How to Plan Your Trip to Bodrum, Turkey — Aegean Sea Views, Luxury Hotels, and Incredible Restaurants Included

Come for the sparkling western Aegean coast, stay for the shopping, art scene, and fine dining.

bodrum travel review

Situated on Turkey’s western Aegean coast, Bodrum, a city of about 200,000, is known for its small and fragrant mandarins and for its summer scene. On the glittering coastline in the warmer months, some of the largest boats in the world come flocking to the Turkish marinas. Bodrum’s reputation has been cemented, for some, as a sun-soaked luxury escape within Europe.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • The exceptional luxury resorts along the water, including LXR's Susona Bodrum, in the Torba neighborhood, or the Mandarin Oriental overlooking Paradise Bay.
  • Wine tasting at Karnas Vineyard, a family-owned winery producing Turkey's first zinfandel.
  • Shopping the night bazaars for what one of our experts calls "a taste of the old Bodrum."
  • Fine dining at ambitious restaurants like Orfoz, next to the Zeki Müren Arts Museum.
  • The local arts scene; visit Zai Yaşam, an arts center, or the well-known art gallery Pilevneli.

But Bodrum is more than just glitz and glamour. Tucked away within this city are culinary delights, thought-provoking artists, and bazaars worth traveling for. Bodrum is a city that caters to the well-heeled, yes, but it is also a city of beaches and night markets, of boutique hotels and bespoke wineries.

For a guide to planning your trip to Bodrum – including when to go, where to stay, and what to do – read on.

Best Hotels & Resorts

At the 70-key Susona Bodrum, LXR Hotels & Resorts , which opened in Bodrum’s Torba neighborhood in 2020, bougainvillea and other native plantings line pathways and buildings. Guests staying at this hotel can enjoy an expansive view of the Aegean, multiple pools, a small beach, a spa with a hammam, and numerous casual and upscale dining venues.

The Bodrum Edition

The tony Yalikavak Marina is home to several shiny international hotel brands. “If you want the nightlife and craziness, you can have it — but if you want calm, you can have that, too,” Mina Dilber, founder of the lifestyle brand Anim Living , told T+L contributor Richard Godwin. At the 108-room Bodrum Edition , open since 2018, travelers will find a series of dining destinations, including the culinary hotspot Brava, a restaurant helmed by Peruvian chef Diego Muñoz.

Courtesy of The Bodrum EDITION

Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum

Yalikavak’s Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum , a 2014 addition to the area, offers 130 guest rooms and overlooks Paradise Bay. Eleven dining and drinking concepts, a spa, a kids club, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and even luxury helicopter tours round out this bespoke hotel.

Courtesy of Aman Resorts

Part of the Aman brand, Amanruya is a 36-room hotel in the Göltürkbükü neighborhood that opened in 2018. Pavilions are fashioned from stone and open into individual gardens with private swimming pools. The resort also offers a category of pool suite accommodation, also with a private pool. A comprehensive list of activities includes fishing, sailing, and cruising on a traditional Turkish gulet — a wooden masted vessel.

In the Göltürkbükü neighborhood, not far from Yalikavak, art galleries, jewelry makers, and clothing stores are interspersed between boutique hotels. More Turkish in scope than international, travelers can find the beating heart of Bodrum’s art scene, particularly at the 74-room Maçakizi , a boutique hotel that originally opened in the 1970s and that was refreshed in 2000. It often hosts pop-up exhibitions from artisan retailer ’74Escape .

Best Things to Do

Karnas vineyards.

Visit the 165-hectare Karnas Vineyards , which is planted to both grapes and olive trees. Visitors can sit down, dine, and taste wine overlooking the fields. As Feride Yalav-Heckeroth reported in the September 2023 issue of Travel + Leisure , the vineyard was founded by the İşmen family in 2005 “to produce Turkey’s first zinfandel — a grape they fell in love with during a trip to California’s Napa Valley.” The winery’s low-intervention and sustainable wines are available alongside their formidable multicourse tasting menu each night, for around $100.

Foodrum Culinary Park

Head over to Pelin Dumanli’s Foodrum Culinary Park , in the residential Bitez neighborhood. Dumanli, a formally trained chef, offers culinary classes and bazaar tours for small groups in her fully outfitted space.

While you’re in the neighborhood, put local arts on your radar. “Zai Yaşam is a great arts center housed in five buildings,” said Ceylin Türkkan Bilge, creative director of the fashion label Siedrés , in the September 2023 issue of T+L. “There’s a gallery, a library, and a lovely garden where they have jazz concerts in the evenings.” By car, the two spaces are only five minutes apart.

In Yalikavak, said Mina Dilber, an outpost of one of Istanbul’s most prominent art galleries, Pilevneli , has opened up shop in Bodrum. “There’s such a buzz about this place — one of its super-exciting recent exhibitions included work by the cutting-edge digital artist Refik Anadol,” she said. “There’s a great gift shop, too. It’s a must-must-visit!”

Best Shopping

Ceylin Türkkan Bilge recommends the night bazaars “for a taste of the old Bodrum.” “There are two main markets, one around Bodrum Castle and one along the Türkbükü promenade, by the sea in Göltürkbükü,” Bilge says. “You’ll find plenty of bag shops, but also stalls selling ankle bracelets, beaded jewelry, clothing, and handmade leather sandals. A stall called Ipekçe Türkbükü is my favorite for cotton dresses.”

Despite the profusion of luxury brands in the Yalikavak Marina, Dilber favors shops like Misela , which offer a less western fashion perspective. Misela, she says, is “one of Turkey’s leading bag and accessories brands.”

Leleg Living , Yalav-Heckeroth writes, a boutique that is adjacent to the restaurant Leleg, diners can purchase “wares used in the restaurant, as well as wooden furniture, all made by local craftspeople using natural materials.”

On Tuesdays and Fridays, it’s well worth a visit to the Yalikavak Bazaar, one of Bodrum’s many outdoor markets. This traditional bazaar sells an array of fresh spices, olives, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables from local vendors.

Best Restaurants

Brothers Cağrı and Cağlar Bozçağa have established an ambitious destination restaurant in Bodrum at Orfoz , next to the Zeki Müren Arts Museum. The seafood-centric tasting menu features locally caught fish in numerous incarnations and ends each might with a plate of seasonal fruit.

Courtesy of Orfoz Restaurant

Bodrum Müdavim

In Bodrum’s City Center, Bodrum Müdavim offers both a view of the 1400-era Bodrum Castle and a compelling menu dedicated to fresh seafood. But some come just for the Raki; the restaurant boasts one of the city’s best selections of this national drink of Turkey.

The 72-seat Malva , a destination restaurant within Susona Bodrum, leans into micro-local and seasonal cuisine under the skillful knife of head chef Necmi Agac. Biweekly trips to the Yalikavak Bazaar inform the restaurant’s menu, as does the small rooftop garden that grows just steps away from the restaurant’s kitchen.

Limon Gümüşlük

Bilge recommends Limon Gümüşlük , calling it a “particularly stylish and secluded restaurant that serves Turkish meze in a dreamy garden full of vintage furniture.” It’s in Gümüşlük, an area of Bodrum known for its fragrant mandarin groves. Arrive early and grab a table in time for sunset.

Best Time to Visit

Freeartist/Getty Images

Bodrum’s high season is summer, and the majority of the hotels are open from late May though the end of October. The season is busiest in the months of July and August, but the weather stays warm well into early fall–up into the 80s and 90s, in fact. Crowds can be more manageable and prices can be more affordable in the shoulder season, which is worth considering if you’re able to travel outside of the summer months.

How to Get There

Bodrum can be reached by bus, plane, car, and by ferry. From Istanbul, the flight to Bodrum’s Milas–Bodrum Airport takes about one hour. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus provide between five and six daily nonstop flights between the two cities.

There are buses available from Istanbul to Bodrum, but the system is not easy for non-natives to navigate. The ride is also long; it can take close to 10 hours. Hiring a private car is another option, but it is expensive. Flying is a more cost-effective alternative.

Travelers can also reach Bodrum via a ferry from Kos, Greece. The ferry ride takes approximately 30 minutes. Ferries run regularly during the warmer months and cost under $30 each way.

Neighborhoods to Visit

Bodrum’s active City Center is where most tourists will find themselves. Bodrum Castle is here, as are plenty of souvenir shops, cafés, small restaurants, and surprisingly beautiful views of the water. A walk through the narrow streets offers a true feel of this historic city.

nejdetduzen/Getty Images

The Yalikavak Marina offers a slightly more luxurious look at life in Bodrum. Here, you’ll find upscale shopping, destination restaurants, and beach clubs; it’s a look at the good life, yachts and all. But it wouldn’t be Bodrum without a trip to this neighborhood, in all its maximalist glory.

The laid-back fishing enclave of Gümüşlük, also part of Bodrum, has private beaches, waterfront restaurants, and a relaxing vibe that you may not find in some of the busier areas of the city. It’s worth visiting this local-centric area for a sense of how life on the Aegean is lived.

How to Get Around

Bodrum is extremely spread-out, and hiring a taxi to get from one area to the next is necessary. Some areas of Bodrum (like the Marina and the City Center) have taxi stands available, but you may want to consider setting up a hired car in advance with your hotel’s concierge if you plan to go far afield. Taxi drivers typically require cash payment, so come prepared with Turkish lira.

Turkey Travel Blog_Guide To Bodrum Turkey

Türkiye is full of fantastic beach resorts to visit , but some stand out above the rest. There’s a reason why so many famous people are seen floating by in Bodrum Bay aboard an imposing luxury yacht.

It’s because Bodrum is a little bit upmarket, and as such, it’s a sophisticated place to stay for a few days.

Is Bodrum cheap? Not as much as other places, but it’s definitely a fantastic place to go .

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Things To Know About Bodrum Turkey

Bodrum street view in Turkey

Bodrum sits on the southwestern coast of Türkiye , lapped by the waters of the Aegean Sea. It’s a town that is authentic yet upmarket, and you’ll find many rich people wandering around. Of course, it’s also a bustling tourist spot every high season in Bodrum.

Bodrum’s early beginnings were very modest, especially compared to how it is now. These days, you’ll see a massive marina with costly yachts inside it, luxury stores, and white-washed houses along cobbled streets. In the beginning, Bodrum was a fishing village, but in the 1960s, it began to grow. Many professional people from Istanbul bought summer houses in Bodrum. Hence, it gained the name ‘Little Istanbul.’

If you want to go somewhere laid back and beachy , yet you want an extra side order of glamour and sophistication, Bodrum is a good choice. The likes of Ellen, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, and billionaire Russians have been spotted on massive superyachts around the Bodrum coastline .

Best time to visit bodrum, turkey.

It’s going to come as no surprise to learn that Türkiye is hot in the summer months, so if you’re not a fan of soaring temperatures (sometimes over 40 degrees), then July and August aren’t for you. These are the busiest times, and you’ll find very little space around the crowded streets.

However, the shoulder months of May, June, the end of September, and October are beautiful times to visit. You’ll still find very warm temperatures at this time, but the oppressive heat has gone, and it may occasionally rain – although not that often. It’s undoubtedly still beach weather until the middle of October.

Things To Do In Bodrum Peninsula

Sailing Turkish Coast - Gumbet, Bodrum, Turkey

There is plenty to see and do in and around Bodrum. You can choose to enjoy your time chilling out and doing little at all, or you can explore to your heart’s content. Here are a few things to see and do.

1. Enjoy A Boat Trip

The single best way to enjoy the sun and the beautiful coastline is to take a boat trip. The sparkling waters are ideal for swimming, and if you want to lay back on a boat and chill out, there are plenty of boat trip options .

2. Castle Of St Peter

The commanding Castle of St Peter sits with the perfect view over Bodrum town, and visiting it will give you the most amazing views over the bay. The castle was built in 1402 as a defense against invaders. As with most castles, it passed hands several times throughout history, and the Ottomans even built a large mosque inside during their reign.

Today, the castle houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.

If you want to visit a mosque, there are beautiful options around the country.

3. museum of underwater archaeology.

Inside the castle, you will find the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, one of Bodrum’s absolute must-sees. Inside, you’ll find all manner of artifacts related to the underwater world and the many shipwrecks that have been found off the Aegean coastline . However, this isn’t your regular museum; it’s easy to follow and learn, thanks to the multimedia displays and interactive elements.

Be sure to check out the Serce Limani Glass Wreck Room, where you’ll find a Byzantine ship that sunk around the peninsula in 1026.

4. Enjoy Bodrum’s Beaches

Bodrum town doesn’t have a sandy beach; however, just outside the main town, you will find some fantastic beaches that are ideal for kicking back and relaxing. Be sure to head to Turgutreis, Gumbet, and Bitez for some of the most idyllic spots – they all have free and private beaches. There are plenty of tourist facilities around, such as bars and local restaurants.

5. Enjoy Some Watersports

odrum Or Antalya – Antalya Vs Bodrum - Sunset in Bodrum

6. Bodrum Theater

It’s not all beach time! Bodrum has plenty of historical spots to check out, and the theater is one of them. At the peak of its popularity, there would be 13,000 people inside, but these days, the theatre is used for regular events and concerts – see if there is anything on while you’re there. Even if not, it’s a great spot to check out anyway, and the views are nothing short of breathtaking.

7. Bodrum Old Town

Just behind Bodrum Castle, you’ll find the Old Town, with its maze of winding, cobbled streets. It’s a great idea to spend some time exploring around here, stopping at small cafes for tea or coffee, and then heading off to do some shopping at the many souvenir shops . There are also markets where you can purchase all sorts of homemade goods, including leather shoes and jewelry.

8. Bodrum Marina

Bodrum Marina is a really picturesque area that is ideal for romantic walks and sunset views. The boats here are seriously big and extremely expensive, and you’ll find upmarket cafes and restaurants lining the marina where you can stop and have a drink or a meal. This is a particularly great place for seafood.

9. Mausoleum Of Halicarnassus

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus used to be one of the wonders of the world, and it dates back to around 350 BC. While a lot of the original building was damaged in an earthquake, you can still visit the ruins and check out the views. You head up the hill from the marina and walk for around 15 minutes.

10. Bodrum Amphitheater

You can quickly check out the mausoleum and the amphitheater during the same visit, as they’re virtually next to one another. The amphitheater isn’t as severely damaged as the mausoleum, and it really is a window to the past, dating back to around the 6th century BC. At the height of its usage, it would have held around 10,000 people!

11. Sarnic Beach Club

There are some fantastic beach clubs around Bodrum, and some are quite exclusive. Sarnic Beach Club is somewhere in between. Here, you pay a set amount of money as you enter, and your food and drink are all included. You have free access to the beach, sun-loungers, parasols, entertainment, and the water springs and cushioned areas. You’ll have to pay extra for watersports and diving, but it’s a great place to spend the day.

12. Bodrum’s White Windmills

On the short road between Bodrum and Gumbet, you’ll find a series of white stone windmills on the hill. While it might not look like much, the view from that hill is seriously impressive, and these windmills are historic in their own right, having been there for more than 300 years.

13. Zai Bodrum

This is a cute chill-out spot that’s ideal for taking in the view, a little rest and relaxation, and perhaps an excellent spot for a day’s work. This is a park area with swings, cushions, seating, views, and a fantastic restaurant on-site. It’s shaded by trees, so it’s a good spot during the summer, and be sure to check out the food because it’s really delicious.

14. A Boat Trip To Black Island (Karaada Island)

No, the island isn’t black; it’s actually very green, but it’s a fantastic spot to visit on a boat trip. A lot of people come here for the mineral springs as they’re reputed to be suitable for certain health issues, but most simply swim and dive around the crystal clear waters.

15. Take A Day Trip From Bodrum

Vladimir at Ephesus - Hercules Gate

You can visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ephesus in around three hours by bus or car. This is one of the most amazing places to visit in the whole of Turkey, and you’ll definitely need to set off early so you get the most time there. However, do be aware that during the summer months, there is no shade in this huge area, and it can get very crowded.

