A place that nature lovers will want to head to is Sungai Sedim Recreation Park, which happens to house Tree Top Walk Sungai Sedim . Measuring a whopping 925-metres long and 26-metres above forest level, the canopy walk is considered the world’s longest rainforest canopy walk. 

While you venture across the sturdy walkway made of steel, you’ll be treated to a bird’s eye view of flowing waters and lush greenery all around you – as its name suggests, you’ll feel like you’re walking above trees.

Expect to spend about an hour soaking up the sights while finishing the walkway loop, which forms a rectangle that hovers over trees and crosses the stream twice. A small entry fee of RM10/pax for adults and RM6/pax for children ages between 7 and 17 years old is required.

Another activity to check out at Sungai Sedim Recreation Park is whitewater rafting . This thrilling water sport lets those with an adventurous soul navigate the cool rapids of the park, which stretches 15km long and is hailed as one of the best rafting spots in Kedah. 

Water Rafting Sedim is a local rafting centre that has Rafting Packages (RM130/pax) for thrill-seekers looking to try out this exhilarating activity. You can try rafting down 2.5km rapids, with essential equipment such as helmets and vests provided and also a professional guide to help you navigate your ride.

It’s not every day you get to come across a historic archaeological site. Over in Bujang Valley near Merbok, there happens to be such a site called Sungai Batu Archaeological Site . 

The complex comprises over 50 site excavations, where jetties, smelting plants, ritual sites, a temple, and more have been discovered and are believed to date back 2,000 years ago. As such, it is considered one of the oldest discovered civilizations in Southeast Asia – surpassing Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and Indonesia’s Borobudur civilizations.

Today, excavations are still being carried out by researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia, with the National Heritage Department co-managing the site. Visitors are welcomed to explore the area for free with QR codes to be found around the discoveries, or you can opt to join a guided tour for RM20/pax.

If you want to try your hand at activities such as brick making, excavation, and iron smelting, there are packages available for RM80/pax.

There’s also a Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum , just a 10-minute drive from here. The free-entry museum houses various archaeological collections that highlight the Bujang Valley area as a prominent port in Southeast Asia and a key propagation area for Hindu and Buddhism between 3rd-12th century AD.

Langkawi is rightfully known as the Jewel of Kedah, with a total of 99 islands providing a tropical escape for Malaysians and tourists alike. But a lesser-known island that you can visit to avoid the crowds there is Pulau Songsong, in the district of Yan in Kedah.

It’s one of four islands part of Jerai Geopark, and is untouched with no resorts or residences to be found here. It stretches 62 acres and is flanked by sandy shores and crystal clear waters.

The lesser-known island is where locals head to for a variety of water activities: swimming in the ocean, snorkelling, or even just having a picnic on the beach. 

To reach Pulau Songsong, you can find boat services at Sungai Udang Jetty – the journey will take about 15-20 minutes. As there aren’t any food stalls on the island, you’ll want to consider packing your own food and water.

Those who are looking for more architectural splendours to marvel at in Kedah can head to Wat Nikrodharam Temple . This 55-year-old Buddhist temple blends Chinese and Thai architectural styles, with a main gate and grand entrance both featuring beautiful and intricate carvings of floral motifs that are distinctively Thai.

This Siamese-style temple in Alor Setar was built back in 1968, and has become a landmark in the state capital as one of the largest and oldest temples there. It’s also the host of the city’s auspicious Wesak Day celebrations, with devotees coming by to pray.

Just a stone’s throw from the Kedah River is a grand wooden mansion – this is where the late Tunku Abdul Rahman stayed whenever he visited Kedah during his tenure as the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. 

The historical house is known as Rumah Merdeka, or the Tunku Abdul Rahman Memorial. 

The architecture of the house is pretty unique – the top portion is made of wood and the bottom of bricks. This was because the house was built completely of wood in 1942, and later refurbished with a sturdy bricked base in 1953. 

Besides being the residence of Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the house is also the site where the scripts of The Curse Of Mahsuri and Raja Bersiong were said to be written.

When you visit this historical house, you’ll get to see the personal collections of Tunku and his family, who used to live here, on display. Do note that no photography is allowed inside the house, but you’re free to take photos of the house’s exterior and various displays in the garden, including a motorboat.

There are plenty of water parks in Malaysia . One you can visit while in Jitra, Kedah, is Fantasia Funtastik Aquapark – it’s a cosy 4-5 acre water park that features five attractions that the whole fam will enjoy.

Surrounded by the serene Darulaman Lake, the water park is home to thrilling twin water slides, kid-friendly pools, and a lazy river. A highlight here is the Play Giant Pool , where you can splash in cool, shallow waters with fountains scattered around the pool for maximum splash.

Thrill-seekers looking for a sky-high activity in Kedah can try Tandem Paragliding (RM250/pax) at Pantai Merdeka, or Independence Beach, with Gunung Jerai Paragliding Park . They offer packages for a flight above Kedah’s lush jungle trees, paddy fields, and Yan’s islands.

Each flight spans 15 minutes, and you can expect to take flight 140 metres in the air with an experienced guide in tow. You’ll also be soaring with a view of Mount Jerai , which is the second highest peak in the state of Kedah that reaches up to 1,217 metres above sea level.

Stunning places of worship are plentiful in Malaysia – you’ll find breathtaking Indian temples , Chinese temples , and mosques speckled around our country. Over in Kedah, you’ll find Zahir Mosque , one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia that was built back in 1912.

The stunning mosque was built on the former tomb site dedicated to Kedah warriors who died during the Siamese invasion of Kedah in 1821. The mosque stands tall today with its prominent black domes, visible even from afar – a huge centrepiece dome is surrounded by four smaller ones, each representing the five pillars of Islam.

It also features a whopping 261 pillars , and is celebrated for its blend of architectural styles from three regions: the Middle East, India, and Malaysia.

Do note that visitors who wish to enter the mosque will have to dress modestly, which means loose-fitting clothes that cover the arms and legs and scarves to cover the hair.

Located just a short 5-minute drive from Menara Alor Setar, Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir Mohamad – or Mahathir’s House Of Birth – is a historic house museum that was once the residence of our country’s former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir.

In 1992, the National Archives of Malaysia reinstated and refurbished the house where he spent his younger days, converting it into a free-entry museum. Today, history buffs can visit it to learn more about the life of the longest-serving prime minister in Malaysia.  

The traditional wooden house on stilts itself has been well-preserved and sectioned into three zones that explore a part of Mahathir’s life – from his early days as a medical practitioner to his political career. You’ll find various photographs and artefacts on display, as well as personal belongings from his childhood such as a trishaw and a bicycle. 

Admission to the museum is free , and you can expect to spend about 30 minutes exploring all the exhibits here.

Those feeling the heat in Kedah will want to stop by Junjong Waterfall, or Air Terjun Junjong, a well-known local hangout spot in Kulim. The lower part of the waterfall is landscaped with natural pools, which offer cool waters for you to take a dip in and relax.

There are pathways so you can climb further up the hill for a closer look at the waterfall. Otherwise, you can catch a view of the cascade from the base, which is just a short walk from the parking lot. There’ll be  a small parking fee of RM2 for private vehicles.

2. Menara Alor Setar, Kedah

Menara Alor Setar is a telecommunications tower and a contemporary example of modern architecture. The building is 165.5 meters in height. It is the second-largest tower in Malaysia and holds the rank of the 19 th tallest globally. 

It was constructed with a total cost of RM40 million and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato ‘Seri Dr Mahathir Mohammad (Tun M), on 14 th August 1997. Although it was built to develop telecommunications technology, it soon became famous amongst tourists. 

There is also an Observatory that is located 88 meters high from the site to see the moon to mark the beginnings of Muslim months. The tower also has restaurants and souvenir shops.

3. The Big Clock Tower

35. Beris Lake Vineyard

Not many people are aware that Kedah has its own vineyard. Located just next to Beris Lake, you should definitely visit this place to enrich your knowledge about the different types of grapes and the harvesting process. To enter this vicinity, you will need to pay an entrance fee.

1. Zahir Mosque

Zahir Mosque is the first Kedah tourist attraction.

