How to get to Athens

If you’re flying into Athens, you’ll most likely be landing at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH). You can find taxis outside of the arrivals terminal, and the fare into town should cost around 35 EUR.

You can also take the suburban train (Proastiakos) from the airport into Athens. The train leaves every 15 minutes, and takes about 45 minutes to reach central Athens. Tickets cost 8 EUR per person. Thessaloniki and Macedonia

As an alternative to Athens, touch down in Thessaloniki. The city exudes youthful energy and boasts an explosive culinary scene. Before you hit the road, pop into the cool and cozy Souel Wine Concept Bar at 16 Pavlou Mela Street (no reservations) and try something from sisters Eleni and Tania’s 250-bottle collection, 30 of which they offer by the glass!

West of Thessaloniki in Central Macedonia, Naoussa is known for Xinomavro , a red wine grape that seems to be on everyone’s lips lately. Connoisseurs liken it to Italy’s famed Nebbiolo variety for its potential to age and expansive aromas—everything from ripe raspberries and tobacco to vine tomatoes, olives, and dried fruit. A bit further west, Afrodite Stergiou’s boutique family winery lies nestled in the hillsides overlooking Lake Orestiada, in Kastoria, a city of Como-like splendor and deserving of a day trip. When not on the winery, you’ll find seasoned sommelier Afrodite ninety minutes southeast of Thessaloniki on the Sithonia Peninsula, at award-winning Danai Beach Resort where she guides guests through a 1,700-bottle wine list. 

Thirty minutes down the western coastline of Sithonia, Eyfrossyni Drossou oversees production at landmark Domaine Porto Carras , a model of regenerative agriculture and organic farming. Vineyards blanket the hillsides of Mount Meliton in amphitheater formation to maximize the cooling effect of the lagoon. Together with viticulturalist Haroula Spinthiropoulou, Drossou balances nature and nurture to create wines full of local and varietal character. From Heraklion, hit the road to Peza, the heart of Cretan wine making and home to Emmanuela and Niko, whose winery, Domaine Paterianakis put Crete on the map as pioneers of organic and natural winemaking. Up the coast in Chania, book a table at Oinoa , where sommelier Theodosia serves exclusively Greek wines with an emphasis on indigenous varieties, and her best friend Maria designs expert food pairings.

While for the last decade Athens has been struggling with the impact of the ongoing economic crisis, which has also brought up some big questions regarding Greece’s self-identity and the country’s place within Europe, the hard times have also helped spark a process of rediscovery, with Greeks taking a new look at their own identity, their own resources and – most importantly from our perspective – their own culinary traditions and heritage.

By publishing the stories of our local heroes, visiting them on culinary tours, or directly fundraising for them when they are in need, we attempt to honor their work and their essential role in maintaining the fabric of the city. Our purpose is twofold. Yes, we want to get travelers to some good places to eat. But we also want to make sure that some of these spots and the artisans making food there find a new audience and get the recognition and support they deserve. They are holding back the tide of globalized sameness, which is not easy work – even if it’s done unknowingly. But we believe that every meal counts and, with the help of our audience, they will add up. We are committed to their perseverance and hope that our modest efforts encourage them to keep at it. Our work is also guided by a belief in: Honest Tourism: The places where we eat and craftsmen that we feature on our culinary tours are all selected with this purpose in mind. We’d never accept a free lunch or consider a discount for our tour groups, because that would contradict our central goal, to support them. Nor do our guides receive any commissions from shopkeepers. Honest Journalism: The same principal is applied to the publishing of stories. There are no sponsored posts or even advertising on CB. The writers and photographers are paid fairly for their work on stories that we all believe in.

The cities we are drawn to all have a culinary tradition of untold richness as well as a certain tension, be it political instability, the tug between East and West, the clash between modern and ancient identities, migration, rapid gentrification, bankruptcy, or a post-colonial hangover. Our decision to get started in a city is always the result of a trip filled with many meals where we are given in intimate view of that tension, right there on the table. By getting lost in this warren of independent food purveyors struggling to preserve or adapt tradition in fast-paced urban life, we start to discover the deep complexity and true flavor of the city. At present, you’ll find our regular dispatches from Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Marseille, Mexico City, Naples, Porto, Queens (NY), Shanghai, Tbilisi and Tokyo.

