OCBC 90°N Card Review (2020)

Andrew

This is our review of the OCBC 90°N card issued in Singapore. It forms part of our series of credit card reviews, which are all summarised on our dedicated Credit Cards page .

Dollar amounts refer to SGD, and ‘miles’ refer to KrisFlyer miles, except where stated. This review was updated on 25th May 2021 .

  Mainly Miles Says

After much promise when first launched, OCBC hasn’t even tried to keep up with the competition with its 90°N card, maintaining only one frequent flyer transfer partner, no airport lounge access and imposing a new annoying UOB-esque $5 rounding policy for miles earning.

On the plus side it does offer unlimited fee-free transfers to KrisFlyer and benefits from 1,000-mile transfer blocks into the programme. Overall though, this one falls short of other cards in the same category.

  Eligibility

  • Minimum Age:  21
  • Minimum Income (Singaporean / PR):  $30,000/yr
  • Minimum Income (Non-Singaporean):  $45,000/yr

The OCBC 90°N card comes in at the entry-level $30,000 per year income requirement for Singapore citizens and permanent residents, making it widely accessible.

  Annual Fees & Interest Rates

  • Annual Fee (principal): $192.60 (first year free)
  • Annual Fee (supplementary): $96.30 (first year free)
  • Fee waiver: On request

The annual fee for the OCBC 90°N card is $192.60 , though it is waived for the first year. Fee waiver at annual renewal is on request.

If you do have to pay the annual fee on renewal however, you’ll also receive a 10,000 miles bonus on (i.e. paying 1.93 cents per mile).

Supplementary cards are available at an additional annual fee of $96.30 , though again this is waived in year one.

We value KrisFlyer miles at 1.9 cents each (our upper limit to buy), so we would try to avoid paying the annual fee where possible, even with 10,000 miles thrown in.

Other fees and interest rates for the OCBC 90°N card include:

  • Interest-free period: 23 days
  • Minimum payment: 3% (or $50, whichever greater)
  • Late payment fee: $100
  • Cash advance fee: 8% (min. $15)

  Sign-up bonus

OCBC is currently offering up to S$150 cashback sign-up bonus for the 90°N card, valid for successful applications between 25th May 2021 and 30th June 2021.

You’ll need to be among the first to not only obtain the card but also to meet a S$1,000 minimum spend in the first month.

Full details of this promotion are available at our dedicated article .

  Renewal bonus

As mentioned above, there’s a renewal bonus of 10,000 miles for payment of the $192.60 annual fee, which would commence at the start of the second card membership year. Since the fee is waived for the first year, these miles are not awarded in year 1.

That’s the equivalent of ‘buying’ the miles for 1.93 cents each at annual renewal, slightly above our upper limit to buy of 1.9 cents per mile, so you may prefer to try and have the fee waived and forgo these additional miles, assuming you are keeping the card in year 2.

  Regular earn rates

This card earns miles at the following rates:

  • 1.2 miles per $1 spent locally (i.e. transacted in SGD), and
  • 2.1 miles per $1 spent overseas (i.e. transacted in foreign currency)

These effectively match the Citi PremierMiles and DBS Altitude rates, both of which bear some similarity to this card, with the exception of the overseas earn rate which comes in 5% better at 2.1 miles per $1 compared with 2 miles per $1.

While that’s a nice edge over those cards, you’ll achieve higher earn rates with some others like the UOB PRVI Miles (1.4 mpd locally, 2.4 mpd overseas).

Additionally, you’ll get 1 mile per $1 spent on AXS Pay+Earn transactions using this card, however with a 2.5% admin fee charged this is equivalent to ‘buying’ miles at 2.5 cents each, not a good proposition at all.

  Bonus earn rates

You may recall the heady days of 4 miles per dollar on unlimited overseas spend, selected flight, hotel and entertainment bookings, plus up to 8 miles per dollar on some hotel sites like Expedia, when this card was first launched in August 2019.

Alas those days are long gone, with little such generosity extended beyond the promotion end date of 29th February 2020.

what is travel$ ocbc

Recently however OCBC has launched an offer with Agoda for up to 7 miles per dollar for hotel bookings in foreign currency and 6 miles per dollar for SGD bookings.

This is valid for bookings made before 31st July 2021, for stays through to 31st December 2021, via the following dedicated link:

  www.agoda.com/90N

what is travel$ ocbc

Note that this promo is for prepaid bookings through Agoda, so be careful to shop around for the best price first. Initially you’ll earn at the regular 1.2 mpd (SGD) / 2.1 mpd (FCY) rates, with the bonus element awarded within two calendar months of your completed stay.

Full terms and conditions are available here .

  Eligible transactions

OCBC awards miles (or Travel$ as it calls them with this card) on all retail transactions, with the exception of the following:

  • All card fees and charges, card annual fees, membership fees, renewal fees, balance transfer and charges incurred for any balance transfer facility, cash-on-instalment facility and charges incurred for any cash-on-instalment facility.
  • Instalment payment plan, extended payment plan, income tax payment, interest, late payment charges, GST, cash advances, bill payments made via internet banking, and other fees and charges.
  • Payment of funds to prepaid accounts and merchants who are categorised as “payment service providers”, which include (without limitation) EZ-Link, NETS FlashPay, eNETS, SAM, Transit Link and AXS.

There are also some merchant-specific excluded MCC codes, including payments to charitable organisations and for utilities , insurance and education , plus payments to Singapore public hospitals . Grab top-ups are also excluded.

