Spotify takes the pain out of road trip playlists with Soundtrack Your Ride

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

Spotify and playlists go together like chocolate and peanut butter (or whatever awesome combo doesn’t trigger your allergies), but it’s not always easy finding just the right playlist for a particular event. Take the classic Thanksgiving road trip: Depending on where you and your family members live, you could be looking at anywhere from one hour to 48 hours of highway haulin’. Do you really want to painstakingly assemble that much music? Of course you don’t. So Spotify has created a new tool called Soundtrack Your Ride , which will create a custom playlist of virtually any length, based on your road trip parameters.

The tool, which works for both Premium and free Spotify tiers, takes the form of a quiz. First, you enter your location and your destination on a giant map of the U.S. Unfortunately for family living in Canada, you can’t enter Canadian locations even though they’re quite prominently displayed on the map itself. You’ll just have to listen to the CBC until you’re south of the border.

Once you’ve entered your itinerary (multiple destinations will have to be handled as separate rides), the tool generates a predicted amount of time for the trip, which you can manually adjust if you think the estimate is too long or short. Now it’s time to answer a few questions.

  • Who are you be traveling with? (Solo, Kids, Pets, Friends, Partner) Sorry, no combos like Kids+Pets are allowed
  • What’s your favorite genre for the road? (Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, Country, Rock, Mood, Indie, EDM)
  • What’s your drive vibe? (Mellow, Sing-alongs, High-energy, Classic, Love sick, Pedal to the metal, Slow ride)
  • What’s your ultimate driving song? (A choice of six tracks presumably picked as being relevant examples from your three previous selections)
  • What kind of vehicle are you riding in? (SUV, Convertible , Electric , Sedan , Pickup Truck )

Based on your selections, the tool then cobbles together a playlist, which you can check out inside the Spotify app.

I decided to see what the tool would choose for me, based on an imaginary road trip from hell that I have zero plans to undertake. The scenario: My kids and I have been invited by Donald Trump to spend Thanksgiving with him and the rest of the First Family at his digs at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Since we’re currently hanging out at the Digital Trends headquarters in Portland, Oregon, it’s going to be a back-breaking, coast-to-coast 46 hours and eight minutes odyssey across 11 states.

  • Spotify’s new AI Playlist feature uses text prompts to curate playlists
  • Spotify’s new AI-driven DJ spins tracks just for you
  • Spotify Wrapped 2022 is here: What’s your ‘listening personality’?

We’ll be traveling in an SUV and our favorite genre for the road (or anytime, really) is rock. Our mood? Classic. Our ultimate driving song? C’mon, you already knew this one: Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody . I almost chose Life Is A Highway , but because Spotify only offered me the cover by Rascal Flatts, and not the original by fellow Canadian Tom Cochrane, I had to go with Queen.

On the whole, Soundtrack Your Ride did a pretty good job at reflecting my stated tastes. The resulting 676-song playlist included generous helpings of Queen, Van Morrison, Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, and Led Zeppelin, all of whom sit right in the middle of what I consider to be the “rock with a classic vibe” zone. But there were also some bizarre outliers. Along with the classic rock turkey, our Thanksgiving road trip feast included a zesty cranberry sauce of Godsmack, Metallica, and Rob Zombie, and a sugary dessert of ABBA and Wham!

Why were these artists included? Maybe it was my vehicle choice and traveling companions. Perhaps the tool figured that in order to survive almost 48 hours on the road with my kids in an SUV, I was going to need frequent jolts to my nervous system followed by upbeat family-friendly tunes. I could have opted to keep explicit lyrics out of the playlist, but I figured why should I be the only one hurling expletives. Besides, my kids have heard worse.

Will Soundtrack Your Ride solve your road trip playlist blues? I can’t guarantee that, but given the whole procedure takes less than 60 seconds, you should definitely see what it picks for you. You might just be adding Spotify to the list of things you’re thankful for this holiday season.

Spotify has released a software update for its Car Thing companion device that gives it several new features including the ability to see and answer your incoming calls, add new items to your play queue, and control non-Spotify media. Some of the new features are only available on iOS devices, but Spotify says it is working to bring them to Android phones too.

Car Thing is a $90 device that combines a 4-inch touchscreen with a large navigation wheel, shortcut buttons, and voice recognition and connects to your phone via Bluetooth. It's designed to give you an easier way to navigate and play Spotify's content while driving and is especially handy for those who don't have Apple's CarPlay or Google's Android Auto built into their car's infotainment system. You need a Spotify Premium account to use Car Thing and the device is currently only available in the U.S.

If you took note of Spotify's very limited release of its Car Thing music player and thought that it might make a good addition to your vehicle, we have good news: It's no longer an invite-only exclusive. If you live in the U.S. and have a Spotify Premium account and $90 burning a hole in your pocket, you can grab one of these devices for yourself.

As a quick refresher, Car Thing is a device that's meant to make it a lot easier to navigate and play audio from Spotify in your car. Car Thing doesn't offer any functions that you can't get through your phone or your in-car infotainment system (if it has Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), but if you're one of the many folks who don't want to use (or can't use) one of those options, Car Thing is a $90 convenience.

Spotify announced almost a year ago that it would launch a new subscription tier for its Premium members called Spotify HiFi before the end of 2021. As the name suggests, Spotify said the new, more expensive tier would distinguish itself by offering "lossless CD-quality" audio -- a significant step up in quality over the company's current maximum streaming quality, which is still based on a lossy compression system. But 2021 is now in our collective rearview mirror and, so far, there's still no sign of Spotify HiFi.

And concerns are growing that even Spotify can't say for sure when or if it will actually launch the new tier. Now, 9to5Mac has spotted a message from the company on its community support site that doesn't exactly fill us with confidence: Hey folks,

19 Ways to Make the Ultimate Road Trip Playlist (on Spotify) [2019]

Are you heading out on a road trip and in need of some direction for putting together the ultimate road trip playlist? If that’s the case, then I’ve got several ways to help you put together the ultimate road trip playlist on Spotify!

1. Understand how Spotify shuffle works

This is a very important thing to know.

One thing many people don’t know is that the shuffle feature on Spotify is not always completely random. This means that it won’t always cycle through all of the songs on your playlist!

But there’s a way you can combat this.

If you go to the filter option whether on desktop or on mobile, you can filter your playlist by track and then try shuffle. That usually works for me but you might need to try troubleshooting with one of these methods .

If those don’t work you can try out the third party app Spotify Randomizer

2. Start with the genre (or artist)

When you’re ready to start making your playlist, don’t just start saving random hits to your playlist.

It’s best to start with a genre or an artist.

Both can be helpful but I prefer to go with a genre.

Some genres are just meant to be made into playlists like 80s music, for example. I usually pick a genre and then a general time frame though. One of my recent genres for a playlist was 90s/early 2000s alternative and another was 2010 to 2014 Top 40.

Sometimes I add a little special focus (sub-genre) to the playlist too like my recent  “late 90s/early 2000s hip hop & Houston rap” playlist.

3. Create a playlist with “road trip classics”

I like to have playlists with specific genres like alternative, pop, rap, country, etc. because many times you just want to stick to one genre and vibe to it until you feel like switching it up to something else.