Ephesus is an ancient city dating back to around the 10th century BC, and the ruins are exceptionally well preserved. It really is like walking through the past.

Greek Island Of Kos, Greece

Ancient ruins on Kos - Things to do on Kos Island

You can easily visit the beautiful island of Kos for the day via ferry, which is only 20 minutes away. You can easily confuse people on your social media by checking in at a restaurant in Kos; they’ll wonder why you’re in Greece and not Turkey!

You can book this trip via an excursion desk in Bodrum itself, or you can book your tickets directly from the port. If you go for the excursion option, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and dropped off again. If you buy your tickets from the port, you’ll need to make your own way there, but it’s only 10 minutes away by taxi.

Brands We Use And Trust

Places to eat in bodrum – restaurants in bodrum.

What To Eat In Turkey - Turkish Food - Lahmacun

Traditional Turkish food is like nothing else on the planet – it’s genuinely delicious . The great thing about Bodrum is that it’s a beautiful blend of both local and international spots. You can find anything you like there, but if you want to try one of the most lauded-after restaurants, here are a couple you should add to your visit list.

Sultan Bahce Restaurant

Set in a beautiful garden, this restaurant is the perfect spot for al-fresco dining with a sophisticated edge. The menu is extensive, but every dish is perfect. From seafood to kebabs and pizza, you’ll find everything you might fancy here, but be sure to try the freshly caught fish – it’s cooked on a BBQ, and it’s the most delicious you’ll find around Bodrum.

Antik Akdeniz

A very tourist-friendly Turkish restaurant, this is the ideal spot to try traditional food while in Bodrum. I like your blog but dearly wish you would be more careful about promoting activities that are abusive to animals. The camels are abused and live in terrible conditions. They are tethered day and night and only allowed to walk free with the heavy cargo of tourists on their back. There is widespread camel abuse all over the world so please do your research and stop promoting animal cruelty.

Huh, because I said camels beach? That is the name of the beach. What can I do about it? And FYI, I always advocate for animals. I never go to or recommend zoo’s in any place and ask people not to ride donkeys in Greece… https://www.chasingthedonkey.com/why-you-should-not-ride-donkeys-in-santorini-donkeys/

What about Chasing the Donkey…? That’s just cruel :)

Located on the southwestern coast of Türkiye, Bodrum is a stunning destination that combines ancient history and culture with the beauty of the crystal-clear Aegean Sea.

Bodrum is a great place to visit off-season. You can get  flights to Bodrum with Jet2 from London Stansted that take just 3.5 hours, making it the perfect short autumn weekend break!

Bodrum Travel Guide: A Summary

Short on time? Here’s an overview of this Bodrum travel guide so you can grab your information and go!

Me swimming in the sea in Bodrum

Why you should visit Bodrum

Bodrum is such an underrated destination to visit in Türkiye. Along with the stunning coastal towns of Antalya, Ölüdeniz and Marmaris, Bodrum is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

Bodrum is an ideal place for  couples holidays with Jet2holidays , especially for those wanting to relax on the beach, sunbathe in the hot weather, eat tasty local food and learn about some of Türkiye’s ancient history.

Along with classic holiday activities such as swimming, snorkelling and boat trips, it’s also perfect for those who want to hike and get outside . There are plenty of hiking trails in the surrounding mountains, and some of the viewpoints are just incredible!

In the evenings, if you want to experience the Turkish nightlife, Bodrum has it all. From traditional Turkish restaurants and bars to late-night clubs, Bodrum is a great place to party and unwind.

However, it’s easy enough to avoid all of this if you’d rather relax, sunbathe, hike and swim!

Sunset in Bodrum

How many days should you spend in Bodrum?

Four days in Bodrum would be a minimum, especially if you’re travelling from the UK and getting a 3.5-hour flight.

In my opinion, the main sites and attractions of Bodrum can be explored in 4-5 days, but if you’d like to spend some days on the beach relaxing and sunbathing, a 7-day trip to Bodrum would be perfect.

What to do in Bodrum

The thing that surprised us the most about visiting Bodrum was how much there was to do! Our days were filled with activities, and I still feel like I would have wanted to have done and seen more .

Here are some of my best recommendations when it comes to visiting Bodrum for the first time!

1. Visit Bodrum Castle and the Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum

One of the first things we did when we arrived was to head to Bodrum Castle and the Underwater Archeology Museum. Both are located in the same place, so it’s easy to pair the two activities together!

You’ll buy a ticket at the main entrance (near Bodrum Marina) and have unlimited time to walk the castle grounds and read about Bodrum’s history. As we had a local guide with us, we were able to learn even more in-depth about Bodrum’s past, including the way the castle was used to protect the area.

After walking around the forts and looking at the views of Bodrum from the highest points of the Castle, head into the Underwater Museum. There are shipwrecks, artefacts and types of equipment on display that are over 1000 years old!

🍃 If you’re visiting Bodrum Castle, I highly recommend hiring a local guide. Not only does this support local communities and tourism, but you’re able to learn on a deeper level about the history of Bodrum from someone who has lived there all of their life. This is an unmatched insight – even the internet can’t give you viewpoints like this!

2. Walk along Bodrum Marina

One of our favourite spots in Bodrum was the marina. With hundreds of beautiful, tall yachts lined up along the port, with extravagant restaurants and bars overlooking the water, it’s the perfect place for an afternoon stroll or lunch stop.

We loved the Marina Yacht Club restaurant, as it’s perfectly situated on the port. I sat and ate my creamy seafood tagliatelle whilst admiring the views. There’s even live music in the evenings, so you can check it out at any time of day!

🍃 There are also some great shops and markets at the marina run by locals. Buying gifts and souvenirs from smaller businesses helps to support the local economy (and they’re gorgeous !)

3. Experience the Bodrum nightlife

Now, I know this might not be for everyone, but bear with me. Bodrum nightlife can be crazy, loud and hectic, but it can also be chilled, enjoyable and relaxed. It all depends on where you go, and what you want from your night!

If you want to party the night away, I recommend heading to the centre of Bodrum, especially around the market area. There are plenty of bars and clubs to choose from, with most packing out from 10 p.m. onwards. We politely declined shots of Raki as we snuck off to bed at 11…

But, if you still want to enjoy Bodrum’s nightlife and don’t want to be dancing on tables , I recommend the Gümüşlük area. It’s a little further from the centre of Bodrum, but it had such a great evening atmosphere that was better suited for two thirty-year-olds going on ninety.

It has a late-night market and an artsy and eclectic vibe. There were restaurants along the water with live music and entertainment, and we sat here for hours whilst drinking Efes beer and enjoying the Turkish culture!

Gumusluk

4. Visit the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

Did you know there’s an Ancient Wonder of the World in Bodrum? We didn’t either!

Visiting the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Halicarnassus is the ancient name of Bodrum) was one of our favourite parts of our trip. We spent over an hour walking around the ancient ruins that were once a tomb built between 353 and 350 BC.

A structure that was once over 40ft tall now remains as rubble, due to an earthquake that hit the area between the 12th and 15th Century.

However, some of the original artwork is still in place, as well as some of the podiums. Some of the Mausoleum can also be found in the British Museum in London.

It’s worth a visit, and not many people can say they’ve visited an Ancient Wonder of the World!

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

5. Head to the Ancient Amphitheatre

There’s a lot of history in Bodrum, isn’t there?!

Another incredible activity is to head further into Bodrum and up to the ancient amphitheatre.

Dating back to the 4th century BC, the theatre was later developed by the Romans. Ultimately, it was restored to become a 13,000-seat theatre which was the home of entertainment in the area.

With free admission, this is a perfect afternoon activity in Bodrum!

The ancient amphitheatre

6. Go on a Gulet Cruise

Have you ever heard of a Gulet cruise? We hadn’t either!

Gulet sailboats are traditional to Turkiye, and enjoying a day at sea whilst in Bodrum is a great way to spend the day!

We boarded our sailboat early in the morning and spent the day swimming in the crystal clear water, jumping off the side of the boat, snorkelling, eating fresh seafood, relaxing on deck and drinking Turkish coffee.

It was a day I’ll always remember!

You can pick from different durations of Gulet cruises, for example, an entire day or just for a few hours. You can also choose whether you’d prefer to enjoy it privately or with other people (and we did see a few party boats!)

Gulet cruise in Bodrum

7. Visit the Bodrum windmill viewpoint

If you’re in Bodrum town centre, I recommend taking a slight detour and heading up to the windmill viewpoint.

Whilst the windmills are no longer in use, it’s a beautiful, panoramic spot to look over the entire coastline of Bodrum. There’s even a restaurant at the top to grab a drink or some food and soak up the views for a little longer.

Bodrum windmills

8. Try local Turkish food and drink

It’s not a holiday without trying new food and drink!

We loved trying the new foods recommended to us by our guide, especially as my partner, Tom, is a huge seafood fan! We didn’t have many meals that included your typical Turkish cuisines (kebabs, shish etc), as Bodrum is so well-known for its fresh and tasty seafood.

My personal favourite was Turkish coffee – something I’d never tried before. Made over a fire, the strong coffee is a popular post-meal drink in Turkish culture, and it’s a tradition we adapted to quickly!

We walked away with a new Turkish coffee mug which now sits on our living room shelf, just waiting for its first brew. I’ll let you know when that day finally arrives!

Getting around Bodrum

Getting around Bodrum will depend on where you’re staying. Most of the hotels are either in the main city centre or further out towards the coast.

If you’ve booked a holiday to Bodrum with Jet2 holidays, the resorts you’ll be staying at will often provide transport. Our hotel had linked taxi drivers and shuttles so you could get to and from different areas easily.

You can also hire a car or board the local bus. Just be sure to check with your hotel where the bus stops so you can make the right travel arrangements (and not get stuck somewhere!)

Local markets in Bodrum

Where to stay in Bodrum

As holidays to Bodrum are so popular (with both Brits and locals), there are plenty of hotels and resorts to choose from.

We stayed at the beautiful  Jet2holidays Kefaluka Resort , which was around a 35-minute drive from the main centre of Bodrum. This didn’t affect our plans, but it depends on what you want from your trip. We also liked having closer access to some of the other nearby towns, like Gumusluk.

With a balcony view over the ocean, two giant pools, unlimited breakfast, a waterpark, a private beach, evening entertainment, a spa and comfortable rooms, we loved our stay at Kefaluka, and would love to return in the future!

It’s nice to live in luxury before returning to reality back home…

Getting to Bodrum

Getting to Bodrum from London Stanstead is straightforward. When flying with Jet2, you can check in online and everything is taken care of. You’ll just need to check in your bags if you have checked luggage!

We arrived at the airport around 2 hours before our afternoon flight, cruised through security and even had time to grab some pre-flight food.

The flight time from London Stanstead to Bodrum is listed as 4 hours, but it usually takes around 3 and a half hours. This goes by surprisingly quickly!

Currently, Jet2 have flights from all over the UK to Bodrum, departing on different days of the week. This includes destinations such as Glasgow, Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester.

Jet2 Plane

Arriving in Bodrum

When you arrive in Bodrum, most hotels and resorts are at least 1 hour away from the airport. This means you’ll either need to arrange a transfer or driver (which is usually included in your Jet2 Holiday).

When you’ve collected your luggage, you’ll meet your driver at the arrivals gate. Most drivers will have a written sign marked ‘Jet2 Holidays’ or your name, depending on the type of holiday you’ve booked.

Bodrum Travel Guide- The Best Things to Do in Bodrum, Turkey

If you’re looking for a beautiful seaside resort in Turkey, offering great dining, brilliant hotels and a great selection of things to do, Bodrum is a great place to go in Turkey. I spent a weekend here at the start of a two week Turkey itinerary, and it was the most perfect place to start a trip around the country.

Bodrum has previously been known as a mass-market tourist resort, but I was pleasantly surprised that these are located more out-of-town and the centre of Bodrum consisted of charming streets, a relaxing harbour area and lovely markets.

If you have plans to spend a week in Bodrum, you will find plenty of activities to do and attractions to see. But if you only have one day or a weekend in Bodrum, you’ll still get a real feel for the place and will see the majority of its sites in the town centre and I would recommend including Bodrum on any itinerary around Turkey.

So here’s my guide to some of the best things to do in Bodrum, as well as some other essential information such as where to stay in Bodrum and how to get around. Hopefully you will find this blog post useful in planning your own trip to Bodrum!

what to do in Bodrum

Bodrum Travel Guide: Essential things to know

When is the best time to go to bodrum.

Peak season in Turkey stretches from around May to September, similar to other European destinations. I visited in the high season in Bodrum and didn’t find it to be too busy or hectic. The daytime temperature was hot, around 33 Celsius or so and it was blue skies and sunny. In the evening in Bodrum, it was still very warm.

Bodrum Travel Guide

Getting around Bodrum

The old town, including the marina of Bodrum, is small enough to walk around on foot easily. In fact, much of it is pedestrianised. Even the bus station is walking distance (10 minutes) from the town centre. If your hotel is just out of town, it is highly likely it will have a shuttle to the centre of Bodrum.

Arriving in Bodrum airport (Milas Mugla airport) is fairly simple, although the drive from Bodrum airport to the centre of town is around 40 minutes.

The Havas Bus service offers frequent and straight forward transfer buses between the two (costing 10 TL), or another option is to use a taxi, this is likely to cost about 130 TL. I actually pre-booked my transfer with GetYourGuide, which was pretty efficient and dropped me at my accommodation in Bodrum. Book your airport transfer here.

Where to stay in Bodrum?

There are so many hotel options in and around Bodrum, it can be quite hard to pick. As I was travelling solo in Turkey, I chose to stay in a hostel in the town centre. I stayed at the Eskici hostel, which was just metres from the beach. It offered a chill out pool and a really cool relaxed vibe.

You can check rates for the excellent Eskici hostel here at Booking.com

Other good value hostels and hotels in Bodrum include:

  • Istankoy Hotel
  • Asmin Hotel Bodrum
  • 7. Art Feslegen Hotel

However, Bodrum is also known for some spectacular luxury hotels, such as the Mandarin Oriental and The Bodrum EDITION.

You check prices for these, and several other top hotels in Bodrum below:

  • Mandarin Oriental

  • LUX* Bodrum Resort & Residences

Wander its charming streets.

Bodrum Travel Guide

Bodrum’s town centre consists of many little laneways, all offering charming experiences and unusual street art. Wandering around the quaint town centre of Bodrum, I’d keep coming across corners of tumbling bougainvillea and gorgeous wall climbers, tucked away from main paths.

The Turkish people are hugely passionate and patriotic, and the Turkish flag is everywhere, adorning many buildings’ walls. You will also see the ‘evil eye’, meant to ward off evil spirits in many places too. You could say it is kind of like Turkey’s national symbol.

A very pleasant afternoon or longer can be spent exploring the streets of Bodrum. There are many Instagram-worthy photo stops in Bodrum, but thankfully, not too many photoshoots happening at once!

Sample Turkish cuisine at one of Bodrum’s best restaurants or cafes

Like many European seaside towns, the waterfront and the marina area in Bodrum is lined with great restaurants, bars and cafes. Some are really quaint and romantic, and some more lively. But on the whole, I was really amazed with how beautiful they were. You feel charmed to enter!

Where to eat Bodrum

One restaurant I particularly liked was Kortan 365 on the waterfront in Bodrum. The building dates back over 450 years and it’s really like stepping back in time, however I was surprised to learn it turns into a lively evening spot after dark!

Where to eat Bodrum

Turkish cuisine is one of my favourites. I highly recommend borek, which is white cheese in pastry and aubergine salad topped with yoghurt.

I tried a Turkish coffee with keen anticipation, but realised it’s not for me.

Other brilliant places to eat in Bodrum include:

  • Avlu Bistro is tucked away and offers a wonderfully romantic setting
  • Annalivia a popular Turkish restaurant offering fantastic views over the bay
  • Memedof Fish Restaurant is one of the fine dining restaurants in Bodrum, and offers some of the best seafood in town.

