Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, and Iron Maiden Announce Mega-Concert Called Power Trip
By Evan Minsker
Metallica , AC/DC , Guns N’ Roses , Tool , Iron Maiden , and Ozzy Osbourne have announced a three-day mega-concert at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California, from October 6-8. The event is called Power Trip , which is ostensibly a reference to the 2016 mega-concert Desert Trip and not an homage to the late Riley Gale’s beloved Texas thrash metal band . Find the Power Trip poster below.
When reached by Pitchfork, representatives for the band Power Trip offered no comment on the California event. Late Thursday night, the band quote-tweeted the poster with one word in response: “pathetic.” The tweet has since been deleted.
The Power Trip artists all teased the festival’s announcement on social media earlier in the week. Desert Trip in 2016 featured Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Roger Waters, and the Who. Like Desert Trip, Power Trip is being put on by Goldenvoice.
Power Trip will take place at the same location as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival . Coachella 2023 is taking place from April 14-16 and April 21-23 with headliners Frank Ocean, Bad Bunny, and Blackpink.
Earlier this year, Ozzy Osbourne canceled some European tour dates and suggested that he was done touring for good due to a spine injury. He left the door open, however, for events like Power Trip that do not require extensive travel. “My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country,” he explained.

Judge fines Trump $9K for violating gag order as testimony continues in N.Y. hush money trial
Power trip: guns n' roses, ac/dc, metallica to headline october festival. what you need to know.
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Get ready to bang your heads. The metal festival Power Trip is officially a go, with a lineup that includes hardrock legends Guns N' Roses, AC/DC and Metallica. The festival will be held Oct. 6-8 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, home of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The official announcement of the festival, which was made on Twitter Thursday morning, came after a teaser video popped up on social media Tuesday hinting at a metal music event in the desert (complete with rocker cacti). The video sent viewers to a website that invited them to sign up for updates from Goldenvoice.
What artists have been announced?
Friday, Oct. 6
Guns N' Roses
Iron Maiden
Saturday, Oct. 7
Ozzy Osbourne
Sunday, Oct. 8
It was not immediately clear if the announced bands constitute the entire lineup or if other additions were still to be announced. However, a lineup consisting of two bands each night would mirror that of Desert Trip, the 2016 classic rock festival held at Empire Polo Club in 2016 that Power Trip's name seems to be a clear nod to.
When and where can I buy tickets?
Tickets for the festival go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 6 at powertrip.live . But hotel and VIP packages will be available starting at 10 a.m. April 4. Fans can register now at that website to "access tickets" then. The website says tickets will initially be available only to those who register.
Register now at https://t.co/eoqxriOQCn for first access to tickets starting Thursday, April 6 at 10am PT. Hotel and VIP Packages available starting Tuesday, April 4 at 10am PT. pic.twitter.com/4RPNUDkuCX — Power Trip (@Powertriplive) March 30, 2023
Is this going to break the bank?
As anyone who has been to Coachella or Stagecoach surely expected, attending the festival won't come cheap and will require buying a wristband covering all three days. In fact, getting into the event will cost more than going to Coachella, according to ticket prices posted online.
The cheapest general admission wristbands, which include access to the festival and parking lot, are $649. For comparison, that's $21 more than the similar general admission wristband for Weekend 2 of Coachella currently being sold on that festival's website.
Unlike the annual Empire Polo Club festivals, Power Trip will have specific floor, grandstand and pit areas. A wristband with reserved floor seating starts at about $875 while those for the pit begin at $1750. Those passes also offer access to two "lounge areas" of the festival, although the website explains the lounge won't have a view of the stage.
The festival is also selling several VIP packages that include access to the lounge areas, as well as VIP merchandise. The starting price for those packages is $1,749 to $2,999. VIP packages for Coachella currently start at $1,199.
As with the other festivals, camping will be available on site. A car camping spot starts at $234.87 for the weekend, while the cheapest RV spot goes for $1,404.87.

