4 Hawkesbury River Cruises

Hawkesbury River Cruises

Embarking on one of these great Hawkesbury River cruises is a great way to explore the stunning reach of the lower river.

Contemplate scenic waterways, rugged cliffs, trees and wildlife. Savour tasty food, hear entertaining commentaries, and see a dolphin or two if you’re lucky (I can assure you they’re there!) …

The Hawkesbury River is not very far from Sydney, only an hour away. Yet I can’t think of a greater contrast between the tranquil river and the hectic city.

Thinking of it, these Hawkesbury River cruises below offer a fabulous escape from the daily grind.

But which one to choose? Decisions, decisions, decisions…

Make an informed choice by reading below...

1. Riverboat Postman

Hawkesbury River Cruises

Experience one of Sydney’s best day out and most popular cruise on the Hawkesbury River…

The Riverboat Postman is easy to access from Sydney or the Central Coast, and this cruise is excellent value for money.

The Riverboat Postman will transport you into another world; it will take you back in time.

The cruise is, in fact, the last official water-run postman in Australia. Since 1910, they have been delivering mail to the isolated communities between Brooklyn  and Spencer that can only be reached by boat. Today visitors can take part in the experience.

The skippers on the Riverboat Postman give informative, interesting and entertaining stories of the Hawkesbury River and settlements while the boat delivers the mail. The skippers have lived in the area all their lives, so they know a great deal about the river.

It’s interesting to see how people live in the various isolated settlements dispersed around the islands. It’s also amazing these secluded communities today exist so close to a large city.

Together with the interesting tour, you'll be served fresh food…

Soon after departure, they serve their famous Anzac cookie and tea or coffee. Then at midday, they serve a fresh ploughman's lunch with cold meat, salad and bread roll. You can also buy beer or wine at a reasonable price from the bar.

Sit inside the cruise on the lower deck or outside on the upper deck and enjoy the breeze.

Departure : 10 am from Brooklyn Public Wharf and returns at 1.15 pm every weekday except public holidays.

Getting there : Brooklyn Public Wharf is located right beside the Hawkesbury River Station.

D rive or catch the train on the Central Coast & Newcastle line and disembark at Hawkesbury River Station. The cruise and train schedules are well coordinated. (Note: you must climb 100 steps at Hawkesbury River Station.) Allow enough time to find parking if driving.

Prices : Adults $64; seniors $54; school aged children $20.

You can book online here , or call 0400 600 111.

2. Sunday on the Hawkesbury

Hawkesbury River

If you can’t take a cruise on a weekday, experience Sunday on the Hawkesbury . It's run by the same company as the Riverboat Postman: Hawkesbury Cruises.

You'll cruise and learn about the history of these seven islands: Lion, Dangar , Spectacle, Long, Milson, Peat, and Bar Islands, travel past isolated communities that can only be reached by boat, and see the wreck of the HMAS Parramatta.

This cruise serves fresh fish n chips for lunch, and you can buy a glass of wine or beer from the bar.

Departure : 11 am and returns at about 2 pm on Sundays.

Drive or catch the train on the Central Coast & Newcastle line and disembark at Hawkesbury River Station. The cruise and train schedules are well coordinated. (Note: you must climb 100 steps at Hawkesbury River Station.) Allow enough time to find parking if driving.

Prices : Adult $64; senior $54; school aged children $20.

The Hawkesbury River and Aboriginal Sites

The Hawkesbury river is the longest coastal river in NSW. It is 120 k long from where the Nepean and Grose river meet the Hawkesbury. It was a vital source of water and food for the Aborigines and it was critical for the survival of the early British colony living in Sydney. The Aboriginal name for the Hawkesbury river is Dyarubbin meaning wide deep water.

Spectacular Hawkesbury river scenery and secluded beaches only accessible by boat

Learn the rich history of 50,000 years of Aboriginal living off the land..

Explore aboriginal sites, rock carvings and middens

Visitors embark their vessel at the Berowra Waters Public wharf and the tour begins.

We cruise past Calabash Bay where there are a few famous Aussies living in seclusion. This will be followed by a National park area where there is nothing but nature. Last bit of civilisation is at Collingridge Point, named after George Collingridge who was one of the first Europeans to have settled here with his wife Lucy.