• Reducing group size: Our small group tours just got smaller. During the initial reopening period, tours will be private at no additional charge. That means that the tour will only be you, your travel companions and your Culinary Backstreets guide.
• Disinfection: Our guides carry hand sanitizer and provide it to guests frequently while also encouraging them to wash hands whenever a sink is available. Our guides also carry disinfecting wipes to clean surfaces during the tour or trip.
• Maintaining social distancing requirements: Our guides maintain social distancing during tours and trips, according to regulations issued by local health authorities.
• Wearing masks: Our guides and guests wear masks wherever required by local regulations. We request that guests come to the tour with their own mask, although our guides will provide masks to those who do not have one.
• Visiting restaurants safely: Our tours and trips only visit restaurants and shops that are adhering to official safety standards and regulations and, where applicable, have been certified as such. We also avoid visiting restaurants during peak times so that they are less crowded and in order to not displace hungry locals. In restaurants and shops, our guides make sure that guests adhere to the establishments’ social distancing rules and ascertain whether the rules are being followed by other diners.
• Tasting food safely: Our guides make sure that food is sampled and distributed safely and according to local health regulations.
• Vaccinated guides: Most Culinary Backstreets guides have been vaccinated, and the few remaining are testing themselves regularly while they wait for the jab.

• Going local: Our food tours and culinary trips continue to feature independent, family-run businesses and spotlight local products and small producers.
• Respecting local needs: Since new regulations require restaurants to limit their seating, we will make sure that our tours and trips don’t displace local patrons.
• Honoring tradition: We continue to honor the traditions of the communities we work with by promoting their cultural and culinary heritage.

• Reducing ground transportation: Conscious of the carbon footprint of our tours and trips, we are redoubling our effort to keep our tours and trips, as much as possible, on foot.

We encourage guests to bring their own water bottle which we can refill throughout the day. We’re also persuading restaurants to offer filtered water as an alternative to plastic bottles.

Carolina, Athens Bureau Chief Carolina was born in Athens where she grew up in a family with a long culinary tradition. Having studied arts management she pursued a career as a curator but quickly set her museum work to follow her true passion: cooking! Since then, along with her work as CB’s Athens bureau chief, Carolina has been working as a chef, restaurant consultant and food stylist. She is also the Culinary Producer of My Greek Table, a TV series on Greek gastronomy, broadcast on PBS across the US. She has appeared on various cooking shows on Greek and Spanish TV and gives cooking classes and workshops in Athens. She is the author of Salt of the Earth, Secrets and Stories from a Greek Kitchen (Quadrille, March 2023).

Constantine, Athens Walk Leader Constantine is a third generation Athenian. He studied nursing, acting and radio script writing. He started working as an actor at the tender age of 16, and later he moved on to become a radio host and a TV presenter on Mad TV (a Greek music channel). A natural entertainer with a smooth baritone, Constantine is also a student of his city with his finger on the pulse of the arts, culture and culinary scene. He loves cooking and reading books about health, food and music.

Diana, Athens Correspondent CB Athens correspondent Diana, a native of the Big Apple, moved to the Big Olive in 1972. Passionate about the country and its “soul food,” she began writing guidebooks and food columns in the late 80s and has since published scores of articles and three cookbooks: Prospero’s Kitchen, about the Ionian Islands, Feasting and Fasting in Crete and 2016’s A Taste Of Greece. For ten years chief travel correspondent for the weekly Athens News, she now writes a column, “Eating Well Is The Best Revenge,” for the website Weekly Hubris, and for the new monthly Greece Is. She is also working on a memoir of her early years in Greece.

Johanna, Athens Correspondent Johanna was born in London, but raised in the northern suburbs of Athens. She Archaeology in Athens and Oxford, but food and everything around it finally won her over. Johanna started her blog, Food Junkie, in 2007 as a bilingual food blog to showcase Greek and other recipes and it has since then become one of the most successful Greek food blogs. She considers Athens to be a fascinating culinary capital and hopes others will also see it as such!

Kyriaki (“Kiki”), Athens Walk Leader Kiki was born in Athens but she originally comes from the islands, Crete and Santorini. Her day job is at a desk, working as a travel editor for a major Greek newspaper, where she dreams of living those travel stories she edits. On the weekends, leading tours in the backstreets, she lives out those travel experiences and loves introducing guests to the charms of her city. She’s an avid homecook with a journalistic instinct to research the dish, its history and also the life story of the people in the kitchen.

Manteau Stam, Athens Photographer Manteau is an Athens-based photographer who has been part of the CB Athens team since its inception.