Has this ever been done before?
Although the polo fields are best known for the hordes of flower crown-wearing 20-somethings who descend in force in April and the country-loving cowboys who follow them, the venue has hosted a big-time metal event featuring Metallica before. In 2011, the band headlined a stop on the intercontinental "Big 4" tour held at the polo grounds, which also featured Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. That event was held between the Coachella and Stagecoach festivals.
However, Power Trip's structure and strategy is more remniscent of potentially the most iconic music event in Coachella Valley history: Desert Trip.
For two October 2016 weekends at the Empire Polo Club, Desert Trip festival featured a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, The Who and Roger Waters — literal legends responsible for the songs that have made up the soundtracks of so many lives.

Have any of the Power Trip artists played Coachella?
Even though the lineup features metal, most of the bands have performed at Coachella in previous years.
Tool performed at the first Coachella in 1999 and again as headliners in 2006. Frontman Maynard James Keenan has also performed at the festival with his side projects Puscifer in 2013 and A Perfect Circle in 2018.
AC/DC’s 2015 headlining performances came with some baggage. Co-founder and guitarist Malcolm Young officially left the band due to receive treatment for dementia, which was the cause of his death two years later. Drummer Phil Rudd was charged with possession of methamphetamine and cannabis a few months earlier and was replaced by Chris Slade.
Still, the Australian rock band won the crowd over. Horned-hands were thrown in the air, heads were banged, and the crowd shouted at all the right times.
When Guns N’ Roses headlined in 2016, it was the first time the reunited lineup featuring frontman Axl Rose with guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan performed at an outdoor festival together in 23 years.
The band played an epic two-and-a-half hour set both weekends with Rose forced by a broken foot to do it entirely while sitting in a throne loaned to him by Dave Grohl.
Axl Rose also came out as a special guest during Carrie Underwood's 2022 Stagecoach headlining set.

Power Trip shows potential for annual international metal festival in October
It’s hard to say whether the all-metal festival Power Trip was a success or a failure.
All six bands put on extraordinary shows over the weekend at the Empire Polo Club and made Power Trip the experience of a lifetime, but it wasn’t anywhere near the triumph that was Desert Trip, and the crowd was smaller in comparison.
It was a victory, in a sense, for bringing metal to the Coachella Valley, a genre of music with a local following that is disregarded and without many opportunities or live offerings for heavy metal — with the exception of a Metallica or Iron Maiden cover band playing in the Rock Yard at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
Locals have said there’s "a need" for an event like Power Trip in the Coachella Valley
That said, here's a suggestion to Los Angeles promoter Goldenvoice, the producer of Power Trip, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach country music festival: Ditch the “Trip” concept and put on an annual international metal festival in October.
How many “once-in-a-lifetime” experiences are left after offering the lineup of Desert Trip? Led Zeppelin, the desired act for a future Desert Trip, refuses to reunite , and putting on the same six acts of the 2016 festival seems like an unnecessary repeat.
Just as Goldenvoice brought a European-style music festival to the desert in 1999 with Coachella featuring a mix of independent and prominent artists and bands, the same could be done for a world-class metal festival that would receive the same amount of international prominence.
'Wacken meets Coachella'
Metal is a popular genre of music around the globe. According to the metal news site BraveWorlds, Iron Maiden has over 6 million streams per month on Spotify . In 2019, TuneCore reported metal was the fastest-growing music genre based on streaming numbers provided by Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and more. Lineups of prominent and emerging international bands draw thousands to large European festivals such as Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany; the Graspop Metal Meeting in Dessel, Belgium; and the Download Festival held at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England to name a few.
Even though there are U.S. metal festivals such as the Welcome to Rockville at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach and the Aftershock Festival at Discovery Park in Sacramento, there's an opening to feature more emerging and independent bands from around the globe such as Burner , Slaughter To Prevail , Voice of Baceprot and more — who aren't often invited to those festivals — to share stages with bands such as Avenged Sevenfold, Korn and Slipknot.
If another metal festival returns to the Empire Polo Club, changing the name would be a prudent decision. Power Trip is also a notable metal band that emerged out of the Dallas music scene during the 2010s. Its 2017 album, "Nightmare Logic," reached No. 22 on Billboard's Top Hard Rock Albums. Frontman Riley Gale died in 2020 and Power Trip's surviving members told The Los Angeles Times in 2021 the band's future is unknown .
Local metal fan Xan Abyss, who did not attend Power Trip, said “I absolutely think (an international metal festival) is needed in the U.S.” and has imagined the idea of Goldenvoice doing “Wacken meets Coachella” at the Empire Polo Club.
“I think Goldenvoice could get away with booking metal and some other stuff, like goth bands and certain rap groups that appeal to metalheads and metal hipsters. Run the Jewels, Death Grips, Wu-Tang Clan and punk bands. Those festivals in Europe tend to have a few outliers, Hellfest in France is pretty good about that,” Xan Abyss said.
Power Trip attracted an international audience
Indio resident Leonard Ortiz has proof of how far some traveled to the Empire Polo Club to see Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Tool and Metallica. On Sunday, his flag had signatures from festivalgoers that traveled from Austria, Nepal, Lebanon, Australia and more.
"I think a (European-style metal festival) would work," Ortiz said. "There's a variety of people coming here from October to April and people from all over the world. I think a festival every October other than every seven years, they'll definitely come. I was wishing for something like (Power Trip)."
Brian Parnell, guitarist of the Idyllwild metal band Throw the Goat, also didn’t attend Power Trip, and isn't so certain the European festival model would work in America based on his experiences of working at festivals in the U.S. and Europe.
He said Americans' preferences for luxury camping accommodations and VIP experiences that cost thousands of dollars like Coachella couldn't be farther from what Europeans seek from a festival experience.
“The main difference between U.S. festivals and those in Europe is the crowd itself,” Parnell said. “In Europe, the audience is so pumped up they sing along at full volume to the music they play in between bands. Despite the weather and horrible conditions, they’re happy to be there. At American festivals, people look absolutely overjoyed in social media posts, but I can say from observational experience they’re miserable for 99% of their festival experience.”
Robert Wood, frontman of the local metal band In the Name of the Dead, said "it would become a huge deal if done the right way.""A European-style metal festival like Wacken would be awesome in the U.S. and especially at the Empire Polo Club. That is more or less what Coachella and Stagecoach already are, but not for metal/hardcore," Wood said.
Even though Power Trip didn't sell out and wasn't on the same scale as Desert Trip and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the potential of attracting an international metal audience to the Empire Polo Club was obvious throughout the weekend.

