! We did an ATV tour, zip-lining twice, whitewater rafting, visited two volcanoes, a night hike through the jungle, a boat safari, and spent the day on one of the most amazing beaches ever — and more! And all through that, Christian made sure we saw sloths, snakes, monkeys, learned about the gorgeous flora and fauna of the area, taught us about history, geography, and everything else that we would even think to ask about. We were there with our three teens and they all said Christian felt like part of our family. Nobody wanted to leave. I highly recommend this company and in particular, Christian, for ANY excursions in Costa Rica.

Amazing adventures.

We are first timers in Costa Rica and I picked an RCI accommodation from their web facility to use up some points. The coastal resorts were very attractive but required pricey all inclusives and did not allow children. We figured we’d rent a car or hire a guide on various days and seek what we found in YouTube. We got here late to Taranova-Villas and it seemed kind of industrial with a few eateries, motels, and a casino within walking distance In daylight it was pretty residential just a bit off the hiway. Taranova provided the shuttle to and from the airport.

The nxt morning, a Monday breakfast was held in the sunny courtyard and Mark hosted a presentation of the daily tours and options. The apprehension of getting around in a busy city and outlands, often mountainous, vanished as the program offered by Sol Tropical included something to cover most everything any tourists, especially newbies, could fit in within the 6 days, stay.

Christian, our guide, clearly explained the activities, what to bring and wear on each excursion, meals included, exertion demands and options, etc., but mostly he is a young, highly educated degreed naturalist well-versed in the flora and fauna of Costa Rica. He took pains to warn us of any dangerous bugs and plants, and was patient making sure everybody got a peek of what we came across using a laser pointer and a spotting scope. In addition, Chris is an accomplished photographer and videographer, even using a pricey drone to fly over rapids and the forest canopy.

The meals were representative of local cuisine and offered many choices in the clean eateries. Restroom stops were adequate and special stops were made at fuel stations, etc. when ya gotta go…

Our chauffeur, Umberto Happer, clipped along on hiways and twisty mountain roads, sometimes a bit choppy, in a 23 passenger van, and we had room when fellow riders didn’t hog seats for their baggage. Small to medium backpacks, shared when possible, were optimal, as we did scarf up souvenirs at a few places, so space got used. The van got up to 19 tourists on the most crowded day. If you are leggy, avoid the seats over the back wheel bubbles.

Some of used our last day to relax and use up supplies, and the small pool at the condos was most welcome. Get your phone service set up for international, but wi-fi at the condos was slow but worked ok. It seemed I didn’t need to change currency any place we went. Some knowledge of Spanish is handy, but Chris and Happer are always nearby. The tours really filled the week with experiences and an understanding I really doubt we would have attained on our own.

Wow! What an amazing experience I had with Sol Tropical Tours. If you want to truly learn the Costa Rican way, use this company! They take you to all sides of Costa Rica so you get to see many different parts of the country, they worked hard to make each day different with awesome sights and fun activities, and they also take you to true authentic restaurants so you can eat delicious food to make you feel truly apart of the culture.

Outstanding tour company.

Our 5-day Sol Tropical tour package and experience was outstanding in every way. From the excellent Monday morning information breakfast to the final tour on Friday. Christian was our tour guide and far exceeded other guides that we have had – in other countries – in the important ways. He is a Costa Rican local and takes great pride in showing and representing his country. He is a college-educated Naturalist and it shows. Christian was punctual, kept to the tour schedule, approachable, engaged, and professional at all times. Each day was a different adventure, locale, and/or activity to do. Mind you, from Taranova Palmas, where we stayed, the van ride is typically quite long. The shortest is 1 1/2 hours; the longest is 3 hours. But Christian plans stops and meals along the way, thereby breaking up the ride. The cost for the tour package and/or the cost for individual tours was in line with typical tour costs. But, the added value – by far – were the meals that were included in the tours. Five lunches and one dinner. These were NOT a boxed lunch with a sandwich, chips, and drink. All meals were full sit-down local restaurant meals with local cuisine and entrees. We were allowed plenty of time to enjoy them and to socialize with other members of our tour group. When I returned home and was reviewing our final vacation budget, I was very happy to calculate that the amount of money we actually spent on meals were dramatically less than what I had estimated. I couldn’t have picked better restaurants for these lunches and dinner myself. There is nothing more satisfying when on vacation than to return home feeling like you got the best bang for your buck. And that is just what my family got with Sol Tropical Tours.

Simply travelicious.

