The Kesch Trek offers four days of spectacular hiking in the Graubünden mountains. Stunning mountain scenery with wild valleys, rugged peaks and imposing glacier landscapes.

Description

On this hike in the midst of the Graubünden mountains, you can switch off from everyday life. Experience the tranquil and yet spectacular high Alpine region between Flüela Pass and Albula Pass.

The first stage is gentle, taking only two-and-a-half hours. It leads you past Alp Grialetsch to Grialetschhütte. Hardy souls can take a dip in one of the nearby mountain lakes. The next stages take four to six hours. The trail leads past numerous 3,000m peaks, and, on the third day, you can even see into the Engadin region. Finally, it drops down to the Albula Pass and onwards to Bergün, where four unforgettable days come to an end.

The three SAC huts along the route – the Grialetschhütte, the Kesch-Hütte and the Es-Cha Hütte – have joined forces to offer the multi-day trip as a bookable package. This includes half-board and optional picnic lunches, so you can enjoy the unique countryside on the Kesch Trek with a light rucksack. Off we go!

All around it there are no comparable peaks and so it dominates the panoramic view of the region with its pitch-black wall, which reaches into the sky behind the Kesch Mountain Cabin. Thus, it is unsurprising that this mountain has been ennobled with its very own long-distance hiking tour.

Its highest mountain pass is de Fuorcla da Pischa, which lies at roughly 2'800 meters, however the other crossings are also physically demanding. Luckily, friendly hosts and charming SAC huts await you at the end of each daily trek. The KESCH trek is not a hike for beginners and pretty steep. It definitely does its eponymous mountain peak justice in every aspect.

Arrival in Landquart | Flüela Pass – Chamanna da Grialetsch SAC

Arrival in Landquart and luggage drop-off. Onward journey to Davos and bus ride to the Flüela Pass. From here on you will hike to the SAC hut “Chamanna da Grialetsch”. Its picturesque location offers views of the glaciers the glaciers Vadret Vallorgia, Vadret da Grialetsch and Vadret da Sasura.

Chamanna da Grialetsch SAC – Kesch-Hütte SAC

On this day you will hike over the Scaletta Pass. On your way to the SAC hut “Kesch-Hütte” enjoy a short detour, which takes you to the two Alpine lakes Ravais-ch Sout and Lai da Ravais-ch. They lie in a small valley beneath the mighty Piz Murtelet Sur. In the evening the Kesch-Hütte awaits you with good food, warmth and overall cosiness.

Kesch-Hütte SAC – Chamanna d’Es-cha SAC

From the Kesch-Hütte you will first descend to the Alp digl Chant. Here you can fortify yourself with local delicacies like yoghurt, Alpine cheeses, and milk. Afterwards you continue on the steep ascent up to the Fuorcla Pischa.

After another descent you will reach the SAC hut “Chamanna d’Es-cha”. The parlour with its richly stucco decorated ceiling is unique for a SAC hut. Recharge with a portion of well-earned barley soup or with a homemade Engadinian walnut tart. 

Chamanna d’Es-cha SAC – Bergün

The last day of the Kesch trek will take you from the Chamanna d’Es-cha hut back to the valley. On your way the varying views of green mountain pastures and rugged peaks accompany your descent. A highlight of this leg of the tour is the sparkling lake, Lai da Palpuogna.

Finally, the route takes you through forests and meadows to Bergün. Throughout your journey on this day the Albula Railway track, which is renowned for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, weaves its way across your path.

Potential dangers in the high mountain ranges must be assessed correctly according to the situation. This trek requires high stamina, surefootedness, absence of vertigo and experience with alpine hikes.

Een huttentocht door het hooggebergte is misschien wel de allerbeste manier om het gewone leven even helemaal achter je te laten. Trek de wandelschoenen aan en doe de Kesch Trek in zonnig Graubünden, het dunstbevolkte kanton van Zwitserland, waar veel inwoners nog Reto-Romaans spreken.

