Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

The hotel in Bergen was in a great spot so that we could get to the ferry easily as was the hotel in Balestrand. It was a long day from Balestrand to Oslo with the scenery on the ferry, the Flam railway and the trains stunning. It was very good that there was a bus to take us from the station in Oslo to the hotel. The tours of Bergen and Oslo were excellent and the tour guide excellent. We were so lucky with the weather. An excellent trip

Organisation was exceptional. Everything ran smoothly. We were a little dissapointed in both the Clarion Hotels, although they looked fancy, the rooms were small and cluttered. The night meal in the dining room at the Clarion Hub was disgusting and overpriced, one meal sent back as it was cold, when it was returned it was inedible. we paid for premium accomodation. these two hotels would not be 3 star in Australia, maybe Europe has different standards. The other hotels were acceptable.

What people love about 7 day norwegian fjords tours.

This tour is very well curated for an introduction to Norway’s fjords and its culture. Rodrigo did an excellent job in ensuring we we able to cover as many sites as possible. Highly recommend this tour!
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

In the summer, from June to August, we set course for UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord *. This is a protected and preserved piece of paradise with towering mountain cliffs and waterfalls like the famous Seven Sisters cascading into the fjord.

Nidaros Cathedral is one of Trondheim's most famous sights

City of Kings and Palaces

This section of the voyage sees us enter the Trøndelag region of Norway, marked by crumpled hills, fields dotted with farmsteads, and low-lying coastal settlements.

Magical, medieval, and modern

Founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim today is Norway’s third largest city and a mix of historic buildings and a vibrant student population.

You’ll have three hours to explore Trondheim and its array of highlights, either by yourself or on one of the optional excursions we offer.

A must-see site of the city is Nidaros Cathedral, nicknamed “Norway’s Notre Dame” for its Gothic style and considered the most sacred building in all of Norway. Next door to the cathedral is the Archbishop’s Palace where Norway’s crown jewels are on display.

Nearby, the old city bridge Gamle Bybro sits over Nid River, marking the entrance to the old Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. The neighbourhood’s colourful wooden wharves propped up on stilts by the river’s edge now house a variety of eateries. Up from Bakklandet is Kristiansten Fort which has beautiful panoramas of the city and fjord.

Back on board

In the afternoon, the ship sails northwest, passing the ochre-coloured Kjeungskjær Lighthouse, islets, and rocky reefs. After that, we head towards charming Rørvik .

Into the Arctic

We cross the Arctic Circle early in the morning, beginning your Arctic tour of Norway. We mark the moment with a traditional ceremony that’s sure to wake you up.

Above the Arctic Circle, you can see the sun 24 hours a day in summer, while in winter, your chances of seeing the Northern Lights greatly improve.

Forces of nature

At 10:00, we call into Ørnes , near to Norway’s second-largest glacier, Svartisen. The pier here is popular for the Love Bench where sweethearts have declared their lasting romance with a padlock.

We then sail to  Bodø , the second largest city in Northern Norway, overlooked by the Børvass peaks. Admire fabulous street art or join an optional boat excursion to Saltstraumen, the world’s most powerful maelstrom.

Welcome to Lofoten

That afternoon, the ship enters the Lofoten archipelago. The 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall is a stunning sight on the horizon, as if there to welcome us.

Stamsund is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the islands and busiest between January and April when Arctic cod, known locally as skrei , swim from the Barents Sea in the north down to Vestfjord to spawn.

Come evening, when you see rows of traditional fisherman’s huts on stilts, known as rorbuer , you’ve arrived in the pretty harbour of Svolvær , the main town of the Lofoten Islands.

The Arctic Cathedral is the most impressive landmark in Tromso

Capital of the Arctic

We dock into Harstad  just after 07:00. You can go for a peaceful early morning stroll around town.

The ship will then continue to Finnsnes which connects the beautiful island of Senja via the impressive Gisund Bridge. Keep on the lookout for a variety of seabirds with several colonies nearby, including puffins.

Gateway to the Arctic

We then sail to the historic Arctic exploration capital of  Tromsø where you’ll have four hours to explore the city or join an optional excursion.