For a full up to date list of exclusions, see the card terms and conditions .

What about CardUp and ipaymy?

At the time of writing the OCBC 90°N card accrues miles normally at the local earn rate for both CardUp and ipaymy transactions, allowing you to accumulate miles on bill payments, monthly rental and income tax, among other invoices.

what is travel$ ocbc

Remember to check the cost per mile based on the prevailing fee for your transaction type to make sure you’re ‘buying’ miles at a sensible rate when using card payment providers.

  Are KrisFlyer miles credited directly?

No, in fact rather than being credited miles directly you’ll accrue ‘Travel$’ for your regular spending on this card. These transfer to KrisFlyer miles at a 1:1 ratio, so for $10,000 of local spending, you’ll net 12,000 Travel$, which can be converted to 12,000 KrisFlyer miles.

Which loyalty schemes can I transfer into?

Singapore Airlines  KrisFlyer  is the sole frequent flyer program for OCBC redemptions. With the obvious exception of the KrisFlyer co-brand credit cards, that makes OCBC the only bank in Singapore not offering an alternative miles transfer partner, such as Asia Miles or Emirates Skywards (even UOB supports Asia Miles transfers!).

That’s a big drawback of the OCBC cards in our opinion, as we often top up our balances in these other programmes to give us oneworld and other partner redemption opportunities.

Be sure to bookmark our continually updated list of which banks transfer where for the latest range of options.

For the best range of transfer partners, look towards Citi, American Express or Standard Chartered cards.

what is travel$ ocbc

↥  Is there a minimum transfer amount?

The minimum volume of miles you can transfer into KrisFlyer is  1,000 , with 1,000-mile blocks thereafter.

Many cards, including some other OCBC products, restrict you to a 10,000-mile minimum transfer level and 10,000-mile blocks after that, meaning it’s often better to wait until the next ‘block’ is reached before transferring.

No big issues with that here – you can round off to the nearest 1,000 which is a very nice perk.

  When do Travel$ credit?

OCBC Travel$ should reflect in your account once the transaction posts, which takes anywhere between one and three days.

You won’t have to wait until your monthly statement for the points to be added, so if you’re making a purchase to achieve a short-term top-up they should be available to you within a few days.

For example, a $1,000 local purchase on a Monday should see 1,200 Travel$ added to your rewards account by Thursday the same week, which you can then transfer to KrisFlyer subject to the transfer blocks outlined above.

  Do Travel$ expire?

No, and that’s great because as you will probably know once transferred into KrisFlyer your miles will then only last for three years. That means no need to keep an eye on the expiration date at the OCBC side, just transfer to KrisFlyer when you need to.

Non expiry of Travel$ is also an added benefit of the 1,000 mile redemption blocks. When you just fall short of a redemption (e.g. 91,200 miles but you need 92,000 to redeem) you don’t need to waste a whole 10,000 miles transfer block like with other cards.

Just transfer 1,000 miles in this example. That way you can keep more miles at the OCBC side, where they are immune from expiry.

  Travel$ don’t pool

Unfortunately the Travel$ currency is unique to the OCBC 90°N card, so you can’t pool them with OCBC$ or Voyage Miles accrued on the Titanium Rewards or Voyage cards.

As OCBC state in their terms and conditions “The Travel$ cannot be transferred, assigned or carried over to any other card issued by OCBC Bank” .

  Three OCBC rewards ‘currencies’

It’s probably a good time to mention that OCBC has three rewards ‘currencies’ across its miles earning credit cards, none of which combine with one another and all of which work slightly differently.

With this card you’ll earn Travel$, which benefit from 1:1 transfers into KrisFlyer in 1,000-mile denominations, with no transfer cost. They also never expire.

Unfortunately as mentioned above if you hold other OCBC credit cards, you’ll have separate pools of non-combinable points.

What is the transfer cost to KrisFlyer miles?

Here’s another great benefit of the OCBC 90°N card, like the bank’s Voyage card transfer to KrisFlyer miles  are free . That’s quite unlike many other cards in Singapore, which typically charge around $25-30 each time you transfer your points to KrisFlyer miles.

It means there’s no need to wait around to accumulate a decent level of Travel$ before transferring to KrisFlyer to ‘dilute’ the fee to a reasonable level per mile, you can do so as soon as you’ve reached one of the transfer thresholds if you wish.

Just bear in mind as we stated above, once the miles are transferred into KrisFlyer you’ve got three years to use them, so unless you have an urgent need then it’s probably better to keep them as Travel$ for as long as possible.

How long do miles take to credit to KrisFlyer?

The official line is “approximately 21 working days”. That’s probably  the worst transfer time  between credit card reward points and KrisFlyer miles in the whole of Singapore.

The good news is – it doesn’t actually take that long at all. A few data points show that transfers from Travel$ (or OCBC$ if you hold the Titanium Rewards card / Voyage Miles if you hold the Voyage card), take just 24 hours.

Our most recent transfer from OCBC$ to KrisFlyer met the 24-hour turnaround (transfer requested 12.30pm on a Wednesday, credited to KrisFlyer by 11.30am on the Thursday).

That’s actually one of the faster points to miles transfer times in Singapore.

That means OCBC conversions even make it into our Instant and quick ways to transfer miles to KrisFlyer rundown (also featuring Amex and Citi, for the sake of completeness).

  Points rounding

Since June 2020 a big drawback of OCBC credit cards is that reward points are awarded for every $5 block of spending charged to your card. Any amount charged is rounded down to the next $5 denomination.

