A Complete Guide to Visiting the City of Hai Phong

hai phong city tour

A trip to northern Vietnam should always include a stop at Hai Phong, an important industrial center and seaport in the Red River Delta. Whether you travel to Hai Phong to seek out its beautiful architectural and cultural treasures or as a stop on the way to Ha Long Bay and beyond, don’t miss the opportunity to see what Hai Phong has to offer.

The History of Hai Phong

History of Hai Phong

Hai Phong’s recorded history dates back to 43 AD, when Le Chan, a formidable female general, founded the strategic city in order to repel invading Chinese troops. The city’s name means “coastal defense.” The fierceness of the ocean nearby and its critical location on the waterways that lead into Vietnam’s interior not only made it easily defensible but vastly important for trade and commerce with Hanoi and the seafaring traders that arrived from India, China, the Mediterranean, and, eventually, Western Europe and Britain.

Hai Phong continued to be an important defensive city throughout the Middle Ages. In 1881, however, tragedy struck when a vicious cyclone tore through the city and killed around 300,000 people, leaving it weak to invasion. In 1885, the French gained control of Vietnam and turned Hai Phong into their naval center to support nearby Hanoi, the political center. Later, the city served as North Vietnam’s sole seaport during the Vietnam War.

Today, Hai Phong is the third largest city in Vietnam after Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and the second largest economic center in Northern Vietnam, home to thriving industries such as agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing. In recent years, it has also gained popularity as a tourist destination. Hai Phong serves as both a destination of its own and a jumping point to Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba Island, and other area attractions.

Best Time to Visit

Northern Vietnam Region

Northern Vietnam has two seasons: hot-and-wet and cool-and-dry. While Vietnam is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year, spring (March and April) and fall (September through December) in the north, where Hai Phong is located, offer the most equable temperatures and best chances of cooperative weather.

About Hai Phong

Hai Phong Bridge

Hai Phong is located on the northern arm of the Red River Delta, a vast dumping ground for the rich silt picked up during the Red River’s long 750 mile journey (1,200 km) through southwestern China and out into the Gulf of Tonkin. Hai Phong is also located near huge coal deposits, which helped turn the city into a center for industry.

Although it has a strong commercial and industrial base, the city itself is delightfully colonial mixed with modern construction. Cultural attractions abound, including temples, shrines, pagodas, mausoleums, museums, art, architecture, and restaurants that serve up delicious local fare. You’ll also find beautiful beaches, lots of shopping, and an exuberant nightlife scene.

One of Hai Phong’s most iconic sights is streets lined with Flame of the Forest trees, which delight the eyes with their bright red blooms during the summer months. The annual Red Flamboyant Festival in May brings art troupes from all over Asia as well as other performances and exhibits to celebrate the vivid flowering of the trees.

Attractions Near Hai Phong

Du hong pagoda.

Du Hong Pagoda

Built during the Le Gia Tong dynasty of the 17 th century, this Buddhist pagoda reflects an ancient and respected building style from the 10 th century, including Indian- and Cambodian-style roofs in the alter rooms and more recent artistic additions from the early 20 th century. The beautifully constructed pagoda is overlooked by a bell tower and is nestled among serene gardens. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful quiet, bring bread to feed the turtles and fish, and revel in the artistry evident all throughout the compound. The structure is used as a temple by the community, and it is renowned for the exquisite woodwork used in the construction as well as the 300+ brightly colored dragon images and statues contained within. The site is open to visitors all year round and often houses festivals and religious ceremonies. Find the Hong Khen Communal House in Du Hong Khen Ward in the Le Chan District.

Municipal Theater and Municipal Theater Square

Hai Phong Municipal Theater

Designed by French architects and built using imported materials, the theater is designed to hold up to 400 people. The ceiling of the theater is painted with frescoes and flowers as well as the names of famous writers and artists. Outside, Theater Square provides a peaceful and beautiful oasis from the city, with fountains, flower gardens, and sparkling lights. Call ahead or check with your hotel concierge for public opening times and dates, as these change according to the theater’s event schedule.

Hai Phong City Museum

What the museum lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality. Housed in a beautiful Gothic colonial building, the museum displays artifacts from Hai Phong’s past, including finds from ancient nearby tombs, ceramics, taxidermy, and remnants of war in the garden area—all with written English translations. For those looking to understand Hai Phong’s role as an important seaport over the centuries, a visit to this museum is a must. Be advised that it is only open four days a week for a couple hours at a time, and plan your sight seeing schedule accordingly: Tuesday and Thursday from 8am – 10:30am, and Wednesday and Sunday from 7:30pm – 9:30pm.