Along the waterfront you’ll find Polaria, a centre exhibiting environmental research in the Arctic with a small aquarium. Take your pick from the many shops and restaurants in the city centre, including Mack Brewery and favourite local watering hole Ølhallen pub. There are also cafés offering delicious cinnamon buns where baristas create innovative coffee art. Across the fjord from where the ship docks, you should be able to see the iconic Arctic Cathedral with its beautiful stained-glass mosaic.

Leaving Tromsø in the early evening, we head north for the trading post of Skjervøy , founded in 1622. On our way, we’ll pass the Lyngen Alps which rise majestically from the sea.

The North Cape Globe Monument under the Northern Lights

Norway’s Northern Frontier

The ship reaches the town of Hammerfest on the island of Kvaløya early in the morning. In summer, the island has herds of reindeer migrating here in their thousands.

You’ll know we’ve reached Havøysund when you see the wind turbines of the landmark Havøyglaven wind farm which produces enough electricity to power 6,000 local homes.

At the top of Europe

We arrive at Honningsvåg mid-morning, portal to the North Cape where a globe monument marks the top of continental Europe. An optional excursion will take you to North Cape from Honningsvåg by bus, passing herds of reindeer on the way, depending on the season.

Sámi heartlands

Near the entrance of Kjøllefjord village, look out for the striking, building-like rock formation Finnkirka, an ancient sacrificial site once used by the indigenous Sámi. You can join an optional summer excursion to meet local Sámi, learn about their life reindeer herding, and listen to joik folk songs.

Continuing north

We reach our northernmost port of call, Mehamn , in the evening. If visiting in the months of February and March, you might spot tons of cod drying on outdoor wooden racks called hjell , mainly destined for export.

The ship then sets off for Berlevåg . On the way, we pass the tall Slettnes Lighthouse, the northernmost mainland lighthouse on Earth.

A snowmobile excursion under the Midnight Sun in Kirkenes

Norway’s Eastern Edge

We call at Båtsfjord and Vardø in the night, before docking at Vadsø early in the morning.

Looking to the skies

The area around Vadsø is one of the most scenic and popular birdwatching spots in the Arctic, lying directly under the migration path of birds flying from east to west. Watch for hooded crows and sea eagles.

Near the Norwegian border

Kirkenes is just a few miles from the edge of Norway's territory. This is where your Norwegian coastal cruise ends and you’ll have travelled further east than St. Petersburg and Istanbul. We look forward to seeing you again, maybe for the Classic Voyage South next time!

Views of Hardangerfjord, Norway

Landscapes of the fjords

Hardangerfjord is one of Norway's most picturesque waterways, renowned for its lush green landscapes and fruit orchards, and as Borealis glides along its serene waters, you'll also be able to admire breath-taking scenery of craggy mountains and cascading waterfalls. Your ship will divert into the size-restricted Maurangerfjord to the thundering falls of Fureberg, so you can see them from as close as possible, while Ulvik is your gateway to Kjosfoss Waterfall and the not-to-be-missed Flam railway. From Eidfjord, do take time to discover Voringfoss Waterfall to experience it at its most powerful.

Eidfjord is the ideal destination in which to enjoy boating or kayaking on the calm, clear waters of Hardangerfjord, while Ulvik offers the opportunity to experience foraging on a tour to discover just how many edible plants are growing in the wild that can be used for nutrition. Both Eidfjord and Ulvik have spectacular hiking trails, with the latter offering spectacular views of the Osafjord.

Scenic cruising in Lysefjord, Norway

Fjord Geology

Formed over millions of years by the combination of glacial activity, tectonic forces and erosion, the fjords of Norway have been carved into deep valleys, flanked by steep mountainous terrain and hanging valleys where waterfalls cascade into the waters below. The magnificent Fureberg waterfall, located on an arm of Maurangerfjord, thunders down the steep hillside into the fjord, where your Captain will manoeuvre Borealis close enough for you to feel the spray on your face. Pulpit Rock (Preikstolen) stands over 600 metres tall, watching over you as you sail along the deep blue waters of Lysefjord, while the intriguing Kjeragbolten - a giant rock wedged between a crevice on Mount Kjerag, can also be seen.

Each of our cruises has been carefully designed for you to get the very best out of your time on board; and now you can enhance your cruise to make it even more special.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Coastal cruise in Norway

Norway in a nutshell®, flåm railway (flåmsbana), fjords in norway, aurlandsfjord.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo

After collecting your luggage and leaving the airport, make your way to your accommodation in  Oslo  city centre. You could opt to take a taxi or use public transport, but for a more direct and comfortable ride, we could arrange a private airport transfer for you.

