First of all, the team of Heather Horton and Michael McDermott is a dream to see together when Heather opens for Michael! To hear Heather’s music, which stands formidably by itself and has international acclaim, is to witness a one person symphony. Sweet, sophisticated and, at times, brutally honest I watch with the fact she is true popular music royalty.

Michael McDermott intertwines personal trials and tribulations with wit, heartache, humor and masterful lyrics. The likes of Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and James Taylor are the company and neighbohood in which he weaves his tapestry. All I can say is it my pleasure and distinct privilege to witness his masterful performances and that those who for one reason or another miss his shows are depriving themselves of someone special. I know, I have seen him sing and play some of the most poignant music of my lifetime; treat yourself to the remarkable Michael McDermott next time he is near your town!

Absolutely fantastic show. He is hilarious and amazingly talented. Song style reminds me of MN favorites Martin Zellar and gb Leighton, with the passion of Springstein. Thoroughly entertained by both Michael and Heather Horton. Blended their talents and singing fantastically. He provided an amazing personal account with stories and banter that kept us engaged. Anytime we leave wanting more, we love it! I coulda listened to the two of them for 3 hrs easy! Amazingly we would have never known he was singing while sick! HOPE he comes around our neck of the woods again!

Folk-Rock Singer-Songwriter Michael Mcdermott Takes Us To St. Paul’s Boulevard On His Powerful New Studio Album

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (April 5, 2022) – Music makes a deep connection when it strikes that delicate nerve separating the personal from the universal. If the listener can use the songs as mirrors, then the musician has succeeded in communicating their art. Chicago-based singer-songwriter Michael McDermott has spent decades riding that artistic balance, and he does it again with fresh potency on St. Paul’s Boulevard , which arrives May 20 on Pauper Sky Records.

St. Paul’s Boulevard is a concept album, of sorts. It gathers its creative momentum by introducing characters lost and found, rich and poor, young and old, and many struggling to survive on a fictional street that could exist anywhere. Recorded from August 2021 to February 2022 at Transient Sound and Pauper Sky Studios in Chicago, St. Paul’s Boulevard is the sonic vision of McDermott and co-producer Steven Gillis. Gillis is also on drums, playing with fellow musicians Matt Thompson on acoustic and electric bass; Grant Tye on guitars; Heather Lynne Horton on violin and vocals; and Vijay Tellis-Nayak on piano and organ. Additional musicians on S t. Paul’s Boulevard include Will Kimbrough on guitars, banjo, and mandolin; John Deaderick on piano, organ, and keyboards; Danny Mitchell on piano and keyboards; and David Grissom on guitars.

McDermott, who also played guitars and piano on his batch of personal songs, is at his most passionate on choice cuts: “Our Little Secret” is a driving folk-rocker that plays like the soundtrack for restless days and lust-filled nights. “Sick of This Town,” with its chugging folk-country bottom beat, is a cathartic ode to busting out of the neighborhood that cages us in. “Marlowe” pays tribute to Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe character in an anthemic heartland rocker. And “New Year’s Day” is one of those brooding tunes that seeps under the skin and rattles the senses.

“Everyone has their own St. Paul's Boulevard, the place where we left pieces of our hearts, our innocence, where we suffered heartbreak, came to learn about shame, where we struggled to find our place in this world,” says McDermott. “It’s a place where we struggled to nurture love and light in a darkened world. It’s where some of us were permanently arrested in our development and our social and emotional intelligence.”

McDermott knows a thing or two about heartbreak and arrested development. Back in the early ‘90s, McDermott was the new toast of the major label recording industry with his debut album, 620 W. Surf . But in typical chew-them-up and spit-them-out style, McDermott had seemingly been tossed in the never-been bin by the end of that decade. He persevered, though, and built a career fortified by more than a dozen studio albums and critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, The New York Times , CNN, and The Washington Post , to name a few. Even Stephen King, the master of the best-selling horror novel genre, called McDermott “possibly the greatest undiscovered rock and roll talent of the last 20 years.”

