The Vamps (formed in 2012) are a British pop boyband consisting of Brad Simpson, James McVey, Connor Ball and Tristan Evans.

The Vamps are a fine example of how social media has brought like-minded individuals together and propelled acts to national and international stardom. Formed of Bradley William Simpson on lead vocals and guitar, James McVey on lead guitar and vocals, Connor Ball on bass guitar and vocals and Tristan Evan on drums and vocals.

Lead guitarist James McVey in 2011 was being managed by Prestige Management, however soon decided he’d like to form a band and soon found Brad Simpson through YouTube and began writing songs. The year after in 2012 the pair met Tristan Evans via Facebook and subsequently Connor Ball through a mutual friend. The band started uploading covers to their YouTube channel and amassed a young and enthusiastic fan base, and signed to Mercury Records at the tail end of 2012.

The Vamps secured support slots for on McFly’s Memory Lane Tour in April and May 2013 and for Selena Gomez at London, UK’s Hammersmith Apollo, which introduced the band to a much wider audience. The Vamps also supported Taylor Swift on the London leg of her 2014 tour for her album “Red”.

The band’s first original song entitled “Wildheart”, uploaded onto their Youtube account on the 22 July 2013 received well over 46,000 views within the first two days, and their follow-up “Can We Dance”, on the 6 August 2013, received over a million within two weeks. “Can We Dance” was later released on 29 September 2013, debuting at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart.

In April 2014 The Vamps released their long-awaited debut album “Meet The Vamps” to an understandable mass of fan-girl appreciation. The album charted at No. 2 in the UK Albums Chart, pipped to the top spot by Paolo Nutini’s “Caustic Love”.

Live reviews

I found out about The Vamps a few months ago, in fact I believe last December (as of July 27th currently), and ever since then I have been in love with their music and the boys themselves.

I used to be a total One Direction fan until I found The Vamps and let me just tell you: these guys are natural performers. They opened up for Austin Mahone and played "Last Night," "Wild Heart," "Trumpets" (a cover), "Can We Dance," "Somebody To You" (EP being released in a few weeks in the US), and "Oh Cecelia." They also showed the "Somebody To You" music video featuring Demi Lovato and Laura Marano.

Overall they were incredible, getting the crowd really excited and joking around with their bandmates (Brad Simpson as lead singer and guitarist, Tristan Evans on drums and backup vocals, James McVey as guitar and backup vocals, and Connor Ball as bassist and backup vocals), announcing to their crowd how amazing they are and loud compared to previous shows. They also told us lyrics to some songs they were going to sing so we could sing along to their music.

Speaking of their music, they had their first album released a month ago, including easily danceable songs like "Can We Dance" and "Wild Heart." I was pumping my fists and dancing throughout their whole performance because they were great at getting everyone excited. I was a little disappointed though because not many people actually knew who these guys were.

During the concert, Brad was running around the stage and dancing while changing up some notes on songs like in "Oh Cecelia" at the end he sang, "Oh CECELIAAAAA!" (screaming the note) and went insane, nodding his head and moving his fists around it was absolutely hilarious and fantastic at the same time to see him get so excited. He also seemed really happy whenever he told us to point to the band and say "Hey, YOU!" at certain parts in the song "Somebody To You." When we did, he said, "Whoa, that's awesome." He also got pretty sweaty while dancing and singing (who wouldn't? He was in Texas!), and he had a towel available to wipe down his face and arms. After doing so, he said, "Sorry guys, I'm pretty sweaty right now...who wants this towel?!" The crowd cheered him on and Brad continued, "Wow, that's pretty gross, alright!" Then proceeded to throw it into the air, being caught by a fan.

Towards the end of The Vamps' concert, Brad told the crowed to put their hands in the air, saying it like, "Now we want you all to put your hands in the air! There you go! Phew, we can smell all the BO from up here! Haha, it doesn't matter, keep them up there!" That should show you how energetic and optimistic the band was for the entire concert, not to mention them messing with Connor and Brad going up to the drum sets where Tristan was and dancing all over them!

I couldn't believe how little fans The Vamps had, some girls I talked to said "We have no idea who they are" when I told them I was here to see The Vamps. The band was ecstatic before and after the show when fans would come up to them for pictures, and they took the time to talk to each of them. They truly deserve more fans than they have (none of the boys have at least 1 million followers/subs!). Their music has a wide variety from total pop to acoustic-indie to Indie Rock. I would recommend anyone goes to see The Vamps whenever they come to their town, even if it's just an opening act because their performance was certainly not a forgettable one.

