Rick Springfield and Richard Marx reveal the songs they wish they’d written

It's been nearly 45 years since Rick Springfield released his chart-topping hit "Jessie's Girl," and the rocker still brings down the house whenever he plays the iconic song .

"I'm very proud of having written it. It's a gift that it's gone where it's gone, too," Springfield tells TODAY.com during a sit-down interview.

And, despite having performed the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song hundreds (if not thousands) of times, the singer-songwriter says he still gets a thrill every time he plays it.

"That one, it's like, 'Yeah, let's party, let's share this,'" says Springfield.

It's "Jessie's Girl" that put the Australian-born musician on the map, as well as the radar of millions of women who simultaneously watched him as Dr. Noah Drake on the daytime soap opera "General Hospital."

The perfect storm of exposure catapulted Springfield into global fame, earning him the distinction of being a bona fide heartthrob in the 1980s, throughout which he released a string of successful albums including "Working Class Dog," "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" and "Hard to Hold."

Now, at 74, he's still out on the road, playing to eager audiences, and says it's unlikely he'll ever stop.

"I always say if I retired, I'd probably just get a band together and hit the road," Springfield says with a laugh.

Over the past several years, he's been joined onstage by fellow musician and friend Richard Marx for a series of acoustic concerts in which the pair play their hits.

Rick Springfield and Richard Marx in concert in 2017.

A pop sensation in his own right, Marx went to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 in the '80s and '90s with songs like "Hold on to the Nights," "Right Here Waiting" and "Satisfied," along with many others.

Marx, who joined Springfield in talking to TODAY.com, says the music collaboration is a fulfilling one and that their two-man show is as much about their back-and-forth banter as it is about music.

"The bits in between the songs is the show," Marx explains. "We're both really grateful to have a catalog of songs to play and we deliver that musically solid, but it's the stuff in between the songs ..."

"That's the fun," finishes Springfield.

The pair met backstage during one of Marx's shows in 1988 and, after becoming fast friends, have remained close since. When they're together, they say they can't help but goof around.

"We crack each other up, which happens every show, where (there's) something that's completely unplanned or just stupid," Marx tells TODAY.com.

When they aren't performing together, Marx and Springfield each tour separately with their impressive list of No. 1's. When asked how being on the road is different now than it was a decade or two ago, Marx says that over time, he's gained a deeper appreciation of the audience.

"The pure joy of walking offstage, knowing that everybody had a great time and that connection, that's precious to me," says Marx.

Rick Springfield performs at his Las Vegas residency in 2023.

For Springfield, it goes deeper, saying that in his early days of success, fame got to his head. "When you're young, your ego kind of does take over," he explains. Those days, however, are long behind him. "Now it's like, 'Hey! We're still alive and doing this. How cool is that?'" says Springfield.

Springfield also says that like Marx, he's come to realize over the years that it's not so much about him but rather the audience.

"It's about them. Because if they weren't there, you'd still be recording your demos and sticking them on your shelf and have nothing," he says.

Stranded on a desert island with only one record?

Both musicians say that even after all this time, they haven't grown tired of performing their hit songs, in part because they're the ones who penned them.

"When I look down at the setlist, I'm like, 'Oh, yeah, I love that one' or, 'I can't wait (to play that one),'" says Marx. "I wrote all those songs, (Rick) wrote all his songs. When I've heard about people saying, 'I'm so sick of playing that song,' it's never a song that they wrote."

As far as songs they've haven't written go, there are a few that Marx and Springfield say they wish they had.

Among them? "Red Rain," by Peter Gabriel, says Marx.

Springfield agrees, calling Gabriel his "favorite" all-around artist. A Beatles fan at heart, Springfield also says he wishes he'd penned "every great song the Beatles ever wrote," as well as the Kinks classic "You Really Got Me," a song that led him to break the law in order to own it when he was a kid.

"I remember being 12 years old and I actually stole that single because I couldn't afford to buy it. So, I went and stuck it under my jacket and walked out with it," says Springfield.

It's still a tune he says gives him chills when he hears it. "That was suddenly rock and roll and it blew my mind."

If he were stranded on a desert island with only one record to play for the rest of all time, Marx says he'd choose the classic Earth, Wind & Fire album "I Am."

And, on brand, Springfield would pick the Beatles' "Revolver."

The road to 'world domination'

After more than four successful decades in the business, the two musicians reflect on what remains unfinished in their respective lives.

"I feel like I checked so many of the wish list, bucket list stuff off over the years that I'm not motivated by that," says Marx, who's been married to actor and fashion magnate Daisy Fuentes since 2015. Instead, keenly aware of "the clock ticking," he wants to simply enjoy life.