If you arrive early in the day, spend the afternoon walking through the city. You could stroll along the  Karl Johans  gate main street, along the  Aker Brygge  marina and past the beautiful  Oslo Opera House.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 2: Railway Journey to Trondheim

This morning, head out early to Oslo Central Station to begin your half-day (6.5-hour) journey aboard the Dovrebanen train.

This train route passes over the  Dovre mountain  plateau, through historic towns and nature preservations. You’ll witness incredible variations in terrain and altitude along the way. The journey concludes with a steep, curvy descent down to the lowlands where  Trondheim  is located.

Spend the afternoon discovering historic Trondheim, including  Bakklandet , an idyllic neighbourhood full of culture, and  Nidaros Cathederal . Other highlights of the city include Ringve Museum and its gardens, Munkholmen island, and the charming Old Town Bridge.

Spend the night in Trondheim.

Day 3: Exploring the Coastline of Norway

Today, you will embark on a spellbinding coastal cruise, the best way to discover the epic beauty of Norway’s shore. After breakfast, head to Trondheim Harbour, where you will board either a Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages cruise ship.

Get settled into your cabin, then head to the lounge or viewing deck to enjoy views of Trondheim Fjord and Hitra Island as the ship begins its journey south.

During the evening, the cruise ship will dock at the city of  Kristiansund,  and then the town of  Molde . As you travel to each stop, you’ll pass through some breathtaking coastal landscapes. The final port of the day is a brief stop in  Ålesund  after midnight.

Spend the night aboard the coastal cruise.

Want to know which cruise you will be joining? Check out sailing departures per tour .

Day 4: Sail to Historic Bergen

During the night, your cruise will call at the towns of Torvik, Maløy and Florø as the route weaves through islets and stunning landscapes.

Finally, you’ll come into view of your destination –  Bergen . Here you will disembark to enjoy some leisure time in the “Capital of the Fjords”. Despite being an international city, Bergen has all the charms of a small town.

Here you’ll find  Bryggen , a city quarter that is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, with remarkably preserved old houses. Elsewhere, explore the lively fish and flower market, board cable cars offering stunning views, and discover great city museums.

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 5: Norway in a Nutshell by Land and Sea

Today, you embark on one of the most scenic parts of your adventure so far. First, say goodbye to Bergen and catch the early Bergensbanen train, travelling past majestic mountains and plunging valleys to the town of Voss.

At Voss, change to a bus through more vibrant landscapes to  Gudvangen  harbour. Here, you will board a spellbinding 2-hour fjord cruise to  Flåm , sailing through  Nærøyfjord , the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage site is part of  Sognefjord , Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Prepare to be awe-struck by mighty peaks, tumbling waterfalls and small farms dotting the mountainsides.

Finally, the boat sails up  Aurlandsfjord  to Flåm, a charming village, where you will spend the evening.

Spend the night in Flåm.

For a more comfortable experience, we recommend booking a luggage transfer for the journey between Bergen and Oslo.

Day 6: The Flåm Railway Experience

Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring more of Flåm, taking in its natural beauty and enjoying some of its cultural offerings.

In the afternoon, it’s time for you to experience the famous Flåm Railway firsthand. Settle into your seat and enjoy spectacular scenery as the train climbs 900 metres (2,952 feet) in just 20 kilometres (12 miles). During the journey, there will be photo stops for you to capture some images of your breathtaking surroundings. The winding train track leads to Myrdal Station, where you’ll disembark.

In Myrdal, switch to the Bergensbanen train, which will carry you over the mountainous rooftop of Norway. Along the way, you’ll pass through the charming villages of  Geilo  and Gol, before you arrive in Oslo.

Enjoy your last evening in Norway, and spend the night in Oslo.

Day 7: Departure from Oslo

It’s time to say goodbye to Norway! If your flight is in the afternoon, you could spend a few last hours shopping for souvenirs, visiting one of Oslo’s museums or just strolling through the charming city centre.

When it’s nearly time for your flight, take the Airport Express Train or call a taxi. Alternatively, we would be happy to arrange a private airport transfer for you. If you’d like to spend more time in Norway’s dynamic capital, you can easily add additional nights in Oslo during the booking process.