Zahir Mosque is well-known as one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia . It was built in 1912, and has been voted one of the top 10 most beautiful mosques globally. You should come and visit this mosque as it is one of the country’s grandest and oldest mosques.

You can visit the mosque, enjoy the exceptional architecture, and take some awesome pictures for memories. Enjoy yourself by seeping in the beautiful view of the mosque, which is said to have a Moorish architectural style influenced by Masjid Azizi , a mosque in Langkat, North Sumatera.

Note to remember, always wear extra fabric, or a sarong and cover your legs when you visit any mosque, as it is considered a place of religious activity and holy. 2. Al-Bukhary Mosque

Another well-structured mosque in the Alor Setar district is the Al-Bukhary Mosque .

With wonderful and unique architecture from the Uzbekistan’s and Mamluk’s era, you can gaze at the beautiful building and take some nice photos. It is peaceful here, so take the opportunity to rest and free yourself from the hustling busy city life.

This tower is officially the main Alor Setar tourist attraction.

 There are a lot of interactive displays like a small 3D viewing cinema and themes galleries, and activities like rock climbing, moon-walking, and cycling on a tightrope. If you come without children, it might be a bit boring.

5. Kedah Paddy Museum

The main highlight of this museum, however, is the architecture; from the building shaped like rice overflowing from a basket and a vast mural showing farmers doing their everyday duties tending their crops!

7. Kedah State Museum

Another Kedah tourist spot in Alor Setar is the Kedah State Museum . If you are keen to learn about the history of Kedah, then this is definitely the place to go! 

Although you cannot take pictures in the museum, you can still take a stroll outside the impressive-looking building, and take a cruise along the Kedah river nearby.

8. Merdeka House

This was the first Malaysian Prime Minister’s, Tunku Abdul Rahman’s, house . 

It houses all about the history of the late Prime Minister who was the Father of Independence. It is a must-visit if you are a history nerd. The house architecture is awesome, and you get to learn more about this wonderful person and his family.

9. Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir

Aside from the first Prime Minister, you should definitely take a visit to Malaysia’s fourth and ninth Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad’s birth house . 

This place is well-kept to preserve his birthplace and growing condition. There are a lot of old newspaper cuttings, old photographs and a family tree that will keep you interested the whole visit.

10. Pekan Rabu Complex

There are a lot of things to do in Kedah, and one of the most interesting is visiting Pekan Rabu Complex , a flea market. This place offers you a one-stop shopping centre for traditional gifts and crafts, get local snacks, clothing and souvenirs. 

There is also a food court where you can find a lot of different types of food to fill your hungry tummy.

11. Chinatown

Alor Setar’s Chinatown is among the most well-preserved in Malaysia since the 1950s.

 The shophouses are mostly restored with each having its own living quarter, style, decoration, and colour. Here, the main business revenues are printing shops, bicycle repairs, and hardware. 

12. Kuala Kedah Fort

This is the oldest northern Malaysia fort since the 1770s. It is one of the remaining defensive units commissioned by a Sultan that protected Kedah from Siam (now Thailand). 

It is situated next to the Kedah River and the Straits of Melaka. The fort now consists of the remnants of defensive walls, cannons, and a lighthouse.

13. Alor Setar Waterfront

The waterfront along the Kedah River creates a peaceful surrounding if you are looking for a little serene break from the busy city life. It is situated near Chinatown. 

Families and local photographers love this spot and it is a popular Kedah tourist spot.

14. Paddy Fields

As the “rice bowl” of Malaysia, you can enjoy the view of paddy fields around the district, and almost throughout the state.

Sungai Petani Attractions

Other than Alor Setar, Sungai Petani attractions are ones you should not miss as well. This district has a lot to offer, specifically the natural attractions.

1. Kuala Muda Whispering Fish Market

If you have the opportunity to be at a homestay here, don’t miss out on joining in at Kuala Muda Whispering Fish Market . Locals whisper while bidding to buy their mixed fish. It has been a tradition for the locals here. 

The buyers will look at the produce brought up fresh from the water and whisper the bidding price that the fishermen desire. They do not seem to want to change this tradition as it is a calm way of doing business and anyone can bid without having to scream their hearts out.

The highest bidder will get to buy the desired fresh mixed fish! It is a unique norm that you might want to delve into and be part of.

2. Sungai Petani Clock Tower And Zero KM Square

It is not every day that you get to find the Zero Kilometer landmark, and Sungai Petani has one! In addition to that, you can visit the Clock Tower nearby for some great photos and just to chill. This spot is best viewed at night with beautiful and colourful lights.

3. The Carnivall Water Theme Park

This water theme park is situated at Cinta Sayang Resort.

4. Semeling Jetty, Merbok River

Near the Semeling Jetty, you can find the Mangrove Forest Reserve Museum, auditorium, and tourist information centre. 

You can enjoy looking at the untouched mangrove forest by going on a river cruise through the forest along Merbok River. Enjoy the natural swamp as you cruise along the river away from the city view.

5. Arked Tanjung Dawai

Not far from Semeling Jetty, you can visit Tanjung Dawai , a fisherman village. 

This village is well-known for selling fresh seafood, and you can reach here either from Merbok or from Yan. You can buy various seafood from Arked Tanjung Dawai.

6. Merdeka Beach

If you yearn for some very good food, Merdeka Beach has those to offer.

7. Pulau Sayak Village

Situated approximately 30km from Sungai Petani, Pulau Sayak Village is famous for its prawn noodles local cuisine.

Yan Attractions

Yan is the smallest municipality of Kedah. Despite that, Yan is famous for its divine nature Kedah attractions. 

1. Mount Jerai

Mount Jerai is the pride of Kedah, the main Yan Kedah attraction, with a height of 1,175 meters , so visiting it is a must! 

Historically, the mountain was once an island called Pulau Serai before the sea levels receded, forming it into a mountain. The Hindus considered this mountain sacred, thus, they built temples from the foothills to the summit. 

2. Seri Perigi Waterfall

If you are into hiking, then, you can check Seri Perigi Waterfall as a hiking destination when you’re in Kedah.

 This waterfall in Kedah is considered one of the tallest, which is more than 100 meters tall. You need to take around 30 minutes to hike to reach the top. 

3. Murni Beach Waterfront

Murni Beach Waterfront is the best Yan Kedah attraction. 

There is nothing much to do here, but if you are looking to just spend some quality time gazing at the beautiful sunset and enjoying good food with your family, this is the place.

3. Junjong Waterfall

This waterfall is well-known among the locals of Kulim, Kedah.

Kedah (also known with honorifics as Kedah Darul Aman, literally "Kedah, Abode of Peace") is a state in the northern part of the West Coast of Malaysia . It borders Thailand to the northeast and east, the state of Perlis to the north, the state of Penang to the southwest, and the state of Perak to the south. Kedah is nicknamed "The Rice Bowl of Malaysia" (Malay: Periuk Nasi Malaysia ) because of the vast paddy plantation along the western plain of the state.

Kedah, like Penang, is composed of two parts: mainland Kedah, which has 11 districts, and the island of Langkawi . Langkawi is the main tourist attraction.

Regions [ edit ]

Kedah is split into 12 administrative districts, daerah in Malay. They are, from north to south:

• Langkawi : An island full of tourist attractions and a popular folklore of its own. It is the westernmost part of Kedah, and shares the same latitude with Perlis .
• Kubang Pasu : The northernmost district in mainland Kedah. This district has a lot of educational institutes; one of them is the Universiti Utara Malaysia, or Northern University of Malaysia.
• Padang Terap : This district is where the Pedu Lake is situated.
• Kota Setar : This is the main administrative district of Kedah, as the capital of the state, Alor Setar , is located here. It's also one of the gateway to Langkawi Island.
• Pendang : This district is primarily covered with paddy field, and agriculture is its main economic activity.
• Sik : This is the largest district in Kedah. It's where the Muda River starts. This river is vital for the irrigation of paddy fields in Kedah.
• Yan : The smallest district in Kedah. On its border is the Mount Jerai, the tallest peak in Kedah that is situated between this district and Kuala Muda.
• Kuala Muda : Sungai Petani , the second-largest city in the state, is located here. There's also the Bujang Valley Archaeological Site that has the remnants of the past Hindu-Buddha civilization that was once in Kedah.
• Baling : This district is famous for its Raja Bersiung (lit. "The King with Fangs") folklore, and the Bukit Hijau Recreational Park.
• Kulim : Bordering Penang in the west, Kulim is an ever-developing district where the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, the first high technology industrial park in Malaysia that was established in 1996, is situated.
• Bandar Baharu : The southernmost district of Kedah.

