KEXP presents Kiasmos performing live at Kex Hostel, Reykjavik

KEXP.ORG presents Kiasmos performing live at Kex Hostel in Reykjavik during Iceland Airwaves.

Kiasmos is made up of Icelandic BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavík, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen’s other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music. They eventually became best friends, often hanging out in their studio, exploring electronic sounds.

After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro-pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines, and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

Kiasmos' Blurred is part crescendo, part heartbreak

"blurred ep".

ERATP102 cover

Surfing the present wave of contemporary classical, of which BAFTA-winning composer Arnalds is arguably one of the biggest players in his own right, the pair have orchestrated a characteristically sublime relationship between acoustic and programmed elements, where other efforts have sounded flat or contrived.

Much, much more than the cobbling together of classical and electronic music, Kiasmos’s sound, their identity, is an artisanal alloy of piano, strings, synths and drum machines, tightly wrought with gravity and emotion.

Intially a mutual side project, their self-titled debut album was released through Erased Tapes in 2014, its deft, glacial beats, minimalist piano and vivid synth and string arrangements earning critical acclaim. A central plank of the album is the affecting way in which light and dark, or soft and harsh, are balanced against one another.

"Bent" and "Burnt", the closing tracks, are especially excellent in this regard, with increasingly abrasive and jagged synths almost taunting the unwavering melancholy of simple, repeating piano melodies. In fact it’s this minimalism, a hallmark of Arnalds’ solo work, and the brutally economical way in which Kiasmos are able to wrench on the emotions with so little, that has distinguished their potency as a production duo.

And so they return, following two years of worldwide touring, with new EP Blurred . Four new tracks are joined by remixes from Bonobo and Stimming and while undercurrents of heartache remain, for the most part, the EP is heavy on twinkling, layered high ends and uplifting crescendos.

Opener "Shed", in stark contrast to the slow burning introductions of "Lit" and "Drawn" from previous releases, jumps straight into things for what is undoubtedly Kiasmos’s brightest, most optimistic tune to date – not a minor chord in sight. It’s nice if not slightly mawkish, signalling a shift in tone from previous releases.

"Jarred" and "Paused" are each as reliably stirring as the rest of the Kiasmos catalogue, but struggle to match the levels of urgency found elsewhere. The former is rescued by a beautiful, multichromatic second half, furnished with Debussy-esque piano trills, but if it weren’t for such detailed and accomplished levels of production, these two tracks would be much easier to overlook.

The apex of the EP is undoubtedly the title track, building on an ascending chord progression and busy, buoyant strings – the latter a dynamic counterpoint to the steady, ambling piano. Bonobo’s reworking does exactly as expected. It’s a faithful and engaging remodelling in the producer’s image, replete with trademark wooden percussion, all bells and whistles – a messy, pretty foil for the original’s cinematic severity.

Ultimately though, the release as a whole feels slightly restrained. There’s none of the apocalyptic intensity of the album, no tension between grit and grandiosity, or the emotional ambiguity of tracks like "Swept", "Thrown" and "Looped". Luckily, these productions remain of such a high quality that they’ve avoided sounding too tedious. By their next release, let’s hope Kiasmos can build on these rock solid foundations. Everything they’ve done so far is pointing in the right direction.

Amidst all the noise I found Ella’s video. Her mesmerising voice over my improvisation just floored me. And after I had listened to it about 30 times I decided to just get in touch. Covering a wide variety of sub-genres such as dubstep dance-pop and house, the techno movement has become a major and multifaceted force on the popular music scene.

There is a rich history behind its modern sound with origins stemming from reggae and hip-hop influences. The genre reverberates a fresh approach to a style that has been evolving for decades. Beginning with pioneer musical engineers like King Tubby, an array of performers has brought EDM into the realm of popular culture. Kiasmos is composed of Janus Rasmussen and Ólafur Arnalds who is a headliner Modern Classical from Iceland.

The concert was pretty good at pretty good venue that has good sound system. There were no drunk crowd, which often there are, I was able to immerse myself in their sound genuinely.

People are missing another great sound experience from Iceland. They are a new addition of my favorite Icelandic artists like Bjork, Sigur Rós, Mum, Asgeir.

Last show of the current tour, apparently. 300+ shows later, sorry to say it felt a bit tired. I thought Vicar Street would suit them, but having seen them rock the roof off two years earlier in the much dingier District 8 a couple of hundred meters away, they really didn't rise to the occasion. Not a bad gig as such, but I think it's time to get back in the studio and get that second album down.

It was exactly what I expected: a transcendental experience without resorting to other substances. When I closed my eyes, I could really feel myself inside the melodies, even though the usual garrulous people were there to annoy you.

The sound was strong, cohese and the bass was the best!

It was a great night! magnificent lighting and sound, in a very special location.

The audience was very mature and pleasant, really good atmosphere.

I think the onley thing that could have make the sound perfect is amplification from the back of the hall.

thank you Kiasmos!!!!

It was an amazing show at the Electric Brixton. The sound was overwhelming and at one point Kiasmos really blew my mind. The venue was really nice as well, with an excited crowd sharing this great experience.

Great set. Brilliant sound and they really read the crowd to give the music more impact. There were a few tech issues and an hour and twenty mins seemed short but big thumbs up none the less.

Amazing one hour live set from Kiasmos at the Printworks in London. The set was perfectly paced and built, reigning in all the crowd. I would definitely see them again.
