City tours

  • Puerto Princesa Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the most famous and popular attractions in the Philippines. This day tour is the main reason people stop at Puerto Princesa before heading to other parts of Palawan, such as El Nido and Coron. Declared both as a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the new 7 wonders of nature, visiting this awe-inspiring cave system is something you will remember forever. This tour is included in all of our Puerto Princesa packages , as well as other interesting attractions in the area, such as Firefly watching and Honda Bay island hopping.

The Subterranean River national park lies amidst the jungles not far from Sabang beach, to the north of Puerto Princesa. It is an elaborate cave system, full of unique rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. Since the river connects directly to the ocean, a one of a kind phenomenon, an extremely diverse ecosystem thrives inside. Unfortunately, since it’s very dark, you are most likely to only see bats. So, the main attraction is the huge caverns and halls resembling a massive cathedral, making this place one of the largest and most elaborate cave systems accessible to the general public.

How to get to the Underground River

The easiest way to visit the Underground river  is by renting a van and going from Puerto Princesa. It’s 1.5 hours drive to Sabang, and you’ll be picked up from your hotel early in the morning. Since this tour is very popular, it’s better to get there early to avoid long waiting times. Even though booking a private van is possible, we strongly encourage taking this tour as part of a group. It doesn’t only make the experience cheaper, but also much more fun.

Another option is getting to Sabang beach the day before and spending the night there. You can then have a full day of exploring this area, which has a few other attractions as well. Sabang is mostly about nature – there are a few mountain hiking trails and the beach itself is quite nice. Since there are quite a few advantages to staying there instead of the city, this is something you can consider. Read our reviews of Daluyon and Sheridan , the two best resorts in Sabang, and it will give you a better idea if this a place you’d like to stay at.

Lastly, you can even visit this place directly from El Nido by renting a private van. This isn’t ideal as the van ride takes 5 hours, meaning you’ll have to leave El Nido around 4AM. Still, if you have an evening flight from Puerto Princesa, it’s certainly possible to spend half a day in the underground river before the van drops you off at the airport. Taking the opposite route however, is highly popular, as many tourists choose to continue directly to El Nido after completing their day tour. This means you’ll arrive  El Nido around 8PM, and wouldn’t need to spend an extra night in Puerto Princesa.

What to do?

The underground river tour itself is highly regulated and fairly schematic – there isn’t a lot of room for customization and special requests. You can scroll a bit further down to see the sample itinerary for the half day tour. Whether you choose to join a group or take a private tour, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and escorted by a local guide the whole time.

As for what you should bring with you, our advice is to pack light. Most chances are you won’t get wet, so there’s no need to wear a swimming suit, but bringing a towel is always a good idea. Wear comfortable shoes instead of flipflops, and bring sunscreen and water. While waiting at Sabang for the boat ride to the underground river, you’ll have plenty of shops around you – so you can easily find a place to buy water and snacks if you need to.

The national park is a protected ecological site, so please treat it with it respect. Avoid littering and do not touch anything, especially once inside the cave. Introducing bacteria and substances from the outside can severely damage the delicate ecosystem inside. While waiting in the jungle for the kayak to the cave, you’ll likely see macaque monkeys – do not provoke them and try to keep a safe distance as they can get aggressive when feeling threatened. In general, please make sure to always follow the safety instructions and keep constant attention to your guide throughout this trip.

How does this tour package fit into your vacation plan?

Most people who visit Palawan prefer to spend as much time as possible at El Nido and Coron . These 2 locations are simply much more beautiful and special than Puerto Princesa. That said, Puerto Princesa still has its own special charm and of course the underground river is something you would not want to miss. Moreover, flights to Puerto Princesa are cheaper and much easier to find.

For those reasons, we believe the ideal plan for anyone visiting Palawan is to fly to Puerto Princesa and spend a single night there. Then, take the day tour to the underground caves in the morning, before continuing to El Nido directly from there. This is especially recommended for larger groups and families, since renting the private van would become cheaper.

If you prefer to stay an extra night or 2 in Puerto Princesa, that’s of course fine as well. There are plenty of fun attractions and tours both in the city area and near Sabang beach as well. These parts of Palawan are great, especially for families with small children, and you can easily spend a couple of days touring this place. In any case, the underground river is the pinnacle of our Puerto Princesa tour packages, which can all be booked as a standalone service or as part of a larger Palawan tour package .

Puerto Princesa Underground River History

In 2010, exploring environmentalists and geologists discovered that the underground river had a second floor. Hence there are small waterfalls actually inside the cave.