Piz Palpuogna, Piz Porchabella, Piz Griatschoula, de bergen rond de Kesch-hut (2625 meter) hebben stuk-voor-stuk prachtige Reto-Romaanse benamingen. Hutbeheerder Reto Barblan is opgegroeid met deze van het Latijn afgeleide taal. Na twee etappes door de Bündner Alpen gestiefeld te hebben, heb ik zojuist bij hem ingecheckt. In het Duits, want Engels leerden ze niet bij hem op school. Reto kan je alles vertellen over de hut, over de waterzuivering, over de hydraulische turbine en over de vergaande afvalscheiding. Na de herbouw rond de eeuwwisseling is alles gemoderniseerd. Het enige wat eraan ontbreekt, is wifi. En wat Reto betreft moet dat vooral zo blijven. In plaats van liken, swipen en filmpjes uploaden, zitten de gasten binnen te lezen of doen gezamenlijk een spel, aan grote, houten tafels.

Lief en ruig

Buiten, op een van de houten banken op het terras, zit altijd wel iemand van het grootse uitzicht op de Porchabella-gletsjer te genieten, met een groot glas bier, een radler, of een koffie na het ontbijt. Nu de zon boven de bergen uit begint te komen, zijn de eerste wandelaars alweer onderweg naar hun volgende overnachtingsplaats. Doel van de derde etappe is Bergün, een dorp met veel traditionele huizen uit de tijd dat Graubünders fortuin maakten in het buitenland. Sommige zijn wel vijfhonderd jaar oud. Bijzonder is ook de versiering van de gevels met sgraffito, een uit Italië overgenomen krastechniek die werd toegepast in nog nat pleisterwerk. Om in Bergün te komen, hoef je vanaf de Kesch-hut alleen maar de lange vallei naar beneden te volgen, een tocht waarbij je de omgeving langzaam ziet veranderen van een ruig en boomloos berglandschap in een lieflijk dorp aan een kabbelende rivier.

Hoogste hut

Een dag later, tijdens de vierde etappe, gaat het weer omhoog, als je vanuit Bergün naar de Jenatsch-hut (2672 meter) loopt, de hoogstgelegen berghut van Graubünden. Het is nog vroeg in de morgen als ik het Lai da Palpuogna (1918 meter) passeer. Vanaf het wandelpad langs de oever zie ik de bomen spiegelen in het verstilde water van het meer (Lai, Lac, betekent meer). Er staat geen zuchtje wind. Ook niet als ik rechtsaf sla voor de klim naar Fuorcla Crap Alv, een 2466 meter hoog pasje dat me naar het Beverin-dal zal brengen. Afdalend over de felbeschenen zuidhelling, volg ik het slingerpad richting de bodem van het dal. Wat een hoeveelheid bloemen, wat een hoeveelheid vlinders, de warme nazomerzon heeft ze nog eens goed wakker gemaakt in deze laatste week van augustus. Ook beneden lijkt de herfst nog ver weg. Onder dikke lariksbomen staat monnikskap, een prachtige, maar extreem giftige laatbloeier, die consequent gemeden wordt door het vee. De hele bosbodem is bezaaid met de paarsbloeiende plant.

In de watten gelegd

Halverwege de middag word ik hartelijk ontvangen door Claudia Drilling, die samen met haar man Fridolin de Jenatsch-hut beheert; ‘Fridolin is Aussenminister , ik ben Innenminister ’, het stel dat vroeger in de bouw werkte heeft de taken goed verdeeld. Claudia was architect in Duitsland, Fridolin bouwopzichter in Zwitserland. Maar als je Claudia bezig ziet, zou je eerder denken dat ze alle hospitality-opleidingen heeft gevolgd die er bestaan. In een berghut zonder douche of drinkwater – water moet er worden gekookt – waan je je in een hotel. Alles is even goed verzorgd; er ligt een vuistdikke informatiemap voor de gasten, een ordner vol publicaties over de hut, en er is een heuse sauna. Claudia is de perfecte gastvrouw. Voor het eten houdt ze een onderhoudend praatje en geeft ze uitleg over het menu. Hoofdgerecht vandaag is capuns-schotel, een op capuns geïnspireerd gerecht, dat net als het traditionele Graubündens gerecht, wordt bereid met spätzle, snijbietbladeren en bündnerfleisch. Even later zitten we collectief te smullen van een verrukkelijke soep, aan een gezellige tafel, begeleid door een uitstekende fles wijn.