Natali Chavez is film and theater actress, voiceover artist and event specialist. She obtained a B.A. in International Business and Politics, a MSc in Services Management, an Acting Diploma accredited by Greek Ministry of Culture and since 2021 she has been a PhD candidate in Film Department of School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the field of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality and Cinema. She began her career in media as a presenter on the television music channels “Mad TV” and “Blue.” Natali was also a host for several years at top radio stations in Greece. She has written three theatrical plays and a number of children’s books. She is a food and foreign language lover and always excited to share food tips mixed with Athenian history and spiced up with art.

A native of Athens, Sofia studied Chemical Engineering and Environmental Studies. It was during her studies that she first got her taste for Athens’s backstreets, as a member of a theater group that performed mainly outdoors in several of the city’s central neighborhoods. After her studies, Sofia lived and worked in several other European cities including Barcelona, Paris and Milan and Como. Since returning to Athens, she has worked in everything from catering house dinner parties to supporting a street photographer and contributing to music video production. She believes in traveling with a purpose and loves learning about a city, its people, food, culture and everyday life. For Sofia, travel is not only about the destination, it is about the connections made and the stories shared.

Constantine

CB’s work was started in 2009 by Ansel Mullins and Yigal Schleifer as a humble food blog called Istanbul Eats. The following year we published a book of our reviews, now in its fifth edition. That year we also launched our first culinary walk in Istanbul, a route we are still using today. In 2012, we realized that what we built in Istanbul was needed in other cities we knew and loved. We started CB that year with Athens, Barcelona, Mexico City and Shanghai as pioneering members of our network. In 2013, we added Rio and also launched our iPhone application in Istanbul. In 2015, Tokyo and Tbilisi came into the fold. That year we published mini-guides to Barcelona and Athens and also launched an iPhone application in those cities. Our Eatinerary service, which provides travelers with tailor-made culinary travel itineraries, was also launched in 2015. In 2016, Lisbon – the latest city to kindle our curiosity – joined the CB network. In 2017 we added Naples and Queens, NY – two places with very compelling stories to tell – to our roster and also published full-size eating guides to Athens and Barcelona. In 2018, Porto joined the list of cities we cover.

What are the best things to do in Athens?

The best things to do in Athens are visiting the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum, as well as all the sites surrounding the historic part of town they are located in. In comparison to other European capitals, Athens is on the cheaper side, though tourist attractions and hotels can become pricy. While prices can vary, the average meal in Athens should cost around €25 per person. Breakfast prices are generally cheaper than lunch or dinner. The average price of a 3-star hotel in Athens is about €80-120, though nightly apartments are much cheaper. A coffee or cheap beer cost just under €2.

Is Athens safe?

Athens is considered a very safe city, even for solo female travelers. Visitors can be put off by the graffiti that proudly covers some of Athens’s neighborhoods, Exarchia in particular. But this street art is a part of the city’s history and feel. The crime rate is very low and as long as you take normal precautions, you will feel safe here. The History of the Olympic Games, From Ancient Greece to the Modern Era

Take a trip back to 776 B.C.E. with this fun look back at the sporting event started by the ancient Greeks.

The Olympics are back for another summer of record-breaking, historic Games.

Come July 2024, millions will descend upon Paris, France to attend the Summer Games. Some attendees are hoping to see their favorite athletes take home the gold in their respective sports, while others are merely excited to see skateboarders like Nyjah Huston do an ollie at the Place de la Concorde. In short, there's something for everyone, an aspect of the Games that has made it an enduring institution in the modern era. 

However, while the Games have changed pretty drastically in the centuries since the Greeks first established the event, many of its traditions date back to 776 B.C.E.

When were the first Olympics?

Though historians can't be totally sure, it's believed the first Ancient Olympic game was recorded in 776 B.C.E., according to Olympics.com . Games were subsequently held every four years from then until 393 C.E.

It wasn't simply an athletic competition when it began, but instead a "religious festival held in a religious sanctuary," Paul Christesen, professor of Ancient Greek History at Dartmouth College, told Olympics.com. Olympia, after all, was the mythical home of the ancient Greek gods such as Zeus, and the earliest Games were undertaken with religion front and center. For more than two centuries, races would conclude at the sacred olive tree of Zeus, and the victory wreaths awarded to the winners were cut from that same tree. 