But there are some songs that are road trip classics that fit really well into one ultimate road trip classic playlist. Certain artists fall into this category like Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, Johnny Cash — the list could go on and on.

I recommend making one playlist filled with these classics so that you’ll have at least one core playlist with road trip classics which will allow your other playlists to stay true to their genres without you wondering how to fit in the classics.

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

4. Have some upbeat music

Chances are you’re going to have some very long stretches on your road trip. In that case, you’re going to need to have some music that won’t put you to sleep.

Having a bunch of slow songs won’t keep you up, so consider having a playlist on deck with a lot of BPM, EDM, hip hop, or high energy rock songs that can help give you that much-needed boost of energy when you’re tired.

5. Don’t be precise with the playlist name

Unless you’re just really into precision, I don’t suggest going with exact years because it will make building the playlist tedious and you will inevitably come across songs you love that you’ll have to keep off the playlist.

So my “2010 to 2014 Top 40” probably has songs from 2008 to 2016. I guess I could go back and check each song and change the title but that’s too tedious for me and I really don’t care if the title is precise.

I know what songs to expect and most others would too.

Of course you can try to avoid this issue by listing “late 90s” but what happens when you find that early to mid 90s song you love?

Just avoid precision.

6. Personalize the playlist and go big

There’s a big difference between making a playlist for a party versus making a playlist for a road trip.

In particular, there are two big differences.

#1: It’s more personal

The first is that a road trip playlist is for you and potentially a only a few others.

For a party you might be catering to the tastes of dozens or even over 100 people. So you should feel free to personalize your playlist as much as you’d like without the pressure of trying to please a group of people or conform to mainstream music.

#2: Don’t worry about the size of the playlist

When you’re making a playlist for a party, you often want to select a bank of songs with the intention of playing all of those songs for the length of a party. So, for example, if the party is set to last about five hours, you might put together a list with songs to cover five or six hours.

But if you’re going on a long road trip, five or six hours might only be one segment or half a segment on your road trip.

So when it comes to the size of a playlist for a road trip, I don’t think you can ever go too long.

As long as you’re keeping your playlists organized by certain genres, you shouldn’t have to worry about creating huge playlists that lack identity and cohesiveness.

7. Use the recommendations on Spotify

I first single out one song and then add that to my playlist.

I then scroll down to “Recommended Songs” and then just click “Add” and those songs are instantly added to the playlist.

The algorithms used by Spotify are pretty good although after I’ve added 100 to 200 songs the recommendations can become very repetitive and there’s no way to remove songs you don’t like so the feature needs some improvement.

It’s still a great way to expand your playlist though.

8. Utilize other playlists

If you want to build the ultimate road trip playlist then you need to research other related playlists because you will inevitably leave out tons of songs and artists that you simply can’t remember.

So it’s often a good idea to start building your playlists based on other playlists. For example, if I’m looking for hits around 2010, I’ll just search “2010.”

Then I need to scroll down and find the playlists section and click “See All.”

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

Now I’ll be able to view a lot of different playlists that fit my description. You can note the number of followers on each of the playlists to see which are the most popular.

Personally, I like to dig into many of the different playlists to make sure that I don’t miss anything. It’s not uncommon for me to scroll through a dozen or so playlists as I try to leave no stone unturned.

Tip: Try notating the names of the playlists as you go through them so you can easily keep track of all of the playlists you’ve viewed.

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

9. Sort the playlists efficiently

Don’t just find a playlist and start randomly adding songs from it. There’s a more efficient way to go about it.

Find the playlist and first sort by the artist.

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

This has several key advantages.

Easier to remember

You’ll be able to more easily remember which songs you’ve picked for a specific artist. By seeing their songs lumped together, it also becomes easier to refresh your memory about their catalog.

View albums

Sorting this way also allows you to view the albums so you can quickly recall the old albums you may have forgotten about and see if the playlist has left off any key albums from that artist.

Systematically search artists

Most importantly, this sorting method allows you to search each artist one-by-one for other songs that you like. With Spotify you can simply click on the artist and then go directly to their page where you can scroll through all of their major hits and add them to your playlist one-by-one.

Once you’ve added all of the songs you like from them, simply hit the back button and return to the playlist.

Now you can do the same thing for the artists remaining on your playlist.

Search related artists

And once you’ve gone through all of the artists, you can check the “Related Artists” which are listed next to the artists when you click on them. That will open up your options to many more artists that you can use this same approach on.

This systematic approach will allow you to build up your playlist very efficiently and will decrease the odds of you forgetting about your favorite artists and albums.

If you do this process for a hand full of playlists, you’ll have a very deep playlist with tons of songs in a hurry.

This is my number one method for building quality playlists.

10. Find songs for specific destinations/moments

Some songs are tied to specific locations and are fun to listen to when traveling to or through those places.

Songs made for destinations

For example, if you’re headed to Texas what could be better than Amarillo by Morning by George Strait? Or if you’re headed into California you can find tons of songs to fit right into your West Coast travels ( Phantom Planet — California , Tupac — California , etc.)

Songs that go with destinations

But sometimes there are songs that are just perfect for your destination because the sounds just goes with the destination perfectly.

I remember driving through the Valley of Fire in Nevada with Kashmir by Led Zeppelin blaring and it was a perfect song to have coming through the speakers as we road through the otherworldly terrain of that place.

Songs that go with moments

Another example is when a song just fits in with a moment to perfection. One day,  Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve happened to come on right after we got in the car after finishing the long and tiring hike down the Subway at Zion National Park. It was absolutely perfect.

It takes a little extra work to find perfect destination/moment songs but there are some resources  like this one  and this one can you give you some ideas.

Valley of Fire Highway, Nevada 5-2-14zw

11. Use Movie Soundtracks

Move soundtracks offer some epic songs to take with you on road trips. A lot of them are instrumentals, which can be great for clearing your mind out on the open road or having deep conversations with your travel partner.

Some of my favorite movie soundtracks are Blood Diamond, The Social Network, Gravity, Inception, Transformers, Lone Survivor (I’m an Explosions in the Sky fan) and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy movies.

You can find some epic movie soundtracks here  and here .

I usually like to listen to the soundtracks one by one but sometimes you can mix and mash them up in ways that still work.

Tip: A great idea is to get movie soundtrack playlists that relate to where a movie was filmed if you’re driving through or visiting that location.

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

12 Collaborate

On Spotify you can create a collaborative playlist by right-clicking on the name of the playlist and then selecting “Collaborative Playlist.” This will allow others you share the playlist with to subscribe to it but also add and delete songs so make sure that you trust their musical judgment.

13. Create a “Similar Playlist”

You can also right-click on the playlist to instantly create a similar playlist.

For my smaller playlists, this created a playlist the same size but for my larger playlists (over 300 songs), it created a playlist of about 50% of the size.

This is a great way to find related songs in an instant. Sometimes some of the songs are crap and they include duplicates sometimes  but I’m often able to find a number of songs I’ve forgotten about.

14. Use playlist tools

Once you’ve tried out the methods above, you might still be hungry for more great songs to add to your playlist.

There are several tools you can use to assist you with your playlist building. I’ll discuss one in detail and show you a few others that you might want to try out as well.