Daisy Fuentes and Richard Marx in 2018.

"More outside-of-my-comfort-zone experiences, learning new stuff," he says, explaining that even though he's pretty good at making the most out of living, he "could be better at that."

Next up for Springfield? "World domination," the musician jokes before getting serious and saying that fully embracing life is what matters the most to him.

Candid about his struggle with depression through the years, Springfield says that it's the condition that likely led to his fame.

"That's what gave me my drive initially, that pulled me from a little farm town in Australia to come over here and try my luck," he says.

But despite his success, Springfield says that fighting the "big critic in my head" remains a challenge. "It's like anything, it's part of an upside and downside to everything. A lot of the ideas for my songs came from me being depressed and trying to figure out why."

Rick Springfield Portrait Session

Through meditation and other supports, including his longtime wife, Barbara Porter, Springfield says he's been successful, to some degree, in combating his demons. And though he still feels like he's still got unfinished business, he tempers it with being grateful for what he's got.

"My favorite thing is just to sit at home with my wife and our dog, having had our kids over for dinner and writing," he says.

Because, when it comes down to it, Springfield says that's what he and Marx are at their core: writers.

"That's the most joy I have, when I really feel something has come through and I've gone, 'Wow, I think I might have nailed that.'"

The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer said, in the July 15 announcement, “I’ve had such an amazing opportunity in my songwriting career to write all kinds of songs with, and for, all kinds of artists. He has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, starting with his self-titled debut which went to #8 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and spawned four Top 5 hits, including “Hold on to the Nights” and “Don’t Mean Nothing,” which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and #1 spot on the rock chart. Marx’s follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender , furthered his early success, hitting #1 and going quadruple-platinum with two #1 singles, “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.”

He went on to earn a 2004 Song of the Year Grammy for co-authoring Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.” Overall, he has scored 14 No. 1 singles (including Urban’s “Long Hot Summer,”) both as a performer and as a songwriter/producer.

Why Richard Marx Is Finally Celebrating After Four Decades of Hits

As Richard Marx gears up for the Feb. 7 release of his 12th album Limitless , his first new recording under a deal signed with BMG earlier this year, the veteran singer/songwriter says if he could go back to the beginning of his career, there is some advice he’d impart to his younger self.

“The one thing I would say is ‘enjoy it more’ because I didn’t celebrate. I never celebrated until maybe five years ago,” says the Chicago native, known for such No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits as “Hold On to the Nights,” “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.”

Marx credits his wife of nearly four years, Daisy Fuentes, with encouraging him to celebrate his success. “She specifically asked me, ‘When Repeat Offender went to No. 1 [on the Billboard 200 ], what did you do? How did you celebrate?'” he says referencing his hugely successful 1989 sophomore album. BMG celebrated the album’s 30th anniversary this year with the release Repeat Offender Revisited , which includes newly recorded studio, live and acoustic versions of songs from the landmark album.

Marx admitted to his wife that when hits like “Satisfied,” “Angelia” and “Right Here Waiting” sailed up the charts, he didn’t stop to celebrate. He continued working. “I think I was afraid of jinxing it. I was afraid of embracing how great it was for a lot of different reasons and I didn’t celebrate all the incredible things that happened to me when they were happening,” he says. “So I would say when great things happen, take a minute, day or week and celebrate it. Be 100% in it and really feel it. I didn’t let myself do that at all. I’ve written 14 No. 1 songs — which I’m so grateful for — on different charts, so I looked up the dates of those 14 songs that went to No. 1 and every year we have a dinner. I acknowledge it — every single year, 14 days a year. Actually, the two Keith Urban No. 1s [2005’s “Better Life” and 2011’s “Long Hot Summer”] were on the same day [Oct. 22], just different years, which is so weird, but we have celebrations every date that a song of mine went to No. 1. I just do it retroactively.”

Looking back over his chart-topping, Grammy-winning career, Marx has a lot to celebrate, but that doesn’t mean he’s resting on his considerable laurels. He’s excited about Limitless,  and he should be: it successfully navigates the tricky line between familiar and fresh, managing to sound enough like classic Marx to satisfy longtime fans yet also inventive enough to attract new ones.

He attributes that in large part to an appetite for listening to all kinds of music and also collaborating with partners that challenged him creatively, including his son Lucas, Sara Bareilles, Morgan Page, Vertical Horizon frontman Matt Scannell, Lifehouse’s Jason Wade and his wife Daisy.