Buiten is een enorm kunstwerk opgesteld met een menselijke figuur die over een rij hoge, eikenhouten zuilen loopt. Als Claudia me vertelt dat het Lebenswege heet, begrijp ik ook de vertakking in de rij, in het levenspad. In de kelder van de hut toont de gastvrouw me een metersgroot raamwerk met naambordjes, dat is geplaatst voor de technische installaties. Claudia: ‘Het zijn de namen van mensen die ons helpen, van donoren, alles bij elkaar zijn het er vierhonderd. De meesten van hen hebben hier ooit als gast overnacht. Momenteel zijn we bezig met een project om een elektrische boiler aan te schaffen, daar zamelen we geld voor in, ook bij onze vroegere contacten uit de bouwwereld.’ In de winterkeuken, één verdieping hoger, staan verse kruiden in vaasjes en glazen. Ze zijn meegenomen door gasten. ‘Mensen die hier vaker komen, weten dat ik graag verse kruiden gebruik in de keuken, die nemen ze voor me mee omhoog.’ Aan alles is te merken dat Claudia en haar man vaak een bijzondere band met hun klanten hebben.

Over de Kesch Trek

• Wandelgebied:  Graubünden is het oostelijkste en grootste kanton van Zwitserland. Het enige kanton ook met drie officiële talen: Duits, Italiaans en Reto-Romaans. Alle kans dat je laatstgenoemde taal, een lust voor het oor, hoort als je de Kesch-Trek aan het wandelen bent.  Allegra betekent welkom en Bun-Di! goedemorgen.
• De huttentocht: Bergwandeltocht van de Flüelapas naar Bergün, totale lengte 48 of 56 kilometer.
• Zwaarte/ moeilijkheidsgraad: De Kesch-Trek is een duidelijk gemarkeerde alpiene bergwandeling. Indien mogelijke gevaren (o.a. sneeuw, mist of verijsde paden) goed ingeschat kunnen worden, is de tocht niet gevaarlijk. Wel nodig zijn een goede conditie, (minimaal lichte) bergwandelschoenen en enige tredzekerheid.
• Navigatie: De route is goed bewegwijzerd; verder heb je een goede wandelkaart nodig en enige kennis van oriëntatie.
• Overnachten: Berghutten en één keer hotel.
• Beste seizoen: Eind juni/begin juli of in september is de natuur mooi en de drukte minder. Daarvoor of daarna kan sneeuw een probleem gaan worden. Daartussen zijn de hutten druk en is de natuur minder uitbundig.
• Vervoer naar de Kesch -Trek : Davos is het beginpunt van deze toch en ligt op ca. 900 kilometer van Utrecht. Davos is per auto, trein of vliegtuig bereikbaar.

Etappes van dag tot dag

Dag 1: flüelapas - grialetsch-hut.

2 tot 2,5 uur, 6 km.  Vanaf de pas (2263 meter) naar de hut (2542 meter) kan op drie manieren.

• Veilig en rustig stijgend via het Grialetschdal.
• Via de Tiergartenweg, een Höhenweg, ook goed te doen.
• Of, een 2 tot 3 uur langere variant: eerst de Schwarzhorn (3147 meter) op, een relatief gemakkelijke drieduizender met giga-uitzicht, en dan afdalen naar de hut.

Dag 2: Grialetsch-hut - Kesch-hut

4 tot 5 uur, 16 km.

Afdaling Gialetsch - Dürrboden (2007 meter) - Scaletta-pas (2606 meter) - Val Funtauna (2192 meter) - Val Tschüvel - Kesch-hut (2625 meter).

Dag 3: Kesch-hut - Es-cha-hut

4 tot 5,5 uur, 14 km.

Afdaling Kesch-hut - Alp digi Chants (1999 meter) - Val Plazbi - Fuorcla Pischa (2871 meter) - Es-cha-hut (2594 meter).

