Your Ultimate Off-Season Travel Calendar

Everybody loves a summer holiday, but more often than not, traveling during the peak tourist season can be a bit of a drag. Here’s our guide to your off-season gems to discover.

travel off season

Summer may be the best time to travel when it comes to the weather, especially in Europe. However… the flights you want to book are overpriced, the places you want to stay at are more expensive, and the attractions you want to visit are flooded with tourists. In the off-season, you don’t have to worry about dealing with any of those downsides. Sure, you won’t get the best weather, but booking your trip in the low season comes with a bevy of benefits: cheaper airfare, wallet-friendly hotel rates, and fewer crowds.

If you’re ready to jump on the off-peak travel bandwagon, the only question left to answer is: where should I go in the off-season? That’s where this guide comes in! We’ve curated a list of some of the most popular travel destinations and their corresponding low-season periods so you can start planning your off-peak adventure for 2023 and beyond!

For the most part, Europe’s off-season runs between November and March .

Of course, temperatures and weather conditions will vary by region; if you visit in, say, December, you may have to contend with freezing temperatures and snow flurries in Northern Europe, while Mediterranean countries like Greece offer a fair amount of sunshine and relatively mild temperatures.

No matter what destinations you choose to visit (aside from ski resorts), you’re guaranteed to find fewer crowds and bargain-worthy prices when traveling to Europe during the winter months.

Here are a few great cities, countries, and regions to choose from for off-season travel — those places where you’ll get the most bang for your buck and have a fantastic overall experience:

  • All of the continent’s most popular and iconic cities (e.g., Venice, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, or Amsterdam)
  • Finnish Lapland

Southeast Asia – June to October

As you can imagine, Southeast Asia plays host to several climates to match its incredibly diverse landscapes. Many travelers avoid the off-season in this region completely, but — with a little extra planning and preparation — it can actually be a fantastic time to travel here.

Just remember: the off-season months typically coincide with the rainy season. Monsoon rains usually occur between June and October in most parts of Southeast Asia, but weather patterns can vary drastically depending on the destination.

During this time, your trip can be disrupted by torrential downpours, or you might get lucky with sunshine and short-lived periods of rain — it’s a chance you take traveling during the low season!

Here are the off-season months for some of Southeast Asia’s top hotspots:

  • Bali – April to June
  • Bangkok and Northern Thailand – May to October
  • Thai Islands (Gulf of Thailand) – Gulf of Thailand October to December and the Andaman Sea June to October
  • Vietnam – May to September
  • Cambodia – July to September

Japan / China / Taiwan – November to March

The best time to escape the crowds in China , Japan , and Taiwan is during the winter months, as long as you’re not traveling to wintry destinations or ski towns like Harbin and Hokkaido. As these destinations are pretty far north, it can get quite cold, however, so for trips to Tokyo, Seoul, or Beijing, your best bet is to dress for the occasion and check the weather reports thoroughly.

India & Sri Lanka – May to August/September

India and Sri Lanka experience varied weather conditions, with certain regions (such as Goa, for example) being dominated by rainfall at any given time of the year.

With the exception of tropical states like Florida and Hawaii, the low season in Canada and the USA falls between the winter months of November and March/April.

Los Angeles, Vancouver, and other West Coast destinations offer milder temperatures throughout this season, while cities in the northeast (New York, Toronto, Boston) transform into real-life winter wonderlands.

Prices skyrocket during winter holidays and school holiday periods, so it’s best to avoid Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Spring Break if you don’t want to deal with inflated hotel rates and crowded attractions.

In Mexico and the Caribbean , the off-season period begins shortly after Easter and lasts until the middle of December, just before the holiday season is in full swing.

  • United States – November to March
  • Hawaii – April to early June and September to mid-December
  • Canada – November to April
  • Mexico – May to mid-December
  • The Caribbean – May to mid-December

Given its gargantuan size, it should come as no surprise that there’s a whole host of varying climates and microclimates occurring on this vast continent throughout the year.

Generally speaking, South America can be divided into two regions, the first being Chile , Argentina , Uruguay , and southern Brazil, where the low season falls during the chilly winter months. Please be aware that here, it’s winter from May to August! The other region is Colombia , Peru , Ecuador , and Bolivia , where the weather patterns are dictated by wet and dry seasons rather than significant temperature changes. In Brazil, for example, there may be temperatures as low as ° C 15.8 / ° F 60.4 in Foz do Iguaçu, in the south in July, while Salvador, Bahia up north will still have approx. ° C 23.7 / ° F 74.7 degrees.

If you don’t mind packing a few extra layers and waterproof gear, you’ll love traveling outside of peak season here.

  • Colombia / Peru / Ecuador / Bolivia – December to March
  • Mach u Picchu – October to February (The Inca Trail closes every February for essential maintenance.)
  • The Galapagos Islands – May to June and September and October
  • Brazil – May to September
  • Chile and Argentina (excluding Patagonia) – June to August

In many African destinations (especially safari hotspots), low-season travel comes with loads of perks: the Kalahari Desert offers fantastic game viewing during the off-season; the low season in Kenya means better deals and cheaper international airfare; and Tanzania’s birthing period falls during the off-peak months, so you’re more likely to see lion cubs and other baby animals.

Plus, you’ll get great value for money, you won’t have to compete for space at wildlife sightings, and the rainy season brings lush landscapes — which makes for excellent photo opportunities.

It may be wetter during the low season, but if you can bear a bit of rain, there are a number of fantastic benefits that come with off-peak travel on this continent.

North Africa

  • Morocco – November to February
  • Egypt – June to August

Central/East Africa

  • Kenya & Tanzania – March to June and October to December
  • Ugand a – April and May
  • Rwanda – April, May, and November

Southern Africa

  • South Africa – April to September
  • Namibia & Botswana – December to April
  • Moz ambique – March to June

Australia – June to August

Most people want to experience summer Down Under, but visiting during Australia’s winter (June to August) will save you cash on everything from your airfare to tours and bucket list activities.

And, since the weather is still pleasant and warm in many places around the country, choosing to travel during the off-season comes with some serious advantages.

New Zealand – June to August

The off-peak winter season is similar in New Zealand : you’ll find far fewer crowds at all the popular tourist spots (besides the ski resorts dotted around the country, of course).

Prices go down; hotel rates drop, and, in some destinations, you might feel as though you have the whole place to yourself.

Things to consider when booking an off-season holiday

Not every destination is suited to off-season travel; you definitely don’t want to be trekking in the Himalayas in a foot of snow or sweltering in Northern Australia in 45-degree heat.

You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons and do some additional research before you travel to any particular destination during the low season. Weather, seasonal closures, and safety are three of the main things to keep in mind while you’re planning your trip.

Our Most Popular Off-Season Travel Destinations (+ When to Visit)

by Brandi Gannon Nov 2, 2023

Off-season travel in Maravilla, Costa Rica

While summer and holidays may be the conventional vacation times, exploring off-season travel can be a game changer if you prefer avoiding the crowds.

It’s the perfect chance to explore popular destinations when most visitors have dispersed. Plus, off-season travel gives you the opportunity to discover unique experiences that are often overshadowed (or are very expensive!) during peak seasons.

Here are some of our favorite places to visit in the off-season, when to plan your vacation, and what to do during your stay.

Visit Europe – Especially Paris – During November or From January Through March

Paris - Arc de Triomphe

Tourists flock to cities all over Europe in the spring and summer, and Paris is no exception. Visiting almost any other time of the year means fewer crowds, better hotel and flight prices, and shorter lines to see landmarks like the Louvre.

However, we’d also recommend skipping December. Visiting Paris during the holidays is an incredible experience that’s worth planning at least once, but if you aren’t a fan of crowds, it can be pretty stressful.

As long as you pack a warmer wardrobe, Paris in winter has all the magic of Paris in summer with less hassle!

You can lace up your skates and glide across the ice at one of the temporary ice rinks set up around the city during the winter season. While some are only around in December, others can be found well into March – like the most popular rink found in front of the Hôtel de Ville.

Winter is the perfect time to savor rich, hearty, traditional French cuisine. Treat yourself to classic dishes like coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, or a comforting bowl of French onion soup. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of Bordeaux wine or Champagne! The city is also known for its charming cafés, and winter is a great time to get cozy and indulge in a warm beverage.

Rhine River Gorge - European River Cruising

If you’d like to visit more than just Paris, planning a river cruise on the Rhine offers fantastic value with the option to see multiple European cities on one luxury cruise. One of our Travel Advisors, Kelly, recently did a Rhine River cruise and shared all the details. Read more about her AmaWaterways experience here !

Lastly, keep in mind that the off-season travel period doesn’t just apply to Paris. Most of Europe is less touristy in the fall and winter, and you may find temperatures in the southern cities much more pleasant than in the warmer months.

Enjoy Off-Season Travel in the Caribbean in Late April Through Early June

Off-season Travel - Jamaica All Inclusive Vacations

Off-season travel in the Caribbean reveals a quieter, more authentic side of the area, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local charm and experience the region at their own pace.

When the temperatures get cooler in the United States, that’s when most people escape to the beautifully warm water of the Caribbean. Luckily, temperatures remain relatively stable year-round, so you’re not missing out if you visit in the summer.

One important factor to note is that the least-busy months are actually late June through September, but that’s because it’s also peak hurricane season. Visiting in late April through early June lets you skip most of the winter and spring break crowds while still staying safe.

Here are some popular vacation destinations and what to do when you visit!

Jamaica – Explore the majestic Blue Mountains, discover Jamaica’s delectable cuisine, visit a bioluminescent bay, and check out some local music festivals. You’ll have plenty of all-inclusive resorts to choose from during your stay!

The Dominican Republic – Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial, take advantage of the calm waters and enjoy some watersports, or hike to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean.

Cancun – Discover the ancient Mayan civilization by visiting nearby archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza, Tulum, or Coba. The off-season is also a great time to visit Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve or take a boat trip to Isla Contoy. And of course, the cenotes and beautiful beaches can’t be missed!

St. Lucia – St. Lucia is famous for its iconic twin peaks, the Pitons. Take advantage of the off-season to hike Gros Piton or Petit Piton for breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Caribbean Sea! Visit crowd-free, secluded beaches and schedule a zipline tour for aerial views of the rainforest.

Plan a Trip to Mexico Year-Round – Depending on the Location!