I would highly recommend touring with Sol Tropical. We were able to customize a tour itinerary that included an over night in Monteverde and two nights in Manual Antonio. Touring with our guide Christian was fantastic; he knows how to find all kinds of animals, is knowledgeable about everything and is passionate about his country and his tours. The meals included were great, local and Costa Rican. Mark and Christian made touring easy and enjoyable. We typically do things on our own but having a guide in Costa Rica is definitely the way to go, we were able to see and learn so much more than could have done on our own. The tour group size was small which we were looking for. We visited the first week in August and it was great, much less busy than high season. The weather was fine and the rain did not negatively impact any activities or the trip; if you are going to the rain forest it is going to rain. If want to experience true Costa Rica with an awesome tour guide, I highly recommend Sol Tropical.

Gross incompetence & negligence

This is the most unprofessional, incompetent and dangerous shuttle service I have ever used. The driver was constantly on his phone whilst driving, either talking or typing. He did not wear a mask. The speed limit was frequently exceeded and his overall driving style can only be described as reckless. The shuttle was also totally overloaded with people having to sit on pop up seats and luggge in the aisle. AVOID!!

Costa Rica offers tourists some of the most lush greenery on Earth, breathtaking beaches, and countless options for those who love adventure. There’s certainly no shortage of activities or world-class places to stay, but unlike many tourists who can book their flight and leave the rest to spontaneity, foresight and planning are central for the 12.5 million (and growing) people who travel with disabilities every year. 

Costa Rica first turned its attention towards accessibility in 1996, and over the last two and a half decades has steadily made improvements to make its best sights and tourist destinations welcoming for everyone. 

This guide sheds light on some of the best that Costa Rica has to offer in accessible travel, including where to stay, how to get around, what to see, and which tour operators to tap for your visit.

Hotels and Resorts

Tabacón thermal resort & spa.

This boutique resort and spa has panoramic views of La Fortuna’s lush greenery. Resort board member Mario Mikowski said the resort recently added “an experiential wheelchair tour through the resort” and “remodeled the main pool so that guests in wheelchairs can access the swim-up bar.” There are property-wide access ramps, including to the resort's adults-only Shangri-Lá Gardens. You can also pick up a one-day pass to access the property. Rates start at $376/night.

Bosque del Mar

Melanie Marsell of accessibility-minded diving tour group Dive the Americas says Bosque del Mar’ s “garden suite rooms are the ideal choice” for the accessible traveler looking for beachside accommodation on one of Costa Rica’s most accessible beaches. There are wide pathways to all major property amenities and easy access to the beach. This property is close to several parks and its Niromi restaurant infuses Costa Rican flavors into international favorites. Rates start at $181/night.

Los Altos Resort

Los Altos Resort ’s rustic suites have unbeatable panoramic views of the rainforest, Manuel Antonio National Park, and the Pacific Ocean. All suites are accessible by elevator. According to Marsell, getting to the resort’s amenities is easy, as they offer an accessible shuttle to the restaurant and ramped pool. For culinarily-minded travellers, there are 27 restaurants within a half a kilometer of the resort. Rates start at $366/night.

Amor Arenal

For accessible travelers seeking romance, Amor Arenal ’s name says it all — it’s a hotel for lovers. There are two handicap-accessible rooms with private plunge pools with stunning views of the Arenal Volcano. According to Marsell, a lift can be requested for easy access into and out of the plunge pools. The property has a fixed ramp pool and the main pool with wet bar has an accessibility lift. Rates start at $548/night.

Cala Luna Resort

For accessible travelers with wellness in mind, Cala Luna has an extensive range of wellness and spa services, including Tibetan singing bowls, sound baths, wave drums, massage, vitality treatments featuring a traditional Chinese heater called moxa, plus reiki and aromatherapy. According to Marsell, “all of the facilities are on the ground floor with easy access” and Tamarindo beach is five minutes away with an accessible ramp. Rates start at $342/night.

Outdoor Activities and Nature

Lankester botanical garden.

For orchid lovers, Lankester Botanical Garden in Cartago cannot be missed. The gardens are home to more than 3,000 species of plants, with nearly 1,000 being native and exotic orchids. The 27-acre botanical garden has wheelchair-friendly paths, and the gardens have wheelchairs available for rent to tourists.

Tortuguero National Park 

Many tour operators offer handicap accessible tours of Tortuguero National Park , reachable only by boat or plane. The national park has a mix of beaches, canals, lagoons, and wetlands make it an excellent visit for bird and wildlife watching, turtle nesting, and boating.

Manuel Antonio National Park

In February 2018, the accessible El Manglar trail opened in Puntarenas Province’s Manuel Antonio National Park . Built over a mangrove, the trail spans from the park’s entrance down to Espadilla Sur Beach and connects to existing trails. The park features white-sand beaches, rainforests, and hundreds of wildlife species.