UPDATE: All of the information below was confirmed Thursday morning in the Power Trip festival’s official announcement .
While an official announcement is not expected until later in the week, multiple sources tell Variety that Metallica , Guns N’ Roses, Ozzy Osbourne , AC/DC, Tool and Iron Maiden will headline a new festival called Power Trip from Coachella founders Goldenvoice.
Popular on Variety
The “teaser” campaign — if it even can be called that — began earlier this week with a video posted on a new website and Instagram account called Power Trip that features iconic metal images including a Gibson SG guitar, a stack of amplifiers and cactuses creating the “devil horns”; the video was shared on the accounts of several of the above artists.
The teasers suggest an announcement is coming on Thursday (March 30). Scenestar says the festival will take place the weekend of Oct 6-8; according to Hits, Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden will perform on Friday, AC/DC and Osbourne on Saturday and Metallica and Tool on Sunday.

The acts are all multi-decade veterans and most have been actively touring in recent years. The 74-year-old Osbourne’s health has been an ongoing concern and he even announced his retirement from touring earlier this year, but he usually finds the stamina to deliver when the moment calls for it, and a one-off concert may be less of a challenge than a full tour (he also made his first “retirement tour” in 1992). The other acts either hit the road recently or have tours already lined up for 2023.
Variety will have more on this news as it develops.

Power Trip Festival: Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses to Shake Coachella Grounds
By Kory Grow
Some of metal and hard rock’s most celebrated artists will decimate the Coachella grounds this fall for the inaugural Power Trip festival. Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden , AC/DC , Ozzy Osbourne , Metallica , and Tool are all set to play Indio, California’s Empire Polo Club on October 6, 7, and 8. Ticketing begins on April 6 at 10 a.m. PT; full info is on the fest’s website .
The gig marks AC/DC’s first concert since December 2016, which featured Axl Rose as their singer while frontman Brian Johnson recovered from hearing loss. It is unclear who, other than guitarist Angus Young, will be in the band’s lineup for the gig, though Johnson sang on their 2020 album, Power Up .
The Power Trip concerts will also mark Osbourne’s first full gig since New Year’s Eve 2018. Shortly after that gig, he slipped and fell in the middle of the night aggravating an old injury. He has been training to get back into performance shape ever since and has been performing one-offs here in there in recent years. Last year, he made a surprise appearance at England’s Commonwealth Games for a performance with his Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi, and also played the halftime of a Rams-Bills game . In February, Osbourne announced he was retiring from touring .