Visit Bodrum Castle and learn about the area’s history

The castle in Bodrum dates back to 1402 and is one of the town’s main tourist attractions. Bodrum Castle offers amazing views over the town and the turquoise Aegean Sea. It is also home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, housing one of the most important collections in the world. The castle has recently re-opened following a €25 million restoration project. Book your city sightseeing tour here.

Join a boat trip in Bodrum

Some of Bodrum’s best beaches are further out in the bay and can be reached by boat.

Gulets, the traditional Turkish style of boats, line the harbour. You can also sail the Greek Islands of Kos or Rhodes easily from Bodrum, which is a cool day trip.

Bodrum Travel Guide

GetYourGuide offer hundreds of day trips from Bodrum and excursions by land or sea to exciting attractions nearby. I’ve selected a couple of great tours here:

  • Full Day Orak Island Boat Trip
  • Pirate Boat Trip from Bodrum

Wander the artisan shops

The shopping in Bodrum is surprisingly good. I found I wanted to buy so many knick-knacks, clothes and sandals. In fact, Bodrum is famous for its excellent quality leather sandals! I thought the beautiful shell and jewellery stands were particularly eye-catching and I wanted to buy everything.

Shopping in Bodrum, Turkey

Soak up the fun nightlife

The atmosphere in Bodrum is surprisingly lively and welcoming. The town centre didn’t feel tacky, although I’m aware it sometimes has this reputation. I think a lot of revellers stay in their resorts or bars nearer their hotels maybe.

Bodrum Travel Guide

Experience a hammam

Doing a traditional Turkish hammam is a must-do at some point during your Turkey holiday, and where better than Bodrum! There’s several hammams in town, but why not go with a local guide who’ll take you to the baths, and talk you through the experience! Book a tour to a traditional local hammam here.

Mid-September Is My Favorite Time to Visit Bodrum

Coastal villages, chill beach days, and endless mezzes..

bodrum travel review

Everyone knows that person who spends weeks sniffing around travel blogs, going deep into Tripadvisor rabbit holes, collecting Google docs from friends of friends, and creating  A Beautiful Mind –style spreadsheets to come up with the best  vacations  and itineraries possible. In this recurring series, we find those people who’ve done all the work for you and have them walk us through a particularly wonderful, especially well-thought-out vacation they took that you can actually steal.

Mina Dilber , founder and creative director of Turkish lifestyle brand Anim , has spent summers in Bodrum from an early age and makes it back there a few times each year. “Ideally in the beginning of May or mid-September, right before and after the crowds take over,” she says, adding that the sun’s out nearly every day and you can even expect high 80s going into fall. A short one-hour-and-change flight from Istanbul, where Dilber is based, Bodrum is situated in the heart of the Turkish Riviera, otherwise known as the Turquoise Coast. It’s become a somewhat less obvious alternative to places like Mykonos, but is similar in the sense that all of the beaches are at beach clubs. There’s a lot of beach-club hopping , to be sure, but also tons of swimming in the Aegean sea shaded by olive trees and snacking on traditional mezze platters. “Last summer, we had some friends from all over the world travel to Turkey — coming from London and Los Angeles — so we could show them our special slice of paradise,” Mina says. After a few days taking them around her hometown of Istanbul, they departed for four days in Bodrum. “It’s fun to see familiar places through the lens of outsiders.”

9 a.m.: Check into the hotel

We flew from Istanbul to Bodrum, which is a little over an hour. When we landed at Bodrum airport, I had already arranged a pick up earlier with a reliable car company, Bodrum VIP Transfers , so they were there waiting at baggage claim with a sign. After about a 45-minute drive, we finally arrived at Amanruya ( Göltürkbükü, Demir Mevkii, Bülent Ecevit Cd., 4848 3) and checked into the hotel. I have stayed here three times before and am always mesmerized by the whole ambiance of the property. It’s so calm compared to the sceney beach clubs that make up much of Bodrum and so vast and breathtaking. I would also recommend Bella Sombra and No81 Hotel as they’re great, more affordable options in Bodrum. After a quick change in our rooms, we took buggies provided by the hotel to the beach on the property.

bodrum travel review

1 p.m.: Eat lahmacun by the sea

We spent the afternoon relaxing by the water. It’s a super-calm vibe here compared to other beach clubs in Bodrum. We sipped on a glass of cold white wine while munching on lahmacun, traditional Middle Eastern flatbread topped with meat, veggies, and herbs. It was delicious.

bodrum travel review

7 p.m.: Boat over to Macakizi for the evening

We took a speedboat provided by Amanruya to Macakizi ( Göltürkbükü, Narçiçeği Sokak, 48400 ), one of my favorite hotels and beach clubs in Bodrum. Captain Musa picked us up in his super-sweet and speedy boat for the 20-minute ride there. We lounged by the water a bit, then got some margaritas at the bar — they’re so good here. The music at Macakizi also always makes me so happy. Eventually, we made our way upstairs to dinner. The seafood spaghetti is one of the best dishes here.

Disclaimer: Bodrum is not cheap. To access any of the beach clubs in Bodrum during the high season, there’s a minimum spend. At Macakizi, the minimum spend during May through September is 140 euro per sunbed, but the food and drinks are so good, I think it’s worth it. I highly recommend staying at Macakizi if you want to be a part of the action as it has a fun scene during the day with a cool, young crowd.

bodrum travel review

10 a.m.: Eat a traditional Turkish breakfast

We woke up and headed to breakfast at Asmali Cardak ( Yalıkavak, No:52 48400, Kayacık Cd., 48990 ). They have the best traditional Turkish breakfast with a variety of fresh pastries and an array of crazy delicious jams. My favorite is always the Bodrum Mandarin jam. The Turkish breakfast consists of an assortment of cheeses, like feta and eski kasar, and tomato and cucumber salad and olives. Honey and kaymak (like a soft cream cheese that you spread on bread) is probably the best part of a Turkish breakfast. Also Turkish tea! Asmali Cardak’s super-cute ambiance within a small garden with shabby tables makes you feel almost at home.

bodrum travel review

1 p.m.: Have a delicious Italian lunch

We took a 35-minute cab ride to Bodrum Loft ( Göltürkbükü, 48483 ) for a very chill beach day. Bodrum Loft is a villa compound on the hills of Golturkbuku, with amazing views as well as amazing waters, that people can rent throughout the summer. We visited because a friend was staying there, though it’s also open to guests not staying on the compound as there are various restaurants on site. The beach is so calm that you want to stay there all day. Also Paper Moon , one of the best Italian restaurants from Istanbul, has a restaurant on the property, so we had some delicious salad and pizza under the sea breeze. Nearby, Naru ( Gölköy Mahallesi, Gökburun Mevkii, 48400 ) is a new addition to the Bodrum dining scene and worth checking out if you’re in the area for lunch or dinner.

bodrum travel review

5 p.m. Visit a gallery before dinner

We went back to the hotel for a quick change and started getting ready for the night. We took a 30-minute cab to Pilevneli Gallery ( Yalıkavak, 6047. Sk No: 7/A, 48990 ), one of Istanbul’s pioneer galleries up in the hills of Yalikavak. It’s located in a beautiful villa with great views, featuring artworks by contemporary Turkish and international artists, and is host to ever-changing exhibitions in the summertime. (This summer, Wim Delvoye had a solo show there.) After a quick stroll through the gallery, we stopped for dinner at an Istanbul-based restaurant called Sisko Perihan ( Pilevneli Yalikavak Mah 47sk No:7/A ). We shared a terrific Turkish mezze feast while Turkish music played in the background — the perfect combination.

bodrum travel review

10 a.m.: Head back to our favorite beach club for the day

We hopped in a cab and headed back to Macakizi — this time to chill around the beach, have some lunch, and check out their amazing boutique, 74ESCAPE , curated by Istanbul 74 . We strolled down through the mimosa trees while the sea breeze welcomed us at the entrance of Macakizi. After making our way down the steps that weave through the property, we arrived at the beach. The Macakizi staff is always the most genuine and sweet and so welcoming. Since it was a really hot day, we had to get into the water every 20 minutes. We treated ourselves to the best Bloody Mary any of us have ever had and ordered another lahmacun to share.

bodrum travel review

3 p.m. Walk through Turkbuku for a scoop of mandarin ice cream

We eventually made our way back up the stairs to check out the boutique. From beachwear to jewelry, bags, ceramics and more, the curation is fantastic. The ambiance is also great, surrounded by greenery and interiors swathed in rattan. We did a little shopping, then followed the path to exit the property and walked five minutes to Bella Sombra Hotel ( Bağarası Mahallesi, Bağarası Cd. No:24, 48400 ) for drinks at their bar. This boutique hotel combines the sweet essence of Bodrum with a Tuscany kind of feeling.

We made one last visit before dinner: a pit stop at Dogal Dondurma in the Türkbükü area ( Göltürkbükü, Liman Cd. No:55, 48483 ) and had a bite of their amazing mandarin ice cream. Türkbükü, which is walking distance from Bella Sombra, is a really nice coastal village with lots of nice shops and seafood restaurants along the port, like Garo’s Restaurant, which I’ve been coming to since I was young. We then walked through Türkbükü Market, the open-air market that’s open daily, selling a variety of items, from pottery to jewelry to homeware and other unique souvenirs to bring home. After a little shopping, we headed back to our hotel, which took about 20 minutes by cab.

7 p.m. Have a seaside dinner in Gumusluk

After freshening up at the hotel, we took a 40-minute drive over to Mimoza Restaurant ( Yalı Mavkii No 104, Gumusluk 48400 ) in Gümüşlük, near the water. Since this is a longer drive, we hired a driver from the same company we used on the first day. After a long way with some bumpy roads, we arrived at Gümüşlük, one of the sweetest bays and towns of Bodrum, surrounded by local craftsmen shops where they sell everything from handmade jewelry to hand-embroidered textiles to ceramics. This town feels a bit more authentic than Türkbükü with its sleepy fishing village and scarcity of beach clubs. You come here to stroll through the charming town and escape the bustling scene you’ll find in other parts of Bodrum. After popping into some shops, we finally arrived at Mimoza, a place that makes your heart warm with its colors, people, and unreal sunset. Colorful light fixtures were hanging all over the restaurant and the food was great — literally all the mezzes. Then Turkish music started playing a little later at night, and we found ourselves dancing around the tables!

10 a.m.: Get in a morning stretch

Since it was our last day, we decided to chill around the beautiful pool at the hotel and have a little bit of breakfast and coffee there. We ventured up to their yoga studio with an incredible view for a morning stretch to kick start our day.

1 p.m.: Share ceviche by the beach

Right after breakfast and pool time we went to Lucca Beach & Restaurant ( Göltürkbükü, Cennet Koyu Cd 314. Sok No: 12/1, 48483 Bodrum/Muğla ). Lucca is by far the coolest new spot in Bodrum. Originally from Istanbul, they now have the best beach spot along with a huge restaurant. Their appetizers are great to share and the ceviche is my favorite.

6 p.m.: Watch the Bodrum sunset one last time

After a long day of lounging, it was time for some drinks. We took a 15-minute cab to Limon Gumusluk ( Gümüşlük, Kardak Sk. No: 7, 48970 ). Limon Cafe claims to have the “most delicious sunset out there,” and I would have to agree. I can’t decide if the sunset or the cocktails are better. They serve some of their best cocktails in big glass jars. I ordered the Satsuma Witch, a margarita-adjacent cocktail with citrus fruits. It was the perfect combination of acidic and refreshing.

8 p.m.: Pick up rattan souvenirs before heading home

After the sun set, we took a ten-minute cab to one of my favorite places in Bodrum: Derekoy Lokantasi ( Dereköy, Derekoy Yolu No:133, 48960 ) for our final dinner. Located in a beautiful garden, this place has a relaxed atmosphere. They serve Mediterranean food and Turkish mezzes with a twist. The sailor’s pie and crispy chickpeas are really good. After dinner, we strolled around the property. Right near Derekoy restaurant is another one of my favorite stores, called Leleg Living ( Dereköy, Derekoy Yolu No:133, 48960 ). They sell home furniture and mostly rattan accessories, like wooden cooking utensils and raffia poufs and décor — nearly everything is made from natural materials. After a few days in Bodrum, it’s the perfect place to pick up some mementos to bring a little slice of this paradise back home with you.

Bodrum travel guide

What to do, where to stay, and why you’ll love it.

The harbour in Bodrum

B odrum lies at the southernmost point of the Aegean coast and is a swish playground for rich, famous and beautiful Turks — as well the millions of tourists that touchdown each summer. Its sparkling marina, whitewashed houses and laid-back vibe has been immortalised in countless songs since it boomed from a small fishing village into a busy resort. The metamorphosis began in the 1960s, when Istanbul’s writers and artists began using it as their bolthole — and it’s still known as “little Istanbul” due to the number of city-dwellers with second homes there. The town itself, while still lovely, has become rather commercialised in recent decades, with huge hotels blighting parts of the area. However, the atmosphere is more chi-chi on the other side of town; the wealth gathers around the yacht harbour, and you’ll find the real glamour that Bodrum is renowned for out in the far reaches of the peninsula, where a dramatic coastline hosts hidden cove beaches and secret islets are dotted with detox retreats, designer bars and luxury hotels.

Spend a day wandering through the maze of alleys that make up Bodrum’s old town, once the place where artisans sold their wares, and now where souvenir shops and fish restaurants will try and tempt you inside. It’s easy to forget that you’re so close to the sea when you’re deep in the town’s web of shaded passageways — expect to be suddenly reminded with a glimpse of a bolt of blue through a gap in the buildings. The town’s main landmark is the Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century, on the site of an even older castle. A visit will teach you about the history of this long-contested corner of the world; during the Ottoman era its chapel was converted into a mosque with an added minaret. Make time too for the adjoining underwater archaeology museum — it’s stuffed with ancient shipwrecks discovered in the Aegean.

A day trip by boat will whisk you to Catal island, a mile off the coast at the end of the Bodrum peninsula. Climb to the top of one of the three hills that give it its name — “fork island” — for panoramic views over the mainland.

Where to stay

Planning to bed down in town? Stick to the area around the marina — it’s made up of tempting boutique hotels in traditional Bodrum houses. For low-cost package holiday, try the near by Gumbet district for all-inclusives as well as a lively strip of clubs and bars. Families will be better served in Bitez , which is less frenetic and has great water sports on offer. Turgutreis, a 30-minute drive from Bodrum, is another good base — it’s relaxed and secluded, with a large population of British expats.

For the famed Bodrum glamour, try Yalikavak and Turkbuku: two of the most exclusive parts of the peninsula. A landmark in the former is the ruins of three of the distinctive stone windmills that this part of Turkey is famous for, while its marina is crammed with glitzy restaurants. Gumusluk has more of a bohemian artistic vibe and hosts an annual music festival.

Food and drink

With this region being a magnet for the international jetset, it’s only befitting that it’s home to some of Turkey’s finest restaurants, serving Turkish and global cuisine with plenty of pizzazz.

Palmarina in Yalikavak is the place to head for an upmarket meal where you can guess the costs of the mega-yachts as you tuck in. Local dishes have a heavy Greek flavour, unsurprising given its location — the island of Kos is visible on a clear day and can be reached in 45 minutes by boat . Expect lots of fresh grilled vegetables drizzled in olive oil, yoghurt dips and fish. Desserts are a less healthy affair, but there are a few regional specialities worth the calories. Sarayli — the dessert “of the palace” — is as rich as you would expect, a baklava-esque concoction of flaky pastry, honey and nuts, but with the addition of sherbet stuffing. Katmer offers the same mouth-watering combination of flavours, but comes assembled as flat pockets. Both can be served with kaymak, a type of clotted cream that is also sublime when combined with honey at the end of a Turkish breakfast.

There are several international festivals in Bodrum, and the biggest is for ballet, held in July and August, followed by a Baroque festival in September. Both use the town’s best features as venues — you could watch a show at Bodrum Castle or the amphitheatre of the ancient city of Halicarnassus. There are also a number of other dance and music festivals throughout the year, and a biennale to appease art lovers.