15. Playlist Miner

You can try out Playlist Miner , which is a great free tool for Spotify.

First you need to log-in with your Spotify credentials.

Next, you’ll search a for a topic or genre. For example, you could search for “workout music” but in this case I searched for “roadtrip.”

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

It then brought up a lot of different playlists and I selected “Find Top Tracks.”

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

It brought up a selection of random hits. Many of these were road trip classics like Hotel California, Californication, etc.

You can click on the song and it will open up the song in Spotify, making it easy to add them to your playlist.

The mix on these playlists can be very random but that’s good because that means that it will cover a wide basis which will make your playlist even more diverse.

There are several other tools you can use that accomplish the same or similar tasks of culling together songs based on specific search criteria.

These include:

  • Boil the Frog
  • Magic Playlist

You can read more about these tool (and others) here .

16. Sort out duplicates

You should wait until the end to worry about duplicates.

That’s because sometimes you might think you have a duplicate but you really don’t.

Many songs come in different versions too and sometimes if you really like a song you might want to have a radio version, live version, acoustic version, Hawaiian version, etc. Okay so maybe not Hawaiian but you get the point.

Also, if you’ve added a song multiple times that often means that you really like that song so maybe you’d prefer to have a duplicate on your playlist so that it comes up more frequently when you shuffle.

17. Don’t burn out to your playlists!

So you’ve put in hours researching hundreds of hits and you’re super pumped about your playlist, right?

Well, put your playlists on the shelf until it’s time for the trip.

You don’t want to burn yourself out on these songs before your trip. Our brains are wired so that when we listen to music we experience all sorts of sensations related to memory, movement, planning, etc.

In many ways, our brains are learning different things and we are experiencing different emotions from the music .

But at a certain point there’s nothing more to gain from a song and our minds seek out new stimulation.

I allow myself one to three full listens of each song while putting together a playlist and sometimes I don’t even listen to them at all if I know I’ll love the song.

This way, when it comes time for the trip, the songs feel very fresh and I can even listen to it multiple times without getting sick of it.

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

18. Take them offline

This is the final crucial step especially if you’re driving through areas like the Southwest where service is limited or non-existent.

Make sure that you download your songs before you embark on your trip. If you have the Spotify Premium subscription you can sync up to 3,333 tracks from the Spotify catalog on 3 separate devices (phone, tablet, computer, etc.).

That means you could have up to a total of  9,999  tracks offline

That’s enough to keep you occupied for a really long time.

19. Be careful with headphones on road trips

If you’re making this playlist to be played on your headphones while riding along on a road trip be careful about listening to loud music for hours on end. I once did a long road trip through some windy mountains from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido and I was jamming to my playlist for almost the entire trip.

I also took dramamine to avoid getting car sick in the windy roads.

So when we arrived to our hotel many hours later, I was not only drowsy from the dramamine but also about 80% deaf ! It was the craziest feeling but my hearing was almost completely gone for an entire evening and I thought I’d blown out my ear drums!

My hearing slowly came back the next day, and I was able to laugh about it but it was seriously scary, so don’t let this happen to you!

Doctors recommend you to limit listening to music on your devices at levels up to 60% of maximum volume for a total of  60 minutes  a day. On my trip, I was probably at about 90% for 6.5 hours, hence why I went deaf.

Final word on road trip playlists

I think the ideal way to go about a road trip is to have three to five playlists at your disposal to fit different needs. If you do that you will not run out of fresh songs to enjoy and you’ll probably discover or rediscover many great hits you’ve been missing out on for years.

The key is to approach your song selection systematically and you won’t miss out on any of the songs you love. Also, If you can dig a little deep to find songs that have a connection to the places you’re visiting and you can refrain from burnin yourself out with your playlists, you’ll have hours upon hours of great listening sessions on your road trip.

My boyfriend and I are road tripping soon, so I wanted some tips! I didn’t know you should find upbeat music to keep you up on long stretches of the drive. I’ll keep that in mind and find music my boyfriend and I would both like!

The Ultimate Road Trip Playlist According to Travelers, Editors, and Spotify

This year has been nothing short of a whirlwind. As we wrap up the year, international travel is still a no go, and flying in general seems like a bit of a risky proposition. As a result, the humble road trip has roared back on our collective radar as many of us have been taking to the road as a way to get out of the house and explore our surroundings near and far.

When we began discussing road trips on zoom calls and in Slack channels, the one thing that everyone could agree on was that music was essential. A good soundtrack can mean the difference between the hours flying by as fast as the scenery out the window or turning around before you reach your destination.

So what makes a great road trip playlist? It starts with the songs, but with so many incredible choices out there, it’s hard to whittle down to something that stands up to the test of time. However, we had an idea.

To make the perfect road trip playlist, we used three components. First, we looked at Spotify data to identify the most popular songs for driving, according to the top 100 road trip playlists. Next, we surveyed our TripSavvy readers to get their take. After that, our editors weighed in on their favorite songs. In the end, we were left with 29 carefully curated high-vibe songs that create the ultimate travel music of 2020.

Here are the top road trip songs. For the best listening experience, try playing them in order. Enjoy!

"Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey

With almost one billion streams on Spotify, it's no surprise "Don't Stop Believin'" cracks the top 3, with 24 appearances on Spotify's top road trip playlists. So next time you're in your car, turn up the volume and sing on and on and on and on.

"Circles" by Post Malone

There's nothing nicer than singing along to your favourite tunes on a road trip , but finding the perfect soundtrack to your travels can be tricky. Help is at hand from audio streaming platform Spotify, which has launched a feature called Soundtrack your Ride.

Women friends traveling and driving having fun dancing in the car with opened roof

It generates a playlist for you based on your Spotify history and your answers to a few questions. You start by using the Google Maps tool or time selector to select the length and route of your car journey, and then take a short quiz consisting of five questions. Spotify then uses your listening habits and quiz choices to put together a soundtrack for the length of your ride.

A woman looking out the window from a car

The questions it asks includes who you're travelling with - solo, kids, friends, pet or partner - the kind of a car you drive and your favourite genre for the road.  You also select your "drive vibe," with the options including "mellow," "high-energy" and "love-sick." It also asks you to select your ultimate driving song from one of six choices. These include "Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, “Body Like a Back Road” by Sam Hunt, “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers, “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts and “Ridin’ Solo” by Jason Derulo.

A road through the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Once all of this is completed, Spotify generates a playlist that aims to have you cruising along in musical heaven on your trip. To find out more about it and compile your own roadtrip playlist, please see here.

You can also check out Lonely Planet's Spotify playlists  here .

Spotify will now make a road trip playlist for you

It’s not as frighteningly accurate as the daily mix playlists, though.

Spotify Soundtrack your Ride

Spotify has launched Soundtrack your Ride , a new feature that generates a road trip playlist for you based on your Spotify history and your answers to a few questions.

First, the tool asks you to put in your start and endpoints, and then it calculates your route and the length of your trip using Google Maps. This isn’t the first collaboration between the mapping app and streaming service: Google Maps and Spotify integrated a year ago to make it easier to stream audio while navigating.