With this itinerary, you’ll travel from Oslo to Trondheim by train. You’ll board the Dovrebanen train from Oslo Central Station. This railway, dating back to 1921, passes over the Dovre mountain plateau and then takes a steep descent to the Trondheim lowlands.

With over 548 kilometres (340 miles) of railway, it takes around 6.5 hours to complete the journey to Trondheim.

On this tour, you will hop aboard a coastal cruise, provided by either Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages, along the Norwegian west coast. You’ll be staying in your own cabin with private facilities.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages operate along the same route on different days. Your personal travel consultant will book the cruise on your behalf in light of your tour’s start date and the rest of your itinerary.

If you are travelling on a Hurtigruten cruise: Hurtigruten ships offer a classic Norwegian experience, with cosy cabins furnished with either twin or double beds. Your room will be between 8-11 square metres (86-118 square feet) and will always include a port hole, but please note that a view from the window cannot be guaranteed.

Instead, Hurtigruten ships all offer comfortable viewing decks, dining areas and lounges. This way, you can spend your mornings and evenings relaxing with incredible views of the passing Norwegian coastline.

If you are travelling on a Havila Voyages cruise: Havila Voyages ships are the newer cruise liners on the block. Their modern cabins are furnished with either twin or double beds and are all around 15 square metres (161 feet). Your room will have a port hole and a small sofa so you can watch the views of ocean or coastline go past. Or, head up to the lounge, restaurant or viewing deck to see more of the passing fjords.

When you book your Norway adventure, your travel consultant will arrange the details of your cruise departure in light of your tour’s start date. They’ll then include all the information in your personal itinerary.

If you have a specific cruise in mind, check out our  list of Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages sailing dates  in 2024 and 2025.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages are shipping companies which transport travellers along the Norwegian coastline. Both offer incredible views of spectacular fjords and charming coastal villages as they journey towards Norway’s north or south.

That said, both companies have their own histories and distinct characters. Your cruise experience will vary depending on which company you’re travelling with. We’ve broken down the key differences below so you know what to expect on your seafaring adventure.

Hurtigruten dates back to 1893, and many of its ships were originally used to transport post. Due to the historic nature of these cruises, each one differs in size and your room’s port hole window may not have a view. Instead, you can expect a cosy cabin stay, with access to charming lounges and restaurant areas that have floor-to-ceiling windows.

Havila Voyages are a newer company, with a focus on eco-friendly and sustainable travel. Their rooms are slightly larger and have views of either the ocean or the coastline from their port holes. Just like Hurtigruten, they offer on-board facilities such as relaxing lounges, restaurants and viewing decks.

Whichever company you travel with, you’ll enjoy a private cabin with either a double or twin beds and ensuite facilities. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee your cabin number for coastal voyages shorter than 5 nights.

When your ship is in port for longer than 30 minutes, you’ll have the option to disembark. Optional shore excursions will also be available on your journey, so make sure to pre-book any activities that interest you.

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell® tour from Bergen to Oslo. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The first leg of the journey is from Bergen to Flåm. Then you’ll travel from Flåm to Oslo. The duration of both days will be around 7 hours.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

You can book an optional luggage transfer for the journey. If you do this, you’ll want a backpack for your daily essentials and one-night stay. Your luggage will be waiting for you at your destination.

If you do not book a luggage transfer, you will have to carry your bags between the train, boat and bus. All connections will be within easy reach and there will be storage available for your luggage during each leg of the journey.

On your Norway tour, you’ll stay in accommodation that’s been hand-picked by our travel experts. We’ve partnered with local businesses and selected hotels and guesthouses based on excellent ratings, comfort and our personal experience.

During the booking process, you can select whether you want Comfort Plus or Superior accommodation. Comfort Plus usually consists of standard rooms in good quality and comfortable 3-star hotels. Superior is standard rooms in 4-star hotels combined with Superior rooms in premium 3-star hotels.

You will also be able to choose between single, double or triple rooms. Please note that in Norway room types are based on European standard sizes, which means they are smaller than in North America.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you have anything specific in mind, please contact us to discuss customising your accommodation options.

By booking with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that there’s always someone there for you throughout your trip.