That means unless your spend hits a $5 denomination exactly – the bank always wins .

“As an illustration, a customer who spends an amount between S$10 and S$14.99 in a single transaction can earn 12 Travel$. However, a customer who spends S$4.90 in a single transaction, or who spends S$2.50 in one transaction and S$2.50 in another transaction, will not be awarded any Travel$.” OCBC

When you are charging smaller amounts, it begins to have a big impact on the effective miles per dollar rate you are actually earning for the transaction.

One cent can make all the difference here, and to truly optimise the maximum number of Travel$ earned, you should plan your spending in $5 blocks especially at the lower transaction levels (e.g. $5 / $10 / $15).

Try to avoid falling just below a $5 block if possible, or only exceed a $5 block by a small amount.

The impact becomes less important with higher amounts, for example let’s say you make a local transaction with your OCBC 90°N card as follows:

  • $249.99 – 294 Travel$ awarded (294 miles / 1.18 mpd )
  • $250.00 – 300 Travel$ awarded (300 miles / 1.2 mpd )

As you can see falling 1 cent short of a $5 block size in this case isn’t significantly affecting your miles per dollar rate in the same way that a $9.99 vs. $10.00 spend is.

↥ Minimum spend to earn points

Since any amount in Singapore dollars is first rounded down to the next $5 denomination,  $5.00  is the minimum transaction amount to earn any reward points using the OCBC 90°N card.

Smaller transactions, including those converted from foreign currency into SGD which are subsequently charged to your card account at less than $5, will not earn  any  points.

For sub-$5 transactions, consider the DBS Altitude card (see  our review ) with a $1.67 minimum spend to earn miles, or the Citi PremierMiles card (see  our review ) with a $1 minimum spend.

  FCY fee / cpm overseas

OCBC used to charge a 3% fee for credit card transactions in foreign currency, however this was increased to 3.25% in December 2019.

That makes it a fairly uncompetitive card to use for overseas purchases, with a cost per mile of 1.63 cents. There are several better cards to focus your FCY spending on, including the UOB PRVI Miles, HSBC Visa Infinite and DBS Altitude Amex options.

Cost per mile on overseas credit card transactions by card (Best to worst, August 2020)

* 3 mpd earn rate for the SCVI card is subject to a minimum spend of $2,000 (any currency) in the same statement cycle. ** Step up earn rate for HSBC VI is only applicable from year 2 of card membership onwards, provided you spent at least $50,000 in the previous year.

Cost per mile also accounts for an additional 0.3% ‘spread’ over money changer currency rates, though this doesn’t apply to all banks and all foreign currencies, so is a worst-case scenario.

However as you can see the OCBC 90°N card does come in slightly cheaper on a cost per mile basis than the Citi PremierMiles card and the DBS Altitude Visa.

What else can Travel$ be used for?

The OCBC 90°N Mastercard also offers a cashback alternative, allowing you to redeem Travel$ for 1.2% cashback. That’s equivalent to 1.44% (1.2 x 1.2) cashback on local spend and 2.52% (2.1 x 1.2) cashback on overseas spend at the standard earn rates.

These are poor rates relative to the value of KrisFlyer miles earned , and unlikely to be of much interest to our readers (unless you value KrisFlyer miles at less than 1.2 cents each, in which case there are better cashback cards on the market anyway).

what is travel$ ocbc

It’s also possible to trade your Travel$ through OCBC’s STACK programme into other ‘currencies’, however the conversion ratios are terrible and with 1,000-mile transfer blocks into KrisFlyer there should be no need even to spend your orphan points this way. In that case, just top-up to the next 1,000 Travel$ block.

  Lounge access

One disappointing aspect of the OCBC 90°N card is the lack of complimentary airport lounge access, with competitors like the DBS Altitude and Citi PremierMiles cards both offering Priority Pass membership including 2 free visits per year.

what is travel$ ocbc

The card does entitle you however to a LoungeKey by Mastercard  membership allowing access to over 800 worldwide airport lounges for US$27 per visit (note – no free visit allowance, this is the basic membership).

  Other benefits

OCBC 90°N cardholders can take advantage of some 1-for-1 dining offers and typically 20% discounts with selected retailers.

what is travel$ ocbc

These offers tend to rotate every few months but it’s worth checking the latest list on the product landing page in case there are any of use to you.

Our summary

When this card was first launched it featured an unbeatable 4 miles per dollar for overseas spend, plus up to 8 miles per dollar on a range of travel and hotel transactions.

That was never going to last of course, however to entice people to keep the card into year two OCBC probably had to do a bit more than throw in an Agoda offer.

Unfortunately this card now sits alongside competitors like the Citi PremierMiles and DBS Altitude products with more negatives than positives in our opinion, not least since $5 miles earning blocks were introduced in June 2020.

what is travel$ ocbc

With no complimentary lounge access, only one frequent flyer transfer partner and the recent miles rounding issue to contend with for smaller transactions, we would simply favour other cards in this category.

A 5% ‘bonus’ on the FCY earn rate is not enough to swing it, especially when you could consider the UOB PRVI Miles cards as an alternative, earning 2.4 mpd for such transactions.

On the plus side if you do take the plunge with this card, unlimited fee-free transfers to KrisFlyer in 1,000-mile blocks is the big selling point for flexibility.

I think there is another plus point is that as long is FCY spend it will be award as 2.1 miles even the payment gateway is in Singapore. So is a card that i have in doubts about the payment gateway i will use this card for the purchase.