Arenal Volcano

The “La Peninsula” zone of Arenal Volcano National Park in La Fortuna is a completely accessible trail area of the park, which features an active volcano. It’s renowned for its wildlife, and tourists will have an easy time spotting howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, tapir, and various bird species.

Sky Adventures Arenal Park

For adventure-loving travellers, Sky Adventure Park ’s Arenal location offers wheelchair accessible zip lines. The views at this location include the Arenal volcano, Lake Arenal, and primary rainforest. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush on your next trip to Costa Rica, this is an accessible must.

Museums and Culture

Pre-columbian gold museum.

Located in San José, Costa Rica’s Pre-Columbian Gold Museum has gold pieces and artefacts dating back to 500 A.D. The museum is a part of the Museos del Banco Central, which has exhibitions about numismatics, archeology, and visual arts.

The fully wheelchair accessible Jade Museum houses the largest collection of pre-Columbian jade artifacts in the world. There are more than 7,000 items on display, most from 500 B.C. and 300 B.C.

The museum is wheelchair accessible and features a butterfly garden alongside exhibits about Costa Rica's natural history, anthropology and archaeology. The former fortress in San José was converted into a museum in the mid-20th century.

The Town of Sarchi

The capital of artisanal crafts in Costa Rica, the town of Sarchi is a small, handicap-accessible Alajuelan town. It’s also renowned for its oxcarts, which town residents would decorate with bright patterns and colors. Today, an oversized, hand-painted oxcart pays homage to this legacy and is a can’t miss photo opportunity for tourists. 

Costa Rica has 15 accessible beaches, thanks to the work of Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible, a local organization that helps makes beaches accessible to everyone. Their Donatapa campaign turns recyclable beach waste into colorful handicap-accessible ramps. 

In general, the western half of the country will be better for accessible tourism, as most of the accessible beaches are on the side of the Pacific Ocean rather than the Caribbean sea.

Locals recommend the fully accessible Jacó beach, which has a 206-foot-long ramp constructed out of recycled plastic. Home to a vibrant surfing community, Jacó was the first beach in Central America to be fully accessible to people with disabilities. The beach town is also a half hour’s drive from the wildlife-packed Carara National Park, which has low-impact trails, Braille information cards, and other aids.

Dive the Americas

Dive the Americas is a travel company that specializes in dive travel planning, and they work with several dive operators that go above and beyond to ensure the safety of accessible travelers on dives. Marsell recommends booking “well in advance to ensure properly trained guides in small groups.” Dive the Americas works with Pacific Coast Divers in Guanacaste that have a wheelchair accessible boat and dive instructors that are trained and experienced in adaptive diving.

Il Viaggio is a local Costa Rican tour operator that specializes in accessible tours. They have pre-created packages, or can design something à la carte if you want to build your own itinerary, have specific travel needs, or require specialized mobility equipment.

Transportation

In San José, city buses are wheelchair accessible. Most taxis throughout Costa Rica can accommodate a folding wheelchair. The national airline carrier, Sansa, can also accommodate a folding wheelchair, but requires all passengers to board and deplane unassisted. Only some shuttles have a wheelchair ramp, so it’s important to inquire before booking to ensure that anyone who requires a ramp will be able to board a shuttle.

Several locals working in hospitality suggested bringing a cushion to help reduce the impact of the often-bumpy Costa Rican roads while travelling.

What’s so amazing about visiting Costa Rica is that you can tailor a vacation to your interests. Do you prefer to hang by the pool or spend days riding waves and building sand castles? Are rugged rainforest adventures a must, or would you like more spa time? Are you traveling with kids? (Some properties have age minimums, so that’s something to consider.)

Be honest about how much you’re willing to “rough it."

Costa Rica is a bastion of untamed natural beauty. And while it's tempting to go all in on a remote lodge, that might not be the best fit for every traveler. Before settling on a hotel, ask yourself: Do I need Wi-Fi? Is air conditioning a must? Am I OK with a long drive on windy roads?

Consider seasonality.

Because of Costa Rica’s topography and varied terrain, certain times of the year bring swings in weather to different parts of the country. Looking into this ahead of booking will help you to avoid the rainy season in the rainforest or skip the peak period by the beach.

Be mindful of budget.

Accommodations in Costa Rica run the gamut from backpacker-friendly hostels to five-star resorts. Some luxury hotels cost upwards of $1,500 a night. But you certainly don’t need to spend that much for a five-star stay. Whatever your budget, it’s possible to find a fabulous overnight.