Along with this discovery, they also found a cave dome, rock formations and a deep water hole in the river. As well as some large bats and marine creatures.

Consequently, in 2011, the underground river was named as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Making it the pride of not only Puerto Princesa but also the Philippines.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1999.

Hey, we aren't actually a booking site. We are just a travel blog writing about our experiences. However you can book a trusted tour here: Puerto Princesa Underground River Day Tour

Monday 20th of January 2020

SO I am a bit confused, i have been reading a few reviews/tips and I don't quite understand, so if I do a tour guide or book a trip under a tour guide, like idk, say online from tripadvisor's link..it includes the UNesco fee correct, but if i book something under a private tour thru someone local (in Boracay we had locals walk towards us if we wanted to book thru them for xxx activies) thru them we have to get a separate UNESCO slip (fee)? I will be having my family of 7 with me which includes children as young as 6 with. I would like to try to get the best lowest cost but i want to be able to do the tour as i also read that the gov'mt has limited amount of tours per day.

Hey Anna, what you've said is correct. If you book through a trusted tour operator then most include all fees. However some of the local tours will simply charge you for a boat and leave you to pay the fees as you arrive.

We recommend double checking with whoever you book with beforehand, and if you're looking for a trusted tour operator we can recommend this one: Puerto Princesa Underground River Day Tour

After that, you need to head straight to Sabang Port and go to the Tourism Office. There, you'll present your permit and pay the environmental and boat fees, as well as the mandatory audio guide. A boat will be designated for you and will take you to the Underground River entrance.

You'll then board a smaller boat that will bring you inside the Underground River. Your tour guide or boatman will use a searchlight to show you the cave's stunning stalagmites and stalactites, rock formations, and its inhabitants (i.e., bats, birds, and reptiles).

If you're heading to this phenomenal journey in Palawan, take note if these essential travel tips to make the most out of your trip and have a hassle-free adventure:

1. Wear light and comfortable clothes that are okay to get wet and will allow you to move around without trouble. Prepare a change of clothes as well.

2. Wear aqua shoes, trekking sandals, or rubber slippers.

3. Bring a dry bag to secure your valuables.

4. Apply sunblock and mosquito repellant before the tour.

5. Always wear the provided life vests and hard hats for your safety.

6. Avoid bringing disposable water bottles or plastic bags. Use refillable bottles instead.

7. When inside the cave, keep your mouth closed when looking up. You don't want to get any surprise "gifts" in exchange for your bewilderment from above—where the bats are.

8.  It's prohibited to talk loudly inside the cave chambers to avoid disturbing the bats.

Travelers' boat going into the Underground River in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

While joining a tour in Underground River is a  unique experience in itself, there are a lot more must-visit spots to see and activities and tours to try when in Sabang. Here are some of the incredible attractions you shouldn't miss:

There are many tourist spots in Palawan, but what makes Sabang's X-Zipline a worthy stopover is its breathtaking view of the mountains and the open sea. Going to the zipline is an adventure in itself since it's a half-hour trek from the mangroves up the tiny mountain where the zipline starts.

The zipline stands 150 feet above sea level and 800 meters long, so expect to get whizzed through the air as you admire the vista of the river park and the sea.

Sabang Beach in Puerto Princesa, Palawan

Care for some sun, sand, and a drink in hand? There are a lot of beautiful beaches in the Philippines , particularly in Puerto Princesa . The best part is they’re within reach by land travel from the Underground River.

The eye-catching Sabang Beach is sandwiched between towering mountain ranges and the blue waters. It's known to be a picnic spot for Underground River tourists. You can spend your break time (or more) here, getting a tan with the sound of the waves as your background music.

  • Book a Puerto Princesa to San Vicente Palawan tour package

On the other hand, Nagtabon Beach serves as a good spot for tourists who prefers a more peaceful and relaxing escape. The coast is lined up with palm trees and dons a long stretch of white sand.

One of the best adventure tours in the Philippines that goes well with the underground river tour is Ugong Rock. The term "ugong" refers to the loud sound that echoes when you hit or pound on the walls. This natural attraction stands at 75 feet high.

More than the limestone formation, Ugong Rock Adventures offer a few fun and adrenaline-pumping activities, such as ziplining (71-meter drop), trekking, rock climbing, zip biking, and base jumping.

Extreme adventurers can also try spelunking, which is perfect for those who want a closer look at the formation. This is definitely not for the claustrophobic since you'll be squeezing through narrow caverns, openings, and slip through holes. These adventurous activities also highlight the 360-view of the scenery.