Head to the Zeki Muren Arts Museum to be introduced to modern Turkish music. It’s dedicated to Muren, a singer who unites every Turk, and whose vocals are the soundtrack to most evenings spent in traditional Turkish mezze restaurants. When Muren died in 1996, he left all his assets to Turkish educational charities, and in return they turned his house into this museum, replete with a bronze statue of him, microphone in hand.

Know before you go

The local currency is the lira, and international cards are accepted everywhere. If you choose self-catered accommodation, familiarise yourself with Migros, Turkey’s answer to Tesco, for affordable picnic supplies. Be prepared to bargain at Bodrum’s bazaars; vendors expect a stiff negotiation with every sale.

This part of Turkey is extremely liberal, bar the fact that topless sunbathing is illegal, and you can wear anything unless you want to enter a mosque (opt for something that goes over the knees and bring a jacket to cover your shoulders). Don’t be tempted to take home any relics you might come across — it’s a crime to do so, and Brits have been landed in prison for it. If you do find anything old-looking, hand it in to the authorities. Be careful when driving; the roads are narrow and winding around the coast, and Turks like to drive fast.

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BODRUM, TURKEY

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

The Bodrum Peninsula sits on Turkey’s southwest coast on the Aegean Sea. It is easily accessible from Istanbul and has long been a summer destination for wealthy Turkish travelers.

In recent years, Bodrum has become an international hot spot for celebrities and the jet-setting elite who flock here in the summer months to vacation on the beautiful Turkish Riviera.

Bodrum offers an array of luxury resorts, world-class dining, fun beach clubs, and excellent shopping, all set around the crystal blue Aegean Sea.

In July, I spent seven days in Bodrum celebrating my birthday with a group of friends. We lived like kings and queens for the week: We stayed at the best hotels, dined at the best restaurants, and partied at the best beach clubs.

Based on my experience, I put together this ultimate guide to Bodrum to help you make the most of your visit to this little slice of paradise.

10 Things To Do In Bodrum

The Bodrum peninsula is about 250 square miles. While many people visit to relax and party here in the summer there is a lot to do and see. Here are 10 of the best things to do in Bodrum .

1) Explore Bodrum By Yacht

There’s no better way to explore the coastline of Bodrum than by yacht. There are dozens of islands and over 100 inlets around the Bodrum Peninsula providing an array of beautiful spots to explore by boat.

During my birthday week, we rented a gorgeous 115ft yacht for the day from Gulet Bookers . We had 15 people in our group but the yacht could accommodate up to 60 people and had plenty of room for lounging, beautiful estate rooms, and all the water toys you could want on board.

The crew was excellent. They kept our drinks filled and served us a wonderful sunset dinner. We swam in private bays, danced, and did an excursion to a seaside bar at an amazing new hotel, Bodrum Loft , which has killer views and delicious handcrafted cocktails that would rival any of the top bars in the world.

This was by far my favorite day in Bodrum and I would highly recommend booking a boat through Gulet Bookers . They offer luxury charters at reasonable prices in Turkey, Greece, and Croatia.

2) Stay At Macakizi Hotel

Macakizi Hotel made Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List in 2021 and after spending a blissful week here in July, it’s easy to see why. It’s hard to explain how much I love Macakizi Hotel – it exudes a hip, old-world, unpretentious charm.

Built into a hillside, Macakizi is situated on the north side of the Bodrum peninsula, at the very end of a beautiful bay in the charming fishing village of Türkbükü, just a 50-minute drive (or 2o minute water taxi ride) from Bodrum Airport and a 40-minute drive from downtown Bodrum.

The property opened in the late 1970s and is richly landscaped with walking paths that meander through trees, vines, bushes, and vibrant flowers. The basic rooms are small, and very expensive in the summer months (expect to pay over 1,000 euros a night), but you don’t stay at Macakizi for the rooms. You stay here for the gorgeous property and all its luxury amenities including seaside lounge chairs that are reserved daily for guests, and the excellent concierge service.

The focal point of the hotel is a vibrant beach club with a lively beach bar, and an over-water deck jetting out from the rocks into the Aegean Sea. Two of my favorite days during our trip were spent lounging here, taking in gorgeous views of Türkbükü Bay, listening to music, drinking rosé wine, reading a book, swimming in the sea, and chatting with other hotel patrons.

Macakizi Hotel has an excellent restaurant and the breakfast, which is included in your stay, is the best breakfast I’ve had at any hotel. Fresh local tomatoes, cucumber, olives, fresh fruit, freshly baked bread, an array of fresh local cheeses, locally made yogurt, and made-to-order egg dishes accompanied with fresh vegetable juices and coffee. Did I mention everything is fresh?

3) Türkbükü Boardwalk

The little fishing village of Türkbükü embodies the overall boho-chic spirit of Bodrum and is definitely worth visiting. Türkbükü has excellent hotels so it’s also a great area to stay.

Macakizi Hotel and No:81 Hotel (where our friends stayed) are both located on Türkbükü Bay. Macakizi is at the end of the bay where the boardwalk ends and No:81 Hotel is right next door so during our stay we were able to walk from our hotels to the boardwalk to dine and shop.

The boardwalk wraps around Türkbükü Bay, a beautiful little bay that is dotted with yachts and sailboats. Along the boardwalk, there are an array of great restaurants, beach bars, and boutiques selling clothing, jewelry, home goods, and souvenirs. It’s a charming place to spend a few hours shopping, exploring, and taking photos.

4) Beach Clubs

Bodrum is home to an array of luxury beach clubs, where you can dine, lounge, drink, and dance while listening to some of Turkey’s most popular DJs. Here are a few of the best beach clubs that I personally experienced during our Bodrum trip and loved.

These beach clubs are lively and have great DJs that draw a fun crowd. In Bodrum, beach club patrons tend to arrive around 2pm and have lunch, and then by 4pm everyone is up drinking and dancing.

  • Momo Bodrum – Beautiful spot to hang for the day, about two miles from Yalikavak Marina, in the same bay as The Bodrum EDITION . DJ has everyone up dancing by 4pm. Best day to book this beach club is Sunday.
  • Lucca Beach – Mandarin Oriental’s beach club, chic upscale spot for lunch, lounging and swimming, you can take a water taxi from Türkbükü directly to Mandarin Oriental – they have their own private dock. Everyone will be up dancing by late afternoon when the DJ comes on. Best day to book this beach club is Saturday.
  • Macakizi Beach Club – The beach club at Macakizi hotel goes off every day with great DJ music and a lively beach bar scene from 4pm-8pm, dies down for dinner from 8pm-11pm, then picks back up again until 2am. Macakizi has its own private dock so you can take a water taxi here if you aren’t staying in Türkbükü.
  • Before Sunset – If you like to dance, check out Before Sunset. They serve great cocktails in a beautiful seaside setting and a big party crowd with notable DJs, light shows and a massive dance area.

Bodrum has excellent shopping that is very affordable. Most of the beach clubs have pop-up shops and most of the hotels also have little boutiques on property where you can buy chic swimsuits, beach cover-ups, jewelry, and shoes as well as dresses and clothes for going out at night.

If you want to shop for more affordable, locally-made clothing and souvenirs head to the Türkbükü  Boardwalk, as I mentioned above. No:81 Hotel also has a cute clothing boutique. There is also good shopping in Bodrum Old Town.

If you’re looking for designer bags, shoes, clothing, and jewelry head to Yalıkavak Marina .

One thing to note about shopping in Turkey: It’s part of the Turkish culture to haggle and negotiate when buying. Be sure to shop around and find the best prices and then come back and negotiate on everything you want to buy.

6) Yalıkavak Marina

The Bodrum Peninsula is home to Yalıkavak Marina , one of Europe’s most renowned luxury marinas. Yalıkavak Marina is able to accommodate the biggest yachts in the world and is lined with designer shopping boutiques, and upscale restaurants and bars.

Yalikivak Marina is extravagant and beautiful and the perfect place to spend the afternoon window shopping and taking in your ultra-luxurious surroundings. It’s also a great place to have drinks and dinner.

We had my birthday dinner here at Sakhalin Bodrum. Sakhalin was named for the largest and most beautiful island in Russia. Founded by Russian restaurateur Boris Zarkov and brand chef Vladimir Mukhin, Sakhalin boasts an incredible seafood menu and quite possibly an even better ambiance.

7-8) Bodrum City & Bodrum Castle

Bodrum City is a beautiful port city on southwest side of the Bodrum peninsula, featuring twin bays with views of Bodrum Castle (also known as Castle of St. Peter), a medieval fortress built partly with stones from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that was completed in the 4th century B.C.

In 2016 Bodrum Castle was added to the tentative list of Unesco world heritage historical sites in Turkey. You can book this 5-hour Private Bodrum City Tour where you’ll explore the ancient city of Bodrum Castle, the Underwater Museum of Archeology (home to the world’s oldest known shipwrecks), and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus.

9) Day Tour: Ephesus & House of Virgin Mary

While in Bodrum you can also take a guided day trip from Bodrum to enter the ancient city of Ephesus, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient city is regarded as one of the best-preserved sites in the Mediterranean.

During this tour, you’ll visit magnificent ruins, including the Library of Celsus, and the house of the Virgin Mary. This tour includes pick-up in Bodrum, transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, and lunch at a local restaurant.

10) Day Trip To Kos

The Greek island of Kos is just a short 20-minute boat ride away. If you want to check two countries off your backlist in one day you can book this day trip to visit Kos . You will get picked up in the morning, from your hotel in Bodrum and get to spend all day on Kos.

The Best Areas & Hotels On The Bodrum Peninsula

There are an array of luxury, mid-range, and budget hotels across the Bodrum Peninsula. Here are the best areas to stay in, and the best hotels in those areas in each price range.

1) Türkbükü

While Yalıkavak is booshie and ultra-luxurious, Türkbükü is unpretentious, easy-going, and fun while still being upscale. As I mentioned above, the little fishing village of Türkbükü embodies a boho-chic spirit and is home to the Türkbükü Boardwalk, a fun stretch of restaurants bars, and shops along Türkbükü Bay.

It also has some of the best hotels in Bodrum. I loved staying in Türkbükü and would highly recommend booking a hotel in this area. Here are 7 of the best hotels in Türkbükü .

  • Macakizi Hotel – There are an array of luxury hotel chains taking over Bodrum, so it’s important to support locally-owned boutique hotels in the area like Macakizi, plus as I explained, this place is amazing and easily the best hotel in Türkbükü. Pricey but worth it .
  • No:81 Hotel – Ideally situated on the boardwalk next to Macakizi, No:81 Hotel is a 5-star boutique hotel. Our friends stayed here so I checked out their room and we spent one afternoon at the beach club. The rooms were modern, clean, and nicely appointed and the beach club was excellent. I highly recommend this hotel as a more affordable option in lieu of staying at Macakizi.
  • Mandarin Oriental Bodrum – Largest Mandarin Oriental property in the world, over 150 acres set on a gorgeous bay with a world-class beach club and top-notch restaurants such as Hakkasan. Mandarin Oriental has its own dock and is just a short water taxi ride away from Türkbükü Bay.
  • Galen Hotel & Beach – Budget-friendly, beach hotel with free breakfast and 24/7 front desk .
  • Divan Hotel Bodrum – Beachfront hotel, budget-friendly , spa services, private beach.

2) Yalikavak

As I mentioned about, the draw of Yalikavak is its new ultra-luxurious marina with an array of upscale restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Yalikavak Marina is a bit over the top for my personal taste but I can see the appeal.

For those who are traveling in super yachts, Yalikavak Marina can accommodate their large ships making it an ideal location. Here are 7 of the best hotels in and around Yalikavak .

  • The Bodrum EDITION – 108 guest rooms, suites, and villas, most with views of the Aegean Sea — some with private pools, balconies, and gardens. Just two miles from Yalikavak Marina, one of the top-rated new hotels in Bodrum .
  • Yalikavak Marina Hotel – Situated at the heart of Yalikavak Marina with direct access to all the shops and restaurants there plus an array of amenities and gorgeous views.
  • Allium Bodrum Resort & Spa – Chic boutique hotel with a private beach and full-service spa with a Turkish bath , walking distance to Yalikavak Marina.

  • 4Reasons Hotel & Bistro – Budget-friendly with a pool and outdoor restaurant, 4 minute drive to Yalikavak Marina.

3) Bodrum City

The beautiful port city of Bodrum is where you’ll find many of the top tourist attractions, tours, and landmarks on the peninsula such as Bodrum Farmers’ Market, Oasis Mall, Bodrum Castle, and Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World).

Bodrum City sits at the entrance to the Gulf of Gökova so it acts as a gateway for nearby beach towns and resorts. Since it’s the oldest town in Bodrum, it offers an array of budget-friendly restaurants and hotels. Here are 6 of the best hotels in Bodrum City .

The Best Restaurants In Bodrum

Bodrum has incredible food; it is fresh, flavorful, and delicious. The produce we enjoyed in Bodrum is some of the best I’ve had anywhere in the world. Many of the restaurants here serve up Meditarian-inspired cuisine.

While in Bodrum you’ll enjoy fresh seafood, fresh vegetables, freshly baked bread, and delicious homemade sauces that will have your mouth watering long after you leave Turkey.

While this is certainly not an extensive list, based on my experience spending seven days eating my way through Bodrum, here are 10 of the best restaurants in Bodrum .

  • Macakizi Hotel – Excellent spot for dinner or lunch seaside at the water’s edge. Visit the Macakizi website to make lunch or dinner reservations.
  • Lucca Beach Club – Lucca Beach at Mandarin Oriental Bodrum is a great spot for a beach club lunch experience. You can book a water taxi directly to their private dock. The beach club party gets going around 4pm.
  • Momo Bodrum – Momo is a fun spot for lunch and drinks in a beautiful setting. The food is exceptional and the beach club party gets going around 4pm.
  • Sakhalin – Located in Yalikavak Marina,  Sakhalin Bodrum is a lovely dinner spot that has an incredible seafood menu and a beautiful, upscale ambiance.
  • MIAMI – Located on the Türkbükü boardwalk, MIAM is a fun dinner spot that serves Mediterranean cuisine in a beautiful setting (request a seaside table), plus they have a lively after-dinner party scene with a DJ.
  • Hakkasan – Also located at the Mandarin Oriental, Hakkasan is a beautiful spot for an upscale dinner. Food is pricey but excellent and their build out over the water is stunning.
  • Naru Bodrum  – Naru serves up fresh Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine in a gorgeous setting in the Pine Trees, about 25 minutes drive from Türkbükü. Great for lunch or dinner.
  • Atilay – Great dinner spot located on the Türkbükü boardwalk. Atilay has been a local favorite since 1988, offering a seasonal selection of mezze, salads, and fish in a lovely setting (request a seaside table).
  • FENIX – Located in Yalikavak Marina, FENIX offers a unique atmosphere embodying Istanbul’s spirit, serving up international and South American cuisine in an upscale Aegean atmosphere. Great for dinner and drinks.
  • Brava Restaurant – Located inside The Bodrum EDITION, Brava serves up Latin-Aegean-inspired dishes. Their elevated menu celebrates the biodiversity of Bodrum, using only the freshest local produce.

Getting To Bodrum

Bodrum is easily accessible. Turkish Airways offers multiple flights daily from Istanbul to Bodrum and the new Istanbul International Airport (IST) is impressive and not a bad place to spend a few hours on a layover. There are tons of designer shops, restaurants, bars, and boutiques in the airport.

From Istanbul Airport it’s a quick 1hr 15 minute flight to Bodrum. You fly into Milas-Bodrum International Airport (BJV). From the airport, it’s an easy 50 minute cab ride or 20 minute water taxi ride to Türkbükü.

If you want to take a water taxi from the airport to your hotel make sure to set this up in advance. You should also set up your pick-up in advance as there are no Ubers in Bodrum and taxis can be hard to find.