It was the best day ever! I went with my younger sister around 11am to the stadium and we met with some of her internet friends. We were so close to the door of our row, it was almost a dream come true! We talked a lot, listened music, shared some stories about our previous concerts. About 2 or 2.30 pm we went to eat at Burger King that it was crossing the street and other girls that we met there stayed taking care of our place. When we were returning to the line, I saw that the guards were putting some fences around the principal door, so I said we should stay there for a while and I was right! A few minutes later The Vamps arrived at the stadium and I saw them! They were just in front of my eyes! Everyone were calmed at first, but when they went out of the car the fans started to scream and it was insane! They went out one by one with their guard, and when it was the turn of James, a girl ran to him and hugged him! I shocked at that time, really, James is my crush and she just had hugged him! When they all were inside of the stadium the fans started to leave the principal door, but the guards didn't remove the fences, so I thought that The Tide were coming, and once again I was right! My sister and I went to the front of the fence, and when the car arrived, they went out one by one again (Austin & Nate touched my sister's hand!!!) When they were inside, my sister started to cry so hard, and I was literally shaking, then we all went back to our places on the line.

Some time later, when we were on our row, there were a lot of fans making another line, we went to ask and The Tide were doing an autographs signing. In that moment I didn't know them so I let my sister and her friend there waiting and I went to my place.

The night was coming slowly and we were getting so nervous...

It was around 7pm and the guards began to stand up to everyone. We were so excited... We made a huge group of girls there, and we started to sing every song from The Vamps and some other ones of others artists, we shouted to other fans, and we shouted from the bottom of our lungs because we were very excited and the guards wouldn't let us get inside yet.

We were there waiting about an hour and a half and finally they let us get in!

We were in f*cking front row of the floor, it wasn't next to the stage, if not it was in the back of the floor. When The Tide go on stage we started to scream and we didn't know the songs at first, but a few minutes later we were jumping and singing hahahahha

Around a hour later it was the turn of The Vamps! We cried a lot, we screamt a lot, we laughed a lot, it was so unreal.

It was one of my favourite concerts, it's the #1 at the time!

The Vamps were amazing to see live. I had been to the Fillmore Silver Springs before and was not suprised that the venue staff would be just as caring as they were.

The Vamps' opening acts, The Tide and Before You Exit, were both amazing to watch perform. The Tide are a new up and coming band and they definitlely got the whole crowd pumped up for the acts to come. Before You Exit were so much fun to watch. Both acts were great and really took advantage of the whole stage and got the whole crowd jumping.

As for the Vamps, they were beyond amazing. I've been to quite a few concerts and The Vamps has got to be my favorite. I stood on Connor Ball's (bassist) side but him and James were constantly switching sides and running around. Brad Simpson was so wonderful, his voice is so unique and the kind of voice you have to hear in person to give it justice. He danced the whole time and jumped into the crowd. The whole band are such great performers. Tristans drum solo helped give everyone a break from jumping to a song they recognized and gave us all a moment to appreciate just how talented of a drummer he truly is. Connor sang the famous MCR song "Teenagers" and James sang the Vamps "Move My Way". No band member was left out, each of them had their chance to shine and be heard.

I can not stress how amazing they are. They sang pop and pop punk covers that appealed to a wide variety of listeners and were popular as well as their signiture songs. The whole crowd was jumping and there was a beautiful moment when you realize that eveyone in the room, despite their differences, was all together enjoying a wonderful moment.

A special moment for me was being able to catch the attention of Connor Ball and have Tristans drumstick thrown right at me.

So if you're debating whether or not to pay to see the Vamps, your money will get used wisely and there's not another band quit like the Vamps.

