Why Mogul Skiers Keep Winning Freeride World Tour Competitions

Former olympic mogul champion justine dufour-lapointe just won her first fwt competition, but it's not likely to be her last..

From bumps to the big mountain, ex-Olympic mogul skier Justine Dufour-Lapointe just proved that skiing’s specific disciplines are mere suggestions. This week, the French-Canadian athlete took first place during the Freeride World Tour’s second stop in Ordino-Arcalis, Andorra, with a run demonstrating superb big mountain technique.

It’s easy for freeride fans to dismiss mogul skiing as an outdated discipline—how can zipper-lining down a perfectly manicured bump run with perfectly angled kickers compare to charging down gnarly, ungroomed mountain faces? But athletes like Dufour-Lapointe highlight how similar the two actually are.

Watch: Justine Dufour-Lapointe Winning Run – FWT23 Ordino Arcalís Pro

Mogul skiing was, after all, the first “freestyle” event ever to grace the Olympics. Similarly, it absorbed a bit of new school flair when Jonny Moseley launched a groundbreaking “dinner roll” —an off-axis spinning flip, known today as a cork 720—during the mogul event at the 2002 Olympics. Yet, the competitive niche has more rules and textbook tendencies than the Freeride World Tour, involving manicured courses, timers, and rigorous judging guidelines.

On the Freeride World Tour, athletes ski off-piste big mountain faces, laying down technical lines and tricks in high-consequence terrain. The “free” in freeride is vital, as there are few rules during Tour events—no clock is ticking, riders can ski down the venue wherever they damn well please, and do whatever tricks they like. As the FWT itself advertises: “ There‘s a start gate at the summit and a finish gate at the bottom. That’s it. Best run-down wins.”

Plunging into this free-for-all competition format could be daunting for someone used to more structure, but to Dufour-Lapointe, her mogul skiing history isn’t a liability, it’s an asset.

“I think mogul skiing is such a strong base that I have,” she said. “It’s not only the technical part, the skiing part, the jump part, but also the experience I’ve gained competing at such a high-stress level.”

And Dufour-Lapointe isn’t just any mogul skier, she’s an Olympic mogul skier. She first won a World Cup title at age 16, eventually grabbing both gold and silver Olympic medals. In addition to her Olympic hardware, Dufour-Lapointe has collected over 40 World Cup podium finishes. When Dufour-Lapointe’s mogul skiing journey ended in 2022 after the Beijing Olympics, she decided it was time for something new. Later that year, she signed up for the Freeride World Tour Qualifier series before receiving a wildcard invite to the Freeride World Tour itself.

“I think for me, I was ready for a new challenge,” she said. “I think that’s something I learned in the past few years that I love to learn, and I love to grow. And that’s what struck me the most and challenged me the most about going into freeride. I felt like I had so much room to grow.”

Dufour-Lapointe’s arrival and ensuing success on the Freeride World Tour probably isn’t surprising to die-hard freeride fans. For years, the Tour’s female category was dominated by pro skier Hedvig Wessel from Norway. What do Wessel and Dufour-Lapointe have in common?

Mogul skiing.

Before Wessel was a freerider, she too was an Olympic mogul skier.  It turns out the combination of bomber fundamentals and freestyle know-how (mogul skiers tend to have killer backflips) lends itself well to competing on the Freeride World Tour. Wessel and Dufour-Lapointe’s success indicates that the Tour, like moguls, is a total skiing litmus test—to win, an athlete needs to fire on all cylinders, from tricks to technique.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Justine Dufour-Lapointe (@justinedufourlapointe)

Winning one stop was originally the only item on Dufour-Lapointe’s Freeride World Tour bucket list. Now that she’s ticked that one off, she’s focused on larger goals.

“My next goal is for sure to do the whole season, which is to qualify myself for the final like Fieberbrunn and Verbier,” said Dufour-Lapointe. “Right now, I’m second in the world. But I need another good result to get there.”

And if the Tour’s second stop at Ordino-Arcalís is any indication, Dufour-Lapointe can’t rest on her laurels. Athletes are throwing enormous cork 720s, somewhat reckless cliff drops, and heavy straight-lines in both the men’s and women’s categories, making fans wonder: How much bigger can, or will, these riders go for their shot at the podium?

The 2023 FWT next stops in Kicking Horse, B.C., between Feb. 17-22. After this third stop, only the top riders from each category will move onto the final two stops in Fieberbrunn, Austria and Verbier, Switzerland.