Best Time To Visit Bodrum

If you want to experience everything Bodrum has to offer including a lively beach club scene then summer is the best time to visit. June, July, and August are considered high season in Bodrum. This is when all the hotels, beach clubs, restaurants, and shops are open and in full swing.

But while summer is an ideal time to visit it can be pricey, hard to get reservations, and very hot, especially in July when average temperatures peak at 94°F and sea temperatures around Bodrum average 76°F.

If you want to avoid the crowds and score better prices on hotels I suggest visiting during shoulder season. May and September are both great months to visit Bodrum. Flights to Bodrum and hotel prices are much cheaper during these months, most places are open, and the weather is great.

September, in particular, is an ideal month to visit. In May, the sea around Bodrum can be a bit chilly averaging around 64°F in the spring, but in September the sea is still warm with an average temperature of 73°F in the fall.

Other Things To Know About Bodrum

Here are a few other useful Bodrum tips to help you make the most of your stay!

How To Dress In Bodrum

Turkey is a predominately Muslim country with over 99% of the population being registered as Muslim. The Muslim dress code for women is very conservative (don’t show your shoulders or wear shorts or skirts above the knee), so I wasn’t sure what to expect as far as the dress code in Bodrum.

When we arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see that across Bodrum, the dress code is beach chic casual meaning you can basically wear whatever you want. In fact, many women dressed sexy beach chic casual – so basically the same attire you’d wear in St. Barts or St. Tropez. During the day for lunches at beach clubs, you can wear a bathing suit with a cover-up and sandals.

At night you’ll see most women in dresses, and flat sandals. If you’re eating dinner in Yalikavak Marina you can dress up a bit more and wear a fancier dress and high heels, but this is the only place I would recommend heals. For the rest of Bodrum flat sandals are ideal.

For men, during the day, t-shirts, shorts, and sandals are fine. For going out to dinner at any of the upscale spots in Bodrum, men should wear collared short (or long) sleeve shirts paired with nice shorts or slacks and loafers.

If you want to pay in cash in Turkey you need to get Turkish Lira. Most places do not accept US dollars. All the small local shops and a lot of the taxi cabs require you to pay in cash in Turkish Lira. However, most of the high-end restaurants, bars, and boutiques take credit cards.

Reservations

If you’re visiting Bodrum in the busy summer months of June, July, and August it’s crucial that you make dinner and beach club reservations in advance: All the best places get booked up quickly in the summer.

Unless you have clout, the best beach club tables and cabanas seem to be given out on a first come first serve basis so while you’ll need a reservation, you’ll also need to arrive early (before 2pm) if you want to snag a good table or cabana, especially if you have a large group.

If you’re staying at a luxury hotel let your concierge make all your bookings because they will be able to get much better reservations than you will get on your own. Our concierge at Macakizi Hotel worked with us for weeks leading up to my birthday week to ensure we had all the best places booked for our large party.

Getting Around Bodrum

Getting around Bodrum can be tough. Plan ahead and leave extra time for logistics. Taxis are hard to find and the roads are small and full of potholes leading to extended driving times around the peninsula.

When possible, I highly suggest taking a water taxi. If you’re staying at a luxury hotel with its own dock they can call a water taxi to pick you up at your hotel and take you to any of the nearby beach clubs, restaurants, or hotels on the water that have their own docks.

Bodrum Ultimate Guide Wrap Up

Bodrum, in my opinion, is similar to St. Barts or St. Tropez but much more affordable and without the snobbery. Food, drinks, beach clubs, and shopping are still pricey at the luxury hotels in Bodrum but it’s still cheaper than many luxury destinations, and if you wander off the beaten path and go to local spots it’s very affordable.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Bodrum. I knew it would be nice but it was more upscale, fun, and more relaxed than I imagined it would be. It has everything St Barts and St Tropez have but without the pretentiousness, which I found very appealing.

If you’re looking for a new luxury seaside destination to try, I definitely recommend booking a trip to Bodrum.

We hope that this Bodrum guide has inspired you to visit the Turkish Riviera. If you have questions or advice please share with our readers in the comments below.

As someone who has been to Turkey twice (I’m obsessed with it, my parents ended up going after). I feel like I need to go back a 3rd time just to go to Bodrum! Great post, thanks for all the tips and pics.

Run, Don't Walk Here: A Review of the Bodrum Edition in the Turkish Riviera

Nick Ellis

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

I've become quite fond of Marriott's Edition brand. After stays at its properties in Miami Beach , Shanghai and New York, I've found them to be youthful but refined, the on-property food-and-drink options have always been stellar, and the design of each property I've stayed at has been beautiful (and, yes, perfect for Instagram). While Edition has properties in "conventional" locations like New York (in both the Flatiron District and Times Square ), London and Barcelona , the brand has also opened hotels in locations that are more off-the-beaten-path — at least for American travelers — such as Sanya, China , and Bodrum, Turkey.

bodrum travel review

The Bodrum property immediately caught my attention when it opened in the summer of 2018. Its dramatic setting on the Aegean Sea immediately drew me in, and the very Edition-typical minimalist rooms and impeccably designed public spaces sealed the deal.

bodrum travel review

When I decided on a European vacation with cousins for this summer, Bodrum, and its Edition hotel, shot directly to the top of the list. Americans flock to European summer hot spots like Ibiza, Mykonos and the South of France, but Bodrum is not exactly on their radar, although it's very popular for Turks and other Europeans looking for a sun-soaked vacation. I was excited at the prospect of visiting a new country, Turkey, as well as getting to experience the laid-back lifestyle of Bodrum, otherwise known as the Turkish Riviera. The best part of it all? It only cost me 50,000 Marriott points per night.

When the Bodrum Edition first opened, it was a Category 5 hotel, meaning free nights only cost 35,000 points per night. That was an absolute steal, and this year, when the property opened again for the summer season (it opened this year on May 1 and will close at the end of September), it had moved into Category 6, meaning free nights cost 50,000 points -- for now. Come Sept. 14, 2019, Marriott will be introducing its peak and off-peak pricing scheme, meaning that nights will cost anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 points, depending on the algorithm that decides which nights are peak/off-peak or standard. Considering that this property is only open for one season, it's going to be very interesting to see where the days land on the peak/standard/off-peak spectrum.

Since I stayed before the change goes into effect, I paid 50,000 points per night for my four-night stay, which I considered to be a phenomenal deal. If I'd had to pay cash for a room, I would have had to pay upwards of 800 euros (around $885) per night. Oh, and there's no resort fee , which is a major win in my book. Plus, this property is eligible for the free-night certificates that come with certain high-end Marriott cobranded cards, such as the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card . These certificates only apply for up to 50,000 points per night, so you can only apply one if you can find a night at standard or off-peak rates.

The Bodrum Edition is actually in a seaside town called Yalikavak. Bodrum refers both to the city of Bodrum and the Bodrum peninsula, where there are many towns and villages. The resort is just over 30 miles from Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV), which surprised me with its large size and plentiful flights to cities across Europe. We took a taxi from the airport to the resort, which took 50 minutes and cost us just under $25. On the way to the Edition, we passed a number of other high-end resorts such as the Mandarin Oriental and Amanruya.

The resort itself is set on a peaceful bay and framed by dramatic hills dotted with white vacation homes, a scene typical of the Aegean coast. The Edition is a 10-minute taxi ride into the town of Yalikavak, which features a glittering marina featuring the docked yachts of Ukrainian billionaires (according to locals), plenty of shopping and restaurants featuring both Turkish cuisine and international fare, such as Zuma, a high-end sushi restaurant/club combo that's found in other global hotspots like Dubai, London, Miami and Las Vegas.

For less of the glitterati, head to Gümüslük, a much more laid-back fishing town about 25 minutes away from the Edition, featuring seaside fish restaurants and cafes to catch gorgeous sunsets.

We arrived around 2pm on a Wednesday and were greeted by friendly staff and a delicious ginger lemonade that was exactly the pick-me-up I needed after a very early morning.

bodrum travel review

I thought that arriving on a Wednesday would have increased the chances of an upgrade, but no luck for this Gold elite member. We were given our keys just a few minutes later and headed to our two-queen room, which was on the same level as the lobby.

bodrum travel review

The property is set on a steep hill, so while it was nice initially to have a short walk from the lobby to our room, once we were settled it became a nuisance. Our room was at the very top of the hill at the "beginning" of the property, while all the amenities were at the bottom of the hill toward the beach, so we had to be extra sure that we had everything we needed before heading down for the day, or else we'd have to climb quite a few stairs to get back up to the room, which wasn't exactly a quick process. The property provided golf carts to shuttle guests from the pool and beach back to their rooms, but we preferred to walk the majority of the time.

bodrum travel review

Beside the somewhat unfortunate location of the room, I loved just about everything about it.

bodrum travel review

Walking in, I could immediately see out to the beautiful flowers and trees of the property as well as to the ocean, though that view was somewhat obstructed.

bodrum travel review

To the right of the front door were the closet and the room's minibar and coffee station which featured a Nespresso machine.

bodrum travel review

To the left was the bathroom, which featured a double vanity, separate large soaking tub, a WC, a standing shower and toiletries from Le Labo, which I love. It all looked beautiful and checked my boxes for what I believe is a great hotel bathroom. However, there was one big flaw: The shower overflowed so badly that we had to lay down the entirety of the range of towels given to our room each day to stop the flood.

bodrum travel review

The bathroom was enclosed in glass, but there were curtains that you could draw around it so that you could have privacy. One of the curtains even extended all the way to the other wall of the room, effectively cutting the room in half. This allowed people to use the bathroom area and bedroom area simultaneously, with a degree of privacy. I thought this was a really practical touch for a beach resort, especially since I was traveling in a group.

The rest of the room was classic Edition all the way. The floor, rugs, drapes and wood trip were a neutral gray, while mostly everything else was white. The walls were spare, save for one piece of artwork above one of the queen beds and a sleek lighting feature above them.

bodrum travel review

Power was plentiful, with AC and USB outlets adjacent to each bed. Across from the beds were a desk and chair.

bodrum travel review

Waiting on the desk was a welcome gift of delicious cherries that I could not stop eating!

bodrum travel review

Next to the desk was a white chair that doubled as a storage unit, and then came the sliding glass door that led to the balcony.

bodrum travel review

While we didn't do much with the balcony besides sit briefly to take FaceTime calls from family members, it was nice to keep it open in the evening to get the cool summer sea breeze into the room.

Food and Beverage

Before diving into the eating and drinking landscape at the Bodrum Edition, let me just say that the hotel's breakfast is reason enough to visit this property. First of all, it was served until 4pm daily. Yes. All. Day. Brunch. Second, and even better than the late cutoff time, was the fact that it was included with our room rate. And, I'm not talking about a continental breakfast here -- this was an extravagant affair. It's a little unclear as to whether breakfast is always included for all guests, and I've read conflicting experiences from other guests, but we never signed a check for a breakfast, no matter how much we ordered, and it was not charged upon checkout. I'll take it!

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0BPuApF7ud/

It was apparent that the staff was very proud of the Turkish breakfast tradition and excited to share it with foreigners. To begin, there was an offering of traditional Turkish breakfast items like a selection of breads (including simit, which is similar to a bagel), olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, parsley, dried fruits, Turkish cheeses, butter, Aegean honeycomb, homemade jams and preserves, seasonal fruit (including those delicious cherries that were also my welcome amenity) and fried sucuk, a Turkish sausage.

Oh, and the restaurant from which it was served was stunning in its own right, too.

bodrum travel review

That was just the beginning. In addition to all of that, you could choose as many "main courses" as you liked. These included eggs any style, menemen (a scrambled-egg dish with tomatoes, peppers and onions), smoked salmon and avocado eggs Benedict, fried eggs ç ilbir style (served with warm yogurt, mushrooms, chili oil and nuts) and homemade granola bowls with Turkish yogurt, nuts, fruit and chia seeds.

We're not done yet. In addition to all of these unfathomably delicious breakfast foods, there was a full selection of fresh-pressed juices, wellness shots and Turkish coffee and tea. After late nights dancing until dawn, nothing was better than ordering just about everything on this menu and eating it well into the afternoon.

bodrum travel review

Breakfast at Kitchen was definitely a highlight of the on-property dining experience, but there were plenty of other options. At the pool and beach was the Brava Beach Club, which served pool- and beachside food and drinks. Since we spent most of our days hanging out either at the beach or the pool, we ate here quite a few times.

bodrum travel review

On the drink side of things, there were about 10 cocktails available at 85 lira ($15) apiece, in addition to two beers, a full wine list, soft drinks, juices, coffees, hot tea, iced tea and kombucha. I was a particularly big fan of the frosé, made with frozen rosé wine, lemon and strawberry, as well as the hibiscus-and-lemongrass iced tea.

bodrum travel review

In our nearly five full days at the resort, we had plenty of time to get through most of the snacks on offer. Highlights were the elaborate chips and guacamole (105 lira, or $18; though the chips weren't the best I've had), the sticky fried-chicken bites (80 lira, or just under $15), patatas bravas (65 lira, around $10) and pita bread with assorted dips platter (65 lira, or $10).

bodrum travel review

We did eat dinner one night at the beachside Morena, the less formal (and less expensive) sister to the property's signature restaurant, Brava. It was a little confusing since it used the same space as the Brava Beach Club during the day.

bodrum travel review

We started off our dinner at Morena with a pitcher of a gin, ginger, tumeric and soda (495 lira, or $85). It was light and refreshing, perfect for a balmy evening by the sea.

bodrum travel review

To eat, we began with two cucumber salads (50 lira, or $9, apiece) which were served with a sweet chili and coriander sauce; an arugula, roasted pumpkin, walnut, pickled pear-and-aged cheese salad dressed in balsamic vinegar (90 lira, or just over $15) and an order of sweet potato sticks served with sour cream and sweet chili sauce (65 lira, or $10).

bodrum travel review

There was a variety of fish, meat and vegetarian options for main courses. I chose the shish tawook (115 lira, or $20) -- grilled chicken served with lemon and garlic on a tomato pita -- for myself, while my cousins chose the salt-encrusted sea bream, which was served with butter, soy and chives (310 lira, or $55). The quality of the food was outstanding, and we all agreed that we just wanted a little bit more.

bodrum travel review

Like I mentioned, we mainly ate dinners off property, so I did not try the hotel's 24-hour room service, Brava or the on-site bar/club called Discetto. We walked in one evening, and it was completely empty -- I'm not sure if it just hasn't caught on yet or what, but it didn't look all that fun. However, I very much enjoyed the food and drink that I sampled at this hotel. And I still haven't gotten over that Turkish brunch.

bodrum travel review

Of course, the most prominent amenity at the Bodrum Edition is its beach. It's the focal point of the property, and it proved to be the place to be during the long, hot days. The beach club was open to the public (it even had a separate entrance), but it never felt too crowded.

bodrum travel review

It definitely did feel like a beach club, though. Each day a DJ set up for the afternoon, and most days they played exactly what you'd expect when you think of a chic European beach club -- a lot of deep house music. That's typically not my first choice when it comes to music, but in this atmosphere it totally worked.

bodrum travel review

Since the hotel was set in a bay, the water was exceedingly calm and perfect for swimming, though the entrance was rocky. There was a variety of water activities on offer through a third-party company, including Jet Skis, scuba diving and more, but I just stuck to plain old swimming.

The Turkish Riviera doesn't have a huge number of sandy beaches, and most are of the rocky, craggy variety so typical to that area of the world. However, the Bodrum Edition had a sandy beach -- and it was some of the whitest sand I'd ever seen. Rumor had it the hotel imported it from Egypt, but wherever it came from, it was amazingly soft and never got too hot. Also at the beach it had four cabanas that could be rented for the day, though we passed.

bodrum travel review

If the beach isn't your scene, you're in luck. The Bodrum Edition's pool was beautiful. It was a simple rectangle with an infinity edge and a super-cool wood deck, and the overall effect was really fantastic.

bodrum travel review

Coupled with the Edition's signature low-slung, white-cushioned lounge chairs, and you had a trendy yet timeless scene seemingly tailor-made for Instagram -- I have proof!