Then, Spotify gives you a quiz consisting of five questions. It asks you who you’re traveling with, what kind of a car you drive, and what your “drive vibe” is (whatever that means). Spotify also asks you two music-related questions, with limited options. First, it’ll ask you what your favorite genre for the road is (pop, rock, hip-hop / rap, country, indie, EDM, or a genre called “mood”).

Spotify will then ask you to pick “your ultimate driving song” from a mere six choices: Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles,” Jason Derulo’s “Ridin’ Solo,” Rascal Flatts’ “Life is a Highway,” Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road,” or “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers. (There is a distinct split here among songs with a road or driving theme and songs with no such mention or connection to car travel.)

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

Spotify will generate a playlist with enough songs to fill the length of your trip, which is then saved to your library. Based on my answers — rock, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “high energy” as my drive vibe — Spotify gave me a mix of classic rock and the music I typically listen to. Since Spotify is always so surprisingly on point with its personalized playlists, I felt like the road trip recommendations were less appealing than what I normally get through Spotify’s “Made for You” options.

Soundtrack your Ride also has some critical flaws — namely, that you can’t really use this feature at the point when you’d need it the most, like when you’re on the road and realize you don’t have a playlist. It does technically work on mobile; I could navigate to the URL on the browser on my phone, but the format wasn’t mobile-friendly, with some of the answer options getting cut off. There’s no way to access Soundtrack your Ride through either the desktop or mobile app, at least for now.

by The Proclaimers

“I’m Gonna Be” is the ultimate song about traveling far distances. Plus, it is just plain fun to sing along to in the car! While the Proclaimers might prefer to walk, we prefer to drive. But you know this song will be blasting on our car radio. (And for a more wistful drive, check out the Sleeping at Last cover.)

by Tom Petty

There are lots of places to run to and this song makes a good soundtrack to any of them. For anyone dreaming of that next adventure, this road trip song is always fun to sing along to with the windows down and the wind in your hair.

by The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Road Trippin’ is an anthem of the band’s Pacific Coast Highway road trip. But it is a good song to accompany any of the Best USA Road Trip Ideas Routes .

by Johnny Cash

No matter where your road trip is taking you, chances are that this song mentions it. “I’ve Been Everywhere” is the quintessential road trip song about a man who has been…well…everywhere! (92 places are mentioned in the song, if you’re keeping track). Check out this interactive map to see everywhere the singer visits in the song.

by Tom Cochrane (or Rascal Flatts)

Though more of a metaphor for the ups and downs of life, there is no better song to score a long drive on the highway. Check out the Tom Cochrane version or Rascal Flatt’s version from the movie Cars .

by Simon & Garfunkel

America is a song about two young lovers hitchhiking their way across the United States, in search of “America.” Full of adventure and optimism this song reminds us that everyone is on their own journey.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero

Though not really about traveling, this feel-good song takes us on a journey about love. It reminds us that no matter how far or wide we drive, home is based on who you’re with. It also makes the perfect last song in a road trip playlist, to play as you’re coming home.

by Willie Nelson

While “On the Road Again” was originally written about being on tour, it has morphed into a road trip anthem. It’s a song about going new places and seeing new things, making it the perfect tune to blast while you’re on the road (again).

by Chuck Berry

Get your kicks to this classic road trip song that takes you on a journey on the Mother Road. While it might not be the essential song for every road trip, if you’re planning a Route 66 road trip , this song has to be at the top of your playlist.

by Lindsey Buckingham

“Holiday Road” cemented its place as the quintessential road trip song when it was used as the theme song to the quintessential road trip movie , National Lampoon’s Vacation , in 1983.

by Miley Cyrus

“Party in the USA” is more about moving across the country than driving across the country. But we all know that butterflies-in-our-stomach feeling that comes with experience something new for the first time. This song evokes both that adrenaline nervousness and wide-eyed wonder that can come with taking a chance, and how a good song can put you in the right mindset for anything. Plus it is just a fun song to sing in the car!

by Bruce Springsteen

We often travel to escape our normal routine and seek the adventure that is out of our bounds. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” has become an ultimate road trip anthem to the restlessness that keeps us on the road searching for something new.

by Sheryl Crow

Life has twists and turns, just as a road trip does. Using the metaphors of the road, this song evokes the ups and downs of a bumpy life and a bumpy highway. Plus the chorus is fun to sing along to in the car. It will surely get you a little bit closer to feeling fine.

For those times on the road when you just want to take it easy, this song is for you. This is the perfect driving song for any road trip, but especially if you plan to be standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona (there’s even a Standin’ on a Corner roadside attraction on Route 6 based off of this famous road trip song!).

by Fleetwood Mac

“Go Your Own Way” was originally a break up song but it has morphed into a song that means so much more to those who love to go, or travel, their own way. Any Fleetwood Mac song rounds out a road trip playlist and belting out, “go your own way,” makes this song a must add.

Best Spotify Playlists For Your Road Trip

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

road trip movie soundtrack spotify

I've been on my share of road trips, from family vacations to adventures with friends to weekend getaways with my husband. And what I know from these car rides is that one of the most important things to have ready to go is music. Nobody wants to wait 30 minutes between each song during a 5-hour car ride as someone looks for the next hit.

It's time to do yourself a favor and get the music squared away before your vehicle pulls out of the driveway. Do you want the perfect selection of songs to roll down your windows to, keep your kids entertained or help eliminate the travel stress you're feeling? If so, check out these links to playlists on Spotify and save the ones you like for your next road trip.

*Disclaimer: I do not support all of the content within these songs.

PLAYLISTS TO SING ALONG TO:

2010s Throwbacks by Nostalgic Vibes

I guarantee that if you've been listening to the radio/popular music streaming stations over the past 10 years, you'll know these hits. "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake? "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele? See, I told you. Once upon a time, these were your jams. Perhaps they still are ...

Movie Musicals by jadybabyy Hey, theater nerds, this is for you. (Don't worry, I'm one, too.) Raise your hand if you can rap all the Hamilton lyrics or enjoy practicing those high notes in The Phantom of the Opera . Of course, I couldn't forget Disney hits, so this selection has those, too.

PLAYLISTS TO CRUISE TO:

R&B - 1990's and up by Marcella Standen Other than jazz, is any music genre truly as smooth as contemporary R&B? On this customized station, you'll find songs from artists like Alicia Keys, Usher and Chris Brown that will make you wish you were riding in a convertible with the top down.

CRUISER COUNTRY by Franz Lalu

Country music was basically made for cruising (even if that's just on a tractor). But it can be difficult to find a playlist on Spotify with variety. So, check out this one, which covers new and some older country from male and female artists.

PLAYLISTS FOR A FAMILY VACATION:

Kids Playlist by cheskadenise22 When your kids aren't sleeping, they'll need entertainment. Try this collection of songs from popular children's movies. Have you heard them a million times? Probably. But at least you'll be 100% certain that they'll do the trick in keeping your kiddos occupied.

All Time Classics (50's-00's) by Darcy Cleeve

When you have a multigenerational carload, it's hard to please everyone, but this playlist just might do it. With songs like "Ring Of Fire," "I Will Survive" and "Hey There Delilah," you can entertain grandparents, parents AND teenagers who, if they don't know these hits, arguably should be educated.