This is the third time i have seen The Vamps live in manchester and they never seize to amaze me, They just get better and better each year, their whole stage persona is just incredible. The show they put on and the relationship in which they have with their fans is so genuine and the emotion they put into their songs is so moving when your their hearing it first hand. You can tell they are doing what they love and something which they have worked so hard for. Brad Simpson's talent vocal skills, sense of humour and his ability to communicate with the fans on such a personal level is something most headline acts struggle massively with. James McVey's talent, vocal skills and the emotion in which he puts into the music moves his many fans. Tristan Evan's pure pure talent is incredible, his drum solo is something to leave everyone in pure awe, being there in the room witnessing it first hand makes you feel the passion and talent something which listening to their music on a CD is maybe something you don't understand. Connor Ball's ability to capture the crowd and adds to the atmosphere of the whole excitement, making the crowd want to jump around and completely just let loose. Overall just an incredible act to witness live and i have never ever left one of their concerts with out feeling like i was on cloud nine and just feeling amazed and in awe of their whole act message and their relationship with the fans.

WOW! When i first found out about the arena tour i was at the 2014 'Meet The Vamps' Tour in Newcastle. I got rather excited when i found out i could get a ticket for just £9.50, i knew then that yes the seats wouldn't be like other concerts I've been to where i could literally reach my hand out and touch the person on stage, but i was ecstatic.

When my mum brought me the order form and i saw that we were in block E i wasnt sure how to feel knowing we were at the very back of the floor seating, but again i got over it.

When we arrived at the venue my fangirling level escalated at the Merch lining the walls and the dinky doughnuts but i was still yet to see how far away i was from the stage. And i can honestly say i nearly cried at the sight of exactly how far away we were.

I could admit that i was mostly upset at the fact that my phone couldnt even get a decent zoom on the huge screens, but infact it made the experience even better because i could actually enjoy it knowing that my mum had her camera and i had a good excuse as to why i didnt have any good pictures.

And once the acts started flooding on and off stage i didnt have a single care in the world besides seeing my idols having the time of their lives on stage.

Tristan's Drum solo was by far the most amazing thing to watch the lights the music and general atmosphere were simply electric.

Had such an AMAZING time seeing The Vamps in Birmingham on the 25th of March.

Brad, James, Tristan and Connor put on one of the BEST shows EVER!

Connor did really well even with his knee, although he struggled with his usually movements, he brushed it to one side and put on a fantastic show.‬

My Favourite part was definitely seeing ‪#‎Jonnor‬ perform my ALL TIME FAVOURITE the Vamps song: Written Off.

The support acts: HomeTown, Conor Maynard, and The Tide were also awesome.

The boys also had a few surprises up their sleeves when they invited New Hope Club to the stage to see Oh Cecelia with them and then OMI come on stage to perform the boys new song: I Found A Girl.

But the boys weren't done there; there was more surprises when Brad performed a solo version of a song off the THIRD album which they are currently working on, called Stay.

Fabulous night, the boys had so much energy from coming on with Risk It All, to returning for the encore and ending the show with Wake Up.

Definitely a great experience, and definitely got moneys worth, with the guys £10 tickets.

Thanks lads for EVERYTHING!

this was the best concert I've ever been to. we got there around 12 pm and the row was pretty long already. the doors opened at 6:30 pm and that was pretty chaotic. they splitted us in groups from 100 (I think) persons. I was in the first group, when the door opened everyone started pushing each other (that's normal though). when we were in, our tickets had to get scanned. after they scanned the tickets everyone started running because they wanted to be on the front row. some security quards told us to stop running and walk. when we were in the hall, the stage was right in the middle and there were curtains at both sides. we were at front row but in front of these curtains. the boxes were on the corners of the stage so we couldn't see tristan and brad (when he was playing piano). that was really ashame. if those boxes were on the ground (what they really should've done since there was a lot of space left) it should be even more amazing than it already was.

I think it was this specific concert venue, but the mics were too quiet compared to the rest of the instruments.

Also, my mom is a huge Rush fan. She and I were really impressed with the drumming and drum solos. I think The Vamps understood the drumming was really good as they gave the drummer as much stage playing as possible.

Overall, the visuals were really good and if you’re a fan of The Vamps, I really recommend it.

My mom hardly knew any of the songs and was ready to leave early to get enough sleep before our flight the next day, but the drumming and performance kept her captivated and she appreciated staying for the whole concert.

I of course was a fan and wanted to stay anyways. I was really staying to see New Hope Club But I was actually really impressed with The Vamps’ performance even more than I thought I’d be.