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0LqZdMAbOg/

Just like at the beach, cabanas were available for rent at the pool, though we refrained from renting one as we didn't really see a value in it.

bodrum travel review

This hotel placed a lot of emphasis on fitness. The gym itself was very large for a hotel gym, and there were always trainers present and available for one-on-one appointments or leading group fitness classes. There were also daily yoga classes in the morning and evening that were held on a smallish lawn that overlooked the pool and beach. I told myself that I'd go to a class each morning because it looked so peaceful, but I either overslept or spent too much time at breakfast. Maybe next summer ....

bodrum travel review

Of course, the resort offered a full spa, which I didn't use. But I did catch a glimpse of some of the plunge pools as I walked down to the pool one day, and it looked heavenly. If you're a big spa person, I have a feeling you'd be very happy here.

bodrum travel review

The Wi-Fi worked well enough to stream Netflix in my room but struggled by the pool and beach.

Everyone I interacted with at this property was exceedingly friendly and worked tirelessly to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Smiles were plentiful, and whatever we asked for -- from food to extra towels and shampoo -- was delivered promptly. I got sick on the last couple of days of my stay and I called the front desk to see if there was a nearby store that had sports drinks to help me get rehydrated (no, this wasn't just a hangover), and they delivered two blue Powerades to me with a note wishing me well. Staff members also gave out their WhatsApp numbers so that we could text any questions. This is something I really appreciated, especially when I wanted to find somewhere for dinner or a bar for afterward.

Overall Impression

bodrum travel review

The Bodrum Edition is a special hotel in a place where time seems to move slower. It's an Instagrammer's dream, no doubt, but it gets the basics right, too. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are chic, sleek and practical, and the public spaces are drop-dead gorgeous, but the vibe is relaxed and unpretentious, unlike some of the hotels you'd find in Mykonos or Ibiza.

bodrum travel review

There are plenty of high-end hotels in this area of the world, but I'd be hard-pressed to find one that's as good a value for your points as this one is. My advice: Save up your Bonvoy points and put them to good use for a summer vacation in the Turkish Riviera. You won't regret it.

Fodor's Expert Review The Marmara Bodrum

Sulu Hasan Cad. 18, Bodrum, Mugla, 48400, Turkey

Most of the elegant rooms at this hilltop aerie enjoy views of Bodrum and the sea from balconies and terraces, while a free shuttle to a private beach club in Göltürkbükü puts the seaside within easy reach. The lovely lounges are filled with artwork by prominent Turkish and international artists, and the two pools, sundeck, and outdoor bar/restaurant seem to hang high above the city. The hotel welcomes pets, but not children under the age of 12.

Review: Amanruya, Bodrum

Deluxe sea view pavilion at Amanruya, Turkey

Reviewed by Sarah James

The stone pavilions of Amanruya pepper the hills of Bodrum’s north coastline, with sweeping views of the Aegean and the scent of cypress trees ever-present. Complete serenity can feel impossible to achieve, but Amanruya makes it effortless.

Set the scene

We wind down a road lined with olive trees as Amanruya slowly comes into focus, revealing the pink hues of the resort’s elegant stone and terracotta-laden pavilions.

Shadows and light peek through as we make our way to the heart of the retreat, where the vast infinity pool, restaurants, spa, three-story library and pool club sit. The guest pavilions are a short walk away via meandering stone pathways that snake across the property and down to the Aegean Sea.

I immediately call for a buggy to the beach club; cradled in the Cyprus trees, guests can relax on lounge chairs and daybeds that hug the coastline. I order a glass of Turkish Sauvignon Blanc and listen to the sounds of the sea as I settle into my time at Amanruya.

The backstory

Aman opened their first property in Phuket nearly 35 years ago and evolved to become synonymous with quiet luxury. The team has an uncanny ability to create hotels that embody each location's landscape, and Amanruya – meaning 'peaceful dream' – proves it with unmatched elegance. Amanruya deftly celebrates the culture and scenery that Bodrum's north coast provides. Each Aman brings a particular individuality, yet the continuous thread between each is this aptitude for creating a space where guests can fully succumb to relaxation.

Guest pavilions are sprinkled across the grounds, constructed with sun-bleached stone from the local area, paired with a terracotta roof to complement the Mediterranean scenery. Each pavilion is alike in design and layout, with a choice of garden or sea views. The outdoor space includes a private pool, a double day bed (perfect for a glass of wine at sunset) and lounge chairs. The gardens allow for privacy and a symphony of sounds; wind rustles through the trees, water ripples through the pool, and birds chirp.

Spacious interiors nod to Turkish architecture – all graceful concrete and terrazzo arches. White curtains drape across the four-poster bed at the centre of the room, letting rays of light peek through in the morning. Likewise, the walls and ceilings encourage dappled light to make its way into the pavilion, thanks to carefully considered choices by the architects. The bathrooms are a marble-lovers dream – with a freestanding bath that peeks out over the garden and an enormous rainfall shower, you can understand why guests may never leave their suite.

Food and drink

For lunches spent basking in the sun, nab tables at the beach club or poolside dining pavilion and order pides (a Turkish take on pizza), fresh salads and – my don't miss dish – Lahmacun, a delicious mix of lamb and herbs sprinkled across a flatbread you roll up to enjoy.

Smart suppers are best spent at the Anatolian Dining Pavilion, where Executive Chef Omer Ozkan Cam takes you through his take on traditional Turkish dishes. My favourite was Manti, a homemade lamb and beef steamed dumpling doused in tomato sauce and garlic yoghurt.

Surprisingly though, my favourite meal of them all was breakfast. We ordered the Bodrum Breakfast to share – a spread of traditional cheeses, fresh vegetables, and comb honey with clotted cream arrived instantly.

Heavenly. Amanruya’s spa facilities are away from the chitter-chatter of the dining pavilion making for a serene escape. I decided to indulge in a massage treatment, but they also offer foot wraps, scrubs, and manicures. There's also a well-stocked gym, and a yoga and pilates studio with unmatched views of the Aegean Sea.

The service

Prudent and warm. The staff are discreet yet always appear at the right moment to offer you a drink, take your bag or call you a buggy to the beach. They manage to be personal and polite, a difficult balance to strike.

The neighbourhood

Amanruya is all about the resort, so visiting the surrounding area does require a drive, but one that’s well worth it. The hotel will happily help you organise a day trip to Etrim, a nearby village where you can experience the history and culture of Turkey’s hand-knotted carpets. We also visited Limon, the perfect spot for watching the sunset while enjoying a cocktail, and afterwards, catching a cab to Mimoza for a vibey, delicious supper.

There is little to no single-use plastic at the resort, with the shampoo and conditioner bottled in ceramic jugs of blue and white, and washing is done only upon request by placing a pinecone on your bed.

Accessibility

This property has limited accessibility, as the landscape and traditional village design mean there are many steps, making access to the various amenities and pavilions difficult for those with mobility issues.

Anything else to mention?

Amanruya allowed me to take a deep breath and engage with my surroundings, which city dwellers often forget to do. Don't check out without ordering breakfast to your room to enjoy the sea air and truly wind down.

Antalya or Bodrum: Which Is Better?

When it comes to choosing a family holiday in Turkey, many travelers are contemplating between two iconic beach resort regions; Antalya vs Bodrum.

Both Antalya and Bodrum are a region on the coast of Turkey, offering incredible beaches, thriving nightlife and some top-class resorts. While they have many similarities, they are also very different places, which often causes people to ask the question: which is better, Antalya or Bodrum?

This guide will look at all the reasons why you would visit the two cities and compare them based on their beaches, history, nightlife, resorts, food, attractions, family-friendly atmosphere, and all the modern conveniences such as how to get around and finding pharmacies etc.

So if you’re deciding between Antalya and Bodrum, read on to see our comparison…

Antalya or Bodrum for Beaches

One of the main reasons why you would visit Antalya or Bodrum is for the beaches . It is their biggest selling point, however their beaches are vastly different.

Antalya is located on the Turkish Riviera, otherwise known as The Turquoise Coast because of the stunning blue Mediterranean ocean there. Antalya beaches  are spread far and wide across the region, and there are many to choose from.

Antalya also has a beach in the city center, though it tends to be busy, which can somewhat dampen the spirit of going to the beach.

However it’s really easy to get to beaches in the region using public transport. Some notably beautiful beaches are Mermerli Beach, Çıralı Beach, and Kaputas Beach. Antalya is also near to Alanya, which is another city that has some beautiful beaches nearby, such as Cleopatra Beach.

The beaches in Antalya tend to be sheltered by bays, which means they have gentle waves and are great for swimming, especially with small children. They also have all the facilities you need, such as changing rooms, restaurants and lounge chairs. And you can also find several secluded and stunning beaches that offer more privacy (though you have to hike to them).

Suluada-Beach-Antalya-Turkey

Bodrum region on the Bodrum Peninsula, which connects to the Aegean Sea in the southwest of Turkey. Bodrum is very close to Greece, and on a clear day, you can even see the island of Kos in the distance.

It’s also possible to get a ferry from Bodrum to Kos and other parts of Turkey. The ocean in Bodrum is much more open, however the city of Bodrum is protected by a bay.

The beaches in Bodrum are actually located outside the city and span across the peninsula. They tend to be sandy beaches, but some of them are rocky or have shingles. A nice beach in Bodrum is Yahsi Beach, which has gentle waves for swimming, lounge chairs, and beach bars.

Unlike Antalya, Bodrum’s beaches tend to have a lively atmosphere, with more restaurants, hotels, and beach bars lining them. It’s less likely you’ll find seclusion and privacy at the beaches here, but if you’re willing to travel out, you can find more empty beaches such as Aspat Beach.

Winner: both Antalya and Bodrum have equally nice beaches, but Antalya has more beaches in the region. It also has a beach in the city of Antalya, which makes it slightly better than Bodrum for beaches.

Antalya or Bodrum for History

Antalya has a long and fascinating history. It is said to have been built around 200 BCE by the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon. The famous ancient port is said to have been built in 150 BCE, and used as a navy base for King Attalus II.

The city was conquered many times, and each tribe added something different to the city. The Romans settled here shortly after the Pergamons and expanded the city tremendously. They also built the surrounding towns and cities, as well as Hadrian’s Gate as well as many neighboring cities. In 1319, it was taken by the Ottomans who reigned for five hundred years.

Antalya was also an Italian stronghold for three years after WWI. But it was given back to the newly independent Turkey after the Turkish War of Independence.

Much of Antalya’s history can still be seen and explored, especially in the Old Town which features many ancient buildings and monuments. The old Roman Harbor and Hidirlik Tower are largely preserved, and visitors can see the remains of an ancient time at the Termessos Ruins.

Antalya is also within a day trip to Demre, the gateway to the Myra Ancient City and Lycian Rock Tombs.

is antalya worth visiting

Bodrum on the other hand has a very different history. It was built on the ruins of the city of Halicarnassus , which was built in the 4th-5th centuries under the rule of the Persian Empire. Halicarnassus was ruled by Mausolus and his wife (and also his sister) Artemisia II which continued on to the Hekatomnid dynasty. The Hospitallers occupied the city until 1402.

The remains of this ancient time can still be seen today, as the castle, known as the Petronium or Castle of St. Peter, still remains in a well-preserved state. The castle was also a Christian stronghold during the Arab wars but was captured by the Ottomans in 1522.

You can also see glimpses of the past of this ancient city in the ruins of the  Mausoleum of Mausolus , ruler of Caria (the ancient name for Anatolia). The mausoleum is said to date back to the 4th century BCE. There’s also the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus which dates back to 350 BCE.

In the city itself, you can see glimpses of the Greco-Roman era at the Bodrum Ancient Theatre. The theater is said to date back to the 4th Century. The theater has been renovated to look like the original theater all those centuries ago.

The theatre is across the road from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus so it’s easy to see all the history of the area within a day.

Like Antalya, Bodrum was briefly occupied by Italy after WWI.

Winner: Both Antalya and Bodrum have a very different history. However, Bodrum’s history is all in one place and can be explored in a day. Antalya has a large ancient Old Town, and several historical landmarks around the region. So Antalya is better for history lovers.

Antalya or Bodrum for Attractions

When it comes to attractions, both Antalya and Bodrum have excellent attractions worth visiting. Beaches are plentiful, which we’ve covered, but aside from that, each city has its own unique attractions to visit.

Antalya has a historic center, known as Kaleici, which is rich with historical landmarks to check out. There’s also the Roman harbor, Turkish Bazaar, and several fascinating museums . Then there are all the incredible waterparks which are  perfect for families .

It’s also really easy to get to other  landmarks in Turkey  from Antalya, making it the perfect base to explore multiple day trips. The Lycian Rock Tombs, the Taurus Mountains, and the ancient city of Perge are all accessible within a day trip from Antalya.

When it comes to attractions, Bodrum relies heavily on its beaches. It has one waterpark, Bodrum Aquapark , and a few art museums. It also has a few museums, such as the Bodrum Museum Of Underwater Archaeology, Bodrum Maritime Museum, and Karia Princess Museum.

Of course, there are some historical sites to visit such as the ancient theatre and the castle, but aside from these attractions we’ve listed above, there isn’t much else to do.

Winner: Antalya has more attractions and so is better than Bodrum for attractions.

Antalya or Bodrum for Food

Because both Antalya and Bodrum have a long history and were conquered by many tribes, their cuisine is diverse and unique to the region.

Both in Antalya and Bodrum, the food has a Mediterranean feel. They have plenty of sweet dishes, with burnt ice cream and lentil ice cream being stapled favorites in Antalya, as well as pumpkin pie and bergamot marmalade.

In Bodrum, you will find Sarayli, a light, sweet pastry dish, and Katmer, a type of folded pie. Bodrum desserts tend to be filled with almonds and sesame seeds.

bodrum travel review

Dishes in Antalya also feature tahini, a creamy sauce that is popular in Eastern Mediterranean countries. While in Bodrum, dishes tend to be more hearty and traditionally Turkish. Its staple dish is boregi, which is popular all over the country.

When deciding on which place is better for food, it really depends on what flavors and dishes you like. If you’re looking for more traditional Turkish food, then Bodrum is better, if you enjoy sweet treats, then Antalya is better.

Winner: Both destinations offer world-class cuisine and plenty of excellent restaurants. So when it comes to food, Antalya and Bodrum are equal .

Antalya or Bodrum for Families

If you’re visiting Turkey as a family, you’re going to want to make sure the destination is suitable for families in terms of attractions, safety, and entertainment options.

Antalya is very safe , though some neighborhoods can be a bit dodgy after dark. For families though, the resorts offer a safe base and have plenty of entertainment options for the evening.

You’ll find the beaches are very family-friendly, with gentle waves and lifeguards at pretty much every beach. If you’re in need of other family-friendly attractions besides the beach, then you can head to the Toy Museum, Sandland, and one of several waterparks and theme parks, such as The Land of Legends .

The most popular waterparks are Aktur Park, Karaalioglu Park, and Waterhill. There are also several  waterfalls in Antalya  which offer a nice break from the ocean.

bodrum travel review

Bodrum is also a safe beach resort destination so you’ll find plenty of family-friendly resorts on the beach. These resorts tend to be some of the best all-inclusive luxury beach resorts in Turkey that have so much to do that you don’t really need to leave. We’re talking outdoor pools with slides, tennis courts, games rooms, kids clubs and more.

In terms of attractions for kids outside of the resorts, well sadly this is where Bodrum falls short. There are plenty of beaches and they are all family-friendly, with lifeguards, and gentle waves and some have kayaks and peddle boats for rent.

Then there is Bodrum Aquapark, which is the only waterpark in the area. It’s possible to take day trips to Pammukale or Ephesus from Bodrum, but while these are great for adults, small children won’t appreciate them, or the long journey, to get to them.