Where to Go in Kedah

As an island archipelago surrounded by inviting turquoise waters, Langkawi is a duty free paradise,. With the sunset view at several beaches looking like postcard moments, there is no wonder that Langkawi is the main attraction for visitors to Kedah. With excellent diving sites and many other attractions such as Underwater World Langkawi, Pantai Cenang beach, and the Sky Bridge in Pantai Kok where you can walk amongst the mountain tops, Langkawi is a place that never tires. Make sure to rent a vehicle so you can cover the island, and remember to plan time for duty free shopping in the malls.

Gunung Jerai (Mount Jerai) 

Also known as Kedah Peak, get close to nature at Gunung Jerai through the Titi Hayun Recreational Park, the Batu Hampar Forest Eco Park, or the Sungai Teroi Forest Recreational Park. With beautiful waterfalls such as the Alor Naga Waterfall and the Puteri Mandi Fall, a visit here will charge your batteries and reconnect you to your wild side.

Gunung Keriang Recreational Park

Gunung Keriang or Elephant Mountain got its shape from limestone quarrying. Explore the geological wonders within that are 250 million years old, or jump into the bat caves and hear them shriek. The recreational park on the south-eastern side of the hill has well formed walking trails for you to get your dose of nature in a safe way, while the viewing gazebos atop give you a gorgeous view of endless paddy fields.

Pendang Lake Resort

Experience the tranquility of a small town with a rustic style overlooking lake Pendang. Spend an afternoon fishing or riding along the paddy fields and get a natural soak at the Bukit Hijau waterfalls before ending the day at the night market where local delicacies are cheap and plentiful.

Tasik Beris (Beris Dam)

Visit the grape vinyard for the freshest of grape juices, and soak in the tranquility of the lake as you rest by its calm waters. Spend the afternoon fishing or engaging in boating activities. With a multitude of forest trails around the area, coupled with a little animal farm where you can see goats, ostriches, porcupines and peacocks, Beris Dam is a relaxing place to spend a day. Don’t forget to try some durian and cempedak at the fruit orchard before you head home

Ulu Muda Eco Park

Offering wildlife sightings in droves, the Ulu Muda Eco Park boasts birds, reptiles, tapirs and even elephants in their natural habitats. As one of the most remote eco parks in Malaysia, see a part of nature rarely visited by man. Visit limestone caves, hot springs and wildlife hides to get a glimpse of the wild unadulterated by tourists.

Kedah Paddy Museum

Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum

Check out relics from ruins dating back to the 3rd Century AD in the Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum. Situated in a beautiful and secluded valley, relax in the museum grounds after walking around the ruins of the former Hindu-Buddhist civilization that lived here before Islam came to Malaysia.

A border town at the Thai side of the border, get a massage in the day and hunt for the best street foods before partying it up in the vibrant night scene here. You can also visit the Asian Cultural Village and the Dinosaur Park in the day, or drive further up north to visit some of the striking Buddhist temples in the area.

Ulu Legong Hot Spring

The Ulu Legong Hot Spring Recreational Center is one of the rare hot springs that are open 24 hours a day. With water temperatures between 30 to 60 degrees Celsius and a high mineral content in their 5 pools, many locals flock here to kick back and relax, or seek relief from ailments and skin problems by soaking in the hot springs. You can also book a homestay package nearby, and get a tour package to climb Mount Baling.

Alor Setar Tower

One of the most recognizable buildings in Malaysia, the Alor Setar Tower is the most striking building in Alor Setar. With an observation deck at 88m up, get unparallelled bird’s eye views of the city! You can watch the sun set in the distance beyond the horizon, then have dinner at the revolving restaurant for a scenic evening.

Terusan Wan Mat Saman (Wan Mat Saman Aqueduct)

A 35km structure linking Alor Setar to Gurun in the south of Kedah, the Wan Mat Saman Aqueduct transported water from Sungei Kedah across the state to boost rice production. A key factor in the modernisation of Kedah that boosted its agricultural prowess, this longest aqueduct in Malaysia runs along Route 1, with buildings dotted along its length.

Where to Eat

Market: pekan rabu (wednesday market).

This is the best place in Kedah to buy traditional snacks, clothing, and souvenirs. With a food-court on the ground floor, traditional gifts and craft on the second floor, and local food produce to buy on the top floor, make sure to stop by here before you head home from your trip!

What to Eat

The pride of Kedahans must be their Laksa Kedah which is both sour and sweet from the fish based asam gravy. Do also try their Gulai Nangka, a jackfruit curry served with steamed rice. If you have a sweet tooth, try the Bahulu cermai (sponge cake) with black coffee, dodol (a sweet sticky cake), and Kuih Karas, a snack that resembles dried noodles.

Where to Stay

With Alor Setar and Langkawi as the main populated areas of Kedah, you can find a range of accomodations to suit your budget at each location. If you are camping or intending to visit some of the resorts further upstate, make sure to stay at the local resorts or homestays to maximise your adventure!

How to Get There

Kedah, one of the country’s northern gateway, is 450km from Kuala Lumpur and shares a border with Thailand. To get here, you can travel by air, road, rail or sea transportation.

Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, AirAsia and Malindo Air operate daily flights to Alor Setar from Kuala Lumpur. The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Kepala Batas is about 20 minutes’ drive from Alor Setar.

You can take a five-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kedah via the North-South Expressway. Air- conditioned express buses to Kedah can be boarded at the Jalan Duta Bus Terminal and Terminal Bersepadu Selatan in Kuala Lumpur. These buses provide services to Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Gurun, Jitra, Kulim and Bukit Kayu Hitam. Express buses and taxis are also available from all other states in Malaysia to Kedah and vice versa.

KTMB’s electric train or ETS provides daily services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar. The Senandung Langkawi express train departs from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur and stops at major towns in Kedah such as Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Gurun before proceeding to Haadyai in Thailand.

Visitors heading for Langkawi should disembark at Alor Setar or Arau in Perlis and proceed to the respective jetty terminals to arrange their transfers.

The border town of Bukit Kayu Hitam is the entry point for visitors who are driving from Sadao, Thailand. There is an Immigration Office and checkpoint at the border crossing that is open from 6.00am to midnight (Malaysian time).

You can get around by renting a car, or by hailing taxis. You can also use Grab to get around.

Where is kedah.

Kedah is one of the northernmost states of Peninsular Malaysia, just south of the Thai border at Yala. It is also northwest of Penang.  

How to Go to Langkawi

Langkawi Airport (LGK) is the main airport serving Langkawi. You can board a flight to Langkawi from KL, Penang, Subang and Singapore. 

If you prefer overland travel, you can take a ferry to Langkawi from Penang, Kuala Perlis, and Kuala Kedah, and Tamalang. If you are travelling from KL, the fastest way to travel overland would be to take the bus to Kuala Perlis, before taking the 1 hour 15 min ferry ride to Langkawi. This is the shortest and fastest ferry ride if you worry about being seasick. You can also take the train to Kuala Perlis from KL, but the journey will require multiple transfers.

If you are driving, take the North-South highway north towards Alor Setar. Note that the drive is about 450km and will take close to 5 hours from KL.

How to Go to Dan Nok

Dan Nok or Dannok is a little border town just across the Malaysia-Thailand border. From Alor Setar, take the North-South Highway or route E1 to the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration checkpoint. Right across the border is Dan Nok.

Welcome to Kedah Malaysia

The state of Kedah spans approximately 9, 425 sq. km in the northern part of the Peninsular and together with Perlis, Perak and Kelantan, shares a common border with neighbouring Thailand. It is a fairly small state. Its population is about one million primarily Malay, though significant Chinese and Indian minorities can be seen. It is known as the “Rice Bowl of Malaysia” where its rice plains together with Perlis produce more than half of the country’s home grown rice supply. Its state capital is Alor Setar.