Basically, if you’re a fan of The Vamps or New Hope Club, I suggest you go. It was really good. :)

When i first heard that The Vamps were coming to my country i got so excited, because i had liked them for like a year and always wanted to go see them. I got a bit disappointed when none of my friends wanted to see them but i did´t want that to stop me from being my favourite band so i bought a ticket anyways.

And let´s just say it was worth any penny!! And they weren´t even the headliners, they were just a support band.

The show was amazing. You could literally feel their energy and they jumped around stage and just made everyone smile, jump and sing along.

And they sound AMAZING live too!

They just make you happy and i promise you, that you will not get dissapointed if you buy a ticket to see The Vamps.

Even if you aren´t THAT big of a fan, you will be though after the concert :).

Years ago, these guys were FANTASTIC in concert. Lively, upbeat and very enjoyable. This gig not so much.

The "backbone" of their music is the punchy, driving rhythms that makes their music entertaining and danceable. That was missing.

Guys, get back to what you are good at.

Best bits - Wild Heart, Wake

Not so Good - Missing you, Somebody to You (why was this acoustic?? - FAIL!)

Missing - Shades On, Cecila (both good examples of the songs with driving rhythms that I mentioned above).

Only about 3/4 full and having to give away tickets to get people to go is not a good sign guys....

Third time I have seen The Vamps in concert... wondering if it will be the last time I see them in concert... especially at The O2.

The Vamps announce global dates for ‘Greatest Hits’ 10th anniversary tour

Connor Gotto

The Vamps are taking their ‘Greatest Hits’ 10th anniversary show on the road.

The boyband is celebrating a decade since they formed with a string of UK dates this autumn, which they’ll take internationally next spring.

The Vamps tease sixth studio album amid 10th anniversary celebrations: ‘Our approach will be different’

“We are so excited to announce we will be bringing our 10 Year Anniversary Greatest Hits tour to Australia, Asia and Europe next year,” they said in an announcement.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Vamps (@thevamps)

“It’s been a while since we’ve been back to see some of you and it’s going to be a blast.”

Beginning February 1 in Brisbane, Australia, the boys will perform a mammoth run of dates before wrapping in Warsaw, Poland on March 27.

For on sale dates, head over to The Vamps’ social media pages.

The group, which formed in 2012 and released debut album ‘Meet The Vamps’ in 2014, have delivered five albums over the past seven years, including chart-toppers ‘Night & Day (Night Edition)’ and ‘Cherry Blossom’.

Speaking in the September 2022 edition of Retro Pop, the group revealed plans to begin work on a new LP in 2023.

“It’s open ended, but I think we’ll start writing what will be the sixth album in the middle of next year,” says Bradley Simpson. “That’s the loose idea at the moment. We are best friends, so we look forward to getting in the studio together.

“On the last album, we did Airbnbs, so we’d book a week away together, take the studio with us, and it’s just fun. It’s work, but it’s a holiday too.”

However, they insist there’s no pressure to return to the studio and, when it come to the group’s future output, they’re planning to take their time and enjoy the process.

“A lot of bands wouldn’t put out five albums in the space of seven years,” he adds. “So I think there are certain things that we’ve looked back on over the past 10 years that we’re really glad that we did, but our approach to albums will be different now and it’ll maybe be at a slower pace.”

The group’s 10th anniversary tour will be a celebration of a decade of hits, and Tristan Evans is looking forward to revisiting some of their lesser-performed material.

“This is, for us, an excuse to play all of our songs together,” he beams. “This is like the ‘Today’s Top Hits’ playlist for The Vamps.

“Before, we’ve only promoted specific albums, but for this one, it’s like this is ‘The Vamps show’, so technically it’s like the first Vamps tour we’ve ever done.”

Wonderland.

As their wildly successful Cherry Blossom tour comes to a close and with their 10 year anniversary fast approaching, the beloved boyband candidly talk the evolution of their sound and what the future holds for them.

The Vamps

Photography by Chazz Adnitt and Josh Fairbrother

When thinking on the adoration and hype-stirring powers possessed by British boybands, the mind fails to comprehend. But after spending 10 minutes in the presence of The Vamps, all of the above becomes instantly understandable.

Having made their beginnings on streaming platforms almost a decade ago, the wildly-adored 4-piece collective made a name for themselves thanks to their glimmering pop sound and undeniable charming persona. And now, almost 10 years on from their explosive formation, Bradley Simpson, Tristan Evans, James McVey and Connor Ball proved that they are still planted firmly on an upwards trajectory as they embarked on a post-COVID touring of their mature-sounding and soul-baring album, Cherry Blossom .