Turning up the volume on Bohemian Rhapsody song

PLAYLISTS FOR A GIRLS TRIP:

Who runs the World by Joy Baker

I bet you can guess what kind of playlist you'll be listening to from the title alone. This is a compilation of popular songs from modern female artists. It includes Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears ... all the girl power.

Timeless Love Songs by Spotify

Heading to a bachelorette party with your gals? In addition to upbeat songs, at some point, you might want to slow it down and get sentimental about love. Celebrate the upcoming wedding with these timeless tunes. Who knows? Maybe the bride and groom still need a first dance song, and this romantic rundown will give them good ideas.

PLAYLISTS TO HELP YOU RELAX/CHILL:

Indie Folk & Alternative Music - Best Indie Folk Songs by Indiemono

Take in the drivable sights with these easy listening melodies in the background. You'll recognize The Lumineers, Bon Iver and The Head And The Heart. There will also be artists you're likely not familiar with, but their music will calm your nerves just the same.

Worship Acoustics by Jan Ladub

Let your soul find rest from your noisy kids in the backseat with this playlist. It breaks down all the popular Christian worship hits from Hillsong Worship, Elevation Worship, Chris Tomlin and more. While quieter, these songs are still easy to sing along to.

PLAYLISTS TO HELP YOU STAY AWAKE:

Classic Rock by Filtr Finland

This compilation includes some of the top songs and artists — AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin — that most rock lovers will know. They'll awaken your tired senses, make you want to headbang and play air guitar. (Just don't attempt that if you're the driver, please.)

MOVIE & TV Theme Songs (Guessing Game) by Critic Kebab

It's time for a quiz! No worries, it's a fun one. How many of these movie and TV show theme songs can you name? Get everyone in the car participating and maybe even make it a competition. The winner could get shotgun, a road trip treat or even choose the next playlist.

The 13 Best Road Trip Albums for Every Leg of the Journey

Author image: purewow author

There’s nothing like being on the open road…but let’s be real, extended periods behind the wheel only feel like a vacation, not a headache (or backache or buttache), when you have really great music to groove to. Here, a roundup of the very best road trip albums for your listening pleasure, whether you need a soundtrack for solo car travel or are simply trying to tune out a backseat driver in the most enjoyable way possible.

15 Road Trips from Houston That Show Off the Best Part of Texas

best-road-trip-albums-fleetwood-mac

1. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac (1977)

  • Best for Stormy Weather

There's never a bad time to put on Fleetwood Mac’s best-selling album, but we’re particularly partial to it when stormy weather strikes. Slow your roll (for safety’s sake, of course) and turn up the volume on moody, high drama hits, like “The Chain,” “Gold Dust Woman” and “Oh Daddy.” Then, transition to the peppier tracks and put the pedal to the metal when the sun comes out—because, yes, this album kind of has it all.

best-road-trip-albums-rolling-stones

2. Exile on Main Street by The Rolling Stones (1972)

  • Best Rock and Roll

This masterpiece from the Stones is arguably the best rock n’ roll album of all time, so it should come as no surprise that it has too-cool-for-school summer vibes to spare. In fact, the album—a clever compilation of blues, country and straight rock songs—captures nearly every aspect of the all-American road trip experience with bonus points for technical brilliance.

best-road-trip-albums-hank-williams

3. Ramblin' Man by Hank Williams (1955)

  • Best for Night Driving

Hank Williams’ voice is one of a kind: beautiful, haunting and, above all, never boring. If you’re looking for a deeply emotional nighttime listen that’s more badass than weepy and will keep you wide awake without killing the chill vibe, this album—a perfect expression of the influential country singer’s ramblin’ blues—has got you covered.

best-road-trip-albums-marvin-gaye

4. United by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (1967)

  • Best for Couples

Listen to soul artists Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s first duet album and you’d never believe the pair were actually just BFFs. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” is obvious fodder for a passionate sing-along, but the loving feeling and wholesome upbeat vibes of all the other tracks—including “You Got What It Takes,” “Your Precious Love” and a quirky cover of “Somethin’ Stupid,” to name a few—combine to create a perfect soundtrack for road trip romance.

best-road-trip-albums-talking-heads

5. Little Creatures by Talking Heads (1985)

  • Best for Kicking Off Your Journey

The poppiest and most approachable of Talking Heads albums, Little Creatures might as well be David Byrne’s answer to the question at hand. Neither too weird, nor too grating, this album is full of positive energy and even features opening and closing tracks (“And She Was” and “Road to Nowhere”) that perfectly illustrate the trajectory of road trip enthusiasm without ever killing the mood.

best-road-trip-albums-kind-geedorah

6. Take Me to Your Leader by King Geedorah (2003)

  • Best for Traffic

Got slowdown up ahead? Just queue up this work of genius from King Geedorah AKA MF Doom. You can expect masterfully sampled tracks, lo-fi beats and the lyrical stylings of a true wordsmith, plus an epic storyline that’s infinitely better than any audiobook you can find. In other words, it’s an immersive listening experience that will make you feel so damn cool, you won’t even mind that you’re going nowhere fast.

best-road-trip-albums-destinys-child

7. The Writing's on the Wall by Destiny's Child (1999)

  • Best Throwback

Take a trip back in time to when Beyoncé was fronting a girl group and frosted tips were still cool with this nostalgic favorite, which features modern classics like “Say My Name” and “Bugaboo.” Trust us, your soul has been asking you for a Destiny’s Child sing-along with friends for at least a decade.

best-road-trip-albums-the-band

8. The Band by The Band (1969)

  • Best for Country Driving

So you made it out of the big city and are ready for some music that matches the country scenery? Try The Band’s self-titled album, an easy-listening (in the best sense of the word) folk-rock gem that features impressive musical talent and plays out like American history come to life—so much so that you’d never guess all but one of the guys responsible is Canadian.

best-road-trip-albums-tom-petty-greatest-hits

9. Greatest Hits by Tom Petty (1976)

  • Best Compilation

We couldn’t pick just one Tom Petty album for the list since every damn one was destined to be the soundtrack for a carefree summer road trip. Fortunately, we didn’t have to since this compilation really does cover all the red-blooded rock and roll hits the legendary artist produced.

best-road-trip-albums-the-war-on-drugs

10. Lost in the Dream by The War on Drugs (2014)

  • Best Indie Jam

Understated chord changes and a melancholic tone characterize The War on Drugs’ refreshing reinterpretation of classic rock on Lost in the Dream , which happens to be an ode to restless wandering and is also arguably the most polished album the indie band has put out. Intricate, poignant and just right for a (relatively) low key music moment, this fine-tuned gem is well worth listening to from start to finish.

best-road-trip-albums-the-kinks

11. The Journey - Pt. 1 by The Kinks (2023)

  • Best to Listen to on Repeat

If you had to listen to only one album for an entire road trip, this might be the one—namely because The Kinks are such an exceptional example of a truly diverse band. Their repertoire includes whiffs of British Invasion pop with “You Really Got Me,” angst-ridden numbers like “Dead End Street” and “I’m Not Like Everybody Else,” whimsical ditties like “Lola,” dreamy, romantic songs like “Nothin’ in the World Can Stop Me Worrying ‘Bout That Girl” and even tracks that were tailor made for driving off into the (Waterloo) sunset. And yep, this compilation has ‘em all, so you’re likely to never get bored.

