Even so, there's no better way to get to know the nation's capital than with an expert. City Cruises – Monuments and Sightseeing Tour
Price: Adults from $35; kids from $23 Duration: 1 hour
After you've toured the monuments by foot, bike or bus, why not admire them from the water? City Cruises offers one-way and round-trip departures from Alexandria, Virginia and Georgetown. Along the way, you'll see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Washington Monument, the Arlington Memorial Bridge and more, all while enjoying prerecorded commentary describing the monuments. Visitors appreciate the narration but note that engine noise sometimes drowns out the recording.
During the warm-weather months, the cruise departs daily. Throughout the rest of the year, cruises usually only operate on the weekends. One-way trips last 45 minutes each way. Round-trip journeys span just under two hours. The company offers several other sightseeing cruises, including one that drops off visitors at Mount Vernon.

It’s important to realize that there is no “best” order to see the monuments in DC. It’s really up to you and what you want to see first. However, if you’re looking for a logical and efficient route, an Old Town Trolley Tour is a fantastic way to see all of the best monuments in Washington. By following the tour, you will be able to see all of the important monuments in a logical order. Start with the National Mall, home to some of the most iconic monuments in DC, such as the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Continue your monument tour with a visit to the World War II Memorial. This memorial honors the 16 million Americans who served in World War II and the more than 400,000 who gave their lives. It’s a beautiful and moving tribute that will leave you feeling very patriotic.
You can finish up with a stop at Arlington National Cemetery, where many of our nation’s heroes are buried, such as John F. Kennedy and the unknown soldiers from various wars.

Rated 5 Stars on TripAdvisor, Yelp, & Facebook!
I'm envious of you. If you are reading this you are very close to experiencing a glorious day with DC insiders. My rating of 5 stars is not accurate, I'm bucking this system. We did the DC in a day on wheels. It felt extravagant ( in a good way) , thorough and delightful. This tour is the whole enchilada. Thanks for making this day the highlight of our Mother & Daughter DC trip.
Dc tours from the minute we booked was fantastic at tailoring our itinerary to what we wanted to see. She even put together some great suggestions for us do to independently the next day. Dc tours is a company with real heart who want you to love the city as much as they do and we certainly do. We hope to return and wouldn’t hesitate using them, you can see why they are the number 1 tour company.
Incredible tour for our family. Bo efficiently communicated with us and helped plan the 6 hour tour for my husband and I and our four sons. Becca was our guide and she was amazing. She was so informative and was able to answer all our questions. Loved our day and could not recommend these guys more.
Look no further for a fun, entertaining and informative tour. I am a local and brought two out of town friends on this electric bike tour. We all enjoyed it so much and even the local learned some fun facts!! We were lucky enough to have our tour led by the high energy owner. His enthusiasm did not wane throughout the entire 3.5 hour tour! Highly recommend!
This was my first trip to DC and it was the if it were not for this tour I would not have seen as much of the city as I did. I plan on coming back and I will definitely do this tour again. The bikes were fun and easy and handle. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the landmarks and the surrounding area. This is the best way to see DC.
Becca took care of everything! She was so accommodating to my small disabilities & the car was very comfortable. We covered so many stops over 6 hours. I still am processing the wonderful week we've had in D.C. I am 65 years old & never thought I'd make this trip.
I had been to DC many times in my life, but this trip with my 16 year old son was one of the best I’ve had because Bo was an amazing tour guide. The bikes were very easy to use and helped us to maximize our time to see as much as possible while tapping into Bo’s stories and narration of the monuments.