Visit to Aboriginal site(s) to inspect rock carvings and possibly middens. The Dharug tribe moved into the Hawkesbury area about 50,000 years ago but the population numbers didn’t really develop much until about 4,000 years ago. There are thousands of aboriginal middens all along the river – old piles of oyster shells and ash from fires.

Riverboat Postman

This is one of the most popular cruises on the Hawkesbury River and for a good reason. You can easily access the  Riverboat Postman  from both Sydney and the Central Coast. The Riverboat Postman will take you on a trip through history, with skippers that tell informative and entertaining stories about the Hawkesbury River and its settlers.

Settlements close to the banks of the Hawkesbury River were some of the first in Australia. Soil close to the river was fertile and the large waterway offered easy transportation between NSW’s most populated areas. To this day, small and secluded communities still thrive on the banks of the river. The Riverboat Postman delivers mail and other essentials to the river-access-only settlements along the Hawkesbury River.

This interesting tour comes with fresh food that’s served on the ship’s upper deck. Soon after departure, you’ll be treated to their famous Anzac cookie with tea or coffee. Lunch includes cold meat, salads and bread rolls. Drinks and alcohols are bought separately from the ship’s well-equipped bar.

The boat departs at 10 am from  Brooklyn Public Wharf  and returns a bit after 1pm every weekday, with the exception of public holidays. If you’re looking for a fun way to experience the marvels of the Hawkesbury River while also learning more about the area’s long history, then hop on the Riverboat Postman and enjoy the trip! With discounted tickets for children and seniors, this is the ideal family outing on a sunny day.

Sunday on the Hawkesbury

You may not be able to take a cruise on a weekday but worry not! To keep everyone happy, Hawkesbury Cruises (the same company behind the Riverboat Postman) runs a  special cruise  on Sundays when there’s no mail to deliver!

On Sunday, The Riverboat postman will take you on a trip to the Seven Islands in the spectacular lower Hawkesbury River. Enjoy stunning views while you learn more about the history and heritage of the river’s beautiful islands: Lion, Dangar, Spectacle, Long, Peat, and Milson Islands.

This cruise follows a different path as it travels on the opposite end of the river, meaning that you can enjoy both cruises without much overlap. The cruise lasts a bit over three hours and will take you on an amazing journey throughout Australia’s most beautiful waterway. The views of the ocean behind  Lion Island  are absolutely stunning so make sure you bring your camera with you!

A fantastic fish ’n’ chips lunch is included with your ticket and you can buy drinks on the boat’s fully licensed bar. The parking area fills up extremely quickly so make sure you allow extra time to find a park if driving. Don’t stress yourself out. Arrive by train to avoid stressful situations and enjoy the spectacular cruise without having to worry about anything else!

Hawkesbury Cruise Boat

Palm Beach and Hawkesbury River Cruises

This is a  long cruise  that includes several stops, giving you the opportunity to explore more great locations while still cruising along the beautiful Hawkesbury River. The boat travels from Palm Beach to Cowan Creek, but drops off and picks up passengers at Patonga, Cottage Point Inn and Bobbin Head. It departs at 11am and returns to Palm Beach at 3:30pm.

Patonga is only 30 minutes from Palm Beach across Broken Bay. Patonga is the most isolated beach town on the Central Coast. You’ll find a small art gallery,  The Boathouse Hotel , and a popular seafood shop. You can go swimming, fishing or kayaking in this relaxing beach town. There are also plenty of scenic walks and hikes around the area. You have approximately three and a half hours until the ferry returns to take you back to Palm beach at 3pm.

Cottage Point  is perfect for a fresh meal beside the water. If you want to eat here, you’ll need to make sure you book early and that you call to let the owners know you’ll be arriving by ferry. You only have about two hours to complete your meal before the ferry returns to pick you up on its way back.

Bobbin Head is a beautiful spot in between the Berowra Valley and Garigal National parks. You can picnic in the wider area around the river, but keep in mind that you only have an hour or so before the ferry returns to pick you up.