The Games were even given a divine origin in Greek mythology, which held the Gods competed in the first-ever Games. According to the legend, Herakles, also known as Hercules, created the Olympics and was one of its strongest competitors. Zeus is also said to have competed against his father, Kronos, for the throne, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art .

Why were the Ancient Olympic Games created?

The Gods were the focal point of the Games, which provided an opportunity for the Greek to come together and celebrate their deities for five days straight. Amid the games, they sacrificed cows to honor Zeus in particular, an occasion that saw famed boxer Milon of Croton show off his brute strength in fabulous fashion. "As part of the big sacrifice (to Zeus held during each Games) he carried a cow into the sanctuary on his back, killed it and then ate the whole cow himself in a single day," Christesen told Olympics.com .

Ancient Olympic Sports and Rules

At the time, all Greek males were allowed to compete in the event and attend, regardless of rank and status. Women, on the other hand, were forbidden entirely from the Games.

Though this limited the amount of spectators in attendance, records show that the stadium in Olympia once fit 40,000 people, according to Olympics.com. Other Grecians and people from around the Mediterranean also gathered outside the stadium, which was eventually transformed from a wheat field into a massive stadium. There was food, music, and vendors selling souvenirs to the people who came from near and far. 

As for the sporting events, there were foot races, jumping, discus throwing, javelin throwing, wrestling, the pentathlon, and a form of hand-to-hand combat known as pankration — a mix of boxing and wrestling. Later, chariot races and other events would be added to the program.

Much like today, athletes rigorously prepared for their respective sports, working with trainers for weeks before the Games began.

When the day finally came for the competitors to take center stage, they had to strip down. That's right — in the Ancient Olympics, all athletes competed entirely naked, even for the hand-to-hand combat events, as music played in the background. To make it more competitive, the wrestlers and pankration athletes were also covered in oil, according to Olympics.com. 

There were few rules governing the Games themselves, creating a violent spectacle for those in attendance. In pankration, the only restrictions were that athletes couldn't gouge each other in the eyes or bite, while boxers were merely advised to avoid hitting their opponent's genitals.

And since there were no time limits or points being taken, the matches could be long. One competitor, Sostratos, was nicknamed "Fingertips" because he'd start off the match by breaking his adversary's fingers, according to The Met. Then, there was Melankomas of Caria, who is reported to have won his matches without dealing a single blow. Per the Met, his tactic was to dodge hits and exhaust his competitor until they signaled defeat by raising their index fingers. Christesen told Olympics.com that some athletes would die if they didn't raise their index fingers and surrender in time. 

Though medals did not yet exist, victors were awarded the aforementioned wreaths cut from the olive trees of Olympia in the early games. Other prizes largely depended on the location of the games. For example, in one of the ceremonies, winners were gifted a hydria, also known as a water jar. Some of these water jars had the names of the presiding official and the Greek God honored by the event, as seen in photos from The Met.

When did the Ancient Olympics end?

Most historians agree that the Ancient Olympics drew to a close in 393 C.E., when Roman emperor Theodosius I banned cities from hosting games because of its paganist roots. However, historian Tony Perrottet writes in  The Naked Olympics that some cities in Greece continued to host the Games, as discovered in ancient inscriptions and writings. 

When did the Modern Olympics start?

Centuries later, Baron Pierre de Coubertin — the designer of the now iconic Olympic rings — and others organized the Olympic Congress, held at the Grand Amphitheatre at the Sorbonne University in June 1894. The sporting events held that week would serve as a template for future iterations of the Games and allowed organizers to formalize decisions surrounding the first official Games, which would be held in Athens, Greece two years later. With a date set and venue chosen, the International Olympic Committee was established and work got underway. 

To prepare for the Games' resurrection, the Panathenaic stadium in Athens, where the ancient games were believed to be held, had to be renovated to accommodate the crowds of tourists and athletes. Nearly 80,000 people are estimated to have attended, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities , while athletes from 13 nations competed in 43 different sporting events.

According to early reports from  The Guardian , the June 1896  Opening Ceremony included a speech by the Greek Crown Prince Constantine. At the end of the Games, the Royal Family returned to the stadium to crown the victors, a majority of whom were Americans, and held a banquet in their honor.

"Let me express the pleasure that all feel in seeing you come here to take part in the Olympic games. Your reception shows how the Greek people rejoiced to receive you.  I seize this occasion to extend my warmest congratulations to the victors… Keep us close in your remembrance and do not forget the enthusiastic welcome we have given you," King George I told the winners, the New York Tribune  reported.

