All UAE residents can apply for eVisas for travel to Japan

UAE residents planning to travel to Japan no longer need to visit the Japanese embassy to apply for a visa. The Asian destination has introduced eVisas for UAE residents, as well as for Saudi residents and nationals.

Effective immediately, Japan has eased visa regulations for travellers from the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Tourists keen on exploring Tokyo’s neon streets, Kyoto 's temples and shrines, or the snow-covered slopes of Hokkaido can apply online for a short-term tourist visa that allows stays of up to 90 days.

No screenshots or print outs of the visa are required. Instead, travellers will access Japan's eVisa website on arrival in the country to show approved documents to immigration authorities.

The easing of travel rules for visitors from the Gulf region follows visa-free regulations for Emirati travellers that have been in place since November.

Citizens from 68 other nationalities, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and several countries across Europe, are also exempt from applying for a visa to travel to Japan.

“I am delighted with the commencement of the online applications for short-term stay visas in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as well as the visa waiver arrangements for short — term stay for Qatari nationals, as it will ease the process to visit Japan for touristic purposes,” said Kobayashi Daisuke, executive director of Japan National Tourism Organisation in Dubai.

Earlier this month, Emirates resumed flights to Tokyo-Haneda airport, the Dubai airline's third destination in the country. The service joins Emirates' daily A380 flights to Tokyo-Narita and daily Boeing 777 fights to Osaka. at Japanese embassies or Consulate-Generals and can then travel visa free to Japan for short -term visits over a period of three years.

Qatari nationals are also able to travel easier to Japan as authorities have added a visa waiver registration for travellers from the Gulf country. Before travelling, Qatari nationals should register their passport details at Japanese embassies or Consulate-Generals and can then travel visa free to Japan for short term visits over a period of three years.

Japan drops lingering Covid-19 restrictions more than three years after the pandemic

Japan is also set to drop its last remaining Covid-19 regulations for travellers.

From May 8, visitors from overseas will no longer need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test when arriving in the country.

Japan introduced some of the toughest travel restrictions after the Covid-19 pandemic as the country effectively sealed off its borders to non-residents. Since the lifting of restrictions, airlines around the world have added more flights to Japan to satisfy traveller demand.

Due to the delay of my first flight, my connecting flight with JetBlue was canceled by Singapore Airlines, but the JetBlue crew was very accommodating and rebooked a seat for me. The crew was very nice and had good attitude.