This long cruise runs Friday to Monday but also operates daily during school holidays. You can catch the ferry at any of the three locations mentioned above. Tickets are relatively cheap and the ride itself is slow but enjoyable, giving you plenty of time to take everything in and really enjoy your time on board. You don’t have to book ahead but make sure you bring cash here too.

Palm Beach, NSW

Aboard the beautiful Lady Kendall, you’ll be served morning tea as well as lunch and afternoon tea, but you’ll have to buy your own drinks and alcohol from the bar.

You’ll cruise past Lion Island, Barrenjoy Head,  Ku-Ring-Gai National Park , Dangar Island, Brooklyn, and  the wreck of Parramatta . Hawkesbury River

aerial of bridge over hawkesbury river surrounded by greenery

Hawkesbury River: Stunning from source to sea

Shucking, fishing, boating, paddling and pearling: they all happen on the majestic Hawkesbury River. Beginning where the Grose and Nepean Rivers join at Yarramundi, flowing into the Pacific Ocean at Broken Bay, the Hawkesbury River delivers a good time from source to sea.

The wide green river stretches 145 kilometres, hugged by sandstone cliffs, tiny communities accessible only by water, timber piers in oyster leases, and puttering boats in no rush to get anywhere. It links it to many picturesque waterways along the way, as well as bush reserves and creeks like Piles and Popran. Not to forget the stunning Somersby Falls and car-less carefree village of Dangar Island. This bucolic, meandering river houses a vibrant seafood sector, weaves through untouched bush landscape and is a haven for outdoor adventures. What makes this twisting, tapering river so special? It feels a world away but is tantalisingly close to Sydney.

Words: Lyndsey Douglas of WritersWho in collaboration with Love Our Waterways.

Responsible boating on the mighty Hawkesbury-Nepean

This river system supplies clean drinking water to five million residents of Greater Sydney, with Mangrove Creek Dam providing 93% of the Central Coast's water. In addition to being essential for humans, the Hawkesbury-Nepean River system boasts diverse environments teeming with vital biodiversity. Mangrove forests, saltmarshes, and seagrass beds, serve as sanctuaries for endangered species and delicate ecosystems.

Attracting over 100,000 boat licence holders and 40,000 registered recreational vessels, it’s important that boaters support the health of the river. After all, the estuary is also key to the thriving "blue economy" of the region: aquaculture, fishing, and tourism . If you enjoy eating oysters, prawns, yabbies and fish, you’ll want to protect the habitat in which they grow.

  • Use boat ramps for launching watercraft to preserve the foreshore
  • Navigate cautiously at a slow speed in seagrass areas
  • Responsibly manage fuel, oil, and liquid waste to prevent contamination of the ecosystem.

The Hawkesbury-Nepean River

Watch this video to meet the mighty Hawkesbury-Nepean River system and discover the collaborative management work taking place with Central Coast Council, Hornsby Shire Council, Hawkesbury City Council, Ku-ring-gai Council, Northern Beaches Council and The Hills Shire Council to monitor this ecosystem's health for generations to come.

Karen and the team were wonderful from 'go to woe'. Excellent service, great boat, easy to drive and despite bad weather, we still had a great time.

Can highly recommend!

What's Included..

There is no license required as our vessels do not exceed 10 knots. We show you a short safety dvd then provide a full briefing on board the vessel. We drive you out from our marina to the main part of the river.  Before leaving you, we ensure you are comfortable in handling the vessel as you head off on the Hawkesbury River. For your peace of mind, we drive you back into the marina at the conclusion of your hire.

All our vessels have flush toilet systems with holding tanks on board. No effluent goes into the river.

All vessels are equipped with USB ports and an inverter (except the Weekenders) suitable for recharging mobile phones, laptops and cameras. Please note: You are NOT able to plug in 12v fridge, hair drying equipment, straighteners, coffee machines or cooking appliances.

All our vessels have generous sunshades, easy to operate bbqs, comfortable outdoor furniture, built in eskies and bait/fishing tables.

There are no hidden charges like cleaning, gas or environmental pumpout on top of your rental cost. The only additional charge is the fuel you use. The vessel leaves with full tanks, they are filled up on your return and you are charged for what you use.