Kedah’s early history can be traced from the prehistoric period to the archeological site of Bujang Valley, the early Maritime trade of India, Persia, Arabs to the written works of the early Chinese pilgrims and early Chinese records, the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa or known as the Kedah Annals to the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah. Kedah was also known as Kedaram, Kidaram, Kalagam and Kataha by the Tamils. It was known as Kalah or Kalaha by the Persians.

W hat are the top Kedah attractions?

Kedah is a medium sized Malaysian state in terms of area and population. Much of Kedah has a rural feel to it and it is known as the rice bowl of Malaysia. Its landscape is dominated by rice paddy fields with occasional limestone hills towering over the surrounding plains, forests, lakes, mountain ranges and beautiful islands.

Its Sultanate has the longest history of any in Malaysia and there are archaeological sites, museums and historic places to visit. All this adds up to a range of experiences for the visitor who wants things to do.

Here is my suggested list of what to see in Kedah.

Bujang Valley

Enchanting Bujang Valley in Kedah has ancient ruins and artefacts from a lost Hindu-Buddhist civilisation. It is well worth a visit. 

Kuala Kedah Fort

Historic Kuala Kedah Fort is an interesting place to visit while in Kuala Kedah, the jumping off point for Langkawi. There is famous laksa near here too.

Gunung Jerai - Kedah Peak

Take a drive up Gunung Jerai to enjoy cool mountain air and (if you are lucky) great views over the Straits of Malacca. On the way you can stop off at the Forestry Museum. There is a smart new hotel near the peak. 

Alor Setar Heritage Trail

The city of Alor Setar has a number of heritage landmarks to see. With this self-guided Alor Setar Heritage Trail you can visit the best sights that Kedah's state capital has to offer. Map included. 

Paddy Museum - (Muzium Padi)

A large museum devoted to all things related to paddy, the rice plant. The highlight is a 360 degree diorama portraying typical rural Kedah landscapes. 

Gunung Keriang

This spectacularly shaped limestone hill has caves, a recreational park and vendors selling crystals. 

Langkawi is the most popular of an archipelago of 99 beautiful islands famed for miles of white-sand beaches, jungles, caves, mountains and not forgetting duty-free shopping. 

Tree Top Walk Sungai Sedim

Tree Top Walk Sungai Sedim is the world’s longest rainforest canopy walk located in an unspoilt corner of Kedah. Hiking, adventure and team building activities are located here too.

Kota Kuala Muda Tsunami Memorial

The Kota Kuala Muda Tsunami Memorial is a poignant reminder of the devastating tsunami of 26 December 2004 which affected this part of Malaysia and neighbouring countries. 

Merdeka Bridge

Merdeka Bridge (Jambatan Merdeka) spans the River Muda separating Penang state from Kedah. It was the scene of fighting during WWII.

How to Get to Kedah

Travel by luxury coach is an economical and relaxing way to get to Kedah. Regular coach services run from KL Sentral and TBS Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar and Jitra.

First Time Visitor’s Guide to Alor Setar, Malaysia

I’ve passed through Alor Setar many times over the years, but I was usually en route to somewhere else. It took a pandemic (and travel limitations) for me to discover what a true gem this Malaysian city is. Beyond, of course, the ferry terminal, bus and train stations. With their home state of Kedah’s tagline of “Where it all began.” I can now believe it. The diversity and historic significance of the entire Kedah region is impressive. But Alor Setar itself? A pleasant surprise for anyone exploring northern Malaysia. History, culture, food, shopping and even street art; you name it and Alor Setar probably has it. There are so many things to do in Alor Setar you will need several days just to cover the bulk of it.

But for newbies to this eclectic city, here’s a little background info and mini guide for first time visitors. Although I’m no expert on Alor Setar, hopefully I can at least help you cut to the chase a bit and make the most of your time there. *Do note that this mini guide was created between pandemic era ‘lockdowns’ and regular hours of operation (or access), for some listings, are likely to be affected.

Where is Alor Setar?

Alor Setar is located in the Kota Setar district of the state of Kedah in Northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. The city is about 257 square miles in size. It’s the second largest city in Kedah after Sungai Petani. Alor Setar is also the state capital of Kedah. The capital city is about 48 kilometers from the Malaysia-Thailand border and about 12 kilometers from Kuala Kedah and the mouth of the Kedah River where it connects with the Straits of Melaka.

Kedah’s own history is unique, vast and complicated. Knowing any part (or version) of it may give visitors a greater appreciation for what this region of Northern Malaysia has to offer. Archaeological evidence discovered in Kedah’s Bujang Valley show that a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom ruled Kedah as early as 110 A.D. proving ancient Kedah to be one of the oldest (if not the oldest) civilizations in Southeast Asia. Kedah was once also part of the Kingdom of Setul Mambang Segara from 1808 to 1916. This kingdom included the Province of Satun, Thailand .

The kingdom was created due to the partitions between the rulers of the Royal House of Kedah, after the King of Siam (Ayutthaya Kingdom) decided to replace Sultan Dziaddin Mukarram Shah II (the 21 st Sultan of Kedah; 1797 to 1803) with his nephew, Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin II as the ruler of Kedah. That didn’t go over too well with the rightful heir to the throne, so the King of Siam put him (Shah II) in charge of the newly created Kingdom of Setul. Sounds considerate, right? Except the Siamese (Thai) military eventually invaded Kedah in 1821 and basically took over everything for a while anyway.

By 1909, the British Empire got involved and as part of the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 the Kingdom of Setul Mambang Segara was divided once again. The area of present day Satun Province went to Siam and the remaining area became part of British Malaya. Of course, during World War II, when the Japanese military invaded Malaya in 1941, they decided to return Kedah to Thailand. Thankfully that didn’t last too long, but it did last long enough just to help make Kedah’s history a real mish-mash of a complicated turn of events.

Presently there are 12 districts in Kedah and 28 mukims (townships). The Kota Setar district includes namesake mukim Kota Setar, whose capital city is Alor Setar. Alor Setar was founded in 1735, by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II (19 th Sultan of Kedah; 1710 to 1778) as the state’s eighth administrative center. But (according to Wikipedia) it wasn’t until December 2003, that Alor Setar officially became a capital city. At that time, the powers that be changed the city’s name to Alor Star , for some reason. But in January 2009, the powers that be decided to rename Kedah’s capital city Alor Setar again. Alor Setar, by the way, comes from ‘Alor’, which mean small stream or river and ‘Setar’ which refers to the Gandaria or Plum Mango tree (“Bouea macrophylla Griff”).

Things To Do In Alor Setar

Although this mini guide is focused on Alor Setar city, a few other see and do options are just a short drive away and well worth the small effort to get to them. But the bulk of the city sights are in the center of town, within a reasonable walking distance from each other; making sightseeing in Alor Setar a breeze.

KUALA KEDAH FORT & MUSEUM (Muzium Kota Kuala Kedah)

Despite having taken the ferry from Langkawi Island to Kuala Kedah so many times over the years, imagine my surprise to realize that there’s a fort perched seaside, across from the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal . I honestly never knew! Just look across the water at the fort’s lighthouse landmark and you will see just how close it is (as the crow flies). In reality the fort is about a 15-minute drive from the ferry terminal (or RM5 taxi ride). From Alor Setar, it’s only about 13 kilometers.

Fort Kuala Kedah (also known as Fort Kuala Bahang) is considered one of the oldest Malay forts in northern Malaysia. It’s seen a lot of history since its original completion in the 1600s. It was originally built of clay, bakau timber and bamboo by then ruler Sultan Sulaiman Shah (the 12 th Sultan of Kedah; 1602 to 1626) , and Portuguese allies. The fort was initially built to help fight off the Ache Sultanate, who at the time had been destroying pepper plantations in Langkawi in order to monopolize the region’s pepper industry. The Ache Armada eventually attacked the fort in 1619 and took Sultan Sulaiman Shah prisoner.