More about washington, d.c., why visit washington d.c., historical sites.
As the seat of American democracy, Washington, D.C. abounds with historic landmarks. The city nods to its political heritage with a range of government buildings, shrines to those taken by war, and abodes of president’s past and present. Your journey to America’s capital city will be a civics lesson like no other.
White House
Built in increments between 1792 and 1829, this site is perhaps one of the most iconic in D.C. Covering an impressive 18+ acres, it’s hard not to feel the power and prestige of this government structure. On a visit to the White House Visitor Center, you’ll get a comprehensive overview of the history of the building and the presidents who resided there.
U.S. Capitol Building
See the site where Congress convenes to discuss, debate and write U.S. law. Take a guided tour here and better acquaint yourself with the inner-workings of representative democracy. Political junkie or not – this storied building will certainly capture your interest while in D.C.
Arlington National Cemetery
Visit this moving cemetery - the final place of rest for more than 400,000 military personnel and their families. Visitors can embark on a narrated tour that includes the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Kennedy gravesites. Reflect on the sacrifice and service of these incredible men and women.
Mount Vernon
Discover the beloved home of the first U.S. president, George Washington, in nearby Mount Vernon, Virginia. Wander the beautiful plantation grounds he adored and tour his residence as you admire several 18th-century artifacts. This is a top historic highlight for many of our guests.
Attractions
Washington, D.C. is a bustling city that captivates history buffs, foodies, art lovers and musicians. The city accommodates a variety of interests and as such, offers visitors several types of enticing attractions. These are some suggested ways to take in even more of D.C.
Washington National Cathedral
This magnificent church took 83 years to complete and has been host to poignant moments in America’s history like state funerals, presidential inaugural masses and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last sermon. Admire the beautiful craftsmanship of the cathedral as you learn more about its history during a docent-led tour.
Ford’s Theater
This is the infamous site where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on that fateful night in 1865. Tour the theatre and hear about the timeline of events that transpired as John Wilkes Booth’s plan unfolded. Though it is a bit eerie, we think this site is worth a visit.
Smithsonian National Zoological Park
Talk to the animals at this 163-acre zoo. See giant pandas, Asian elephants and Sumatran tigers as you sip on the park’s Bird Friendly Coffee (coffee that is shade-grown and non-disruptive to migratory songbirds’ habitat). We think this is a fun way to have a wild afternoon in D.C.
Old Town Alexandria
Head to this charming community nestled along the Potomac River. Enjoy wandering the cobblestone streets, view the historic Colonial architecture, and stop at some of the trendy boutiques. This quaint neighborhood is rich in history and beauty.
One of the biggest selling points for those wanting to visit D.C. is its museums. The Smithsonian provides some of the most impressive collections in the world, and many of the museums have the added benefit of being free. Immerse yourself in D.C. and take a tour of these cultural sites.
Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum
Catch a glimpse of the famous Wright 1903 Flyer, the Spirit of St. Louis, and the Apollo 11 command module Columbia at this Smithsonian museum. See exhibitions that detail how feats in aviation occurred as you marvel at missiles, aircrafts and lunar modules. Cap your tour here by visiting the gift shop for some astronaut ice cream.
National Museum of American History
Discover artifacts that range from the dresses of the First Ladies to the flag that inspired the national anthem at this history-focused museum. You’ll note that the three floors are thematically organized, which makes the experience less overwhelming and easier to find exactly what interests you. We think this is a great way to become better educated on the American story.
Smithsonian Natural History Museum
This museum is a favorite for youngsters and those young at heart. Featuring amazing artifacts like the Hope Diamond, Easter Island heads and mummies, this cultural site is a must-see. We suggest taking a stroll through the butterfly pavilion to see some of the rarest living butterflies in the world.
National Gallery of Art
See masterpieces from the likes of da Vinci, Monet and Van Gogh at this large gallery. Travel through the underground walkway that connects you to the gallery’s two buildings which house hundreds of exquisite works of art. Collectors and those appreciative of fine artistry will be enchanted by the collections found here.

Customer Reviews
Both tours with Joanna & Cesar were excellent! We saw more than we could have done any other way and more importantly understood more of what we were looking at!
We appreciated Nick’s humor, enthusiasm, and knowledge. He made the daytime and the night tours very enjoyable!
Ralph was fantastic! He interacted with everyone in a personal way and made the tour great!
My husband was skeptical at first since it was a bus tour and I was worried we wouldn’t get enough time at our stops, BUT it was great! I felt like there was a perfect amount of time to look and take pictures and even, when available, to stop at the gift shops. Our guide was informative and dependable. The complimentary water was great and we appreciated the access to free ponchos since it was a heavy sprinkle off an on during our tour. The bus was great, the perfect temperature and the seats are comfortable.
Did it on my first day in DC and gave me ideas on what to revisit or what other venues to go to. The guide Christopher was very knowledgeable and came over excellently.
We had a wonderful tour with Joey! She was knowledgeable, engaged, funny, friendly and a terrific host. We highly recommend this tour. Our only regret is that we didn’t have another day to spend in DC sightseeing!

Private D.C. Tours Reviews
Curious to know what our happy customers think about Washington Walks tours? We've been featured in Travel + Leisure and have pages of 5-star reviews on Trip Advisor .
"David led an excellent tour of Eastern Market/Capitol Hill for my undergraduate class. No question the students posed stumped him—and he wowed them (and me) with intriguing details about the sites around us. Logistics were seamless, as well: Washington Walks was responsive, flexible, and within our budget. Really a great (and Covid-safe!) way to kick off a semester-long course on the city and to get my students geared up to keep exploring!" —Professor Meredith Weiss, SUNY Albany

We could not have asked for a better tour for our veterans. There were over 60 of us and three were in wheelchairs. We had a large new bus plus a smaller shuttle vehicle that had a wheel chair lift. Our personal guide was so very personable and we had a good time with her. Her knowledge of Washington's history was amazing and all delivered with a sense of humor. We had a wonderful time and Excellent helped us provide great memories for our Vietnam Vets. D company!!
I used Excellent Tours for shuttle transportation for guests for my son's Bar Mitzvah. They were very easy to work with for the planning and the driver was punctual and professional. I was very pleased and would highly recommend Excellent Tours. I couldn't ask for a better experience!
Lives up to the name Excellent! Complete professionalism all the way around. We used their buses, vans, and SUV's to transport a few hundred people around the Hill and to the Mall. They were on time and knew the fastest and best routes to take to get our people where they needed to be. And they were significantly cheaper than other bus companies I had called.