Xochimilco

While popular destinations in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula generally follow the same travel patterns as the rest of the Caribbean, other parts of the country are a little different. Here’s a quick guide on Mexico’s other popular destinations and when to visit for fewer crowds.

  • Visit Huatulco and Oaxaca in April, May, September and October – These months offer milder temperatures that make exploration a lot more pleasant. The only thing to note here is that late October and early November can get crowded during the Día de Muertos celebration (but experiencing the holiday is definitely worth the crowds in this case)! Consider staying in Dreams Huatulco Resort & Spa .
  • Visit Mexico City in January through September – Mexico City will always be busy (it’s the second largest city in Latin America after all!), but you can avoid a lot of the crowds by skipping the holiday celebrations that take place in the latter part of the year. It’s important to note that winter nights can get pretty chilly, so pack appropriately!
  • Visit the state of Chiapas in December, January or June – While it may be a little more rainy, the popular city of San Cristobal de las Casas is no less magical during the off season!
  • Visit Los Cabos from June through September – If you’re planning to experience the area’s famous whale watching excursions, you may have to brave the high season crowds (October through May). However, if you’re there to explore and relax, the off season is the perfect time for it.

Plan a National Park Vacation From September Through May

Great Falls in Yellowstone

When most people think of visiting national parks , images of crowded trails, long lines, and packed parking lots come to mind. However, during the off-season – typically fall, winter, and early spring – these destinations transform into serene wilderness areas where you can experience nature in a whole new light.

Accommodation and entrance fees may be more affordable during the off-season, making a national park adventure more budget-friendly. Also, popular attractions that might have been fully booked in the summer could be easier to access without big crowds.

And aside from lower costs, there are other great reasons to take a national park vacation in the off season.

  • With fewer visitors around, wildlife tends to be more active and visible. It’s easier to spot animals (or even interesting plant life) without the interference of bustling crowds. The off-season provides a better chance to witness animals in their natural habitats.
  • While the off-season might bring about cooler temperatures and the occasional snowfall, it also offers a chance to witness landscapes transformed by winter. Glistening snow-covered peaks, frozen waterfalls, and mist-shrouded valleys create a unique atmosphere that can’t be replicated during the peak months.
  • Speaking of winter landscapes, national parks in the off season are a photographer’s dream!

No matter which park or season you plan to visit, one of the best ways to tour a national park is by taking advantage of an RV vacation rental service . Let us know if you’d like some help planning a trip!

16 Best Off-Season Travel Destinations For 2024

' src=

Traveling to major tourist destinations in the offseason is the best! Why? Because you can experience all the major sights without having to elbow other tourists and save loads of money as well.

Imagine experiencing no queues at the dinner tables, buying flight tickets for half the price, and not waiting for 7 hours to get into a museum. During peak season all these things can make you hate traveling while you silently wish for all the tourists to just disappear.

Smart travelers know how to avoid crowds and that’s what we are here for. Presenting you some of the best places in the world to have your amazing vacation without millions of people fighting with you for the perfect photo of the main attraction. Are you excited? We are as well, so let’s get started!

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany is a real dreamland in summer. However, this season of the year brings higher hotel costs and a slew of travelers.

As experienced travelers know, this famous Italian wine region is beautiful at any time of the year. In fact, the region’s rich and famous vineyards and local cuisine are best enjoyed in winter.

Tuscany is also known as a cultural destination because of its art and history, and you do not need the sun to appreciate these components of their culture.

The walled medieval villages of Montepulciano, San Gimignano and Pienza are even more pleasant to visit in the off-season because there are no crowds.

But Tuscany also has an adventurous side. Other activities you can do in Tuscany are,

  • Going for a long hike in the mountains.
  • Renting a Vespa and running through the countryside
  • Visiting naturally formed hot springs – Popular hot springs are Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo, Petriolo, and Saturnia.

St. Lucia – The sun-soaked Caribbean

travel off season

The hotels, attractions, and restaurants will be heavily booked and more expensive than in the offseason, so make sure that you reserve everything in advance.

June through November (The Caribbean’s hurricane periods ) are better if you want to avoid high prices and crowded beaches.

Prices on airline tickets and hotels drop for as much as 50% so this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage off. There doesn’t exist a person in the world that doesn’t enjoy the Carribean so don’t miss out on an experience of a lifetime.

Visit Fiji During Low Season!

travel off season

Fiji is a pleasant tropical destination perfect for an excursion during any time of the year. Although this utopian island Shangri-la doesn’t have any discernible “seasons”, there are certain periods of time during which more or fewer people choose to visit this incredible place.

Fiji’s “wet” or “low” season can be just as inviting as the “high” season when tourism is at its peak.

During the months of November through late April , you’ll be able to catch much cheaper flights and score completely affordable lodging, all while not sacrificing any of the sunshine you’d normally expect to experience here, and simultaneously beating the crowds.

travel off season

These are some of the perfect months to plan a visit for, especially if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing trip for Adults. The swimming pools and beaches won’t be nearly as congested, and since school is in session, there won’t be as many noisy children to kill your vibe.

Christmas break is one of the only times during the winter months where you’ll find kids running about. Falling within the first couple of months of the low season, this is the perfect time to bring the kids for the ultimate family getaway during the holidays.

All in all, if you’re craving a bit of the island life during the winter months, Fiji is a must for you.

A Sub-Tropical Getaway During Hurricane Season? Yes.

travel off season

Florida gets a bad rap during the months of August and September and as a direct result, vacations here can be much more affordable during this time.

Over 20 million people live, stay, and enjoy the state every year during the tourist dreaded “hurricane” season, when in fact hurricanes aren’t nearly as common as you’d think.

Prior to 2016, Florida hadn’t seen a hurricane make landfall in over 11 years. That all came to an end in September 2016, when Hurricane Hermine touched the coast and shortly thereafter, weakened into a tropical storm. In 2018, Florida saw the effects of Hurricane Michael along the panhandle. Although this may be enough to scare some people away during these months, you can take advantage of the cheap airfare and lodging prices. That being said, It’s always best to choose to be prepared for the unlikely, yet potentially extreme situations if they do so happen to arise.

Depending on where you are in The Sunshine State, you can anticipate rain showers for an hour or so nearly every afternoon, especially on the coast. Although this is true, it usually tends to clear up fast and things are bright, sunny, and back to normal in no time.

Purchase traveler’s insurance! This is a great option for anyone traveling under any circumstance, and it would be a smart move for someone visiting Florida during this time period.

Check with your airlines, hotels, etc. to confirm how they advise their guests of any potential dangers. Also, you can stay ahead of the game by downloading weather advisory apps to your smartphone and checking the hurricane and tropical storm information websites.

With this information at your fingertips, it’s up to you if you’re willing to make the decision to travel here during the off-season season, but if you do, you just might find yourself having the time of your life.

New Zealand – Travelling in Off Seasons

travel off season

In the offseason, everything is cheaper and in spring and fall, everything is stunning. The winter is perfect if you love skiing and snowboarding.

During the off-season, you will also have the opportunity to meet locals and you can afford to be more impulsive and not have everything booked in advance. New Zealand has a good reputation all over the world, so booking a vacation there is not a bad idea. Nature is stunning and every sporty person loves the array of activities in New Zealand.

Greek Islands – The land of sightseeing

travel off season

Yes, in the off-season you’ll miss the Mykonos nightfall, but in March still, visitors can enjoy Santorini and Athens sights with no regrets.

During this time hotel and travel prices drop largely. That’s why travelers should plan to visit it in the offseason.

Experience the amazing greek culture and food, have fun on the beach or dance sirtaki with the locals. Greece should be on everyone’s to-do list. If you haven’t been there yet, what are you waiting for? Take advantage of its off-season prices and have a trip of a lifetime.

The Bahamas – The Country without fall season

travel off season

Anyhow there is no bad time to visit the Bahamas because of year-round it’s always delightfully warm.

Tourist attractions are bustling during the high season so if you want to book a cheap excursion, have no crowds and see more with less go there in the offseason. You will fall in love with the place and will yearn to return to it once again in the future.

San Francisco – Land of four distinct seasons

san francisco- off season travel

The best time to visit is from September to Novembe r , at that time it is the warmest and there are fewer tourists than in the summer.

It also is the perfect time to go to the beach because of its constantly sunny skies but don’t underestimate the bayside breezes and pack accordingly just in case.

Spring is also nice because there is not much rain. San Francisco definitely is one of the gems of America and you should definitely not miss out on it if you travel to the USA . It’s culture and tradition definitely made a mark in the history of the USA.

New Orleans – Enjoying Mardi Gras

new orleans - off season destination

New Orleans is known for its crazy Carnival ( Shrove Tuesday ) celebration which starts just after Christmas. At that time it is really crowded but it is well worth it and you should book everything a couple of months in advance otherwise it might get sold out.

The winter is the perfect time to avoid the crowds, get amazing deals on flight tickets and cheap hotels. December and January are the coldest months so pack accordingly.

If the weather is more important to you, then we recommend you go there in spring or fall. In spring the prices increase for quite a bit but the city becomes marvelous as it gets warmer. We know you will love New Orleans and look back on the memories you have made there with joy.

Cape Cod – The Summer destination gem

travel off season

There’s immense satisfaction in exploring Cape Cod during the winter time. Expert voyagers can try hiking and biking to experience the full fun of the period between October and November.

You also don’t have to wait to for a plate of seafood on the table and the meals are extremely cheap. In autumn, travelers can explore Wellfleet Oysterfest to get a taste of the local culture.

Costa Rica -Travelling in Green Seasons

travel off season

When crowds have gone back to schools and to work, smart tourists can start packing to get a better deal. The rain and clouds create beautiful green landscapes and transparent waterfalls throughout the downtime.

Enjoy pleasant moments in nature and find joy in the afternoon rain while resting in a hammock. How could you not enjoy that, Costa Rica definitely is a must go in the offseason. Nature is beautiful, people are friendly and the prices are low, seems like the perfect package.

Florence – The City with full of crowd

travel off season

In the off-season, the crowds are gone entirely. The downtime starts in November and ends with Easter. Vacationers can get pleasure from rainy evenings and connect with locals all throughout the season. Except for Christmas and New Year eve, the prices go down for almost a half which is amazing for budget-oriented travelers.

You will definitely not regret visiting Florence in the offseason and you will be completely amazed at the beauty of the Renaissance architecture.