In 1770, the Bugis Armada also attacked the fort, and despite being repaired numerous times over its lifetime, the fort suffered further damages when the Siamese army attacked in 1821. However, in 1909 when Kedah came under British rule, new government offices were built on the premises, a lighthouse was added, and a new archway was installed to replace the old Kacapuri Archway . That archway, by the way, collapsed in 1970 and was rebuilt in 2000 by the Department of Museums.

Today Fort Kuala Kedah and Museum remains an important Kedah historic site with plenty of information to share. In the center of the waterfront grounds, the old palace turned court house now houses a collection of over 60 artifacts, including archeological findings, ceramics, and old cannons. Display information is provided in English and Bahasa. The grounds are surrounded by old and new brick wall with peep hole windows for a few sea facing cannons. All in all, it’s quite an interesting museum and would likely appeal to fort-loving, children as well as adults. Open daily: 0900-1700/ Entry: Free

KEDAH PADDY MUSEUM (Muzium Padi)

The Kedah Paddy Museum is located near Gunung Keriang, about 10 kilometers from both Alor Setar city center and the Kuala Kedah Ferry Terminal. The Kedah Paddy Museum is surrounded by padi fields and is fittingly modeled after ‘gemai padi’ and cleverly resembles bundles of paddy stalks. There is one main building ‘bundle’ and six smaller bundle buildings surrounding it; totaling about 2,000 square meters.

There are three levels to the museum, with the third (top) level being the biggest scene stealer.  Level 3 has a massive 360-degree mural depicting bird’s eye views of the surrounding Gunung Keriang and Alor Setar landscape. The mural includes vignettes of community life painted throughout the picturesque 360-degree masterpiece. It’s the work of 60 North Korean artists who spent two years living in nearby villages, as part of their pre-mural research. The third level viewing deck also rotates, so visitors can simply gaze out at the horizon and be one with the passing landscape. It’s quite an amazing view.

Level 2 (also the main entrance level) continues the rice journey with six galleries tucked into the ecliptic interior walls of the six gemai ‘bundle’ buildings. The galleries display paintings, illustrations and dioramas of the rice industry both locally and internationally. The cultivation styles of padi farming are also explained. Level 1 is a continuation of rice cultivating, with displays of rice products, traditional rice baskets, tools and various by products. The information provided is in English as well as Bahasa.

The Kedah Paddy Museum is the bomb when it comes to rice museums. It has everything you ever wanted to know about the Malaysia rice industry. I was so excited to have finally had the chance to visit that I even wrote a full ‘review’, which you can read HERE   But you really need to see it for yourself to truly appreciate how cool it is. And be sure to give yourself at least one full hour for your visit. Open daily: 0900-1700/ Entry: RM5

MOUNT KERIANG RECREATIONAL PARK (Gunung Keriang Recreational Park)

From a distance Gunung Keriang does indeed look like the island it is purported to have once been, only now the surrounding sea is padi fields and kampung houses. And like the Hollywood beacon, the Gunung Keriang sign welcomes visitors to this magnificent nature destination. Despite the slightly askew lettering, the sign and mysterious limestone mountain definitely worked its magic on me. I bee-lined it there, on my last trip to Alor Setar, with high hopes of doing some exploring. A mere 8 kilometers from town also makes it an easy day trip.

Mount Keriang is said to be about 250 million years old. Yup, you heard that right, 250 million! The mountain itself has a vast number of mini caves dotting its exterior and obviously popular with Edible Nest Swiftlets , but the grand finale is the not so diminutive Gua Terus (cave) , which is open to the adventuring public who are willing to hike 40-minutes or so to the top of the mountain. This cave is famous for having crystals, which were much more abundant during pre-tourism days. For the less adventurous, there is a recreational park adjacent to the mountain, with a children’s playground, a couple of gazebos, benches and a duck pond. The park also has a small river running through it, with bridges crossing into the nearby kampung.

During the mid-week, when I visited, it was a ghost town. Besides a small group of elderly men, I saw few people, nor were any shops open. Lots of monkeys though! Being as I was alone, I kept to the main road and stayed visible rather than wander off into unknown terrain. I would advise the same for other single visitors as well; especially the ladies.

The park does have walking trails with railings, but do be aware that there are many monkeys just waiting to make new friends, so watch your bags. The main park road skirts the mountain and leads to a non-working elevator and (presently) weed strewn parking lot. It’s unknown to me if this closed area is pandemic related or just planned obsolescence, where popular spots simply fall apart from lack of maintenance.

PEKAN RABU (Wednesday Market)

As a newbie to Alor Setar, I had only seen a few online photos of Pekan Rabu (Wednesday Market) . It was generally touted as a traditional market yet the online photos I’d seen didn’t quite fit the bill. In person it wasn’t the bells and whistles of traditional goods shopping I’d hoped for either… however, timing is everything. My initial visit unfortunately fell late afternoon on a Friday or a holiday and many shop doors were closed.

But a mid-week return visit rewarded me with the potential shopping spree of my dreams. Right off the bat I regretted that there was only one of me (with just two hands) and I was relying on public transportation to boot. It would have been a great challenge to juggle all the goods I wanted. So, a word to the wise, if you are heading to Pekan Rabu to shop, be prepared with extra heavy duty shopping bags or a few extra hands.

But Pekan Rabu is more than just a shopping complex. It’s another one of Alor Setar’s historic gems, with a history which began back during World War I!  Tunku Yaacob Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid (the 18 th Prince of the 26 th  Sultan of Kedah) wanted to show Malays that they could prosper in business, beyond just farming and agriculture, and encouraged them to get directly involved with trading and other commercial activities. His training ground was a Wednesday market (which he started in 1920) near Tanjung Chali. It was named Pekan Nat and later Pekan Rabu.

In 1931, Pekan Rabu was relocated to its present location on Jalan Tunku Ibrahim. By December 1941, the Japanese military invaded Malaya and descended upon Alor Setar. It was during this time that another famous Malaysian was forced to drop his school studies and he went into trading at Pekan Rabu; Alor Setar hometown hero, Tun Dr. Mahathir ; the 4 th and 7 th Prime Minister of Malaysia . He sold fruit and handicrafts at Pekan Rabu until the end of World War II.

But Tun Dr. Mahathir didn’t forget his days at Pekan Rabu. After the good doctor went into politics, he eventually turned the humble Pekan Rabu into a multi-story, shopping complex, which was officially opened in 1978 by then-Deputy Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir, himself. Pekan Rabu got another refurbishing in 2014. Definitely worth stopping in on your future visit to Alor Setar. Pekan Rabu also has an amazing food court, so be sure to save your appetite for some delicious traditional Malaysian cuisine. Open daily: 1000-2000

ALOR SETAR CITY TRAIL (Jerejak Bandar City Trail )

I’m not sure what the intention of this city trail map originally was, because it doesn’t list every visit-worthy spot in the immediate area. But for the directionally challenged you may find it helpful, so snap a photo and follow the trail! Look for the 250 year memorial tower at the corner of Jalan Tunku Ibrahim and Jalan Raja and the map is behind the tower. The following listings include the city trail map’s eight listings.

KEDAH STATE ART GALLERY (Balai Seni Negeri Kedah)

If not for the large paintings adorning the front of this building, its designation as the Kedah State Art Gallery might escape the average tourist. The building was initially used as a high court building and was one of the first modern government buildings in Alor Setar. The building was originally constructed in 1893 and completed in 1912, making its present closure for refurbishing a smart plan.

By 1931, the high court relocated and left the building to eventually (and unceremoniously) become the city’s Public Works and Sewage and Drainage Department’s home offices. Thankfully by 1983, the building’s beauty and historic value found renewed appreciation and it was converted to the Balai Seni Negeri Kedah (Kedah State Art Gallery). The gallery (when open) showcases art works of Kedah artists. *Presently closed for refurbishing

DATARAN MEDAN BANDAR (Park)

Medan Bandar basically means ‘city park’, but rather than grassy knolls this park is more like a slick cement carpark. A picturesque fountain centerpiece and surrounding historic buildings complete the community hangout, especially in the evenings when the place comes alive with family gatherings.