Museum of Military Region III

Exhibits include fascinating war detritus such as bombs and other weapons. Open Monday through Friday from 7:30am – 11am, and 1pm – 4pm. Closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Admission is free, and opening hours are on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8am – 11am.

Nghe Temple

Nghe Temple in Hai Phong

The Nghe Temple, once a small shrine and later built into a more impressive temple, honors Hai Phong’s founder, the female General Le Chan, who worked under the Trung sisters to help repel Chinese invaders in 43 AD. Locals consider it an important religious site, so please dress and act respectfully. Visitors will be fascinated by the intricately carved stonework that adorns the walls, roof, and steps of the temple. The temple is open all year round.

Bao Dai Villa

Bao Dai Villa

Originally built in 1928 by the French Governor-General of Indochina, Bao Dai Villa was later offered to Vietnam’s last emperor, Bao Dai, in 1946. The emperor loved to visit the villa during summer excursions to the Hai Phong area, enjoying the exquisite views of Do Son Peninsula. Today, the villa is a hotel where guests can pore over old royal photos, try on royal costumes (and take picture souvenirs), and see Bao Dai’s throne as well as taking in the beautiful views. The villa is open to guests all year round.

Visitors will get the opportunity to visit Hai Phong City highlights as well as take day trips to Ha Long Bay, all tidily planned and executed with precision and comfort. All tours include hotel pickup and drop-off. Mr. Phuong is a native of Hai Phong and is incredibly versed in the history of the city as well as of its hidden treasures.

Tam Bac Lake and Flower Market (Quan hoa)

Hai Phong Flower Market

Enjoy a pleasant walk under the trees along the lake’s shore and visit the Flower Market on the eastern side of the lake. The flower market is comprised of five splendid arched-roof kiosks built in 1941 by the French as a beautiful place in which to buy fresh flowers. Also within easy walking distance of the lake and market is a massive bronze statue of the female General Le Chan, ancient Vietnamese hero and founder of Hai Phong city.

The Colonial Quarter

Colonial Quarter in Hai Phong

Dien Bien Phu Street and Tran Hung Dao Street have survived many conflicts to become part of the city’s Colonial Quarter, a bastion of surviving French architecture and charm within Hai Phong. Grand colonial buildings, mature trees that line the broad streets, and a thriving café culture all speak to the French influences that helped create this part of old Hai Phong. Stroll the boulevards and gaze at the beautiful buildings, and top off the afternoon of sight seeing by enjoying a drink and a snack at an outdoor café while watching the crowd go by.

Exotic Excursions

Cat ba island.

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island is the largest island in Ha Long Bay, a body of water littered with majestic limestone karsts in a blue-green sea. Cat Ba Island is large enough to support a town, and this town is the most popular overnight stop on Ha Long Bay cruises. Stay a few hours or a few days while you explore the mysterious caves, beautiful beaches, and rugged national park on the island. It’s easy to book transportation from Hai Phong Bay, and travel time from the port to the island takes about 45 minutes, with another 15 minutes of travel by bus to Cat Ba Town.

Do Son Beach

Do Son Beach near Hai Phong

22 km (14 miles) from Hai Phong lie the three beaches of Do Son as well as the country’s only casino. What was once a popular resort area for the French is now popular among the Vietnamese—especially sun seekers traveling from Hanoi. Relax on the white sand beaches, visit the remains of an ancient clay tower and Buddhist temple on Ngoc Son Mountain (including the famous temple bell that was submerged in water for several centuries after a large storm knocked it out of its place), and watch traditional buffalo fighting during the annual Buffalo Festival in September or October (you’ll want to arrive on the 9 th day of the 8 th month according to the lunar calendar to see the fun).

Traditional Hai Phong Food

Because Hai Phong is a harbor city, fresh seafood is widely available for some of the most delicious dishes you have ever tasted. The most famous of the traditional Hai Phong foods rely on the daily catch for their main ingredients.

Banh Da Cua (Brown Noodles with Crab)

Banh Da Cua

Chewy brown rice noodles and two types of crab meat cakes, pork balls, and beef simmer in a luscious broth cooked with greens. The soup is usually served with a plate of shredded lettuce and perilla leaves. Depending on the restaurant or street vendor, you might also get chilis and nuts added to your bowl. This is comfort food Hai Phong style, a light and delicious meal that will make your taste buds tingle.

Nem Cua Be (Crab Spring Roll)

Nem Cua Be

These square spring rolls are packed with a stuffing of ground crab meat, ground crab tile, lean pork, kohlrabi, carrot, ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, rice paper, vermicelli, and seasonings. The rolls are often served alongside rice vermicelli, lettuce, and chopped cucumber as well as a sweet-spicy-salty-sour dipping sauce. For fans of traditional cylindrical Vietnamese spring rolls ( nem ran ), nem cua be will not disappoint.