Metallica, who are putting out their newest album, 72 Seasons , next month (and released the album’s title track today), already had a number of gigs planned this year, as do Guns N’ Roses, who have a world tour. Iron Maiden’s only dates this year are in Europe for their Future Past tour, and Tool had just four other festival dates on the books.
In 2011, Goldenvoice, which produces Coachella, put together The Big Four festival on the grounds, which featured Metallica alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. The company also previously put together the Desert Trip festival , which also featured legacy acts like the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Paul McCartney, in 2016. Its annual country festival, Stagecoach, also takes place on the same grounds.

Ozzy, AC/DC, Metallica and More to Storm Power Trip Festival
Ozzy Osbourne , AC/DC , Metallica , Iron Maiden , Guns N' Roses and Tool will storm the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif., this fall for the inaugural Power Trip festival.
The Goldenvoice-produced extravaganza will take place from Oct. 6-8. Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden will play on Friday, AC/DC and Osbourne on Saturday and Metallica and Tool on Sunday. Those who register on the Power Trip website will get the first access to tickets on April 6.
All six rock and metal heavyweights teased the festival on social media this week with a series of posts tagging the Power Trip account or linking to the festival website. Each post included a teaser video that showed the words "power" and "trip" being cut out of a magazine along with images of musical equipment and cacti. The images comprised a collage-like flyer that got printed at the end of the video.
Power Trip is the evolution of 2016's Desert Trip, which featured the Rolling Stones , Bob Dylan , Paul McCartney , Neil Young , Roger Waters and the Who . That star-studded affair also took place at the Empire Polo Club, which is best known as the home of Coachella.
Osbourne's participation in the festival is especially noteworthy, as the metal legend announced his retirement from touring earlier this year following a series of health setbacks. "I have now come to the realization that I'm not physically capable of doing my upcoming European [and] U.K. tour dates, as I know I couldn't deal with the travel required," he said in a lengthy statement.
The Prince of Darkness did, however, leave the door open for special events that didn't require such strenuous travel: "My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country."
AC/DC's involvement will mark the band's first shows since 2016 when Axl Rose filled in for Brian Johnson at the end of the Rock or Bust World Tour as the latter was ordered to stop touring due to hearing issues. Johnson returned to AC/DC in 2020 and they released Power Up the same year. Power Trip will also mark the band's first show since the death of Malcolm Young in 2017.
The Empire Polo Club is also hallowed ground for Guns N' Roses, who headlined Coachella in 2016 at the beginning of their Not in This Lifetime ... Tour .