Off the mogul piste and into backcountry terrain: How Olympic champion Justine Dufour-Lapointe reinvented herself and found new freedom on skis

The Canadian mogul ace joined the Freeride World Tour last season as a wildcard and finished it as a world champion. Her recipe for success? Three cycles of Olympic discipline, a pinch of gratitude, and an insatiable hunger for freedom.

Justine Dufour-Lapointe is an Olympic mogul champion, world mogul champion and freeride world champion.

After three Olympic Games as a mogul skier – including two Olympic medals – Justine Dufour-Lapointe was looking for a new challenge.

So, she heaved on a backpack, strapped on some thick skis and went out into the unchartered mountain territory of freeriding.

Being an Olympic champion, however, simply shredding through the snow-covered mountains was not enough for the 29-year-old Canadian. To make her first year of freeriding more memorable, she entered the Freeride World Tour as a wildcard .

Three months later, she was crowned freeride world champion .

"For me, the switch was to do something new, to reinvent myself," Dufour-Lapointe told Olympics.com. "After three cycles of the Olympic Games I felt like I needed to do something to change it up a little bit and I think that freeride was the exact sport that I needed to feel this freedom and to really experience what it's like to ski in mountains.

"The switch was just to fall back in love with being a skier and skiing for fun out there."

Justine Dufour-Lapointe's journey from moguls to freeride

A mogul piste is one of the most groomed courses on the winter sports circuit. Line measures map out the exact locations for the landings and bumps, CAT groomers and shovels are on hand to make the sides perfectly symmetrical.

The fresh powder and unpredictable track of the freeride ski world is quite different terrain.

"It's a total different sport ," Dufour-Lapointe explained about the contrast between moguls and freeride. "You need to read the mountain, you don't have the training beforehand. It's a sport of trying to take the best decision out there with the snow condition. So it's really another technique, having fat skis, longer skis, having a backpack. It's really different."

The backcountry landscape and different equipment are not the only things that the Sochi 2014 Olympic champion, PyeongChang 2018 silver medallist and four-time world medallist had to get used to since switching sports.

Having taken up mogul skiing at age eight in the footsteps of her two older sisters, Sochi 2014 Olympian Maxime and Sochi 2014 silver medallist Chloe , Dufour-Lapointe has spent most of her sports life surrounded by teammates and coaches with similar passion and goals.

That is not the case on the Freeride World Tour , where most athletes don't have a national federation to rely on.

"In mogul you are in a team, you have an association, your surrounding. You have so many people helping you out - coach, staff member, sport psych. But when you come to a sport where it's still not an organised sport that much, with an association and team, you feel so much alone," Justine Dufour-Lapointe said.

"That was really hard at first, to have to build my own team and create my safe space, and to reach out to find some help and to reach out for finding a coach, finding myself people who can help me rise and be able to attain my goal."

While Dufour-Lapointe's team has been scaled down significantly since leaving Freestyle Canada, she said she can count on at least two former teammates to never miss any of her races and always send her a 'good luck' note - her two sisters.

Maxime Dufour-Lapointe retired from mogul skiing in 2018 and is now attending medical school, while Chloe stepped away from the sport after Beijing 2022 and is studying business of fashion.

From wild card to champion: How Justine Dufour-Lapointe excelled in freeride

Despite the many differences between mogul skiing and freeride, Dufour-Lapointe proved that her champion status has no bounds.

Entering the Freeride World Tour as a wildcard, it took the Olympic mogul champion only two races to top the podium . She was victorious during the second tour stage at Ordino Arcalis Pro in Andorra in February 2023, and repeated her winning ways in the March stage at Fieberbrunn Pro, Austria.

When the last event of the season, in Verbier, Switzerland, was cancelled, Dufour-Lapointe experienced the familiar sensation of being called up to claim the top prize.

"It was incredible," Dufour-Lapointe said of winning the world title in her first season on tour. " I had no intention of winning . I wanted to perform well, I wanted to give it all and give my best, but I never thought I would be so successful over only one year. It was beyond my expectation."

Dufour-Lapointe credited her background in moguls as a big part of her success on the Freeride World Tour.

"Having so much technique behind me in my career and having jumped so many times backflips, doing tricks every day and skiing hard, icy bumps, after that, everything was actually kind of easy to ski," she said.

"I was ready in my career to take on that type of challenge of switching sport completely at 28 years old. It was not easy but I think I had enough courage to do it."

The freeride world title was also a redemption of sorts for the Canadian skier whos finished off the podium in her last three major competitions, including a heartbreaking 20th place at her third Olympic Games.

Dufour-Lapointe advanced to the final at  Beijing 2022 , but a crash in the second section of the course obliterated all chances of a good placement.