Marx says his approach to the new record was “collaborating when it felt right,” and he encourages other veteran acts to seek out new creative partners. “There are definitely songs that I wrote by myself that still feel pretty fresh because I listen constantly,” he says, citing Tove Lo, Post Malone, Halsey, Ed Sheeran, Lady Antebellum and Dan + Shay among those whose work he admires. “I’m listening to radio and I think it’s really important to let current and new music influence you, but I also think at this stage of my career — and any career that has lasted this long — if you don’t really embrace other people’s talent and see how they can benefit you creatively then you’ve got your head in the sand.

“There are artists that I really love who still make albums,” he continues, “and every time they put out an album I get more disappointed because it just sounds like a bad version of what they did 20 years ago and then I’ll look at the credits and see they didn’t work with anybody new, so to me it comes down to reaching out to new collaborators and being open to new stuff, including my own son. Lucas is an incredible talent and I’d be a fool not to ask him to help me out.”

Marx and his son co-wrote “All Along” and “Another One Down,” which is the album’s lead single and has climbed to No. 14 on the Adult Contemporary chart (Oct. 19), becoming his highest-peaking non-holiday hit on the chart since 1997.

Marx has three sons with his ex-wife actress Cynthia Rhodes: Brandon, 29, Lucas, 27 and Jesse, 25. “I’m close to all three of them and they are all incredibly talented,” he says proudly, “but Lucas, I think, is the most aligned with me musically and creatively. My oldest son Brandon is brilliant and an incredible singer, but he’s totally into electronic and mostly hip-hop. As much as I appreciate that, I don’t feel a kinship to a lot of the music that he’s making. I really respect it, but we’re just kind of in different worlds. Then my youngest son Jesse and I have written a little bit together but he’s like serious hardcore rock. He makes [metal band] Lamb of God sound like me. Lucas is that sort of straight-ahead pop/R&B and is super melodic. He was playing me stuff for the last two years because he’s really prolific and every time he’d play me a new song I’d go, ‘F—! This is so good.'”

Marx said when he and Lucas sat down to write, they knocked out “Another One Down” in about an hour. “I couldn’t believe how effortless it was to write and the next thing I knew he was sitting at his computer creating the track,” Marx recalls. “It was really cool for me to have him produce me. I made some suggestions. I changed a few things, but mostly he had a real good vision for it. When the track was done, I went up to the microphone and said, ‘Tell me what to do,’ and he beat me up a few times pretty hard. There were times he’d go, ‘No! No! You can’t sing it like that. You sound 100 years old,’ and so I said, ‘Okay sing it for me’ and he would sort of line-read me, like you would an actor. I learned a lot from it and I know he learned from it. Then to have the single get on the charts and nearly get into the top 10 on the AC chart, he’d never had a song on the charts before. He said, ‘To have my first song on the charts with you is insane. It’s so cool.’ So it was a real special thing.”

Marx co-wrote the poignant ballad “Not in Love” with Bareilles. “That’s a song that I had had for a year or two and I just wasn’t sure if it was finished,” he says. “I knew that there was something special about it, but I just couldn’t quite crack the code to finish it to my liking and then Sara and I got together to write. She came up with most of that last verse lyrically. I just remember breathing a sigh of relief and going, ‘Now it’s finished.’ I love her. I’m a huge fan so I love that we have something together that’s coming out.”

Meanwhile, “Strong Enough” was penned with Lifehouse’s Jason Wade and features vocals by actress/singer Jana Kramer. “I wrote that song with Jason Wade, who I love. He lives in Nashville now, but we wrote that song when he was living in L.A. a couple years ago,” Marx recalls. “We did a really nice tracking together at his studio and when I was singing it, one of us said — I can’t remember who said — ‘You know this would be a really nice duet.’ I reached out to Jana’s management and she loved the song. So we just got together in a studio in L.A. a couple weeks later and knocked it out.”

“Let Go” is another track Marx is particularly excited for fans to hear. “I love that song. That began as a collaboration with Morgan Page, who is a DJ/songwriter/musician that I’m a big fan of,” he shares. “I said, ‘I’m going to take this home for a couple of days and just ruminate on it’ because there were no lyrics when we wrote the track. I was dating Daisy and we had written the title for my last album, [2014’s] Beautiful Goodbye . It was really the first time she ever tried to write a song and it just turned out she’s a really good lyricist. It’s not that she doesn’t follow the rules of songwriter. She doesn’t know them. She never knew them. She doesn’t adhere to any limitations. I get all ‘songwritery’ in my head sometimes [saying] ‘You can’t rhyme that with that’ or ‘You can’t say it that way. It has to be more poetic’ and then Daisy would go, ‘Why can’t you say it? Just say it.’ So I brought her this song and as soon as we sat down, we knew exactly what we wanted to write.”