After your underground river tour, you can opt to go back to Sabang by foot over the 5-kilometer trail, otherwise known as the Monkey Trail or Jungle Trail. The off-the-beaten-path has a steep climb that goes through overgrown forest and karst limestones. The limestone cliffs are definitely the highlight of this trek.

As you go through the trail, you will spot wild long-tailed macaques, an Asian monkey. Hence, the name. If you're lucky, you can also spot endemic species of monitor lizards.

UPDATED Guide to Puerto Princesa Underground River, Palawan

The Puerto Princesa Underground River  is one of the things you shouldn’t miss when you’re in Palawan . It is part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of Nature .

It’s one of the longest underground rivers in the world. That in itself is an amazing feature. The underground river flows directly under the St. Paul Mountain Range. The cave system inside stretches for 24 km and the river itself goes for 8.2 km.

Regular tours cover the first 1.5 km of the underground river — from here, regular-sized boats can’t pass thru the narrow passageways. It’s possible to tour the entire length of underground river by securing a special permit. Inside, you’ll be able to paddle your way across the river and appreciate the natural rock formations and wildlife.

My Experience at PPS Underground River Tour

How to get to puerto princesa underground river, when is the best time to visit, how to do a diy tour, puerto princesa underground river package tours, things to bring, things to know before you go, where to stay in puerto princesa, what to read next:.

I’d been to Palawan a couple of times but I haven’t had the time to stop at Puerto Princesa City. After my 3-day island hopping trip to Balabac , I decided to stay here for a few more days.

I booked a packaged joiner tour to the Puerto Princesa Underground River via Travelicious Tours Palawan . Yes, it’s possible to do it DIY and you can save a little, but a lot of people will tell you it might not be worth the hassle. Each guest must secure a permit to enter the underground river, and a travel agency does all the paperwork for you.

A service van picked me up at about 7:30 AM in my accommodation. Once all joiner guests are picked up, we were ready to go.

We made a few stops before going to the Puerto Princesa Underground River. Our guide told us these side trips help fill in the waiting time before our schedule slot. Usually, waiting time is 1-2 hours.

First is the Buenavista Viewdeck, which has an overlooking view of Ulugan Bay. There’s also a souvenir shop where you can buy pasalubong such as keychains, bracelets and other local products.

Group shot at Buenavista Viewdeck

Next, we stopped in Sabang for optional activities including zipline and mangrove tour. My friends decided to wait in one of the cottages, while I hopped on a boat for the mangrove tour. It was actually quite nice, since we get to sit quietly in the boat while our guide pointed out the species of mangroves in the area and wildlife including snakes.

Mangrove tour in Sabang

We then head over to a restaurant for a buffet lunch featuring local food. The buffet lunch was good — there was a lot of choices and food is decent. We were all happy with it.

Alas, it was time to head over to Sabang Wharf where we took a motorized boat for 15-20 minutes to arrive at Entrance Beach.

View from Sabang wharf

The Entrance Beach is beautiful, by the way. There are gigantic karsts similar to that in El Nido and the beach is a beautiful green. There’s a huge signage where tourists normally go for a mandatory photo.

Kat in Puerto Princesa Underground River signage

Up ahead there’s a forest where you can see monkeys and komodo dragons. (I was surprised to know there are komodo dragons here; I thought they could only be found in Indonesia!) Then there’s the jump-off point to the underground river tour.

It was time for us to get on one of the paddle boats! We were given a life vest and safety cap each (mandatory), as well as an audio guide with earphones that we can listen through during the tour. I like the soothing voices of the narrators. I think the only way it can be improved if is they get Benedict Cumberbatch.

Jump-off to Puerto Princesa Underground River

It was dark inside the cave. Our guide/boat paddler would point his flashlight in specific stalactites and stalagmites and give additional info as well, aside from that we’re listening to. They are creative in likening the formations to common objects such as vegetables. There are also formations similar to the Last Supper and what appears to be the face of Jesus Christ.

We passed by wide passageways and huge rooms including one called The Cathedral.

It was challenging to take photos inside because it’s dark and we were continuously moving.

Paddle boat tour to Puerto Princesa Underground River

The tour was a humbling experience. There we were, in one of the grandest natural attractions in the world — peaceful and undisturbed. The soothing voiceover, occasional bat noises and sounds of dripping water from the cave’s ceiling all contributed to giving an amazing experience.

Here are the directions to Puerto Princesa Underground River.

  • Take a flight to Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
  • From Puerto Princesa, ride a trike or jeep to San Jose Terminal. From there, take a bus to Sabang (P125, 2 hours). Walk to Sabang Port where the registration is.