Good point David, will add that in!

Travel$ aren’t earned for many short term overseas holiday rentals. The MCC is excluded. I used this card for several rentals and got 0 travel$ but large FCY fees. Never again – now I only use my OCBC cards for very specific 4mpd purchases that they can’t exclude.

OCBC should be seen as ‘financial conglomerate’ unlike local banking peers, says chairman

The lender – which has two banking licences, insurance arm Great Eastern and an asset manager – is the sum of its parts in terms of share price and how it operates, notes Andrew Lee

OCBC should be seen as a financial conglomerate of many parts, setting it apart from the other two local banks in Singapore, said its chairman Andrew Lee.

Speaking at the lender’s annual general meeting on Tuesday (Apr 30), Lee said that OCBC is “not just a pure bank” – it comprises two banking licences, including one for its private banking arm Bank of Singapore, insurance arm Great Eastern and an asset manager.

“What we are, in terms of the share price and in terms of how we operate, is the sum of the parts,” Lee added.

OCBC’s Indonesia subsidiary completes acquisition of PT Bank Commonwealth

what is travel$ ocbc

Elisa Valenta

JAKARTA - The Indonesian unit of OCBC has completed the acquisition of PT Bank Commonwealth (PTBC) in a deal worth 2.2 trillion rupiah (S$191 million).

PTBC is the Indonesian banking subsidiary of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), the largest bank in Australia.

In a media release on May 2, OCBC said the acquisition was complete on May 1. OCBC Indonesia now owns 100 per cent of PTBC’s shares, making PTBC a wholly owned subsidiary of PT Bank OCBC NISP (OCBC Indonesia). The acquisition brings more than 1.2 million PTBC customers to OCBC Indonesia.

OCBC said the integration process will be finalised by the fourth quarter of 2024. Until then, PTBC will continue to serve customers as usual through its banking channels and products, including banking transactions at PTBC branches and through its digital channels.

OCBC Group chief executive officer Helen Wong said the acquisition reinforces the Singapore bank’s robust presence in Indonesia.

“(This acquisition) signals our commitment to accelerating growth in the country, and to support our customers as they seek growth across multiple markets,” she said.

“Rising Asean-Greater China flows is a focal point of Asia’s growth story and a big opportunity for us. Chinese companies, for instance, are looking to expand into Indonesia to tap its large young population and abundance of natural resources.”

Ms Wong added that continuously strengthening the network across South-east Asia and Greater China, and a presence in other global financial centres is “imperative” to OCBC’s strategy.

In a separate statement, OCBC Indonesia president-director Parwati Surjaudaja described the acquisition as a significant milestone, given that PTBC has an attractive and complementary customer base in consumer banking and SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) segments in South-east Asia’s largest economy.

“We plan to leverage the combined capabilities of both entities to broaden OCBC in Indonesia’s products and services, and capture financial services growth opportunities in Indonesia,” she said.

Indonesia is one of OCBC’s key markets alongside Singapore, Malaysia and Greater China.

In 2004, OCBC became the first Singaporean bank to procure a banking stake within the nation by acquiring a 22.5 percent stake in PT Bank NISP, a medium-sized local bank that serves SMEs. This stake progressively expanded over the years to the current level of 85 per cent. THE BUSINESS TIMES

Digital Wallets Provide Local Touch to Connected Travel Experiences

Digital Wallets Provide Local Touch to Connected Travel

Alipay+  unveiled a  cross-border payments  initiative  in a move  to boost Hong  Kong’s  tourism and commerce sector.

The platform facilitates transactions for users of 14 overseas mobile wallets and bank apps from nine countries and regions.

Among the eWallets and bank apps newly introduced to the  city’s  landscape are  Hipay  from Mongolia,  Malaysia’s   MyPB by Public Bank Berhad  and  Touch  ’ n Go eWallet ,  MPay  from Macau SAR,  Changi Pay  and  OCBC Digital  from Singapore and  Tinaba  from Italy. This expansion ensures that these platforms, similar to Alipay in mainland China, are now accepted by over 90% of local merchants in Hong Kong.

By enabling users to conduct transactions through their preferred home apps,  this integration aims to streamline payment processes, enhance operational efficiency, and elevate service standards in Hong  Kong’s  retail landscape.

Additionally,  the integration of  multiple international payment platforms and apps into the  city’s  digital wallet ecosystem translates into broader customer reach and increased revenue opportunities for merchants, enabling businesses in Hong Kong to cater to the needs and payment preferences of overseas visitors.

“W hen we pay like locals, we can travel and experience the culture like locals, ”  Venetia Lee , CEO of AlipayHK and Greater China General Manager of Ant International, said in a Friday (April 26)  press release .  “ … This allows hassle-free payments, promotes the development of Hong  Kong’s  tourism industry, and helps local merchants enhance the effectiveness of their promotional activities through digital technology .”

In a similar vein , eSIM company  eSIM Go  has expanded its mobile data service by integrating  Western  Union ’s   digital wallets , providing coverage in over 150 countries via its  “ Powered by Breeze ”  offering.

The integration enables Western Union digital wallet customers in select European countries, including Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania, to access the solution from their digital banking apps, facilitating transactions in their preferred language and currency.

“E quipping digital wallet customers with global connectivity possibilities serves the dual purpose of traveling with ease and optimizing access to digital banking services from anywhere, ”  the company said in a March 26  news release .  “ Western Union eSIMs give customers hassle-free access to wallet-friendly data roaming, either to use on their next foreign trip or to effortlessly send to family and friends living abroad .”