Italian culture is something you have to experience and their cuisine is something you won’t ever forget. What are you waiting for, book your flight tickets to Florence right now!.

Bali -The Romantic Honeymoon destination

travel off season

Everything turns green at that time so you will definitely enjoy the scenery. You will be the only person visiting the sights so it will be perfect for taking photos for Instagram. Traffic is also non-existent in those months. Bali has been referred to as the paradise on earth, so it must be amazing. It is perfect for reconnecting with yourself and experiencing the world on a deeper level. Go to Bali and experience it yourself!

There is plenty of things TO DO in Bali  and you won’t know what to do first, even when visiting in low / rainy season.

Byron Bay, Australia

travel off season

Though Byron is popular throughout the year, there are exciting things to explore in the offseason. The beginning of wintertime is awesome because it isn’t too cold to swim but surfing becomes way more enjoyable. Spring from September to November is also amazing.

Why? The weather is dry, the temperatures are pleasant, the prices go down and there are countless activities you can do. Australia is on most of the people’s bucket lists, we think it is time for you to cross it of yours! Though the country has a very strict decree for hunters, they’re allowed to take part in Red Deer hunt game throughout the year.

So an opportunist won’t miss the chance to take part in such a thrilling game with his best binoculars for hunting and will make his/her journey more meaningful.

Prague, Czech Republic

travel off season

Spring and early fall are perfect as well. The climate is chillier than in the warmer summer months but there are fewer crowds and cheaper hotel rates. Spring and fall, however, offer clear skies and sunny weather.

There are still some tourists in the spring so still prepare yourself and book everything in advance. We know you will love Prague so tell us how it was once you come back from your trip!

Cape Town, South Africa

travel off season

January to April is the best time to visit the city as the summer is just ending. December to February is the peak summer season when you can expect busy nightlife, crowded beaches, and a warm vibe.

By February most of the tourists leave making it perfect for saving money, chilling on an uncrowded beach and experience less wind. From July to September it is perfect for watching whales along the coastlines as well.

It can be a bit dangerous in some outside areas so don’t do foolish things if you don’t have to. Other than that Cape Town can be the perfect vacation destination.

The secret to a budget-friendly trip? Travel during the off-season. You may have to make a few sacrifices, but at half the cost and without all the crowds, off-season travel is worth considering. From the European vacation you’ve been dreaming about to that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa , check out these off-season destinations for every month of the year.

January – Barcelona

travel off season

As one of the most popular destinations in the world, Barcelona is never completely free of tourists. Nonetheless, strategically planning your trip in the off-season could be in your best interest. January sits between the major holidays of Christmas and Easter, and city streets, restaurants, and Gaudí’s buildings will be less clogged than normal. Temperatures will also be relatively mild, so you can still plan on sipping Rioja on the terrace as long as you pack a jacket.

February – New York City

travel off season

If you’re dreaming of a weekend getaway to Manhattan, a trip in February will do quite nicely. As long as you steer clear of Valentine’s Day, you’ll find cheaper accommodations and more affordable flights in the winter. You’ll likely have to bundle up to go outside, but that just means you’re tough like a New Yorker. For the Big Apple’s greatest hits, visit the Museum of Natural History and MoMA , catch a show on Broadway, stroll through snowy Central Park, and grab a New York slice.

March – Amalfi Coast

travel off season

If you’re in need of a quiet respite by the sea, visit the Amalfi Coast in March. The early spring on the Italian seaside is pleasant and slow with many hotels and restaurants closed for the season. Not all the coastal towns are completely dead, however, and with a little planning, you’ll find plenty to enjoy. The good news? Without the on-season crowds, the coastline’s famous winding roads will be easier to navigate and the area’s gorgeous hiking trails will be yours to explore.

April – Colorado

travel off season

April is the start of a little thing called “mud season” in Colorado, which truly isn’t as bad as it may sound. If you stick to the low-lying Colorado plains in cities like Denver and Fort Collins, you won’t feel the effects as much. In fact, you’ll likely enjoy some sunshine and warmer weather to explore these vibrant cities. Head towards the mountains, however, and you’ll begin to notice the effects of spring snowmelt. If you're looking for skiing or hiking, this won't be your season. Depending on the snowpack, Colorado ski resorts typically close in early-to-mid April. What this does mean, however, is you can find some great deals on accommodations and spa treatments, so you can still enjoy a relaxing weekend away.

May – Alaska

travel off season

If your schedule can swing it, May is a great time to make that coveted trip to Alaska. The weather may be cooler, but it’s also a lot drier with fewer rain showers than the rest of the summer. While it’s not the cheapest time to visit (that would be November and December), it is less crowded than June, July, and August. May is also a good time to see wildlife in its natural habitat. From bears on the first salmon run to humpback whales near Juneau , the Alaskan wildlife should be out and about for your viewing pleasure.

June – New Zealand

travel off season

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere and don’t mind spending the start of your summer in a cool, rainy climate, then June in New Zealand is perfect for you. Marking the beginning of New Zealand’s winter, and smack-dab in the middle of its rainy season, you won’t get picture-perfect weather in June. However, you will get flights that are way more affordable, cheaper car and RV rentals, and discounted winter rates for lodging. June is also early ski season and while the snowpack may not be as reliable as July or August, the slopes will be open with fewer crowds and shorter lift lines.

July – South Africa

travel off season

There’s no doubt that a South African safari is a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list kind of trip . Witnessing a pride of lions basking in the sun or watching an elephant sway past your jeep is the kind of travel we should all aspire to — thrilling, memorable, and a peek into a world we know nothing about. That being said, safaris are quite expensive and flights to South Africa aren’t cheap. If you’re ready to make the leap, however, July will keep your costs a bit lower. The colder, drier season means you’ll have to bundle up for those early dawn jeep rides, but it also has some perks. The bush will be brown and barren — making it easier to spot the “big five” while you’re there.

August - Goa

travel off season

Goa's popular coastline clears out during monsoon season, transforming from a beach party to a quiet getaway in a matter of months. August is later in the rainy season, meaning it averages cooler temperatures (75 degrees Fahrenheit) and less rainfall (20 inches total). While this type of weather isn’t ideal for hitting up the beach, it does come with some major perks. Rooms in the touristy, upscale hotels are much more affordable and monsoon season is a great time for hikers to explore Goa’s inland forests. Plus, the added rainfall supercharges the region’s abundant waterfalls, adding some oomph to the already beautiful landscape.

September – Caribbean Islands

travel off season

Looking for a cheap trip to the Caribbean ? Book during hurricane season. October is typically the stormiest month, so if you go a little earlier in August and September you still enjoy major price drops in flights and accommodations. If you’re willing to take the risk, you could luck out with fantastic weather and no crowds. If such a gamble isn’t your thing, consider a trip to the southern Caribbean to Aruba or Grenada, which lie outside the Hurricane Belt. Either way, don’t forget the trip insurance on this one.

October – Argentina

travel off season

Considered to be shoulder season in South America, October is a gem of a month that isn’t as popular with the tourist set. Marking mid-spring for the Southern Hemisphere, the chill of winter has evaporated and the country’s greenery is beginning to emerge. Buenos Aires is especially lovely this time of year — the days are long, the temps are mild, and the flowers at the Palermo Rose Garden are in peak bloom. Farther south, Patagonia is just opening up from its winter hibernation, which means it will be less costly (and colder) than the popular summer months of January and February.

November – Hawaii

travel off season

From volcanic hikes to waterfalls in the jungle, the Big Island’s diverse ecosystem is ripe for adventure. And since rainfall in the Pacific is typically higher in November, travel costs in Hawaii dip at this time of year. Don’t let the prospect of rainy season deter you, though. Temperatures are still warm and the rain showers are brief. The island’s two airports average different amounts of rainfall, so take note when planning your itinerary. Kona is more touristy but drier, while Hilo has a laid-back, local vibe and more rain.

December – Iceland

travel off season

Off-season travel in December is a bit tricky since the holidays cause rates to spike later in the month. However, if you’re not averse to cold weather, this is a good time of year to make an Iceland trip. Between the vast, white lowlands and the snow-covered glaciers, Iceland’s arctic landscape was meant to be seen this time of year. Temps will hover in the 20s, but with the appropriate winter gear , you’ll still be able to explore Iceland’s many outdoor offerings. Plus, the lack of daylight and the dry weather make this the best time of year to spot the elusive Northern Lights .

Insider Today

Summer may be coming to a close, but this year that doesn't necessarily mean the end of vacation time. With more people working from home and many kids able to learn from just about anywhere with virtual school programs, some travelers are looking to extend the usual vacation season into the fall and winter.

The good news is that areas that typically see an influx of tourists in the summer months often have great savings on hotels in the low season. Plus, the fall and winter months frequently see fewer crowds, which is a huge plus for social distancing.

If you're wondering if hotels are safe to stay in right now , consider that experts have noted it's largely about how many other people you come into contact with. While vacation rentals may be the safest option right now due to no interaction with other guests, many hotels have updated their cleaning and safety protocols to give travelers peace of mind. We've included updated policies for each hotel on our list below, but it's also wise to read up on individual procedures yourself, as well as cancellation policies , before booking.

It's also vital to keep in mind that without a vaccine, there's no guarantee of safety when it comes to travel right now. We always recommend following CDC guidelines, wearing a mask in public areas, washing your hands, and practicing social distancing. You should also read up on state and local guidelines and be extra wary and cautious if you're traveling from out of state, particularly to or from a hotspot area.

With all that in mind, if you are looking to snag a great hotel rate, look to places like beach towns and less touristy cities to get exceptional savings throughout the fall and winter. We've rounded up some of the best off-season hotel deals across the US, with savings of up to $600 per night when compared to high season rates for the same rooms.

Read on for 10 of the best off-season hotel deals for fall and winter, priced from low to high.

The Pros and Cons of Off-Season Travel

For many destinations around the country — and the world — the off-season has arrived. This brief period of time — usually brought on by the start of the school year and less-than-ideal weather — can often be the best time of the year to travel. Why? You'll find more deals (both for hotels and flights) and fewer crowds. But traveling during this period often requires a little extra planning. For all of the benefits an off-season vacation has to offer, there are also some inconveniences. U.S. News got the scoop from a few travel-planning experts about where to go and what to avoid during the off-season.

