The first noted donation at the Tirupati Balaji temple India was made in 966 CE by Samavai, queen of the Pallava dynasty. She donated numerous jewels and two parcels of lands to be used as the revenue generating resources for the celebration of festivals. However, the temple became rich during the Vijayanagara Realm. The roof of the Ananda Nilayam was gilded because of the offerings presented by the Krishnadevaraya in the form of jewels and gold.

Under the rule of East India Company in the 19 th -century, the Balaji Temple was leased for auction to a tenant. Dhruva Beram or Moolavirat – Lord Venkateswara is the presiding deity of the Tirupati Balaji temple. Regarded as the major source of energy, he is also known as Dhruva Beram.

Bhoga Srinivasa or Kautuka Beram – A small one-foot silver idol which delights in all the Bhoga (worldly pleasures) which the devotees wish to offer to the God which is not possible with Moolavirat.

Ugra Srinivasa or Snapana Beram – This deity portrays the fearsome feature of the lord. Ugra Srinivasa usually remains inside the temple. But the idol comes out on Kaishika Dwadasi every year, before the sunrise.

Malayappa swami or Utsava Beram — Utsava Beram is the idol of Sri Venkateswara which is used in processions through the city for time to time. Alternatively known as Malayappa, it is always accompanied by the berams of Bhudevi and Sridevi, the two spouses of God.

Koluvu Srinivasa or Bali Beram — Made up of an alloy of five metals, this Pancha-loha idol look likes the main deity. It is chief in charge of all the rituals and activities in the Tirupati Balaji temple India.

The legend associated with the Temple

According to a legend, Goddess Lakshmi felt insulted by Brigu Rishi who kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest. After this, she had a fight with God and left her heavenly abode, the Vaikunta. Due to this she landed on Earth and settled here. In search of his beloved, Lord Vishnu also came to earth and was named as Srinivasa. After all his efforts went in vain, he decided to dwell at Tirumala hills and continue his search. Meanwhile, he met the beautiful daughter of the King of the seven hills in Tirumala, Padmavati. Upon falling in love, they decided to settle into wedlock.

A huge price was demanded by the king. Thus, Lord Vishnu took a loan of one crore and 11.4 million gold coins from Kubera. He agreed but imposed a condition that Vishnu can’t go back to Vaikuntha without paying off the debt. To this, God Vishnu agreed and married Padmavathi. Knowing about the marriage, Lakshmi came to question him. But he soon transformed into an idol upon confronting the Goddess.

Since then, Lord Vishnu is staying at Tirupati Balaji temple until the debts are paid. Brahma and Shiva, the Hindu Gods, explained Lakshmi that it was the Lord’s desire to be here to help human beings from everlasting troubles of Kalyug.

Goddess Lakshmi and Padamavathi also decided to stay with him here. Thus, devotees offer numerous precious things and a huge amount of money in the donation, to help their lord to pay off the debts.

What to see inside Tirupati Balaji Temple?

Tirupati Balaji temple depicts the Indian legacy. It has a special position from a spiritual perspective and thus various tourists visit here. There are numerous things to see inside the temple. Center of attraction being the main idol of the Lord Sri Venkateswara.

Prakarams – the three enclosures of the shrine. The outmost enclosure consist of the ‘Dhvajastambha’ (banner post) and the other enclosures contain many sculptures including statues of Todarmal and King Krishnadevraya.

Brahmotsavam – the annual festival celebrated for nine days in September with great pomp and show. Processions are carried out throughout the city. The Utsava Beram is used for the same and is accompanied by the idols of Bhudevi and Sridevi.

Daily Rituals – Some of the sevas like Thomala Seva and Suprabhata Seva etc. take place in the Tirupati temple daily.
Weekly Rituals – Various Weekly sevas are held in the temple from Monday to Friday. However, there are no sevas on weekends.
Periodical Rituals – It includes Aaniwara Asthanam, Jyesthabhishekam, Koil Alwar Tirumanjanam and Pavithrotsavam.

Puja in Tirupati Balaji Temple

The ancient scriptures suggest worshiping Vishnu six times daily. Out of the six, worshiping at least once is mandatory.

Prathyusham puja — it takes place before sunrise
Prathakala puja — Prathakala puja commences after sunrise and ends before noon
Madhyahna puja — Worship is done in the afternoon
Aparahana puja — this puja begins with the descending sun
SandhyaKala puja — sunset marks the starting and completion of the pooja
Nisi puja — the last Pooja begins after the horizon is completely dark

Of the given six, only three pujas are performed in the Tirupati temple every day. It includes UshaKala puja, Madhyahna puja and Nisi puja.

Hair tonsuring.

Many people including ladies shave their heads and donate hair as an offering to the Lord. It is known as ‘Mokku’. More than a ton of hair is collected daily. These are then auctioned and generate an income for the temple.