Our vessels come with a complimentary row dinghy that you tow behind. This allows you to access the shore. Alternatively you can upgrade to an easy to use motorised dinghy.

There is secure car parking in our sealed car park which is locked at night (two parking spaces for the Elite, Homecruiser, Fisherman and Family vessels, with one parking space for all other vessels). There is also ample street parking in the immediate vicinity of our marina.

Our vessels are fitted with back to base GPS tracking as a safety precaution.

All vessels have quality sound systems.

Embark on a houseboat holiday

Once described by a colonial judge as the ‘Nile of New South Wales’, the tranquil waters of the Hawkesbury River are perfect for a weekend escape or short break. A wonderful way to relax and soak up the natural beauty of the river is a houseboat holiday. Operating for 40-plus years,  Able Hawkesbury River Houseboats  at Wisemans Ferry provide 10 types of houseboats for hire to suit various budgets, from two-berth houseboats to luxury houseboats with heated rooftop spas. Steer upstream to Windsor and downstream past pretty bushland wilderness to places such as Spencer, Berowra Waters and Brooklyn. A dded bonus : you don’t need a boat licence to hire and captain a vessel.

Cast a line

Spanning 470km, the Hawkesbury-Nepean is the longest coastal catchment in NSW, meaning there are plenty of places along the river and tributaries to cast a line. Best known for producing some of the state’s largest mulloway (fish exceeding 1.6m and 40kg have been taken from these waters), the waterways are also known for bream, snapper, tailor, dusky flathead, Australian salmon and whiting. Also, come winter, plenty of keen anglers brave the cold to chase the mysterious hairtail in locations like Cowan Creek. There are boat ramps at various locations, including Governor Phillip Park, Parsley Bay and Wisemans Ferry, and a number of companies offer boat hire, such as  Berowra Waters Boat Hire  and Hawkesbury Afloat .

Tour a pearl farm

The pristine waters of the Hawkesbury River are home to the only pearl farm on the east coast of Australia.  Broken Bay Pearl Farm  specialises in growing the rare akoya pearls, prized around the world for their outstanding lustre, and the private four-hour tour immerses you in the intricacies of pearl farming. Enjoy the breeze on your face as you take to the water to see how pearls are grown and harvested, before returning to solid land to learn how the value of each pearl is assessed. You will even get hands-on experience grading pearls yourself, before choosing a pearl of your own to take home.

Paddle out on a kayak

Kayaking is a lovely way to enjoy the river. Hire your own from  Hawkesbury River Kayaks , perfectly situated to set off for a few hours paddling around Dangar Island, or take a weekend to travel upstream and camp at a secluded beach, exploring Jerusalem Bay and enjoying lunch at picturesque Cottage Point along the way. If you plan ahead , you can book the company’s Riverbend Cottage for an evening, located halfway between Brooklyn and Berowra Waters, allowing you to take a leisurely pace knowing there’s a comfy bed and shower waiting for you at the end of the day.

If you’d rather have the experts show you the way, join a guided tour with  Southern Cross Kayaking . Departing from various locations, including Colo River and Calabash Bay, the tours run for four hours and travel around 8km, passing by scenic ‘water only’ access homes, picturesque creeks and mangrove forests en route. As you venture downstream, the guides will teach you about the area’s history, and point out birds and wildlife, before stopping for refreshments.

Get the adrenaline pumping

For thrillseekers, the Hawkesbury is a popular waterway for a range of water sports.  Jet Ski Safaris  are the only tour company to offer unlicensed jet ski tours – whizz past islands and under towering sandstone cliffs, before stopping off at Spencer for a drink and a snack (trust us, you will have worked up an appetite after tackling all those hairpin bends). Black Diamond Wakeboarding School is owned and operated by rider/coach Scotty Kell, who tailors lessons for families, corporate groups and large groups of friends looking for a fun time out on the water. Meanwhile waterskiing, barefooting and knee-boarding lessons are available with Hawkesbury Watersports , catering to all skill levels from first-timers to advanced.