Cool Red Jellyfish Salad

Cool Red Jellyfish Salad

Cool red jellyfish salad is the perfect antidote to the hot, sweltering days of Hai Phong’s summers. Red jellyfish is flavored with lemons, kumquats, and other seasonings before being sliced into bite-size chunks with a bamboo knife. The slices are served with grilled tofu, young coconut, mint, perilla, and shrimp paste.

Fish Noodle

Hai Phong Fish Noodle

The fish noodle in Hai Phong combines flavors of the sea with flavors of the countryside. Both saltwater and freshwater fish are used in this soup, including parts of the fish that Westerners usually don’t consider edible: the bladders, stomachs, and heads—all of which impart a unique and delicate flavor to the soup. Vegetables and noodles are added to the broth, making this a satisfying meal in a bowl.

Lau Cua Dong (Freshwater Crab Hotpot)

Lau Cua Dong

Nothing beats a bowl of hot soup in the winter, and lau cua dong is Hai Phong’s remedy for chilly weather. An aromatic bone broth is packed with freshwater crab meat, beef, fried fish, tofu, vegetables and mushrooms before being ladled into large bowls.

Siu Din

Cakes of pounded rice, sesame seeds, peanuts, and coconut are boiled before being placed in a bowl and drenched in a sweet-salty sauce. This popular street food was brought to Hai Phong by Chinese immigrants living in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

Busy Port in Hai Phong

The port city of Hai Phong is a busy, growing city that still retains much of its ancient tradition and culture. Founded by the female general Le Chan in 42 AD, the city mixes ancient temples and pagodas, French colonial buildings, and modern architecture into a glorious blend of old and new. From the Colonial Quarter in the heart of the city to the fresh breezes of Do Son Beach, visitors will never be able to get enough of the food, museums, religious sites, and outdoor wonders that Hai Phong has to offer.

What to do in Hai Phong?

There are numerous amazing things to do here, such as exploring the city’s distinctive buildings, relaxing with islands and oceans, or taking a fantastic gastronomy tour. Some of the more well-known activities are listed below:

Visit City’s Opera House

This Opera House is 120 years old

The City’s Opera House was built in 1904 on the foundation of a historic market in An Bien ancient town and completed in 1912. This work is based on the Paris theater prototype, with construction materials imported from France.

During the French colonial period, the Opera House was a hub of political and cultural events for both French and wealthy indigenous. Only troupes from France or famous troupes from the country can perform here, and only the wealthy can afford to buy tickets. Currently, it is a tourist emblem of the city, located in the center, and serves as a meeting spot for groups of young people in the evening.

See the bridges

Aside from being renowned as “the city of red phoenix flowers,” Hai Phong is also recognized as the city of bridges. They are especially lovely at night. Binh Bridge, which connects the inner city of Hai Phong with Thuy Nguyen district and goes to Quang Ninh, was designed with curves to produce architectural and beautiful shapes.

Crossing the Cam River, the Hoang Van Thu Bridge, with its unique “Sea Bird Wings” architecture, connects Hong Bang and Ngo Quyen districts with Thuy Nguyen district. Hoang Van Thu Bridge is illuminated at night by a system of creative LED lights in a variety of colors. Tourists and locals alike frequently visit to enjoy the breeze and take photographs.

Another bridge worth seeing is the railway bridge, which spans the Tam Bac River. It was built in 1901 by the French. The bridge was built with a center section that can rotate 90 degrees along the riverbank, ensuring that boats do not face any obstructions when crossing the river.

The restored Rao Bridge is the most recent bridge. The bridge’s summit is adorned with three steel red phoenix flowers, the city’s symbol.

Bánh Mỳ Cay

Also known as sandwiches. And no matter what you call it, you can tell a characteristic part of this bread. The reason for the name banh mi is due to the shape of the small, long bread, lying in the palm of the hand and the important thing is the crispness of the bread. Also called spicy bread is due to the characteristic spicy taste of the chili sauce eaten. The basis of the delicious taste of Hai Phong-style spicy bread (or baguettes) is in the way of processing liver pate, bread, and chili sauce.

Bánh Mỳ Cay

Crab spring rolls in Hai Phong style are usually wrapped in a square shape in addition to the popular spring roll package. The raw materials are not much different from spring rolls processed in many regions of the North such as pork, shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, wood ear, bean sprouts,… The difference is the presence of spring rolls. Crab raw materials (a relatively abundant seafood source in Hai Phong waters) and rice cakes produced by traditional local methods. The rolls must be moderately soft, slightly chewy, and not too soft or too soft. In terms of filling, Hai Phong rolls are also very diverse. The fish sauce is simmered for many hours, then seasoned to add flavor to the fish sauce. The sauce served with Ninh Binh elderberry is traditionally made from stir-fry with heart, and goat broth. Meanwhile, the sauce used in seafood scorch is made from seafood ingredients such as shrimp, crab, squid, and tu hai. Therefore, the taste of the two dishes is also different.