It’s located directly across from the Zahir Mosque and is also home to the Instagram famous Alor Setar sign. From the Menara (tower) you can get a bird’s eye view, which shows how sizable the park is. On the City Trail map, the fountain is earmarked for this listing (#2). Open daily

ROYAL HALL (Noble Hall) (Balai Besar)

Once known as the ‘Grand Audience Hall’, the Royal Hall is where Kedah’s most important events were held; such as royal weddings, coronations and the like. The gate was unfortunately locked when I visited, but the building itself is interesting to ponder from afar. The building’s design was created by Ahmad Lebai Tamby, an architect from the Alor Setar Public Works Department.

The sign at the front states that the original building was built of wood, in 1735, by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Muazzam Shah (the 19 th Sultan of Kedah; 1710 to 1778) and was rebuilt, in 1896/1898, by the Sultan Abdul Halim Hamid Shah (the 26 th Sultan of Kedah; 1881 to 1943) after destructive attacks by Bugis (in 1770) and Siam (in 1821). The original 42 main pillars that were made of hardwood are presently still intact. There are (or were) supposedly golden carvings and Chinese mirrors on the ceiling, which would be lovely to see if they are still there, so if you get the opportunity to go inside go for it! ZAHIR MOSQUE (Masjid Zahir)

Built in 1912, the stunning Zahir Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia. It was officially opened in 1915, by Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah (the 26 th Sultan of Kedah; 1881 to 1943), to honor the Kedah warriors who lost their lives fighting the Siamese army in 1821. Zahir Mosque is also the state mosque of Kedah. The mosque’s design was inspired by the Azizi Mosque in Northern Sumatra. At night, the mosque is lit up making it look especially magical. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome to visit if properly attired; men and women should have arms and legs covered and women are advised to wear a head scarf. Open daily: 0700-1900/ Entrance: Free

BIG CLOCK TOWER (Menara Jam Besar)

Even though town clocks are typically souvenirs from the good (and not so good), colonial times, I really like them. Alor Setar’s Menara Jam Besar is especially interesting because it steers away from strictly colonial style and has additional Islamic as well as Hindu design elements included. The clock tower was built in 1912 to work in tandem with the Zahir Mosque (across the street) and the call to prayers. Do note that the building is actually leaning a bit and it’s not your imagination (or your camera’s fault). Open daily (outdoor viewing only)

SULTAN ABDUL HALIM GALLERY (Galeri Sultan Abdul Halim)

The Sultan Abdul Halim Gallery was built in 1922 and was originally used as a High Court. It was used as a High Court until 2005 and repurposed in 2007 to its present incarnation as a gallery. The gallery houses the extensive collection of memorabilia from the life of Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (the 28th Sultan of Kedah; 1958 to 2017). I had no idea this building was a sightseeing option until someone told me about it later. But I did see it from outside, and have the photo to prove it! Open: Sunday–Thursday, 1000–1700/ Entry: RM5

HALL OF DRUMS (Balai Nobat Tower)

At a glance, the Balai Nobat may just looks like a decorative tower or something. But, oh no, it’s much more than that. Although not listed on the City Trail map, the Nobat tower is the official storage space for royal musical instruments. The three-story tower was originally built (of wood) in the mid 1700s. It has been rebuilt twice since, with the last remodel being in 1906 when it was rebuilt of concrete.

These special musical instruments are used to create what is referred to as Nobat Music; two small drums, two medium-sized drums, a trumpet and a gong are the usual ensemble. Nobat music is only played when requested by His Majesty the Sultan when ceremonial music is required. You can hear what Nobat music sounds like HERE   Open daily (outdoor viewing only)

ROYAL MUSEUM (Muzium Diraja)

Many older historic museums in Malaysia tend to have originally been a royal family home (or palace) before becoming a government building. The Royal Museum is no exception and was originally the Kota Setar Palace . It was built in 1735/1736 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Mu’adzam Shah II (the 19 th Sultan of Kedah; 1710 to 1778), when Alor Setar became the 8 th administrative center of Kedah.

The palace was renamed ‘ Istana Pelamin ’ in 1904 by Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah (the 26th Sultan of Kedah; 1881 to 1943). The Japanese military took over the palace during their World War II invasion and after a few more incarnations, the building was eventually abandoned. Renovations finally came in 1983 and the palace became the Kedah Royal Museum.

Expect to spend at least an hour here as it is jam packed with Royal Family memorabilia. Photography is not allowed beyond the front foyer, so don’t expect to be taking any photos or videos. However, you should bring a notepad because there are plenty of plaques to read (in both Bahasa and English) and you may want to jot down some interesting facts. ALOR SETAR TOWER (Menara Alor Setar)

An absolutely not-to-be-missed in Alor Setar, is a visit to the top of Menara Alor Setar . Not only is this tower your best visual landmark, for ground level navigation, it also offers a bird’s eye view of Alor Setar and beyond. You can even see Langkawi and Pulau Payar Island from the top!

The 165.5 meter futuristic-looking tower is the third tallest telecommunication tower in Malaysia. It has an (inside) observation deck at 88 meters, a revolving restaurant at 94 meters, a banquet hall at 100 meters, and the invigorating, icing on the tower experience cake, an open deck at 105 meters. There are also 2 glass boxes built on the open deck that fearless visitors can get an even better view from.

Although the tower looks very modern in comparison to the many surrounding historic sites, its design is apparently inspired by Kedah and symbolic of some old school specialties that non-locals will be clueless about; such as the tower representing tied rice clusters and the main supporting pillar symbolizing the strength of the people of Kedah. Sounds like a bit of a stretch, but whatever works.

The Alor Setar tower has two high speed elevators that can take you from ground level to the top in 48 seconds. It’s a smooth ride. Attentive (and very friendly) staff are available on all levels. Open daily: 0830-2230/ Entry: RM25-35 (non-KAD)

AMAN CENTRAL MALL

Shoppers rejoice! Alor Setar is blessed with the fabulous Aman Central Mall . Alor Setar actually has several decent malls, but Aman Central was a big hit with this tourist in desperate need of some retail therapy! In addition to Parkson department store, the five-story development offers many international fashion brands (including H&M and UniQlo). With 300 specialty stores and 65 smaller shops, you are sure to find most anything you want or need under the Aman Central roof.

Electronics, food, beauty supplies, books and much more. Aman Central also has the largest cinema in Kedah with 10 screens! Wow, right? There’s an Apple retail and repair shop there too. Open daily: 1000-2200

REFLEXOLOGY

After a day of sightseeing or shopping, nothing beats a foot and leg massage . At least in my book. And nothing makes me happier than to walk through the front door of a spa or massage shop and get immediate attention either. So, for fans of a good rub down, your heaven awaits just outside of Aman Central Mall on Jalan Sekerat . Super affordable too! If you’re overwhelmed by the choices, then just go with ‘ Sihat ’ (in blue letters) or any place where staff are not visibly sleeping in chairs. Your feet will thank you later.

KEDAH STATE MUSEUM (Muzium Negeri Kedah Darul Aman)

If you want to learn about Kedah, Malaysia, the Kedah State Museum is the place to go. Originally known as the Kedah History Museum, the museum has grown, relocated and had a name change since its beginning back in 1957. The Kedah State Museum was (and still is) such a big hit with patrons that funding was allotted to build a new venue in 1997; spacious enough to properly exhibit all of its collections.

The new museum is five floors worth of spaciousness and contains an overwhelming amount of information. Fascinating, but it is a lot to absorb in one visit. There are 10 permanent galleries which cover everything from wedding attire and traditional games to Kedah’s diverse history and wartime activities.

Photography isn’t allowed, but if you have media credentials (or happen to be an award-winning blogger like yours truly) permission may be granted. As long as you don’t interrupt the museum experience of other visitors. The Kedah State Museum exhibits are top notch and the gallery layout is well thought out and easy to navigate. You will appreciate Kedah’s uniqueness even more after visiting this museum. Open daily: 0900-1700/ Entry: Free

ALOR SETAR STREET ART

Having already seen street art trending in 5 other Peninsular Malaysia cities , I was still surprised to discover Alor Setar had also jumped on the bandwagon. Many murals had already existed around Alor Setar, but in July 2020 (during the early days of the Covid pandemic situation), the Alor Setar City Council spearheaded the Alor Setar Art Corner project as part of the state’s RM528,000 city rejuvenation plan.