I am going to be just factual, not bad mouthing nor complaining, but this was my experience. With 3 pieces of luggage, I was told the flight from Mumbai to Dubai was cancelled due to flood. This was told not by the airport board which still showed the regular time of departure, but general stuff at the airport. No Emirates stuff around to direct the transfer passengers of the cancelled flights. By the departure counters with crowds of people, one by one, angry, frustrated, urgent conversations were going on. No announcement were made, no postings being seen, just private conversations. I still have 5+ hours of layover, so I let more urgent people settled first. However, the fact that no communication of when, what and where I should go was very unsettling. Basically no time limit waiting means, no meal, no sleep, no step away, no planning, no change plan, no telling of the family what to do. Nobody was able to tell you anything but asked you to wait, no chair, no space, no facility to freshen up. That went on for 10+ (from 5) hour without warnings and accurate communications. Email received from Emirates asked me not to go to Dubai at all, or boarding at the time that was passed. In other words, communication were very untimely, after the fact. That created more confusion instead. After changing several of boarding time, we were given the gate # and a boarding pass. However, the boarding pass still have the original time of boarding, so again, not knowing walking 30 min in the airport to the gate would make you late or not, therefore, still dare not to eat a meal. The flight arriving to Dubai was uneventful and I gave a 4/5 rating. I just thought the layover at Dubai would just cut short from 8+ hours to 2+ hours. At Dubai airport, I saw people sleeping on cardboard, knowing, these people got stranded but they dared to sleep because they know when to board and I didn't. Or these kind of delay are just so normal that people know what to do to pass time. Then the worst service and crazy thing happened. The boarding time on board for LA and at gate A9 was clearly 8:50AM. At 8:40, surprised by not having any boarding activities, then one single staff showed up and said to a few passengers that the boarding would be delayed without a time frame. Since only a few people know, I asked another Emirates staff at another counter, who simply said basically non of his business. I was shocked with that indifferent attitude. Yet every boards I saw show the same boarding time. What kind of system failure was that to prepare delay situation! How confusing and unnecessary chaos and anger that provoke. That poor staff had to repeat himself so many times, answered questions that he had no power nor information to provide nor solved. One an only one stuff to show up for 10 min, leaving the counter non-staff with board showing 8:50AM boarding. This was purely irresponsible from top to bottom of the entire airline operation staff. What kind of leader in a service industry would allow this to happen to their customers. Without explanation, after changing 3 times the boarding times, again, means you should not go to eat a full meal, because, when you found a mob at the gate. People who were stranded for 2 days were afraid of not getting a seat with a full plane. That would not be happening if the airline provide adequate guidance to each person, instead of just having 4 staff yelling at the gate at the same time to "control" the crowd, threatening no boarding and delay boarding. Finally, I was on board, hungry and tired, not sleep for 36 hours. I was denied with a snack of fruit. By the time meal was served, it was an hour later. Half way of the trip, I felt sleep in fetus position and did not want to move, happy I finally could have some shut eyes time. However, when I got up to the bathroom, I felt very light headed. Having sleep deprived, constipated for 3 days, dehydrated, I knew it could happen since my blood pressure usually was low closed to 90/60. Any lower then that, I could have syncope. Sure enough, I was on the floor just 10 feet from my seat and 5 feet to the bathroom. However, nobody called for help. I asked for warm water and juice to hydrate, came only with cold and icy drinks which I wouldn't take. I asked for blankets, one was given. Yet my shivering, needs to cover my head and multiple requests did not hasten to take the two blankets that are at my seat 10 feet away. I waited 10 min for that. While 2-3 staff surrounded me, nobody did the vitals until after 15 min, just the spirometer only of which did not work due to my cold fingers. The first reading was 86 and oxygen was suggested. But another supervising personnel came, fussed over another reading, ignoring my comfort and needs. Seemingly the reading of spirometer was the priority. By then, no oxygen needed. I had this fainting experience before, and I knew how to help myself. However, I was not being listened to but to be told this and that. Finally, I got better and returned to seat. One kind flight attendant said she would check back with me in 15 min. She did not come back. I felt asleep in that fetus position again and this time I woke up with a bad cramp at my left leg. Yet I needed to go to bathroom, the cramp was too bad to walk. So I stepped back to seat. When I tried again the second time, the other front leg got cramp. This time I dare not move but massaged myself. For all these 5-10 min, I called for attention. Attendants passed me by because they were carried with heavy load of blankets and stuff. Nobody answered the light. Then came landing and off board. I was asked by two attendants how I felt. I smiled and said "fine".

The customer service was very poor. I didn’t get any accommodations for my cancelled flight. I was without any sleep for 36 hours.

Flight never took off. Boarded after multiple 30 minutes interval delays for hours.. then after an hour onboard, captain announce cancellation and back on the bus to the terminal with no information and everyone to fend for self.. Emirates did absolutely nothing to communicate either electronically or announcement. It’s unprecedented I know with the flood but lack of communication creates anxiety and extra pain for staff. Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

This is my first and last flight with Qatar because when we go for boarding pass in Delhi airport the team asked for money charging me for hand baggage which is technically including with my ticket so also we get one our temple pics I ask them to checking in but they tell me I have to pay $500 dollars for that additional which is not make sense than I diseased to throw away because I can’t take with us . For carry in beg also I pay some Indian n currency for the guy who help I already pay 6 passengers ticket cost me $8000 so really I’m not happy . Terrible. The website insisted that I wasn't logging in correctly to confirm my flight. It also wouldn't let me register as a member. I encountered challenges with the boarding staff during the boarding pass issuance process, leading to disagreements. Despite my agent's information that carrying a small cabin bag along with a separate bag containing my laptop and purse was permitted, the boarding staff did not allow it.