If your kids will be happy to spend every day at the beach, or taking a boat tour to the outlying islands, then Bodrum will be a fine place for a family holiday.

Winner: Antalya has more attractions for children and so we think Antalya is better for families.

Antalya or Bodrum for Hotels and Resorts

When it comes to resorts, both Antalya and Bodrum offer incredible options. They are both big regions and very popular places, so you’ll find plenty of options when it comes to vacation rentals, luxury resorts, all-inclusive resorts, and high-end hotels.

In the summer, both areas are hugely popular destinations and the best hotels get booked up quickly. However, Bodrum is popular in the summer and has more options when it comes to all-inclusive resorts. These tend to be better value if booked in advance because they offer discounted rates.

bodrum travel review

Antalya however is much easier to find a deal last minute. You’ll also find some of the finest high-end resorts in the whole of Turkey, including the seven-star Saturn Palace Resort Hotel.

These resorts are more geared to couples and adult travelers, rather than families. Families looking for resorts will probably stay outside the city of Antalya in places like Lara Beach where the facilities (and price) are better.

If you’re a family looking for a resort in the city of Antalya, you’ll find a few but not as many as you would in the city of Bodrum.

Winner: For all-inclusive, family-friendly resorts, then Bodrum is better. But for world-class service and luxury, Antalya is better

Antalya or Bodrum for Nightlife

When it comes to nightlife, you’ll find a huge party scene in Bodrum. It’s sometimes called ‘The Ibiza of Turkey’ because of the lively nightclubs.

If you’re a young traveler looking to party, then you’ll find a plethora of entertainment and nighttime parties in this region. You can also book onto party boats in the daytime and sail around the island, dancing to DJs and drinking cocktails.

bodrum travel review

The nightlife in Antalya is also thriving. There’s plenty of options of places to party, such as in beach bars, cocktail bars, nightclubs, and live music venues in downtown.

There’s also a boulevard in Antalya called Bar Street, which is dedicated to bars and clubs. Like Bodrum, the nightlife in Antalya attracts a much younger crowd.

If you want to, you can party all night long in both Antalya and Bodrum, but because of its longstanding party reputation, Bodrum takes the top spot.

Winner: For nightlife, Bodrum is the winner because of its long-standing reputation as the Ibiza of Turkey.

Antalya or Bodrum for Modern Conveniences

Vacationing shouldn’t be stressful, so you want to pick a destination that makes it easy to get around, and has plenty of supermarkets, pharmacies, and in case of emergencies, at least one hospital.

When we refer to modern conveniences, we mean having access to the basic essentials we have at home.

Luckily, both Antalya and Bodrum have plenty of these. Antalya has a really easy-to-use transport system, with a tram connecting the inner city and a bus network that takes you to all the surrounding areas. If you want to go to the beach, you don’t need to hire a car.

bodrum travel review

There are loads of pharmacies and hospitals in the inner city, so if you ever need to pick up medicine, you won’t have to travel far. There’s a grocery store or convenience store on almost every street.

Likewise in Bodrum, there are plenty of pharmacies and two average hospitals. Hopefully, you won’t need to visit the hospital, but there is one in the center of Bodrum and one more just outside the city too.

In terms of transport, Bodrum has a minibus network that connects all the beaches and attractions. It’s really easy to use and there are schedules posted at every stop. There is a bus terminal in the center of Bodrum and Yalıkavak and Turgutreis, which are all connected by roads passing all the attractions.

Like Antalya, you can get around Bodrum without renting a car and using public transport easily.

Winner: Both Antalya and Bodrum have plenty of pharmacies, supermarkets, and hospitals and are easy to get around. When it comes to modern conveniences, Antalya and Bodrum are equal .

The Bodrum EDITION

Review: The Bodrum EDITION [Türkiye]

Page Contents

I’ve finally done one of my craziest points redemptions yet withing the Marriott Bonvoy property. I’ve heard many great things about The Bodrum EDITION from reading reviews from blogs and forums. I also never stayed at an EDITION hotel before, so I was pretty excited to give it a try myself! Does the hotel live up to its hype? Let’s find out.

The Bodrum EDITION- Booking

I’ve redeemed 200,000 points for 5 nights at off-peak rates thanks to the Fifth Night Free benefit when you book a Marriott hotel for consecutive 4 nights with points. However, The Bodrum EDITION is one of the properties that are heavily affected by the dynamic pricing . For now, expect to pay 71,500 to 106,000 per night to redeem for this hotel depending on seasonality due to its Category 8B placement.

It’s a seasonal hotel, so it’s only open for the summer time in Bodrum (late April to October, with slight variations each year). Expect busy times to be at peak summer months like July and August.

Cash rates for a night can range between 500-1000 EUR per night depending on the seasonality.

The Bodrum EDITION- Location

The hotel is located in the town of Yalikavak. Keep in mind that Bodrum is both the name of a peninsula and a city. The ‘Bodrum’ in The Bodrum EDITION implies the peninsula, which the town of Yalikavak is on. Yalikavak is at the northern part of the peninsula, while the city of Bodrum is on the southern part of the peninsula. Getting to the city of Bodrum from the hotel requires a taxi ride, which you can expect to pay ~$10 per ride.

Regardless of where you are in the Bodrum peninsula, you’re in the Turkish Riviera where it’s also known as the Turquoise Coast because of the glistening blue water along the coastlines.

There may be public transportations in Bodrum, but they’re not very well documented, so transportation cost will be at the higher end compared to major cities in Turkey like Istanbul and Izmir if you want to make your life easier. I found it difficult to use Uber or BiTaksi to call for taxi on my own because of the sparse availability, and I’d recommend using the hotel’s concierge to call a cab for you.

The Bodrum EDITION- Check-in

I was welcomed by a bellman who’d then escorted me to the lobby. The lobby looks like an oasis (without the water), and it just smelled really nice with their signature Le Labo fragrance.

The Bodrum EDITION Lobby

I was then treated with a sample of their trademark ice cream. I could choose between an alcoholic or non-alcoholic ice cream. I chose the non-alcoholic Turkish coffee ice cream. It was good, and of course, there are more flavors you can try later on during your stay.

The Bodrum EDITION Turkish Coffee Ice Cream

I was proactively upgraded from the base Deluxe Room to a Premier Room with Sea View at Room 721. The Guest Relations agent then escorted me to the room with a short buggy ride.

Do You Get Free Breakfast at The Bodrum EDITION?

Compared to previous years, The Bodrum EDITION no longer give free breakfast to those who book with points regardless of your Marriott Bonvoy status, at least for 2022. Whether this trend is a permanent change or not is still unknown until I see reports of those who booked with points receiving free breakfast or not in the near future. I was shocked to find out that I would not receive free breakfast, and there was no data point in 2022 as I stayed at one of the earliest times for when the hotel opens for the year.

The hotel does give free breakfast if you book with cash because ALL cash rates get you free breakfast regardless of your status. The segregation between points and cash booking is pretty disappointing and shocking, and I wish there was full transparency in both the hotel and Marriott whether to treat cash and points bookings the same or not.

The Bodrum EDITION- Premier Room Sea View

As a start, the building of my room is inside a small, but beautiful modern villa surrounded by greeneries.

The Bodrum EDITION Villa

I’ve always been intrigued by EDITION hotels’ minimalism approach to luxury. The room is spacious and modern, and the Le Labo fragrance never went away for the 5 nights I’ve stayed. I really enjoy the neutral colors and the stone flooring with wooden walls. Some would find this bland, but each to their own.

The Bodrum EDITION Premier Room Sea View

The bed felt amazing. I think it has a really great balance of firmness and softness. Controls for the whole room’s lights and automated curtains, and universal plugs are conveniently by the bedside.

The Bodrum EDITION Premier Room King Bed

The desk is simple with sleek wooden finish, but large with generous universal outlets and USB outlets. A map of the hotel is provided to help you navigate through the whole property, which is huge with good amount of uphills and downhill movements. As reference, my room (#721) is the number 19 on the map. Might I add that I love the wooden keycard!

The Bodrum EDITION Hotel Map, Personalized Welcome Note, & Keycards

A personalized note by the hotel manager was written to thank me for being a Platinum Elite member. Later on, cookies and a free bottle of white wine was sent to my room!

The Bodrum EDITION Welcome Gift

Nespresso machines and complimentary boxed water are available to use.

The Bodrum EDITION Pantry

A beach bag is provided to put your belongings when you hang by the pool and beach area.

The Bodrum EDITION Beach Bag

There’s also an outdoor balcony where you can enjoy the Aegean Sea view, which is amazing especially at sunset. Even though I wished I was assigned to a more centralized room, the view is simply gorgeous.

The Bodrum EDITION Premier Room Sea View Balcony

The Bodrum EDITION Premier Room- Bathroom

The bathroom comes with an oversized bathtub and separate rooms for toilet and shower. There’s a remote control next to the bathtub to control the curtains for lighter or darker shade for your time in the bathtub. Bath salts are included.

The Bodrum EDITION Sinks

The bath amenities are issued by Le Labo, which is the standard for EDITION hotels. I’ve heard many good things about Le Labo, and they do not disappoint! I love them so much that I’ve asked for extra before checkout so I can take some more home with me.

The Bodrum EDITION Le Labo Bath Amenities

I do appreciate their cheeky toilet jokes .

Le Labo Jokes

Plush hooded bathrobes are available to use, and they’re pretty great! You can purchase them for 150 EUR a piece, if you want.

The Bodrum EDITION- Hotel Layout

The hotel is laid out like a private residential area with separate villas consisting of rooms at different levels. Getting around by foot can be quite the workout since you’d have to take stairs to get to your room or the hotel’s lobby. At the same time, you can really appreciate the details and greeneries surrounding the hotel.

The Bodrum EDITION

To some, this can be a nuisance, but you can request buggy services from your room or the buggy stations that can be found throughout the major sites of the hotel like the beach and restaurants. It can take some time to get used to navigating by yourself since I get lost a few times, but the staff are always happy to guide you to where you need to go.

The Bodrum EDITION Buggy Stations

The Bodrum EDITION- Pool & Beach

Some of the most prominent features of this hotel are the pool and the beach. The infinity pool is set dead center of the whole property overlooking the Aegean Sea. The pool looks stunning with the clean wooden flooring by it, and the blue tiles blend well with the sea. In here, a staff will proactively set up the pool bench of your choice with clean towels. You may also order food and drinks with a menu provided.

Private cabanas by the pool are available for rent, but it made no sense for me to do so.

The Bodrum EDITION Private Cabanas

Although the pool looks stunning, one complaint I have is that it’s not heated. While it was warm enough (early May) to chill by the pool and the beach, it was a bit too cold to swim, especially with the occasional breeze. Thus, I was not able to enjoy it as much. Definitely keep this in mind if you’re trying to book this hotel at off-season rates.

The Bodrum EDITION Infinity Pool

Just below the pool is the beach area. The beach is filled with white sands, but it might be very crowded during peak season because of its size. There are buoys that serve as the hotel’s border and safeguards as it shares the shorelines with other buildings. The beach is very clean, and swimming on it feels safe as there’s no corrals, sponges, seaweed, or trash that could hurt your feet. Just like the pool, you can order food and drinks while enjoying the sun.

The Bodrum EDITION Beach

Just to the left of the beach is where you can find the pier for private cabanas with overwater nets that you can rent.

The Bodrum EDITION Beach Cabanas

You can also rent water sport rides like jetskis and motorboats.

The Bodrum EDITION Beach Club

The Bodrum EDITION- Breakfast & Dining

I’ve indulged myself with the food options at The Bodrum EDITION. There are a few options on food at this hotel. For breakfast, you’ll be eating at the Kitchen , while you can eat lunch and dinner at Morena . There’s a third restaurant called Brava , but it was closed during my stay and will be opened in June.

The Bodrum EDITION Brava Restaurant

Do note that the prices listed on the menu does not include the 13% service fee, which will be calculated on the total of your bill. You can give tips in cash or credit card. Make sure to say that you’d like to tip with your credit card so they’ll use a separate payment processor since you can’t add tip to your final bill.

Breakfast at Kitchen

Breakfast starts at 8AM-12PM. Compared to what I’ve read from reviews from the previous years, breakfast is no longer served to crazy hours like 4PM anymore.

The Kitchen looks very nice, and you can choose between indoor and outdoor seat.

The Bodrum EDITION Kitchen Indoor Dining Area

The breakfast is a la carte, but their biggest menu is the Traditional Turkish Breakfast package that costs 480 TL (~$30 USD) before the 13% service fee. The set includes pastries, jams, cheese plate, fruits, and salad. A choice of fruit juice and a cup of tea or coffee are included. The set is huge, and they alone can leave me feeling full for the whole day if I eat at later times.

The Bodrum EDITION Turkish Breakfast

Other items outside of the package like menemen (scrambled eggs with tomato), fried sucuk (sausage), and the specialty Element juices will be charged per item.

The Bodrum EDITION Menemen

The taste of the breakfast were all good, but I want to address the elephant in the room since the breakfast experience has been highly praised in the past. I simply can’t justify paying around $30 for some pastries, jams, fruits, salads, juice, and a cup of coffee or tea for every single morning even though they were enjoyable and kept me full. If the set was free, then it’d be a different story and would end at a much more positive note. Thus, there are days where I skip breakfast so I can save space for lunch instead, or have smaller breakfast by ordering individual a la carte menu to try out more on different items.

I think the Traditional Turkish Breakfast set is designed more towards couples and families rather than a solo guest such as myself, so I felt that I got less value out of them. Nonetheless, you should definitely try it at least once during your stay!

The Bodrum EDITION Breakfast Menu

Full PDF of in-room dining menu is here . Page 4-5 shows the breakfast menu, which is also the same as what they serve at the Kitchen. Do note that some of the menu may change later on, but they should give good estimates on what to expect.

Lunch at Morena

The restaurant Morena opens at 12:00PM-12:00AM. They’ll have different lunch and dinner menu, with dinner starting at 6:00PM. I didn’t try dinner there, but I had lunch and desserts during my stay.

The Bodrum EDITION Morena

For lunch, I had the nigiri sashimi, ceviche bowl, and the lahmacun.

The Bodrum EDITION Morena Nigiri

The ceviche bowl was great, and it definitely felt like some fancy poke bowl. It was my first time trying out lahmacun, but I thought it was alright.

If you look back on the first picture of the menu, you’ll notice that the nigiri was printed to be 12 pieces, but I only received 8 pieces. I noticed the discrepancies, and the waiter apologized and he made it up by giving me complimentary dessert of my choice and a cup of latte! I ended up choosing the ice cream so I can eat them for later, but once the waiter noticed I couldn’t choose which flavor, he insisted I have two instead. Wow, what a recovery!

The Bodrum EDITION Morena Ice Cream

Morena Beach Club

The Beach Club is a subsidiary to the Morena restaurant where you can order food and drinks while you’re relaxing at the beach or pool area. The menu is a bit different than the main restaurant, but there are some shared items you can still order like the ice cream.

The Bodrum EDITION Morena Beach Club

I came for evening desserts and beach snacking during my stay.

The Bodrum EDITION Devil's Cake

For once, I tried the alcoholic ice cream Raki N’ Roll, which is a cantaloupe ice cream mixed with raki, the national drink of Turkey. It’s a really interesting concept, and I enjoyed it!

I also ordered some sweet potato fries and pistachio baklava ice cream while I was relaxing on the beach. The size of the sweet potato was bigger than I expected, so it felt like a full meal to me.

The Bodrum EDITION Sweet Potato Fries & Pistachio Baklava Ice Cream

Here’s the rest of the menu.

The Bodrum EDITION Morena Beach Club Cocktails Menu

Overall, the food tastes great. But, they are priced on the higher end, especially for Turkey. I think I’d get more value out of eating out in the city of Bodrum, which will be cheaper even after the taxi costs. Expect to spend at least $70 for a day per person on food, accounting for breakfast and dinner or lunch and dinner inside the hotel.