Dag 4: Es-cha-hut - Preda – Bergün

5 tot 6 uur, 20 of 12 km.

Es-cha-hut - Fuercla Gualdauna (2491 meter) - Albulapas Hospiz (2312 meter) - Lai da Palpuogna (1918 meter) - Preda (station Rhätische Bahn) - Bergün (1367 meter).

De laatste 8 kilometer (en 400 hoogtemeters) kunnen ook per trein worden afgelegd.

When I helped found a grassroots movement called “Save Khimki Forest” in 2006, it was a bleak time for activists in Russia. There weren’t many precedents for civil resistance other than pro-democracy movements. People were unsure of how to build a movement on an issue like protection of the environment.

All we knew was that we had to do something when the Russian government announced plans to construct a highway through the forest to connect Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khimki Forest is one of the region’s last-standing ancient forests, and home to an abundance of wildlife, including numerous threatened plant and animal species. The forest’s walking and hiking trails also provide much-needed respite from heavy urbanization and air pollution to thousands of greater Moscow residents.

With no public involvement in the decision-making process, the Russian government selected a route that would bisect Khimki Forest, ignoring alternatives that would have left the forest intact. The proposed route stood to yield significant profit from timber and development on open land close to the expensive and densely populated areas of Moscow, while doing little to relieve the notorious traffic congestion in the region.

The extent of the corruption underlying the project became clear soon after that: In 2009, Putin signed a decree that altered the forest’s protected status to allow for “transport and infrastructure.” That same year, the government awarded an $8 billion contract for the highway’s construction to Vinci, a multi-billion dollar French construction company whose Russian investment partners include a long-time friend and supporter of the prime minister.

For years, the defenders of the Khimki forest used many methods of struggle: demonstrations, pickets, and petitions (including one that collected more than 50,000 signatures).

The situation started to change in 2010, when a forest fire near Moscow caused the city to fill with smog. It was impossible to breathe and many people became sick.

Very soon, people realized that the authorities would not solve the problem so they organized to put out the forest fires themselves. The same year, Save Khimki Forest was able to organize the first big demonstration in recent years, gathering a crowd of more than 5,000 people. As a result, the president of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, publicly admitted that the highway project through Khimki Forest was unpopular and called for a moratorium. It was a major victory for civil society. After that, many people understood that they too could stand up and say “no” to unfair government decisions.

Vladimir Putin's regime responded with repressive laws against civil society. The Russian parliament adopted laws to limit demonstrations and a law labeling NGOs that receive foreign funding as "foreign agents." As a result of this law, many NGOs closed. An organized campaign against NGOs is still underway. In addition, dozens of activists have been arrested and imprisoned over the years.

Despite the repression, however, the authorities have not been able to extinguish Russian civil society’s resolve. The number of grassroots movements are growing in size and scope. In 2014, our team decided to support new grassroots groups in Russia and organized the social media portal, activatica.org , which helps grassroots groups to spread news about their activities and experiences.

This helps ensure that future activists do not have to start from scratch, but can learn from the strategies, tactics, victories, and mistakes of previous and ongoing movements. Demand for this kind of guidance is high, as more and more Russians are learning the power and potential for change that nonviolent civil resistance can offer.

Wanneer is het beste seizoen voor de Kesch Trek?

De kesch trek voor beginners kan ik dat, kesch trek kaart, hoe kom ik bij het beginpunt van de kesch trek in graübunden, kesch trek van dag tot dag, de hutten op de kesch trek, paklijst voor de kesch trek, veilige wandeltips voor de kesch trek, waar kan ik de kesch trek boeken.

De regio Graubünden staat bekend om zijn betoverende winterseizoen: romantische besneeuwde bergen, chique skichalets en avontuurlijke pistes. Weinig mensen kennen echter de charme van de regio in het voorjaar en de zomer. Van juni tot oktober smelt de dikke sneeuw en komen prachtige huttentochten waaronder de beroemde Kesch Trek tevoorschijn. De hutten op de Kesch Trek zijn geopend van half juni tot eind september en verwelkomen hun bezoekers met heerlijke lokale gerechten! Juli en augustus zijn de meest populaire maanden voor deze regio. Zorg ervoor dat je goed inpakt, het kan overdag warm zijn, maar de temperaturen in de bergen zijn meestal erg laag als de zon ondergaat.