best-road-trip-albums-whitney-houston

12. Whitney Houston by Whitney Houston

  • Best for Road Trip Karaoke

Prepare your pipes, but don’t feel bad if you can’t match Whitney’s vocal range. (They call her The Voice for a reason.) Still, long notes are well-suited to long drives and there’s no better place to rehearse your next knockout karaoke performance than in the privacy of a car with belt-it-out tunes like “Saving All My Love For You” and “How Will I Know.”

best-road-trip-albums-olivia-rodrigo

13. Sour by Olivia Rodrigo

  • Best for a Breakup Trip

A little bit pop, a little bit alternative and a little bit punk make this punchy debut album by the Gen Z singer the perfect accompaniment to a girls’ weekend away with your newly single pal. Sing (or shout) along to breakup anthems like “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” then chill out to the softer melodies of “Happier” and “Favorite Crime.” Music is the greatest medicine, no?

Top 6 Spotify Playlists for Road Trips

Driving and music have been inseparably connected ever since the radio was dropped into a car almost eight decades ago. Our journey as drivers is often defined by the music we play while we drive. It starts driving around town, but then that first road trip comes along, and you have completely programmed the tunes that will play with each passing mile. Music and cars are like peanut butter and jelly.

Whether you are commuting to work, zipping down to the grocery store, or getting ready to drive across the country, music will be a part of your experience. Below, we’ve compiled a list of the top six Spotify playlists that are absolutely essential for enhancing the driving experience.

6. Road Trip Through the Decades

Each decade has its own vibe and, whether you’re from that specific decade or you just feel like you belong there, nothing says road trip like playing hits from the 70’s, the 80’s, the 90’s, or the 2000’s. There are playlists for every decade, or you can even narrow it down to a specific decade and genre!

5. Family Road Trip

Depending on the age of the kiddos in the back seat, not every Top 40 playlist will have the most appropriate songs. The Family Road Trip mix is the perfect playlist for families with youngsters. Every single song is something you’ll probably recognize, and the lyrics are appropriate for any age group. This list is curated for both adults and kids alike, staying away from Disney staples. Catchy tunes for the adults, and no new words for the kids’ vocabulary.

3. Road Trip Sing-Along Songs

No matter how exciting and how much fun a road trip is, there is always a point where you’ve been in the car too long, the energy slumps, and the moods in the vehicle shift to “get me out of this car!” A proper road trip sing-along is exactly the medicine required for a case of the mid-trip grumpies. It’s impossible to hear these songs hit the speakers and not start belting out the words at the top of your lungs.

"A special “Thank You” to you. From what I was told, you never let my daughter put her guard down. Good for you.

I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you’ve given to my daughter. I will recommend Valley Driving School to as many people as I can.

Again, “Thank You” to everyone. Who knows…maybe my daughter will be back for other types of drivers training ie: motorcycle, standard, or even semi-trucks. Could happen. She ‘loves’ to drive.

Best regards"

"I just wanted to send along a “Thank You” to all of you at Valley Driving School.

This has been a great experience for both my daughter and myself.

The office staff have been wonderful and always willing and able to sort through scheduling that works for us.

It can be a scary world out there driving our streets and now I know my daughter has been taught properly on how to handle those situations.

She’s a confident relaxed driver and I am a confident relaxed passenger/parent."

"We just wanted to tell you how impressed we were with the professional and thorough instruction our children received over the last several years.

Both kids' instructors were always punctual, polite and patient, giving our kids the knowledge and confidence to drive well and safely. Both passed their 'N' test on the first try. All dealings with the office staff were pleasant as well.

We would not hesitate to recommend Valley Driving to other parents looking for the right place for their children to learn to drive. Please pass our compliments and thanks to instructor! :)

THANK YOU!!!"

~The Wilson Family

"I want to thank my great instructor and helping me overcome my fear of driving.

I have failed the test a couple of times before taking lessons with him and frankly, this is the best investment I have done lately.

He helped me become a better driver, (I will always remember: mirror-signal-shoulder check), have confidence in myself and pass my test.

Great job! Thank you!"

"Amazing staff!!

I had 5 lessons with my Instructor and he was incredible, clear instructions and always updated on things I needed to do better right when they happened.

It felt like he wanted me to succeed not only because its part of his job, but because he genuinely wanted me to. The cost of the lessons were minimal in comparison to everything I have learned and I passed my road test on my first attempt.

Thanks again!"

"My instructor is kind and patient.

She made me feel comfortable behind the wheel and shaped me into the N driver I am today.

Everyone at Valley Driving School is really nice and welcoming. Also, the classroom is a good learning environment.

I highly recommend this driving school. Everyone I know got lessons there. :)"

Planning an epic west coast road trip: Part 2 - Road trip music

If you don’t have Spotify, no worries, you can take a look through these playlists and choose songs to get from wherever you want!

I’m a little obsessed with Spotify. I actually bought a subscription to Spotify specifically for a road trip… and then never looked back.

I decided to pay for “a month” (which turned into like 2 years so far) of Spotify because I loved that you can choose specific songs to listen to. I specifically chose it for road trip music though because Spotify lets you download music so you can listen to it without an wifi or data connection.

I figured that feature would be really useful on a road trip because there are definitely times while driving that your service gets sketchy, and can make your music cut out.

Since I’m going on another driving trip soon , I decided to put together this list of the best Spotify playlists to listen to on a road trip.

I love classic rock, but also pop, electronic, modern rock, and oldies. It all depends on the song. Luckily these playlists have a ton of great songs on them. It actually makes it kinda hard to choose which one to listen to ;-P

Hope you guys like ’em!

1. Classic Road Trip Songs

2. indie rock road trip, 3. 70’s road trip, 4. road trip sing-along songs.

No. Not like Mary Had A Little Lamb.

5. Family Road Trip

6. road trip, 7. get going, 8. drive through the mountains, 9. rockin’ road trip, 10. barcelona layover, 11. classic oldies.

Check out this GIANT list of 50 apps to use on your road trip!

Hope you guys like the playlists, don’t forget to share this around for others!

What are some of your fav songs?

I was recently introduced to this song called One Track Mind by Blood Panda ( see them on Spotify here ) and it has all the #RoadTripVibes so I’m adding their music video to this list. Check it out!

The Iron Claw Fact Check: 13 Biggest True Story Changes & Inaccuracies

8 details the iron claw leaves out about the von erich family's true story, the iron claw: what happened to jack von erich jr. in real life.

  • The Iron Claw chronicles the rise to fame of the Von Erich brothers, a family of pro wrestlers from Texas whose lineage was riddled with tragedy.
  • The Iron Claw soundtrack features a handful of '70s rock classics and a few country numbers.
  • Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry, who composed the film's score, also wrote an original song for The Iron Claw with his wife called "Live That Way Forever," which is performed by one of the characters in the film.