See: Simple Strategies to Save on Your Next Vacation

"The opportunity for cost savings is one of the greatest advantages of traveling in the off-season and there are many destinations and vacation options that deliver on that," said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president of travel and publishing for AAA. Because hotels and attractions need to lure more travelers during this slower period, they frequently offer discounts, both for lodging and nearby attractions. With fewer crowds, you can enjoy a more intimate experience at some top attractions in a destination, which may be impossible during busy peak times.

"It's important to remember that sometimes a destination's peak season is not actually the best time to be there; rather, it's the time when school is out in locations nearby, and that's why the crowds arrive and rates go up," said Wendy Perrin, TripAdvisor's travel advocate.

Mark Jaronski, vice president of global communications for Visit Orlando, agreed. "Orlando's off-season generally follows school calendars, meaning that travel deals tend to be more available when the majority of schools are in session."

Weather tends to be a major drawback during off-season travel. "We recommend purchasing travel insurance in case inclement weather disrupts your trip," Sutherland said.

Additionally, some attractions, national parks, shops, restaurants and even resorts may be closed or close early during these slower seasons. But as a tradeoff, some destinations boast unique experiences you won't find any other time of the year: In Santa Barbara, California , you'll catch the gray whale southern migration from November through March (while also enjoying mild California temps). Meanwhile, in Charleston, South Carolina , it's oyster roast season from December to February.

"I love finding smart, unique reasons to go in the off-season," said Perrin, who shared that in August her family traveled to Mexico's Riviera Maya. "It may have been low-season in terms of hotel rates, but it's actually the very best time of year to swim and snorkel with whale sharks. And that was the highlight of our trip."

See: Your Travel Insurance Questions Answered

If you're planning a trip to Europe , consider a wintertime visit . Though the region's cultural capitals will be chilly (think Paris , Rome , London ), these locales offer plenty to do indoors. If you're looking to stay stateside, you've got plenty of options here, too.

Sutherland and Jaronski recommend theme park-heavy Orlando, Florida for shorter lines, slimmer crowds and lower lodging rates during the city's off-season (the months of May and September). Brave Chicago 's winter chill and you'll be rewarded with budget-friendly hotel and flight prices, plus plenty of indoor activities (including Chicago Restaurant Week ), according to Michael Samm from Choose Chicago. The Finger Lakes region in New York is often considered a summer destination, but the area also boasts affordable skiing and lodging in winter and a variety of winter festivals, according to Valerie Knoblauch of the Ontario County Tourism Bureau.

Most travelers flock to Colorado 's ski resorts over the winter holidays (which can stretch from Christmas through President's Day), but there are plenty of days in between and early in the season —  considered "off-peak" —   where deals can be found . If you time it right, you can enjoy the same winter activities, while scoring better lodging rates, ski-free deals, cheaper airfare and shorter lift lines.

"Our guests who travel to Vail during these time periods say that they find the mountain is wide open, it's easier to get reservations… and they have more time to do the things they want," said Davy Ratchford, Vail Resort's director of marketing.

Perrin warned against traveling to any islands during the off-season. "The smaller the island, the fewer its resources and the more weather-dependent your activities," she said. "On most Greek islands, for instance, restaurants are outdoors, so if you're there before mid-May or after mid-October, you could be chilly at dinner."

Additionally, ski resorts may close entirely during certain months in fall and late spring or early summer, leaving you with little in the way of activities, aside from hiking and exploring the area on your own.

"The key to planning a successful off-season vacation is research and understanding the pros and cons for traveling during this time of year," said Sutherland, who also advised managing your expectations along with determining what your priorities are for the trip.

Off-Season Travel in Europe

travel off season

James O'Neil/Getty Images

A summer vacation, for many, is the highlight of their year. Heading to sunnier climes, enjoying the beach or an ice cream in the shade of a beautiful cathedral: it is the definition of what traveling is about.

But for others, the best time to travel is in the off-season. You'll hear seasoned travelers extolling the virtues of September-May travel so often you probably know them by heart: fewer tourists, greater cultural options and mingling opportunities with the locals, more relaxed atmosphere, cheaper airfares and hotel rates, and the lack of that summer swelter.

Though there are benefits to high season in Europe: it rains less, there's maximum daylight, it's easy packing light, and there are abundant tourist resources, off-season travel still trumps high-season travel for many adventurers.

Places to Go

First, let's define some commonly agreed upon off-season and shoulder-season dates:

  • High Season: (Peak Season): Summer, Mid June-August
  • Shoulder Season:  April through May, some say through mid-June, September through October.
  • Off Season: November through March

Seasoned travelers base their destinations on seasonal considerations. For example, you might not particularly fancy eating the traditional tourist favorites of Germany, Switzerland or Austria in summer; the food is too heavy for the heat. But on a crisp fall day, you might be more than happy to walk the black forest or cruise the Rhine, then return to your hotel, take a hot bath, and go downstairs to a medieval wood-beamed room with roaring fire to eat mounds of sausages and spaetzle while drinking lustily from a flask of homemade Riesling.

Here are a few tips for some experiences that are unique to the quieter months.

  • September in Europe
  • October in Europe

Truffles give off the sexiest odor on the planet, according to some people. Why not go root some out yourself? Go to Italy's Piemonte to sample the fabulous food and hunt yourself out some of your own tubers at La Casa del Trifulau:

  • Food and Wines of Italy's Piemonte Region

Or, if you just wanted to stay at a truffle hunter's B&B, plan a November trip to Tra Arte & Querce and have a  truffle breakfast  each morning (and more for dinner if you wish).

If you're in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, you can participate in a fall truffle hunt in October-November at Al Vecchio Convento, which also features a very fine restaurant, cooking classes, and a once a week dinner buffet with traditional dancing to local Romagna music.

If just buying and eating truffles interests you: Go to a truffle market in France that welcomes visitors. This is best done when you have rented an apartment so you can enjoy the experience of slicing your truffle over your morning scrambled eggs.

A Wine Festival in Tuscany

Yes, people in Europe make a big deal over wine, especially after harvest is over. People tend to dress in medieval costumes and celebrate as they have since way before the advent of television and other time-frittering endeavors.

And, if you really want to get into the lifestyle, you could take a course in Ancient Painting Techniques or Etching, and live in Italy for a bit. Falling over Florence? Try  L’Accademia D’Arte .

For the Contrarian - the Polar Circle and Iceland

Why not go against the grain and choose a tour that doesn't promise to warm the cockles of your vacationing heart? Say, a tour of Denmark and Greenland where you can choose between a wide variety of Winter pastimes as early as early November, Like a Dog Sledge Experience or a Reindeer Safari, not to mention an overnight in an Igloo? Besides, when people ask where you went on vacation you can say "Kangerlussuaq" (or maybe you can't).

Or why not visit Iceland in the Autumn? You could take in Iceland by the light of the Aurora Borealis in October.

Greenland is also a nice place to visit for the cool traveler.

Ardor and Armor

Autumn is turtle mating season on the Greek island of Kos. You may well ask, "so what?" but the truth is: a decent recounting of the spectacle is one of those things that'll make you a hit at parties for years to come, especially if you can imitate the sound the male makes (let's just say "a passionate hissing") as he clunks against the female's almost impenetrable armor.

Rain and Reduced Sunlight

For Mediterranean countries, fall starts the rainy season. Over the ages, many cities have found ways to deal with the inconvenience of a daylight rain. The Italian city of Bologna features a huge network of arcaded streets. You can walk from one side of town to the other without getting wet. Medieval Europe featured houses with overhangs, it's one of the ways you can tell the older parts of a city. Old towns also offer seductive cafes. Pop in and nurse a coffee, soda, or warming snifter of brandy while waiting for the rain to taper off. Or use your railpass to take a scenic train ride.

And, yes, the off-season in Europe is marked by fewer hours of sunlight. If you shudder at the thought of walking "downtown" in a city after dark, consider that European city centers are quite a bit safer than most American ones at these hours, because European culture favors convivial meetings in public places along with moderate alcohol consumption.

Packing Tips

  • Pack light Easy when your daily wear is shorts and a shirt. Things get tricky when the weather cools. The key is layering. Bring a light undershirt, long sleeved shirt, sweater if it's going to be cold, light windbreaker/rain jacket for the rainy days.
  • Use compressor bags  Eagle Creek makes some excellent compressor bags. You'll find that you can squeeze 40-50 percent of bulk out of a sweater with these bags.

When, Where, and Why to Travel in the Off Season

Gina Pantina

The Off Season

Table of Contents

The Winter Travel Season can sometimes feel like a Yo-Yo Game: it starts out with High Season during the Holidays, then slips into Off Season for January and most of February, then back up to High Season for the week of Winter Break, then back to Off Season for most of March, until Spring Breaks start to ramp up, and it’s back to High Season again.

Depending where you live, and what your travel style is, you may be hunkered down for winter, fully embracing the hibernation mode of the season, or you may be itching to get out into the sun, wherever it’s shining warmest and brightest, to escape the winter chill.

Jamie by Irish Castle

One of the best ways to beat those Winter Blues is definitely to think ahead to the sunnier months of May, June, July and August, and map out your Summer Adventures (if you remember back to our Vacation Planning Timeline, January and February are the months when you should be planning your Summer Travel in order to get the best prices and also the widest selection of options). Remember, typically, it’s usually ideal to plan vacations four to six months in advance, except for cruises and specialty trips, which should be planned a year or more ahead of time.

Jamie and Castle

But also, don’t discount planning for travel in these in-between months, too; after all, these long months with short days are often the times when we need to get away the most. Welcome to the Off Season, my friends (and fear not, there are other Off Season periods scattered throughout the year, which we’ll delve into later). Here, prices dip, crowds thin, and the potential for extraordinary experiences abounds.

So, what exactly does traveling in the Off Season entail? Essentially, it means visiting a destination at a time when general tourism trends may deem it “less desirable.” But the benefits of Traveling in the Off Season often far outweigh the drawbacks, and you may even discover that taking adventures in the Off Season is your new favorite season to travel!

When Exactly is Off Season?

Finding Castles as a Family

For most destinations, the travel seasons tend to align with the school calendar, with Off Season travel occuring while school is in session, and High Season travel happening during summer and school breaks. While this seems fairly straightforward, and like it would amount to an abundance of Off Season time, the variations in school breaks (especially Spring Break), and the starts and ends of school years, make it a bit trickier to navigate into those lower prices and crowds, but don’t worry, we got you!