The Bodrum EDITION- Spa & Fitness

Full service spa is available ranging from Turkish hammam to full body massages. Full menu can be found here . I paid 230 EUR for a “Stress Release” 60-minute full body massage. I can’t tell whether that’s worth it or not since I’m not a spa expert, but I felt like splurging and say hello to an Indonesian spa worker that I was referred to by the ones I met at the W Hotel in Istanbul . It did feel good at the end, however. It was also a bit heartwarming to surprise my spa therapist about knowing her friends at the W.

The spa interior is quite gorgeous and true to EDITION style.

The Bodrum EDITION Spa Waiting Area

A plunge pool seems to be used for certain treatments, but I didn’t get a picture of it.

There’s a gym located just behind the beach area. It’s quite spacious and there’s even a rock climbing wall.

The Bodrum EDITION Gym

I had a great time at The Bodrum EDITION overall. The hotel is simply beautiful to look at and be at. It was definitely a great place for me to relax on my last stretch of my 2.5 weeks trip in Turkey. However, I felt that 5 nights were too long, but that is just me. I felt that 3 nights were enough to get the full experience of the hotel.

There are some nitpicks with the hotel. First, I was a bit disappointed about the free breakfast change as they no longer serve free breakfast to those who book with points. I wish there were some transparencies from the hotel and Marriott about this.

While I enjoyed the food a lot, the prices were a bit hard to swallow especially after spending many nights in Turkey eating inexpensive but great food. It’s quite the sticker shock.

I’m also not a fan of the location since it’s far away from the main city of Bodrum. Walkability outside of the hotel isn’t very great either, so it can be a dealbreaker to some travelers. The more secluded location applies to pretty much most, if not all luxury resorts within the Bodrum peninsula, so you’d want to take that into consideration.

Nonetheless, it’s been fun at this hotel. I probably would not return here again, but that’s not a bad thing since I’ll just leave this property as that one-time, but quite memorable stay.

Is The Bodrum EDITION Worth Going As A Solo Traveler?

I originally planned to go with a partner, but unfortunately, he had to leave early. I had no choice but to go since The Bodrum EDITION has a free cancellation policy of up to 14 days before the check-in date. Whether it’s worth it or not definitely depends on the person. Some would find it awkward to be at a beach resort alone, but I didn’t have too much problems with it since I have a purpose of being there with my blog and my credit card points hobby.

Even so, I found that 3 nights would’ve been enough for me. Obviously, that’d be different for everyone. After 3 days, I definitely felt like exploring a lot more within the Bodrum peninsula, but the location felt a bit restrictive to do so, which is my main regret aspect of booking 5 nights in this hotel. I also have to note that the Traditional Turkish Breakfast experience feels designed towards couples and family guests more than solo travelers.

I am here right now for 3 nights, which I agree with you is the perfect length. Breakfast IS included (I am Titanium) with points reservations. A second room for our kids, also with points under my wife’s account (she is Platinum), also has breakfast included. We were welcomed with 4 glasses of sparkling and the ice cream you describe. We ate at Brava las night. The chef Diego Munoz is a worldwide star chef from Perú who used to be Aatrid and Gaston main chef, el Bulli, etc. The restaurant is sold as a Peruvian fusion restaurant. The food was good but nothing great or to remember about. I was dissapointed, and like you say, prices for turkey were quite expensive. But for the US, very normal and comparable. The restaurant though has a great ambiance and is beautiful. You don’t mention the Yalikavak marina only 15 minutes by taxi from the hotel. Taxi ride is $3. Great place with beautiful restaurants, upscale stores and great people watching.

bodrum travel review

Glad that you’re getting the breakfast you deserve! During my stay, it was one of the earliest openings of 2022, and their breakfast policy was rocky at best. Apparently back then, you’d get free breakfast if only you inquire them about it as an “exception courtesy”.

I didn’t think of it during that time since I thought that Turkey was going through rough times financially, and might’ve impacted the hotel’s breakfast policy as well.

But, their breakfast policy for award stays in 2022 might’ve received quite amount of backlash, and hope that they now keep their free breakfast policy to its former glory. Guess I’m one of the guinea pigs lol. But, I was happy about redeeming it before the dynamic pricing and points increase for the hotel kick in.

Bodrum Loft

Bodrum Loft tumbles down a terraced hillside dotted with mature olive trees and overlooking a crisp blue bay. It looks and feels like an exclusive, über-stylish take on a traditional, Aegean village of flat-roofed dwellings and winding alleys. The restrained and elegant property is a waterfront hideaway par excellence.

Situated off a narrow road ending at a small headland on the less developed northern shores of the beautiful, if heavily-developed, Bodrum Peninsula, Loft is a 20-minute drive north of the chic resort town of Bodrum. Public transport is scant, but a taxi into Bodrum, with its many bars, restaurants, clubs and historic sites such as the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and Crusader Castle of St. Peter, is only £6 or so.

Style and Character

Loft possesses a distinctly relaxed ambience. It's set in a giant olive orchard and pine forest, with the buildings covering a mere third of the total area. There are no cars, though electric buggies (summoned by mobile phone) whisk guests from the beach platforms to their accommodation. Cleverly screened and tiered up the hillside, each cubist-style unit has unobstructed sea views – especially beautiful in the soft orange-pink glow of sunset.

Service and Facilities

The resort makes the most of its prime coastal position. Several swimming decks built out into the clear blue waters offer the daytime focus for many guests – each comes with comfortable cream loungers and attentive food and drink service. There’s a spa and wellness centre tucked away in the foliage up the hillside (open from 6am-7pm), offering massages, yoga, Pilates, and personal training sessions. There’s also a sauna and a decent-sized outdoor pool. Installations by well-known artists dot the grounds, and a stylish library is stocked with books about Turkey’s culture. The well-drilled and charming concierge team organise everything from shopping for guests to nanny services.

  • Room service

There are 36 beautifully finished detached villas, in configurations of one- to four-bedroom units, plus a one-bed superior room option. The Turkish architects, Tabanlioğlu, have gone for a simple approach to the interiors – all-white throughout, with recessed shelving, natural wood doors and polished concrete-pebble floors. The minimalist approach is leavened by lamps with hand-blown shades, well-chosen pictures and huge mirrors. Generously proportioned bathrooms have a separate toilet and shower plus changing area. The wooden balconies, all of which have sea views and are screened from neighbours, add to the sense of spaciousness. There’s even a laundry room and kitchen area for each unit.

Food and Drink

Breakfast is at Nobu restaurant, a relaxed outdoor seating area under a canopy of olive branches, complete with the scent of roses and lavender. Try Turkish delicacy çilbir (poached eggs in garlic yoghurt sauce) or buckwheat bircher muesli. Lunches and evenings take place at Paper Moon, which first made its mark in Istanbul under the helm of Milanese chef Giuseppe Pressani. The Italian-international menu is so good that many diners come in from elsewhere on the Bodrum Peninsula to sample the delicious range of pastas and pizzas on Loft’s candle-lit terrace.

Value for Money

Superior double rooms start from €339 (£294) per night in low season, and from €569 (£493) in high. Family villas start from €452 (£392) in low season and from €698 (£605) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi.

Access for guests with disabilities?

The steep hillside location and many steps linking different areas of the complex make Loft unsuitable for guests with disabilities.

Family-Friendly?

Yes. Villas have their own cooking and laundry facilities, nanny rooms and plenty of space. There are both family and adult-only swimming-lounging decks, though the lack of a beach might be awkward for toddlers.

Generali Global Assistance is a well-established name within the travel insurance industry. Ideally, this translates to a travel insurance company with first-class service and coverage. The question for many consumers is simple: Does Generali live up to customers' expectations?

Introduction to Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance

Generali Global Assistance is a reputable travel insurance provider offering multiple tiers of travel insurance coverage at reasonable rates. It offers the standard coverage for trip cancellations, emergency medical expenses, and evacuations. However, Generali falls short of the best travel insurance companies .

While Generali's coverage isn't necessarily bad by any means, it fails to distinguish itself in any way. Its plans are on the cheaper side, but aren't the cheapest. Its offers all the key coverages, but limits aren't exceptionally high. Even its additions are middling, such as its cancel for any reason coverage, which reimburses you for 60% of your nonrefundable costs when most of the best CFAR travel insurance offers 75% coverage.

It's also worth mentioning that Generali is notably strict on its pre-existing condition coverage. Pre-existing condition waivers are only offered with the most expensive Premium plan, and travelers must purchase the plan within 24 hours of their final trip deposit.

Coverage Options Available With Generali

Generali offers three tiers of travel insurance coverage: Premium, Preferred, and Standard. All three travel insurance policies cover baggage delay and loss, travel delay, interruption, cancellation, and missed connection reimbursement benefits.

Here are some of the highlights for each plan to help you better understand what coverage you may need:

The Standard Plan offers the lowest coverage with more budget-friendly premiums. It offers up to 125% reimbursement for trip interruption and up to $1,000 in travel delay reimbursement. Policyholders are limited to $250,000 per person for emergency assistance or transportation. If your baggage is lost, you'd have $1,000 to replace toiletries, clothing, and other belongings.

With the Preferred plan, you can expect 150% reimbursement for inevitable trip interruptions. It also offers travelers up to $1,000 per person for travel delay reimbursement. In addition, the emergency assistance or transportation coverage drops from $1 million to $500,000 per person, and travelers can enjoy up to $1,500 per person if baggage is lost.

Generali's Premium plan offers generous coverage for various scenarios. For example, you'll enjoy up to 175% reimbursement of your trip cost if your travels are interrupted for reasons beyond your control. Generali's Premium plan also includes up to $1,000 per person in travel delay reimbursement and up to $1 million per covered individual for emergency assistance or transportation. Finally, it has up to $2,000 per person in replacement expenses (i.e., toiletries, clothing, and other necessities while you wait for your delayed bag) if your baggage is lost.

You can compare Generali's three plans below.

Additional Coverage Options

Generali offers two add-on services alongside your base travel insurance plan:

Trip cancellation for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage reimburses you for nonrefundable expenses associated with canceling travel you've already paid for. Generali's Premium plan is eligible for CFAR coverage which pays you back for 60% of the total nonrefundable cost of your travel.

You must purchase CFAR coverage on your Premium plan within 24 hours of your initial deposit. However, eligible customers can take advantage of its full benefits, as the name suggests, for any reason. Medical problems, family emergencies, work scheduling issues, or just changing your mind are a few of the reasons Generali might pay a CFAR claim.

Preferred and Standard plans are not eligible for CFAR upgrades. New York residents are also not eligible for CFAR coverage. Generali's website estimates buyers will pay an additional 50% in travel insurance premiums for this rider while the max reimbursement is only 60% of the "penalty amount" (i.e., nonrefundable costs).

Rental car damage protection

Travelers can also purchase rental car coverage alongside their travel insurance policy. Premium plan customers already have up to $25,000 in rental car protection in their policy benefits. Preferred and Standard plan holders can purchase the same coverage amount.

Texas residents are not eligible for rental car coverage. If you're unsure about this rider, we recommend checking the limits of your auto insurance . Generally, U.S.-based auto insurance extends to rental cars. But you may want to supplement your coverage depending on what you already have.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The  average cost of travel insurance  is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate Generali's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Generali travel insurance quotes:

  • Generali Standard: $82.50
  • Generali Preferred: $95.70
  • Generali Premium: $113.47

Premiums for Generali plans are between 2.75% and 3.8% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

Generali provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • Generali Standard: $108.75
  • Generali Preferred: $126.15
  • Generali Premium: $145

Once again, premiums for Generali plans are between 2.7% and 3.6%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Generali quotes:

  • Generali Standard: $271.14
  • Generali Preferred: $304.68
  • Generali Premium: $459.02

Premiums for Generali plans are between 4.5% and 7.7%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage a Generali Policy

To buy a Generali travel insurance policy, you'll need to obtain a quote on its website. You'll need to enter your intended destination, travel duration, number of travelers, state of residence, age of traveler(s), and total cost of your trip.

You'll get quotes for all three Generali plans with general overviews of the policy benefits. You'll also find a detailed coverage description when you click "View Plan Documents." We highly encourage you to read through the terms to fully understand your policy. You can call 888-210-2134 for Generali's customer service line when purchasing a policy.

How to File a Claim with Generali Travel Insurance

To file a claim with Generali's travel insurance division, start at the eClaims portal .

You can also call its claims department at 800-541-3522 for assistance. Generali promises all insurance claim calls will be returned within one business day, and most calls are returned on the same day they are received. Many people reported quick claims processing and reimbursement when we reviewed recent customer feedback.

However, several reviews described waiting over 30 days only to discover Generali had yet to review their claims submission. As such, if you are still waiting to receive a response indicating Generali is working on your claim within a few days, we recommend checking in with customer service.

You'll need to provide supporting documentation for your claim, such as proof of travel delay from the airline or relevant claim checks for lost baggage. Your eClaims portal should give you the necessary details and update you on the ongoing status of your claim. Email the claims team for questions at [email protected] or use the eClaims chatbot for automated assistance.

Generali Customer Service and Claims Experience

Generali's reviews vary wildly depending on the site you check. On its Better Business Bureau page, Generali scores an average of 1.11 stars across 315 reviews. On Trustpilot, it scores an average of 3.5 stars across 419 reviews. Lastly, it has an average of 4.33 stars on SquareMouth across nearly 4,500 reviews.

Many five-star reviews mention how easy it was to purchase a Generali plan and how that plan gave them peace of mind while traveling even if they never had to file a claim. However, most of the mixed reviews come from people who filed claims, reporting long wait times, uncommunicative claims agents, and claim rejections with no explanation.

That said, Generali's customer service team is generally very responsive, particularly on its BBB and Trustpilot pages. Reviews on these pages generally get a response within a week.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. Nationwide Travel Insurance

Nationwide Travel Insurance is part of an extensive network of insurance products. Unlike Generali, you'll recognize any Nationwide Travel Insurance product as it's listed on the same website. In addition, Nationwide Travel Insurance offers bundling discounts, depending on what you're buying. It also sells short-term and long-term insurance plans (like auto and home).

Nationwide has been in business since 1925. Its travel insurance wing offers plans and coverage options to suit diverse travelers' needs. Customer review sites like Trustpilot had reviews complaining about long wait times and claims overlooked with Generali. Nationwide's reviews described long processing times, poor communication, and other claims-based issues.

If you're solely concerned about coverage and rates, Generali is upfront about the fact that its CFAR coverage is exceptionally costly. The company's website seems to imply the CFAR rider's cost is bloated compared to its value. But its basic plans have a few more perks compared to Nationwide Travel Insurance's single-trip plans. And while Nationwide Travel Insurance offers cruise plans and multi-trip options, Generali does not match at the time of this review.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance is another reputable insurance company that has been in business since 1890. Allianz Travel Insurance is one of the biggest names in travel insurance, serving more than 55 million travelers across dozens of countries.

Both Generali and Allianz Travel Insurance offer comprehensive single-trip coverage options for travelers. Generali's website makes reviewing and comparing its three travel insurance plans easy. However, Allianz Travel Insurance offers annual (multi-trip) policies while Generali doesn't. Both companies list rental car protections for some travelers.

Allianz customers leaving reviews online indicate the claims process may be confusing and drawn out. Most importantly, a few reviews cautioned future travelers to come in with complete documentation. In our experience, offering more paperwork rather than less with Allianz Travel Insurance is better.

Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance vs. InsureMyTrip

InsureMyTrip.com is an insurance broker that uses your travel details to collect insurance company bids on your behalf. You can enter your information and get multiple quotes back. As a result, Generali may be one of the insurance providers providing you with a quote through InsureMyTrip. Rates may not match what a provider would offer on its website, though. Broker websites like InsureMyTrip often charge a premium to account for third-party fees or offer discounts as a partner company knows it's competing for customers no matter what. Whatever the case, InsureMyTrip makes it easier to shop for travel insurance. However, it would not process any claims. So for some consumers, it may be more complicated to determine where to go to make a claim against their policies or get help if something goes wrong.