If you avail of a packaged tour, round-trip service from your hotel to the underground river is taken cared of.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is open all-year round. However, it’s best to visit during high season when sea condition is calmer. During bad weather, the underground river may be closed — although this is not a common occurrence.

Low season runs from July to October, and high season is from November to June.

Should you go on a packaged tour or DIY tour?

A DIY tour saves you a little money, but you have to do everything yourself including securing a permit to the underground river day(s) before your visit. I recommend getting a packaged tour to the Puerto Princesa Underground River instead as it’s the easier choice. Most people go this way as well.

Here are the instructions to a DIY tour to the Puerto Princesa Underground River.

First, you need to secure a permit to the underground office in the tourist office in City Coliseum, Puerto Princesa City. Do this at least a day before your intended visit.

On the day of your visit, make your way to Sabang Port. Show your permit and pay the environmental fee. The environmental fee is good for 5 days and can be used for both Puerto Princesa Underground River and Honda Bay. Your permit will be stamped once paid. Show this to the people organizing the motorized boats to the Entrance Beach. A boat takes 6 passengers so you may need to wait for others, but since there are a lot of tourists going to the underground river, you shouldn’t wait long. The boat ride takes 15-20 minutes.

From the Entrance Beach, walk for about 100 meters to the jump-off point to the underground river. There you’ll be put on a paddle boat along with the same passengers you were with in the boat from Sabang.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park encompasses one of the world’s most impressive cave systems, featuring spectacular limestone karst landscapes, pristine natural beauty, and intact old-growth forests and distinctive wildlife. It is located in the south-western part of the Philippine Archipelago on the mid western coast of Palawan, approximately 76 km northwest of Puerto Princesa and 360 km southwest of Manila.

The property, comprising an area of approximately 22,202 ha, contains an 8.2km long underground river. The highlight of this subterranean river system is that it flows directly into the sea, with its brackish lower half subjected to tidal influence, distinguishing it as a significant natural global phenomenon. The river’s cavern presents remarkable, eye catching rock formations. The property contains a full mountain-to-sea ecosystem which provides significant habitat for biodiversity conservation and protects the most intact and noteworthy forests within the Palawan biogeographic province. Holding the distinction of being the first national park devolved and successfully managed by a local government unit, the park’s effective management system is a symbol of commitment by the Filipino people to the protection and conservation of their natural heritage.

Criterion (vii): The Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park features a spectacular limestone or karst landscape. It contains an underground river that flows directly to the sea. The lower half of the river is brackish and subject to ocean tide. The associated tidal influence on the river makes this a significant natural phenomenon. The river’s cavern exhibits dramatic speleothems and several large chambers of as much as 120m wide and 60m high. Its accessibility and navigability up to 4.5km inland allows it to be experienced by the general public, who can view the magnificent rock formations on a river cruise unequalled by any other similar experience elsewhere in the world.

Criterion (x): The property contains globally significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. It includes a full mountain-to-sea ecosystem, protecting the most significant forest area within the Palawan Biogeographic Province. There are eight intact forest formations: forest on ultramafic soil, forest on limestone soil, montane forest, freshwater swamp forest, lowland evergreen tropical rainforest, riverine forest, beach forest, and mangrove forest, included in the property. It contains outstanding biodiversity with the Palawan Moist Forest recognized by the WWF’s Global Report as containing the richest tree flora, with high levels of regional and local endemism and as being the largest and most valuable limestone forest in Asia.

The property, including the karst mountain landscapes and the underground river, is in excellent condition. Integrity of the property is also expressed in the complete "mountain-to-the-sea" ecosystem that protects one of the most significant forests in Asia. The uniqueness of the mangrove forests in the Bay along with the flora and fauna they harbour, and the bioecological connection with the caves and surrounding forest is protected within the core area of the property ensuring the local key inter-related and inter-dependant elements of their natural relationships are protected.

The Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park, comprising 22,202 ha and covering three barangays, encompasses the natural values of the property and is of adequate size to protect all the various landforms and the estuarine ecosystem that conveys the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. The boundaries of the property cover the entire watershed of the underground river, thus protecting water quality and quantity and ensuring the long-term viability of the outstanding natural values contained within the property. The biodiversity values of the property are highlighted in Barangay Marufinas which is included in the property along with the adjacent barangays which also contain significant biodiversity values and habitats important to their integrity. Management guidelines are needed to address threats to the property including pollutants impacting on water quality in the underground river. Threats to the property are mainly from adverse activities in adjacent catchment areas, primarily forest clearing and agricultural activities. Tourism activities require careful planning and management to ensure the natural values are not impacted.