Power Trip: Special guests, songs and more we're hoping to experience at the festival
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Even though its announcement got mixed reception locally, the upcoming Power Trip music festival at the Empire Polo Club is groundbreaking for the Coachella Valley, which has hosted very few heavy metal concerts.
Similar to the 2016 one-off festival Desert Trip featuring classic rock legends Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones , Neil Young , Paul McCartney , The Who and Roger Waters , Los Angeles promoter Goldenvoice is going back to the same two-bands-per-night format for Power Trip, which runs Oct. 6 through 8 at the same Indio venue. The lineup features the most iconic groups in the genre: Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Tool and Metallica.
Former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne was scheduled to perform at the festival, but pulled out in July due to ongoing health issues . He was replaced by English heavy metal band Judas Priest.
Osbourne's absence will be impossible to ignore, and it's expected that at least one or two of the bands performing at the festival will pay tribute to the "Prince of Darkness," especially because Metallica toured with Osbourne during the band's early years and Judas Priest has shared the stage with him on numerous occasions. During a 2019 interview, Maynard James Keenan of Tool referred to Osbourne and Black Sabbath as his earliest musical influences .
All of the performances will be entertaining and impressive, to say the least. Each band features high-level production value during every tour in the form of stunning visuals, themed stage setups, and an overabundance of pyrotechnics and on-stage explosions. Combine all of that with the vigor, mischievousness, spirit and angst of heavy metal, each band's live show is certain to be an unforgettable experience.
Here is what we are hoping to hear — and see — from each band.
Iron Maiden
As someone who has never seen Iron Maiden, I'm excited to see what the British heavy metal icons will bring to the festival. The band's last performance was in August at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany as part of "The Future Past" tour and featured many classics such as "Stranger In A Strange Land," "The Prisoner," "Can I Play With Madness" and of course "The Trooper," which no Maiden performance can exclude.
The band dusted off some classics from the 1986 album "Somewhere Back In Time" and opened each show with "Caught Somewhere in Time," which hadn't been played since 1987. Fans also got the first live performances of "Alexander the Great."
With three shows in Canada in September and October before the final tour date at Power Trip, I'm hoping lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson and the rest of the band will treat the Power Trip to more rarely played songs such as "Powerslave" and "Sea of Madness."
—Brian Blueskye
It's been said that the members of Iron Maiden are the undisputed kings of Big Metal Shows with their stage setup and pyrotechnics, and that it's "a religious experience." So, I'm looking forward to seeing what exactly that entails.
Most longtime fans of the genre know that Iron Maiden shows are iconic. They've been the stuff of legend for decades. One has to wonder if playing at a festival like Power Trip only ups the ante, so to speak, on what Iron Maiden does to further that legend at a one-of-a-kind show that should be remembered for a long, long time by those who attend.
—Andrew John
Guns N' Roses
Guns N' Roses already has something special to offer locals who watch the band at Power Trip — the energetic live performance its members are known for.
The last time Guns N' Roses performed in the area — when the group headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2016 — it was a special occasion for the reunited lineup featuring frontman Axl Rose with guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan . But there was a problem. No, the band didn't pull any of its infamous antics of the past such as showing up late or calling the show early, but Rose had to perform the two-and-a-half-hour set both weekends with a broken foot sitting in a throne loaned to him by Dave Grohl.
Since then, the original members have been making up two decades apart and continued to tour arenas and stadiums around the globe. It's hard to say when fans will see a new album, but the Guns have released three new singles since 2021.
Guns N' Roses' 25-30 song recent setlists feature many of the known hits from "Appetite For Destruction," "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II." McKagan is also known to perform lead vocals on selections from the 1993 covers album "The Spaghetti Incident?" such as The Misfits' "Attitude," The Damned's "New Rose" or UK Subs' "Down on the Farm." An intriguing addition since 2017 is the Glen Campbell tune "Wichita Lineman."
I don't expect anything less than Guns N' Roses bringing an ear-splitting, high-powered good time, but why not invite metal god and Misfits frontman Glenn Danzig for "Attitude" or do something crazy like bring out Bob Dylan for that cover of "Knockin' On Heavens Door?"
Judas Priest
Judas Priest celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022 with a large world tour, and the group hasn't performed since last December, but when you're asked to replace Ozzy Osbourne, you don't say no. It's hard to say whether Priest will stay in anniversary mode and perform the previous tour's set that's full of classics such as "Breaking The Law" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" and "Living After Midnight" or throw some other songs in the mix like "Never Satisfied" or its cover of Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."
At the end of the day, a set full of classic Judas Priest songs sounds like fun, so I'm hoping for the 50th anniversary show.
In 2020, AC/DC released the album “Power Up,” but left fans waiting on tour dates coming out of the pandemic. Power Trip will mark the band's first show in seven years, so there's a lot of warranted excitement around the performance — especially considering the obstacles the group faced in 2016. That's when frontman Brian Johnson left the band because of medical issues and bassist Cliff Williams retired, but both returned in 2018, including former drummer Phil Rudd, who was fired in 2015 due to legal issues.
AC/DC’s comeback will feature Johnson, Williams, guitarists Angus Young and Stevie Young, but Rudd will not be at Power Trip. Matt Laug, who has drummed for Alice Cooper, Slash’s Snakepit and Alanis Morissette, will fill in.
I have no doubts that AC/DC will deliver and Power Trip will be a renewal of the legendary Australian band that is also celebrating 50 years. I'm hoping to hear classics such as "Thunderstruck," "Shoot To Thrill" and "Moneytalks."
Ask anyone who has been to an AC/DC concert and they'll tell you that it's one of the best music experiences of their lives. I've had people describe it to me as "mind-blowing," "unforgettable" and "different every time." So, I want to see what makes this concert, in particular, unique and unforgettable.
I've been to some amazing concerts in my day, over a 27-year stretch, but I'm told that AC/DC will rock harder than maybe anyone, so I have to see what that looks like for myself.
AC/DC has rarely played with other rock legends onstage, although Axl Rose sang for the band in 2016 while Brian Johnson dealt with hearing issues. But that has me wondering whether they could bring a rock legend out at Power Trip. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has performed "Back in Black" with Johnson and has said that he would love to perform with AC/DC one day. Maybe at Power Trip he gets his chance. That would really be something.
The best way to describe a Tool concert based on my own experience is "surrealistic," but there's never been anything ordinary in the band's music, which extends to its live performances. Consider Tool to be more of an audio and visual affair than a concert. Frontman Maynard James Keenan doesn't thirst for being front and center. The music is the purpose and will be the main idea throughout the entire set.
For those who attended Desert Trip in 2016 and saw former Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters' performance, I expect the atmosphere of Tool's live show to be the same and unlike any of the other bands performing at Power Trip, but without the inflatable pig and heavy political themes.
I'm hoping Tool will recognize the 30th anniversary of the album "Undertow" and perform some songs that have only appeared sporadically in recent setlists. Songs such as "Sober," "Undertow" and "Flood" are the epitome of Tool as a band, but it's going to be all about what fits into the live presentation.
Power Trip will end Sunday with Metallica, one of the world's most famous metal bands that was already selling out arenas before MTV played its videos. The band is currently on its M72 tour playing in stadiums around the globe, performing songs from the 1983 debut album “Kill ‘Em All” to the 2023 album “72 Seasons.”
Metallica performed in August at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and it’s likely many who attended that show will be at Power Trip.
Metallica has acknowledged special occasions, so I expect a remarkable show to end Power Trip. Maybe something like the Big 4 show in 2010 at the Empire Polo Club when Metallica performed Diamond Head’s “Am I Evil?” with members from other the bands. Maybe even a guest appearance by King Diamond, or one of the many artists such as St. Vincent or Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor who performed on the "Black Album" tribute, "The Metallica Blacklist."
—Brian Bluesky e
I'm looking forward to seeing how loud these guys are, and how well my earplugs work. In all seriousness, I live in La Quinta, not far from the polo grounds and can often hear music from the festivals from my porch. But I hear that Metallica is super loud live, and I can imagine most of the surrounding neighborhoods will feel that once the group opens with "Ecstasy of Gold."
I'm also looking forward to seeing how much of the crowd is older Metallica fans versus younger listeners, many of whom I assume will merely be there to see an iconic band before it's too late. Metallica is of course a group that has fans from every generation, but most of the truest fans are likely between the ages of 40-60. I'll bet many of them can still rock as hard as the younger fans.
I'll be right there alongside all of them, watching a band I've listened to for decades but have yet to see live.

