Sous-prefecture of Isere, La Tour-du-Pin is a commune in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region located in the heart of historical Dauphine. It takes place forty kilometers from Lyon, and about sixty kilometers from Grenoble , not far from the airports of Lyon Saint-Exupéry or Chambéry-Savoie.

A strategic city since the Gallo-Roman era, La Tour-du-Pin was located on the road linking Lyon and Vienna to neighboring Italy. Became a powerful barony of the county of Savoy in the twelfth century, she took the road to the kingdom of France in the middle of the fourteenth century, with the rest of Dauphine.

Even today, it is possible to admire many architectural remains that trace the entire history of La Tour-du-Pin through the centuries, revealing its richness and multiculturalism.

• Built in the 19th century, on the remains of an earlier building, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church houses a 16th century wooden triptych classified as an historic monument. The latter represents the Entombment, the Ascent from Calvary, as well as the Descent from the Cross, Ecce homo and Saint Jerome.
• Several castles also take place on the territory of La Tour-du-Pin, like that of Cuirieu built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The latter is listed in the Historic Monuments, in particular for its French garden and for its outbuildings. It is also possible to admire the castle of Tournin . Built at the same time as the previous one, it is partly listed in the Historic Monuments for its facades, roofs, garden and courtyard. Do not miss the Château de Châbons either, a 17th century building built on the site of an old farmyard building of a medieval castle.
• Transformed into a cultural center, the old halls of La Tour-du-Pin are still visible, as are some vestiges of the old fortifications, like the Henri IV tower.
• Also listed as a Historic Monument, the Maison des Dauphins dates back to the 16th century and deserves a stop.
• Several possibilities for free discovery of the city are available to you:

• For the more athletic, two orientation courses are available, one for children and a second, longer, for adults.

“They have learned nothing and forgotten nothing,” the crafty Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand said of the French Bourbons. He might have exempted Lucie de la Tour du Pin, who possessed survival skills that matched his own and whose vivid memoirs, begun when she was 50, have never been out of print. Born in the fashionable Faubourg St.-Germain quarter of Paris in 1770, the same year that more than 6,000 lice-ridden babies were abandoned in doorways and royal pastry chefs were spinning rococo scenes in powdered sugar, she realized by the age of 19 that “we were laughing and dancing our way to the precipice.” This was a woman who would learn a great deal more.

That remark gives Caroline Moorehead the title of her absorbing new book, which documents with stylistic élan and meticulous detail a reeling period of French history, from the ludicrous court of Louis XVI to the Revolution of 1789 and the dictatorship of Napoleon, itself followed by the speedy restoration and deposition of Bourbon kings. Drawing on de la Tour du Pin’s memoirs and previously unseen family papers, the author narrates this wrenching history mostly from the perspective of its central figure, who was an “eyewitness to an era.”

“I had no real childhood,” de la Tour du Pin, who was descended from Irish-French nobility, noted with characteristic understatement. Her soldier father was away much of the time (fighting, for instance, on the side of the Americans during their revolution), and her ineffectual mother, a lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette, was no match for Madame de Rothe, Lucie’s domineering and grasping grandmother. De Rothe, whom Lucie hated, presided over the household on behalf of her presumed lover, the Archbishop of Toulouse and Narbonne, who was also Lucie’s great-uncle.

If unhappy in youth, de la Tour du Pin was lucky when it came time to establish a life of her own. In 1787, she married Frédéric-­Séraphim de Gouvernet, a nobleman and soldier whom she had never met before their official engagement, but who had known her father during the American war. Eventually he stayed closer to home, in what turned out to be an unusually good marriage, lasting almost 50 years. Of course, home was no longer fixed. A constitutional monarchist and aristocratic liberal, Frédéric was in the odd position, as Moorehead observes, of helping to incite the revolution that led to his family’s peripatetic life of exile, not to mention the guillotining of countless friends and relatives.

Though there is no shortage of chroniclers of the French Revolution — Edmund Burke, Gouverneur Morris, Hippolyte Taine, Jules Michelet, all quoted by Moorehead to great effect — “Dancing to the Precipice” brings to the story a gruesome immediacy and an elegant sense of the absurd. Both are evident in Moorehead’s description of Lucie de la Tour du Pin’s clandestine life in Bordeaux at the height of the Terror, when the sticky-sweet smell of blood clung to the paving stones as a parade of victims climbed to the scaffold, some executed for treasonous crimes like a “weak nature” or “nostalgia for the ancien régime.” With a strong narrative voice that neither vamps nor moralizes, she also describes the profligacy of the royal court with deadpan precision: the huge wigs stuffed with horsehair, favored by Marie Antoinette, which were so tall that women had to keep their heads jutting out of their carriage windows, or the exotic animals dragged to Versailles for Rousseau-­inspired “arrangements of plants, and lakes and rivers created, artificially,” Moorehead dryly remarks, “to convey the simple, artless life.”