Protection and management requirements

Effective site protection is provided at a local rather than a national level through agreements that place legal ownership with the City Government of Puerto Princesa. This arrangement for local ownership ensures the property’s national values are maintained even after changes in local management perspectives. The property is also covered by the National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act of 1992 which ensures legal protection and conservation of protected areas in the Philippines. It decrees that all management decisions for the property are made in consultation with the Protected Areas Management Board (PAMB). Multilateral agreement provisions between national government agencies and local stakeholders have been considered throughout the planning and management of the site to ensure protection and conservation of its natural values.

Management of the park is conducted within the boundary as two zones: a core comprising the Park and a surrounding buffer. The Management Plan for the park sets out relevant objectives and programs and provides zoning within the park’s boundaries wherein different management regimes apply. Management of the property is very effective, reflecting strong local political support and enabling the provision of reasonable funding and staffing. Its key directive is to conserve the underground river and the forest ecosystem in their most natural state possible.

Management of the buffer is covered by guidelines that seek to regulate activities that may impact on the property. They also provide for the establishment of sustainable protective measures for agricultural lands within the buffer. Thus, not only conserving the natural resources of the area, but also improving the quality of life of its residents. However, more resources are required for the full implementation of the management plan and guidelines.

Tourism, identified as a potential threat, adversely impacting the natural values of the property, is being addressed through tourism management objectives set out in the Management Plan. But as tourist visits are increasing, more staff training in park planning and management is required to ensure effective management of tourism activities. The property’s tourism program aims to enhance visitor’s experience with nature while protecting the natural values. The threats posed by uncontrolled access from outside developments are being addressed through the implementation of a limit of 600 visitors per day. Wildlife population surveys are conducted annually to monitor the effects of tourism on wildlife.

Threats from activities such as forest clearing and agriculture also need to be addressed in the Management Plan. Water quality in the underground river, invariably affected by upstream activities in the catchment area, as well as concerns about pollution inputs to the river, need to be addressed in the management guidelines. Regular awareness campaigns at the level of the barangays are needed to ensure natural values of the property are conserved within their jurisdictions and the establishment of an integrated land use plan is required to ensure long term conservation of the natural values of the property.

Puerto Princesa Underground River

A DIY Tour of the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Palawan

A couple of weeks have already passed since I went on a Tao Expedition in Palawan, but I’m still hung up on the experience.

Palawan is beautiful, no one can argue with that.

In fact, in the latest survey of their readers, the Conde Nast Traveler has again included Palawan in the top 5 most beautiful islands in the world, where it once hogged the first place three years running.

While writing about my experience with Tao Expedition, though, I was distracted by a question from a couple of readers: is it possible to go on a DIY (do it yourself) tour of the Puerto Princesa Underground River , or is one really required to buy a travel package? How do you go about it?

Welcome to the Puerto Princesa Underground River!

The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) is a UNESCO world heritage site and recently named as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. This 8.2-km subterranean river runs under a protected cave that features spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

With these and its limestone landscape, it is considered as one of the world’s most complex cave systems.

Just like any popular tourist attraction, it can be expensive to go to the Underground River. A whole day’s tour will set you back P1,800 each, a little steep for an experience that takes less than an hour.

You can take a tour of the mangroves in Palawan.

That’s why I said that a DIY tour of the Underground River is a good idea. It would be cheaper by half, one, and two, going on a DIY tour means you get to do other things in Sabang aside from just going to the Underground River.

Among others, for example, you can take the paddleboat mangrove forest tour , appreciate the Elephant Karst Mountain Cave and Ugong Rock Caves, and maybe even have a photo shoot on Sabang Beach.

The registration area of the paddle boat tour.

You can also hike the Jungle Trail (we took the Monkey Trail), and although it takes hours longer than the usual boat ride from Sabang Port to the Underground River, it’s much more exciting and fulfilling, especially for those who love hiking.

Now, on to the details.

What to Expect at the Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is located in Sabang, a town approximately 80 kilometers from the city proper. This means that from the Puerto Princesa Airport, you need to go to the San Jose Terminal and ride either a jeepney or van to Sabang, which is 2 to 3 hours away.

However, you can’t go directly to Sabang. You need to secure a permit in the city first. Upon your arrival, immediately go to the Underground River Booking Office located at the City Coliseum, present a valid ID, pay the fee, and get your permit.

You’d have to pay for the audio guide separately.

You will then need to go to Sabang port (more on how to get there, below), and when you get there, head to the Tourism Office, present your permit, and then pay the environmental and boat fees. (At the cave entrance, you’ll also need to pay for the audio device/guide.)

You will then be assigned a boat that will take you to the PPUR entrance in 20 to 30 minutes.