Although the events of the film are devastating, The Iron Claw 's soundtrack is full of upbeat era and setting-specific songs. Written and directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw tells the true story of the Von Erich brothers from Texas , whose lineage was said to be "cursed" due to the many tragedies their family endured before, during, and after their rise to fame as pro wrestlers in the '80s. The four Von Erich brothers depicted in The Iron Claw are played by Zac Efron (Kevin), Harris Dickinson (David), Jeremy Allen White (Kerry), and Stanley Simons (Mike).

One key storytelling component in The Iron Claw is the music that soundtracks the film's most intense, exciting, and tragic moments. Along with composing the film's rock-infused score, Arcade Fire instrumentalist and composer Richard Reed Parry wrote and recorded an original song called "Live That Way Forever" for The Iron Claw with his wife Laurel Sprengelmeyer, known by her stage name Little Scream. Along with the various renditions of this original song, which is performed by Simons as Mike in the film, The Iron Claw is also punctuated by a brilliant selection of pre-existing, mostly '70s tunes.

The Iron Claw tells the true story of the Von Erichs, a legendary wrestling family, but the film changed and left out some details about their lives.

When Every Song Plays In The Iron Claw

A few songs serve as the von erich brothers' entrance music.

"Don't Do Me Like That" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: This song plays on the radio as Kevin, David, and Mike drive to the lake in their truck while eating burgers. The song continues playing non-diegetically over a scene of the boys floating on the lake in inner tubes while drinking beers, as locals swim, lounge on the dock, and jump into the lake in the background.

"(Don’t Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult: The first few notes of "(Don’t Fear) The Reaper" play as David starts laughing to himself about Kevin's failed attempts at intimidation on the air before the scene transitions to cars pulling up to the Sportatorium. People are shown arriving in droves to see Kevin and a "mystery guest" (David in his pro-wrestling debut) fight Bruiser Brody and Gino Hernandez. The song proceeds to play diegetically inside the arena as Kevin and David coordinate their routine backstage with their opponents.

"Gamblin Man" by Eddie Money: This song plays while the Von Erich boys play football in their backyard with their father, Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany) upon Kerry's return from training for the now-boycotted Olympics.

"Live That Way Forever" by Stanley Simons and LVVRS: Mike and his band (played by the real-life band LVVRS from Louisiana) play this song at the house party that he snuck out to with his brothers and Kevin's girlfriend Pam (Lily James). Earlier in The Iron Claw , Mike is briefly shown rehearsing "Live That Way Forever" with his band in one of their garages as Kerry and David pull up in their truck. Mike also plays this song on the guitar and sings it softly to himself before he takes his own life later in the movie.

"Tom Sawyer" by Rush: As soon as Mike drops the needle on his vinyl record, this song starts blasting from Mike's speakers, which Kerry can hear in the distance while working out in the garage. "Tom Sawyer" then turns into Kevin, Kerry, and David's entrance music as they begin wrestling as a trio, playing over a montage of the Von Erich brothers working out and wrestling together in the ring, both locally and on the road. Clips are interspersed of David and Kerry partying and doing drugs, Fritz counting cash, Kevin and Pam moving into their new apartment, and Kerry riding his motorcycle.

"Beggin'" by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons: This song plays as Kevin and Pam exit the church right after getting married on their wedding day. They proceed to walk down the church steps as the guests throw confetti at them in celebration. The song continues playing at the reception as the newlyweds and their guests dance to it on the dancefloor.

"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" by John Denver: After David and Kevin's heart-to-heart in the bathroom stall at Kevin's wedding reception, the scene cuts back to the dancefloor where the DJ starts playing this song. In true Texas fashion, Pam and the Von Erich brothers gather at the front of the room and line dance to "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" together .

"Texas (When I Die)" by Tanya Tucker: Following David Von Erich's death in The Iron Claw , this song is used as Kerry's entrance music when he takes his late brother's place in the ring against Ric Flair at the Texas Stadium to compete for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship belt. In real life, Tanya Tucker's cover of "Texas (When I Die)" actually served as the real David Von Erich's entrance music .

"Live That Way Forever" by Richard Reed Perry, Little Scream, and The Barr Brothers: The studio recording of "Live That Way Forever" plays while Kevin and his sons play football at the end of The Iron Claw as the credits begin to roll. This version is performed by Perry and Little Scream, backed by Montreal band The Barr Brothers.

The Iron Claw depicts many real events in its portrayal of the Von Erich family, but not every detail could be included in the final product.

‘Furiosa’ First Reactions Praise ‘Fury Road’ Prequel as ‘Really F—ing Good’ and ‘Powerhouse Action Filmmaking at Its Absolute Best’

Furiosa

The first reactions for George Miller’s “ Furiosa ” have trickled in on social media ahead of the movie’s world premiere later this month at the Cannes Film Festival, and it appears the “Mad Max: Fury Road” director has another amazing action epic on his hands.

“Brings me great joy to report that ‘Furiosa’ is really, really fucking good,” IndieWire film critic David Ehrlich wrote on X. “Operates in an extremely different gear than ‘Fury Road’ (in ways that i suspect will frustrate some people), but also manages to make that movie even richer while carving its own legend in the wasteland.”

Popular on Variety

Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the title role from Charlize Theron in this prequel, which follows Furiosa as she’s kidnapped from her home as a young child by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Horde and seeks vengeance and a reunion with her family and her homeland.

Journalist Simon Thompson added in his reaction: “Jesus George Miller! ‘Furiosa’ engulfs you. At times it almost seems to exceed the canvas of the IMAX format it is THAT big – and yet at times has a deeply affecting intimacy. Echoing cinematic elements from the 50s through the 80s, it’s a rich, smart vision the cast revels in.”

Speaking to  Total Film magazine last month, Miller’s longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell let it slip that “Furiosa” contains “one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot” and required 200 stunt people on set daily.

“Furiosa” will open in theaters May 24 from Warner Bros. after its Cannes world premiere.

George Miller’s #Furiosa is powerhouse action filmmaking at its absolute best! A ferocious & relentlessly paced epic that expands the story of Furiosa and the Wasteland while delivering the craziest chases, the most bombastic characters & just plain stunning cinematography.… pic.twitter.com/tLEADO3Zc2 — Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) May 7, 2024

Heavy metal cinema. Has all the fire & brimstone of Fury Road but still delivers something entirely unique. George Miller is a movie making God. Anya Taylor-Joy is a MOVIE star. Chris Hemsworth’s delivers the best role of his career. Furiosa is why we go to the movies. https://t.co/EPW9H8LxV9 — Joe (@Cinema_Joe23) May 7, 2024
I would and could easily watch 15 hours of Anya Taylor Joy and Alyla Browne as #Furiosa , however much of her film struggles with inconsistent pacing due to the segmented story. This won't match up to Fury Road's splendor but it also doesn't need to. #IMAX pic.twitter.com/q1vyUpYJeK — therese lacson • 宋蕾蕾 (@bamfpire) May 7, 2024
FURIOSA is a visceral triumph. An epic trip through Miller's scorched wasteland that spans decades. The emotional journey is intimately personal and deeply moving. Action is ferocious, wild and unrelenting. Hold tight and brace for fury. pic.twitter.com/r8OOSCsrNt — Heroes Unbound (@HeroesUnbound) May 7, 2024
Even though I understand what it takes to make a film, I still don’t understand how Dr. George Miller does it. I was lucky enough to see ‘Furiosa’ a month ago, and I’m still reeling at how films like his exist. It’s so intricate, detailed, and immersive. Madonna’s hits-filled celebration tour, dissected.