For support and advice during the day, you can call our office. And if anything unexpected happens outside working hours, you can reach us on our 24/7 helpline.

During your tour, there will always be a travel expert on call to handle any unforeseen situations, such as unusual weather or events.

If you have a passport from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you won’t need a visa to visit Norway. This visa-free entry is valid for up to 90 days.

Visiting from another country? You can find out whether you require a visa to enter Norway on the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Select your home country to view details. If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Travelling with your kids? No problem! You'll be able to enter your children’s ages during the booking process.

For infants (0 to 2 years old), please let us know in the details if you’d like a baby cot.

For kids 3-11 years old, we’ll automatically book an extra bed for your trip.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Norway for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore and what you want to see and do in Norway.

During the summer months, June , July and August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book a summer itinerary in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Please note that if you travel in spring, end of March through April , you’ll find that many attractions and museums are operating on reduced winter hours.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter. Travel to Norway at this time of year to see snowy mountains, cruise along frosty fjords and chase the magnificent northern lights.

If you head north in December and January , you could experience the polar night. At this time of year, the conditions are also ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.

Read more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

From Oslo in the south, Norway stretches hundreds of kilometres into the Arctic Circle. The country is so long that it spans the latitudes of 58°N to 81°N. For that reason, daylight hours vary greatly depending on where you’ll be visiting. That said, summer in Norway brings long days with plenty of daylight.

In the south, around Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, you’ll experience 15–20 hours of daylight. If you visit the north, including locations such as Tromsø and Kirkenes, you can expect 20–24 hours of daylight.

In fact, within the Arctic Circle, from mid-May to late July, you’ll experience the midnight sun. This is when the sun never fully sets.

Norway’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway .

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather in Norway. That said, because the country spans such a large distance from north to south, temperatures are likely to vary depending on your location.

For example, the west coast is usually warmer thanks to the Gulf Stream, while the far north is usually cooler.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Oslo, you can expect average temperatures around 16°C (61°F), with potential highs of 20–25°C (68–77°F). In Bergen, it is closer to 13°C (55°F) and in the north, around Tromsø, you can expect temperatures around 10°C (41-50°F)

It’s also good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page Norway weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Summertime is the most stable time of year in Norway. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days, and extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • Short and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list .

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

We recommend waiting for a confirmation from your travel consultant to ensure your travel dates are available. You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.

If you like to plan well ahead, you’ll find that it’s possible to book many tours for the following year. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which currency is used in Norway and which credit cards are widely accepted
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Norwegian speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying snacks, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything.

Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents. This will include your personalised itinerary, our Norway Travel Guide and your service vouchers. We recommend printing your tickets and vouchers to bring with you to Norway.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

These pictures may be small, but Norway’s mountains & fjords are massive.

This trip was magical

This tour was incredible and took us on adventures around Norway that we wouldn't have known to embark upon. Nordic Visitor made everything so organised and easy. This trip was magical and we are so thankful that you all helped us make it happen!

Nicole, United States

Express norway, september 2023, really enjoyed the tour.

We really enjoyed the tour. Nice introduction to Norway. On reflection we may have wanted a bit more time in a few destinations. I think this was affected by unexpected travel disruption though. It would be good if Nordic Visitor looked at incorporating the Lofoten Islands into this tour or offering an optional extension.

Janice, United Kingdom

Express norway, august 2023.

Very good, professional, skilled, updated help from staff, specifically Malgorzata. When a rock slide caused one train toute to be blocked, within hours she had us alerted and arranged on a fjord boat instead.

Merrill, United States

Job well done.

All in all a great experience. We used different means of transportation: bus, trains, ship and boat. The timings were perfect. Two trains were cancelled due to flood damage but another good alternative was given. Appreciated the upgrade we got on the last night to compensate for the few hiccups. My husband and I both work in incoming tourism so can understand the work behind the scenes. Thank you. A job well done.

Sandra, Malta

Once-in-a-lifetime tour.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime tour for us and we came away very happy overall.

John, New Zealand

Flawless itinerary.

The itinerary was flawless. Norway in a Nutshell was excellent. The only thing I would do differently is start from Bergen instead of Oslo.