Kesch Trek - Inclusief voor en na overnachting

Ja, de Kesch Trek is ook geschikt voor iemand die nog nooit een huttenocht heeft gedaan. Maar zoals elke tocht door de bergen moet je er niet te makkelijk over denken. De Kesch Trek is een selfguided wandeling, en daarom is het ondanks het terrein duidelijk gemarkeerd en gemakkelijk te volgen. Toch zitten er ook een aantal pittige dagen tussen met onder andere de oversteek van de Fuorcla Pischa-pas op meer dan 2.800 meter op dag 3. In geval van slecht weer kan daarom ook deze huttentocht plots gevaarlijk worden. Zorg ervoor dat je je huttentocht van tevoren goed voorbereidt. Dat betekent dat je een kaart en een kompas hebt en je zorgt voor de juiste uitrusting. Zorg er ook voor dat je het weerbericht van tevoren checkt en voorbereid bent op plotselinge weersveranderingen. De uitbaters van de berhutten kunnnen je onderweg ook altijd goed adviseren.

De Kesch Trek start vlakbij Davos vanaf de bushalte aan de Flüelapas (2263m), of anders vanaf Dürrboden(2007m) in het Dischma-dal. Beide startpunten zijn goed te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer. Om bij het startpunt van de Kesch Trek te komen, moet je eerst naar Davos reizen. De reis naar Davos kan het beste met de trein worden gemaakt. Het dichtstbijzijnde internationale vliegveld is Zürich, op slechts 150 km afstand van Davos en goed verbonden met de trein. De treinreis door de Alpen is een heel bijzondere ervaring en de beste manier om je Kesch Trek avontuur te beginnen!

Je kunt utieraard ook met de auto naar de Kesch Trek. Je kan (betaald) parkeren op de Jakobshorn-parkeerplaats in Davos Platz. De Kesch Trek start vlakbij Davos vanaf de bushalte aan de Flüelapas (2263m), of anders vanaf Dürrboden(2007m) in het Dischma-dal. Beide startpunten zijn goed te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer.

De Kesch Trek eindigt in Bergün. Vanuit Bergün kun je gemakkelijk met de trein of de tram terug naar Davos. De trein van Bergün naar Davos duurt 1, 5 uur en de tramrit duurt 45 minuten.

In de zomer van 2021 werd de Kesch Trek noodgedwongen aangepast door de verbouwing van de Grialetsch-Hütte en werd er uitgeweken naar het Waalserhuus. Voor de zomer van 2022 is de verbouwing afgerond en is de Kesch Trek weer terug in haar orginele vorm! Bekijk hier onze arrangementen.

Op deze huttentocht in Zwitserland zijn er 3 hutten waar je kunt overnachten. Deze 3 hutten zijn in beheer van de Zwitserse Alpenclub, maar worden gepacht door lokale families. Zoals al eerder gezegd werd in de zomer van 2021 gebruik gemaakt van het Waalserhuus. Maar voor het seizoen van 2022 is de verbouwing afgerond van Grialetsch Hütte en keert deze weer terug in ons programma. De Zwitserse gastvrijheid wacht op je!

Ken je grenzen

Wandelen in de Kesch Trek is de perfecte manier om te ontsnappen aan het dagelijks leven. Het is een duursport samen met een prachtige natuurervaring met een positief effect op lichaam en geest - zolang je in goede conditie bent en een realistisch beeld hebt van je mogelijkheden en grenzen. Overschat jezelf nooit of onderschat de route. Overdrijf het niet! Kies altijd voor de langzamere variant en neem meer tijd voor je plannen. Wandelen onder tijdsdruk is niet leuk en te snel lopen kan gevaarlijk zijn. Wees verstandig!