One of the stalactites inside the Underground River.

From the entrance, you fall in line to take a smaller boat that will take you inside the Underground River. (This line can get really long during the summer months, March to May). Using a search light, your tour guide/boatman will show you the cave’s rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites, as well as its inhabitants.

The tour lasts around 45 minutes. A bigger boat will then take you back to Sabang port where you can either head back to the city or spend the night in town.

How to Get to Sabang, Palawan

There are many ways to get to Sabang from the city of Puerto Princesa.

Jeepney or Ordinary (Non-air-conditioned) Bus

From your hotel in the city, go to the San Jose Terminal. It is located in the San Jose New Market, which is less than five minutes away from Robinson’s Mall. A tricycle ride, which costs P80, is convenient when you’re traveling with a group. Another option is to ride a multicab, which costs P12 per person.

From the Terminal, you’ll find jeepneys and ordinary buses that leave for Sabang Port at 7am, 9am, 12nn, and 2pm. Travel time ranges from two hours and 15 minutes to three hours, which includes several stops along the way.

Also note that, despite their scheduled departure time, jeep and buses don’t leave until all their seats are filled. Advanced booking is not available, but if you’re traveling on a budget, this is the cheapest option. The fare is P100 for Palawan locals, P120 for local tourists, and P200 for foreigners.

Sabang Port, Palawan

If you highly value your personal space, you may not appreciate the crowded conditions of these vehicles. The dispatchers will try to squeeze in as many people as they can inside the car.

Even if the jeep can only accommodate 15 people, they’ll be getting up to 20 people. And more often than not, bins of fresh fish and seafood will be joining you on your trip. There’s a good chance that you’ll end up smelling like fish or shrimp by the time the trip is over.

Shuttle Van

There are also a lot of shuttle van services from Puerto Princesa to Sabang. If you opt for this, you can get to Sabang within two hours or just an hour and 45 minutes.

Tickets are priced at P150 for Filipinos and P200 for foreigners. These sell out fast, so the best way to secure a ride is to book a roundtrip reservation by contacting any of these numbers: +63 912-100-2651 or +63 917-585-9602.

You can also get in touch with Lexus Shuttle services by visiting their Facebook page. Shuttle vans have three trips to Sabang in the morning, and three trips in the afternoon, starting from 7:30am and up to 5pm.

A caveat: the van drivers love going really fast. If you suffer from motion sickness, it would be a good idea to take Bonamine before the trip and bring a plastic bag, just in case.

A taxi is the most comfortable of all available modes of transport to Sabang. It also allows you to travel at your own pace, which means you can stop at roadside stalls selling seasonal produce or at scenic spots where you can take selfies or photos of the stunning landscape.

The only drawback: taxi rides are quite expensive, with the one-way fare from Puerto Princesa reaching P1,500.

Tips in Planning Your Underground River Tour

When is the best time to visit the Underground River? When choosing a travel date, one of the most important factors to consider is the weather. Puerto Princesa’s dry season is from January to April while the wet season is from May to December.

Scheduling your trip during the dry season is recommended, as the waves tend to be calmer andthere are less chances that your trip would be canceled due to inclement weather.

Going into the Puerto Princesa Underground River

What are the things to bring during the tour? Be prepared to get wet during the tour since you will be getting in and out of the boat. Opt for light, comfortable clothes and, if possible, wear flip-flops, trekking sandals, or any waterproof footwear.

Also bring waterproof cases (for your gadgets), mosquito repellent, drinking water, and sunblock. Ditch the plastic bags, as monkeys like grabbing these from guests.

Where to stay in Puerto Princesa? While you can stay overnight in Sabang, I would still recommend that you just go there and spend the night (or more) in Puerto Princesa. There are lots of hotels, inns, and pension houses in there that can make your budget planning easier. Click: Where to stay in Puerto Princesa .

There you go, a guide to doing the Underground River Tour in Palawan all on your own.  I hope it will help you in planning part of your Palawan trip! Safe travels!

Note: If you don’t want the hassle of a DIY trip to the underground river, you can book your tour online and have everything taken care of for you: Puerto Princesa Underground River Day Tour .

Have you been to the Underground River? How was your trip?

OMG! I have been to Palawan at least 5 times and just falls in love with the place even more each time.

' src=

Thanks for the tips, we are looking for a place to stay ion puerto princesa.