Determined to finish on her own terms, she got up from the fall, recovered her ski pole and hiked up the course before skiing to the finish line.

"Beijing Olympic Games, even though it's still a really hard image to look at, it was something that it was meant to happen to me in some way," she said. "It was an experience that I never lived before to be in front of the whole world and have a crash at the worst moment it could ever happen and I think I learned so much through it and I grew a lot from it as well. I don't define myself anymore about the result but way more about how you tackle challenge in your life."

"It's not the way you crash, but it's the way you get up that people remember. That was a big lesson that I learned from Beijing," Justine Dufour-Lapointe to Olympics.com

Freeriding: A sport for champions and dreamers

With a freeride world title already under her name – the second Canadian skier to finish on the overall Freeride World Tour podium after Olivia McNeill who finished third in 2022 – Dufour-Lapointe is not feeling any jitters about the season ahead, only excitement and gratitude.

"The key for me this season was to focus on the process of learning something new and having fun and that's now my main goal again, to keep it that way, keep it simple, keep it light ," Dufour-Lapointe said. "At the end of the day, we're not saving lives, we're just skiing. And when you're skiing, the only way to properly do it is for you, and ski with passion and excitement and joy.

"That's my main goal after so many years of intense mogul skiing, going to Olympics, a lot of pressure. I feel like the only thing that I want is that freedom of expressing myself out there without any pressure because I'm doing the Freeride World Tour for me and nothing else. It's just for fun, and it's the cherry on top of the sundae to be there and to be skiing the most beautiful mountains in the world."

The 2024 Freeride World Tour season runs from late January to March with six stops on the calendar.

If you're not ready yet to follow Dufour-Lapointe off the beaten path, start by tuning in to the races - and scaling up your dreams.

"What must excite people about freeride is that it's just skiing into nature. Everybody can see themselves skiing around trees or skiing a little powder patch that we all find when we're skiing in a resort," Dufour-Lapointe said. "It's a sport that everyone can dream to do like skiing over and going up with heli-skiing. It's so cool to see and so impressive. The scenery is really breathtaking, but also it's an extreme sport with avalanche, rocks. It's a lot of danger.

"And the way it's judged, it's really simple. It's really how the spectator watched it. If they were thrilled and excited all the way through that means it's going to be a high point. So the more you jump, the more you hit good jumps and you land and you keep going as fast as you can, the more points you get. It's simple and easy for people to watch it and to dream about it as well."

Justine Dufour-Lapointe joins Freeride World Tour

freeride world tour justine dufour lapointe

The Freeride World Tour has announced Justine Dufour-Lapointe as a season wildcard in the ski women’s category. The three-time Olympian and two-time medallist is the most decorated athlete to join the FWT roster for the entire season and therefore she will be able to bring a wealth of competitive experience to the Tour, which will prove vital as she sets her sights on the FWT crown.

Justine hails from Quebec and is the first Quebecer female athlete to compete on the FWT. She started mogul skiing at eight years of age, before turning her attention toward competition in her teenage years. It didn’t take long for her to make international headlines, finishing second in the FIS World Cup moguls in 2012, at just 17. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, she became the youngest freestyle skiing champion ever at the Winter Games, winning gold in the moguls alongside her sister Chloé in second place. Four years later, at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, she secured another medal, this time a silver in the same event. Together with her Olympic success, she has over 40 FIS World Cup podium finishes and multiple medals in the World Championships, making her one of the most decorated Canadian skiers of all time.

freeride world tour justine dufour lapointe

Justine has now retired from mogul skiing to focus on freeriding. She spent the winter in the Southern Hemisphere training in New Zealand and competing in FWT Qualifier events, narrowly missing out on a podium in a strong field at the 2023 The North Face Frontier, presented by Winter Games NZ 4*. Can she convert her extensive mogul skiing experience into FWT success, and add some more silverware to her trophy collection?

“I’m feeling super excited and so proud to join this amazing community and family that is the FWT. I can’t wait to connect with the mountain like never before, and I am thrilled to start this new adventure and grow into an even better skier. My number one priority is to enjoy myself while skiing!” – Justine Dufour Lapointe, FWT Competitor

This week it was announced that he Freeride World Tour is making a milestone in its history thanks to the merger with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, which is acquiring FWT properties . Justine will be be with new and old family!

Best wishes on the tour Justine, we’ll be watching you!

Justine Dufour-Lapointe leaves freestyle skiing for Freeride tour

"After three Olympic cycles and 12 incredible years on the World Cup circuit in moguls, I felt a need for new challenges," Montrealer says.

