"Arrive hungry. Leave full and happy."

Definitely arrive with an appetite! We were so pleased with our guide and the places we visited. The food was wonderful and varied...from poutine to ice cream...we also had a wonderful pasta bowl and a veggie bite (cauliflower) that was amazing. I think went to 6 or 7 places and the walk between helped to spread out the food and drink. There were a couple of places with stairs but otherwise an easy walk. Our guide provided a running commentary of the sights around the Gaslight district and was easy to talk with. The group was 16 but it didn't feel "too big". This was my husband's second tour with this company and he is more than willing to go on a third. We definitely recommend this.

Lawn watering restrictions for Metro Vancouver set to run until mid-October

W atering restrictions have begun for the Metro Vancouver region, with some residents planting biodiverse lawns amid an ongoing drought in the province.

The restrictions , which are set to be in place until Oct. 15, have become an annual occurrence as the regional district aims to conserve drinking water.

According to Metro Vancouver, water use increases by more than 50 per cent during the summer months, largely due to lawn watering, which accounts for the highest discretionary use of water outside the home.

This year, the restrictions come amid an ongoing multi-year drought , with B.C.'s snowpack at the lowest level ever recorded in the month of April.

"The recent spring showers have helped to bolster our reservoirs, but we still have a lower than normal snowpack and every expectation of a hot and dry summer," Metro Vancouver Board Chair George Harvie said in a statement.

B.C. officials have warned that the province could face challenging conditions this summer, with an update earlier this spring showing that a low snowpack could exacerbate the provincewide drought due to a lack of rain and snow during the fall and winter.

Metro Vancouver's watering restrictions, which began Wednesday, mean people whose addresses are even numbers are permitted to water their lawns on Saturday mornings, while residents at odd-numbered addresses can water on Sunday mornings.

Automatic watering can take place from 5 a.m. until 7 a.m., and manual watering, such as using a hose to water, is allowed between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Non-residential properties with even numbers are allowed to water lawns on Monday mornings, while odd numbers can water on Tuesday mornings. Automatic watering at non-residential sites may take place from 4 a.m. until 6 a.m., and manual watering is permitted between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Watering other vegetation on residential properties, such as trees and flowers, is allowed daily from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. when using sprinklers, or any time using drip irrigation.

Edible plants on residential or non-residential properties can be watered at any time.

Anyone within the City of Vancouver caught watering outside allotted hours will be issued a fine of up to $250, the city said.

Residents plant alternatives

Meanwhile, advocates encouraged Vancouverites to plant diverse lawns rather than grass, at a walking tour held in honour of Jane Jacobs, a former urban planning guru who championed a community-based approach to city building and who passed away in 2006.

The "Mow it or grow it" walking tour near Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Park was organized to showcase perennial trees, native plants and vegetables as alternatives.

Judy Shinnick, one of the tour guides, said that native plants may not be "showy," but they often adapt better to B.C.'s current climate compared to non-native grass species.

She said some residents near Yukon Street have already planted shrubs that provide ample shade, along with others who have started growing vegetables along with ornamental plants.

"Think about that when you first get started on your garden — what what will work best with little water?" she said.

Ian Hanington, a spokesperson for the David Suzuki Foundation, said studies have shown that grass is the largest irrigated crop in the United States, and it takes up an enormous amount of pesticides and herbicides to maintain a lawn correctly.

"The studies we've seen show that even if just 10 per cent of lawns were converted to habitat, it would have a significantly beneficial effect on insects," he told CBC News. "[Insects] are important for pollination, they're an important part of the food web."

In addition, some native plants don't require as much water, which could help people adapt to water restrictions, he said.

Annual lawn watering restrictions are now in effect in Metro Vancouver, with residents only allowed to water their lawns once a week until mid-October.

Canada Letter

Lessons from the front lines of canada’s fentanyl crisis.

In a visit supported by the U.S. government, a group of Mexican experts came to British Columbia to discuss ways of responding to rampant opioid deaths.