The best cocktail bars in Washington, DC
A bold collection of speakeasies, rooftop bars and hotel haunts are turning Washington, DC into a mecca for mixologists. With an inventive and unique list of libations, this city is quickly becoming a destination for cocktail connoisseurs.
Come for the Capitol, stay for the cocktails. Washington, DC invented the Gin Rickey, after all, but these days, the US capital is harnessing this heritage with a wave of innovative cocktail bars and meccas of molecular wizardry. From sleek hotel lounges, like The Pembroke, to moody, subterranean speakeasies, like Allegory, there's been lots of new openings and refreshed menus in recent years, with mixologists utilising unusual ingredients like hay-smoked bee larvae and almond blossoms. Here's our selection of the most atmospheric, creative cocktail spots to visit.
1. The Wells
Juniper junkies converge on Capitol Hill for this gin-centric cocktail lounge. The intimate bar is backed by a glass menagerie of gin: London dry, citrus-forward Japanese bottles, oak-aged varieties and smooth, small-batch American sips. These are the stars of seasonal cocktails like Let the Beet Drop, a concoction of yoghurt gin, red beet, honey, egg white and lemon. The design is just as spirited: The Wells is swathed in green, while carrot-coloured banquettes edge alcoves, the floor is tiled in honeycomb and a planetary-like light fixture is strung with copper. Pair drinks with elevated snacks like beluga caviar and chips or wagyu skewers with spicy habanada.
Bartender’s choice: The Martini is a staple. The addition of olive oil in the gin allows for the sweetness of olives to play with the botanicals of gin, while Cocchi Americano smooths out the edges. “It’s an olive oil cake, and it’s all grown up,” says lead bartender Alex Pisi.
2. Allegory
Molecular magic is made at Allegory. You just have to find it first: the sleek speakeasy is hidden behind a black door in the lobby library of progressive hotel Eaton DC. This dimly-lit den spans leather banquettes, a glowing semi-circular bar and moody black pendant lights. A series of magical realist murals by Erik Thor Sandberg line the walls, fusing whimsical Alice in Wonderland themes with the story of civil rights activist Ruby Bridges. The innovative cocktail menu is inspired by the artwork, and bar bites include artisanal cheese plates and crispy pork bánh mì.
Bartender’s choices: Beat of the Drums is Allegory’s version of the classic margarita, blending agave spirits with a Mesoamerican orgeat and fermented huckleberries, then garnished with a piece of huckleberry popcorn. Other inventions, such as the viridescent Garden of Live Flowers (made with gin, rhum agricole, aloe, snap peas, cardomom and coconut black pepper) are also well worth a try.
3. Silver Lyan
Bring your bucks to this historic former national bank. Its current guise is the grande dame Riggs Washington DC hotel, where the underground cocktail bar is built into an old vault. Silver Lyan’s decor reflects its heritage: brass detailing, stately pillars, oversized art deco lights and plush red velvet. At the helm is award-winning mixologist, Ryan Chetiyawardana (known as Mr Lyan), whose cutting-edge cocktails use unique ingredients, such as tart riberry, arrowroot tea and mulberry soda to name a few.
Bartender’s choice: Splurge on the Silver Service Martini. Choose one of four different styles of martini, poured into an elegant John Jenkins vintage-style glass. The drink is served with Castelvetrano olives, house-pickled onions, a lemon twist and a freshly shucked oyster. “My personal favourite version is the Ford’s 50:50,” says Vlad Novikov, head of bars for Riggs.
4. Bresca
With one beaming Michelin star, this Parisian-style bistro on 14th Street may be serious about sustenance, but it’s equally as playful. Inside are pops of perky yellow, booths of deep blue and a living wall swollen with earthy moss. Pull up a pew at the airy bar lined with wooden stools, where Bresca's cocktail menu, Myths & Legends, is a work of art — it whimsically weaves stories with colourful illustrations and innovative seasonal sips.
Bartender’s choices: In the Circle is a twist on the traditional Manhattan, using culinary techniques to accentuate the vanilla, dark chocolate and spice notes of the D’Ussé Cognac and Michter’s Rye. It’s batched and sous vide with earthy shiitake mushrooms to complement the sweeter local squash cordial. Alternatively, pair a cavier tart with Flora & Fire, a subtle, smoky tipple made with mezcal, cachaca, Aperol, yellow chartreuse and strawberry fuse.