Jamie in Portugal

So far, I’ve mentioned Off Season and High Season, but don’t forget about Shoulder Season as well! Sprinkled throughout the year, depending on location, Shoulder Seasons are those times in between a strict Off Season (when some resorts, restaurants and attractions are actually closed) and the High Season, when tourists descend on a location for months at a time.

Often, for locals who live in a vacation destination, Shoulder Season is the sweet spot when their favorite restaurants and ice cream shops are open, but without the lines of tourists, and when their favorite beaches are not only beautiful, but also blissfully empty, too! For all intents and purposes of this article, Shoulder Season can generally be equated with Off Season.

Before getting too specific by place, here is a general month-by-month list of when is considered High, Shoulder, and Off Season:

As you can tell by the chart, it’s somehow pretty straightforward, and also a little wonky at the same time, depending on the month.

snowy park sign

Plus, when you start adding in the specifics of possible destinations, there’s even more variability. For example, early January in Puerto Rico would be considered High Season because of their traditional Three Kings Day Celebrations. In fact, many destinations in the Caribbean would be in High Season during the Winter months, since that’s when many people want to escape the cold, though families with children in school most often travel during school breaks, so crowds aren’t as super high as they usually are during Christmas and Winter Break weeks.

In addition, while August in Italy is still considered High Season, many Italians go on holiday during August, so depending on the region, many shops and businesses may be closed for their own vacation time. Of course, your favorite Love of the Magic Vacations Travel Advisor will be able to let you know exactly when the High, Shoulder and Off Season is of any destination you’re interested in!

Off Season Months in Specific Locations

Festival of arts

While the chart above gives you a general idea of when to travel if you want to capitalize on the benefits of Off Season Travel, there are some things that differ depending on specific locations. The following chart offers a glimpse into when some of the most popular travel destinations experience their Off Seasons.

Where to Go in the Off Season

Jamie at Festival of the Arts

When it comes to Off Season Travel, the truth is that you can pretty much travel to any destination during its Off Season, it all just depends on your priorities.

For instance, if Walt Disney World is your destination, the Off Season months of January or February might be the right choice if your priority is spending less time in lines, but those months may not work for you if your priority is experiencing the best water rides and spending time in the resort pools because Winter temperatures can dip even in Florida (but the Off Season month of September might cover all of those priorities, if you’re willing to take your kids out of school; again, it’s all down to your personal priorities).

Jamie with Stone Wall Sculpture

Likewise, if your priority for your dream European Vacation is to have the least crowds, the Winter months will be perfect for you. But if you hate bundling up, and traveling while wearing multiple layers annoys you, traveling during January and February may not be the right time for that epic European Adventure.

However, do be mindful of the seriously “off” Off Season locations, where many businesses and activities shut down for Winter. That’s not to say that you can’t go to a place like Alaska during the Winter months, but be ready for your vacation to be filled with snow-centered and off-the beaten-path activities, and also for many businesses and even the National Parks to be closed for at least portions of the Winter months.

Jamie in Ireland

Again, it all comes down to YOUR family’s preferences and priorities, but at least knowing what the Off Season can offer allows you to choose between better availability versus more temperate weather conditions, or traveling during school vacations, or whatever your specific considerations may be. It’s definitely better to know and make an informed decision, and your Love of the Magic Travel Agent will certainly be able to provide you with the Pros and Cons of visiting your chosen destination in the Off Season.

So, what exactly does traveling in the Off Season offer, and why should you try it? I’m so glad you asked!

Why Travel in the Off Season

Radiator Springs DCA

We’ve covered the When, we’ve covered the Where, and now for the Why.

Since we’re such fans of Off Season travel, last Winter, we highlighted Five Reasons to Travel During the Off Season, which you can find here . But for the TLDR version, here’s the shortlist:

1. The Off Season is Less Expensive

If sticking to a budget is your priority, Off Season travel might be the perfect way to visit all the places on your bucket list!

Mommy and Me Snow White

2. Off Season is Less Crowded

There’s definitely something to be said for snapping that perfect picture without a million people in the shot too, and for breezing through the lines of your favorite theme park rides. And if excess crowds can ruin an experience for you, Off Season travel is definitely something to consider.

3. Off Season Has More Availability

While there will always be aspects to any trip that need to be planned in advance, often your chances of scoring the tours you really want, or snagging tickets to a performance or sports event, are much greater when you’re traveling in the Off Season.

Country Cafe

4. Off Season Travel Offers More Authentic Experiences

To me, this is actually THE reason why I LOVE Off Season Travel. For as much as certain vacation destinations come to life during the height of their Peak Season, it’s often during their Off Season that those same places settle into the most authentic versions of themselves. Off Season travel gives you the opportunity to see a place at its most real, not dolled up for all the tourists, just its most authentic self, full of the locals who love it for exactly that.

5. Off Season Travel Has Positive Impacts on Both Local and Global Economies and Environments

Many people who live in Vacation destinations rely on tourists for their own livelihood and even survival, and the Off Season months can be extremely challenging financially. By traveling during the Off Season, you’re supporting local businesses when they need it most. Plus, traveling in the Off Season helps to spread out the impact of things like high volume traffic in National Parks, and pollution from exhaust, thereby bolstering vacation destinations both economically and environmentally, which is definitely something to feel good about.

Traveling at a time when you can save money, take advantage of smaller crowds, enjoy more availability and authentic experiences, and support the economy and environment at the same time actually seems like the best time to travel when you consider all that!

How to Do Italy in the Off Season, According to Travel Specialists

While Italy is never a bad idea per se, there are times when the the high-heeled boot kicks better than others. Those times lie in the off-season, when baking heat compounds not with throngs of crowds, and you, the tourist, find yourself with a touch more cool air to breathe. Between October and April and from thigh to toe to rock that the toe kicks (I am referring to Sicily ), the entire country comes alive in ways that most tourists will never get to experience if they stick to August.

"Could that really be true?" You ask. “It is true,” we at Traveler respond. It's easier to get reservations, for one thing, at storied establishments in Rome and elsewhere. The weather is milder, and not at cost of sunshine. Seasonal events you won't regret attending like Piedmont 's White Truffle Festival and the Feast of Sant Agata in Catania fall during this portion of the calendar. But don't let us alone convince you. Below, we've spoken to a handful of agents from our most trusted travel specialists about trips to Italy that they've planned in the off-season of which they are particularly proud.

Langhe, the Barolo red wine region of Piedmont, in autumn.

Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna

“One of the trips I recently put together that I am really proud of is to Lake Como , Piedmont, and Emilia-Romagna. This particular multi-generational family of 13 is from Texas, and they were really wanting to avoid the heat and the crowds as they have enough of that at home. They were really interested in Como and Passalacqua , the new-kid-on-the-block hotel that’s leaning into off-season travel itself by being open year round.

That’s why I planned it around Como, but I had them starting in Piedmont at the Casa di Langa for three days, about a two-and-a-half hour drive away, because it’s the kick-off of white truffle season. They’ll go to the truffle fair which is every weekend in Alba and eat at a mix of Michelin-starred restaurants and local trattorias. This region in general, you could compare it to Tuscany, if you’re a wine connoisseur this is where the Barolos and Barbarescos come from. But it’s much more concentrated than Tuscany , with hilltop villages and Alps in the background. It’s still very local. And then Lake Como is Lake Como. Weaving in Emilia-Romagna for tree days at Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni , a three-hour-drive south from Como, for the food element as well—it’s the food capital of Italy in my mind with prosciutto di parma and parmesan cheese and what we would call 'bolognese"'. You base yourself in Bologna, the city heart, and go into the countryside for the producers. There’s also Modena and Parma, two beautiful towns, Modena being the home of [Massimo Bottura’s] Osteria Francescana . Another benefit of traveling in the off-season is that you’re much more likely to be able to dine at a place like that. Getting a reservation doesn’t necessarily require waking up at 4 a.m. six months in advance, which I have done." — Caroline Quinn, Black Tomato

Catania in February, at the time of the Feast of Sant Agata.

Catania, Sicily

“How about the Feast of Sant Agata in Catania , where we sent clients in February this year? Sicily in February is heaven, the weather is gorgeous, and it’s warm enough to shrug off your winter woolies and eat outside. The fields are carpeted with wild flowers—the drive between Catania and Noto is spectacular—and it’s the time of year for the orange harvest which makes a wonderful contrast to the drab temperature and mood at home ( London , in my case). The Feast of Sant Agata attracts millions of pilgrims each year from around Sicily and is still very local and wild, with candlelit processions through the night, day time fireworks including from the roof of the Duomo and lots of celebrating. We are lucky enough to have friends who own a palazzo facing the Duomo where our clients could watch everything going on. During the day we drove them to Piazza Armerina to see the ‘bikini girls’ and at the Villa Romana which has the largest collection of Roman mosaics anywhere in the world. Normally packed with visitors, we had the entire villa to ourselves which was extraordinary.

Even Taormina , which has suffered from a deluge of visitors from what is known as the White Lotus effect (which I’m afraid I’m partly responsible for) was relatively empty. February is a brilliant month to visit Sicily especially if you’re curious about Ancient Rome, rather than baking alive in 100 degrees along with scores of other visitors you have the immense luxury of visiting temples, ruins, museums and mosaics alone.” — Emily Fitzroy , Bellini Travel

The Dolomites have quaint mountain villages and epic scenery best explored in cooler months

The Dolomites

“It’s a little bit of a local secret that fall proper is the best season in the Dolomites . Not only is there the changing of the seasons and the colors, but also a sensation of quiet that the locals find very welcome after what was likely a busy summer and early fall. They are keen to promote this time to visitors—over the years, I’ve been told by owners and general managers of hotels that this really is the best time to be here, you’re sharing the paths with fewer people and the air quality is amazing. I don’t know exactly why, there is a temperature change, but the quality of the views is so long and crisp and crystal with the contrast between the greens of the land with the blue skies. It’s a visual therapy. Plus, a lot of our travelers prefer the crispness for hiking over heat. It’s the right climate. At the same time, in the area where I run trips, we have 300 days of sunshine annually. Key towns to visit are Urtijëi and Castelrotto. The gateway city is Bolzano, a year-round residential city that’s worth spending time in. It’s the rendezvous point with a fantastic archeological museum and a university, so the vibe there is a mix of younger people and families.