By Vjosa Isai

A person hands a syringe through a slot under a window above a counter. Another person’s hand is reaching for the syringe.

A machine used for chemical analysis, with a slight resemblance to a printer, thrummed repeatedly as technicians at a drug testing site in Victoria, British Columbia, prepared to open its doors to local drug users.

Most of the samples handed to Substance Drug Checking , a lab led by researchers at the University of Victoria, were found to have contained fentanyl, the synthetic opioid driving fatal overdoses in the province to record levels.

Alarm about the spread of fentanyl is entrenched in how Canada and the United States talk about the opioid crisis. But in Mexico, the government has repeatedly denied that fentanyl abuse is spilling over its border and has asserted that the problem is exclusive to its northern neighbors.

Weak detection efforts, in public health settings or during drug death investigations, have meant that the extent of fentanyl’s reach in Mexico is largely an open question.

“We don’t know, because we’re not looking for it,” said Xóchitl Cárdenas, a forensic services chemist at the attorney general’s office in Sonora State, along Mexico’s northern border, where experts say the fentanyl crisis is acute.

Ms. Cárdenas was one of about a dozen Mexican forensic scientists, medical researchers and government workers who traveled to Vancouver and Victoria this week to learn how Canadian agencies are responding to the toxic drug supply. She watched as Pablo Gonzalez, a graduate student running the lab, listed the capabilities of the drug analysis software being developed by the university, which can spit out drug test results in under 30 minutes.

I traveled with the group this week as members visited some of the sites where drug users can receive services — including stalls they can use to inject substances under the supervision of health care personnel, group meetings that offer grief counseling and pharmacies that dispense therapeutic drugs for patients suffering from opioid use disorder.

The Mexican visitors’ trip to Canada was sponsored by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico. In February, the bureau organized a similar tour to a “body farm” in Colorado, a site where Mexican medical examiners observed how decomposing cadavers can be tested for fentanyl poisoning.

Natalie Kitroeff, my colleague who leads the Mexico City bureau at The Times, reported on that visit, which U.S. State Department officials hoped would further their diplomatic goal of holding a mirror up to Mexico’s fentanyl crisis.

[ Read Natalie’s story: How a ‘Body Farm’ Might Help Tackle Fentanyl Abuse ]

Canada is an important partner in tackling the opiod crisis across the region, said Alex Thurn, the deputy director of the embassy bureau.

“The strides that Canada has made in this fight is very impressive,” Mr. Thurn told me, adding that his group hoped to bring its study tour full circle with an invitation for Canadian and American experts to visit northern Mexico.

The trip came as political tensions in Canada erupted over British Columbia’s experimental approach to lowering opioid deaths by decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of the drug for personal use.

[ Read: Canada Decriminalizes Opioids and Other Drugs in British Columbia ]

Public health and policy experts we heard from in Vancouver’s downtown east side, a neighborhood viewed as ground zero of the opioid crisis, said de facto decriminalization had been in place long before it officially began in January 2023. They told us that the police often used their discretion in making arrests but still seized drugs, which commonly sent drug users racing to unsafe options to satisfy their addictions. For those arrested, withdrawal symptoms in prison could have dangerous results.

David Eby, the premier and leader of the New Democratic Party, has been under increasing pressure ahead of the October provincial elections to address public drug use and announced last week that he was looking to effectively shut down that experiment about halfway through its expected three-year run. Doing so requires authorization from the federal health department, which approved the experiment.

Pierre Poilievre, the federal Conservative leader, seized on the drug decriminalization issue this week to attack Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He called Mr. Trudeau a “wacko” in a biting exchange during a question-and-answer period on Tuesday that ended with his temporary ejection from the House of Commons for using unparliamentary language.

Drug overdoses from toxic substances are the leading cause of death among the largest swath of British Columbia’s population, those from 10 to 59 years old. They kill more people than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural diseases combined, according to the coroner’s office, and have caused more than 14,000 deaths in the province since 2016.

