New Philharmonic’s newest John Williams concert features many of his most memorable movie themes from such films as Star Wars  –  A New Hope  and  The Empire Strikes Back ,  Raiders of the Lost Ark ,  Superman, Schindler’s List  and more.  

Join COD Music professor Steve Pierson for a pre-concert lecture one hour prior to each concert. Mr. Pierson will lead a discussion providing insight on selections featured in the concert.

An astonishing number of the world’s favourite blockbuster films are scored by one man: John Williams. From Star Wars to Harry Potter , E.T. to Jaws , Williams’ iconic scores have helped shape the last 40 years of cinema, inspiring and entertaining millions if not billions of people around the world.

John Williams is the most Oscar-nominated man alive for a reason: he deserves celebrating. And that’s exactly what Manchester Concert Orchestra will be doing on 26 November, when his best loved music will be brought to vivid life at the Manchester Opera House .

Under the baton of celebrated conductor Lee Reynolds, the orchestra will take us on a journey through the composer’s glittering back catalogue, steering us towards Rolling Stone ’ s view that “John Williams doesn’t need the films, the films need him”.

Expect to hear music from all of the big hitters already mentioned, alongside a generous selection of excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park , Superman , The Terminal and many more.

As for the performers, the Manchester Concert Orchestra was formed in 1997 by Raymond Gubbay to perform in concerts of popular classical music in the North West. It’s since emerged as a major force in the region and beyond, having performed with concert tours of The Best of the Last Night of the Proms, Tchaikovsky galas as well as many much-loved evenings of film music like this one.

Promising an irresistible evening of entertainment, this is a concert that anyone and everyone will enjoy.

John Williams and the Boston Pops

In January 1980, John Williams was named the 19th conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. At the time of his appointment, the world-renowned film composer was not especially known as a conductor, but he brought to the podium the background, talent, and celebrity to succeed at the daunting assignment. He broadened and updated the Boston Pops’ repertoire, wrote and commissioned new works and arrangements, maintained the popularity of the PBS series Evening at Pops , made numerous best-selling recordings, and toured extensively with the orchestra. Since stepping down as Pops conductor in 1993, Williams has maintained an active relationship with the organization as Boston Pops Conductor Laureate and Artist in Residence at Tanglewood.

John Williams was born in Flushing, New York in 1932 to Esther and John Williams, Sr., (a jazz drummer who played with the Raymond Scott Quintet). In 1948 he moved with his family to Los Angeles, where he studied piano and composition at UCLA and privately with composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. During his three years in the Air Force, Williams arranged music for and conducted service bands. In 1954, Williams returned to New York to attend the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Madame Rosina Lhevinne.

The Boston Globe announced John Williams' appointment as Conductor of the Boston Pops in January 1980. He was in the midst of writing the score to The Empire Strikes Back, but considered the appointment one of his greatest honors.

Known world-wide for his film scores, John Williams is also a prolific composer for the concert stage. His decades-long relationship with the Boston Pops (first as conductor and then as conductor laureate) has proved fruitful in generating new works, and both the BSO and Pops have premiered several of Williams' compositions.

John Towner Williams is the undisputed giant of film music. For several years he has worked with the likes of legendary directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. He composed scores for Star Wars, Harry Potter, Schindler’s List, Jaws, Indiana Jones and many, many more. He was awarded with 5 Oscars, 4 Golden Globes, 24 Grammys and was nominated internationally more than 100 times.

Founded by Matthias G. Kendlinger in 2002 and performing around 100 concerts every year, the K&K Philharmonic Orchestra has played in concert halls such as the KKL Luzern, the Musikverein in Vienna and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg,   as well as in Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm.

From the deserts of Tatooine to the Hogwarts Express, one thing’s for sure: the minute you hear the music, you know you’re in John Williams’ country. Join Hollywood maestro Richard Kaufman and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for a blockbuster tribute to the world’s greatest living film composer.

Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams

It’s back! The beloved film score program  Star Wars and More with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra  returns to  Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta on Sunday, May 19, 2024 ! This family-friendly symphonic concert will feature pieces from iconic film scores including many of John Williams' works including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and much more.

Just as in years past, there will be costumed characters and cosplayers out and about before the concert kicks off. Make sure to arrive early for family-friendly activities including photo opportunities and face painting! We encourage fans to dress in themed attire and cosplay to add to the fun.

*Please note, there is no film screening during this performance. Additionally, John Williams will not be a part of this event.

*Lightsabers, blasters, staffs, brooms and other prop weapons are NOT permitted at the venue.