5. Off The Record
Paint the town red at Off the Record. This iconic basement boozer in The Hay-Adams hotel is dripping in the dramatic: deep rouge crawls from tufted banquettes to the walls and lampshades. A wedding cake ceiling is strung with chandeliers, while caricatures of political figures adorn the walls. Situated on the edge of Lafayette square, to the north of the White House, this bar is a hallowed haunt of savvy locals. Pair its sprawling list of scotches and signature cocktails with bites like lobster rolls, burgers or yellowfin tuna tartare.
Bartender’s choice: Served in a collins glass, the Lowrider is a refreshing grapefruit cocktail made with Ilegal Mezcal, lime, Aperol, Bittermens Hellfire Habanero Shrub, Fever Tree Pink Grapefruit and Tajín. “This cocktail is a tantalising way for lovers of the Paloma to spice up their game,” suggests bar manager Rachel Sergi.
6. VUE Rooftop
The glistening crown atop Hotel Washington, this swish 11th-floor rooftop bar boasts fantastic panoramas of the city’s skyline, including views of the White House and stately Washington Monument. The interior is pared-back luxury: dark wood, billowy light fixtures and intimate booths. This is a space that seamlessly stretches from brunch to beats as live DJs play into the night. Soak up the Sazeracs with crispy calamari, lamb burgers or creamy burrata on rustic bread.
Bartender’s choice: Power to the Peaches blends white peach and rosemary Grey Goose Essence, which is complemented by Cointreau, chamomile, honey, lemon and a refreshing Chandon Garden Spritz. Alternatively, try one of the various seasonal cocktails like the Bi-partisan Blend, VUE's take on an espresso martini with horchata and chicory pecan bitters.
7. Jane Jane
Step into a Southern hospitality daydream. On 14th Street NW, retro-style Jane Jane may be small, but it has big energy. Plaid blue mosaic tiles trace the floor and bar, there are walnut-wood walls, vintage-inspired cocktail wallpaper and forest green pendant lights and booths. With only 32 seats, the intimate vibe is a cocktail party at a pal’s place which is welcoming, unpretentious and playful. Two dozen cocktails are organised by liquor, five of which are house varieties, while comfort bites are inspired by the owner’s Southern hospitality. Try the pickled okra, pimento cheese or Jane’s caviar with trout roe, creme fraiche and potato chips.
Bartender’s choice: Should We Be Bad is the bar’s take on a classic espresso martini, replacing vodka with bourbon and adding velvet falernum for extra depth and body. Meanwhile, the jazzy Jane Jane Mule, where bourbon, fino sherry, lemon, mint, ginger beer and Angosturra are swirled on the rocks, is also well worth a try.
8. Hill Prince
This H Street haunt is the quintessential neighbourhood bar: convivial, affordable and pouring top-notch tipples. Set in a 100-year-old row house, Hill Prince is named after a racehorse and the classy equestrian vibe extends throughout: exposed brickwork, original pine flooring, brown leather sofas, gold-framed mirrors and a lick of hunter-green paint. There’s even a restored carriage house and a verdant courtyard to spill into on balmy nights. Head to the long main bar, dangling with moon-like pendant lights, where classic cocktails are created.
Staff picks: Try the savoury Mole Old Fashioned on draft, made using rye whiskey, Montenegro Amaro, Xocolatl Mole Bitters and Angostura Bitters. Alternatively, sample the house-made syrups and elixirs included in signature, summery drinks like the Vodka Mule made with peach bitters and spicy ginger beer.
9. The Pembroke
Parisian-style The Pembroke may draw bon vivants for a bite, but its cocktails make it a libation destination. Within the Dupont Circle hotel, this restaurant is airy, leafy and chic with cream-panelled walls, coral Chanel tufted banquettes and picture windows offering views out over a summery terrace. It centres around a classic marble cocktail bar topped with gold lamps, where tinctures are shaken and stirred. Alongside an enormous wine list, cocktails have seasonal twists and locally sourced organic fare includes homemade lobster bucatini and lamb tagine with citrus couscous, to name a few.
Bartender’s choice: “The Hibiscus Margarita is a sophisticated twist on the classic margarita, featuring Casamigos Blanco, Cointreau, freshly squeezed lime juice and organic hibiscus syrup. Hibiscus syrup contributes a unique floral note, creating a well-rounded and robust flavour profile,” says bartender Tashawn Jackson.