Usually performed with newborns, it is another form of donation. The baby or the person is made to sit on one side of the weighing scale and another part is filled with gold coins, tulsi leaves, sugar, jaggery etc. Once both the pans are balanced, the things on the other pan are donated to the Tirupati Balaji temple India by the person.

Tirupati Darshan

In order to provide quick and hassle-free Tirupati darshan to the devotees, the special entry darshan was introduced. Also known as the Seeghra Darshanam, it is a boon for the pilgrims having some time restrictions. The special Tirupati darshan booking is open round the clock.

Furthermore, the pilgrims can book tickets for Tirumala darshan 3 hours prior to darshan slot. However, this is subjected to the availability of quota. Also, they make the eHundi offerings while booking tickets.

However, for advance booking of the Tirupati Balaji darshan via special entry, devotees can head to e-Darshan counters or Indian Post Offices. They can also do the same by browsing the official website of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.

About Tirupati

Timurala Venkateswara Temple, or simply known as Tirupati, is the most famous pilgrimage destination of South India , and the most popular one. It is located in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh , about 750KM southwest of Vishakhapatnam, and is also home to other historic and ancient temples. Hence, the town is also referred to as the Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The temple, the highlight of the Tirupati map, is perched on and is surrounded by the Tirumala Hills, which are a part of the Sheshachalam Hills Range. They are also called the Tirupati hills. The hills rise to about 2799ft. above sea level, offering great views of the surrounding landscape of forests and waterfalls.

The hills are distinguished by seven peaks, which are mythological representations of the seven heads of Adisesha . The Tirupati temple sits on the 7 th peak – Venkatadri , adjacent to the Swami Pushkarini Lake. Hence it is also called the Temple of the Seven Hills . The entire town, including the temple, covers an area of 26.75 km2 and has a population of 287,035.

The name Tirupati is derived from its Dravidian origin , which translates to “ sacred abode ”.

It is believed that Venkateswara, an avatar of Vishn u appeared on what is presently the temple site, to save mankind from the sufferings of the Kali Yuga. Most ruling dynasties like the Pallavas, Cholas, and the Vijayanagar Kings were devotees of this temple. The first official administration of the temple was set up by Maratha general, Raghoji I Bhosle.

Then during the colonial rule, the British East India Company oversaw the management and handed it to the Mahants of Hathiramji Muth . It was only in 1933, under the TTD Act, the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams trust was formed to manage and conduct all activities in Tirupathi and other temples in Tirumala.

One of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India, Tirupati Temple is frequented by nearly 100,000 people daily , who come here for the sole purpose of Tirupati darshan. On special occasions and festival, the number goes up to 500,00 0, making it the most-visited holy place in the world.

It is also considered to be the richest Hindu temple in the world , with respect to the donations it receives and the wealth accumulated thereof. The reason behind such endowments is associated with a legend in the Puranas.

It is said that Ventakeswara loaned about 11.4 million gold coins from Kuber for his marriage to Padmavathi. With that money, he hired Viswakarma, the divine architect to create the majestic abode. In remembrance, devotees donate money, gold, and other material endowments to the temple, so Venkateshwara can pay back Kuber. It is said that the donations to Tirupati temple go as high as 22.5 million INR per day .

Another interesting aspect of Tirupati is its fundamental belief in equality and prohibits any sacrificial offerings , unlike many other Hindu temples or as in other sects of Hinduism.

Temple Architecture

The temple structure is a work of architectural wonder. The stone carvings on the facades, interiors and the towers, reflect the finesse and skillfulness of ancient Dravidian architecture and is awe-inspiring. It is constructed in classic Dravidian architectural style and is said to have taken a long period of time to build, starting from 300AM. The temple premise consists of two queue complexes to manage pilgrims, the Tarigonda Vengamamba Annaprasadam complex for free meals for visitors, hair tonsure buildings, and a number of pilgrim lodging sites.

Tirupati is served by three railway stations – Renigunta, Tirupati Main and Anantarajupet. There are several express and superfast trains from all major cities and towns in India to these stations.

Tirupati is well-connected to major cities in South India by NH 71. The distance between Tirupati to Bangalore and Chennai is less than 250 Km, which can easily be covered by road. There are also state-run and private buses from Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and other cities in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. You can also book a cab from any of the major cities like Hyderabad to Tirupati.

The pilgrim town is served by Tirupati Internationa Aiport in Renigunta, about 40KM from the temple site. There are regular flights from other major cities and towns in India.

Since the town sits in the middle of the Deccan Plateau, the weather is like that of a landlocked region. Summers are hot and humid, followed by a wet and misty rainy season, and cool pleasant winter. India is a land of culture, where an amalgam of various traditions from different religions can be seen. The country houses various temples, mosques, churches, and gurudwaras, where people pay their respects and pray to the Almighty, irrespective of caste or creed. Govindaraja Swamy Temple

Located near the railway station in Tirupati, the Govindaraja Swamy Temple has a beautiful and prominent Gaali Gopuram that is visible quite from a distance. Along with the idol of Swamy Govindaraja, the temple complex has idols of other deities, who are worshipped by the devotees. During May-June, the temple celebrates Brahmotsavam and devotees and pilgrims from all over India visit the Govindaraja Swamy temple to participate in the celebrations.

Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple

Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and his wife, Sita Maata. Lord Rama is highly revered as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple was built in honour of the divine couple’s return from Sri Lanka. It is believed that Lord Rama and Sita Maata stayed inside the temple premises for a few days, making the place even more sacred for their devotees.

Sri Kalyana Venkateshwaraswami Temple

Believed to be the place where the mythological wedding of Lord Venkateshwara and Devi Padamavathi took place, this temple is of high significance to the pilgrims. The temple is located in Narayanavanam and every pilgrim visiting Tirupati Balaji makes a stop here.

It is reported that the temple welcomes around 50,000 pilgrims every day, which is the highest number of devotees visiting a temple in India. The entry for Balaji darshan at Tirupati is through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. This complex is a series of interconnected halls that lead the pathway to the main temple. The halls of the complex are extremely clean and hygienic, with various facilities that make the pilgrims feel comfortable during their Tirupati Balaji darshan.

City Shopping in Tirupati

It may not be the ideal shopping destination but Tirupati does have places where you can shop for some unique, one-of-its-kind beautiful things. Starting with something that devotees will like – you can find various shops and stalls right outside the Tirupati Balaji temple where you can find beautifully crafted figurines of the deity, CDs filled with religious shlokas and songs, holy prasadams and laddoos that you can relish on.

Apart from this, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (the temple trust that enables online booking for Tirupati Balaji darshan) also publishes various religious books and periodicals that pilgrims can get their hands on. Audio and video cassettes/CDs of Vedas, Sankirtans, and Pravachanams are also released by the Devasthanam. If you plan on taking some souvenir back to your hometown, photo frames, jewellery, and idols made of brass and copper are also available with them.

Coming to the city shopping, Tirupati is famous for housing some of the most skilled craftsmen, who create marvellous paintings and handicrafts for your purchase. You can find various wood-carved toys, pottery items, Kalamkari fabric, and other such artworks that allures you to buy them for yourself and your loved ones.

The Tanjore Style Painting

One of the most famous and proud assets of Tirupati are the traditional Tanjore style gold leaf painting. Also known as the Thanjavur style of painting, it is practised at Mandanapalli, a town near Tirupati and is an authentic form of South Indian art that traces back to 1600 AD. The Tanjore style paintings are vibrant in colour with glittering gold foil, glass beads, and precious gems carved on them. The paintings are done on wooden planks, which are known as Palagai Padam and art-lovers, non-art-lovers, and everyone who sees the gorgeousness of the paintings fall in love with them.

Reaching Tirupati Balaji Temple

The location of Tirupati Balaji temple is accessible by local taxi, autorickshaw, and buses. However, to reach Tirupati, you can opt for travel by air, train, or by road. If you travelling from states like Delhi, Assam, and so on by air – the nearest domestic airport to Tirupati is Reniguta and the nearest international airport is Chennai. From the airport, you can hire a local taxi or cab to reach the actual location of Tirupati Balaji Temple.

Visitors would marvel at the architectural splendour of the sacred complex. Initially the sacred complex had Lord Parathasarthy as the principal deity. When the Mughals invaded South India, the idol of Govindaraja Swamy of the ancient temple in Chidambaram was brought to Tirupati. It was later taken back to temple at Chidambaram.

Saint Ramanujacharya was asked in his dreams to restore the idol of Lord Govindaraja Swamy in the temple. When he proceeded to the temple, he found that the idol was already there. Since then Lord Govindaraja Swamy is the presiding deity of the sacred temple.

World’s Richest Temple Tirumala Tirupati Achieved A Record FD Of Rs 1161 Crore In FY 23-24; Its Cash Reserve Is…

Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD), the governing body of the richest Hindu shrine in the world, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, has reigned into 2024, breaking its previous records. For FY 23–24, the temple’s trust has made the highest fixed deposit ever made at Rs 1,161 crore. The previous record for fixed deposits by the temple was Rs 1,153.26 crore for FY 2015-16.

Barring the COVID lockdown in 2021 and 2022, the temple has made over Rs 500 crore annually. With the current fixed deposit, the temple’s cumulative fixed deposit stands at a whopping Rs 13,287.62 crore! The temple also received a staggering 1,031 kilogram of gold offerings for the fiscal year.

The gold offering alone is worth around Rs 773 crores. The total gold reserve of the temple now stands at 11,329.67 kg, which is worth Rs 8,400 crore. For the current fiscal year, the temple also received Rs 5,529.51 crore from devotees until March 31, 2023. Per a TTD official, the monthly donation in hundi by devotees consistently exceeds Rs 100 crore. The total investments of the trust, including donations and fixed deposits, stand at a staggering Rs 18,817.13 crore.