7 Reasons You’ll Love An Expedition Cruise In Alaska

A laska is vast and wild, a place where travelers can explore miles and miles of remote coastlines, parks, and forests. The Last Frontier sits at the very top of the destination wish list for many people. When you go to a place that is such a special mix of impressive geological formations and fascinating creatures, it’s best to do it in a way that gets you up close. This is where an expedition cruise shines. Some places in the world are best explored via small-ship cruising. Think Antarctica, the Galapagos, the fjords of Norway, and, of course, Alaska!

I sailed on an expedition cruise to Alaska on the 186-passenger ship Ocean Victory from American Queen Voyages. Our 10-day sailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Sitka, Alaska, delivered a mix of delightful experiences that revealed why cruisers are flocking to adventure voyages.

Dozens of expedition ships have been built and debuted over the past few years, and the number of travelers taking expedition cruises has grown dramatically during the past decade (2012 to 2022), rising from just under 70,000 people to more than 367,000, with the number expected to approach 500,000 annually by 2027, according to a market report by Cruise Industry News .

I have taken expedition cruises on a variety of cruise lines, including incredibly active and immersive off-the-grid voyages with UnCruise Adventures in places like Alaska and Costa Rica, as well as luxurious sailings around the Galapagos with Silversea and to Antarctica with Ponant.

My trip on the small ship Ocean Victory represented more of a light expedition adventure. This is an ideal journey for people of all ages and ability levels who are seeking their dream trip to Alaska but want to avoid the large crowds of mass-market ships.

Here is why.

1. You’ll See The Best Wildlife On An Expedition Cruise

As we pulled away from Vancouver on Ocean Victory , I could feel the sense of anticipation among the 124 cruisers onboard as they wandered the outer areas of the eight-deck ship and made new friends. Members of the expedition team, led by Liz Gifford, introduced themselves and explained what we would be doing during our voyage.

The animals were going to be the primary entertainment, of course.

We spotted seabirds, Steller sea lions, Pacific white-sided dolphins, and a large pod of humpback whales bubble-net feeding as we sailed for two days from Vancouver toward Ketchikan.

Brown bears, mountain goats, orcas (and several other whales), otters, seals, and eagles are the big ones you’ll be on the lookout for. Cruisers also get a chance to spot a wide array of marine birds and other creatures in the tidal zones and rainforests like sea stars, anemones, and banana slugs.

Pro Tip: Book your expedition cruise for May or June if you want to see the best wildlife activity. Bears are awakening from hibernation and very active feeding along the shorelines. This is also when birds fill the skies and forests and flowers come into bloom. The colors and sights are most vibrant as Alaska awakens during the spring.

2. You’ll Get A Chance To Explore Remote Fjords And Historic Port Towns

Small expedition ships can reach deep into fjords or navigate to remote bays and islets that the large cruise ships can’t reach. This means that you’ll be up close to glaciers — and often get a chance to move even closer via Zodiac tours or kayaking outings.

Our skiff tour into Tracy Arm Fjord during our cruise on Ocean Victory brought us up close to South Sawyer Glacier. The ship stayed in the bay all day as we went out to see mountain goats scrambling along the hillsides, waterfalls streaming down the cliffs and blue ice calving from the glacier wall and crashing into the water with the sound of thunder.

We also kayaked around Punch Bowl Cove during our full day at Misty Fjords National Monument. This day was pure bliss. The weather was clear and sunny, and we were the only people in the majestic fjord surrounded by steep granite walls and birds lazily tracing circles overhead. The only sounds while we paddled — other than chatter among our small group of kayakers — were gentle swooshes of the kayak strokes dipping into water that was as smooth as glass.

At Port Malmesbury, we got into the waters to see bald eagles, otters, and whales. American Queen Voyages offers a mix of expedition days and port visits with shore excursions on its trips to Alaska, and we enjoyed port stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, and Sitka, where the program included excursions like forest walks and museum visits. In Wrangell, for example, passengers on Ocean Victory joined a cultural discovery tour to visit a Tlingit tribal house followed by a tour of Wrangell Museum and a stop at Petroglyph Beach to see ancient rock carvings.

Some expedition lines, such as UnCruise Adventures, offer more intense activities, including long hikes and bushwhacking outings in old-growth rainforests. You can even do things like tidepooling (shore walks at low tide), snorkeling, and standup paddleboarding in beautifully serene locations.