When speaking on the sound of their latest release, band vocalist Brad divulged, “With each album, we have kind of pushed ourselves a bit more, and we have really tried to integrate all of the live elements that we have honed in over the past seven years touring. I think we have refined our sound as a live band, so trying to capture that on an album is something that we felt we hadn’t done before. So, I think that really influenced the sound of this.”

The Vamps venue

And, Brad’s statement is nothing short of an understatement. Whilst gracing prestigious stages and venues across the country during their triumphant 10-show-long tour, the band served up an array of impressively energetic performances as adoring fans were treated to infectious reworks on classic tracks such as “Cecilia” and “Wild Heart”, whilst also being invited to bop along and rock out too Cherry Blossom ’s most celebrated tracks.

Underneath the apt scenes of a cherry blossom-toned sky whilst casually hanging about backstage at the Eventim Apollo, Brad, Tristan, James and Connor took some time out of their hectic tour schedule to candidly chat to Wonderland about the evolution of their sound, how their individuality informs the band’s vibe and what the future holds for each of them. Head below to enjoy our interview with The Vamps…

The Vamps Brad on stage

Let’s get straight into it! How are you guys? How are you doing? James : Good! Tristan : Very good! Brad : Good, excited for the show!

Yeah, are you excited about the show? Brad : Very excited! This is actually the first big London venue we played during our first theatre tour!

So it is almost as if you are returning home! How has life been in terms of COVID? How does it feel to be back touring with lots of people around? Tristan : It has been weird, obviously, for everyone. But, for us, because we were touring so much and that was all we knew, this was the first time that we were kind of forced to stop. But that was quite nice, in a way. We chilled for a bit; we have got so much energy now to get back on stage, and to be on tour here is incredible. It is almost a bit surreal being back!

I can imagine! So, for those who don’t know, can you talk us through how you met and how you started as a band? James : We met ten years ago! Ten years ago next month is when I met Brad.

Crazy! And, how did you guys meet? James : Tinder. Brad : He wined and dined me a bit. James : Yeah, him and his mum picked me up from the station. No, we met through YouTube mainly and Facebook. Brad : Socials mainly! We met Connor off of the back of that, and we got signed off of the back of that and built our fanbase from there.

The Vamps Brad

Amazing! And, congratulations on tonight! It is quite a prestigious venue to play in. How are you feeling about being at a venue like the Apollo? Tristan : It’s a vibe! There is a lot of history and culture to it. And, we have played here before, so it is really special. Weirdly, I was born here in Hammersmith – James : You see that staircase there? Brad : On the left? Tristan : Yeah, my mum used to work here about 30 years ago, and she popped me out in the staircase over there. James : Really?! Tristan : No haha, I was born in Hammersmith, though.

I was so confused as to if you were being serious or not! Well, we are obviously on the Cherry Blossom tour. The album is great, by the way! Can you talk us through the sound a bit? I feel like it is quite a mature sound for you guys and quite different from what you have put out before! Everyone : Thank you! Brad : Yeah, with each album, we have kind of pushed ourselves a bit more, and we have really tried to integrate all of the live elements that we have honed in over the past seven years touring. I think we have refined our sound as a live band, so trying to capture that on an album is something that we felt we hadn’t done before. So, I think that really influenced the sound of this. James : It is weird actually. We actually started this album years ago, really! Tristan : Two and half years ago? Brad : Maybe even four? James : It is really hard to remember the infancy stages of it. But, I think that even though this album sounds very different to our first, in a way, it kind of harps back to that for me because I think that there are a lot of instruments on this album, especially in comparison to our second album which was slightly more DJ and dance-heavy. So, I feel like, in a way, our sound has come full circle.

And, you are halfway through the tour, right? Brad : Just over halfway!

Just over! Have you had any highlights so far? Maybe any stories that you think people would love to hear? Brad : All the shows have been good, really, really good. Liverpool was very sweaty! But, it has been really good. Genuinely, I know it sounds really cliche, but to be back on stage is such a good feeling. Seeing people back in the room altogether and just doing what we love, as Tris said, it’s very surreal at first. But then, everyone just got back into it. This is a shorter tour for us, though. We usually do 15 dates, maybe?