Marx describes the song as being about detachment, but in a positive sense of the word. “I was buttoned up pretty tight for most of my life and actually deluded myself in thinking I had some control,” he says. “Once you realize you don’t, and you really just do let go, then all of a sudden all this good stuff starts to happen.”

Marx will be sharing his hits and introducing songs from Limitless as he winds down his current tour and gears up for a busy slate of dates in 2020. During his lengthy career, he’s penned songs for a variety of artists from Kenny Rogers to Luther Vandross, and Marx holds the distinction of having written songs that have hit No. 1 on various Billboard charts in each of the last four decades (1980s-2010s), as well as being the only male soloist in history whose first seven Hot 100 entries each reached the top five.

Marx is enjoying this season of his life and seems relaxed and happy. “What I finally learned to do in the last few years is embrace the gift that I have of not having to do anything I don’t want to do — to be at a place in my career and life where if I make an album, it’s simply because I felt like making an album. If you see me on a stage, it’s because I want to be there. That’s a really amazing blessing to be at a place in your life to feel like that,” he says. “That’s why the album is so sort of schizophrenic in terms of style. There were times when I was like how can I put ‘Limitless’ on the same album as ‘Front Row Seat’ or how can I put ‘Let Go’ on the same album as ‘This One.’ They sound like totally different albums and then I was like, but it’s all me and I reminded myself that I can do whatever I want.

“I’m at a place where it’s all about doing stuff that matters to me, that I enjoy,” he continues. “If this album is even remotely successful that would be great, but that’s not why I did it. It’s already successful to me because I really love the album. I’m really proud of it and that’s enough. That’s what it should really be about. I learned to just do what moves you. It’s a beautiful place to be.”

PASO ROBLES, Calif. – March 26, 2024 – Rick Springfield and Richard Marx have expanded their co-headlining 2024 Acoustic Tour to include a performance at Vina Robles Amphitheatre, Sunday, August 11 . The concert will feature intimate solo acoustic performances and full sets from each artist.

Tickets are available via Ticketmaster , Friday, March 29, at 10AM .

Over the past four decades, Rick Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and performer. The creator of some of the finest power-pop of the ’80s, a Grammy winning singer, songwriter, and musician who has sold 25 million albums and scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair of the Heart,” "I've Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody,” and “Human Touch.” He’s an accomplished actor who has starred opposite Meryl Streep in the feature film “Ricki and the Flash,” gave a chameleonic performance as the creepy Dr. Irving Pitlor in HBO’s prestige drama “True Detective,” earned great reviews for his portrayal of Lucifer on the CW hit “Supernatural” and most recently played the insane Pastor Charles on FX’s worldwide hit series “American Horror Story.” An author as well, both his candid 2010 memoir Late, Late at Night (which Rolling Stone named one of the 25 greatest rock memoirs of all time) and his 2014 comedic novel Magnificent Vibration earned rave reviews and spots on the New York Times Best Sellers’ list. In 2014, Springfield was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located around the corner from the first apartment he lived in when he first arrived in the U.S. from Australia in 1971. Springfield’s Sirius-XM radio show, Working Class DJ, is a huge hit and airs weekly on 80s on 8. His new album Automatic , is his first album of all new original material in five years.

In his four decades as a songwriter Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, starting with his self-titled debut which went to No. 8 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. He has since made history as the only male artist whose first seven singles reached the Top 5 on the Billboard charts. Richard has also written on a No. 1 single in each of the last four decades, an accolade previously only reached by Michael Jackson. Overall, he has scored 14 No. 1 singles both as a performer and as a songwriter/producer, revealing him a true multitalented performer who continues to challenge himself and his fans. In addition to being a musician, Richard is a committed philanthropist, supporting charitable causes like the American Cancer Society and the Ronald McDonald House Charities, Mercy For Animals, ASPCA, Humane Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the charity closest to Richard’s heart, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, for which his produced events have raised over $4 million for research.

In 2022, Marx released his unique and ambitious album, simply and appropriately titled Songwriter, consisting of 20 tracks crossing four different genres, pop, live rock, country and ballads. Made mainly of collaborations with various music superstars such as Keith Urban, Darius Rucker, David Hodges, Matt Scannell, Chris Daughtry, Jason Wade and the legendary Burt Bacharach. The legacy of his career as a songwriter, singer and musician and now author is now well established and Richard is happy to continue on his trajectory, wherever it takes him.

With beloved songs like "Hold On To The Nights" and "Right Here Waiting", Richard Marx has left his mark on music. For most artists, that would be impressive enough - but Marx didn't stop there. He's written #1 singles over the last four decades for artists like Celine Dion and Chicago. His latest album, Songwriter, is filled with different musical genres, showing that Marx can make anything his own.