These developments  are occurring  within the broader landscape of increased adoption of digital wallets such as  Apple Pay ,  Google Wallet  and  PayPal .  Serving as  secure repositories for credit and debit card information , digital wallets provide consumers with a convenient and contactless payment method, freeing them from  the necessity of  carrying physical cards during travel or shopping errands.  Moreover, they enhance online shopping experiences by eliminating the need to input sensitive card data into websites and apps.

Given these advantages, digital wallets have garnered widespread popularity among consumers, as highlighted in PYMNTS  Intelligence’s  report,  “ Tracking the Digital Payments Takeover: Can New Use Cases Drive Consumer Use of Digital Wallets? ”  The trend  is particularly pronounced  among  Generation Z  consumers, with nearly 80% regularly using digital wallets.

Looking ahead , the evolution of digital wallets  is set   to further revolutionize   connected travel experiences  — a shift that resonates strongly with Gen Z travelers. As the first generation to grow up in a digital-centric world, Gen Z individuals  are accustomed  to seamless digital experiences and value convenience and efficiency in all aspects of their lives, including travel.

Digital wallets offer a natural extension of their digital lifestyle, providing a streamlined solution for managing transactions on the go, whether  it’s  purchasing tickets for public transportation, dining at local eateries, or shopping for souvenirs on trips.

SINGAPORE: The Bank of Singapore (BOS) has conducted a wide-ranging investigation into the misuse of medical benefits by staff who made claims for ineligible items such as bird's nest, sources have told CNA.

“Hundreds” of employees were involved in the investigation which ultimately led to some people being sacked, according to three OCBC Group employees who spoke to CNA on condition of anonymity on Thursday (Apr 25).

BOS, the private banking arm of OCBC Group, launched an investigation last year into employee medical claims involving one of its company panel clinics, the sources said.

Those involved were found to have submitted claims for bird’s nest, skincare products, supplements and toothbrushes – items that are excluded under the company’s medical benefits.

They were told to pay back the money for these claims.

The “more serious cases” also had disciplinary outcomes that affected people's bonuses. They also did not receive a one-off cost-of-living support of S$1,000 (US$735) for junior staff across OCBC Group, CNA was told.

News of the dismissals and irregularities in staff medical claims at BOS was first reported by financial services careers website eFinancialCareers on Wednesday.

The article by eFinancialCareers said that BOS had sacked up to 40 employees last week after an investigation of past medical claims. A source with knowledge of the matter corroborated that number to CNA and confirmed that the dismissals occurred over two days last week.

CNA was told that OCBC is also conducting its own investigation, and has contacted the bank with separate questions.

In response to CNA’s queries, BOS said staff matters are “confidential”.

“Where wrongdoing is alleged, the matter will be investigated and reviewed according to the bank’s investigative and disciplinary framework ensuring a fair and robust process. Staff involved will be given the time and opportunity to be heard,” the spokesperson said.

“Should any wrongdoing be found after the conclusion of investigation and necessary disciplinary inquiry, the appropriate disciplinary actions will be undertaken.”

“AS SERIOUS AS DEFRAUDING THE BANK”

According to those who spoke to CNA, the matter had been brewing within BOS for some time, with those involved being called to disciplinary hearings which lasted “a few months”.

One employee, who was not involved in the investigation, said staff were told by managers that the incident was “as serious as defrauding the bank” and goes against the company’s key value of integrity.

The claims were made under the company’s medical insurance scheme, which allows employees to claim up to S$10,500 for medical and dental expenses.

The list of claimable items, which CNA has seen, includes outpatient consultation and medication issued by a general practitioner or specialist, non-aesthetic dental services, vaccinations, X-rays and blood tests.

Expenses that are not allowed to be claimed largely cover those that are not medically needed, such as cosmetic surgery, items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, as well as care devices like wheelchairs.

CNA understands that BOS did not require itemised receipts for medical claims below S$200.

It is unclear what triggered the investigations, but sources said BOS had asked a clinic, which they said was on its panel of approved clinics, for its records over the past two years.

CNA understands the clinic to be Drs Thompson & Thomson, which is located in Raffles Place.

In an email dated Nov 10, 2023, seen by CNA, OCBC and BOS staff were informed that human resources would no longer reimburse invoices from Drs Thompson & Thomson dated from that same day.

“The restriction on the reimbursement of claims from Drs Thompson & Thomson applies to all employees and their dependants of OCBC Bank Limited, OCBC Management Services Private Limited, e2Power Private Limited, OCBC Securities Private Limited, OCBC Property Services Private Limited, Bank of Singapore Limited, BOS Trustee Limited and OCBC Overseas Investments Private Limited,” the email stated.

In response to queries, a spokesperson for Drs Thompson & Thomson said it was never on BOS' list of panel clinics.

"Since DTT (Drs Thompson & Thomson) is not on the panel, claims will have to be made independently by patients," said the spokesperson.

The clinic follows "strict protocols" to ensure "full compliance with all applicable regulations by the Ministry of Health", the spokesperson told CNA, adding that "detailed documentation of services rendered are in accordance with established guidelines".

CBA completes sale of PT Bank Commonwealth

The divestment of Commonwealth Bank’s 99% shareholding in its Indonesian banking subsidiary to OCBC Indonesia has been completed.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) today announced that it has completed the sale of its 99% shareholding in its Indonesian banking subsidiary, PT Bank Commonwealth (PTBC), to PT Bank OCBC NISP Tbk (OCBC Indonesia), a subsidiary of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited (OCBC).