' src=

My family and I, a group of 7 including children (4) are planning to travel in April 2020, because we are a group with kids, booking a tour thru online sites are pretty costly roughly 40-50USD. if we do this DIY tour, and find our way to Sabang from hotel via jeepneys/shuttle, after paying/obtaining the permit (cost?) and the environmental fee entrance 120-150php. what is the cost or how do we get a tour boat? what did you do for food/lunch wise? are there little shops/restos or local vendors once we arrive at sabang awaiting boat entrance? because if we do the tour guide via online booking it includes lunch buffet, which i don’t care for but i do have to feed the childrens and the adults with me, i am sure we will be starving after 2 plus hours . and i would love to eat local food.

' src=

The tour itself is pretty much straightforward once you re at Sabang, you will take the boat at the port which will bring you to the cave entrance. The Underground River tour takes around 2 hours in total including the boat ride to and fro from the cave entrance.

' src=

We are 4 pax and will be in Palawan on April 22-26. I think DIY tour will be more cheaper and comfortable. What are your recommendations.

' src=

Thank you so much for your helpful article Aleah … I actually tried to contact a number you indicated and I just got a booking for shuttle services and for a cheaper cost compared to tour packages … Thank you so much.

' src=

Hi how much does the shuttle van costs? Thank you

' src=

Ching, you can book via Klook. They have private and shared vans. https://www.klook.com/en-PH/activity/12352-private-puerto-princesa-international-airport-transfers-palawan/?aid=4074

' src=

Thanks Aleah for this post. We have a planned tour in Puerto Princessa and El Nido this April with my wife and my two kids. Our flight from Manila will arrive in Puerto Pincessa airport at around 8:20am based on the flight schedule. We planned to proceed emmediately to underground rive tour after a breakfast and early check-in in a hotel in the City as we will be consuming the next 2-3 days in El Nido. May I ask you, if we can still manage to have the underground river tour despite our very short stay in Puerto Pincessa. I noticed that most underground river tour shedule are early morning travel from the city to Sabang port. I think, we can’t take with the DIY tour considering my two kids will be with us. Do you think can we still able to catch up with the underground river tour without compromising our itinerary as we have already booked a flight and hotel in El Nido?

' src=

hi marcelo.. we also have a booking to Palawan this coming April 6 to 9.. we will go to Underground river and have an island hopping to el nido.

I will update next week after our travel.

' src=

Thanks to this post. I will definitely try this DIY underground river trip on Dec 5. I will post my experience here after that.

' src=

Hi we are planning to go to el nido right ayaw after the tour in Sabang. is there any last minute cut off time for the vans in the terminals traveling to el nido ?

' src=

As far as I know, last trip of the van is 7pm and it costs around P800. Bus is cheaper at around P600 (including trike to terminal from airport) but takes waaaay longer.

I highly suggest booking a transfer from Puerto Princesa to El Nido via Klook. It’s only P500, you can book it online (hence reserve your seat), and last trip is at 8:30pm. Here’s the link

' src=

hi..when is your trip?.. We are planning to do the same but coming from PPS..

' src=

so it means that its possible to do the underground river tour only? is it poasible to do anytime? bcos we will arrived at Puerto Princesa at 11am and we’re planning to do it at 1pm bcos we will leave the next day going to El Nido.

' src=

Hi Aleah. Thanks for all your information. I have limited time in PP arriving at 9:30 am from Manila. Do you know the latest available times for the cave entry as was hoping to do it on my own as arriving to late to catch a tour and leaving to early on a return flight to do the tour and make the flight. Appreciate your help. Thanks John

' src=

Thanks for posting this info; very helpful! 🙂

' src=

this is very useful information. Meron lang akong tanong— Meron mang lugar doon na pwede mapag iwanan ng mga gamit (backpack, etc..) and pag meron.. Magkano???

' src=

Hi I want to know if theres a tour that will start in afternoon? Or is there a chance for us to do UGR tour if we will arrive in PPS at 12:30nn

' src=

Tanong lang po…i will be travelling alone this september. I had a 1 week vacation so rather than staying at home eh puntahan ko na lang ang palawan. Panu po kapag solo traveller, do I have to rent the whole boat? Or pwede ako makijoin sa ibang group para mas makamura.

' src=

when are you travelling? I’ll be there from 16 to 19.

' src=

Great info! We plan to visit the underground river. We will be in Palawan for 2 nights only and I wanted to see the river and El Nido. We are arriving at 9:45 am so tours would have left by then. You have given me a great idea to rent a car and do the river by ourselves in the afternoon. We might spend the night in Sabang or drive to El Nido right after the river tour. What do you think? How long is the drive from Sabang to El Nido? We plan to stay in Corong-corong.