And, how many dates are you doing this time around ? Brad : This is 10 dates! Tristan : Or, usually it would be a world tour, but we can’t do that right now. But, eventually!

Is that on the cards, potentially? Brad : We have got some stuff planned for next year. We have some stuff for Europe, and then we are supporting a band called Picture This in Ireland next year, which will be good fun!

Amazing! And, track wise, do you have a favourite one to perform from any of your albums? Tristan : I like “Somebody To You”. James : “Chemicals” is pretty cool, that is off the new album, and that has a guitar riff in it which is fun. “Cecilia” has also been reworked for this tour, which is pretty cool! Connor : Tonight we have extra lights as well because it is a big London show. The ones with those lights and lasers are going to be really cool!

The Vamps James

We are in for a show! So, we did speak a bit about how your ten year anniversary is coming up, which is quite a milestone! What do you think has kept you guys going this long? Brad : Just staying in a big contract, really. Connor : And, alcohol. Contracts and Alcohol : the new album! James : It’s pushy parents, for me. Brad : No, it’s true friendship!

Also, can we speak about your outfits and band aesthetic? I feel like most bands go for a cohesive look but yours is very individual, do you think your outfits play into your own styles? Tristan : I think we all have different and individual fashion senses that tap into The Vamps, and I think that is what makes us special. I think, with the music and the fashion, we have all got very different styles and we are just this weird collaboration of freaks that have come together!

Freaks, I love that! Well, what is next? What are you looking forward to? Tristan : I mean, we have a couple of cool things in the pipeline that we might announce soon. And then, really just taking it easy with corona. Hopefully, that eases off and we can get back to normal soon so we can get back on the road even more! But, I think it is just taking life as it is and just chilling! James : I am getting married next month! Brad : It is going to be big!

No way, congratulation! Have you got your stag planned? James : Quite traditionally, my stag do is the night before the wedding!

VAMPS announce North & South American tour dates

Rock duo VAMPS are making their return to the live music scene in both North & South America! Last month in August the band announced that they would be playing three shows in The United States supporting Danzig, the founder of the iconic punk ronk band Misfits.

Due to high demand four additional solo dates have been added in North America, and two new dates have been scheduled for South America. The tour will focus on VAMPS’ latest album “ UNDERWORLD “, released earlier in the year in April.

Since forming in 2008, VAMPS have released 4 studio albums, 4 live DVDs, and 12 singles. They set themselves apart of their peers with grand-scale theatrics accompanied with exquisite songwriting and guitar playing. They have gone on to play hundreds of sold out shows and continued to establish their fanbase with annual events curated by the band, most notably the legendary “HALLOWEEN PARTY”.

Dates for the shows can be seen below, as well as, the bands latest lyric video for their track “UNDERWORLD”.

British pop-rock band The Vamps are in the midst of their “Night & Day” arena tour in support of their third studio album Night & Day. The United Kingdom run, which kicked off April 14th at Sheffield FlyDSA Arena, will run through June 1st in Denmark at Copenhagen, Vega. We’re putting together a tour recap and some questions you might have about the tour. SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read this if you want to be surprised!

Q: Who is opening for The Vamps?

There are four supporting acts: PM, HRVY, New Hope Club and Jacob Sartorius. The four acts warm up the crowd by having them sing and dance along with them.

Q: Have The Vamps brought out any special guests?

Two artists will be appearing on stage with The Vamps. During “Personal,” Maggie Lindemann joins the band on stage and then performs her single “Pretty Girl.” For the London and Manchester dates, Conor Maynard joined The Vamps on stage during their cover of “Shape Of You.”

Q: What songs do they cover?

Speaking of covers, the band cover a few songs. London was able to see “Shape of You” live with Conor Maynard. Other cities will get to see a mashup of “FRIENDS,” by Marshmellow & Anne-Marie, “New Rules” by Dua Lipa and “Havana” by Camila Cabello

Q: Are The Vamps doing anything special for fans?

The answer is YES. During the tour if you want to come on stage with them, tweet #OnStageWithTheVamps and include your city, block, row and seat number and they will pick a winner before each show. The fan will be on stage for the track “Risk It All.” Good luck!

Q: Has the setlist changed?