The transaction was initially announced in November 2023 and completion follows the provision of regulatory approvals from the Indonesia Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, or OJK) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

OCBC Indonesia, which is the ninth largest bank in the country by total assets and is listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange, assumes ownership over PTBC which has more than 1.2 million customers, with total assets of c.A$1.8bn and net assets of c.A$390m as at 30 June 2023.

The sale of the shareholding in PTBC is consistent with CBA’s strategy to focus on its banking business in Australia and New Zealand. The transaction is expected to be broadly neutral to the Group’s Common Equity Tier 1 ratio.

Review: OCBC 90°N Card

Aaron Wong

With its mega launch bonuses fading into distant memory, the OCBC 90°N Card badly needs a spark- and I don't just mean the built-in LED.

Here’s The MileLion’s review of the OCBC 90°N Card, the card that makes you wish the standard QWERTY keyboard had a dedicated ° key.

OCBC was a relatively late entrant into the miles space, and when the bank finally unveiled a miles card in 2015, it decided to go premium with the OCBC VOYAGE Card. It took a further four years before the mass-market OCBC 90°N Mastercard launched in August 2019, followed by the OCBC 90°N Visa in October 2021.

While both 90°N Cards used to be distinct products with different earn rates and benefits, they were harmonised in early 2023 and are now a single product issued across two networks. And sadly, despite launching with huge sign-up offers (an uncapped 4 mpd on overseas spending, anyone?), they’ve not been able to maintain the same sort of momentum ever since.

Overview: OCBC 90°N Card

Let’s start this review by looking at the key features of the OCBC 90°N Card.

The OCBC 90°N Card is offered on both the Mastercard and Visa network. Historically, there were big differences between the two versions; the Visa had lower general spend rates, but enjoyed a bonus (insofar as 1.5 mpd can be called a bonus) on groceries, online food delivery and shopping. The Mastercard has higher general spend rates, but lacked a bonus category.

That’s no longer the case from early 2023, with the two cards now offering exactly the same value proposition. I suppose the main advantage of the Mastercard would be that it can be paired with Amaze for lower-cost overseas transactions, but apart from that there’s no big reason to choose one over the other.

While initially issued on traditional horizontal cardstock, the 90°N Cards have now transitioned to the new portrait-style design that’s becoming increasingly common (portrait-style design supposedly allows for a smoother user experience, as it mimics how customers typically handle their cards when they tap to pay or dip the card into a chip reader).

And while we’re talking design, it would be amiss not to mention the so-unnecessary-yet-sort-of-cool LED light embedded in the °, that lights up upon making a contactless transaction.

I mean, come on, you have to applaud that on some level.

How much must I earn to qualify for an OCBC 90°N Card?

what is travel$ ocbc

The OCBC 90°N Card has an annual income requirement of S$30,000 p.a.,  the MAS-mandated minimum to hold a credit card in Singapore.

If you earn below this threshold, it may be possible to get a secured version of the card with a S$10,000 fixed deposit. Contact OCBC customer service for further details.

How much is the OCBC 90°N Card’s annual fee?

The OCBC 90°N Card has a S$54 annual fee, which is waived for the first year for both principal and supplementary cards.

Cardholders can opt to “upgrade” their annual fee by paying an extra S$1,080, for which they’ll receive 50,000 miles (awarded as 90°N Miles). This represents a price of 2.27 cents per mile (50,000/(S$54 + S$1,080), which frankly speaking is way too expensive. You can buy miles for less than half that price through bill payment services like CardUp and Citi PayAll, so don’t waste your time here!

Annual fee waivers are possible, and in my experience, fairly easy to obtain even with minimal card spend.

How many miles do I earn?

Sgd/fcy spend.

OCBC 90°N Cardholders earn:

  • 6.5 90°N Miles for every S$5 spent in Singapore Dollars
  • 10.5 90°N Miles for every S$5 spent in foreign currency (FCY)

1 90°N Mile is worth 1 KrisFlyer mile, so that’s an equivalent earn rate of 1.3 mpd for local spend, and 2.1 mpd for FCY spend.

While this is marginally better than most general spending cards at the S$30,000 income level, OCBC’s nasty rounding policy means you might be earning less than you think on smaller transactions (more on that below).

All overseas transactions are subject to a 3.25% fee, so using your OCBC 90°N Mastercard overseas represents buying miles at 1.55 cents each.

Bonus Spend

OCBC 90°N Cardholders can earn up to 7 mpd for Agoda hotel bookings made by 30 November 2023 and stayed by 31 December 2023:

  • 7 90°N Miles per S$1 spent in foreign currency
  • 6 90°N Miles per S$1 spent in Singapore dollars

Bonus 90°N Miles will be credited to your account within two months of departure from the hotel.

Do note that bookings made through bank x OTA tie-ups like this can sometimes be more expensive than bookings made through the OTA site directly. I would strongly urge you to do comparison shopping to make sure you’re not paying over the odds.

When are 90°N Miles credited?

90°N Miles are credited when your transaction posts, which generally takes 1-3 working days.

How are 90°N Miles calculated?

Here’s how you can work out the 90°N Miles earned on your OCBC 90°N Card.

Unfortunately, OCBC has joined UOB in adopting a punitive rounding policy that sees all transactions rounded down to the nearest S$5 before points are awarded. That means a S$14.90 transaction earns the same number of miles as a S$10 transaction, and a S$4.99 transaction earns no miles at all!