1800 all in or just entrance and boats to underground? Fare going to sabang is not included in 1800? Pls clarify ty

Hi, so technically if you do a DIY tour, you don’t have to spend 8hrs in Sabang if the Underground river tour only takes 45minsutes, right?

Correct, but it also depends on when you’re going there. During the summer months (April-May), it will take longer as there will be more people. Plus if you’re relying on public transport, you may have to wait a while before you can get a ride. Best to DIY if you have your own car.

' src=

Interesting! When we went to Palawan (so many years ago, if I may add), the shuttle vans where on a per rent basis. It was so expensive, but the parents found another family that was willing to split the cost between us. The van toured us all over Sabang. It was so comfy (and also practical hehe)! 🙂

Yes, it really is best if you have your own car. Saves you a lot of time (and money)!

' src=

How much did the DIY tour cost? 🙂

' src=

Really great information and such a beautiful adventure. Hoping we can visit this paradise one day.

Plan for it! Palawan is worth it. 🙂

I love this! So useful, going to bookmark it for my next trip – 2018 pa January sigh. Can’t wait ??

Subterranean River,

Underground river tour.

T he Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a  protected area  of the  Philippines.  located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of the city centre of  Puerto Princesa ,  Palawan .

The river is also called 'Puerto Princesa Underground River'. The national park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the western coast of the island.

It was discovered that the underground river has a second floor, which means that there are small waterfalls inside the cave. They also found a cave dome measuring 300 m (980 ft) above the underground river, rock formations, large  bats , a deep water hole in the river, more river channels, and another deep cave, as well as marine creatures and more.

Deeper areas of the underground river are almost impossible to explore due to oxygen deprivation.

On November 2011, Puerto Princesa Underground River was provisionally chosen as one of the  New7Wonders of Nature . This selection was officially confirmed on January 28, 2012.

Giving you, the 7th Wonder of Nature, Palawan, Underground River.

Exploring the wonders of Puerto Princesa

The beautiful city of Puerto Princesa continues to impress not only as a premier tourist destination but also as the thriving, highly urbanized capital of Palawan province.

With its pristine beauty and rich natural resources, travelers seeking unparalleled experiences and promising adventures are attracted to the Philippines’ largest city. World-renowned destinations such as the iconic Underground River, a Unesco World Heritage site, can be found here, among other equally famous attractions.

photo2 2

At the same time, Puerto Princesa attracts investors and companies wanting to expand to this city. Its improving infrastructure, peace and order situation, and ease of doing business are helping boost the influx of investors here.

Intensive efforts by the local and provincial governments are now turning Puerto Princesa into a true model city in terms of security, cleanliness and nature preservation.

While much has been done, there seems to be no stopping the LGU as its programs are now focused on ensuring that government services will be more accessible, and that economic progress will be sustained in the city and the whole province.

photo3 1

Indeed, many are finding even more reasons to visit Puerto Princesa City—a model city, a conducive hub for businesses, a tourist destination in itself, and the perfect jump off point to a host of adventures in Palawan. Tourists can also explore the pristine beaches, historical sites, food joints and rainforests in this tropical paradise.

If you’re planning to visit this city any time soon, consider these gems as you explore the wonders of Palawan.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park

Considered the longest navigable underground river in the world, it flows directly underneath St. Paul Mountain Range, passing through caves and rock formations.

Island hop and explore beautiful islands including Starfish Island, Snake Island and Pandan Island. You can snorkel or just laze around the beach and be one with nature.

Crocodile Farm and Nature Park

Known as the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, this DENR-managed park is home to endangered species of crocodile, including the saltwater crocodile and the endemic Philippine freshwater crocodile.

Explore more of the city by going to Baker’s Hill, where you can get some delish pasalubong like hopia and crinkles; Butterfly Garden; Palawan Museum; and Ihawig Firefly Watching. And if you’re lucky, you might just see and take photos of the local cherry trees, known as “balayong” which are likened to Japan’s cherry blossoms.

Your home in paradise

To better experience the grandeur of Puerto Princesa, trusted property developer Sta. Lucia Land Inc. offers premier residential and hospitality options that could serve as your home in this beautiful paradise.

While Sta. Lucia Land continues to do its share in fueling the fringe areas in this city, it also builds developments that can readily cater to the growing tourism sector in the city.

SotoGrande Puerto Princesa and Crown Hotel Palawan at Harbour Springs both present exceptional options to travelers and staycationers wanting to experience the beauty of Palawan. Vacationers will have the luxury of indulging in a more relaxed and laidback lifestyle as SotoGrande Puerto Princesa and Crown Hotel Palawan are equipped with facilities and amenities that can make your stay here truly worthwhile.