Despite the band releasing a new album, Power Up , in 2020, this will be the first time they have played live together in seven years, and the first since guitarist Malcolm Young passed away in 2017. Young was forced to retire from touring due to ill health in 2014, and was joined in retirement by vocalist Brian Johnson in 2016, who was advised by doctors to retire mid-tour due to hearing damage – he was replaced for the rest of the tour by Axl Rose.
Happily, however, Johnson will likely be able to return to the stage with AC/DC for the Power Trip performance thanks to a new type of in-ear monitor that will protect his damaged hearing while he fronts one of rock’s most enduringly popular bands.
Young’s nephew Stevie replaced Malcolm following his retirement and will join the returning Phil Rudd on drums, alongside the ever-present and seemingly indefatigable Angus Young on lead guitar.
Alongside AC/DC the Power Trip Festival will see performances from Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne, who announced he would be performing this week just months after retiring from touring due to ongoing health problems.
Tickets for the three-day rock festival, which take place in the Coachella festival grounds, are set for release on 6 April at 10am Pacific Time. There are also a variety of hotel and VIP packages to choose from.
This is not the first time that some of the star-studded line up have been on the same bill – Metallica did a co-headline tour with Guns N’ Roses back in 1992.
AC/DC has not yet scheduled any future performances, but considering the whole band is performing for this one show, it would be unsurprising if they had more planned in the future.