By 1794, with the Terror in full force, de la Tour du Pin managed to secure passports for herself and her family (by then she had two children). In March, they all boarded the Boston-bound ship Diana, hauling with them 50 bottles of Burgundy, jars of potted goose and jam, and a piano — since no one imagined such an instrument could be procured on the other side of the Atlantic. Settling in upstate New York among Schuylers and van Rensselaers — America’s Dutch aristocracy, made rich through farming and the appropriation of Iroquois hunting grounds — de la Tour du Pin adjusted to her new life with surprising ease, acquiring five slaves, albeit with some hesitation, to help with the 150 acres of crops, the large apple orchard and the dairy she and Frédéric bought after selling off her possessions, among them the piano.

Following Robespierre’s death, when the property confiscated from French émigrés was handed back to its former owners, she reluctantly gave up the farm, where she had felt far safer than in France. After freeing their slaves, she and her husband sailed home to reclaim their estate. In less than two years, however, an attempted right-wing coup again sent them packing, this time to England, where they stayed until Napoleon assumed power and wigs were back in vogue. Although de la Tour du Pin declined an invitation to be lady-in-waiting to the Empress Josephine, she spent evenings in her company in Bordeaux at the express order of Napoleon, whom she had always found charming. In 1808, Frédéric was appointed Prefect of Brussels, and in 1813 of Amiens. But much as she had admired Napoleon, after his defeat at Waterloo, de la Tour du Pin threw her support to the restored Bourbon monarch. After all, Frédéric had already landed on his feet as ambassador to The Hague — with a peerage. Moorehead makes little of this volte-face except to say that de la Tour du Pin and her husband were “constitutional monarchists at heart.”

Breathlessly crowded (sometimes cluttered) with event, character and sly social history (as well as a running commentary on French fashion), “Dancing to the Precipice” reveals little of its subject’s inner life. Her keen powers of observation were not turned on herself, as far as we know, and Moorehead, to her credit, is no biographical busybody. Quite the opposite. Her restraint is not unlike her subject’s, and for the most part she lets de la Tour du Pin speak for herself. She who consorted with Germaine de Staël, Talleyrand and Chateaubriand thus comes across as slightly snobbish and without a gift for introspection, but hard-working and basically decent. Well trained in the art of subterfuge, though she liked to affect the opposite, she was, in sum, a likable opportunist with remarkable staying power.

Pregnant 10 times, she bore six children, only one of whom survived her. “I feel myself to be an old tree,” de la Tour du Pin said after her beloved Frédéric’s death, “from which every day someone cuts off a branch.” Deftly rendering these blows, Moorehead empathetically suggests why Lucie de la Tour du Pin did not look inward or give up or perish. She had lost family and friends, kings and courts, possessions and place. “There are things in life that one should neither analyze nor go on and on about,” Moorehead quotes her as saying. “Absence is one of these.” Copying out her cleareyed memoirs into red leather notebooks as France convulsed once again, with Louis-Philippe deposed and Louis-Napoleon crowned as Emperor Napoleon III, de la Tour du Pin did what she did best: she endured.

Upon arrival and during your stay, you have hydro-alcoholic gel at the entrance. Ground marking indicates the distance between people. The home bank has a protective screen. The space is ventilated, cleaned and disinfected regularly.

The buffet is temporarily not accessible in self-service. All its elements are served at your table and at will. A breakfast tray in room is possible on request with an electric kettle, tea bags, coffee pods, packaged pastries, fruit compote, fruit juice.

• Bar and lounge are closed until further notice :

Room service of drinks and snacks is maintained. The menu is provided on the tablet / desk.

• Room cleaning service is adapted :

To limit contacts and risks of virus transmission, we do not provide the daily cleaning service of your room. Obviously, replacement bath linen and hygiene products are available on request. Rooms are fully cleaned, following a Covid-19 protocol, from each customer after a regulatory aeration phase. If you find an anomaly or problem in the room that cannot be dealt with in satisfactory health regulations, we can assign you another one.

When you leave, we ask you to open the window in order to allow effective ventilation before the intervention of the cleaning staff.

Happy #HalfwaytoHalloween! Disney Experiences is once again celebrating the halfway point to the Halloween season with some mischievous news and announcements that will brighten even those who are rotten to the core. With wickedly fun entertainment updates, frighteningly fabulous Halloween merchandise, and scarily stunning wallpapers, we’re compiling some dastardly delightful ways to celebrate Halfway to Halloween. Gaze into the magic mirror and read on to see what tricks we’ve got up our sleeves for the Halloween season and beyond across Disney Experiences!