The area of Lorong Setar , near Jalan Tunku Yaakub and surrounding side streets, now features 18 murals highlighting Alor Setar’s history and heritage. Twenty-six artists were enlisted to tackle this challenge and from what I’ve seen I’d say they’ve been pretty successful. The artists are also members of three mural painting groups; Persatuan Pelukis Alor Setar , Angkatan Pelukis Kedah and Warison Taiping Malaysia .

Lorong Setar begins by Sungai Kedah (Kedah River) near Taman Pesisiran Tanjung Chali and the Pekan Melayu-Pekan Cina bridge. Murals can be seen along Lorong Setar and scattered side streets and alleys, in addition to a few sculptures and interactive 3D paintings. Open daily/ Entry: Free

CELINE TAN CLINIC

One might not typically add ‘get medical services’ to their sightseeing to-do list, but visiting Celine Tan Clinic is what got me to Alor Setar to begin with. I had needed to see a dermatologist and Alor Setar was my best option during Malaysia’s movement control orders, since I was in ‘lockdown’ in Kedah. But what a pleasant surprise. Not only did I get a clean bill of health skin-wise (no skin cancer), I was also introduced to non-invasive, skin enhancement treatments and the world of medical aesthetics.

Celine Tan Clinic’s various treatments are not just focused on aesthetics, they also provide treatments for chronic skin conditions, such as severe acne and eczema. There are, of course, lots more things to see and things to do in Alor Setar than what I have listed, but for the newbies it should be a good start. Kept me plenty busy that’s for sure! Unfortunately, some places, such as Rumah Merdeka and Istana Kuning, I have thus far been unable to actually look inside, but they are still interesting buildings to see from their grounds’ locked gates. One day those gates will be unlocked! Until then, Alor Setar is still a fascinating city to explore, for domestic as well as international tourists.

Where To Stay in Alor Setar

Here’s a tip. For first time visitors, focus on accommodation options in the area of Aman Central Mall; referred to as Kampung Lubok Peringgi if you want to be specific. Otherwise, it’s just ‘Alor Setar’. I stayed at three hotels in this area and two were exceptional. I’ll spare you the gory details of the third hotel, as it was a complete fail. I’m sure there are a few other winners in the area, but I can at least personally recommend two; Royale Signature Hotel and the Fuller Hotel .

ROYALE SIGNATURE HOTEL The Royale Signature Hotel is about 3 city blocks from the Aman Central Mall . It isn’t considered a budget hotel, but I’d say their rates are extremely reasonable for what you get. My room had a plush bed, closet, desk, TV, fast internet, mini fridge, coffee/tea set and a glorious bath tub and rain shower. City views from the windows are also noteworthy.

The downside was the extra walking distance. Especially at night. Other than that, the Royale Signature Hotel is quiet, clean, comfortable, and they have very helpful front desk staff. You can check their rates and availability HERE

FULLER HOTEL On the budget end, the Fuller Hotel is a great choice. The rooms are very basic, but clean and comfortable. Amenities include a desk, TV, fast internet, coffee/tea set, adequate floor space, and a good strong shower.

The Fuller Hotel ’s buzzy location is just one block from Aman Central Mall and plenty of street food nearby in addition to a well-stocked, mini mart across the street. Front desk staff are available 24-7 and keep a sharp eye on the entrance as well. The area is well lit at night too. You can check their rates and availability HERE

Places to eat in alor setar.

Besides a lot of eateries within the Aman Central Mall itself, there are many local cafes and restaurants in the area. Street vendors are also plentiful as well as a 7-11 and a few more Mom and Pop style sundry shops. Across from The Royale Signature Hotel is Café Abang Viral , which looks very promising (but unfortunately, I couldn’t catch them open). And for sushi lovers, there’s Hoya Japanese Restaurant next door to the Fuller Hotel. Hoya serves up generous sized sushi, sashimi and pretty much all of your Japanese favorites. They’re the real deal.

The best grazing options I found, however, were across from the Fuller Hotel down Jalan Pintu Sepuluh , close to busy Jalan Putra. Kafe Rolex (Rolex Café) is a hawkers center that has loads of choices (including vegetarian). The Chicken Rice, is possibly the best I’ve ever tasted too. Beverages are also available (including beer). The vibe is relaxed and friendly for dining in and takeaway is available. I’ve eaten here more than 6 times and have never been disappointed. All good. Really!

Along the roadside near the Rolex Café are several vendors selling noodle dishes, kuih, baked goods and meat on sticks. Try to get there early (mid-afternoon on) because they close up just after sunset or when they sell out.

Another sure shot winner is Pekan Rabu. The food court area of Pekan Rabu is spacious and offer many tasty options throughout the day. Looking for a traditional Laksa Kedah or Laksam Utara? Make a bee line for Gerai Mak Teh . Prefer something more ‘western’? Mama Kami 2 offers hot off the grill burgers and hot dogs!

Down by the river, in Pekan Cina, is Restaurant Hai Choo , which is located inside the compound of the historic Tua Pek Kong Temple (built in 1862!) Hai Choo serves typical Asian dishes and have the quiet ambience of the river, which adds a bit of contemplative magic to their open-air dining experience. After sunset, the lights of the city and the warm glow of the temple’s lanterns are reflected on the waters of the river.

Getting Around Alor Setar

Besides walking, GRAB taxis are the way to go in Alor Setar. They have excellent rates and drivers can be found in some of the remotest of locations. I was even able to get a GRAB pick up from Gunung Keriang Recreational Park in the middle of the week! That ride cost about RM13, btw. You can easily download the GRAB App from Google Play Store too.

How To Get To Alor Setar

One of the beauties of Alor Setar is that you have several convenient choices for getting to and from there. No need for any four-wheel driving through a dense jungle, or using a private tour guide (who’s the only one who knows the way). If you have your own wheels, more power to you, but if you don’t no problem. Buses, trains, ferries and (even) airplanes all service the Kota Setar district making Alor Setar one big, fabulous transportation hub.

CAR: They say all roads lead to Rome? Well, the same could be said for Kedah, Malaysia too. Peninsular Malaysia’s North-South Expressway runs from Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah (the Malaysia-Thailand border) all the way to Kuala Lumpur and beyond. By car, Alor Setar is about a 7-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur and a 1 to 2-hour drive from Penang.

BUS: Bus travel in Malaysia is rock solid, but it can be a bit confusing for newbies  because many small towns are also listed. Thankfully Alor Setar is a major destination and has plenty of buses passing thru; North, South, East and West. If you are booking online , take a good look at the bus companies and what the ride looks like. Some are more comfortable than others, and you can check out the seating options as well. *I like to buy 2 seats (together) especially if it’s a night bus.

TRAIN: Train travel to and from Kedah is superb. And easy. The train station in Alor Setar is close enough to ‘downtown’ to walk to or you can easily call a GRAB taxi from the station. There is a track change in Butterworth, so don’t let that confuse you. ETS (Electric Train Service) operates from Gemas, Negeri Sembilan to Padang Besar, Perlis and has a stop in Alor Setar. KTM (Komuter Train) also provides service between Butterworth and Padang Besar. With a stop, of course, in Alor Setar. This option is part of Langkawi to Penang in 4 Easy (and Cheap) Steps

FERRY: Ferry service to and from Langkawi and Kuala Kedah is daily, with several ferries available. For travel on weekends, holidays and during pandemic lockdowns, it would be wise to secure your tickets in advance. I also recommend purchasing roundtrip just in case, because sometimes tickets will sell out or a last-minute schedule change happens. AIR: In a hurry to get to Alor Setar? The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport is just 11 kilometers north of the Kedah capital city. Air Asia and Malindo usually offer flights there, but that would presently depend on pandemic issues.

Wonderful article! Well done! I know that Alor Setar doesn’t receive the large number of tourists that flock to Langkawi for the beaches, but in my opinion it is an elegant and proud city. I also love the museums and the historic buildings. Thanks for mentioning my father in law, Tunku Yaacob, who founded the market. FYI the fancy shopping mall Aman Central, was originally going to be Plaza Tunku Yaacob, and is on his land.