I had an October trip that ended up being a private group of seven couples in their mid- to late-fifties. They were very happy to stay in Val Gardena. They requested that there be two different levels of hike each day—a rigorous group and a laidback group, the latter of which got to drop into little towns like Urtijëi to have a look around—Urtijëi is actually quite lively and has a great artistic tradition of woodwork. We would also mountain bike, which is popular here, and have wine tastings and private evenings at mountain huts that opened just for us. We brought in music from accordions in the evenings when everyone would gather together, and had opportunities for casual pizza nights and refined evenings at the hotel. I was able to join the group one evening, and it was really like a roving cocktail party with friends and friends of friends. Because it was quiet in the region, they felt like they had it to themselves and I was able to create private events even moreso. Everyone was able to have the experience that they wanted.” — Georgia Yuill , Butterfield & Robinson

Italy Florence Hotel Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, a 5,000-acre estate in the Val d'Orcia, sits near the town of Montalcino in Siena, Tuscany.

Siena, Tuscany

"South of Siena, Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is a 5,000-acre estate in the Val d’Orcia, near the town of Montalcino that I sent a family of five for a special Thanksgiving retreat this past November. I had personally visited Villa Ardore in Chianti in the fall on an industry trip organized by Bruno Lima of Destinare. We had a magical moonlit dinner with the villa owner, Christian Scali— with a private chef turning out wood fired pizzas in their outdoor oven. Over a glass of local wine, Christian was sharing stories of special time spent with his partner and their neighbors enjoying the off-season magic of the villa and this region during the holidays.

When clients came looking for a special holiday experience to share with their adult children, my mind was immediately transported back to Christian's stories. These clients weren't seeking a private villa or I would've happily sent them to Villa Ardore. Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco was the perfect answer with their luxurious but rustic chic accommodations, onsite winery, and cooking school.

After an overnight direct flight to Rome, we had a private driver pick them up at FCO and take them on the three-hour drive to the estate. Well rested and shaking off their jetlag, they enjoyed a cheese, wine, and vineyard tour that afternoon at the Castiglion del Bosco winery, the producer of Brunello di Montalcino. They finished off their night at Michelin-starred Ristorante Campo di Drago. The next day they were off truffle hunting, Brunello tasting, and enjoying a black truffle lunch. Then off to wander and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in the town of Montalcino and a night cap back at the property with a family chess game by the fire. The following day they took a cooking class, making fresh pasta by hand, and hiked the gorgeous property. The weather was crisp and sunny and our satisfied clients reported that the crowds were perfect—just enough for some lively energy without a single hint of chaos.” — Kim Hannum, Fora Travel

How the Pandemic Changed Travel’s Off-Season

Increased demand for beach and outdoor travel and more flexible work schedules have all but eliminated the shoulder and off-seasons in some popular destinations..

How the Pandemic Changed Travel’s Off-Season

Popular destinations like Aspen, Colorado, are no longer experiencing seasonal slowdowns.

Justin Todd used to be able to predict when business would be slower. Having been in the hospitality industry in Aspen, Colorado, for 15 years, he knew that the period between the snow going to slush and the wildflowers blooming would see a lull. From mid-April to early June, many Aspen properties, including Aspen Meadows Resort , where he is the general manager, would shut down—there wasn’t enough business to justify staying open. Companies often used that window to make repairs, deep clean, and complete projects. It was also a time for staff to decamp for their own vacations and locals to have their community all to themselves.

However, since the beginning of the pandemic, that period of rest has been disrupted.

“Things are definitely busier now,” said Todd of shoulder season, adding that his resort is staying open year-round—occupancy rates above 70 percent for what was previously the slow season made it an easy choice from a business perspective.

Aspen isn’t alone. Across the country, destinations have noticed a shift in traditional travel seasons. Many other places that have historically opted to close during the slower periods, like the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe , are now staying open all year because there’s so much more demand.

The factors impacting off-season travel

“The length of the off-season has shortened greatly,” said Linda Bendt, owner of Minnesota-based travel agency Pique . “In many places, the lines have blurred. Travelers are looking at destinations differently.”

Increasingly, interest in vacation spots has become divorced from weather forecasts. According to Wendy Burk, founder of La Jolla, California–based travel agency Cadence , “Availability and safety are the two biggest factors now.”

“There’s a scar tissue travelers have from this pandemic era, and it’s not likely to heal that quickly,” Burk said. “Windows of opportunity to travel can close as quickly as they open. When you have the chance to go, and the option is safe and available, you go.”

Jan Freitag, national director of hospitality analytics at the information and analytics company CoStar Group , credits work-from-anywhere policies for part of the shift. It’s allowing people to travel more frequently and for longer.

“It used to be that when you looked at the data, there was a distinct high-water mark in June and July—hotel occupancy nationally was over 70 percent and then would drop off at the end of summer,” Freitag said. “In 2021, those high numbers remained robust through October. And that was with less business travel—those numbers are probably just leisure travelers.”

How changes in travel behavior impact destinations

Nancy Lien, a public relations manager at Expedia Group (which encompasses more than 200 websites, largely travel fare aggregators and travel metasearch engines, such as Expedia.com , Vrbo , Hotels.com , Hotwire.com , Orbitz , Travelocity , Trivago , and CarRentals.com ), said that data her company has compiled is consistent with CoStar’s findings.

“Looking back at lodging data across Expedia and Hotels.com for September 2021, we can see travel demand remained strong, and so did lodging prices, which goes against the seasonal trends we used to see prior to the pandemic,” Lien said.

One example, she noted, was that lodging demand for destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean was up around 200 percent in September 2021 compared to September 2019. Lien added that the places seeing the most significant increase of shoulder season travelers are those with access to the outdoors, particularly national parks and beaches. “Top destinations are seeing a double-digit increase in hotel demand compared to prepandemic—spring shoulder season might be gone in some places,” Lien said.

According to Lien, hotels in places like O‘ahu, Maui, the Florida Keys, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and all major coastal destinations in Mexico experienced significant springtime demand compared with 2019, regardless of the time of year. Similarly, lodging near national parks—even during frigid winter months in parks such as Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone—is well above prepandemic levels.

The prolonged season can prove to be both a help and a hindrance to destinations. More travelers usually equate to more revenue. But in destinations like Park City, Utah, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the summer and winter seasons can be hectic, the shrinking off-season means the workers don’t get much of a break, which is particularly problematic with labor shortages . It also means locals have to contend with a nonstop barrage of tourists year-round.

The shoulder and off-seasons have also been a reliable time for travelers to score deals and visit a destination when few others are there. But the more travelers there are, the higher the demand—thus, hotels can often charge more (not to mention that inflation has also driven up travel prices ). The rental car market exemplifies the costly rates that can occur when shortages combine with high demand.

Where to find fewer off-season crowds

For those looking for shoulder and off-season trips and deals like those of old, timing and flexibility are key.

According to Expedia’s 2022 Travel Hacks report (released in November 2021 in collaboration with the Airline Reporting Corporation), January is the cheapest month to depart on domestic flights (yielding around 10 percent in savings) and August is the most affordable time to travel abroad (approximately 20 percent cheaper). So while you won’t be able to use those tips this year, note them for 2023 and beyond. Similarly, the lowest average daily rate for lodging tends to occur on Mondays, where travelers could save more than 15 percent versus staying on Friday, the most expensive day. For international trips, staying on a Tuesday rather than Thursday saves nearly 10 percent. In terms of where you go, Lien noted that destinations like Lake Powell (in Utah and Arizona), Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah, and Boulder, Colorado, are good, cheaper alternatives to national parks like Yosemite and Zion. Orange County and San Diego in California, Fort Lauderdale and Daytona Beach in Florida, and Costa Rica tend to be more affordable than Mexico and Caribbean beaches for those looking for a sand-and-sun vacation.

It’s impossible to completely predict how a travel season will turn out (just look at the flight chaos of this recent summer). But when theorizing whether the off-season will entirely be a thing of the past in the years to come, Freitag did note one wrinkle likely to nudge the calendar back to normalcy: the school year. “As more schools return to consistent in-classroom learning, more people will be connected to the high seasons again, driven by the school calendar,” Freitag said. “We’ll have to see how it plays out.”

The reopening of more countries like Japan might also reduce pressure on destinations. But travel agency founder Wendy Burk said her company believes the high demand is “a trend that will continue as the world opens up.”

  • Best US cities for off-season travel

T raveling can be expensive; off-season trips are a budget-friendly solution for those looking to save on their adventures. Off-season travel offers considerable savings on accommodations and attractions and provides unique — and often, less-crowded — experiences. To find the cheapest cities for off-season travel, MoneyGeek analyzed off-season airfare, hotel rates, and restaurant dining costs for the 50 largest U.S. cities and found that winter travelers can find great deals in Las Vegas or Oakland, while summer travelers might find Mesa, Arizona, to be a budget-friendly destination.

Key findings

  • A one-day, off-season vacation to the 50 largest U.S. cities costs $970, on average. During the summer, Mesa, Arizona, stands out as the most affordable place to travel overall, with costs amounting to just $528 — nearly half the national average.
  • Western cities have some of the best airfare deals during the off-season. In the summer, Mesa, Arizona, offers round-trip flights for $342. For winter travel, both Las Vegas, Nevada, and Oakland, California, have wallet-friendly, round-trip airfare prices at $540 and $552, respectively.
  • Texas and Oklahoma offer the most budget-friendly hotel options for vacationers in the off-season. In the winter months, Houston, Texas, averages hotel rates of $68 per night, while Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, isn’t far behind at $72. For fall travelers, San Antonio, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, have nightly rates averaging $85 and $88, respectively.
  • Columbus, Ohio, presents an affordable option for fall travelers. It holds the third spot for least expensive overall off-season travel costs and claims the No.5 lowest off-season airfare among major cities — all adding up to an estimated getaway cost of just $749.
  • Airports in major cities typically charge $780 for a round-trip ticket, but for those flying to Meadows Field in Bakersfield, California, the fare climbs to $1,149 — 50% more than the standard fare.

Cheapest cities for off-season travel

A typical one-day off-season getaway to any of the 50 largest U.S. cities costs $970, factoring in average round-trip airfare, hotel, and dining expenses.