So far pal express is much better than Cebu pacific in terms of customers service and in flight crew. And on time departure and arrival . Especially if you're taking airbus 320 plane . But the small aircraft like bombardier . It usually delayed .

Biz class is way below what other airlines offer. The food was mediocre at best. A WiFi was intermittent and movies were dated. Honestly the best part of the trip was that the Mabuhay lounge in SFO was closed and they gave us pass to Air France lounge. My advise, fill up there before boarding plane.

The flight itself was good, however, the disorganization of boarding and the sheer amount of baggage STUFFED into the over head compartments in what appear to be an outdated plane was not okay. The plane was outdated. I walked into the restroom and a panel underneath the sink was on the floor. I called the attention of the stewardess and she quickly put it back into place. The entertainment system had to be rebooted in order to “work,” but even after rebooting, the sound was off. For the amount of money my wife and I paid, we expected a little bit more. Sad to say, but Phillippines Airlines missed the mark on many things going all the way to sectioning off such a small area for all the passengers to wait for boarding. Everyone was on top of each other. They also made you throw away your water, even after the initial security check. So the water you bought after the first security check wasn’t allowed onto the plane, but they didn’t offer a refill station or another place to buy water. Will definitely need to think again about booking with Philippine Airlines.

The crew were lovely and also attentive. The food was overcooked and hard to enjoy. Slept well enough .....so the seats are comfortable for sleeping and sitting.

The charges for overweight luggage were not clear, I think I paid twice, I didn’t argue because I was traveling alone & already felt exhausted.

Visa-free travel between UAE and Japan starting November 1

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that UAE citizens who hold ordinary passports can travel to Japan without the need to obtain a prior visa.

Holders of UAE passports can stay in Japan for up to 30 days each visit for the purpose of tourism or work, starting from November 1, 2022, without the need to submit an application at the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi, apply for an exemption, or pay any fees.

The Ministry noted that entry requirements to Japan still apply, including ensuring passport validity of at least six months, providing a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken 72 hours before departure, or presenting a certificate proving that the traveler has taken three doses of vaccinations approved in Japan, which are Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, or Sinopharm.

His Excellency Khalid Abdullah Belhoul, Undersecretary at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, underscored that the decision to exempt UAE nationals from prior entry visas reflects the depth of cooperation between the UAE and Japan as the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. His Excellency noted that the agreement will enhance tourism and cultural exchange and support new opportunities in business, trade, and investment.

The agreement coincides with the launch of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UAE and Japan, signed by His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and His Excellency Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aims to strengthen relations between the two countries to serve common interests by encouraging additional diplomatic, economic, political, trade, and investment cooperation.

The UAE is Japan's tenth largest trading partner in the world and is home to more than 340 Japanese companies operating in various sectors.

Do You Require a Visa to Travel to Japan?

Japan’s Foreign Policy exempts passport holders from 68 countries and regions from requiring a visa to enter Japan. This list includes the United Arab Emirates. Therefore, UAE nationals can travel to Japan without a prior visa for up to 30 days for work or tourism. Travellers can visit family, attend business meetings or conferences and explore the country without a visa. UAE national applicants must have a valid, registered ICAO-compliant ePassport to diplomatic missions of Japan.

However, UAE nationals must apply for the appropriate visa if they want to get employed or conduct commercial activities in Japan.

Besides the UAE passport holders, residents from the following countries don’t require a prior Japan visa to travel.

The Japanese embassy/consulate may also have additional specifications for short-term visit permissions without a visa for some countries listed above. So, it would be ideal to contact the embassy directly or visit the official website and inquire before finalising the trip.

Documents Required to Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa from Dubai

Passport holders of countries not included in the list above must apply for a Japan eVisa from Dubai. Mandatory documents needed for a Japanese visit visa from Dubai include the following.