And since then, the Games have been held regularly, becoming both a sporting competition and cultural exchange for the world community.

What to Know About Xi Jinping’s Trip to Europe

The Chinese president this week will be visiting France, Serbia and Hungary. His trip comes at a time of tensions with many European countries over trade and accusations of Chinese espionage.

This week, for the first time in five years, President Xi Jinping of China is visiting Europe, with stops in France, Serbia and Hungary.

Mr. Xi’s trip comes at a time of tensions with many European countries over China’s support for Russia in the face of its war in Ukraine, its trade practices and its apparent espionage activities . The trip will also test Europe’s delicate balancing act between China and the United States.

Mr. Xi hopes to head off a trade war with the European Union as frictions rise over exports of Chinese electric vehicles and diminished market access for European companies in China. Mr. Xi will also encourage President Emmanuel Macron of France to pursue greater autonomy from the United States in a bid to weaken Washington’s global dominance.

Here is what we know about Mr. Xi’s trip, which began Sunday.

What is the significance of Mr. Xi’s itinerary?

The three countries Mr. Xi will be visiting, experts say , to varying degrees embrace China’s push for a redefined global order. All have to some extent questioned America’s postwar ordering of the world, and are eager to bolster ties with Beijing.

Hungary has close ties to China and is keen to attract Chinese investments in areas like electric car and battery manufacturing as Chinese producers expand beyond Asia. Serbia, too, has warm relations with Beijing and has secured billions of dollars in Chinese investment.

Mr. Xi’s first stop is France, where Mr. Macron recently said that Europe “must never be a vassal of the United States,” and has cast France as a bridge between the “Global South” and Western powers.

Despite his courting of Beijing, Mr. Macron has said he is still closer to its ally, the United States, than to China.

“I prefer to choose my relationship with the United States, with China, rather than have it imposed on me by one of the two parties, either pushing me in one direction or pulling me in the other,” he said in an interview with The Economist magazine. But, he added: “Very clearly, we are not equidistant. We are allies of the Americans.”

Before Mr. Xi’s visit, Chinese diplomats expressed hopes that ties between France and China would be at the forefront of China’s relations with the West .

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, the E.U.’s executive branch, joined talks on Monday with Mr. Xi and Mr. Macron in Paris.

This year is also a symbolic one for China and the three countries.

It is the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France and the 75th of those with Hungary.

This year is also the 25th anniversary of the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, during the Kosovo war, which killed three Chinese journalists and set off angry protests at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Chinese authorities have continued to point to the bombing as a sign of NATO aggression and an example of why Russia was justified in feeling threatened before it decided to invade Ukraine.

When was the last time Mr. Xi visited Europe?

Mr. Xi’s last European visit was in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, which he spent hunkered down in China, leaving the country’s borders for the first time in the fall of 2022 .

The 2019 trip included a flashy ceremony in Rome to celebrate Italy’s participation in China’s Belt and Road global infrastructure project, which is aimed at expanding China’s influence abroad. France rolled out the red carpet for Mr. Xi in Paris and signed more than a dozen commercial and governmental treaties worth billions of euros, even as Mr. Macron warned that “China plays on our divisions” and that “the period of European naïveté is over.”

Mr. Xi also visited Greece , where he pledged his support to the country in its struggle with Britain to obtain the Parthenon sculptures known as the Elgin Marbles .

How is the relationship between Europe and China?

Since Mr. Xi’s last visit, there has been a widening rift in the relationship between China and much of Europe. The coronavirus pandemic , Beijing’s embrace of Russia and its repression of ethnic minorities, and a surge in Chinese exports have generated backlashes against China in many European countries.

China has quintupled car shipments to foreign markets in recent years, and the European Union has recently adopted a more confrontational tone over China’s trade practices. E.U. authorities have opened an investigation that could result in limits on Chinese solar exports, and have taken preliminary steps toward restricting trade with Chinese goods that include electric cars, wind turbines and medical devices.

Italy has also told China that it would no longer participate in its Belt and Road Initiative, and last month, six people in Europe were charged with spying for China in the span of a week, in a sign that European countries are stepping up their response to Chinese espionage.

At the same time, European nations vary in their views on how to engage with Beijing and benefit from economic opportunities there, and some are fearful of any imposition of European tariffs.

Mr. Macron and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany also think that China’s leverage will be critical in bringing an end to the war in Ukraine.