The Vamps top three most performed songs are “Wild Heart,” “Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) and “Can We Dance.” The three tracks are off their first studio album Meet the Vamps. Surprise, surprise, all three songs are on their current setlist.

Currently, the band is hoping to go South America and the U.S. in the summer.

Andra Day Soars at Special Club Show at New York’s Legendary Blue Note: Concert Review

Andra Day

It’s a strange sensation to see an artist who you last saw performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before a global audience of 120 million-plus at the Super Bowl singing ten feet in front of you at the Blue Note jazz club in New York’s Greenwich Village. But that was the consolation prize for 400 lucky fans who may not have been invited to the Met Ball on Monday night but certainly had a more satisfying feast for the ears.

Popular on Variety

And if there’s one thing the set had, it was live-band energy. While the new album was the main bill of fare, this was anything but the sterile play-the-new-songs-we-just-learned showcase that such concerts sometimes can be. Day and the musicians — guitar, bass, drums, two keyboards and three backing singers, somehow jammed onto the Blue Note’s small stage — were loose but tight like a great jazz/R&B band should be, taking flashy but unostentatious solos and incorporating other songs into her new ones.

While Day is very much her own artist, Badu and D’Angelo are solid signposts for “Cassandra” and its nimble fusion of hip-hop-informed R&B and jazz: a world-class singer who can belt when she wants to but is nuanced and never over-sings, backed by a disciplined but swinging set of musicians who can move from a complex jazz rhythm to Latin-inflected grooves at the drop of a hat. It’s an enormous progression from — and much more personal and assured than — her debut, which was released nearly a decade ago.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jem Aswad (@jemaswad)

Day was chatty and at times hilarious when talking with the audience between songs. The album clearly has a breakup theme, and she referenced it often. Before “Next Time” she said, “I’m not gonna lie to you guys, I’m a little bit pettier on this record than I’ve been in the past,” she said to laughter. “I try to take the high road and be like ‘It’s me,’ self-examining. But now I’m just like, ‘It’s your fault.”

And although she largely avoided material from her first album, she closed the set with a stunning version of “Rise Up,” her biggest hit. She showed the full range of her formidable vocal ability, soaring up and down the scale, going big and then quiet, throwing in jazzy vamps and gentle sighs, bringing the song to a galvanizing climax before bringing it back down and closing the set.

After she and the band exited the stage through the audience — as performers often do at the Blue Note — she lingered for a moment at one table. As she walked away it became clear she’d been chatting with Glenn Close, with whom she appears in the forthcoming Lee Daniels film “The Deliverance” (and who’d also appeared at Variety ’s Power of Women New York event late last week, honoring Mariska Hartigay.

It was that kind of night.

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse after a decade, performs double encore

the vamps tour america

On Thursday night, magic happened in Tennesseee.

Singer-songwriter Neil Young and rock band Crazy Horse came together to perform their hits over a two-hour show at FirstBank Amphitheater on their first tour together in a decade.

The 2024 "Love Earth Tour" features the now 78-year-old singer alongside the Los Angeles rock band yet again.

Canadian singer-songwriter Young, best known for songs "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon" and "Old Man," released the album "Fu##in' Up" with Crazy Horse on April 25, featuring nine rock 'n' roll tracks. The two have released 15 studio albums together.

Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their brief 16-stop tour on April 24 in San Diego and will continue with upcoming stops in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and more.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Thursday's concert in Franklin was originally slated for Wednesday evening, but was postponed by a day due to  inclement weather .

But Thursday night brought the calm after the storm; the evening was serene.

Neil Young returns to Spotify after 2-year hiatus following Joe Rogan controversy

After opener Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping , a musical performance art experience that draws from religion, Young hit the stage.

The set-up featured a backdrop with a galloping horse and giant speaker cabinets and road cases, the same ones Young took on the road with him for his "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978.

Young appeared in a striped cap, a denim work shirt that featured paint splatters and a Spartan Truck Equipment patch, black pants, black shoes and of course, his guitar, Old Black .

He mentioned the venue's beauty multiple times — a stage nestled in the woods of Graystone Quarry in Thompson’s Station.

"How you doin out there? Nice to see you," Young said to the Franklin crowd.

"What a beautiful place. You guys are very lucky to have this place."

Alongside Young was the band, comprised of 80-year-old Billy Talbot on bass and 80-year-old Ralph Molina on drums. They also have a new member, Micah Nelson on guitar.