To process salt-roasted crabs, in addition to crab and cooking oil, just add seasoning and salt powder. The salt powder is not ground salt, roasted salt, or rock salt, it is a lightly salted rice powder that, when cooked, covers the surface of a loose and loose powder that looks like salt, so if the dish is processed with This powder it is often referred to as salt roasting.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

What to explore, where to stay, what to eat, how to get there.

The northern port city of Hai Phong is home to a well preserved "French Quarter," a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve, beaches, caves and exceptional cuisine.

Hai Phong boasts a subtropical climate typical of northern Vietnam: hot and humid with heavy rains in summer, dry and cold in winter.

The best time to visit the city is from March to April and from September to October when exploration of its historical vestiges can be combined with outdoor enjoyment at the beach and some boat tours.

Between July and August, storms and rains are likely, but that allows visitors to see the place in a completely different light.

In 1888, the president of the French Third Republic, Sadi Carnot, promulgated a decree to establish Hai Phong and began constructing a series of major buildings on a seven-hectare area from Lac Long Bridge to Tran Hung Dao Street as known today.

This history gives the city its major modern history highlight, the "French Quarter" with rows of colonial houses more than a hundred years old.

The Hai Phong Opera House is standout attraction. All the materials to build it were brought from France and its work supervised by French architects.

The Opera House gathered the elite crowd – French officials and rich locals – who could afford tickets to shows featuring famous troupes from France as well as widely recognized local talents.

hai phong city tour

In the main performance hall, the Hai Phong Opera House provides seating for 300 patrons over two floors. Its plush, red cushioned chairs shine the gold trimming. The high domed ceiling adds to its grandeur.

Just a few steps from the Opera House is the Kim Dong Park that has its heart a multi-roofed building built in 1942 by the French. Today it serves as a public library of Hong Bang District.

Hai Phong is also one of the main railway stations in the north of the country, and a train ride from Hanoi to Hai Phong makes for a memorable journey.

The city also boasts the first local museum established in the country and is a must-visit destination for all visitors.

Built in 1919 on a one-hectare area covered with old trees, the museum holds an impressive collection of local historical artefacts that trace the heritage of the region as well as a selection of precious gems, traditional items, and old photographs.

As part of the city tour around the "French Quarter ," a flower market on the eastern side of Tam Bac Lake adds to the city’s considerable charms.

The flower market has five splendid arched-roof kiosks built in 1941 by the French as a place to buy fresh flowers.

Also, within easy walking distance of the lake is a massive bronze statue of the female General Le Chan, a Vietnamese hero and founder of Hai Phong.

The Hang Pagoda in Le Chan District, which is more than 1,000 years old, is one of the most important Buddhist center in the country.

Around 22 kilometers from downtown Hai Phong is the Do Son beach , which is also home to Vietnam’s first legal casino.

What was once a popular resort area for the French is now a popular weekend retreat, especially for sun-seekers from Hanoi.

A cruise tour of this place with its limestone karst mountains rising out of turquoise waters is not to be missed.

<img style=

At the Cai Beo wharf, after buying entry tickets that cost VND30,000 ($1.27) per person, visitors can take a boat or canoe to Lan Ha Bay, located to the east of Cat Ba Island.

Private boat rental price is VND2.2 - 3.8 million for a journey lasting four hours and VND5.7 million for a six-hour-long journey. Each boat can carry up to 25 passengers.

A motorboat cruise costs VND500,000 - 1 million for a group of five to 10 passengers.

Kayaking in Lan Ha Bay includes the thrill of going through the Bright and Dark caves bordering Ha Long Bay.

A trekking trip to the Cat Ba National Park , which was recognized as a world biosphere reserve, is a highly rewarding experience.

The Kim Giao - Ngu Lam trail is the most popular route that takes about an hour to reach the top.

Kim Giao is 300 meters high with rows of stone benches serving as a place to rest before continuing on to Ngu Lam, which is 700 meters further. At the 220-meter high Ngu Lam peak, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountainous landscape from an observation tower. It is also a great lunch spot.

For this two-hour trek, visitors need to bring their own food and water as there are no shops along the route.

As an economic hub of the northern region hosting several international tech giants, Hai Phong has developed a nightlife that finds favourable mention among foreign visitors.

Some popular bars and beer clubs in Hai Phong are Play House Bar, Fleur d'Or Maison Bar, King Disco, Peerage Bar, Lucky Pub and Zozo BBQ Grill Bar.