Hear five standouts from the set, and six we wish she’d played.

A magenta dotted line.

By Caryn Ganz

Dear listeners,

Lindsay is desperately seeking some time off this week, so I am the first of your guest playlisters: Caryn, the pop music editor. I’m going to tell you a secret — you could consider it one of my confessions on a dance floor. I saw Madonna’s Celebration Tour seven times; eight if you include the livestream from Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night, where the Queen of Pop wrapped her first-ever retrospective with a free show before an estimated 1.6 million people on Copacabana Beach.

Some have asked why, so a brief explanation: I believe Madonna is the most important and influential solo figure in pop history, and I don’t skip opportunities to see her onstage, where she has innovated and thrilled throughout her four-decade career. (If you’re wondering who was behind “ 60 Times Madonna Changed Our Culture ,” wonder no more.) I was too young to catch the Virgin or Who’s That Girl tours — and nobody took me to Blond Ambition or the Girlie Show (ahem, parents) — so my live history begins with Drowned World in 2001 and I have done my best to catch up.

The Confessions Tour from 2006 is the best I’ve seen in person, the Tears of a Clown revival at Art Basel in 2016 was the zaniest, and Celebration is the first one I’ve reviewed (on its U.S. leg’s opening night in October). Repeated viewings haven’t changed my initial critical overview, though some parts of the show grew on me, some vocal performances sharpened up, and some of the extemporaneous speeches Madonna gave during the two breaks each night designed for them were stunningly raw and moving. (See Bonus Tracks below for more on that.)

But the point of today’s playlist is to take a deeper (and deeper) look at the songs Madonna did — and didn’t — select for the tour. The first five tracks are my favorites from the show, which has a lot to do with how she staged them. The second six are songs that were sorely missed, so should you ever do a Celebration 2, M, please consider them official requests.

Crazy for you,

Listen along while you read.

1. “like a prayer”.

The Celebration Tour stage encompassed 4,400 square feet, including a spinning circular platform that was the focal point for several songs — including this standout, performed on a carousel that rose into the air as shirtless dancers in loincloths and masks draped themselves in crucifixion-like poses. The entire show was set to backing tracks rather than a live band, and for this 1989 hit, it was a remix featuring booming bass and a few seconds of Sam Smith and Kim Petras’s “Unholy” at the beginning and end. (The precise mix isn’t available, but the “7” Remix” edit gets you close.) Chills, I tell you! ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

2. “Live to Tell”

Much has been written about the stunning performance of this 1986 song, which Madonna staged as a tribute to victims of AIDS. She floated above the crowd in a rectangular box gazing at black-and-white portraits of those lost to the disease (including many of her friends and collaborators) on massive screens around her, which multiplied to demonstrate the scale of the epidemic. Each night I saw the show, she had a genuine emotional response and delivered her strongest vocals here.

3. “Nothing Really Matters”

Madonna started the show with this song from “Ray of Light” (1998), using it as a table setter before she went back in time and revisited the story of her career. It was a striking entrance: She held a few poses on the spinning platform at the base of the stage, and slowly rotated out toward the audience in a black kimono and halo headpiece. As a song choice, it was a pointed opening statement about maturing, life choices, different kinds of love, and beginnings and endings.

4. “Don’t Tell Me”

The videos for “Don’t Tell Me” and “Hung Up” feature my favorite Madonna choreography, and while I was extremely happy to get them both live on this tour, they were both abbreviated! (So were a lot of other songs, but these felt especially egregious.) Still: I love this one’s stubborn message, and it was a blast to see the group number recreated on the Celebration stage — and a reminder that Madonna, always ahead of the curve, went cowboy chic back in 2000.

5. “Open Your Heart”

The section of the show dedicated to Madonna’s early days in New York and her first hits underscored the grit it took to get noticed and the glee she took in escaping on the dance floor. “Everybody” and “Holiday” were delightful, but her live performance of “Open Your Heart” made me discover the song anew: beautifully constructed, simple and still dramatic in the best ways, a real piece of pop perfection.

OK, now for the requests: This 2000 song joined the set list for the finale in Rio, but it should have been there the whole time! It’s a statement of purpose that encapsulates Madonna’s entire career. It is electrifying heard over the speakers of an arena — we know this, because it was the centerpiece of her Confessions Tour, when she performed it as an ecstatic roller disco in a crisp white suit.

7. “Secret”

Personally, I would have traded “Human Nature” for this “Bedtime Stories” single, which has one of the more unusual chord progressions in the Madonna catalog — a satisfying blend of major and minor that actually sounds mysterious and alluring.

8. “Oh Father”

Motherhood was the defining theme of the Celebration show, a thread that ran from the opener “Nother Really Matters” through the many moments featuring Madonna’s children (four of them went on the road and appeared each night). She performed “Mother and Father,” a song about loss from her 2003 album “American Life,” with her son David, and it did grow on me as a result. (I would have preferred “Hollywood,” but that’s a whole other mood.) Still, I missed “Oh Father,” the dramatic ballad from “Like a Prayer” that was a highlight of Blond Ambition.

9. “Material Girl”

We had a lot of early hits in the show, so I get why it didn’t make the cut, but I will say this: Someone was playing this 1985 smash on a sound system outside of Barclays Center after the second show I saw in Brooklyn, and watching the crowd dance and shout along, I realized I missed this moment during the concert. Still a certified banger!

10. “Beautiful Stranger”

Some of Madonna’s best songs have arrived on soundtracks (that’s where we got “Vogue”!) and I have an enduring love of this kicky little tune from the 1999 album that accompanied “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”

11. “Frozen”

Madonna performed “Frozen” a handful of times on Celebration, subbing it in for “Rain,” but I got “Rain” all seven times and was thirsty for this “Ray of Light” track instead. It’s a masterpiece of downtempo electro with a beautiful vocal and ear-tickling synth flourishes. It brings the drama we crave! Next time, Madonna, please?

Bonus Tracks

As I mentioned above, Madonna addressed the audience for two extended periods during each show. On Jan. 23 at Madison Square Garden, she spoke about AIDS in New York in the 1980s, singling out Ellen Matzer and Valery Hughes in the audience — two nurses, “heroes,” she said, on the front lines of the epidemic, working in wards where “there were no visitors.” She went on, describing her own stop in a hospital room where she encountered a young man on the brink of death. “I laid down on the bed next to him, and he held my hand and he said, ‘Mother, thank you for coming,’” she said, her voice starting to break. “And it just made me think, these women here tonight, they did this every [expletive] day. And they got no thanks. So please say thank you to them right now.” It was a moment of gratitude that had most of the arena in tears.

Also, Madonna used “I Don’t Search I Find” as the soundtrack to a spectacular video montage near the end of the show that captured what made her inescapable — and irresistible to the media — throughout her career. It’s the best song from her most recent studio album, “Madame X,” and I recommend it.