For summer adventurers unfazed by high temperatures, Mesa, Arizona, is a wallet-friendly destination with total travel costs of just $528, 55% less than the national average. Round-trip flights to this destination average $342, while hotel stays cost an estimated $112 per night.

Winter travelers can enjoy significant savings in Las Vegas, Nevada, or Oakland, California, with both destinations costing under $770. Round-trip tickets average $540 and $552, respectively — the most affordable airfare among the cities included in our study. Hotel stays in both cities also average a reasonably priced $137 and $140 per night.

For those seeking a lower-cost fall destination, Columbus, Ohio, is worth considering. With an estimated total travel cost of $749, including $596 for a round-trip flight and $108 per night for hotel stays, Columbus ranks as the No.3 most budget-friendly major city for off-season travel costs and No.5 for off-season airfare.

Most affordable cities for off-season hotel stays

Off-season hotel stays in major cities usually cost an average of $130 per night. However, savvy travelers can save significantly by visiting Texas and Oklahoma in the fall or winter. In the colder months, Houston, Texas, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, offer hotel rates averaging $68 and $72 per night, respectively — that’s nearly 50% in savings compared to the national average for major cities. During the fall, San Antonio, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, provide nightly rates averaging around $85 and $88, respectively, which is still a significant discount of around 34%.

Most expensive cities for off-season travel

While off-season travel is more affordable in many places, it can still be expensive in certain cities. For example, Bakersfield, California, is the most expensive city for off-season winter getaways, with an average total travel cost of $1,342. Round-trip airfare there is the highest among all major cities at $1,150, nearly 50% more than the major city average of $780. While Bakersfield consistently has the priciest airfare year-round, opting for winter travel can provide a discount of roughly 10%, translating to a savings of about $268 on round-trip flights.

Detroit in the winter and Boston in the fall also rank among the top five most expensive cities for off-season travel, with hotel rates sitting at $334 and $258 per night during these seasons, respectively — significantly more than the average rate of $130 per night seen across all cities studied.

Methodology

To identify the most affordable off-season U.S. travel destinations, MoneyGeek analyzed off-season airfare, hotel, and food cost data for the 50 largest cities in the country.

We used travel planning resources to identify off-season months for each city. These include whereandwhen.net , travellersworldwide.com , and travellemming.com .

MoneyGeek analyzed airfare data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics , focusing on the quarter with the highest number of off-season months. For cities lacking airports, we utilized data from the nearest major airport. Our airfare data, inflation-adjusted to Q1-2023, was collected for Q1-2023, Q4-2022, Q3-2022, and Q2-2022.

Additionally, we analyzed the top 25 lowest nightly hotel rates per city during each city’s off-season months on Booking.com , averaging the results. Our search filters included a Saturday night stay during off-season months, a minimum three-star hotel rating, and the exclusion of aparthotels, a type of accommodation that blends the features of a hotel with the features of an apartment.

Using food cost data from numbeo.com , we analyzed the cost of an affordable restaurant meal in different major cities. It’s important to note that this data isn’t specifically focused on off-season months — like hotel and airfare prices — and only refers to the most recent available updated data.

To determine the total off-season travel cost per city, we added the expenses of round-trip airfare, one night’s hotel accommodation, and the cost of three daily meals from inexpensive restaurants. We ranked cities in order of least expensive total travel costs to most expensive total travel costs.

Northern Italy

Northern Italy is a popular destination year-round, but winter into spring is far more manageable for visitors. Florence’s usually packed Uffizi - if booked a few days in advance - has some breathing room, as do the narrow streets of Venice. Room rates are typically reduced, and it’s much easier to get a table at restaurants on the spur of the moment. Temperatures hover in the 30s and 40s, but Italian fashion and frequent bistro stops will keep you warm. In the South Tyrol region along the Austrian, German and Swiss borders, as the ski season ends, Italians take a break before preparing for the summer season. Rent a bike and ride downhill on the Val Pusteria path from San Candido to Lientz, Austria, and then take the train back. Though some shops and restaurants may close for vacations, April and May are perfect months to rent a car and explore the alpine towns of Auronzo di Cadore , Cortina d’Ampezzo and Sexten. In Sexten, pamper yourself like a local at the Mountain Resort Patzenfeld’s spa, and take advantage of the thin off-season crowds at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology where you can view Otzi the Iceman and learn about the Bronze-Age history of the region.

Has the Pandemic Undermined Off-Season Deals?

In many places, high-occupancy rates are inflating prices for budget-minded travelers who count on off-peak periods to find the best bargains. Here’s what to do and where to look.

travel off season

By Elaine Glusac

Last February, I searched for a vacation rental in Door County , the wayward spear of Wisconsin that juts into Lake Michigan, for an early May getaway, confident I had beaten the summer rush to the popular vacation spot. But Airbnb occupancy calendars for lovely converted farmhouses and log cabins were already full and when I called a local vacation home rental agency, the agent said they were almost completely booked through the summer. That’s how I ended up in a one-bedroom shack last spring with a wobbly card table in an ant-infested kitchen and a new awareness of the shrinking off-season.

From Miami to communities around national parks like Zion in Utah and Joshua Tree in California, high-occupancy rates during traditionally off-season times of the year are muddling what was normally a reliable way to save money — traveling when few others are.

Continued work-from-anywhere policies have freed travelers from their homes, and as they have flocked to places like Jackson Hole, Wyo., and the Florida Keys, lodging rates have soared.

In 2020, a survey from Booking.com found that 58 percent of American travelers were more likely to travel during off-peak seasons — to avoid crowds and the risk of contracting or spreading Covid-19 — than they were before the pandemic. In 2021, it found the sentiment grew: nearly seven in 10 travelers said they would choose an alternative destination in order to avoid peak season.

“Most of the demand in 2021 was leisure-driven,” said Ali Hoyt, the senior director of consulting at STR, which tracks the hospitality industry, noting that stimulus money helped satisfy pent-up demand for vacations and social gatherings in resort destinations. “People showed that once they were vaccinated, they were ready to travel.”

Seasonality isn’t the only factor affecting rates, of course. The hiring shortage has made finding hotel employees harder, which might mean limiting the number of rooms available or paying new staffers more, thus increasing costs that may be passed on to travelers. Occupancy caps also curtail availability, and inflation and delivery issues have driven up prices for supplies that hotels use, from food to cleaning products.

But even with those caveats, in many popular resort areas, more travelers means higher rates.

The endangered shoulder season

During the pandemic, American leisure travelers favored outdoor destinations in coastal regions and mountain towns.

Aspen, Colo., smashed records for summer high-season occupancy in July at nearly 88 percent, and for the off-season month of September, occupancy was at 69 percent, 20 percent over 2019.

Jackson Hole has also been busy throughout the pandemic, helped by the migration of urbanites to rural areas, according to local reports .

“Covid accelerated things for Jackson,” said Sadek Darwiche, the co-owner and general manager of Hotel Jackson downtown. The formerly slow months — October, November, April and May — saw a spike in visitation, nearly doubling prepandemic norms last October.

“Shoulder season, in 2022, might be gone in Florida, Hawaii and at the big national parks with many top destinations seeing double-digit hotel demand increases in January and February,” wrote Christie Hudson, a spokeswoman for Expedia Group, in an email, noting that many of these areas exceeded 2019 lodging figures.

Most hotels charge more when demand allows. For The Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village in Cape Coral, Fla., more visitors in the normally slow summer and mostly steady traffic otherwise pushed rates on average 10 percent above 2019 levels.

At Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa in the Hamptons, the surge was more dramatic as urban exiles drove the off-season nearly to extinction, according to George Filopoulos, the owner of the resort. There, average nightly rates in the normally quiet month of December climbed from $368 in 2019 to $486 in 2020 and $524 this year.

One of the busiest hotel markets, according to STR, was the Florida Keys , where average daily rates grew from about $272 in 2019 to $380 in 2021 as of November, or nearly 40 percent.

“Mid-February last year, we saw a spike in demand and it has not stopped,” said Stacey Mitchell, the tourism council director for the Florida Keys.

Of course, many destinations have been working hard to shrink the off-season. Door County, for example, has a popular half-marathon in early May, and in 2021, it added a Christmas market in late November and early December to attract visitors at traditionally slower times.

Weekdays are the new off-season

In many places, the new bargain “season” is the weekday.

“As a result of the pandemic, we have seen a new ‘shoulder season’ emerge that isn’t geography specific, but rather weekday specific,” wrote Kathleen Reidenbach, the chief commercial officer for Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants in an email, noting that weekends continue to be busy.

In the United States, according to Expedia, the lowest average daily rate tends to occur on a Monday, which is priced about 15 percent less than Friday, the most expensive day.

Monday deals aren’t hard to find. In California’s Santa Ynez Valley on the central coast, about a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, the tourism bureau is offering a Midweek Membership Club promotion, through which visitors who book a two-night midweek stay, Sunday through Thursday, gain access to discounts and vouchers for restaurants, wine tastings and more, through March 31.

At the Sanderling Resort on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, to get the lowest $187 nightly rate, versus $569 in the summer high season, you’ll have to visit midweek, January through April. Weekend rates during that period start at $237.

According to the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, visitor numbers were up nearly 174 percent in January 2021 compared to January 2020. “Most coastal destinations are doing very well right now, and will continue to do so until the world opens back up for business,” said Jake Hatch, the director of sales and marketing at the Sanderling. “Off-peak seasons are growing rapidly and peak seasons are booking up faster than ever, driving rates across the board.”

Where the buys are

High-season creep, of course, varies from place to place. Lodgings in some destinations are still dangling attractive rates to lure travelers when things are quiet, particularly in big cities, which continue to suffer from a lack of business and group travel.

In Chicago, comparing year-to-date figures for November, rooms were down $26 from 2019, averaging $121 in 2021, according to STR.

For travel in January and February, Expedia recommends cities like Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Denver for sub-2019 rates. Its affiliate vacation home rental platform Vrbo reports at least 70 percent availability on rentals in Asheville, N.C.; Tillamook, Ore.; and the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania in February and March.

Among beach destinations, seasonality hasn’t changed much in Myrtle Beach, S.C., according to EOS Hospitality , which manages nine resorts there. For best buys, Gaurav Sharma, the executive vice president of revenue and distribution for the company, recommends the first and last quarter of the year when occupancy typically runs about 50 percent and rates start at $99.