Iron Maiden & Guns N’ Roses Kick Off Powertrip Festival In Indio, CA (RECAP)
- By Ryan Dillon
This weekend is a very special one for die-hard fans of legendary heavy rock. Last night (October 6) was the first night of Power Trip, a specially curated festival located in the heart of Indio, California. The remote festival location is welcoming six iconic bands that have each left their own special mark in the world of rock & roll. Friday night’s show saw the iconic Guns N’ Roses and legendary Iron Maiden set things off for what is promising to be an unforgettable weekend of music. Power Trip is a three-day festival put together by Goldenvoice, the same company that pieced together the 2016 festival which featured acts like the Rolling Stones, Roger Waters, and The Who. With Power Trip 2023 underway, things are starting to heat up in California.
Guns N’ Roses pieced together a career-spanning setlist for their spot at the festival. They kicked things off with “It’s So Easy” from their classic 1987 release Appetite for Destruction , an album that got special attention last night. Eight tracks of the band’s 29-song setlist came from their legendary LP with Guns N’ Roses pulling out songs like “Paradise City”, “Rocket Queen”, and “Welcome To The Jungle”. The band also pulled from their influences, covering songs from Bob Dylan, Wings, The Stooges, and Jimmy Webb’s (made famous by Glen Campbell) “Wichita Lineman”. Guns N’ Roses also performed songs from both of their Use Your Illusion albums, performing songs like “Bad Obsession” and “Civil War”.
Iron Maiden kept things tight and honed for their performance. The band kept a heavy focus on their newer releases by performing tracks from their 2021 LP Senjutsu with songs like “The Time Machine” and “The Writing On The Wall”. They then threw it back to their 1986 release, Somewhere in Time with classics like “Caught Somewhere In Time”, “Heaven Can Wait”, and “Wasted Years”. This year’s breeakout song for them has “Alexander the Great” off 1986’s “Somewhere In Time” which previously to 2023, was never played live- saw its 37th appearance of 2023. The band then skipped through their discography with performances of “The Trooper” and “The Prisoner”.
With day one of Power Trio 2023 down, things are already shaping up to become a legendary moment in music history. Day two kicks off tonight with AC/DC and Judas Priest performing while Sunday (Day three) will feature Metallica and Tool. Check out the full setlist and footage from last night’s show below.

Prepare Yourself for the Inaugural Edition of Power Trip Festival – Led by GNR, Ozzy, AC/DC, Maiden, Metallica and Tool
Indio, Empire Polo Club, California, is about to turn into the mecca of hard rock this autumn as the brand new Power Trip Festival announces its lineup of iconic heavyweights. An evolution of the 2016 Desert Trip Festival, the concert would host 2 acts each day for a period of three days at the Coachella grounds.
The lineup of rock and metal bands includes Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and Tool. The gig will mark AC/DC’s return to the limelight post their December 2016 concert featuring Axl Rose, while frontman Brian Johnson was recovering from hearing loss. Additionally, Power Trip will also mark Ozzy’s first full-length concert since 2018, after which he stopped performing due to an accident.

Guns N’ Roses, who were already scheduled to be on the West Coast for a weekend-closing set at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento on Oct. 8, will be one of the opening night performers for Power Trip on Friday, Oct. 6 along with Iron Maiden.
Saturday (Oct. 7) will feature AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne sharing the concert stage, featuring two highly anticipated concert returns for legendary veteran acts. Finally, the closing date for the weekend (Oct 8) will be headlined by Metallica and Tool.
Earlier this week, the bands teased the festival’s announcement on their respective social media. Desert Trip in 2016 featured Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Roger Waters, and the Who. Like Desert Trip, Power Trip is being put on by Goldenvoice.