Nelson, Willie Nelson 's 33-year-old son, took over for the band's previous guitarist Nils Lofgren earlier this year.

Throughout the show, Neil Young and the band played a 17-song set, full with jam sessions and occasional harmonies. Young was energized and playful, captivating the crowd with his trademark nasally, emotional voice.

The set list was mostly comprised of older hits, like 1969's "Cinnamon Girl" and 1972's "Heart of Gold."

The band didn't play any songs from their recent album; the most recent song was 1996's "Scattered (Let's Think About Livin')." Nelson's big moment came during the tune; he traded his guitar to play a swinging keyboard that descended from the ceiling.

Young's guitar playing—both electric and acoustic—was adept and agile. Though Young shared in January he has been playing guitar with arthritis in his hand for years, audience members wouldn't have guessed.

He played the blues on song "Vampire Blues," hitting guitar licks with a precision like Stevie Ray Vaughan's. He also performed drawn-out, warping guitar solos on songs like "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger."

Between songs, Young would hand his guitar off to his techs (who all wore white lab coats), but was audibly uncomfortable until he had a guitar in his arms yet again.

The night's concert walked the line between a Young that leaned into classic, grunge rock 'n' roll with Crazy Horse and a Young that gently cooed with Crosby, Stills & Nash in '69, strumming an acoustic.

Young pulled off the balancing act.

Here are some of the top moments from the night.

Neil Young opens with 'Cortez the Killer,' sings newly released verse

On a purple-lit stage, Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off the show with the 1975 song "Cortez the Killer."

The first lyrics from Young brought cheers from the audience as he sang, "He came dancing across the water / With his galleons and guns."

Young surprised fans at the first concert of the tour by singing unreleased lyrics to the song, ones he said did not record due to a power outage on the recording console in 1975.

Young found the lyric manuscript, he said in an interview mid-April this year.

The verse was lost for nearly 50 years. Young sang the verse again in Franklin.

“I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Neil Young calls on local non-profits to support his eco-friendly mission

Neil Young has been vocal about his environmental efforts throughout his career .

In 1985, Young helped establish the annual Farm Aid concerts . In 2022, he released album "World Record," an album that focuses on climate change. Later that year, Young said he refused to play venues that are supported by factory farms .

The environmentalism was felt at his Franklin show.

Upon entering the concert, fans saw a series of tents and tables from local environmental organizations all hand picked by Young, including Tennessee Local Food . The organizations attended the concert and chatted with fans about their missions.

Young calls it the "LOVE EARTH Village."

At different stops on the tour, hundreds of non-profits working for sustainability and social equity will join to chat about issues like organic farming, wildlife protection, Native American rights and climate change solutions.

According to a venue employee, Young also changed the menu for the venue's offerings on Thursday, opting for more eco-friendly options (Coke products were nowhere to be seen).

On a handout at the venue, Young wrote, "Support your friends, support your land, and support the people that want to care for the land.

"The revolution starts with us. The revolution starts with you."

Neil Young goes acoustic mid-show, takes stage alone

At one point, Young took an empty stage, traded Old Black for an acoustic, and donned the harmonica around his neck.

He sang songs, "Comes a Time," "Heart of Gold" and "Human Highway" onstage alone, leaning into his folk singer-songwriter roots.

Despite the occasional hoot or holler in the audience, a hush crept over the amphitheater as Young sang, played plucky guitar and showcased his harmonica skills between verses.

It was a gentler, softer and more intimate side to the evening.

"Heart of Gold" stood out among the acoustic section.

Young sang his biggest hit: "Keep me searching / For a heart of gold / I've been a miner / For a heart of gold."

An encore and...another encore

Before the encore, Young ended his set with song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," leaving the audience with the classic and singing, "Hey hey, my my / Rock and roll can never die."

And it didn't die just then, Young and the band returned to the stage to play "Roll Another Number (For the Road)" as their encore.

After the song finished, the audience didn't stop cheering. Young and company came back to deliver a second encore, this time three songs long.

For encore two, they performed "Danger Bird," "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Sedan Delivery," ending the night on a grungy rock 'n' roll note that included pink lights and plenty of reverb.

Afterwards, the band and Young gathered arm-in-arm in a single spotlight and gave their final bow.