Off the coast of Southern California, Catalina Island hotels are bundling rooms with passage on the Catalina Express ferry plus other perks through March 25. The Bellanca Hotel throws in taxi transfers and a bottle of wine from $299 a night, and the Hotel Catalina includes morning coffee and dining discounts from $83.50 a person.

Bermuda, where summer is high season, is holding a sale through Feb. 6 at up to 50 percent off 12 resorts. Some of the deals exclude summer travel, but others extend to year end.

Though the off-season is shrinking, it hasn’t entirely vanished. Even destinations with few rate dips say the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a good time to look for value.

The new normal, for now

Though the Omicron variant has clouded predictions about where and how much people will travel, off-season travel appears to be here to stay, at least domestically.

AirDNA , a consultancy that analyzes the short-term rental market, said U.S. vacation rentals exceeded 2019 results by more than 2 percent in 2021. The firm projected they will grow another 14 percent in 2022.

Recreational vehicle rentals are up at normally down times, too.

“We expect increased demand for shoulder season bookings to become a new normal as more companies and individuals embrace geographic flexibility in their work,” said Jon Gray, the chief executive of RVShare , a platform for renting R.V.s from their owners.

Eventually, when business and group travel pick up, the off-season may spring back.

“The boom in leisure travel will be hard to maintain,” said Ms. Hoyt of STR, noting that the stimulus-funded spree may give way to the usual highs and lows of seasonal travel.

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

travel off season

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

  • ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

The upcoming summer travel season will be extraordinarily busy and exceed pre-pandemic levels, though it will look a bit different than the past two summers when Americans caught the travel bug after years of COVID-19 restrictions. On the wane is so-called revenge travel, a post-pandemic phenomenon in which Americans who were desperate to make up for lost time booked exotic, and often expensive, “ bucket list ” adventures.

This year, the trend has shifted back to more traditional vacation destinations and cost-conscious practices. But overall travel volume will hit historic highs this summer. Online travel agency Expedia says flight searches are up 25%, overall for June through August, compared with the same time last year. And interest in international destinations across Europe and Asia is up by triple digits. The number of Americans who eventually book a trip this summer will be on par with last summer. But globally, 4.7 billion people are expected to travel in 2024, compared with 4.5 billion in 2019, with much of that travel occurring this summer. That means that flights, hotels and attractions in the United States and abroad will be crowded to levels unseen in years.

Domestic airfares will remain in line with or just slightly higher than last summer. Fares will begin to rise in May, reaching a peak at the end of May and early June.

To save money, avoid holiday weekends and travel during late August, if possible, when airfares will drop more than $100.

International airfare will be a mixed bag. Overall, prices will drop for most regions of the world, compared with last year, though they will still be higher than pre-pandemic levels. But airfares will fluctuate significantly depending on the destination, so bargain airfares won’t be found everywhere.

Avoid holiday weekends and travel during late August, when airfares will drop more than $100.

Flight disruptions are a definite possibility this summer as airlines struggle to put enough planes in the air to meet demand. Some carriers will be forced to trim their schedules to cope with a lack of available planes due to production problems at aircraft makers Boeing and Airbus.

When planning a trip, be wary of major events taking place locally that boost prices and shrink availability for hotels, restaurants and car rentals.

  • For Europe, avoid Paris during the Olympics in July and August.
  • The same goes for Germany from mid-June to mid-July, when it hosts the quadrennial European Football [soccer] Championship.
  • And singer Taylor Swift’s European tour this summer will cause price and availability issues in every city where she performs.
  • Domestically, political party conventions in Milwaukee (July) and Chicago (August) mean accommodations will be at a premium during those events, if they’re available at all.

If you’re hitting the road this summer, gas prices in the U.S. should be similar to or slightly higher than last year, ranging from about $3.50 to $4 a gallon, although some states will be much more expensive. Still, unforeseen international issues, like a worsening situation in the Middle East, could suddenly boost the national average well above $4.

Car rental prices will be slightly above last summer’s, with fleet availability improved over last year.

Domestic hotel prices and availability will be in line with last year. But also consider short-term housing rental agencies like Airbnb , as this option may be more affordable and convenient, particularly for families and groups.

As for where Americans are headed, interest in off-the-beaten-path locales that became popular immediately after the pandemic hasn’t evaporated. One booming trend is “destination dupes” — affordable alternatives to popular tourist spots. Think Liverpool for London, or Québec City for Geneva.

Another trend is “set-jetting” — traveling to destinations that are filming locations of TV shows and movies. While the concept isn’t new, the trend got a massive boost during the pandemic era, when TV watching dramatically increased during lockdowns.

Other summer travel trends are “cool-cations” (summer vacations to destinations with mild climates to avoid potentially record-breaking heat) and “tour travel” (traveling for a concert).

The strength of the U.S. dollar and relatively low inflation are driving more Americans to travel to places where the dollar will go the furthest , like Southeast Asia. And there is a growing interest in Japan, which lifted its pandemic travel restrictions only last year.

New York City and Los Angeles will top the list of the most popular domestic travel destinations this summer, according to Expedia, followed by Seattle, Orlando and Las Vegas.

Internationally, Cancun, Mexico and London top the list. Next up: Rome; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; and Paris. Other destinations that are trending: Auckland, New Zealand; Hong Kong; Osaka, Japan; and Da Nang and Hanoi, Vietnam.

What to expect when visiting Disneyland in May

Ways to save money at disneyland, beware of crowds.

For a brief period this month, the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, is bringing together a trifecta of entertainment across both of its theme parks.

Disneyland regularly hosts special festivals at the park for Halloween and other holidays, but this is one of the rare times of the year when visitors can experience two festivals at once.

This year’s Pixar Fest and Seasons of the Force feature two beloved franchises — Pixar and Star Wars — through over-the-top food and meet-and-greets with characters never seen before in the parks. Unique entertainment options include a fireworks show that depending on where you view it is either Pixar- or Star Wars-themed with two separate soundtracks.

And that’s not all. One of Disney’s most iconic nighttime shows, “Fantasmic!,” returns in May.

Plus, there’s a ticket offer for Southern California residents that could make experiencing this somewhat affordable — at least by Disney standards.

Pixar Fest kicks off

From now through Aug. 4, Disneyland Resort is sporting a new makeover for Pixar Fest, a festival devoted to films made by the company’s computer-animation subsidiary, Pixar Animation Studios. NerdWallet got an inside look during a press event for the festival's kickoff.

As part of Pixar Fest, there’s an abundance of Pixar-themed entertainment, including a dance party and a new daytime parade. Character meet-and-greets will include Pixar characters such as Wade and Ember from “Elemental" for the first time at the Disneyland Resort.

You’ll also see decorations throughout both theme parks, including a 25-foot tall sculpture of the iconic Pixar Ball outside Disneyland’s main gate.

One of the big draws of Disney festivals is the food. For example, you might see Mr. Potato Head-inspired churros, which top the iconic snack with, yes, potato chips.

On May 10, a series of marketplace stands will open at Disney California Adventure Park with even more limited-time food offerings based on some of Pixar’s newer films, including Hanger Management inspired by “Inside Out.”

Then, there are the fireworks. Tinker Bell is the usual star of Disney fireworks shows, but during Pixar Fest, Buzz takes the torch and flies across the sky between Matterhorn Bobsleds and Sleeping Beauty Castle. Later, Carl and Ellie’s house featured in “Up” floats above the castle.

Season of the Force continues

For fans who prefer Chewbacca over Sulley as their hairy creature of choice, May also features a Star Wars-themed festival called Season of the Force. Season of the Force runs through June 2, providing about a month where both festivals overlap.

“The two festivals aren’t actually intended to interact with each other,” says Tracy Halas, creative director at Disney Live Entertainment. “It’s really just an opportunity to share everything and have something for everybody at the parks.”

And there are plenty of Star Wars fans, indeed. After all, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still holds the title of highest-grossing film of all time in the domestic market, according to Box Office Mojo.

Among the festival's star attractions is a temporary retheming of the Space Mountain ride to Hyperspace Mountain, where the soundtrack now includes the films’ iconic theme song. There’s also Star Wars-themed food, including a bantha burger based on the furry, horned mammals that roam the fictional planet of Tatooine.

While those Disneyland special events spotlight two of Disney’s biggest franchises, that’s still not the only reason why May could be the best month for Disneyland fans.

Fantasmic! returns

“Fantasmic!”, a nighttime show at Disneyland involving costumed characters, stunts and pyrotechnics, went dark after a massive, fire-breathing dragon prop fell victim to its own flames during a live performance in April 2023. That performance was cut short, marking the last show for more than a year. That changes on May 24, when the show returns.

Southern California resident tickets

Disney uses variable pricing on its theme park tickets , where higher-demand days command higher prices. Disneyland prices its one-day admission tickets across seven tiers, ranging from Tier 0 (least expensive) to Tier 6 (most expensive).

The average single-day ticket price in May is $162, about 7.4% cheaper than July’s average of $175, according to a NerdWallet analysis of Disney ticket prices.

For locals, a limited-time ticket option offers even lower prices. Southern California residents can purchase a three-day ticket package that costs $225 for weekday tickets ($75 per day) or $275 ($92 per day) for the version that offers weekend access, too.

The last day to use tickets sold through that promotion is June 2.

Hotel discounts

Then, there's another offer available to anyone — not just local residents — that could make trips more affordable. Hotel stays on Sunday through Thursday nights are as much as 15% off for trips booked via Disney's website through June 3 and completed by June 7.

Hotel prices can be the biggest cost in a Disneyland trip — more so than other expenses like food and theme park tickets. The weeknight hotel deal could make them more affordable. Plus, weekday theme park tickets tend to be cheaper than weekends, adding to the savings.

But for all the goodness set for May, you might have to contend with crowds. The ticket prices of Fantasmic!'s reopening weekend falls into the highest pricing tier, suggesting Disney is bracing for big crowds on that weekend.

High school students also descend upon Disney California Adventure on certain nights in May and June for Grad Nite. There may be bigger daytime crowds if students arrive early, and the park will close earlier than usual. This year’s Grad Nites are set for May 10, 14, 15, 17, 19, 22, 23, 28 and 31, as well as June 2, 5, 7, 9, 12 and 14.

Plus, with Southern California resident tickets expiring on June 2 and the summer blackout dates starting May 31 for certain annual pass holders, many people might squeeze in a visit in May.