Double Olympic medallist Justine Dufour-Lapointe, who has been considering her future for several months, has finally decided to leave the rigid structure of freestyle skiing for the more permissive one of “freeride.”

Justine Dufour-Lapointe leaves freestyle skiing for Freeride tour Back to video

The Montreal native said she made the decision after observing promotional content from the sport on various platforms.

“There was a moment — I’m not sure when — that I had this idea, telling myself: ‘Hey, Freeride looks really cool’,” she said in an interview with La Presse Canadienne. “I saw content on social media and I really liked the fact that there was freedom of expression, that it was a different sport. Plus, they used the same skills as those I had in moguls.”

So she announced Tuesday morning that she would continue her career on the Freeride World Tour, becoming the first Quebecer — and first Olympian — to join the circuit founded in Switzerland in 1996.

“After three Olympic cycles and 12 incredible years on the World Cup circuit in moguls, I felt a need for new challenges,” she said in a video posted to her Instagram. “I felt that my career was not finished and I still had a fire that burned in me.”

Dufour-Lapointe won the gold medal in women’s moguls at the Sochi Olympics in 2014, and the silver at Pyeongchang in 2018. Her older sisters Chloé and Maxime have already retired from competitive freestyle skiing.

The principle of “freeride” is simple: There’s no clock, no fabricated jumps or even trails. There’s a start and a finish, and the descents are done in a natural environment where athletes are at the mercy of all the elements, from rocks to trees to crevasses. Athletes are also not allowed to ski on the face of the mountain before competition, and can only analyze the course using binoculars.

Participants are judged for the quality of their descent and given a score between zero and 100. The jury is composed of four judges who grade based on five judging criteria: the difficulty and choice of line, control, fluidity, jumps and technique.

“I can have freedom in a completely new environment,” Dufour-Lapointe said. “I’m eager to improve myself in a new discipline and connect with the mountain in a new way. I’m jumping into this new challenge to find the adrenalin that I always had for skiing and get out of my comfort zone. I want to make my own path and leave my mark.”

She spent the past few days in the French Alps, but her training in freeride started long before that.

“People didn’t really notice, but I’ve already done training camps in Colorado and in New Zealand this summer,” she said. “It was to see and experiment in freeride, to be certain that when I made my decision, I was 100 per cent sure. And when I tried it the first time, with the danger, the reading of the course and everything … I realized that what I loved was the freedom.”

The door isn’t completely closed on freestyle skiing, she said, noting the first stop of the World Cup tour in Ruka, Finland, last weekend was the first time in more than a decade that none of the Dufour-Lapointe sisters were at the starting line.

“I think it was impossible for me to not watch that competition,” said the winner of 15 World Cup titles among 49 podium finishes.

She will need to find new sponsors to finance her freeride career, as she will no longer get Canadian government subsidies.

“I’m leaving with partners that have believed in me for several years. But I’m also searching for new sponsors, because it’s a sport that is completely separate, that isn’t financed by the government. I have to pay to travel, for lodging, food, and since I’m starting I need some help, coaching, people to support me. It’s a golden opportunity, and I think it’s a great chance to develop a market in a sport that isn’t well-known in Quebec, but very popular in Europe. It’s even televised in some countries.”

The 28-year-old will begin this new chapter of her career in Kicking Horse, B.C., Jan. 13-18. The FWT season has five stops in total, with the last one in Verbier, Switzerland, March 25 to April 2.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

2024 YETI Xtreme Verbier

The world’s best freeriders delivered a masterclass today at the YETI Xtreme Verbier, wrapping up an unforgettable FWT by Peak Performance season. Ski and Snowboard Men dropped from the top of the Bec des Rosses for the first time since 2018, providing a leg-burning 600-meter elevation drop, which is littered with a maze of technical features and serious cliff bands. Consistent powder lined the face – offering near-perfect snow conditions – but some high clouds hindered visibility at times. That didn’t stop the world’s best freeriders from lighting up Verbier, delivering memorable performances in the final event on the 2024 FWT calendar

You have voted for Marcus Goguen as the 2024 YETI Xtreme Verbier Rider of the Day by Peak Performance! Making it his third Rider of the Day award of the 2024 season.

1 -  Marcus Goguen  - 23.1% 2 -  Manon Loschi  - 12.1% 3 -  Max Hitzig  - 11.4%

Marcus Goguen got ultra technical and creative today to take the Verbier title, skiing through extreme exposure and looking like a veteran on the face. He stomped his first 360 with little hesitation before opening up a brand-new line on the Bec des Rosses, sending arguably the biggest triple air in freeride history. Will this now be called the Marcus Goguen triple?