Despite politicians backtracking on the issue, a main difference between the drug situations in the two countries is, as the Mexican visitors pointed out, the wide availability of Canadian government funding to address the dangers from opioids.

“We have no support from the government,” said Lourdes Angulo, director of Verter, a nonprofit organization that offers services for drug users in Mexicali, the capital of the northern border state of Baja California.

“We are sometimes afraid for our own safety because the government is always looking for something to stop our organization from doing what we do,” she said.

For experts like Ms. Cárdenas, the chemist from Sonora, the experience of walking through homeless encampments along the streets of Vancouver and Victoria, where outreach workers make their rounds with naloxone kits to reverse overdoses, gave new meaning to the results she would look for in the lab.

“It gives me a different perception of what drugs are like on the streets,” she said.

US singer and songwriter Taylor Alison Swift, also known as Taylor Swift performs on stage at the ... [+] Paris La Defense Arena as part of her The Eras Tour, in Nanterre, north-western France, on May 9, 2024.

Taylor Swift thrilled fans with the addition of performances from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department when she kicked off the European leg of The Eras Tour in Paris on Thursday, May 9, 2024. She jokingly called that section of the show Female Rage: The Musical . Most concertgoers already knew and sang along to every word of all the songs she sang from the album even though it was released just a few weeks earlier on April 19. Such is the power of Swift.

In her long career of riveting live shows, her stunning performance of “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” may very well be her masterpiece so far. Swift is enjoying unprecedented success with her latest albums and tour, which showcase how she can tell a story like no other artist. Both her singing voice and her literary voice are stronger than ever, and it’s joyful to watch Swift embody and embrace her mightiness as a performer.

It's no wonder many fans are willing to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles for the chance to see Taylor Swift perform live. Since tickets sold out so quickly for the few remaining U.S. tour dates and resellers are aware of the intense demand, some fans discovered it was more doable to attend one of her international shows.

So, many fans in the U.S. and other countries have decided to make a vacation out of going to The Eras Tour in Europe this summer. If you are among them, here’s some advice on how to make the most of your international adventure.

Consider Your Lodging and Transportation Choices First

Before buying a ticket, be sure that you will have accommodations available. If you can book a hotel that’s within walking distance of a stadium and know the area is safe, that is ideal. Otherwise, check bus and train schedules for the night of your venue, then look at hotels that might be close to bus or train stops.

With tens of thousands of fellow concertgoers leaving at the same time, transportation can get tricky. If you book a room that’s farther from the venue, try to get a rental car instead of vying for a taxi or rideshare after the show. If you do that, just be sure parking will be available. You may need to buy a parking pass from the venue.

Also be aware that hotel room prices skyrocket when Swift is in town because there is such a high demand. If you are renting a car and don’t mind a longer drive, you can save a lot of money by booking a hotel room that’s a longer drive from the venue.

Enjoy The Moment

Amy Wilkinson, a 49-year-old Swiftie from Tucson, AZ, went viral in December 2023 for her reenactments of The Eras Tour performances using Elf on the Shelf dolls. She posted them to her Instagram, @Tswizzle_Momma , and found thousands of people watching each time she posted her videos. Like many other Swifties in the US, she is flying to Europe for The Eras Tour.

Wilkinson told me she had this advice for fellow fans going to the show abroad, “Enjoy the entire experience, from the moment you get on the plane until the morning after. You may be going for the concert, but the memories are made in the details. See the sights. Enjoy the food. Meet other Swifties. This is at the heart of what international travel is about.”

Make The Friendship Bracelets

Rebecca Bartley, a Swiftie from Nova Scotia, Canada, is going to Sweden to see The Eras Tour. She advises bringing friendship bracelets to share with fellow concertgoers on the night of your show. Wilkinson suggested making friendship bracelets in the language of the country where you’ll be seeing the show.