You basically need to spend at least S$5 to earn any points at all on the OCBC 90°N Card.

Because of this policy, the OCBC 90°N Card can be outperformed by a competitor card with a lower headline earn rate. Consider the following:

If you’re an Excel geek, here’s the formulas you need to calculate points:

For the full list of formulas that banks use to calculate credit card points, do refer to these articles:

  • General Spending Cards
  • Specialised Spending Cards

What transactions aren’t eligible for 90°N Miles?

A full list of transactions that do not earn 90°N Miles can be found in the T&Cs.

I’ve highlighted a few noteworthy categories below:

  • Charitable Donations
  • Government Services
  • Insurance Premiums
  • Prepaid account top-ups (e.g. GrabPay, YouTrip)
  • Real Estate Agents & Managers
  • SimplyGo (Bus/MRT transactions)

For avoidance of doubt, 90°N Miles will be awarded for CardUp transactions at a rate of 1.3 mpd.

What do I need to know about 90°N Miles?

90°N Miles earned on the OCBC 90°N Card do not expire, so long as the card remains valid.

90°N Miles earned on the Mastercard and Visa versions of the OCBC 90°N Card pool together. However, 90°N Miles cannot be pooled with OCBC$ and VOYAGE Miles.

Truth be told, I really don’t understand why OCBC needs three different rewards currencies; life would be so much easier if they just stuck to one!

Partners and Transfer Fee

For the longest time, OCBC cardholders could only transfer points to KrisFlyer. However, after numerous delays, OCBC has finally added eight new airline and hotel partners to its repertoire.

Unfortunately, the transfer ratios for the eight new partners leave a lot to be desired.

I would at the very least have expected Asia Miles to enjoy the same conversion ratio as KrisFlyer. That’s the way it is for every other bank on the market, and it effectively eliminates Asia Miles as a viable transfer partner. After all, why on earth would you take a 25% haircut on the value of your OCBC points (and therefore your card spending rebate) when no other bank forces you to do that?

Likewise, it’s disappointing to see that there’s a 10% haircut for British Airways Executive Club and Etihad Guest , when Citibank and the HSBC TravelOne Card offer transfers to both at the same ratio as KrisFlyer.

It’s true that  United MileagePlus  does enjoy a slightly better ratio via OCBC than Standard Chartered (3,500 SC points = 1,000 United miles), but we’re really talking fine margins here. Moreover, MileagePlus isn’t anywhere as useful as it used to be- while it absorbs fuel surcharges on redemptions (very handy for Lufthansa awards), the programme received a massive nerf in early June.

As for hotel partners, the ratios for IHG and Marriott Bonvoy aren’t that appealing when you factor in the opportunity cost- you’re basically forgoing 1 KrisFlyer mile (~1.5 SG cents) for every IHG (~0.5 US cents/0.67 SG cents) or Bonvoy (~0.7 US cents/0.94 SG cents)

What about Accor ? This is an easier comparison since Accor works like a cashback programme where 2,000 points = €40. This implies an opportunity cost of 1.5 SG cents per KrisFlyer mile, which is marginal, really. I would only consider it if Accor brings back one of its conversion bonuses.

As for conversion blocks:

  • Transfers to KrisFlyer must be in blocks of 1,000 90°N Miles
  • Transfers for all other programmes must be a minimum of 1,000 90°N Miles , but subsequent conversions can be in blocks of 100 90°N Miles

The OCBC 90°N Card used to offer free points conversions, but this was nerfed in February 2023 and a S$25 fee now applies across the board.

This is waived for all programmes (except KrisFlyer) until 30 October 2023.

Transfer Times

OCBC splits its partners across two different platforms:

  • Transfers for KrisFlyer miles are done via the OCBC Rewards portal , and are usually processed within 24 hours

  • Transfers for the other programmes are done via the STACK Rewards portal, under the Points Exchange tab. Transfers should be more or less instantaneous (with the exception of Accor Live Limitless, which will take a few working days), because they’re powered by Ascenda Loyalty which has a direct API linkage with the airlines.

Other card perks

Bonus interest with ocbc 360 account.

OCBC 90°N Cardholders who spend at least S$500 per month on their card will be eligible for a bonus 0.6% p.a . on the first S$100,000 in an OCBC 360 Account.

Assuming you keep the full S$100,000 inside, that works out to an extra S$600 interest per year.

Travel with OCBC portal

OCBC 90°N Cardholders can use their 90°N Miles to pay for airfare and hotel bookings on the Travel with OCBC portal at the following rates:

This used to be  much  better in the past, where you could get up to 2.88 cents per 90°N Mile on First Class fares. Unfortunately, that valuation was nerfed, and while 1.49 cents per 90°N Mile might make sense in certain circumstances, it’s not something I’d heartily endorse.

Summary Review: OCBC 90°N Card

The OCBC 90°N Card strikes me as a classic example of “good while it lasted”. The launch offers were fantastic: an uncapped 4 mpd on foreign currency spending, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Air Asia and Jetstar bookings, 8 mpd on Airbnb, and there was a time where you could  buy Business Class tickets to Europe from just S$1,000 before Travel with OCBC got nerfed!

But it’s all gone quiet ever since. While the 1.3/2.1 mpd earn rates are slightly better than the competition, the annoying S$5 earning blocks offset the advantage on smaller transactions. Likewise, non-expiring points are great, but free transfers to KrisFlyer are no longer offered, and while there’s transfer partner variety, the conversion ratios come pre-nerfed for most programmes.