Thanks Lisa and wow, Aman Central founded by your father in law… wow. I love that mall too. Discovered it during the pandemic. In fact, I discovered Alor Setar during the pandemic because my travel was limited to Kedah state. Which turned out to be a silver lining because Alor Setar turned out to be a real hidden gem. Now I just pop over there for mini staycations when I need to ‘get away’. The people are lovely as well.

KFC shutters over 100 restaurants in Malaysia amid pro-Palestine boycott

KUALA LUMPUR - KFC has reduced its operations in Malaysia, shuttering about 20 per cent of its restaurants temporarily after months of a persistent pro-Palestine boycott of US-linked businesses triggered by the ongoing war in Gaza.

QSR Brands, which owns and operates the KFC fast-food franchise in Malaysia, is suspending operations of 108 outlets nationwide, the Nanyang Siang Pau Chinese-language daily said, based on information from Google Maps.

 The maps show which KFC stores have had their status updated to show “temporarily closed”.

A source at QSR, who declined to be named, said the firm sees the boycott as an opportunity to cease some of the KFC store operations that have weighed on its balance sheet.

QRS said in a statement on April 29 that “in response to challenging economic conditions”, it has taken proactive measures to temporarily close outlets in order to manage growing business costs and focus on the busier KFC stores.

“Employees from the affected stores were offered the opportunity to relocate to operating stores as part of a tactical strategy to optimise resources in trade zones with higher customer engagement,” the company said.

Checks by The Straits Times on three outlets in Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Sultan and Taman Melawati found signs saying they were “temporarily closed”. Boxes were stacked up inside the restaurants. Workers at neighbouring stores said they were closed a week ago because of a lack of customers.

“KFC is not on the BDS list of targeted companies. But many Malaysians see any American fast-food operator to be related to Israel including KFC,” said Professor Mohd Nazari Ismail, chairman of pro-Palestinian group Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions Malaysia.

Since the boycott began in October 2023, KFC has shifted its branding strategy, with signs on their menu boards and fliers emphasising that it is owned by Johor Corporation, which belongs to the Johor state government.

“To mitigate the impact of the boycott, QSR changed its branding strategy to become more Islamic on its website in the fourth quarter of last year,” said the source.

The company’s website said its businesses provide “employment opportunities for over 30,000 employees, of whom 86 per cent are Muslims”.

In the state of Kedah, 11 outlets have closed, according to Nanyang Siang Pau.

Entrepreneur Amri Hasim from Alor Setar in Kedah said that since the boycott began, he has received many job applications from KFC workers, and that its outlets there had reduced their operating hours from 24 hours a day to 12.

“They told me that their salary has been slashed by half. Their basic salary was RM1,500 (S$430) a month and with overtime, they used to earn roughly RM2,000. Now their take-home pay is between RM600 and RM700,” said the 43-year-old who runs a family business producing goat’s milk soap.

There are more than 600 KFC restaurants in Malaysia, according to the QSR website.

KFC and a few other US-based brands such as Starbucks and McDonald’s have been facing boycotts because of their perceived link to Israel since the war in Gaza started on Oct 7, 2023.

KL-listed Berjaya Food, which owns 400 Starbucks stores in Malaysia, reported a net loss of RM42.6 million from October to December 2023, with owner Vincent Tan reportedly considering taking the company private.

QSR also operates KFC restaurants in Singapore, Brunei and Cambodia, as well as more than 480 Pizza Hut stores in Malaysia and Singapore.

North-east Kelantan state is the worst-hit with nearly 80 per cent, or up to 21 outlets, halting their operations, followed by 15 outlets in Johor, Nanyang Siang Pau said.

Selangor, the most industrialised state in Malaysia, has 11 branches temporarily closed, 10 of which are located in Malay-majority Shah Alam.

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 100 outlets of fast-food company Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Malaysia have been “temporarily closed” amid a months-long economic boycott linked to the conflict in Gaza.

Chinese-daily Nanyang Siau Pau reported that 108 outlets of the American chain had ceased operations. Kelantan state was the worst hit, with nearly 80 per cent of their stores, or up to 21 outlets, affected. 

According to the report, based on information from Google Maps, 15 stores in Johor were also temporarily shut, as well as 11 stores each in Selangor and Kedah, 10 stores in Terengganu, 10 stores in Pahang, nine stores in Perak, six stores in Negeri Sembilan, two stores in Perlis, two stores in Melaka, five stores in Penang, three stores in Kuala Lumpur, two in Sarawak and one in Sabah.  

QSR Brands – which owns and operates KFC across Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Cambodia - said that in response to challenging economic conditions, it had taken proactive measures to temporarily close outlets as a means to manage increasing business costs and focus on high-engagement trade zones.

In a statement on Apr 29, they said that employees from affected outlets were offered the opportunity to relocate to busier operating stores as part of the company’s re-optimisation efforts. 

“As a company that has been serving Malaysians for over 50 years, the focus remains on providing quality products and services to customers, while contributing positively to the Malaysian economy through job security for 18,000 team members in Malaysia, of which, approximately 85 per cent are Muslims,” they said.

They however did not disclose the number of outlets or number of workers that were affected. 

According to the QSR website, there are over 600 KFC outlets in Malaysia, with the first outlet opening in Kuala Lumpur back in 1973. 

Checks by CNA on three outlets within a 5km radius in Shah Alam, Selangor, found two outlets with “closed” signs while the other outlet was open but empty.

Sunway University economics professor Yeah Kim Leng said that the country was now seeing greater adverse impacts of the boycotts, which started in October, saying that they impacted employment as well as the supply chains of these restaurants. 

“Of course it is the right of consumers, but we have to be mindful that these boycotts have greater negative effects on the economy rather than the intended purpose,” he told CNA.  

According to several media reports, there have also been closures of several McDonalds and Starbucks outlets in Malaysia.     

These popular chains have been experiencing a slowdown in business as a result of boycotts against US-linked companies linked to the country’s stance in the Israel-Hamas war.

“KFC is not on the (Palestinian-led movement) BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) list of targeted companies. But many Malaysians see any American fast-food operator to be related to Israel including KFC,” said Professor Mohd Nazari Ismail, chairman of pro-Palestinian group Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions Malaysia, quoted in regional media.

Vincent Tan, the founder of Berjaya Corp Bhd which operates Starbucks called on the public in March to stop boycotting the coffee chain, saying the move only hurts the locals running the company.

He has said that 85 per cent of Starbucks Malaysia’s employees are Muslim and that no foreigners are employed at the company’s head office. 

Berjaya Food had posted lower revenue of RM182.55 million (US$ 38.3 million) from October to November of last year, compared to RM 295.32 million in the same quarter a year before, an almost 40 per cent drop in revenue.     

On Apr 18, a Starbucks outlet in Tawau, Sabah, was vandalised by individuals who spray-painted the wall with the words “free Palestine”.

Muslim-majority nations Malaysia and Indonesia have been vocal in condemning Israel for the atrocities in Gaza that have seen more than 34,000 people – around two-thirds women and children - killed in retaliation to Hamas’s cross-border assaults on Oct 7 last year.

KULIM: Four workers at a factory which produces plastic-based products in Lunas, near here, were rushed to Kulim Hospital this morning after they were believed to have inhaled Phenol gas.

The Kedah Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department senior operations commander (Hazmat Team) Assistant Fire Superintendent Hamizul Azwan Hamdan said the department received a call at 9.53am this morning informing them of an incident of gas leak.

"Fire engines arrived at the scene of the incident at 10.12 am, and found that there had been a chemical leak, which is a type of Phenol gas," he said.

"Two workers were in a semi-conscious state, while two other workers, including a Bangladeshi national, are in a state of dizziness and nausea...all of them have been rushed to Kulim Hospital for treatment," he said in a statement on Wednesday (May 1).

He added that the Hazmat team had carried out a decontamination operation on the victims, and around the factory area.

"The Kulim Hi-Tech Hazmat team has confirmed that there are no more readings of dangerous chemicals at the location. The operation concluded at 11.50am," he said. - Bernama