It’s easy to learn how to make friendship bracelets. I had never dabbled in making jewelry before, but now I find great joy in creating friendship bracelets. I created dozens and handed them to fans at The Eras Tour movie.

To make friendship bracelets, I start by choosing the colors I want and which word or phrase I want the bracelet to express. Then I choose colorful beads and pick out all the necessary letter beads.

Next, I cut off elastic string. I find it’s best to use Stretch Magic elastic string because of its strength and durability. To make the bracelets, I cut off a piece of string that’s twice as long as I need so that there is ample room for cutting and tying multiple knots.

Then I tape one end of the string to my workspace, string the beads I have set aside until I feel like the bracelet is complete. Being careful to not let any of the beads slide off the string, I then wrap it around my wrist to see how it fits and then consider whether I am making the bracelet for a wrist that’s likely larger or smaller than mine. (Also, with elastic string, there’s room for a flexible fit.) I adjust accordingly.

As a last step, I make four to five knots in the string to tie off the bracelet. Many fans choose to add a dab of fabric glue to the end of the knot, but I found that got really messy and wasn’t necessary if you make multiple knots. Then I tuck the knots into one of the beads so that it doesn’t show on the bracelet. Then the bracelet is concert-ready!

Keep in mind that there are a lot of other ways to make friendship bracelets that are for more involved and creative that mine. And, if the idea of making friendship bracelets doesn’t sound fun to you, don’t worry. You can buy premade friendship bracelets on Etsy. Some Etsy shops like RainFoxx13 and BonniesBracelet have elaborate, beautiful friendship bracelets that you may want to keep for yourself. Others sell packs of friendship bracelets in bulk.

If you don’t want to trade friendship bracelets, that’s okay, too. The Swiftie community is accepting and supportive, and you still may get several bracelets as gifts.

What To Wear To The Eras Tour

There are no rules for what you should wear to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour beyond the guidelines from the venue. Some fans go casual, and others choose to dress to the nines for the show. Some fans choose to wear merch from Taylor Swift’s official store . Many fans choose to dress up in costumes inspired by Swift’s songs and lyrics.

With the release of The Tortured Poets Department and its video “Fortnight,” some fans are choosing to imitate some of her looks from the video. Others are wearing their interpretation of the incredible costumes she wears during The Eras Tour concert. Others look at past eras for inspiration. You are likely to see every era represented in fan costumes at a show.

What You Should Bring To The Eras Tour In Europe

Wilkinson advised me that the number one thing to bring is a portable phone charger. If you plan on recording video and taking photos, your phone’s battery may die down quickly, and a phone charger can ensure you can keep capturing the memories all night.

Earplugs are a good idea if you’re sensitive to loud noise. If you’re bringing kids along, they are a must. They ensure you can enjoy the music while protecting your ears.

Bring along a cardigan or jacket. Layering is a good idea for a concert during the summer. Although it may be hot in the stadium, you might be chilly on the way home from the show.

You can’t go wrong bringing along hand sanitizer and a travel pack of tissues. Even if you can get through “All Too Well” without tearing up, you may cry at the sheer excitement of the experience. It can be intense in the best way.

If you have tickets that are far back, bring along binoculars to see close-up details.

What To Avoid At The Eras Tour

Don’t come to the stadium with a big bag. If you haven’t attended stadium concerts before, you may not know that you need to carry a clear bag if you want to bring a purse. It also has to fit within the measurements allowed in the stadium, so you can’t just buy a clear backpack and expect to get in the show. Check with your show’s venue to make sure you follow their rules for what you can bring.

How To Get Taylor Swift Tickets In 2024

Tickets have already gone on sale for the rest of the currently confirmed dates of The Eras Tour for 2024. However, you can get secondhand tickets from resellers. It’s usually not a good idea to buy from individuals in Facebook groups offering to sell tickets. That’s hard to verify, and many are scammed that way. Instead, check with the individual venue to see how their resell process works. It varies throughout Europe depending on the country and the individual stadium.