But this heartland rocker continues to make music on his own terms. He is the ultimate survivor of the potentially soul- crushing world of money-hungry executives and starving singer-songwriters yearning for stardom. That’s exactly why St. Paul’s Boulevard is as personal as it is universal. McDermott lived those songs, that place, and those shattered hopes.

“Those days are now just a wash of dreams of characters, of drunken and drug-fueled nights wandering all over town looking for an angry fix driven by love, lust, longing, or connection,” he says. “I lost a lot of people on St. Paul's Boulevard. Many never made it out, but I'm lucky to have. It's a place that brings out our best and our worst in equal measure. It's the landscape where the doggedness of the spirit rises above the grim realities that surround us.”

Video Premiere: Michael McDermott “Pack the Car”

Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Michael McDermott’s song “Pack the Car,” from his forthcoming album St. Paul’s Boulevard , due to be released on May 20.  The album was produced by Michael McDermott and Steven Gillis.

“Pack the Car” is Michael McDermott on vocals and acoustic guitar; Will Kimbrough on electric guitars; John Deaderick on piano, organ, and baritone solo; Matt Thompson on bass; and Steven Gillis on drums.

The video was produced by Michael McDermott.  This is a lyric video for the song, but it’s also full of vintage footage that looks like it could be old movies from mid-20th century roadtrip vacations.  From its very title, “Pack the Car” taps a universal impulse to break free, and with “Come on, come on, come on, come on, let’s pack the car and go” the song really nails the sentiment. Better still, the music is heartland rock — the best music for feeling free to.  Listen closer, though, because this is a song about right here and right now, a song of breaking free from social division, and a call to break free, yes, but at the same time, a call to “go home” together.

A first-year Butler Studio artist from Huntington Beach, California, tenor Michael McDermott is the third-place winner in HGO’s 2023 Eleanor McCollum Competition Concert of Arias and a 2021 alumnus of HGO’s Young Artists Vocal Academy. During HGO’s 2023-24 season, he performs the roles of Bardolph in  Falstaff  and 4th Esquire in  Parsifal  and covers the role of Don Ottavio in  Don Giovanni. In 2022 he covered the role of Don Ottavio in  Don Giovanni at the Aspen Music Festival, returning in 2023 to perform Arbace in Idomeneo.  At The Juilliard School in New York, he performed the roles of Spärlich in  Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor  and Filippo in Hadyn’s  L’infedelta Delusa , as well as appearing in liederabends and recitals coached by Brian Zeger and Pierre Vallet. His recent competition wins include first prize in the 2021 Schmidt Vocal Competition and first prize in the Scholarship Division of the National Opera Association’s Carolyn Bailey Argento Competition. McDermott received his Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, and pursued his master's degree at Rice University studying with Robin Rice.

“I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f–k yourself,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised.”

The “Finding Dory” voice actor reminded viewers that she also got the boot from TV when she came out as gay, thus ending her eponymous sitcom “Ellen” in the late ’90s.

“Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay,” she quipped.

DeGeneres experienced her second fall from grace in 2020 when she was accused of leading a toxic workplace , which resulted in the firing of three of her top producers .

Employees came forward and accused DeGeneres of leading the set with intimidation, racism and fear. A producer on an Australian morning show who had been on the set even claimed the comedian demanded no one make eye contact with her.

“I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said during her performance.

“It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

Warner Bros. canceled the celebrity-filled talk show in 2022 following the controversy.

“This was a whole different thing,” she replied to a fan at the end of the set when she launched into an informal conversation with attendees. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective.

“I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal,” she continued. “I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”

Jokes aside, the “Saving the Gorillas” narrator admitted the scandal was “devastating.”

“I just hated the way the show ended,” she shared. “I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way.”

DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, admitted during the event that they both lay low in the aftermath because it was hard on both of them, but now they’re ready to get back to living.

“It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” DeGeneres told an audience member. “But I am dancing now.”

“Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour” will head to San Diego, Calif., then Washington State, Oregon and the Bay Area. She told the crowd that her tour will culminate with a new Netflix special that will tape in the fall.