Plan zorgvuldig

Goede planning is het halve werk! Wandelkaarten, literatuur, het internet en deskundig advies zijn onmisbaar bij het plannen van de route in de Kesch Trek en stellen je in staat om de lengte, hoogteverschil, moeilijkheidsgraad en omstandigheden van de wandeling te bepalen. Bij het plannen van groepswandelingen moet het reisschema altijd worden afgestemd op het zwakste lid van de groep! Het weer in de bergen kan ongelooflijk snel veranderen en regen, wind en kou verhogen allemaal het risico. Controleer daarom altijd van tevoren de weersverwachting en neem contact op met onze trekkingexperts om je weg te vinden voordat je begint.

Volledig uitgerust zijn

Uitrusting is alles. In het meest extreme geval kan het het verschil betekenen tussen leven en dood, en in ieder geval maakt het zeker het verschil tussen plezier hebben en een slechte tijd hebben. Voedsel en water, zonnebrandcrème en waterdichte en warme kleding moeten altijd in je rugzak zitten, evenals een EHBO-kit en een mobiele telefoon met een volle batterij (voor noodgevallen). Het is echter gemakkelijker wandelen als je licht inpakt, dus neem niet te veel extra bagage mee. Je uitrusting moet altijd geschikt zijn voor het terrein waarop je gaat wandelen in de Kesch Trek.

Geschikt schoeisel dragen

Goede wandelschoenen beschermen je voeten en zorgen voor een betere pasvorm. Schoenen met een goede pasvorm, met antislipzolen, waterbestendig en lichtgewicht zijn een must voor extra wandelplezier tijdens de Kesch Trek. Trailrunning-schoenen zijn geweldig voor een weekend in de bergen, maar bij langere wandelingen of meer technische paden wil je op zijn minst A/B-wandelschoenen dragen. Dat betekent dat het dragen van hoge bergschoenen die waterafstotend zijn en extra enkelondersteuning bieden om verstuikingen te voorkomen, wordt aanbevolen.

Blijf op de gemarkeerde paden

De Kesch Trek heeft eindeloze gemarkeerde wandelpaden die gecontroleerd en onderhouden worden en niet verlaten moeten worden. Het kan verleidelijk zijn, maar het is geen goed idee om shortcuts of alternatieve routes door ongemarkeerd terrein te nemen. Het verhoogt het risico op desoriëntatie en je raakt sneller verdwaald en hebt meer kans op ongelukken of valpartijen in de bergen. Zelfs steile hellingen met oude sneeuw kunnen vaak onderschat en gevaarlijk zijn. Twijfel je? Beter niet doen. Voor eenvoudige navigatie werken we samen met onze vertrouwde partner Komoot, wiens interactieve kaarten, ook offline beschikbaar, je de nodige digitale middelen bieden om van A naar B te komen. Zorg als back-up dat je een wandelgids of een papieren kaart bij je hebt. Ter informatie, 75% van struikelingen gebeurt door onoplettendheid op gemarkeerde paden of wegen, niet in open terrein!

Neem regelmatig pauzes

Onthoud dat je op een wandelvakantie bent. Tijdige en regelmatige pauzes zorgen niet alleen voor welkome ontspanning, maar maken het ook mogelijk om te genieten van de Kesch Trek. Het lichaam heeft regelmatige voedsel- en vochtinname nodig om prestaties en concentratie op peil te houden. Ons advies is dat als je weinig tijd hebt, het beter is om het korte reisschema te volgen dan de lange route te versnellen.

Blijf bereikbaar

Als je alleen wandelt of in kleine groepen, is het raadzaam om mensen thuis op de hoogte te stellen van je plannen, welke route je neemt en wanneer je van plan bent terug te keren. Zelfs kleine incidenten kunnen leiden tot onaangename noodsituaties, dus zorg ervoor dat je te allen tijde bereikbaar bent. Neem een opgeladen telefoon mee met ten minste de telefoonnummers van directe familieleden, je accommodaties onderweg en de noodtelefoonnummers die gelden in de Kesch Trek.

Respecteer de natuur

Laat geen afval achter, voorkom lawaai, blijf op de gemarkeerde paden, verstoor wilde dieren of grazende dieren niet en respecteer beschermde gebieden.