Pro Tip: Check the lineup of activities available during the cruise itinerary to find the right expedition cruise line for you.

3. You’ll Savor Great Scenery When You Cruise In Alaska

Your expedition voyage is built around beautiful destinations, and ships like Ocean Victory are designed with spaces that seamlessly connect the inside with the outdoors. We enjoyed the top sun deck with its loungers and two hot tubs located aft of the ship. This is the perfect spot at sunset for a drink at the bar and to slide in for a soak to soothe your body after a day full of adventures.

The ship also has large glass windows in the main lounge and restaurant, as well as an Observation Lounge on Deck 8 and innovative bow viewing platforms on Deck 5. Additionally, there are open deck areas on Decks 5 and 6, so passengers have a great variety of spots to see the outdoors or pop outside to watch birds or whales, as we did many times during our voyage.

You can borrow binoculars for use throughout your cruise, and Ocean Victory features scopes on tripods placed strategically in the observation areas so you can zoom in on the shoreline or scan the skies for animals.

Pro Tip: Be dressed and ready to go to the outer decks when announcements are made that animals are in sight. You might see bears feeding at the shoreline or humpback whales bubble-net feeding. Carry around your camera, binoculars, hat, and jacket in case conditions call for them, so you can quickly move to a nice viewing area. Also, consider booking a cabin with a balcony or direct access to an outer deck. This way, you can fully enjoy the outdoors and have opportunities to spot wildlife and incredible scenery at all times.

4. You’ll Share Intense Experiences With New Friends

Small-ship cruise travel brings together groups of well-traveled people who share common interests. There are no casinos or production shows onboard most traditional expedition ships.

Ocean Victory offers a main lecture lounge where naturalists and guest lecturers give talks on subjects like humpback whales, the indigenous people of Alaska, or the Tongass Forest. We’ve made new lifelong friends on these trips, and you’re likely to, as well, because you meet like-minded travelers with similar interests, such as a passion for active travel and learning.

It’s a blast to join trivia contests and sing-a-longs after dinner or just sit and chat about each day’s wonderful activities with new friends over dinner or while having drinks at the bars or lounges.

5. You’ll Wander Beyond Your Comfort Zone

An expedition cruise is a great time to try something new. It might be your first time in a Zodiac zipping around in the waters with the wind in your face and riding the gently bucking waves. You might catch a splash, too, if you’re seated right up front. Try kayaking. Get on a paddle board or venture out on a hike into the forest. You’ll be on the lookout for bears, deer, and birds. You might even get the chance to jump in the frigid waters if your cruise ship offers a polar plunge. We did the Punch Bowl Plunge on Ocean Victory to cap our day at Misty Fjords, and dozens of people gleefully participated.

Pro Tip: Pack the right kind of clothes. Typically, you’ll want to have the proper footwear, rain gear, and you’ll need clothes that you can wear in layers. Consult the pre-trip packing list provided by American Queen Voyages, and take it to heart.

6. You’ll Enjoy An Immersive Way To Learn Something New

The expedition leaders onboard these cruises have a passion for the environment, travel, and active adventures. On Ocean Victory , we had a team of 18 naturalists, kayak guides, and Zodiac drivers who together had a wealth of information. Many had degrees or certifications in topics covering marine science, conservation, or backcountry survival.

Our crew on Ocean Victory hosted daily enrichment talks, hands-on science sessions, and informal post-dinner “after hours” chats. We learned about plankton, algae, humpback whale migration, seals and sea lions, and how to tie a series of knots. A guest lecturer also joined the cruise to give talks about indigenous culture in Alaska and the art and history of the Haida and Tlingit people.

Of course, you’re constantly experiencing wonderful new things off the ship, such as engaging with your guides and new friends when out in the wild spotting animals, or visiting quirky towns and villages in Alaska. We had great chats with residents in Petersburg and Kake to learn what life is like in such a remote and harsh part of the world.

7. You’ll Be Inspired To See Even More

Once you’ve visited Alaska on an expedition cruise, you’ll be hooked. It’s one of my favorite destinations (likely my favorite). The continuous animal activity, beautiful scenery, and daily chance to get out to do something active and exhilarating make it a breathtaking experience.

American Queen Voyages offers expedition cruises to Alaska between May and September on Ocean Victory .