Cruise the waters on a paddlewheeler

Operating for over 35 years from historic Windsor, join your host Ian and his friendly crew aboard the  Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler  to step back in time to the 1800s when steamships travelled the waterway. While taking in the peace and tranquillity of the river, guests are served a first-class meal and refreshments, and given live commentary on the history of the boat, river and local legends. Be sure to visit the wheelhouse during the 2.5-hour tour to chat with the skipper.

Note: cruises are currently on hold due to damage to the area's wharves during the recent floods.

Join the postman on a mail run

For the residents who live along some of the Hawkesbury River’s more far-flung islands and riverfronts, the water is the only way in and out. For more than 100 years, the  Riverboat Postman  has been delivering mail to these isolated homes, and these days visitors can join the idyllic mail run. On the two-hour trip from Brooklyn wharf, you’ll go past Dangar Island; former mental asylum islands Peat Island and Milson Island; luxury glamping accommodation at Bar Island; plus tiny riverside neighbourhoods, lush mangroves, oyster farms, and forested escarpments. The skippers are local with plenty of stories to tell, and onboard service includes a delicious ploughman’s lunch.

Eat oysters straight from the water

Want to taste the freshest oysters of your life? Look no further. With  Sydney Oyster Farm Tours , seafood lovers can venture out onto the Hawkesbury’s sparkling waters to learn about oyster cultivation, and enjoy an oyster and prawn tasting at your private in-water table – white tablecloth and waterproof suit included! The experience includes a boat ride to the oyster leases, a guided oyster farm tour and a shucking lesson – and guests are encouraged to bring their own bottle of wine or sparkling to accompany their lunch.

A russian land tour or a river cruise - which is better.

This decision completely depends on your preferred way of travelling. During the Russian river cruise you will not only visit the two largest cities of Russia, but also small towns and villages along the route and you will have a chance to participate in master classes, learn a little Russian language and dive into local Russian culture and hospitality. For those who prefer custom-made programs and more free time in the cities of their choice we recommend a land tour, both are excellent options. To find out more about the differences click here .

Do I need a visa for a Russian River Cruise?

Cape Cod small-ship cruise packs in history, scenery and 'Jaws'

hawkesbury river cruise

EDGARTOWN, Mass. – “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

A terrified Chief Brody uttered one of the most memorable quotes in American cinematic history in the 1975 thriller “Jaws,” a watershed movie that was filmed here on Martha’s Vineyard , an affluent island 7 miles south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Chief Brody’s panicked assertion was true, if you’re trying to catch and kill a 25-foot great white shark with a ravenous appetite for sun-seeking beachgoers.

But when it comes to exploring the small towns, bays and inlets off the coastline of Cape Cod – and other coastal regions in the United States – bigger boats are about as useful as a rod and reel in trying to ensnare a horrifying 3-ton sea monster in Steven Spielberg's movie.

What is considered coastal cruising?

Coastal cruising is one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments. It involves sailing on small ships – typically carrying 100-200 guests – close enough to shore that passengers can see land throughout the voyage. The segment is geared toward older, well-heeled Americans who want to stay fairly close to home while visiting less touristy ports that the big ships can’t get to.

Coastal ships have a shallow draft that enables them to dock in small harbors without having to ferry their passengers ashore on tenders. They offer the convenience and intimacy of riverboats coupled with the versatility and stability to sail in the open seas. On some itineraries, they also traverse rivers, lakes and canals.

I recently sailed on a one-week coastal cruise around Cape Cod on the 100-passenger “catamaran-inspired” American Eagle. The four-deck ship was christened in August 2023 and is part of the fleet of American Cruise Lines , the largest river cruise line in the U.S. that is rapidly expanding into coastal cruising.

The Connecticut-based company isn’t just dipping its toes in the coastal-cruising market. It has seven coastal-cruise ships on the water with plans for two more ships to begin sailing by the end of the year and two more launching in 2025. Its newest vessel, American Liberty, will take its inaugural voyage Thursday, Aug. 15, from Providence, R.I., visiting several ports in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

“Our newest small ships allow guests to cruise within sight of land and enjoy the same atmosphere found aboard our riverboats, making our coastal itineraries a natural transition for any river cruiser,” said Charles B. Robertson, American Cruise Lines’ president and CEO, whose father founded the company in 1972.