If you ask me, this card badly needs a spark, and I don’t just mean the light-up LED.

Good for use until 29 Feb 2020. After that, switch back to the BOC Elite Miles card.

Syok

The best looking card at entry level from OCBC ever, basically the OCBC card design is so lame, their designer deserve to be fired..

No Brainer

Not a compelling proposition overall. Better miles earning rates during the promo period, and then back to average-ness after that. The promos are key to this card – give them a longer lifespan and OCBC may have a winner on its hands. Otherwise meh as a gen spend card. Edit for clarity.

Aaron Wong

The way I see it, this card is on par with dbs altitude and Citi PM visa. Very similar mpd rates (after promo ends), but each has tis own usp. Dbs altitude- 3mpd on flights + hotels. Citi pm- 12 xfer partners. Ocbc 90n- no xfer fees. Which one you prefer depends on what you value- if you’re a krisflyer or bust person, you won’t value the additional xfer partners on Citi. If you hardly ever book revenue tickets or hotels, you won’t value the 3 mph on altitude. If you want something other than krisflyer, Ocbc 90n won’t appeal.

Some ppl are funny right? Some brands go on sale, do ppl say “don’t buy, not worth to buy on sale. I will only buy if this brand have sale whole year long. If it’s promo for a certain period, I won’t buy. “

Promo is meant to be used there and then. Don’t complain when got lobang!

milefan

this has come just in time for my overseas trip. 4 mpd with no cap ftw

chk

Since OCBC last year said I don’t qualify for Titanium in writing, I won’t get this card unless I go apply at their branch. Wonder why I am banned by OCBC from getting even their low level cards when after that letter, I can get AMEX charge and X-Card. Must have done something wrong decades ago and blacklisted.

Rainee

can use this card to buy lifemiles/alaskan miles?

Sure, 4 mpd

may

isn’t prvi fx rate at 3.25%?

thanks! updated it.

SL

Does buying air tickets from Expedia qualify for 8mpd too?

Hector

Yes only with participating airlines

mikey

And you must go through their dedicated landing page link http://www.expedia.com.sg/ocbc90n – guessing OCBC gets a referral fee which offsets cost of miles?

Remember … airlines exclusion, AND hotel exclusions!! Be careful. Hotel are heavily restricted! Basically non chain / branded are ok. Chain and branded hotels are excluded.

curious

so grab top ups will be counted in as gen spend right? not excluded right?

gg

Did you test it out?

LS

Can we get points if we use services such as renthero to pay the rent with this card ? Could such services be used to reach the $5000 expense threshold in 3 months ?

I can’t find the information online; appreciate if you can circulate the information 🙂

Just to be clear: even all online foreign currency spend qualify for 4mpd? It appears so to me in the T&C

Almerick

Anyone applied and already received the card? I used MyInfo to apply when this article came out but til now no word 😐

NJG

I only tried to apply for one online just now using MyInfo, and as soon as I enter the first page worth of information on the OCBC website and click “next”, I get a “system error” message, even after using different browsers. After calling OCBC to check on this, all they say is “Can you try again later, pls?”. Doesn’t inspire much confidence in their IT set-up…

Update: After unsuccessfully trying for three consecutive days to apply for this card using MyInfo across multiple browsers and devices, today I decided to use the traditional method of filling in my information myself instead. And voila, the system accepted my application – though I do not know yet whether I have been successful or not. So it appears that at least for some people, OCBC cannot use MyInfo as a method to apply for cards yet.

My application was approved in the same day.

J

I applied through MyInfo yesterday and no word as well – no email notification, nothing. (I had my expectations set high from the “same day approvals” remarks I guess) I clicked to OCBC via the referal link in this article

Owen

Does this count as one of the OCBC Credit Cards for OCBC 360 account bonus?

Ken

Applied for the card through “my info” and received the electronic card within a few hours for online usage. By evening there was a courier at my door delivering the physical card-absolutely amazed with the service. I have been using the BOC elite Card for all my general foreign spends since Nov 2018 but this one definitely is a fantastic promo. The only critique I have is that they award 4mpd for Shilla & DFS@ Changi but not for online changi portal: ishop changi! Also while other OCBC credit cards offer fuel discount, there is no promo for fuel on …  Read more »

What does FCY 4.0 mean?

CL

Ocbc is now saying that SQ website ticket purchases will only get the 4mpd if cardholders go to ocbc website first and click through to SQ. Otherwise, if purchases are made directly, only 1.2mpd. This doesn’t seem to be stated anywhere on the T&Cs.

Where are they saying that? Checked with ocbc- only expedia and agoda need to go via special link. Singapore Airlines can just book as per normal

I just got my statement and didn’t get the bonus points for SQ bookings. Called up and the call centre lady said it’s because I didn’t click through from ocbc’s website and cited Agoda as an example of the requirement. Will call again tonight and try.

I thought as long as you pay using OCBC 90N Card to pay SQ bookings on line, one is eligible for the mpd. Can you share the link from OCBC website. I could not find the link from ocbc website.

as long as you pay via the SQ website, you will get 4 mpd. there is no special link for SIA. fyi, there was a coding error that resulted in people not getting the proper bonus for SIA purchases. it has since been fixed and missing miles have been credited.

Mile Newbie

Curios if only the Airbnb bonus only applies to accommodations? Or experiences/tours bought on Airbnb counts toward this too?

as long as merchant of record is airbnb, it will earn 4 mpd

Does Grab top up qualify for miles?