• Visa application form (filled)
• Valid Emirates ID
• Original passport
• Travel itinerary/schedule of stay
• Hotel booking details
• 2 recent, clear passport-size photographs (with white background)
• Personal bank statement (last three months)
• Employment certificate
• Document to prove legal residency (residence permit, driving licence)

Visit the official website, create an account, fill in the application and submit the required documents. This will include basic personal information, work-related information, travel information and accommodation details. Once you have uploaded all documents, submit the application.

If approved, you will receive your confirmation via email. Next, you must visit the Japan Consulate in Dubai to pay the eVisa fee. After paying the fee in person, you will receive your eVisa. You cannot pay the fee online (via card).

At the departure airport, you will need to log on to the official website and display the visa issuance notice on your mobile or tablet. To do so, visit the official website and head to the “Page for displaying visa issuance notice”.

Note: These are the Japan visa requirements from Dubai for tourists. Residents looking for a short-term business visa or a visit visa to see relatives or friends will need to submit additional documents to support their application, including documents from the host/sponsor/guarantor in Japan.

How much is the Japan Visit Visa Fee in Dubai?

Generally, the Japan visa cost from Dubai for a single entry visa is AED 82 (equivalent to 3,000 Japanese Yen). The price may differ for different nationalities in some cases.

How much time does it take for Japan visa processing in Dubai?

It takes a minimum of four weeks in general for the entire process.

Please note that this is the expected turnaround time, provided there are no issues with the submitted documents. In case of complications, the visa process can take more than a month. This is why travellers must apply well before the planned travel date.

Here are the requirements for a Japan Tourist Visa in UAE. Please note that this must be submitted within 3 months from the issuance date. You may, however, be asked to submit additional documents by the Embassy or Consulate for further examination.

• Visa Application Form – you can fill this electronically

• Original Passport – with more than 2 blank visa pages and a validity of more than 6 months during the time of application
• Passport with Valid UAE Residence Visa (if applicable)
• Copy of Passport and UAE Residence Visa – if ever you are a GCC Member, then you can send a copy of Emirates ID
• 1 Passport Sized Photo – taken within the last 6 months in a white background, this must be glued on the application for
• Flight Booking Confirmation

• Accommodation Confirmation in Japan
• Schedule of Stay or Travel Itinerary

• Certificate of Employment – with applicants position, monthly salary, period of leave, for those applying in Dubai, you must address it to the Consul-General of Japan in Dubai and have company seal and signature of in-charge
• Company Letter – for partner or owner
• Bank Statement – for the last 3 months, Online statement is acceptable, you must have account name, daily transaction, and balance
• Proof of Current Address – e.g., Phone or Landline, Water or Electricity Bills showing your address
• Questionnaire – due to the pandemic

• Visa Fees – (in General) 100 Dirham or visa fee exempt. Check the list here . Filipinos are exempt from paying visa fees.

How to Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa in the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi, UAE

STEP 1 : Gather all documents needed for your Japan Tourist Visa Application.

STEP 2 : Go to the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi, walk-ins are accepted.  Submit your documents to the officer-in-charge and pay the visa fee if you need to.

STEP 3 : Wait for the Embassy to communicate if your visa is ready. It may take a week longer if they ever need additional documents.

STEP 4 : Claim your passport at the Embassy.

How to Apply for a Japan Tourist Visa in the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai, UAE

STEP 2 : A week before your application, send your application form (2 pages) to [email protected] . Wait for further instructions. Unlike the Embassy in Abu Dhabi, you need to have an appointment in Dubai.

STEP 3 : Follow the instructions in the e-mail and submit your documents at the Consulate and pay the fee.

STEP 4 : Wait for the Consulate to communicate if your visa is ready. It may take 4 days, longer if they ever need additional documents.

STEP 5 : Claim your passport with at the Consulate.