Walt Disney World

Experience favorite entertainment, new offerings, and trick-or-treating during the highly anticipated return of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort! Get ready to strike a pose with Mickey and Minnie in their new costumes during the party, meet Bruno alongside Mirabel in the Fantasy Garden, and even show off your best villain dance moves in the new DescenDANCE Party inspired by the upcoming Disney+ movie,  “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” during this year’s separately ticketed event, which will kick off on Aug. 9 and will take place on select nights through Oct. 31.  

Don’t miss out on all the spooktacular fun and be sure to secure your spot. Event tickets go on sale for guests of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels, and Shades of Green starting May 8. Tickets will be available to all guests starting May 15.

Disneyland Resort

With more nights than ever before,  Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party  will return to Disney California Adventure park for the 2024 Halloween season, with plenty of villains lurking at every corner! For a frightfully fun time at this separately ticketed, after-hours event, guests of all ages are invited to wear their favorite Halloween costumes* and enjoy an evening of immersive treat trails, unique character sightings, special entertainment, themed merchandise, food and beverages available only during Oogie Boogie Bash nights, and so much more! 

Admission to the after-hours event also includes entrance to Disney California Adventure park three hours before the party begins and unlimited Disney PhotoPass digital photo downloads from the party. Halloween on the High Seas

Halloween on the High Seas sets sail again for Disney Cruise Line in 2024! This year, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck don new costumes for the celebration! Mickey and Minnie are both dapper and spooky in their batty ensembles, and never to be outdone, Donald has put together a gentleman spider costume sure to impress (His spidery legs are ready to boogie!). Check out the crew in their newest ensembles, have a scarily good time at Mickey’s Mouse-querade, trick or treat, and nibble on frightening eats and drinks on Halloween on the High Seas sailings setting sail on select dates in September and October.

Disney Treasure

In addition, to really celebrate #HalfwaytoHalloween, we’re revealing new spooky décor details coming to the Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Treasure, which sets sail this December. From a ghost fish aquarium to an eerie portrait gallery, there will be so much to explore in this first-of-its-kind bar. When the ship launches later this year, you’ll be invited to experience the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga for yourself! 

A “Shriek Peek” at New and Returning Merchandise

Happy haunts will materialize this Halloween season while shopping at Disney Parks and on DisneyStore.com. Between the return of the popular Mickey Mouse pumpkin home décor, frightfully fun clothes featuring Mickey Mouse and Friends, and a hauntingly new collection inspired by the Haunted Mansion, there’s tricks and treats aplenty and even more surprises coming later this season! It’s time for frights and thrills at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. From Sept. 12 to Oct. 31, come experience Halloween where favorites such as House of De Vil-lains, award-winning show “Let’s Get Wicked” and Nightmare Before Dinner experience, complete with character greetings and an atmosphere show, will return. 

Disneyland Paris

Your upcoming visit to Disneyland Paris just got a little ghastly. You heard it here first — Disney Halloween Festival will be Oct. 1 to Nov. 3! Relish in this spellbinding atmosphere with the return of fan-favorite show Mickey’s Halloween Celebration, meet your favorite Disney Villains, experience the iconic Phantom Manor, and so much more!

You’re invited to Disney Halloween at Tokyo Disney Resort! Enjoy brand new theming at Tokyo Disneyland, new entertainment and more from Oct. 1 to Nov. 7. Can’t wait? Catch your favorite Disney Villains year-round at Tokyo Disneyland in the Club Mouse Beat and Mickey’s Magical World shows!

Descendants: The Rise of Red

Halfway to Halloween is the perfect time to start preparing to visit our favorite villains – and heroes – in Auradon once again for the newest installment in the mega-hit “Descendants” franchise. “Descendants: The Rise of Red” follows Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, who is forced to team up with her opposite Chloe, Cinderella’s daughter, when they travel back in time to save Auradon. The Disney Original movie starts streaming July 12 on Disney+, but you can now stream the first single from the movie, “What’s My Name (Red Version).” In this new music video, China Anne McClain reprises her “Descendants 2” anthem as Uma, the daughter of Ursula, alongside Kylie Cantrall who stars as newcomer Red.  

The track will be featured on the soundtrack set for release on July 12, the same day “Descendants: The Rise of Red” arrives on Disney+. As you eagerly await the new film, get into the villainous spirit with the greatest hits vinyl album, “Music From Descendants,” featuring hit songs from the first three films,  now available for purchase , or cozy up and read “Beyond the Isle of the Lost” by New York Times best-selling author Melissa de la Cruz, a madcap prequel to “Descendants: The Rise of Red.”