American Cruise Lines owns its own shipyard in Maryland’s Eastern Shore and all of its ships are U.S.-flagged, which allows for itineraries that don’t include a foreign stop. An American law requires foreign-flagged ships sailing in U.S. waters to stop in at least one non-U.S. port of call.

Besides New England, other U.S. coastal itineraries include the Chesapeake Bay with port stops in Maryland and Virginia, a Southeast cruise that visits Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, GA., trips around the coastline of Florida, the Puget Sound in Washington and Alaska’s Inside Passage.  American Cruise Lines also owns Pearl Seas Cruises, which has one coastal ship – the 210-passenger foreign-flagged Pearl Mist – now sailing the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada.

Rates for coastal cruises are comparable to high-end river cruises and can get pricey.  Depending on the cruise line and what amenities are included – like roundtrip air, a pre-cruise hotel, an open bar onboard and shore excursions – fares can easily exceed $1,000 per person per day.  A high percentage of cabins on coastal ships come with private balconies.

All told, American Cruise Lines plans to grow its fleet to 12 coastal cruise ships in the coming years as part of its “Project Blue” series.  Add that its stable of 10 riverboats plying the Mississippi, Columbia, Snake and other U.S. rivers, and the cruise line says it now has a footprint in 35 states.

Cape Codder cruise ports: Provincetown, Plymouth

The Cape Codder cruise on the American Eagle started and ended in Boston Harbor. The itinerary offered a chance to become immersed in the history related to the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World in 1620 aboard the Mayflower and their encounters with the Wampanoag people, who have been living in New England for more than 12,000 years.

We reached our first port, Provincetown, on the northern tip of Cape Cod, just four hours after leaving Boston. I had thought the Pilgrims first landed at Plymouth Rock, but they actually spent five weeks in Provincetown before settling in Plymouth, about 80 miles west across Cape Cod Bay.

Provincetown, known as a boisterous party town, has a year-round population of less than 4,000 that swells to 60,000 during the summer. I climbed the Pilgrim Monument for a spectacular view of the town and harbor. A museum at the monument has a replica of the landmark Mayflower Compact. Signed by the Pilgrims in Provincetown Harbor, the compact is the first document to establish self-government in the New World.

In Plymouth I toured a full-scale reproduction of the Mayflower, the ship which brought 102 Pilgrims from England to America.  Their arduous journey across the Atlantic took 66 days.  From the American Eagle, I walked to the nearby Plymouth Rock, where some believe the Pilgrims first set foot in the New World.  While there is no historical evidence to confirm that, the rock remains an important symbol representing the determination of the nation's early settlers.

We also visited Plimouth Patuxet, a living museum that features a recreated 17th-century Pilgrim village. There are “historical interpreters” dressed as Pilgrims at the site, who interact with visitors as if it were 1627. They stay in character, so it’s best not to ask – as I made the mistake of doing – if the site had Wi-Fi.

Next up: Buzzards Bay, Hyannis, Newport RI

From the port of Buzzards Bay, I took an excursion to Hyannis to visit the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which showcases the Kennedy family’s deep connection to Cape Cod. The Kennedys had several summer homes in nearby Hyannis Port. The compound, closed to visitors, is still the home of Ethel Kennedy, the 96-year-old widow of Robert F. Kennedy.

It's hard to find a place in America that oozes more money than Newport, R.I., known for its rich sailing history and grandiose homes.

By the turn of the 20th century, many of the nation’s wealthiest families – including the Vanderbilts and Astors – built summer houses in Newport. Today, mansions are owned by the likes of Jay Leno, Judge Judy and billionaire software-magnate Larry Ellison.

Martha's Vineyard, where 'Jaws' was filmed

The island of Martha’s Vineyard, often called “The Vineyard,” is another popular summer hangout for the rich and famous.

We visited Edgartown, a town that took on the stage name of “Amity” during the filming of “Jaws.” We also stopped by the spectacular Aquinnah Cliffs – with its colorful clay cliffs carved by glaciers – on the northwestern tip of the island.

As for sharks, it turned out that it was indeed safe to go back in the water again. The only sharks I encountered on the cruise were emblazoned on T-shirts and other souvenirs in Martha’s Vineyard gift shops.