Japan’s Dubai office expands to include GCC

J apan’s inbound tourism from emerging markets is on the rise. The Middle East has seen a huge jump in arrival figures, growing 17.2 per cent in 2023, when compared to the pre-pandemic numbers in 2019.Travel consultants will be encouraged to know that Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) is looking to actively support partners that boost Japan bound tourism.

In an exclusive discussion with TTN Middle East, JNTO Executive Director – Dubai Office, Daisuke Kobayashi revealed plans for the Middle East and milestones for the year ahead. “It has been over two years since JNTO opened an office in Dubai, and I am positioning 2024, our third year, as the year of further expansion.

“To expand the scope of tourism promotion, we have so far focused on mainly the UAE, where our office is located, but from now on, we will focus on other GCC countries as well such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar in addition to the UAE.

Japan Airlines has become the first Japanese airline company to launch a direct flight to the Middle East by operating Doha - Haneda flight from this season– Daisuke Kobayashi

“To boost collaboration with local stakeholders, in addition to local airlines that operate direct flights from the Middle East to Japan, Japan Airlines has become the first Japanese airline company to launch a direct flight to Middle East by operating Doha – Haneda flight from this season. We are planning specific joint promotions with them and with the travel agencies that handle inbound travel to Japan.”

A Dubai free zone has concluded a trade roadshow in Japan as the UAE looks to increase non-oil bilateral trade, which was worth nearly $7.5 billion in the first half of 2023.

Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre (DMCC) said its first Made for Trade Live roadshow in Japan focused on web3, gaming and artificial intelligence.

DMCC contributes 11 percent to Dubai’s annual foreign direct investment inflows. It is home to 83 Japanese companies – around 25 percent of Japanese businesses that are set up in the wider UAE.

At the event, DMCC executives briefed Japanese business leaders on the opportunities in expanding to DMCC.

UAE-Japan non-oil trade grew by more than 4 percent year on year in the first six months of 2023. In the same period, the UAE’s non-oil exports to Japan exceeded $718 million while imports from Japan to the UAE totalled $6.3 billion. Re-exports from the UAE to Japan reached $421 million.

Oil trade continues to play an important role in the bilateral relationship. The UAE supplied more than 44 percent – 32.7 million barrels – of Japan’s crude oil needs in March, according to the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in Tokyo.

The agency said Japan imported 74 million barrels during the month, of which nearly 95 percent originated from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.

Total trade between Japan and the UAE for the first 10 months of 2023 exceeded $38 billion, according to figures given at the 10th session of the Abu Dhabi-Japan Economic Council in March.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, executive chairman and CEO, DMCC, said: “We believe there is plenty of untapped potential in the market.”

Last month, a consortium of Japanese companies signed a concession agreement with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company and Tadweer Group for the development of a waste-to-energy project in Abu Dhabi.

Marubeni Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Inova and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport and Urban Development will build the project, which will have an expected annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste. 

Japanese investment into the country exceeded $3.3 billion at the end of 2022, accounting for 3 percent of total foreign direct investment  inflows, and 13 percent of FDI from non-Arab Asian countries. 

The UAE is one of the most important Middle Eastern investors in Japan. Its investment is valued at $1.2 billion, which represents 42 percent of total investment from the Middle East and North Africa.

UAE-Japan trade highlights

• Japan has played a role in the Emirates lunar mission. The Rashid rover was transported to the moon on a lunar lander made by Japanese company ispace. 
• The UAE is home to more than 340 Japanese companies operating in sectors including technology, renewable energy, transportation, healthcare, infrastructure and manufacturing.
• In July 2023 Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida paid an official visit to the UAE, resulting in agreements being signed across sectors including energy, AI, space, healthcare, transport and the circular economy.
• In 2022 Emirates Steel Arkan announced a partnership with Itochu Corporation and JFE Steel Corporation to explore the construction of a ferrous raw material production facility in Abu Dhabi.
• Japanese energy companies such as Itochu, Inpex and Idemitsu have agreed to buy blue ammonia from Adnoc, while the Japan Bank for International Cooperation has signed a $3 billion financing deal with the state oil company to develop hydrogen technology.
